We’ve developed all of these tools for one reason, the health of the animals you keep. We know access to information is hugely important for keeping well kept and happy pets. Happy pets make happy homes, and happy homes keep their pets. How can you help us keep doing what we are doing? Use the advertisers included throughout our platform as they help to pay for all of the things you love most about Pet Junction. A PET PARROT ISN’T FOR EVERYONE

Where Pets and People Intersect

Good Pet Parrots Don’t Just Happen

I

s a pet parrot right for everyone? Absolutely not! In the past years there have been newspaper articles and television programs proclaiming parrots as an easy-care pet. Whoever produced these articles and programs either never owned a parrot, or if they did, did not know how to take care of it. To have a well-behaved parrot that lives a long, healthy life requires a great deal of specialized knowledge. Although this knowledge is available, it may be difficult for the novice to find. I am not saying that parrots can’t make excellent pets because they can! I am saying that good pet parrots don’t just happen, they are created with a combination of good breeding and early socialization, proper feeding, good “parenting”, and the setting of rules with nurturing dominance.

parrots and their care is inaccurate and based on pet industry “mythology”. Although there are quality pet shops that give out excellent information about birds, many still give out inaccurate information based on ignorance or the profit motive. Many of the books on the market today are quite out of date and full of terrible information about feeding, care, taming and training. Fortunately better books are being published but many are quite expensive for the novice bird owner. Bird related publications such as the Companion Parrot Quarlerly (aka -- Pet Bird Report) are a much better source of current knowledge about behavior, nutrition, care, taming and training. Buy From The Right Source

Once the prospective bird owner has chosen the species of parrot they want, they have many choices about where to The Right Information buy their pet. I believe that a domestic hand-fed baby will make a better pet than an imported bird. The new owner Before even considering buying a pet has a much better chance of shaping parrot, a person should thoroughly their parrot’s personality. Diet, Mess and Expense Make sure your baby has been weaned to a nutritious diet. Seed alone is not a proper diet for any bird. It may seem convenient but a predominately seed diet will eventually cause health problems and a shortened life. It should only be a small part of a varied nutritious diet. It can be very difficult to convert any pet bird to a healthy diet if it has been weaned to seed only, instead of a variety containing a formulated diet, high vitamin A vegetables, fruit, seed, nuts and grains. Preparing the proper diet for parrots can be costly and time consuming. Parrots can be incredibly messy pets scattering food everywhere. In the wild, parrots co-evolved with the plants that provide them food - this messiness sows the seeds of future food sources. Although some owners can ‘potty train’ their birds, without that training most birds will go whenever the need occurs. Parrots can be expensive pets, besides the high initial cost of the bird; there are other considerations. A proper cage, quality toys and nutritious foods are essential to the physical and psychological well being of a pet bird. Veterinary costs can be expensive if a bird becomes sick. Any potential owner who is willing to sacrifice time for food preparation, clean up and behavioral interaction, as well as money for their pet’s care is heading in the right direction.

social animals that need to be part of the family. They do not have a magic on/off button that allows owners to pay attention to their owners only when they have the time or are in the mood. Young birds that have been “produced” instead of parented as they are growing may have serious behavioral problems because of the lack of nurturing, handling and other early socialization. Parrots, even domestically raised babies, have no idea how to behave in captivity. For a pet parrot to be a good pet, its owner must teach it how to behave with rules and guidance. Owners must take responsibility for their parrot’s behavior and work to create the kind of bird that they want. People that are serious about having a parrot as a pet need to educate themselves about both the advantages and disadvantages. With a realistic acceptance of the work that is involved and knowledge about care, proper diet and behavior, the new parrot owner can have a wondertul lifelong companion. From my experience with my own parrots and hundreds of pet bird owners, I personally feel that the bond that a human can establish with an intelligent parrot is unlike that with any other pet - but, much of the success of that relationship depends on a responsible owner who understands and meets their parrot’s special physical and psychological needs.

Parrots Don’t Know How To Behave Taking the time to behaviorally train your parrot is essential to having a good pet. Parrots are intelligent and highly

Labrador retrievers tend to be outgoing and friendly. As a person, a Lab would likely be the romantic comedy-esque Romeo who caught your eye. Even if you don’t stay together, you’re always happy to see him. Likes: Flirting. Dislikes: Not being your favorite. German Shepherd: The Everyday Hero If any dog were going to be able to fly or shoot laser beams from her eyes, it’d be the courageous German shepherd. As a person, she’d likely

A tough bulldog will reveal his soft underbelly after you exhibit some love and affection. If he were a person, he’d be the Grandpa who wants the kids to “quiet down already!” but also slips the little ones a candy bar or dollar bill when his wife isn’t looking. Likes: The people who are

entrance. Likes: Hair accessories. Dislikes: Knots.

Beagle: The Go-With-the-Flow Friend

Poodle: The Popular Girl

A beagle is down for anything, whether you’re taking a nap, going for a car ride or eating a tasty snack. As a result, he’d likely be the friend in your group who prefers to leave it up to others to decide which restaurant to go to or which movie to see. Likes: Doing stuff you like! Dislikes: Nothing! Yorkshire Terrier: The Glamorous Goddess

Yorkies are known for their long, flowing hair and beautiful appearance. If your Yorkie was a person, she’d be the girl who heads to the bowling alley dressed like she’s going to meet the Queen. She just needs “one sec” to check her hair from the back. Although this routine can get a bit annoying, the Glamorous Goddess is worth the wait! She’s fun to be around and she sure can make an

Poodles tend to emit a certain sense of confidence and attitude when they strut their stuff down the sidewalk. If your poodle was a person, she’d be just as clever as she is put together. And though she might look like all she cares about is her designer handbag, she’s smart enough to back up her ego with sheer intelligence. Likes: Good hair days. Dislikes: Almost everyone at every party. Boxer: The Protector

Boxers are known for being good guard dogs. If this pet were to take on a human form, he’d be the guy you can count on to defend you and your friends. Though the Protector’s energetic nature may make him kind of exhausting to be around, you want him on your side. Likes: Marking his territory. Dislikes: People who are rude to his friends.

Rottweiler: The Jock The first thing you may notice about a Rottweiler is his bulky appearance. In fact, some tend to be quite muscular! As a human, this breed would translate well to the Jock. You’ll typically find him at the gym, where he spends three to six hours a day working out. Likes: The smell of sweat. Dislikes: Pulling a hammy.

fact that her ears look sort of funny today. But once she relaxes, she’s great to be around. Likes: Meeting new people. Dislikes: Meeting new people.

Great Dane: The Homebody A Great Dane is the kind of dependable dog that just loves to snuggle up on the couch, which makes him the perfect fit for the Homebody persona. In human form, he might be the guy who prioritizes napping over basketball tryouts. And, though he’s super grown-up looking, he’s probably not too into the idea of getting a job or moving out of his mother’s house. Instead, he’s the kind of friend you love to hang out with when you’ve had a bad day and just want to sit back and order a pizza. Likes: Naps and Netflix binges. Dislikes: Alarm clocks. Dachshund: The Self-Conscious Friend A dachshund’s long torso and short legs may make her feel like a bit of an outcast among her fellow canines. As such, she’d likely be the friend in your group who’s always a bit self-conscious. No matter how much you remind her of her many good qualities, she tends to focus on the

How can such an animal bring such joy to the world? If you are lucky enough to share your life with a pet like Katie, you must wonder too. It was love at first site, she came from the streets of Okeechobee found with her two brothers at four weeks of age, and wound her way around my heart. Katie was a dog’s dog. She loved life and was so playful and social with animals and people. She was very kind and compassionate and quite sensitive to the needs of others. Katie was a healer and I’d say she rescued me just in the nick of time. Katie shared her life with her dog siblings, Hammer and Simba along with me and Daddy, Tom. We all know we are better people to have had Katie in our lives, and Katie... will never leave my heart. -Lisa Holland

FIVE COUPLES WHO MET BECAUSE OF THEIR PETS

People meet in all sorts of ways, but these couples have their pets to thank for their love connection! Pet lovers meet in the most surprising ways. These stories of love, and how pets can bring people together, will truly warm your heart:

DOG PORTRAIT Dawn Maslar and her partner Ed Biggie of Davie, Florida have been together for nine years -- all because of Ed’s dog. Ed was out with his dog chatting with Dawn’s friend’s husband, so she stopped to join in the conversation. At the time, Dawn was painting pet portraits, so she gave Ed her card. “Well, he was interested -- not in the painting, but in me! We started

Danielle apologized and pulled her back. She says, “He seemed a little annoyed and grumpy that afternoon. He’s a landscaper and had worked a long day and was tired.” Not a huge pet lover, Jim was busy establishing his company so he had no social life. His mother told him repeatedly that if he was ever going to get married, the girl would have to come right to the front door ... and she did! Jim started working for Danielle and eventually he asked her to dinner. Today they celebrate 19 years of marriage, all thanks to Chelsea! CAR LOT LOVE Dr. Dave Popple used to visit a large car lot after hours to let his Pomeranian dog Maxx run around while Dave checked out the cars. He mentioned this to a fellow student named Jody who lived nearby and she started joining him. “Maxx would be gone for 10 to 15 minutes and then run back to find me. This created an interesting rhythm for me and Jody to focus

on getting to know each other,” Dave says. Four years later the car business closed and the lot was empty with weeds. Dave and Jody returned there for a walk. Dave says, “I secretly attached a wedding ring to Maxx’s collar and let him run. After reminiscing about the old days walking around the lot, I asked her to marry me. Maxx ran up to us at that moment with the ring in his collar and she said yes.” They’ve been married for 14 years. THE BENEFIT OF MUSIC FOR CATS

Here’s everything you need to know about music for cats!

oes your cat disapprove of your taste in music? There’s a reason for that! Research shows that cats are more likely to be interested in cat music than human music, says Charles T. Snowdon , a Hilldale Professor Emeritus in the department of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the lead author of the study, “Cats Prefer Species-Appropriate Music.”

for calming and enrichment,” says Dr. Susan Wagner , an integrative medicine doctor at MedVet Columbus and an adjunct assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

How Can You Use Music With Your Cats?

Do you like to leave the radio on when you’re out of the house as a way to keep your cat company? If so, it’s important for you to choose the music that you play wisely, as it has the potential to do more harm than good. According to Snowdon, you must be sure to avoid any music that

Dr. Wagner, who specializes in music therapy for animals, recommends two types of music for cats: calming (to reduce stress) and enriching (to stimulate). “Calming music has lower Didn’t think that music for cats tones, slower tempos and minimal existed? may induce negative emotions in your furry companion. What Are the Benefits of Music for Cats? There are many benefits of introducing your cat to the world of music. According to Dr. Wagner, you should play calming music for at least an hour a day if your pet tends to be anxious or scared. And “enriching music is especially wonderful for indoor cats,” she adds. According to Dr. Wagner, music therapy can be used to help cats who are suffering from a variety of serious medical conditions. “I have recommended music for my feline patients who suffer from anxiety or disorders that are exacerbated by anxiety, such as Feline Interstitial Cystitis, Herpes or Inflammatory Bowel Disease,” she says. “I also have found it helpful in any chronic

condition that creates stress, whether it is osteoarthritis, diabetes or cancer.” According to Snowdon, music also does wonders for feral cats. “One of the main benefits of the cat music may be to help animals that have previously been abused or neglected to develop confidence in their new human companions,” he says. For instance, this music may urge an unresponsive stray cat to approach and interact with a new owner. Ideally, you and your kitty can come to a mutual agreement on what type of music to play in your home. “There needs to be a balance between music for humans and for cats when both are together,” says Snowdon. Bigger isn’t always better. Every town has their “name brand” shelter – the one everybody recognizes. What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.
