Love is love, and grief is grief.

Wherever you are in your grief journey is where you are supposed to be.

For those who love a pet, the loss of that love will be rocked with grief. It’s not “just an animal.” • You have the right to grieve the death of your pet just as you would anyone else. • You have the right to talk about your grief without feeling guilty or foolish. • You have the right to feel a variety of emotions and you are not wrong for feeling them.

------------------

3 TIPS for Grieving Pet Parents

There will be good days, and there will be bad days. Just because there might be days where the tears are front and center does not mean someone’s crazy. It’s just one of those grief-spurt days.

-----------------3 Do what you can to honor the life you shared. Throughout the life of your pet, there were routines and rituals. When a beloved pet dies, much like a loved human being, we share in rituals. We honor the life. Do the same for a loved pet. • Write a love letter to your pet. C • Create a special ornament in honor of your pet. • Light a candle and set it near a framed favorite photo of you and your pet. Place it in a special area of your home where you liked to relax together. Email us at WeCare@ThePetLossCenter.com for more mo tips on coping with pet loss as a grieving pet parent, child, or surviving pet friend.

S I sit here with my little boy cat, Joey taking care of this last task for this issue, I’m reminded of why we started this book in the first place. Joey and his sister Zoey were abandoned after a family had moved out of their home. They simply let the cats out, got in their moving truck and drove away. I had just lost a fur baby a few months earlier and while not really ready to commit to another cat...My partner, Alicia and I committed to two. That was 12 years ago and Joey and Zoey are both doing well having found their furever home with us.

Shelly Allen

Jackie Branca

Stories like ours are at the heart of Pet Junction. Unfortunately, most pets are not as lucky as Joey and Zoey. Many times, pets are dumped and end up traveling a pretty sorry road. When Jackie and I started Pet Junction, our intent was to offer our readers information that would enable them to jump the hurdles, get through the hard times and keep their pets. We figured if we gave pet owners a resource to find groomers, trainers, education, ect, then the excuses for dumping them would be much harder to come by. This little book, along with our website and our phone app was developed for one reason, to keep people and their pets together. Our website is always updated with new, helpful articles and our phone app features real time rescue listings and so much more. We hope you’ll take the time to check out everything PJ has to offer because everything we do, is for you. Thank you for reading and we’ll see you next time! Same time, same sandbox...

FIVE TIPS FOR SOLVING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS

By Barbara Heidenreich, www.goodbirdinc.com

Where Pets and People Intersect

P

arrots can provide us with great joy in our lives. However, at times their behavior seems completely inappropriate for the home. Sometimes these unwanted behaviors can lead to desperate efforts to find a new home for a beloved parrot. While some unwanted behavior may be too difficult to modify without help, many behaviors can be addressed by applying the following simple principles. 1. Learn how to read and interpret your bird’s body language: This is how your bird communicates to you. Notice how your bird holds his feathers, how his eyes appear, what he is doing with his mouth, etc. during different times of the day. Decide by what you see if your bird is comfortable, relaxed, showing a fear response, or aggressive behavior, etc. Try to remember what body postures go with what “state of mind”. Use this information when you interact with your bird. Try to avoid doing things that cause your bird to display behavior that indicates he is scared, nervous or aggressive. Focus on interactions that seem to promote a relaxed and comfy bird. For example,

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 21

if you try to pick up your bird and his body language shows that he might bite, respect what he just told you with his body language and try again later. You can also try to persuade your bird to look forward to stepping up by using a treat or reward. 2. Find a treat that works: Having a food treat that your bird really likes to use to reward good behavior is an excellent tool for modifying behavior. The treat is your way of communicating to your bird that what he just did was “good”. An easy way to identify a good treat for your bird is to feed your bird his normal diet in the morning. Notice what food item your bird eats first. That is probably his favorite food. Take that item out of the regular morning feeding and use it to reward your bird for good behavior throughout the day. Many parrots also enjoy sunflower seeds, peanuts, nuts, grapes, etc. Make sure to break big items into smaller pieces for more opportunities to reward your bird and to help avoid feeding your bird too many treats. 3. Don’t make your bird do anything he doesn’t want to do:

22 • PET JUNCTION

This may seem like common sense, but it is often easily overlooked. Reading your bird’s body language is very important when trying to do this. Recognize when your bird is telling you “no” with his body language. Instead of continuing to force the issue, try to find a way to get your bird to do what you want using positive methods, like using treats and rewards for steps in the right direction. This will help build a positive and trusting relationship between you and your bird. 4. Ignore undesired behavior, reward desired behavior: It is easy to react to undesired behavior when we see it. However, this isn’t always an effective way to modify that behavior.

www.PetJunction.us

5. Teach your bird to do what you want by rewarding little steps of progress towards the desired behavior: It may take longer to teach your bird to do something using positive methods, but in the long run both you and your bird will be happier. Instead of forcing your bird to do whatever you would like him to do, break the behavior down into little steps in your mind. After your bird performs each step, give him a treat. Eventually you can get to the desired behavior and the entire process will have been positive and fun for your bird.

For example, if your parrot screams for attention, walking over to his cage to yell at him can actually be the attention your bird was looking for. This can teach your bird to scream to get you to come over to his cage.

For example you can teach your bird to step up by rewarding him for taking a step towards your hand, for lifting a foot, for putting a foot on your hand, for putting both feet on your hand, for allowing you to move your hand and so on. By doing this, you can create a bird that looks forward to doing what you ask him to do.

If instead you wait until the bird stops screaming, or does something else, and then go over to your bird, you will teach him “quiet” or other behaviors will get the desired attention.

Applying these basic principles can help shape your birds behavior. This can lead to a long, happy and harmonious relationship with your bird. Give it a try!

BOREDOM BUSTERS FOR CATS

W

hen the weather is beautiful, many of us spend more time outdoors enjoying the sunshine. As a result, your cat is left at home alone more often than in other times. Cats make great companions and because of their independent nature, they are content being home alone. But just like other animals, cats can get bored if they are not given sufficient stimulation. A bored cat can turn into a destructive cat, which can result in anxious behavior and may even cause a cat to attack its owner! Keep your cat occupied and under control with these great boredom busters: THE HEIGHT ADVANTAGE

Provide shelves at various heights around your home to give your cat a variety of different views. Places for them to sit by the window give cats a chance to enjoy the outside world. Cats feel safe (and superior) on elevated perches as it allows them to survey their surrounding areas. THE JOY OF TOYS While there are great toys available, there are many that you can make yourself using things like tinfoil, empty toilet roll holders or ping-pong balls. Try tying toys to the waistband of your clothes and walk around for your cat to chase. And make sure you rotate toys to keep your cat interested.

Where Pets and People Intersect

HIDE AND SEEK Cats love boxes. So next time you bring a new purchase home, don’t recycle the box straight away. Cut holes in the box, turn it upside down and give your cat a retreat. Alternatively you could make it into a cat tunnel for them to hide in and jump out when you least expect it! STARTING FROM SCRATCH Provide scratching posts for your cat. You can find these at your local pet store, or you can use a tree trunk. These should be placed in prominent positions and at different angles. HUNTING SKILLS SATISFIED Provide your feline friend with an array of delicious snacks or treats. Try hiding them around your home or in their dry food for the cat to “hunt”. You can also hide their favorite toys or hide from your cat and get them to hunt you. TRAIN YOUR CAT Training your cat can be difficult, but it’s not impossible. Use tasty treats to reward your cat for good behavior like using the litter tray, coming for food or lifting a paw. Did you know you can even teach a cat tricks? Watch our video on how to do this. CATNIP ECSTASY Many cats like catnip or other catfriendly plants, so if you have a garden you might want to think about growing

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 25

some for your cat to nibble on. If you live in an apartment, look for catnip toys and watch your cat roll around as they become intoxicated by the scent. DOUBLE TROUBLE A great way to keep your cat entertained at all times is to get another one. Cats are social animals and their behavior can benefit greatly when introducing another cat gradually and carefully. ESSENTIALS Make sure your cat is covered with the essentials like clean litter trays. It’s important to equip your home with one litter tray per cat. CUDDLES Cats need interaction with their owners, which is why plenty of playtime and lots of cuddles are the essential ingredients for a happy cat. About Dr Joanne Righetti: Dr Joanne Righetti is

TEN SCIENTIFIC BENEFITS OF BEING A CAT OWNER

By Kathy Benjamin & Austin Thompson

Mental Floss

Studies have shown that just watching cat videos on the internet can boost a person’s energy and create positive emotions—so it’s no surprise that actual cat ownership has a number of benefits. Here are a few.

Where Pets and People Intersect

1. OWNING A CAT IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. If you’re worried about your carbon footprint, it’s better to own a cat than a dog. A 2009 study found that the resources needed to feed a dog over the course of its life create the same eco-footprint as that of a Land Cruiser. Meanwhile, cats—which eat less in general and are more likely to eat fish than corn- or beef-flavored products— only have the approximate carbon footprint of a small hatchback.

2. THEY’LL HELP YOU COPE ... Losing a loved one is incredibly painful, but one of the best ways of coping is to own a pet. Cats have been shown to help people get over their loss more quickly, and show less physical symptoms of pain, like crying. Despite the fact that they are only animals, cats serve as a social support during difficult times. People in mourning report talking to their pet to work out their feelings, since it is often easier to talk to something that won’t respond and can’t judge than to another human being.

3. ... AND FIND A SIGNIFICANT OTHER. If you’re a single guy and you can’t seem to get a date, get a cat! A British poll found that 82 percent of women agreed they are more attracted to men

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 29

who like animals. And while having a dog will do wonders for your dating life, a whopping 90 percent of single women said that men who own a cat are “nicer” than other guys. Listing that you own a cat on your dating profile could do wonders for the number of responses you get—but remember, a cat is for life, not just until you find a partner.

4. CAT OWNERS ARE SMART. A 2010 survey of British pet owners by the University of Bristol found that people who owned cats were more likely to have college degrees than their dog loving counterparts. In 2014, a researcher in Wisconsin surveyed 600 college students and found that cat owners were actually more intelligent as well. (But it’s probably not the cat itself making the owner smarter: The researchers conducting the Bristol survey said that smarter people tend to work longer hours, and since cats require less attention than dogs, they are a better choice for the busy intellectual.)

5. YOU’LL HAVE A HEALTHIER HEART. Owning any pet is good for your heart. Cats in particular lower your stress level—possibly since they don’t require as much effort as dogs—and lower the amount of anxiety in your life. Petting a cat has a positive calming effect. One

30 JUNCTION 30 ••PET PET JUNCTION

study found that over a 10-year period cat owners were 30 percent less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners (although this might just be because cat owners are more relaxed and have lower stress in general).

6. THEY FULFILL YOUR NEED FOR COMPANIONSHIP. The stereotype that dogs are more affectionate than cats is just that: a stereotype. In fact, it turns out that cats can be just as good of companions as dogs, especially for women. An Austrian study conducted in 2003 found that having a cat in the house is the emotional equivalent of having a romantic partner. As well as initiating contact much of the time, studies have shown cats will remember kindness shown to them and return the favor later. But cats really do have the upper hand in these relationships. After thousands of years of domestication, cats have learned how to make a half purr/half howl noise that sounds remarkably like a human baby’s cry. And since our brains are programmed to respond to our children’s distress, it is almost impossible to ignore what a cat wants when it demands it like that.

7. THEY CAN TELL YOU (AND OTHERS!) A LOT ABOUT YOUR

www.PetJunction.us www.PetJunction.us

PERSONALITY. Your choice of pet reveals something about your personality. While dog lovers tend to be the life of the party, cat owners are quieter and more introverted. However, they score very highly when it comes to how trustworthy they are and how much they trust other people. Cat owners are also less manipulative and more modest.

8. YOU’LL SLEEP BETTER. Several studies and polls in the UK have found that people (especially women) prefer to sleep with their cats than with their partners, and they even report sleeping better with a cat than with a human. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine indicates that they might be on to something: 41 percent of the people in that study indicated that they slept better because of their pet, while only 20 percent said that it led to disturbances.

9. CAT OWNERSHIP MEANS FEWER ALLERGIES. Sadly, it’s too late for you, but if you have a child on the way, it might be time to get a cat. In 2002, the National Institutes of Health released a study that found children under a year old

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 31

who were exposed to a cat were less likely to develop allergies—and not just pet allergies. According to Marshall Plaut, M.D., chief of the allergic mechanisms section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, “high pet exposure early in life appears to protect against not only pet allergy but also other types of common

allergies, such as allergy to dust mites, ragweed, and grass.” And while the cat parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a threat to young children, experts say that by changing your cat’s litter box every day and keeping the animal indoors, you should be safe and allergy free!

10. THEY CAN QUITE LITERALLY SAVE YOUR LIFE. Cats have a reputation of being aloof and not caring about their humans, but they have saved countless lives over the

years. One cat in the United Kingdom warns her human when he’s about to have an epileptic seizure, while a cat in Montana woke up its two humans when a gas pipe started leaking. Firefighters told the couple that the house could easily have exploded if not for cat’s intervention. One cat has even received the highest medal available to military animals. Simon the cat was onboard the HMS Amethyst, which was sailing up the Yangtze in 1949 when a shell hit the ship, killing several marines and severely injuring Simon. (The event marked the beginning of the 101-day siege of the ship, which would become known as the Yangtze Incident.) Simon was fixed up, and despite being injured, performed his ship duty and started catching the rats that were threatening the ship’s food supply, as well as providing moral support for the surviving sailors. Simon died not long after the ship returned to the UK, but he was posthumously awarded the UK’s Dickin Medal, recognized as the animal Victoria Cross, for “behavior [of] the highest order, although the blast was capable of making a hole over a foot in diameter in a steel plate.”

U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RELEASES ANNUAL DOG ATTACK CITY RANKINGS

Where Pets and People Intersect

SAN DIEGO — The number of postal employees attacked by dogs nationwide reached 6,244 in 2017 — more than 500 fewer than 2016. Today, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is showcasing technology that alerts mail carriers of potential attacks while releasing its annual list of cities where the most dog attacks were recorded. The organization also highlights safety initiatives to help protect its employees and offers tips to pet owners.

“The scanners that our carriers use to confirm a customer’s delivery include a feature for them to indicate the presence of a dog at an individual address,” said DeCarlo. “This information is particularly helpful for substitute carriers who fill in for regular carriers on their days off.” The Postal Service, joined by the American Humane, American Veterinary Medical Association, Insurance Information Institute and State Farm Insurance, is driving home the message that dog bites are a national issue and education can resolve the issue.

“We’re encouraged by the decrease in dog attacks,” said U.S. Postal Service Safety Director Linda DeCarlo in San Diego, where postal employees suffered 46 attacks — the fifth ranked Half of the 4.5 million Americans bitten city in 2017. “The totals by dogs are still too high, but The totals are still too annually are we’re confident that with children, continuing education and high, but with education according to dog bite prevention training, the Centers and dog bite prevention along with advancing for Disease technology, we can keep training...we can Control and more people safe and keep Prevention keep attacks trending attacks trending downward.” (CDC).

downward.

DeCarlo highlights USPS safety measures that alert mail carriers to dogs on their delivery routes. The Package Pickup application on usps. com asks customers to indicate if there are dogs at their addresses when they schedule package pickups. This information is provided to carriers on their delivery scanners which send alerts if an unleashed dog is reported in a delivery area.

Enhancing Employee Safety

DeCarlo gave the following tips and encouraged sharing them using the hashtag #preventdogbites. • If a carrier delivers mail or packages to your front door, place your dog in a separate room and close that door before opening the front door. Some dogs burst through screen doors or plate-glass windows to attack visitors. Dog owners should keep the family pet secured.

40 • PET JUNCTION

• Parents should remind their children and other family members not to take mail directly from carriers in the presence of the family pet, as the dog may view the person handing mail to a family member as a threatening gesture. • The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority. If a carrier feels threatened by a dog, or if a dog is loose or unleashed, the owner may be asked to pick up mail at a Post Office until the carrier is assured the pet has been restrained. If a dog is roaming the neighborhood, the pet owner’s neighbors also may be asked to pick up their mail at the area’s Post Office. American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, estimates that more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year with 800,000 seeking medical attention for these bites — more than half of them being children. “Two-thirds of the injuries occurring in children four years or younger are to the head or neck region, and studies have also shown that the greatest percentage of dog-bite fatalities occurred among children and unsupervised newborns left with dogs — something that should never occur,” said Mark Stubis, chief communications officer, American Humane. “To help, American Humane offers a free online booklet, ‘Pet Meets Baby,’ with valuable information on

introducing a new child to a home with a pet — or a new pet into a home with a child available for families with children.” Insurance company State Farm reports that in 2017, it paid more than $132 million as a result of 3,618 dog-related injury claims. The average cost paid per claim was $36,573. “State Farm is also one of the few insurance companies that does not exclude homeowner or renter insurance coverage because of the breed of dog owned,” said Heather Paul, State Farm public affairs specialist. “The company reinforces that responsible pet ownership and educating children about how to safely interact with dogs is key to reducing dog bites.” “Veterinarians see firsthand the needless heartbreak a dog bite can cause,” said Dr. Mike Topper, AVMA President. “We know that dog bites are not a breed-specific issue and that any dog can bite. We also know that most bites can be prevented through education. Your veterinarian and the AVMA have extensive resources designed to keep your pup, no matter what their breed, a happy, healthy member of your family and community.

2017 Dog Attack Rankings by City A total of 6,244 postal employees were attacked by dogs in 2017. Miami, FL ranked number 16 in the top 30 cities with the most dog bites on postal workers.

PROTECT YOUR DOG FROM DOG PARK BULLIES

By Jane Harrell Pet Finder

D

og parks can be a great place to let your dog socialize and burn off some excess energy. But can you tell when play between dogs has gone from fun roughhousing to bullying? Check out these tips.

Where Pets and People Intersect

HOW TO SPOT A DOG-PARK BULLY Bullying means one dog is playing too rough for another (remember, the bully might be YOUR dog!), and when it happens, it’s time to leave. Here are signs that play has stopped being fun: • One dog repeatedly pins another down, with no reciprocation • One dog repeatedly chases another, with no reciprocation • A dog does not back off when the other dog gives a high-pitched yelp • A dog continues to pursue another who is trying to end the play session by, for example, hiding behind your legs or jumping on a bench • You see anything that makes you uncomfortable (you know your dog best, so trust your instincts!) SIGNS YOUR DOG IS UNCOMFORTABLE Your dog might not come to you when he’s feeling bullied or uncomfortable, so keep an eye out for these body-language cues: • A tail that is low or tucked under • Lip licking • Yawning • Barking while backing away from another dog

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 45

• Avoiding eye contact and turning his head away when another dog approaches WHAT DOES GOOD PLAY LOOK LIKE? While it’s important to remove your dog from a bullying situation, it’s also good to know when play that looks rough to you is really fun for him. Here are signs your dog is having a great time: • A tail wagging in wide sweeps or fast circles • A playful bark that’s slightly higher than his “alert” bark at home • Play bows • Reciprocation: each dog taking turns doing the chasing, pinning, etc. The fact is, any dog of any breed, size, sex, age or temperament can be a bully — or a victim of bullying — and many dogs can go from bully to bullied in different contexts. If your dog doesn’t have a group of pals with whom he can play in a positive way at your local dog park, reach out to local pet parents, or check out Meetup.com, and organize playdates at a safe, fenced-in area. Your dog will thank you with a nice long nap afterwards!

WHY YOU SHOULD TALK TO YOUR DOG By Ana Sandoiu

t is known that talking to one’s baby improves bonding between parent and child. Well, many pet owners view their pets as their own children, but does talking to your dog in the same way as you would a human infant have the same bonding effect? A recent study suggests so.

DOWNLOAD THE MOBILE APP • 53

Slocombe explains the motivation behind the research, saying, “A special speech register, known as infant-directed speech, is thought to aid language acquisition and improve the way a human baby bonds with an adult.” “This form of speech,” she adds, “is known to share some similarities with the way in which humans talk to their pet dogs, known as dogdirected speech.”

If you have a dog, you’re likely in the habit of asking them, “Who’s a good boy?” in a really high-pitched and affectionate tone of voice — sometimes to the amusement of “This high-pitched rhythmic speech those around is common in you. human interactions We wanted to see dogs in whether social bonding with Pet owners do Western cultures, this instinctively between animals and but there isn’t a because they humans was influenced great deal known feel just as about whether it attached to their by the type and content benefits a dog in pets as they may of the communication... the same way that it to their infant. does a baby.” But does this sort of “baby talk” do anything for the dog? “We wanted to look at this question and see whether social bonding Researchers Alex Benjamin and between animals and humans was Katie Slocombe, at the University influenced by the type and content of York in the United Kingdom, set of the communication,” Slocombe out to investigate if so-called dogsays. speak improves bonding between pets and humans, and specifically, Their findings were published in the whether it is useful for the dogs. journal Animal Cognition.

Proof that dogs prefer dog-speak For the study, the researchers designed two experiments in which humans interacted with dogs. In the first, the researchers tested adultdirected speech versus dog-directed speech. By contrast, adult-directed speech contained sentences such as “I went to the cinema last night,” which were spoken in a “normal” tone of voice. The dogs’ attention spans were measured during the two speech types, and after hearing them, the dogs were invited to choose which speaker they wanted to interact with. This first experiment revealed that the dogs strongly preferred humans who had addressed them using dog-directed speech. However, there was the possibility that it was simply the emotional tone that appealed to the dogs and that the content didn’t have anything to do with their preference. ‘Dogs need to hear dog-relevant words’ So, in the second experiment, “the content from experiment one was

reproduced but with reversed prosody such that the dog-related content was spoken with the prosody of [adult-directed speech] and vice versa.” Benjamin — who is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Psychology at the University of York — summarizes the findings. “We found that adult dogs were more likely to want to interact and spend time with the speaker that used dog-directed speech with dogrelated content, than they did those that used adult-directed speech with no dog-related content.” “When we mixed-up the two types of speech and content,” he adds, “the dogs showed no preference for one speaker over the other.” “This suggests that adult dogs need to hear dog-relevant words spoken in a high-pitched emotional voice in order to find it relevant.” Alex Benjamin “We hope this research will be useful for pet owners interacting with their dogs, and also for veterinary professionals and rescue workers,” Benjamin adds.

What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.
