t’s April...spring has sprung and another issue of Pet Junction is complete. If you are reading this, then it is already in your hands. I have got to tell you I am really excited about this issue of Pet Junction! We have got a spectacular issue for you and it’s been such a pleasure putting it together. t’s getting more common to see “Fido” on board with the family. A recent survey of boat owners in the U.S. showed that 70% of them own dogs. Not sure if your dog and your boat are a good fit? In general, a dog that is accustomed to noise, comfortable around water, well behaved, and listens to “down” and “stay” commands can make a fine boating companion. Excitable or skittish dogs may not be the best boating pals.

The first priority of a responsible dog owner should be the safety and well being of their dog. To keep your dog safe, you need to know your pet: Does he like water? Is he afraid of noise? Does he listen to you? Some dogs just don’t like water and some dogs don’t like to swim. If you don’t know how your dog will react near water or boats, you should find out before you actually plan a trip. Visit a boat dock or launch area and see how your dog reacts to the surroundings. APRIL 15 - JULY 15 2019
As a boat operator, you are also responsible for the safety and well being of your human passengers. Will your dog being onboard be a distraction to you? If your dog needs continual attention from you, or if any of your passengers are not comfortable with your dog, you should reconsider taking your dog onboard. DOG ONBOARD Ensure your dog exhibits proper behavior at all times while on a boat. That means staying in one place, which is especially important on smaller boats, no frantic movements, no distractive barking, etc. Be sure your pet knows where she belongs in the boat and stays there while the vessel is in motion. If you’ve never had your dog on the boat, practice a “dry run” – where your boat is loaded with everything else you take on an outing. Be sure you have all the equipment on board you usually would and that it is stowed where you normally put it. Put the dog on board and determine where the safest and most comfortable place is for your pet. Some safety professionals suggest counting your dog as a person in the boat because they can require space (taking up a seat) and can move on their own inside the boat. Definitely include their weight when calculating your boat capacity. Make sure that you have a plan for when your dog goes overboard, whether that is voluntarily or not. If your dog is a swimmer, be sure you have practiced getting your dog back into the boat, whether you are in the water with him/her or not. Many pet flotation devices have a gripping handle incorporated into the design, which can be very helpful.
And just as you plan food, drink, and restroom stops for yourself and your passengers, make sure you are prepared for your dog. Have a water bowl and snacks for your dog, and bring her leash and bags for waste cleanup. You never know when a treat can come in handy, or when you will need a plastic bag. PFDS FOR DOGS It’s now common to see dogs of all breeds on boats and around the water outfitted with a specially designed canine flotation vest. The choices on the market today for dogs are similar in many ways to the options we have for people. They come in a variety of colors, have varying warmth factors, and offer different amounts of flotation. Buying a flotation device for a dog is a lot like buying one for a human: The main concern should be getting a device that properly fits your dog. Make sure the flotation device has the characteristics your dog needs, like added warmth from neoprene if water temperature requires it. Most have a gripping handle for lifting the dog back into the boat. Make sure you know the weight limits of the device. You should consider taking your dog with you to the store so you can fit the device before buying , but be sure to call ahead to make sure that’s okay. From Sally’s Baking Addiction
Directions: Preheat oven to 325°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
Ingredients: 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter, NO Xylitol. 3/4 cup nonfat milk 1 large egg (or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce) 2 cups whole wheat flour* (measured correctly) 1 Tablespoon baking powder 1/3 cup oats (either wholerolled or quick oats are fine) 2-3 strips cooked bacon, chopped
In a large bowl, gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy. Using a floured rolling pin, cut into shapes using cookie cutters or a knife. Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving to your pup. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Make ahead/freezing: Since the pups can’t eat the whole batch in a week, you can freeze them. Dogs love them right out of the freezer! The treats freeze well for up to 2 months. 25 I

here do you purchase your pet food? If you are like the majority of people, you probably buy pet food at the grocery store or pet store. Is there really any difference between brands? Which is the best food? We will break pet foods down into the following broad categories: • Over the counter Diets (most grocery store brands) • Premium Diets (some pet store brands, some veterinary hospital brands) • Home Cooked Diets • Raw Food Diets As a general rule, higher quality pet foods cost more. Over the counter diets (e.g. generic brands, grocery store brands) contain a lot of cereal, which has low nutrient value contributing to

more stool. The protein can be poor quality, possibly containing beaks, feet, and feathers. Synthetic preservatives like BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin are frequently used as well as artificial coloring and flavoring. The park is located just west of I-95 and the traffic is pretty loud but once you are there for a little while, you really don’t hear it too much. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. I reasoned by then I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head.

The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife’s wishes to adopt a cute little kitten. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem. Then one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when my wife, Deb called out to me from the kitchen, “Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it.” “You know where the button is,” I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. Reset it yourself!” “But APRIL 15 - JULY 15 2019
I’m scared!” she persisted. “What if it starts going and sucks me in?” There was a meaningful pause and then, “C’mon, it will only take you a second.” So out I came, dripping wet and buck naked hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behavior as extremely cowardly. Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing. It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn’t the hexed disposal drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty which discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. At the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leaped at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed with the full weight of a kitten hanging
from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a fight or flight situation. Men in THIS predicament choose only the “flight” option, I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor buck naked in front of a group of “been here, done-that” paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter and not succeeding. Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back into the office where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. “What’s the matter?” They all asked, “Cat got your tongue?” If they only knew! 47 I

HISTORY OF THE DOMESTIC CAT Cats have always been a source of fascination for mankind throughout history.
T
oday cats have become one of the world’s most popular pets perfectly suited to the lifestyle of our day. They are beautiful, enigmatic and easy-tocare-for pets. But where and when did the domestic cat originate? This article should give you some insight into this question. It has been about 4000 years since the first cats were domesticated. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to keep and use cats to control vermin and other pests to protect stores of food. In Ancient Egypt, the cat was revered as a hunter and worshiped as a God and/or Goddess. The ancient Egyptians imposed the death penalty for killing cats and cats were also mummified before being buried. Other ancient civilizations later began to domesticate the cat and took tame felines to Italy where they slowly spread around Europe. Eventually, they arrived in the New World with the Pilgrims. The shorthaired domestic cat spread across the world from Egypt while longhaired cats came later from Turkey and Iran. The domestic cat also spread from India to China and Japan. Except for a short period of persecution in the Middle Ages when cats were associated with
the devil, by the eighteenth-century cats had become popular household pets worldwide. The wild cats of today such as Lions and Tigers descended from early carnivores called Miacids. From there the modern wild cat developed into three main types; the European wild cat, the African wild cat, and the Asiatic desert cat. The domestic cat is thought to have evolved from the African wild cat because of its tabby markings. Domestic cats today still take many characteristics from their wild ancestors. The arresting eyes, body shape, feeding and grooming habits are the same, along with the ability to pounce into action at any given moment. It is this link that makes the domestic cat so fascinating around the world. The non-pedigree domestic cat, the Moggie is the most popular house pet today with the black and white Moggie being the most popular, then the black cat, followed by the Tabby cat. There are also 36 recognized breeds of pedigree cats around the world with the Siamese cat being the most popular. Most homes today that keep pets have at least one cat in residence. 51 I

If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and moldy crusts of bread. BICYCLES (n.pl.) Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards. WASTEBASKET (n.) This is a dog toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrappers. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person comes home. SOFAS (n.pl.) Are to dogs like napkins are to people. After eating, it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean. BATH (n.) This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently. LEAN (v.) Every good dog’s response to the command “sit!” especially if your person is dressed for an evening out and it is incredibly effective before black-tie events. BUMP (v.) The best way to get your human’s attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea. GOOSE BUMP (v.) A maneuver used as a last resort when the Regular Bump doesn’t get the attention you require, especially effective when combined with Sniff. See above. LOVE (n.) Is a feeling of intense affection given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you’re lucky, a human will love you in return. PET JUNCTION

he basis of all healthy aquariums is what we call biological filtration. This is the presence of good nitrifying bacteria that breaks down raw fish waste (ammonia) into a less toxic form of waste (nitrates). This process begins when fish are introduced into the aquarium. Because the fish are being fed they are producing waste. The nitrogen cycle begins as the invisible good bacteria start to populate the aquarium clinging to all surface areas and feeding on this waste. It takes an average of four weeks for a freshwater aquarium to go through this process and about six weeks for a salt-water aquarium. Because water conditions are at their worst for this period it is important to start with hardy fish that can endure these conditions and never overfeed or overpopulate the new aquarium.

and their benefits to the reef aquarium are immense. By processing the organic waste, which would otherwise settle and rot in your substrate, the detritivores can help maintain chemical balance within the tank. These fascinating animals are for the most part self-sufficient in the home aquarium, scavenging on the uneaten bits of fish food and waste fallen to the bottom of the tank. A new or very clean tank may not provide enough nutrients, in which case some food should be added about once a week. On the whole, these animals are hardy and do well even with the beginning hobbyist. Avoid drastic changes in pH and salinity-density by acclimating to new tanks appropriately.
