I
want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the all new Pet Junction! As you can see there’s been some major changes around here. Those of you who are avid Pet Junction readers will notice the change in the logo. Don’t worry, Pet Junction has only gotten better! In thinking about Pet Junction’s future, I had some soul searching to do about what exactly was the next step for it. I’ve always had big dreams for Pet Junction and now seemed the perfect time to move in that direction. Anthony Robins says, “The secret to happiness is progress.” I truly believe that and you have my word that Pet Junction will always be about progress. Progress in bringing better articles, better information, better products but most importantly, progress in bringing Pet Junction ever closer to it’s mission of keeping pets and their people together. I think as a magazine publishing four times per year instead of a directory publishing just once, Pet Junction will definitely be better able to do just that. My sincere

hope is that you love the all new Pet Junction as much as I do! From now on, our brand new website will work in tandum with the magazine. You’ll see things in the magazine that continue on the website and you’ll see things on the website that you won’t see here. I’ve been working night and day to get out to the dog parks to take pictures and video so you have a clear idea of what they’re all about before you get there. It’s pretty cool what we can do on the website in addition to what we do here in the magazine. Both are extremely important and we hope you will pick up every issue and visit the website often! Now let’s get to the good stuff! This issue is packed with some great articles from local contributors like Nancy, who wrote an awesome article about canine massage! Have a new puppy at home? You don’t want to miss Lisa’s article about puppy training. If you’re like me and you have cockatoos at home, don’t miss my Cocktoo Behavior Modification article! Honestly, Guys and Gals, this magazine is so full of great articles you’ll just have to peruse the pages yourself. BUT please do not miss our tribute to K-9 Deputy CIGO who was killed in the line of duty, sadly. Get to it and I’ll see you in April, same time, same sandbox! JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019

Bear started out as a high stressed rescue dog. He has great fear for loud noises, lightening and fireworks. Many dogs become stressed out over these noises, however, Bear tries to escape, opens windows and becomes very destructive. The owner’s goal was to calm him down so they could both live with less stress. I put him on a weekly massage program using calming strokes, essentials oils and relaxing music. Each week we could see Bear becoming more relaxed and now he will not run at the first loud noise. He still does not like fireworks but is much calmer when there is a storm or fireworks. I first became aware of canine massage when I started agility competition with my energetic Australian Shepherd, Angel. We started trials when she was seven, a little older than most people start training but she had an abundance of energy and loved it. During a three day agility competition I gave her massages and could see the benefits in her performance, with less bars dropped and sustained energy level the entire weekend. As she advanced in age I gave her massage for arthritis and to help her with range of motion and circulation. She loved her massages and would PET JUNCTION

totally relax. At fifteen years old she was having a hard time walking and getting around, so I increased her to weekly massages. This helped her with pain and blood circulation for her back and hind legs. When I felt her quality of life did not match her personality I planned a special day for her. She did all the favorite things she loved, swimming and having her buddies over. I gave her a Rainbow massage or end of life massage. I had an in home veterinary service come to my house; it was beautiful to see her totally relaxed as she moved on to her next journey. Angel inspired me to become a certified massage therapist because I saw how it improved her life. I love helping owners and their dogs live life to their fullest potential in health and spirit. Canine massage is worth considering for your best buddy! I am a Certified Therapeutic Canine Massage Therapist will come to your home for the comforts of your dog. JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019
he call comes, “I have a new puppy, or I’ve adopted a new dog and I need help now, what can I do?” Working with dogs and their people for so many years, I’ve heard just about everything, yet at times even I’m a little surprised. As a dog behaviorist, the first thing I like to do is establish what kind of relationship does the human want with the dog, along with how many humans are we talking about as there are some big families, and extended ones too. We must not forget the housekeeper, nanny or any other employee who will be dealing with the dog. Then I like to establish what kind of training the family wants. I’m into quality of life and practical application... when things don’t apply, skip it.
“
there are other training tools that are sweeter and nicer for the dog and easier for the human to learn. Let’s talk for a moment about the shock collar. That one is a “NO,” shock collars should only be used as last resorts or in very serious cases, with very special training. How about the issue of the crate or the “safe space,” as I call it. I like them and most dogs do, too. The humans must know the right and wrong way to use a crate. I find that humans need a lot of training in learning how to use a crate to their advantage. Yet when they do they never stop thanking me. Never leave a collar or leash on your dog in a crate... NEVER.
How about the issue of the crate or the “safe space,” as I call it. I like them and most dogs do too.
Some big questions are - do I have to use a choke chain, clicker, food, shock collar, crate,and/or leash? The answer to that, is it’s up to you, if you want to use any of these methods, you can, it’s your world and your voice you can say no or yes. However, we do have to use a leash, always in the beginning and if you’re lucky and work hard there are moments of a “leash-free world”...starting with the dog park. As far as the training collar is concerned (AKA choke chain), there is really no need to use it if you don’t want to as
“
T
Remember, it’s not for punishment it’s the safe space. I always think of crates as a crib or a play pen, it keeps the dogs safe and the house somewhat livable. Do we have to use food or treats for training? Just in how the question is asked I know whether or not the owner wants to use treats. I handle it this way, first I need to know what is the dog’s food drive like. Is the dog a chowhound...jumping like crazy for 27 I
PETJUNCTION411.COM
food? This is most common in dogs six months or older. In cases like this, when the human does not want to use treats for training, you have to find something else and it may take some creative thinking and work but it can be done. The human must also think this way if the dog is not interested in food. Usually a special toy comes in handy for this. I call it finding your dogs chocolate. Now we all know dogs CANNOT have chocolate I just happen to love it...the darker the better. You can call it your dogs’ pizza, get it? It’s what your dog lives for other than you. If you’re lucky enough to start training a puppy (the little buckets of love that they are) at eight to 12 weeks of age than things can go a little smoother. Using treats at this stage can be a big help, just think about what you’re using, it should be little pieces and something not too chewy. When I taught puppy kindergarten we did use treats in class, by the end of the six week class I made sure to show owners examples of rewards without food. I like that I can ask my dogs to come and they listen even though they won’t be getting a treat. It seems to me, being happy to see them is enough. PET JUNCTION
I 28
With my dogs, treats were used occasionally during that first year. I found their own kibble was a great treat at times, too. It was me being as consistent as possible, always following consistently through on my words - commands to them. Making sure they knew what I was talking about. This proved to work best for me. The most confusing aspect of training seems to be in using treats. There are so many questions involved; what to use, should I use lots of different ones, always the same, when to use them on commands, when teaching tricks, do I always use them every time, skip days? See, I told you it was confusing. In all my years I have yet to meet a dog and its owner that are the same as any other dog and its owner, thus using treats is unique to each partnership. Pay close attention to how it is working for you...that is all that matters. If it’s working for you great, if not move on and find something that does. Most of all enjoy the journey. Hey! Remember, love is a four legged word. Lisa Holland is co-owner of Fins, Furs, and Feathers Pet Shop in Boca Raton. You can reach her at, 561 - 391 - 5858. JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019

JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019
A
friend from LA called the other day and said she wanted to set up a phone session for her dog. I said, “You don’t need to.” “Why not?” she said. I said, “Because I already know what is going on.” I continued, ‘You’re calling me because your dog is depressed. She came to you depressed and fearful and you are depressed at times so the two of you are a great mirror and commiserate when you’re depressed. When you’re not depressed, you spend the rest of the time feeling sorry for her past. Therefore, you are falling into what I call default behavior.’” I told her to call me in a few days if she still wanted a session. We all fall into default behavior. We don’t allow the moment to exist. I explained to my friend that at that point in time, that dog was lucky. In fact, it had been lucky for the year they were together. It no longer had the sad circumstances it had before and in fact, she had a great life. She had a kid and a cat to look after, my friend loves her...it doesn’t get any better. When I saw her in person weeks later I asked about the dog. She said the switch was overnight. Once she acknowledged that this was a great life NOW, the dog could enjoy life. Not everything is that quick, but really it could be. When we default into certain feelings
we allow the animal to “get away” with certain behavior that is not serving the harmony of the household. If we continue to feel sorry for someone or stay hurt by something, we are not allowing them to be all that they can be. This is not to say that we need to be in denial, it’s the opposite. By staying in the past feelings, we are actually denying them the present, and who is better in the present than animals? Sometimes you already know the painful circumstances that the entire household is clinging to, if you don’t, it’s a good time to call in an Animal Communicator. Meanwhile, acknowledging the circumstances is important, but also acknowledging how great things are NOW is vital. Feelings are like waves in the ocean, they come and go. We all tend to forget the go part. Sometimes giving it a date to let it go, like we can all feel badly about this until next Friday, is a great way, you all might get bored by Tuesday and be on with the day. The following are typical examples of things WE ALL DO: Feeling guilty about going out of town or being away all day. If guilt was measured in dollar 31 I

“lucky day”. Encourage people that are in the rescue world to start finding other words like “sanctuary”. Nothing leads to bad behavior faster than the word rescue. We feel sorry for them and let them get away with things we wouldn’t let a kid do. There still has to be boundaries. Chances are good that if you are a caring guardian and are reading a magazine like this to learn to be better, your animal is already on the road to a charmed life. So just start expressing and enjoying it more!! But don’t forget boundaries and training. Staying mad about an episode in the past. This can create the never ending cycle of really bad behavior. Animals pick up on the pictures, words, and feelings of their guardians very quickly. When we hang on to an episode that infuriates us, unfortunately, we are creating a billboard for them to replicate the behavior. They are not necessarily picking up on our feelings about the event; they just see the instant replay in our mind and think they need to do it again. If your cat isn’t using the litter box and you’ve run blood work and you’re quite sure the problem is behavioral, rather than to cling to the image, try to sort out what they are ‘pissed off’
about while at the same time, picture them using the litter box. I know this is difficult but you can’t let your mind slip - not even at work. Forgive the behavior and send the picture you want. Being fearful of how the animal will behave. Again, this is billboard material, and when we get a little panicky about something - i.e. our dog gets leash aggressive and we don’t want to see any of the neighbors - unfortunately, we are setting them up not only in our mind but in our body language and the tone in our voice. At this point, the time and money spent on a good dog trainer is worth its weight in gold. You can’t afford the fear and must remember, you are in charge, it is your home, in fact at that moment you need to provide them with security. I am not pointing the finger at anyone. Over the years I have made all of these mistakes with dogs, cats, horses, etc. What I have found in life is there are no mistakes only lessons and our animal companions offer these so graciously! building a relationship
WITH YOUR HORSE MAURETTE HANSON
S
o, you want to have a relationship with your horse. You say, “I just want to go the pasture and have him come to me”, or “I want him to be happy to see me”. And you think “well all I have to do is give lots of love and treats and he will do what I ask,” Right? Wrong!
they blow nostril to nostril with no eye contact.
Your equine friend may only see you as its personal chef. Sure you have established who the caretaker is, your horse makes sure of that, but have you built a true relationship? A relationship built on respect?
So, although there was a greeting, a nip may occur, a stomp of the foot and/or a squeal. It is in these actions that respect is being built.
Respect is a word humans use but do we really understand what it means and how to give it? My favorite phrase these days is, “Respect given is Respect earned.” I believe this to be true in all our daily communications with each other. It is no different in the communication with our equine partner. As a matter of fact, it is a key component to building an equine partnership. Horses communicate through their body language. When greeting each other, PET JUNCTION

In that moment, a hierarchy is being created. In other words, horsy respect! But in an equine’s world, respect is demonstrated by dominance. One does not move up the hierarchy, unless one can show who is more dominate.
Now, I don’t recommend you go running up to a horse and start blowing into its nostril, unless you are experienced and you truly understand what is going on at that moment. However, there really is a way for us to communicate dominance, respectfully. Take the opportunity to observe horses together. Watch their body language. See if you can determine who may be the dominate one and what he/she does to demonstrate their dominance. Enjoy the time spent with your partner, no matter the species. They are our best teachers. ccidents, aggression, unruliness, challenges by your pooch, they are all coming if you are not the leader! If your dog has countless housetraining accidents, or other behavioral problems you are not alpha no matter how you THINK your dog views you. One way to develop alpha status is to simply catch your dog’s eye. Does your dog look at you often? Is it only on HIS terms? That is NOT eye contact. That is him telling you he wants something from you, but you CAN establish eye contact on your terms.
Don’t feel bad about walking off, his mom used the same technique when she was teaching him as a little pup to keep her her babies in line. If that didn’t work for mom, she’d give a low grow to get his attention.
I’ve witnessed this often, as recently as this past week, over and over again with a litter of pups and their mother that I am taking care of. So, if you’ve been While your dog will yelling at your dog... STOP and stop likely learn some today!

will never have your vocabulary, so dog speak is a great way to see how your tone influences him. In dog speak, the alpha growls, while littermates, whine, cry or whimper. So use that low tone and you will be regarded as alpha. Whine or whimper, and you are demoted to subordinate status. Remember, when you’re frustrated you may “whine by saying something like “PLEEEEASE, STOP DOING THAT BUDDY” - resulting in sounding like a littermate instead of alpha. For instance, some folks use a rolled up newspaper to discipline for a housebreaking accident. Not only is it inhumane, it just doesn’t work. Mom never ran to get a newspaper or any other implement for that matter. A low growl with eye contact will do the job, especially if caught in the act. Always make sure your pal has a collar on. If ever you reach for your dog and he plays that game of ‘catch me if you can,” you have been lowered to littermate status and are most definitely NOT ALPHA. Littermates play chase and enjoy it. Where do you reside? Have your dog wear a short leash around the house but only when you are home, for obvious safety reasons, and this will help to quickly resolve many problems before they become “the way it is”. You will soon appreciate the leash, knowing that you can retrieve him any time you want. You can start using this method at any age, to set new rules and a new pack order. This method works to resolve many behavioral problems and make training obedience so much easier. Some people like to spend the first few days using this method, with the leash actually tethered to the person. This way your dog is always near you, looking up for his next job or command from you. After about 30 minutes of this, let them off the leash, they will continue to “check in” with you throughout the day. Your dog will know he better pay attention soon enough. After a few days, just let that leash drag around the house so you can always assert a command and be guaranteed that your request of him will be granted. JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019

n order to really understand how to change our cockatoo’s behavior, we have to first understand what it is they need from us in order to be happy. First, they need proper lodging, second they need proper food and last, they need lots and lots of love. Cockatoos are the most emotional of all the bird species. They need that connection with you if they are going to be happy and healthy. They need to be hugged, touched and loved deeply. Give a cockatoo those three things and you will have a bundle of joy for years to come. If your cockatoo is screaming all the time or is aggressive, something is wrong somewhere, and as their keepers it is our job to figure out what is wrong and where. So let’s break this down into three categories; health, food., and stimulation. Let’s look at health first. One very important thing to understand about birds in general is that they are a species that is preyed upon in the wild, and the worst thing that can happen to a bird is to be banished from its flock.
If the rest of the flock were to sense an illness in one of its members, they would run that member out of the flock, imposing a death sentence via a predator. So how does a sick flock member deal with an illness? They hide it until they die... So what does this have to do with your screaming, biting cockatoo? Your screaming and biting cockatoo may just have a serious illness that they don’t want you to know about. Your cockatoo may just be so sick that he doesn’t want to be touched or played with and standing on that perch feeling so miserable just may be making him want to scream like a maniac. When Picasso starts vocalizing more than usual or biting, the first thing I do is take him for a vet exam to make sure he’s not sick. Let that be your first step in determining what’s wrong where. Now let’s talk about food. Read any newspaper, watch any nightly news program and you’ll see more and more evidence of how important nutrition is to health. You’ll see school districts yanking soda machines out of schools because of the excessive sugar and caffeine in soda. You’ll see special reports about 47 I
PETJUNCTION411.COM
what chemicals are in what foods and how dangerous those chemicals are. Well guess what folks... those same chemicals, sugars, additives, and preservatives are making their way into your birds’ food. If you’re feeding your bird food that has been artificially colored...you’re feeding your bird sugar and who knows what else. Even if the food has not been artificially colored, it could still contain harmful chemicals. So what’s the harm in sugar? Have you ever seen a child go from being calm and pleasant one minute, eating a candy bar and the next minute they’re running up and down the walls, screaming, and crazy? Correlate that scenario with your cockatoo. Does he start screaming and bouncing of the sides of his cage after he eats? Does he bite and become aggressive? Is he unpredictable? Maybe it’s the food? You need to find a good food with no chemicals, preservatives, additives, or SUGAR. Then you need to make certain he gets a variety of pesticide free fruits and vegetables everyday. Once you’ve conquered these two issues, health and food, you can then PET JUNCTION
I 48
turn to the third issue, stimulation. Actually you can work on the stimulation issue at the same time your working on their health and food issues. So here we go, stimulation...toys, games, thought provoking situations, etc. I talked a little bit about proper lodging in the beginning of this article and stimulation and lodging go hand in hand. Your cockatoo needs a huge cage, no ifs, ands, or buts, about it. He needs room to move, swing, and flap his wings...a small cage just isn’t going to cut it for a cockatoo. You also need room to hang his toys as well, and a cockatoo should have four toys in his cage at any given time. Look, I know toys are expensive, but you brought him into your home so it’s your responsibility to keep him happy, and a happily stimulated cockatoo is a quieter cockatoo. So back to the expensive toys, he should have a wood chew toy, a toy with a lot of knots, a toy he can take apart and put back together, a toy he has to work at to get something out of, and a couple foot toys. JAN 15 - APRIL 15 2019
Rotate the toys once a week (if they last that long) and always try different toys. Buying the same toys all the time is a big mistake; wouldn’t you get bored playing with the same toys all the time, even if you loved them when you first got them? So change it up, your sanity will thank you for it. When it comes to stimulation, think outside the box. Place his cage somewhere in the house where he can look out the window, just make sure he’s up against a wall and has a place to go in his cage to feel safe, i.e., behind a large toy. Take him outside for a walk (you walk he rides), this works wonders for my birds. They get stimulation and sunlight at the same time, and it tires them out as well. Just make sure you have him in a birdie harness or an enclosure that he can see out of so he doesn’t get hurt. Watch for dogs! Many times dogs don’t pay much attention to a bird that a person is carrying, but it only takes one dog to grab your bird, so be very mindful of the danger dogs pose. Play fetch with him; just be careful because cockatoos get aggressive when they play. Teach them tricks, they love to learn!
The bottom line is there is so much you can do to increase the amount of stimulation your cockatoo gets and they’re smart...they need to be stimulated! There are several new studies that indicate parrots are more intelligent than dolphins, give them what they need to feed that intelligence. Hopefully this article has given you a starting point. From my own experience, beginning with the basics is the best way to begin. I hope all of you fellow cockatoo owners understand that there are times when your cockatoo is going to scream like crazy, that’s okay it’s healthy and normal. My birds scream in the morning and then again at night but they know when it’s okay and when it’s not okay to scream. Teaching them when it’s not appropriate to scream and ways to control it is what we’ll talk about in the next issue.
Shelly Allen has shared her home with cockatoos for 17 years. She has learned how to co-exist with them and keep a somewhat controlled noise level in her home. She is also the owner and publisher of Pet Junction. 49 I

efore purchasing a reptile there are many factors that should be considered. Each individual species has varying care requirements. The requirements to consider are hearing and lighting, types of food, cage/ enclosure size, substrate and financial responsibility for proper medical care and supplies. This article focuses on the topics of heating and lighting, deficiencies of these requirements are the number one reason for health problems that require veterinary care. Many people buy a small turtle or lizard, thinking
they are purchasing a simple low maintenance pet. Reptiles are anything but low maintenance. Each species of reptile has an ideal temperature range that they need to live within in order to function normally and be healthy. This is referred to as their Preferred the Optimal Thermal Zone (POTZ). To adequately measure the temperature, a thermometer that can easily be moved around the enclosure is a necessity. A digital model hat mounts on the outside of the environment and has a probe that can be moved around to measure different

areas of the habitat is ideal. Nearly every species needs a basking spot provided by a heat lamp as well as a sheltered area where they can escape the heat. For example, the Bearded Dragon lizard needs a daytime basking spot of approximately 95 degrees F with the rest of the enclosure maintained in the range of 75-80 degrees. At night the temperature needs to drop into a range of 60-70 degrees. When purchasing a new reptile, a visit to the local reptile veterinarian can help greatly in obtaining such information. Research into the proper husbandry for your new pet should be done prior to purchase. Reptiles are ectothermic. This means that their body temperature varies with the environment. Thus keeping a reptile in too cold an environment slows their body systems down and makes them susceptible to illness. Also too high of a temperature can result in skin burns or dehydration. The most common way to provide supplemental heat for a reptile is by using a heat lamp. This is preferred over heat rocks or heaters that are placed under the habitat. By using a heat lamp mounted above the animals habitat, you are providing heat in the manner that nature intended - from up above.
There is not at an ideal wattage of heat lamp, as it will vary depending on the size of your pet’s habitat. A thermometer must be used to ascertain the correct height at which to put the lamp. Simply, a stronger lamp likely will need to be placed farther away from the spot where the reptile sits to bask. The probe for the thermometer should be placed right where the animal basks to check the basking temperature. If it is too high, the lamp should be moved further away. If it is too low, the lamp should be moved closer. Geographic location is an important consideration as well. When the outdoor the temperature is warm and within the ideal range for your reptile, then he/she should definitely be caged outside if possible. Economically this is sensible as this saves you the cost of a heat lamp. Housing your reptile outside also provides the highly important requirement of ultraviolet light type B. Note: care needs to be taken to ensure that your pet’s habitat is sturdy enough to prevent injury from local wildlife knocking the cage over or reaching inside. Be sure that the animal has access to shade in part of the habitat. Ultraviolet light is divided into three sections - UVA, UVB and UVC, and is invisible to the human eye. It comprises higher energy waves and shorter 53 I
PETJUNCTION411.COM
wavelengths. These wavelengths are produced naturally by the sun, but are filtered out by glass, plastic and even fine mesh screen. Thus, reptiles housed indoors near a window do not receive any of the beneficial UVB rays from the sun. UVB has many important qualities useful to reptiles. Primarily, UVB light activates the synthesis of vitamin D3, which is a prerequisite for the absorption of calcium and other minerals from the diet. This is especially important for herbivorous (plant eating) reptiles. Carnivores and omnivores get D3 from the diet as well as sun exposure. Unfortunately, plants only contain D2, thus vegetarian retiles have no backup source of D3 if not getting UVB light. So you ask, why does it matter if my reptile ends up with vitamin D3 deficiency due to the lack of UVB? Low vitamin D3 leads to low calcium, which leads to a condition called Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). Metabolic Bone Disease is a severe problem in reptiles as bones/shells become soft, grow abnormally or not at all and easily break. The sun also naturally produces UVA light. This is the range of light in which reptiles can see and may stimulate many natural behaviors such as breeding season. PET JUNCTION
I 54
Artificial UVB and UVA fluorescent lights are available for purchase and if your reptile must be housed indoors, then such lights are necessary. This is the advantage of sunlight. Sunlight provides both UVB and UVA light in greater quantity then the artifcial lights. Direct sunlight removes the worry about replacing the UV bulbs. At our hospital we recommend a minimum of 10 hours per week of direct, unfiltered sunlight. Again, the reptile cannot be placed outside in his aquarium, as the glass will block out the UVB light. Also an aquarium in direct sun acts like a greenhouse, enclosing in the heat and possibly killing your pet. A well-ventilated, open-air cage is recommended. A shelter and large water dish is required in this cage so your pet can escape the heat if he/ she is getting overheated. The basking cage should be sturdy and safe. The pet should be supervised or checked frequently when outdoors. As you can see, this article has not even started to discuss the concepts of humidity, diet, enclosure size/space and substrate, all of which vary considerably on the species of your pet. A reptile is not a low maintenance animal, but with plenty of research prior to purchase, a visit to a reptile veterinarian and some fresh air and sunshine, your pet can live a healthy, happy life. Cigo was killed in the line of duty in Wellington on December 24, 2018 doing what he did best, protecting the public and defending the life of his handler. He was three years old.
As a community, we thank Cigo for his service and his sacrifice. Even though we know all animals need jobs and to feel useful, there are some animals that are made to hear the call of duty. The dogs that excel enough to be called “K-9 Officer are the epitome of the modern service animal.
