I am house & kennel trained, and do well on & off leash. Lap It Up There’s so much “buzz” about the cost of spaying and neutering our companion friends that we thought we’d start a new column in this issue called “Opinion” (pg. 10), and right out of the gate we’re looking for your ideas and thoughts about this subject. It seems every month more and more animals need to be taken into rescue and more and more are showing up on online sites needing new homes. With our overpopulation of pets, spay and neuter has to be a high priority right next to committment. The message needs to get out, “If you commit to a companion pet, then commit for life.” A prime example of both of these topics is found in the story of ApplePuff and Dollop on page 16. Also, you can find us on Facebook, along with 5 million other people, but we still feel we’re pretty special...or should we say the animals that we feature are. Have fun reading, and when you’re done it’s ok to say....“I could take them all home!” The PRM Team

Border Collie Friends Rescue

by Robyn Rosen

We currently have 13 Dogs looking for their forever homes! Quite a few of our dogs are seniors, that being 10+ years old. Wouldn’t you love to give a senior a warm, loving home to live out their years?

A Dog’s Purpose By W. Bruce Cameron

Best-selling author and award-winning national columnist W. Bruce Cameron takes readers on a journey through the life of a dog as seen through the eyes of a dog in his first novel, A Dog’s Purpose. A Dog’s Purpose is narrated by Toby, a dog who is born, lives, dies, and then finds himself reborn again and again, eventually understanding that he has learned something from each life that helps him find his ultimate purpose. The book is filled with amusing situations every dog owner can relate to. Each life, for example, brings with it the dreaded trip to the vet to be spayed or neutered and the embarrassing head cone; if you’ve ever wondered what your dog thought about that experience, Toby tells you. You also get a dog’s perspective on everything from boredom and food to human relationships and the family cat. Be prepared; the laughs are frequent but so are the tears. The relationships between the dogs and the humans are poignant and often emotional. But the laughter and tears will, for many readers, also bring healing, especially if you’ve ever been with your dog at the end of his life. A must read for every dog lover! prm 4

At 11yrs young I am the resident senior named Bull and I just love to run & play fetch. I am one happy go lucky guy and I adore people, cats and other dogs. I am afraid of thunderstorms though so I will need your help to feel safe. I will truly make a lovely addition to any family I just need someone willing to give an older guy a chance.

My name is Shot and I am 8yrs old. I like attention but I don’t like to be over handled and have a strong herding drive so I am not suited to a home with kids, cats or other small animals. I have good leash manners, travel well, and I am very sweet with people.

My name is Spencer and I am looking for someone to SNUGGLE! When I came into rescue I was a little overweight but I have since slimmed down and I now love being active and playing with the other dogs. I am 4.5yrs old and super duper handsome.

Spay Neuter Action Progam Hi everyone, my name is Tabitha and I have been with SNAP a long time. I am super sweet but I would prefer to be the only cat in my new home as I am not very good at sharing my people. I just love them so much! My name is Splash and I am gorgeous. My name is Charlie and I am about 2yrs old. I am sweet and affectionate. I came to SNAP with my kittens and although I took great care of my little ones it is finally my turn to find someone to take care of me.

Animal advocates vow to make this year the beginning of the end to Canada’s stray cat crisis

“Many people do not realize it, but when it comes to cat overpopulation and the resulting burden on animal shelters, municipalities, and communities, Canada is in crisis,” says Dr. Elizabeth O’Brien, a veterinarian and spokesperson for Care for Cats.

“The nation’s animal shelters are overflowing with abandoned, lost and feral cats. Every year tens of thousands of healthy cats and kittens are euthanized because there are not enough homes for all of these cats.” How then do we put an end to this killing of an animal that deserves so much more from us? We change our perceptions. We learn to understand and accept their traits. We embrace them for their qualities as a companion animal. “The message we need to get to the public is not only about the importance of spaying and neutering cats as a means of population control,” concludes Dr. O’Brien. “we also have to try to change attitudes about the intrinsic value of cats in our society. In a nutshell, we need people to start treating cats like dogs!”

leek, graceful, and well engineered, the cat has for centuries been an object of human myth, metaphors and idioms. Revered or disliked with the rise and fall of popularity, the cat, at the end of the day, is a vibrant, beautiful, warm and endearing creature, that in our current day society has, let’s face it, become as disposable as a paper bag.

S

To quote Bob Dylan on his 1964 album “The times they are a-changin’. This year has been declared “Year of the Cat” by Care for Cats, a network of Canadian cat welfare advocates that includes the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS). Throughout 2011, the CFHS and other collaborators such as shelters, rescue organizations, animals services, vet clinics and retailers will deliver educational messages and events across Canada to bring attention to the major problems facing cats. The biggest problem of all? Stray cat overpopulation.

The Year of the Cat campaign will also promote a higher level of care for the 8.5 million cats living in Canadian homes. A study conducted in 2008 found that less than half of these cats received annual veterinary care and regular vaccinations. Less than 25 per cent have permanent identification. 2011, “Year of the Cat” is just the start of a forward movement to address current day issues and to re-brand kitty in a positive light. Through education, adoption, and raising the status of cats in our society we can all start to make a difference. For those of us working towards a better tomorrow for our cat population, this truly is “the cat’s meow!” For more information on the problems facing cats and what all Canadians can do to help save cats’ lives, see the CFHS website at: http://cfhs.ca/athome/2011_year_of_the_cat/

I am a fairly dominant mare in the herd and can be quite shy with people. Now that I know the volunteers around here I let some of them groom, halter & lead me… sometimes I even pick up my feet!

My name is Bud and the local word on the country roads is that I was abandoned when my owner left town. I patiently waited in the ditch for three days. It took awhile for SCARS to convince me there was nothing to wait for but hunger finally won me over. I am a sweet & loyal Border Collie X around 3yrs old. I am good with other dogs & cats, great off leash and love sticking close by.

My name is Twinkie and I’m very sweet. I was rescued at just 3mths old but unfortunately my leg injury was left too long and could not be closed due to infection. No worries though, with some hydrotherapy, antibiotics and tlc from my new foster home I should make a full recovery! I love to play with the big dogs, and even the cat but he doesn’t seem to really like it.

They call me Turbo and I have a small drooling thing going on, which is kinda cute until I rub against you! I seem to be fine with other dogs and I am good off leash. Despite actually being a big softie, my looks in your front window could scare the pants off of anyone.

My name is Lonnie and I have the cutest smile! I’m a large sweet gal who is possibly a Chow X. I am very friendly with people but I tend to be selective about other dogs, preferring male to female. I am not fond of cats, but I am house trained and well behaved on & off leash. I LOVE SQUEAKIES!

I am a 4yr old Shiba Inu X named Venus and I weigh about 48lbs. Can you believe someone left me outside in a crate in our freezing cold January weather? I am very polite and get along super well with the two dogs here. I am also great in my kennel and pretty good on leash.

My name is Clarkie (AKA Rimshot). You got it...I am a GORGEOUS 5yr old German Shepherd X. I am independent and not really interested in other dogs. If the cats aren’t afraid of me I just ignore them, but if they run I feel it is my duty to give chase. I sure hope my forever home will find me soon.

My name is Allegro which means fast & lively. I thought my charm and good looks would have the adoption applications rolling, but alas I am not getting noticed. I am athletic, intelligent, energetic and very HAPPY! I am a 1.5yr old Border Collie X and tip the scales at 70lbs. I also have the potential to be an agility dog “extraordinaire”.

Imagine

Furry Tails Do Come True By: Rachel Glube Rescue For Life

I

t was last spring that I first happened upon this pack of three dogs aimlessly wandering the highways of a rural community. The three – Missy Momma, Gretta Galiena, and Daphinee Davina - became one of many packs of dogs that I fed in this rural community. All were waiting to be rescued and offered a second chance with forever families. These deserving companion animals wander 20-50km a day simply in search of their next meal, or driven by the need to mate. Many nights I would drive out to this community with a trunk full of food to feed these starving strays. This pack of dogs and many others would come chasing after my car knowing that their next meal had arrived. In the midst of the night, no matter the season, I would open my car door and start calling to the strays in the area. On this particular stretch of highway, I would wait blindly, straining to hear the nails against the pavement of Missy, Gretta, and Daphinee. Out of the darkness, these three gentle souls would emerge, half crawling on the highway, first begging 12

February/March 2011

for affection and then greedily going towards the long pile of food spread out for them in the snow off the shoulder of the highway. Looking upon them, I would stand there making corrections with a low growl, to make sure all three would get a decent meal. Even in these very fleeting minutes on the side of a desolate highway I would establish myself as a gentle alpha, preparing these dogs for the next step of their journey – integration with a human pack. Many of you may ask - why not save these three deserving souls upon first finding them? The hard part is prioritizing and deciding which of the many hundreds in this community are next to be rescued. After rescuing many others that were in dire need due to severe health issues these three became a priority – they were deserving and they were at high risk due to their location close to a main highway. Not to mention their outward longing to be with someone. What really spurred the rescue of this pack was the fact that Missy Momma was observed pregnant last October. local stories...local people...local pets

We guessed she only had a couple of weeks left in her pregnancy. We scrambled to find a foster home for this gentle girl – one that would foster her through her pregnancy. After firming up foster care, we went out to rescue her. All three of them came clamouring for attention, but unfortunately due to the lack of foster homes I could only bring Missy home with me that night. The most difficult part of the work we do is leaving behind the ones that are begging to be rescued. Every night we say a prayer for those that are waiting for their second chance – we said many for Missy, Gretta, and Daphinee. The wonderful Missy Momma gave birth – just four days later – to six healthy beautiful puppies. She was an amazing Mommy and beamed ear to ear with pride Missy Momma with her puppies – proud of her six little bundles of joy. People all over Western Canada fell in love with Missy Momma and her story. Even before she had weaned her puppies she had her forever home waiting for her. After weaning her pups, getting spayed, and putting on some much deserved weight she made a long one-way trip out to her thoroughly screened forever home in Vancouver, British Columbia! She is in absolute heaven with her kitty brother and her new Mom and Dad. The story continues with the rescue of Gretta Galiena in November. Of course, in the world of rescue things never go as planned! We had intended to rescue Daphinee and Gretta together so that one of the dogs would not have to remain out there by herself. However, on the day of the rescue, Gretta decided to jump into the car and was ready to start her new life! Poor Daphinee though was so scared and submissive no amount of effort could get her to do the same. Quite often, we only have one chance. Roaming strays are smart – if we fail, they are often too scared to come up to us for a second try. With a heavy heart and absolute frustration, we left Daphinee on her own – so many prayers were said for this girl so that she would gain enough confidence to be rescued, and that she would be graced with the opportunity for a better life. Gretta was driven straight to the vet clinic, where she actually resided for two whole weeks – she became the clinic dog and did not want to leave at the end of her stay! local stories...local people...local pets

During the two weeks we pondered whether or not we should bring Gretta back out to try and lure Daphinee. But with a sudden cold snap and the snowfall in November we decided it would simply not be a wise decision. Gretta is a Great Pyrenees cross, and being white she ran the highest risk of being hit by cars during the winter – we could not put Gretta in such a position. Gretta was spayed and moved to her foster home in Vulcan, Alberta. She became best friends with the resident dog (a former Rescue for Life dog) and her foster family worked towards making her that well rounded family pet – she loved all the attention! Through the efforts of the Manitoba Great Pyrenees and Mixed Breed Rescue, Gretta found her forever family – all the way in Brandon, Manitoba. The Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) located in Stony Plain, then helped to co-ordinate the transportation of Gretta to her anxiously waiting forever family. After many delays due to bad weather, Gretta Galiena is now residing with her fourGreta Galiena with her new kitty friend legged pack and he Mommy and Daddy – she is thrilled! This brings us to the third member of the pack – the ever deserving Daphinee. After surviving the wait, Daphinee was rescued in December. It appeared after Gretta’s rescue, Daphinee’s world had fallen apart – she no longer had a pack leader, she had to learn to become her own leader. I spent many evenings out in this rural community trying to lure Daphinee, but she did not have the confidence to trust and simply remained elusive. I kept up with the food drops so that she knew I still cared about her. About three weeks after losing Greta’s company, I noticed, on occasion, Daphinee was starting to come out of her shell. On one of my midnight food drops, I spotted Daphinee at the very last minute, coming out of the bush to eat some food. I jumped in my car, so not to scare her away, and rolled down both the front windows. It was very cold out and I sat there with the heat blowing on me, not sure she would come to me on her own. I sat in my car and I started calling her in my usual way – almost like a kissing sound, continued...pg 19 pet rescue magazine

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) Hey everyone, my name is Potter! I am 5yrs old and I really want my very own forever family. I am a wonderful girl and I deserve a loving home. I’m affectionate (but not needy) and my favorite thing is a warm fuzzy blanket to sleep on.

I’m Percy! I’m a 2yr old handsome tabby that loves my food as much as Garfield! I’m a gentle, talkative fluff ball who doesn’t have a mean bone in my body. A quiet, mature home where I’ll be the only animal and the center of your attention is just what I need.

Hey you guys, Bishop here. I’m a 1mth old Lab X puppy. I love everyone; two legs or four –it doesn’t matter to me! I am a typical mischievous puppy and I love running around and grabbing anything I can.

My name is Booker and I am a gentle, quiet and well mannered gentleman. I am house & crate trained, get along with everyone, and I’m not a speck of trouble to have around. I steer away from confrontation and really just want to be loved.

They call me Charlie and I am a young, but large, German Shepherd/Rottweiler X. I catch on quickly and I am already house & crate trained. I am quite a sensitive puppy and need a calm consistent owner who will teach me all I need to know about how to be a great dog!

Northern Spirit K9 Rescue (NSK9) My name is Henry and I was rescued from a First Nations community at just 8 wks old. With no one to care for me I was very hungry, cold...and so very lonely!!! I am a Collie/ Border Collie X, with maybe a little Great Pyrenees. I have been in a foster home for a few months now and I am doing wonderful! I am already house & crate trained and I love to play with other dogs of all sizes. I also show a lot of respect for cats and I’m a well behaved travel mate in the car. I love my car rides! I am wonderful with children and walk well on a leash. I ADORE tummy rubs and treats! I am about 5mths old now and I just keep growing so I will definitely need a big yard with lots of room to run and play. I am a social pup and do not like to be left alone outside so I would like to remain an indoor dog and be an active member of my new family. Please call soon!

ApplePuff By: Stephanie Belland

W

e found the ad in the newspaper just over 2 years ago. “Free to good home: two 4 month old kittens, and an 8 week pregnant cat.” Little alarm bells sounded in my head; an unwanted cat who was pregnant for the second time within 2 months of giving birth isn’t a sign of a particularly responsible guardian. Just as disconcerting was the fact that there was no phone number listed, only an address. I phoned my sister right away, and asked if she could give my boyfriend (Adam) and me a ride to a house to rescue a cat. She sighed knowingly, and agreed. My sister is very familiar with my focus on animal welfare.

After driving around for over an hour in some shifty neighbourhoods, we finally found the place we were looking for; a tiny basement suite right across from Rexall Place. The man who opened the door for us looked as though he’d lived through some hard times, and the suite was musty and filled with smoke. He informed us that the two kittens had been claimed earlier that day, but that the momma cat still needed a home. He crept into a bedroom and reappeared moments later with a bulgingly pregnant, shorthaired calico. Her name was Puff, but we decided to call her ApplePuff.

and Dollop

about the friendliest cat we’d ever met. The morning after we rescued her, I brought her to the South Side Animal Hospital, where I worked as an Animal Care Attendant. She was given a clean bill of health, and we were told that she could give birth at any time. The following month was a bit nervewracking. We kept a very close eye on Applepuff, and she went into false labour a couple of times. Thankfully, the SSAH vets were incredibly helpful and supportive, even making a couple of house-calls! I was confident that no matter what, Applepuff was in good hands.

she was noticeably exhausted, and we knew that she still wasn’t finished. We assisted in the delivery of the fifth and sixth kittens, tore the umbilical cords and cleared the afterbirth from their faces. It was one of the most intense experiences of our lives. When all of the kittens were settled and feeding, we gave them some privacy. As soon as the kittens were out of her, we were shocked at how emaciated Applepuff was; she had obviously been severely neglected at her previous home. Luckily she had a big appetite, so we had no trouble at all putting weight on her.

On February 13, at around 5pm, a very excited Adam called me at work. Applepuff was finally giving birth! I rushed home to find that she had already borne 2 kittens, but there were definitely more on the way. Adam and I sat with her during the whole miraculous process. After the fourth kitten,

The kittens grew incredibly fast, and being a part of it was a joy… it was fascinating how they all had such distinct personalities right from the start. We took them for regular vet visits to make sure they were all healthy and had their vaccines; and the only kitten who had any health concern was Dollop, who had a Grade

We set her up in a spare bedroom all decked out with space-heaters, loads of blankets, a mattress, and lots of hiding spots where she could nest. We fell in love with her immediately. She was incredible well-adjusted, and just 16

I heart murmur. The vet informed us that they can often grow out of them, but we decided to wait for Dollop’s to clear up before re-homing her. As soon as they were weaned, Applepuff was spayed (she had already had 2 litters of 6 before she was even a year and a half old!), and we began to search for proper homes for all of the kittens. Toth Renoir and Xiomara went to a friend of ours, (and we still get to visit with them quite often), Hello and Scuba Steve went to a couple that was recommended by our vet, and Butters went to our friend’s twin sister.

The sixth kitten, Dollop, remained with us. By the time her heart murmur had disappeared Adam and I were much too attached to let her go. We also kept Applepuff, (who now mostly goes by Mama-Puff ), and she and Dollop are thick as thieves! All of the kittens were spayed and neutered.

Furry Tails Do Come True continued from pg 13 the one you would use for a cat. To my delight, she responded. She ran straight around to my side of the car. I opened the door to say hello to her. She was exuberantly happy to see me – she did not realize how much I had stressed over her.

The next day I took her to the vet clinic for a vet check and an ultrasound to make sure she was not pregnant. She was then placed into foster care. Daphinee is the third remaining pack member of the “troupe” and we often ask her “Where do you think your forever family is going to be?” Daphinee is up for adoption with Rescue for Life – she is an amazingly gentle, submissive girl, who is great with dogs, cats, and now of course loves people.

So happy, that she half-jumped into my lap while I sat there in the middle of a highway at midnight. This time, she was going to be resRescue is not an easy job. It takes dedicued. Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS) They call me Chunky and I love getting attention - but only when I want it so I’d prefer you leave me be if you see me curled up and cozy. I am a wonderful boy, but I do have a few anxiety issues and require that special someone to provide me with a loving home.

My Name is Muffin, and I’m one of four cats that were abandoned in a receivership sale. We were so hungry and cold before BARS came to our rescue! I am a nice girl who deserves a loving home. Could that be with you?

Animals At Risk Of Losing Their Safe Haven

My name is Mandy and I came in with Muffin. Some people seem to have a mindset that cats can survive on their own. Unfortunately, many of us perish at a young age due to disease, starvation, exposure and predators.

Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS) has been working hard for over a year creating a safe haven for rescue animals before they are adopted out to their new lifelong homes. However, the society now finds itself at risk, and along with it the many animals that might, in the future, have benefited from its existence. Terry Colborn, president and founder of BARS, noticed a real need in the Barrhead area for an animal rescue organization, his love for animals spurred him on to save the abandoned and abused from his area, and today BARS is recognized as a non-profit, charitable organization which accredits saving about 120 animals in its list of accomplishments. Their problem, unfortunately, due to health reasons, is Colborne will no longer be able to continue in the role of president. With his term ending Sept. 30, he is looking to secure candidates for the role by June 30, otherwise the organization may cease to exist – something Colborne does not want to see happen. He fully maintains a vision for the society and knows that in order to go forward as a successful and meaningful operation some things have to change. First, BARS needs to elect a new president who is able to put forth a no-nonsense mandate with a clear vision that includes short and long term goals. A development program for expanding foster care needs to be implemented, and the society needs local stories...local people...local pets

Kudo’s to Paradise Pet Centre

What’s In The Stars For Your Pets?

There has been a flurry of media surrounding the decision of Paradise Pet Centre, St Albert, to use their store to adopt out rescue animals and to end the sale of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that has been their practice for the last 30 years.

Aries: March 21 - April 19 The horizon looks good for you but your impatience to get the dog & pony show on the road could sabotage your efforts. Don’t let your whining, scratching or chewing get out of hand and keep your eyes on the ball!

This is a “forward thinking move” and sets the tone for other pet stores, who are currently providing companion pets for sale, to change their policies.

Taurus: April 20 - May 20 The world is your oyster and adventures are constantly calling you out to play. Share the delights of exploring outdoors with your two legged friends, but be careful not to let your nose lead your pack astray.

In conjunction with the Edmonton Humane Society and other rescue organizations the store is promoting the adoption of homeless companion animals to help curb the pet overpopulation in our area. One hundred percent of the adoption money will go back to the rescue societies adopting from their store. Find out more about Paradise Pet Centre by visiting them, or go online www.paradisepetcentre.com

New Beginnings Rabbit Rescue My name is Alvin because of my coloring and chipmunk cheeks. I am Honey & Isaac’s brother. I LOVE playing outside of my kennel & digging in newspaper is totally my thing. I will be 2yrs old this spring and sure hope to find a forever home with another bunny soon.

My name is Honey and I am looking for a bunderful friend to spend some one-on-one time with and to bring me out of my shell. I love the morning sunshine & stretching out in cardboard boxes. I also like to playfully dive under a fresh pile of hay once it is given to me for my lunch.

My name is Daisy and I am a pretty happy girl…especially when it comes to food! I hop around in excitement when I hear you coming with a bag of fresh hay. I also like to toss my toys around in the middle of the night to try and wake up my friends. I was rescued from the Millwoods area during Easter.

My name is Isaac. I am Honey & Alvin’s brother. I am super duper outgoing & ADORE playtime out of my kennel. I beg for my nightly feed of pellets and I really enjoy dried papaya, but what I love the most is a good HEAD RUB. I am about 3lbs and will require molar trims from the bunny doctor.

We are two love buns that are in the process of bonding. My name is Nanou and this is Lennox. I wouldn’t mind if he were my husbun but we are still dating until he learns to be a bit gentler. I am spayed, and I love pellets, cilantro & carrots. I am also quite vocal for a bunny. Lennox was found in an industrial park in the middle of winter and is a little shy. We will both require molar tooth trims on occasion.
