Little Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society I am Lacy Love. I am 2yrs old. I’m a super sweet girl that would love to be with a male cat in a forever home. I will try and sit up on your shoulder but as you can see I am not the smallest of kitties. I am a lap kitty. If you could find it in your hearts to open your home for me I will love you forever.

NEED A RESCUE

My name is Georgia. I came into care as a wild kitten with my brother Night. I am now very sweet and good with other cats. Dogs on the other hand may not be on my list of friends as I’ve never been around them. I’m sleek, silky, shiny and downright gorgeous.

Hi there my name is Night. There’s no brownie points for guessing why. I love to be around my people so much you have to be careful I don’t trip you up. I’m super friendly and have the shinest coat ever. Please, don’t overlook us black cats, we are purrfect.

Hi there, we are Dennis and Dexter. We are brothers and we need to find our forever home together. I’m Dennis and the ambassador of the two of us because I love, love, love to be with my human. I will help with vacumming, dishes, sweeping whatever it is you are doing I’m right along side with you. Dexter likes to sit and watch all the goings on but is always there ready for a little lovin’ anytime you are ready to dish it out. Please give us a chance... we are amazing!

ARTS Senior Animal Rescue My name is Buffy and I am a beautiful 12yr old Border Collie. I have been shuffled around a bit but ARTS is determined to find me a real forever home. I am a shy girl but I warm up quickly once I understand you are kind. I get along with cats, dogs & kids (as long as they don’t spook me). After knowing neglect, I can truly say that I am in awe of being treated as a special part of my foster family. They tell me that this is just the beginning of my new world and that being a senior just makes me even more special. Hugs, Buffy

CAUTION DOGS AT PLAY Everyone calls me Noelle. I am a 12-14yr old Manx X who was found out in the cold. I feel so much safer now, no more cold lonely nights for me! My eyes are the windows to my gentle soul and once I know you are a friend I am all yours. I get along with other cats as long as they are nice. Do you a place in your heart & home for me?

My name is Betty-Bear and I am a 7-8yr old Lab/Hound X. I was left at the shelter when my family moved away without me. It was a very sad day and it’s taken me a while to get over being abandoned. I have learned so many wonderful things about sharing my life with others and I am gaining confidence every day.

Pitbulls For Life Foundation Hi, I’m Flounder. I was rescued from BSL in Ontario. Everyone tells me I am the sweetest boy they have ever met. I love dogs, and I met those things called cats but didn’t really see the big deal about them. I am a very high energy dog, but I still love to cuddle and hang out with my humans. I love going on walks to explore… maybe we could go together? Hey it’s me Jonah… and I bet you thought I was a bunny. Yes, my ears are a little large but all the better to hear the cookie jar! I know I look a little worried, but I don’t have a care in the world. I am 4yrs old and really good with children. I don’t warm up too fast to male dogs, but I love the ladies. Although not opposed to naps and cuddles, I am pretty active... why don’t you show me a Frisbee!

Beagle Paws Animal Rescue My name is Beau, but I don’t mind if you would prefer to call me handsome. I am a very sweet & cuddly boy and my foster mom tells me that I have the cutest little face ever. I also have super soft ears & cheeks - both great places to smother me with kisses! I am an active lad who really enjoys going for a walk. My foster mom is great‌ but I would like to find my own family so she can take care of another little homeless doggie.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society

Hello world I’m Honey, and what a honey of a gal I am. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, people… little people, big people, weird people, ANY people! I am a 2yr old Pitbull and I am that lovely shade of blue grey that everyone loves. Did I mention I love people? That’s my forte, wiggles and cuddles and licks - that’s what you get from me.

Hey there everyone, my name is Jedd. I am a very handsome senior German Shepherd that is looking for an acreage or farm to retire too. I am good with cats, dogs, horses, goats - whatever you’ve got! I can’t wait to find my own home and settle in to love and adore my new family forever. Please come check me out!

Hello Rescue Fans. My name is Skype, I came to SCARS after being humanely trapped at a spay/neuter clinic. I had an injured leg that had to be amputated and I have come a long way. I’m not a very big girl, maybe 35lbs. I am looking for a calm home with a patient and understanding family. I can’t wait to share all my love!

Howdy, it’s me Jordan. If you got a 2015 SCARS calendar then you may recognize me as I am Miss January! I am not very interested in people, more of a one-person kind of dog. I need a quiet and mature home with and older & more confident dog. Ideally it would also be great to have a dog savvy person.

Hello folks! I am Leo, an older, very handsome, Karelian Bear Dog X. I have an old leg injury that causes me to stand with my back legs crossed, but it only adds to my dapper appeal! I am quite friendly and I enjoy attention, but I am also independent and I don’t mind hanging out and entertaining myself.

I am Trixie and I came with my buddy Soft from the same home. We are about 4-5yrs old and have always lived together. I am very sweet & loving. I weigh about 40lbs and although a little shy at first I do warm up quickly. It would truly make my world (not just my day!) to find a home with Soft, we are both great girls!

Hey, it’s me Tempest. My new foster mom LOVES me and thinks I’m super sweet. I like to be the only cat; I really don’t want to share the attention – I’m happy to take every last bit! I’m a bit more talkative than the average cat but I’ve got plenty to say… especially in the morning or when you get home.

Santa here. We’re thinking it may be best if I was an only cat in my new home since I’m so picky about my cat friends. I’m a really sweet & cuddly guy. I have been doing very well in my cat-free foster home. If you’re interested in adopting me hopefully we can set a date to meet up soon.

My name is Soft and I came Trixie from a great home but sadly our owner fell ill. I’m such a sweet girl and sooooo well behaved. I’m about 50lbs and possibly a Collie/Husky X. We have been good with other dogs and cats. I know it’s a lot to ask but in a perfect world, or at least mine, we would love to stay together.

I’m Jake. I am about 5yrs old and super smart. Are you looking for a dog that you can teach some new tricks? That would be me; I would love to learn as many new things as you will teach me. If you are looking for an active buddy to share your life with let SCARS know and we can get this party started!!!

I am a bay filly who was born on May 17, 2014. My name is Deva and I was purchased by a meat buyer at a September 2014 auction, before being saved by Adorado’s Legacy. I don’t know why no one wanted me, as I am told that I am very pretty, and smart - plus I was already AQHA registered! My registered name is Lenas Flashy Cue Bar, and my younger brother’s formal name is Peppys Skip Otoe. My dad (sire) is Peppy Kilocat, but my dam’s name is Lenas San Lou. A vet came to check me out, and I do have a small hernia that requires surgery, but once that is done, I will be absolutely perfect.

Note: Adorado’s Legacy horses are not those seized by authorties for neglect. The horses and foals are actually puchased by Adorado’s Legacy at auction to rescue them from being slaughtered. Their horses and foals are adopted under a contract meant to keep them safe for life. Meika’s Birdhouse Rescue

I am a 1yr old Green Cheek Conure. They call me Twitchy because it was really scary for me at my last home. It has taken awhile but the people here are not so bad and they have taken me places to meet other people who are not scary. As long as I can take my tent with me to hide in if I need to! I am still learning some of the so called easy stuff, sometimes I bite when I get tired or if something scares me. I would do best with an adult family and a quiet lifestyle.

I am a 14yr old Nanday Conure named Jimmy. I used to live alone and I really had nothing to do but pull out the feathers on my chest. I didn’t really like toys much. I have been around a bit so I know the ropes pretty well. I took in two Peach Fronted Conures and these sisters are always flying around… they would probably get into trouble if it weren’t for me! The three of us come together as Mango and Tango would be lost without me.

My name is Dexter. I am a very loyal and devoted Senegal Parrot. I am 12yrs old and have had two homes that loved and took great care of me. I really have no bad habits, other than I can be a little loud if I get too excited. They say I am a low maintenance bird that really just wants to be part of all the action.

We are 12yr old sisters named Mango and Tango. We are almost twins but Mango has an extra peach colored feather. We are very gentle and happy birds. We are happy to play with most people as long as Jimmy says it’s OK… but come 7pm Jimmy calls us home for bed. We do what Jimmy says because he gets upset easily and pulls his feathers if he doesn’t have us around. We must be adopted with Jimmy… he would be lost without us!

Northern Alberta Society For Animal Protection My name is Ginger. Unfortunately children under 5 make me nervous. I have never bitten anyone, but I will posture and back myself into a corner. I’m really sweet, very smart, and well trained. I love people and children once they are a little older and understand how to treat a small dog. I also love belly rubs, playing tug of war and cuddling with my people. I get along really well with other dogs and cats.

I’m MaKena. I was unclaimed from a local pound where I spent a month. I love to hang out with people and I really enjoy car rides. I also love cuddling. I am very clever and already house & crate trained. I would like a home that does not have small animals.

My name is Mei Ling. I’m a very good little girl who enjoys cuddles and lots of love. I don’t mind other dogs but I’m not fond of sharing. I’m working on that but I would prefer to be the only dog in my new family. I am available for adoption at the senior rate.

Hello! My name is Edith. I’m a short haired cat that was lucky to make it out of a full pound with my three kids (Cuthbert, Margery and Florence). I love to cuddle and curl up on laps. I’m looking forward to being a pampered house cat!

February/March 2015

My name is Florence. I’m very gentle and I like children and gentle dogs. I love to play fetch and I’ll play forever if you’ll play with me! I also love attention and curling up close for a nap. I have a sister called Margery and we’d really like to stay together if possible.

Hello out there, my name is Fodol. I am very affectionate and I like to cuddle. I love being with people and I am okay with dogs as well. I love playing with balls with, or without, bells or rattles inside of them. If you roll the ball for me I will play for hours. I would love to play with you!

Hello, my name is Gwendolynn. I’m an active young girl that came to NASAP when my time was up at their partner pound. I’m very outgoing and friendly. I love to rub up against you and get attention. I also love playing fetch with my small ball. I would be best as an indoor only cat.

They call me Henry and I’m a rascal! I’m on the go all the time. I like to have fun and play games, especially fetch. I’m very inquisitive as well as intelligent. I’m not shy and I love to cuddle. I have boundless energy so I would prefer a home without children, or animals, that do not enjoy playtime.

I’m Phoebe and I have six 2wk old kittens. I’m very affectionate and I love to have my head scratched. I enjoy giving head butts and I like to be the center of attention. I am young, healthy, and active. I would love to be in any home where I could get a lot of attention and playtime.

I am a very affectionate and sweet girl named Sheiba who will fit into any indoor-only home. My favorite pastimes include playing with a feather wand, rolling around in catnip and spending a lot of time perched on the highest shelf of a cat scratching post looking out the window.

I am 1yr old named Skittles who loves toy wands and laser pointers. I am very affectionate and will follow you around the house chatting away to let you know when I want more attention. I use my litter box faithfully and I love canned food. I’m not crazy about other cats and I prefer to stay indoors.

Lives

local stories...local people...local pets

By Jocelyn Wady It’s a big job, operating the only animal shelter in a bustling urban center of nearly a million people. Thousands of animals arrive at the Edmonton Humane Society every year, and the physical and intangible resources required to care for them are substantial. Operating as a charitable organization makes it doubly difficult, relying on the generosity of our incredible donors to carry out our mission. But the people who work in animal welfare and the ones who support us are all united to one end: saving animal lives. It is this goal that drives the staff of the Edmonton Humane Society: from the maintenance crew and animal protection officers, to the fund development team and behaviour specialists. Here in the communications department, I have an important role to play, too, bringing our stories into the public square, speaking on behalf of animals, and giving recognition to those whose careers are dedicated to helping them. Fortunately, improvements in thoughts, processes, and ideas toward animal welfare have affected real positive change in the new millennium. “When I first started volunteering at animal shelters in the 1990s prior to veterinary school, resources were very limited in shelters and animals were not as lucky,” says Dr. Anthea Smith, Director of Animal Health. “We are able to do so much more for the animals in our care compared to when I first started.” Progress is great, but how is it actually measured? Animal rescue agencies use the Live Release Rate to track success over months and years. The LRR is statistical formula which, fundamentally, reflects the percentage of animals a shelter is able to save. In the past year, the EHS focused on a lofty target to indicate success. “We set ourselves a goal of reaching 90% and we are meeting and often exceeding this,” explains Jeffrey Friend, Team Lead of the Behaviour Department. “This is fantastic for our shelter demographics.” Animals come to the EHS as strays, transfers from other agencies, or owner-surrenders. Many animals arrive with behaviour issues, and many are relinquished by owners due to behaviour concerns. This reality makes rehabilitation a crucial part of shelter success. Indeed, advancements in behaviour management have helped the EHS reach that impressive 90% target. When an animal arrives at the shelter, information is collected from a variety of sources to build a holistic animal profile. The animal’s history, health, and temperament are investigated to create the best care plan for the animal. The approach to case management has expanded to integrate additional resources and methods of rehabilitation; this has been a key component of EHS’ success to date. Recognizing that animal behaviour can degrade in a shelter environment due to stress or energy levels, EHS’ medical and behaviour teams strive to move animals out of the shelter as quickly as possible. Volunteers who show an interest and aptitude in animal behaviour are trained to assist behaviour staff, greatly increasing the number of animals that can be helped in a reduced time frame. local stories...local people...local pets

Collaboration with other rescue groups and placement in foster care are two avenues that help animals thrive in an alternate setting, while freeing up room in the shelter to accommodate more animals. In house, administrative staff often accept canine visitors into offices as a reprieve from the kennel space. In addition to being walked by volunteers, daily playgroups provide exercise to shelter dogs and an outlet for frustration. Dr. Smith is pleased with the shelter’s unprecedented success: “The vast majority of animals that come to the EHS leave into a great home with a happy ending,” she says. “There are of course those cases where an animal should not be rehomed due to aggression or untreatable health concerns.” Sadly, humane euthanasia is a difficult reality for most animal shelters. The EHS does not euthanize animals for reasons of time or space – physically and mentally healthy animals remain at the shelter as long as it takes to get them adopted. When animals pose a danger to the community, however, tough decisions must be made. “For some animals, the risks are too high for them to be rehomed responsibly,” explains Jeffrey. One tool EHS behaviourists use for assessing dogs upon intake is the Dog Temperament Assessment 5 (DTA-5). The DTA-5 is a temperament test that was developed by Dr. Rebecca Ledger, a prominent behaviourist and animal welfare scientist. The DTA5 incorporates a comprehensive owner personality assessment in addition to evaluations conducted with the dog in different scenarios. The test tells us what we can expect from the dog in moderately stressful situations, which informs us in trying to find the best match for a home. In addition to improvements in case management, other changes have helped meet the target live release rate. Innovative programs like Cattitude Cats and Barn Buddies have provided alternate avenues for animals with challenging behaviours. Cattitude Cats is an adoption program for cats who cannot be placed on the adoption floor for reasons like inter-cat aggression, and Barn Buddies offers a similar opportunity for cats who have trouble adapting to indoor life. The Prevent Another Litter Subsidy (PALS) program is yet another initiative that contributes to EHS’ success by offering inexpensive spay/neuter surgeries to qualified individuals. Managing pet overpopulation is fundamental to saving animal lives; developments in our humane education programs also help educate the public about adoption and responsible pet ownership. Providing owners with resources to manage their pet’s behaviour translates to fewer animals being surrender to the shelter. For animals in the shelter, advances in veterinary medicine increase the proportion of animals that can be helped medically whether through stricter disease management or specialized treatment options. Myriad strategies work in tandem to achieve the success the Edmonton Humane Society enjoys today. The animal welfare landscape is ever-changing, and the EHS prides itself on its progressive, proactive approach to animal care. In the future, with your help, we will continue to strive to save as many animal lives as possible. prm

My name is Zena and I was rescued as a feral kitten a few months ago. I take a little while to warm up to people but once I know you are okay I will be a devoted companion who will love nothing more than to cuddle up close! I am 6mths old and good with other cats & dogs.

Hello out there, I’m Yoda! I’m an 80lb fun-loving kinda guy who wants to please my people. I’m pretty smart so training me is fairly easy, especially if you have treats! I am also a Husky X and can be a bit of an escape artist, so a secure yard would be good for me.

Hello ladies, my name is Handsome... I mean Hugo! I’m a real ladies man. I ended up unclaimed at a pound with a big abscess on my face, but I’m good as new now. I’m just 1.5yrs old but I’m over that pesky kitten phase. If you’re looking for a laid back kinda guy, I’m your man!

wHAT’S NEW IN THE COMIC world

O

n January 28, 2015, a new comic book starring a ragtag group of Animal Control Officers is available at comic book shops nationwide. CREATURE COPS: SPECIAL VARMINT UNIT is a three-issue miniseries in which ACO’s face gene-spliced creatures in their daily jobs. The comic is being released by IDW, a comic book publisher of popular properties such as TRANSFORMERS, GI JOE, MY LITTLE PONY, and TMNT. “In this world, gene-spliced animals are commonplace, so instead of dealing with dogs or the occasional alligator, these officers are facing Horned Mastiffs and gigantic gator-snakes,” said writer Rob Anderson. “Then, the officers discover a nest of what looks like mythological griffins and things really start to get out of control.” The miniseries tells the story of burned-out animal cop Al Kaminski, as he investigates a death cult with ties to a case from his past. But, in the style of a police ensemble drama, it 18

also follows all the officers of the precinct, in cases ranging from fighting rings to hoarding. The inspiration for casting ACO’s as the heroes of this sci-fi infused drama came to Anderson while he was volunteering at a Virginia animal shelter a number of years ago. Anderson previously wrote a comic book miniseries, REX, ZOMBIE KILLER. You can find Creature Cops: Special Varmit Unit by searching www.comicshoplocator.com. The publication will also be available digitally for any tablet via the popular ComiXoloy app. For more information on this mythical adventure visit: CreatureCops.co local stories...local people...local pets

I’m Emma. I am 2.5yrs old and I love to play with my doggy friends and squeaky toys. I get along with dogs of all sizes but sometimes I don’t realize how big I am (80-90lbs). I like to cuddle, I am calm in the house, and I’m very bright. An active home with lots to do would be perfect for me.

Howdy, I’m Miss Clementine. I’m nearly 1yr old and now that my kittens have all found homes, it’s my turn. I love to eat whatever I’m given & I adore being petted. I prefer to sit on my own but I like to stick close by‌ sometimes I even sneak in bed when my foster siblings aren’t looking!

Hello‌ I’m a shy & calm 2yr old Boxer X named Daisy. I am nervous in new environments, and when meeting new people, so please introduce me slowly & safely. I like to share my food and treats and I already know many basic commands; I’m a treat motivated girl!

My name is Toby, and I know what you’re thinking‌ “poor thing, he’s so old, he might not be around too long‌â€? but let me tell you, I’m as healthy and happy as they come! I may be around 13yrs old but I’m a kitten at heart - and you don’t even need to litter train me. I’m a laid back and mellow fellow who gets along with everyone. I love to give affection and I purr constantly so you’ll know I’m a happy boy. I have a lot of years left in me, so please don’t let my age hinder your consideration of adopting me. I am great with kids and other animals but I do chase cats (I am still a puppy after all!). I am already kennel & house trained and I LOVE my people… but I should mention that I can be a bit if a hoarder. I like to borrow things (like remotes) from around the house and take them to my kennel. I don’t chew or destroy the items... I just like to collect them!

My name is Twilight and these are my brothers Moonshine and Eclipse. We are a handsome bunch that was born last October. I am a very affectionate boy who loves to get attention and lives for playtime! Moonshine can be a little timid still, life has been so full of change, but once you pick him up he’s a happy little guy. Eclipse has a stunning black coat and all the ladies adore him! We are all looking for loving forever homes. Please consider coming to meet us, I promise you won’t regret it.

Hi there, my name is Liv. I am a very beautiful 1yr old beauty that was rescued with three 2 day old kittens. They have been adopted and now it’s just me. I am extremely affectionate, in fact I often purr nonstop. I love people and I’m the perfect mix of cuddly and playful. Please don’t forget to ask about me! 22

Nellie here. I am a sweet, happy, & energetic kitten who was born last August. I love to play with toys and climb up, down & all around my cat tree. I like to greet you when you come home but I’m not the cuddliest of kittens. I am very gentle & very rarely use my claws while playing.

I’m a handsome young cat named Sawyer, just look at these stripes! I love to play, but I can be a little rough. I don’t mean to hurt anyone, I just haven’t really been taught differently. I need a patient owner and a structured lifestyle to help me through my teens and teach me to be the best cat I can be. local stories...local people...local pets

My name is Molly and I am an 85lb, 1.5yr old, Saint Bernard/Akita X. I am a giant cuddle bug. I love walks but I am not a high energy gal. I am good with other dogs, cats & kids. I do chase cats but I am only playing, I would never hurt them. I need a home with canine company or where someone is home a lot.

My name is Jack Frost and I’m a sweet, low energy, guy who has a lot of love left to give. Although I’ve clearly had a very rough life, I have a heart of gold. I like to cuddle on the couch with my people, and follow them around the house. I am good with cats and calm dogs. I’m a very gentle and sweet senior Beagle.

I am Han Solo. I came with my sister, Princess Leia, and we are just 2mths old. I would love an active home… and maybe someone who enjoys agility training? I am a very sweet pup that likes to cuddle but I’m also full of play. They say I am an Aussie/Pitty X and that everyone who meets me falls in love with my personality.

I’m a cute little thing (35lbs) named Christy May. They think I may be a Corgi/Pitty/ Sheba Inu X. I’m very smart and I become very attached. I am still a little wary of people but I absolutely love to play with my foster sibling. I need a little bit of work on my house and company manners, but I’m learning quickly.

Education NOT Euthanization W By Tanisha Degenhardt

e are a new and upcoming non-profit group in Edmonton that is opening the minds of pet owners that find themselves at a loss with the behaviour of their dogs. Education Not Euthanization (ENE) believes that education is the key to success of keeping dogs out of shelters.

We reach dog owners worldwide through social media by sending out educational pictures with tips and information. Our photos are easier and faster to read than articles or blogs and they are easier for readers to share with their friends. All of our educational photos and posters are vet approved so we do not send out the wrong message. Millions of dogs are euthanized annually in shelters North America wide. Most of these dogs are owner surrenders or strays. We believe that educating dog owners will play a key part in lessening the amount of dogs relinquished by their owners and subsequently admitted to shelters. If we can show dog owners how to help their dogs instead of surrendering them, it will also help to make an impact in the shelter world too. We are still very much in our infancy in Edmonton but have plans to go into schools and hold educational workshops with children showing 24

them how to properly interact with dogs in an effort to lesson the amount of dog bites. We also plan to work with local shelters to host “Read With A Shelter Dog” events meant to help motivate children to read, while helping to give attention and love to dogs without a home. ENE also plans to have children’s activity books featuring bully breeds so that the next generation of dog lovers may come to know them as kind companion pets. ENE is Edmonton based. Our organization is comprised of mothers, daughters, company owners, dog trainers, vet techs, and advocates. We are volunteers and everyday people who believe that through education and working together towards a common goal we will help to positively change laws and ideas surrounding stereotypical labeling of certain breeds. We also partner with rescues and organizations North America wide to unite the dog community and help everyone work together. Adding a dog into your family as a companion pet should make everyone’s lives happy and fun and we’re working hard to make it just that! peanut butter banana pupcakes DogTreatRecipes.org

Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth – I used natural smooth) 1 large egg 3/4 cup milk 1 banana 3 tablespoons oil 1/4 cup honey local stories...local people...local pets

Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and either line a muffin tin with paper cups or lightly spray it with oil. 2. Mix together all of the dry ingredients and set the bowl aside. 3. Using a food processor, blend the peanut butter, egg, milk, banana, honey and oil until smooth and well blended. 4. Using a large spoon or rubber spatula, fold the wet ingredients into the dry. Note: Don’t go crazy here, you just want the dry ingredients to be incorporated with the wet ones. The resulting mixture will be somewhere between a batter and a really sticky dough. 5. Spoon the mixture into the muffin pan, filling each cup to about 3/4 of the way full. 6. Bake for 12-14 minutes if making mini muffins and 18-20 minutes for regular-sized. Store these in an airtight container (hence the aforementioned ziploc baggy) at room temperature and they’ll keep for about a week. pet rescue magazine February/March 2015

GREDDA

essentially Gredda was a cheerful dog that was extremely underweight and couldn’t use her back legs. SCARS takes each and every injury case seriously and we wanted to ensure we weren’t prolonging Gredda’s suffering in any way. So Gredda made a second road trip to meet another veterinarian. More x-rays and a few bags of treats later it was agreed by a second vet that Gredda was indeed happy and healthy minus two functioning back legs. We were donated a wheel chair and when we placed her in it, she literally took off running. She was so happy to be mobile, which only further demonstrated her amazing personality and strength of character. I took Gredda home to foster her shortly after her Global TV debut on November 26. It took about a week for us to notice that, due to the paralysis, her back legs not only got in the way, they caused her to get stuck on things. It was also very difficult getting her in and out of the wheel chair. After consultation with her vet, we determined for Gredda to be comfortable and mobile, it was best to remove her back legs.

By Terra MacLean

G

redda came to SCARS the same way we get many dogs. We received a phone call about an injured dog that needed help. It was quickly discovered Gredda was more than injured, her emaciated state and paralyzed condition were a horror. Yet Gredda was a happy, sweet, dog that readily approached people dragging both her back legs. She was found by our friends at the Canine Action Project (CAP) in mid-November. CAPs focuses on community outreach through education and spay/neuter programs. They partner with animal rescues like SCARS when they come across dogs like Gredda that are in need of veterinary care and rehoming. Gredda was rushed to the closest veterinary clinic where it was confirmed that she had previously suffered a severe trauma, likely hit by a car. The impact broke her back, leaving her paralyzed. The healing to the injury was at least 2.5 months old. That meant Gredda had endured the pain of the injury while living outdoors with very little food and shelter, all the while dragging her back legs. The strength of animals—both physically and spiritually—never ceases to amaze us. The horrors some of them endure before they come into care is beyond comprehension. Sadly, we know that many do not make it into our care and there is no one to tell their stories. In a way, Gredda symbolizes the suffering of every abandoned pet in Alberta. She is one of thousands of pets that need help. Because she was eventually discovered by a caring volunteer, she is one of the lucky ones. Sadly, it was determined there was no surgery that could repair Gredda’s injuries. Miraculously she maintained the ability to potty (bowel and bladder control) which meant 26

February/March 2015

This decision was not made lightly, but within a week of the surgery it was obvious it was the right choice. The surgery took place the week of December 8 and Gredda is doing great. She is very mobile around the house, including playfully chasing the cats, and she no longer gets stuck when trying to maneuver herself. She is also much more manageable to get in and out of her wheel chair and walking harness. I decided to foster Gredda and went into it thinking how much extra work a two legged dog might be, but now I’m convinced that who ever adopts Gredda will be lucky to have her. I have a kennel at my acreage where I foster many SCARS dogs. I also have many dogs of my own. I am NOT a morning person, I slowly drag my behind out of bed, open the door and my pack of beasts stroll outside, almost as lazy as me. Then I drag myself to the kennels and tell all the dogs not to talk to me until my second cup of coffee. But with Gredda it’s not so easy, I still drag my sorry behind out of bed, but I immediately get dressed and get her in her chair and navigate the snow bank to the driveway and we are off. Our morning stroll under way, she is happy and lively and LOVES to talk, regardless of my coffee intake. I practically have to force her to come back home, as I don’t want her to get too tired. But coincidentally enough I’m now wide awake and functioning, weird how little things make a difference in your life. Gredda is an amazing dog, and caring for her is truly only a little “extra” work. She is one of the happiest dogs I have ever seen and her spirit and how she embraces life is magical. Gredda works all kinds of magic if she can make me a morning person. local stories...local people...local pets

Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team

My name is Cally… but it should have been Chatty Cathy! I am an independent gal who likes things in small doses and would be great for someone who wants a kitty who likes to snuggle from time to time but also does well on her own. I am okay with other submissive pets but would be best as your one & only.

Everyone says I’m a big teddy bear. My name is Benny and I am a very sweet boy. I love to roll over for belly rubs and I will literally melt into your arms for affection. Although large, I am also very submissive. I need a family that can provide a calm environment who loves snuggling up on the couch.

Hey there! I am a very handsome, outgoing, friendly and loving boy named Kush. I like all people and adore children. Belly rubs and playing are my favorite things. I do well with other dogs and cats but I definitely like to be the boss of the house. I also like to wrestle and sometimes I just snuggle with the dogs.

I have suffered in my previous life so I’m a little shy at first but once I get to know you I am very loving, talkative and sweet. My name is Ringo and I will melt your heart with my gentle nature. I would do well with submissive cats & dogs but no young children please I think they would be too scary!

Hello, I am Eden. I am a beautiful adult corn snake who absolutely loves attention from my human companions. I am very tame and enjoy being handled; I’d make a wonderful friend for a first-time snake owner. We can live up to 20yrs and grow 3-4’ in length, so I’ll need a large terrarium to hang out in.

Potty Training Your Ferret By Derrick Anderson

F

errets are lovable pets that are somewhat low maintenance. These pets become much more low maintenance if they are trained early on in their lives. Ferrets can be trained to do basic things. One of these is teaching them to use a litter box. Ferrets are not as apt to use a litter box as cats are. Cats will search out their litter box when they need to relieve themselves. Ferrets, on the other hand, will use a box if they see 28

one when they need to relieve themselves. If they don’t see one they nearest corner will probably be the answer to their problem. All of this is after they have been trained. It’s best practice to not attempt to train your pet ferret to use one litter box. Several boxes will be needed in different corners, nooks, and crannies in the area that they will be allowed in. At first, using a smaller space with several boxes will work best. After you have some suclocal stories...local people...local pets

Eat, sleep, play! That’s my mantra. Right now I am living my Collie puppy life to the fullest. I love it best when they give me toys to chew on and treats to eat. I’m still young, so house training is a work in progress but I’m really getting the hang of it. I need a family who’ll teach me to be the best dog I can be! Casper here! I’m crate trained and I also know how to sit, lie down, & come. I love fast walks and car rides. I’m calm and mild mannered, but I do l sneak food off the counter - what dog doesn’t? I’m eager to learn and looking for my own people to help me grow… could you be my people?

I am Kylie. Once in a while, you’ll come across a special girl like me who will just dazzle you. I look like a beautiful black fox - and I’m quick and clever like a fox too! I am picking up on commands and I settle into my crate well. I love to go for walks and play but for a puppy I am pretty laid back.

To make it happen you will need a lot of patience and understanding. Some days will be better than others and it will be a gradual process. Take small steps and expect accidents or times when it seems like your pet is purposely not using the box. Relax. He’s just being a ferret! prm
