I am CeCe, and I can be shy but I am still very loveable. I was saved from euthanasia because my owners were moving and couldn’t take me along. I love neck scratches and I am quiet and very clean. Could you please give me a second chance in a loving furrever home? I promise you won’t have any regrets!!!
My name is Maxi and I am a beautiful 6yr old girl. I have been through a lot the last few months with my owner passing away and suddenly being in a new place. I have become shy and unsure of who to trust, but I am still very affectionate with those who have taken time with me for lots of TLC. Don’t pass me by, I promise to be a wonderful companion.
I am a striking dark brown tabby girl named Pakipsee. I am about 4yrs old and my brother and I were found abandoned under a trailer. My brother has since been adopted leaving me alone and unsure of my future. I am very clean & quiet but I need extra love & patience to settle in. I get along well with other cats.

I am Sweet Georgia Brown and I try hard to please my people. I have energy to burn but I’m happy to cuddle up at your feet. I am very clever and have been learning my basic commands quickly. I really don’t care for unruly dogs and would ideally do best in a home with no kids or other pets. My name is Cyan and I came from Ontario with my 8 babies. I am about 3yrs old and a very slender 40lbs. I am very polite, but I still have some basic commands that I need to learn. I really like kids, other dogs, and even those small fuzzy things called cats. I am pretty quiet most of the time, but if you talk to me I’ll just have to answer you back, I love to talk!
CAUTION They call me Little Miss Mia and I am a high energy kind a gal. I love people but I do not like other furry creatures. I would do best in a home without other pets that would be willing to continue my training. I am available through the Manageable Dog Program at pitbullsforlife.com

Berkeley’s Place ... it’s where you’ll find the gift of giving to support our local animal rescues By Lillian Courtney
B
eing an avid animal lover and advocate for neglected and abused animals, I noticed a growing trend on many of the rescue webpages being a continual request for supplies and funding to keep up with the growing problem of animals in crisis. In May 2014, I put out a request to the community of Terwillager Towne for donations of gently used kennels, collars, leashes, blankets etc. The response was overwhelming and I was able to distribute donations to ten local rescues. From this project was born a Facebook page called Berkeley’s Place in honor of a special needs rescue dog that changed my life, Berkeley.
Part of our campaign to help rescues includes the formation of an account called Berkeley’s Place Foundation with our partner Terwillager Veterinary Clinic. A veterinary sponsorship form can be downloaded from our website where individuals or businesses can sponsor a service for a rescue animal. By offsetting some of the basic costs of care, rescue organizations will be able to assist more animals.
Berkeley’s Place is a Non-Profit Foundation under the Societies Act in the Province of Alberta dedicated to providing the opportunity for the best possible life to all companion animals and we are committed to supporting the guardians entrusted with their care. Many people are unaware of the many organizations that are devoted to helping animals in need or have misconceptions about rescue animals. Through education and awareness, we hope to bridge this gap.
We have partnered with the Alberta Helping Animals Society to assist companion animals of vulnerable people in our city. We have discovered that the major problem facing the homeless is finding housing or shelters that will allow pets, forcing many to stay on the streets rather than leave their pets behind. Most homeless shelters do not have the resources in place to help companion animals. Many fear if they cannot provide an address, their pets will not be returned to them if they take advantage of foster programs or shelter initiatives for their pets.
When you think of the number of animals needing help, what many fail to realize is that often times they need medical attention first and foremost. Rescues must have the resources to cover food, medical care, supplies etc. Sometimes animals are left behind because of a lack or limited resources to care for those intakes. Berkeley’s Place works hard to network with as many organizations as we can to bring awareness to the plight of rescue, including holding donation drives for food and other needed supplies so that badly needed funds can be allocated to critical care medical needs for the animals rescues are saving. Our partners include Pet Planet Riverbend Square, Pet Valu Windermere and Petland. 8

We also offer a pet honoring ceremony each month for companions that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
We have created Earth Angel Helpersacks, which will contain warm socks, gloves, a toque, packets of hot chocolate, a leash, collar, dry and wet canine or feline food, bowls, bottled water and some treats or biscuits. Beagle Paws Animal Rescue My name is Jackson and I don’t mean to brag, but I am definitely the cutest little 8yr old Puggle I have ever met! You would never guess my age because I still have all the energy and enthusiasm of a much younger guy. I like cats enough to be curious and co-exist peacefully with them. I do fine with other small dogs, but those big busy ones scare me half to death! My foster family is the greatest and I love to please them. I can also “sit”, “paw”, “lie down” and lots of other things to prove my smarts. I am so sweet and goofy, and all I really want is to be with my people. My foster mom says I need loving, but firm, boundaries so that I know what’s expected of me. Like all dogs, I wasn’t just born knowing the rules, you know!!! Can’t wait to meet you!

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society
Hey, how are ya doing? I am Augustus. Quite a looker, right? I seem to be an incredibly handsome Husky/St. Bernard X. I have been great with all of the dogs I have met, even when they don’t seem to like me! I don’t seem too playful with them but I do enjoy the companionship.

Good day, my name is Meow Meow. I figure I can call you all friends since I’ve been with SCARS for sooooo long. Not to be rude but seriously, what’s going on here? I’m such a precious girl and no one has ever even asked about me – it sure doesn’t do much for a gal’s self-esteem.
Hey, Trotsky’s the name, who doesn’t like the short guy? I think I may have some Corgi or Bassett in me, but don’t let this cute face and my size trick you. I need a very active & experienced home. Why? Cause I’m a very SMART guy with a LOT of energy. I like dogs, but cats… not so much.
Hi world! Look at me!!! I am Bettice, a 10mth old female Shepherd X. I have tons of energy (TONS & TONS) and I’m super smart. My foster mom keeps saying I need a job which sounds GREAT, GREAT, GREAT to me. Do you have a job for me? Can you teach me lots of stuff?
Hello out there! My name is Huxley. I am 4-5yrs old and generally a very laid back fellow. I’m quite gentle with people and other dogs, but I do NOT care for cats. This is not negotiable. I have been very busy learning about leashes and how the food on the counter is not for me.
Hey people folk, my name is Bart! I have been with SCARS a very long time but, strangely, I have never been adopted. It truly leaves everyone around here stumped. I love other dogs and I adore hanging out with children, but I do need work on my cat skills. I sure hope I get my Second Chance very soon.
Hi there, my name is Tinx. I came to SCARS with my sister and we were very shy. We have been adjusting well though and I am even starting to see the appeal of this whole living with a family and getting regular meals thing. Life is swell, all I need is someone to share it with.

My name is Colleen and I came to SCARS in a strange but lucky way. I was rescued by mechanics who found me under the hood of a car they were working on. Thank goodness they noticed me. I imagine they were as startled to discover me, a tiny 6wk old kitten, as I was to see them!
Howdy, Justice here. I am a 6yr old Terrier X with awesome traits to match my girlish good looks. I am bright, athletic, smart, loving, astute, entertaining, intelligent, playful, clever… and I love a good time! I adore kids, and I am good with cats & other dogs. I am also crate trained and listen very well.
Leo here. I am mature in years but still very happy to play a game of fetch. I am okay off leash, good on leash, crate & house trained, and I love car rides. I’m not really a big fan of doing ‘tricks’, and children overwhelm me, but I am a fantastic companion and I would be happy sharing my home with a female dog.
I’m Taffy and I have been with SCARS for some time. There is nothing wrong with me, I am truly a lovely girl. I am great with other dogs and already house & crate trained. I am also good on leash, and quite mellow, but I don’t care too much for the felines. I can’t wait to meet you!

Adorado’s Legacy
I am a bay filly who was born on May 17, 2014. My name is Deva and I was purchased by a meat buyer at a September 2014 auction, before being saved by Adorado’s Legacy. I don’t know why no one wanted me, as I am told that I am very pretty, and smart - plus I was already AQHA registered! My registered name is Lenas Flashy Cue Bar, and my younger brother’s formal name is Peppys Skip Otoe. My dad (sire) is Peppy Kilocat, but my dam’s name is Lenas San Lou. A vet came to check me out, and I do have a small hernia that requires surgery, but once that is done, I will be absolutely perfect.
Note: Adorado’s Legacy horses are not those seized by authorties for neglect. The horses and foals are actually puchased by Adorado’s Legacy at auction to rescue them from being slaughtered. Our horses and foals are adopted under a contract meant to keep them safe for life. If you are interested in adopting one of their babies please call Tracy at 780 433-4333 and/or go to: AdoradosLegacy.com for more information.

Meika’s Birdhouse Rescue My name is Arthur and I am an Orange Winged Amazon Parrot. I have spent a lot of time alone and never truly learned to completely trust people. I can’t fly so I like to perch on the top of my cage and look out the window or watch TV. I quite like it when people talk or sing to me, occasionally I will even join in! I also enjoy having my head scratched once in a while. I would love to find a quiet & loving home that understands that I am happy not to be handled.
Hi, my name is Twilight, I am one of two female Budgies here looking for homes. I am still pretty young, they think I am around 1yr old. I am currently learning to stand on people’s fingers… so far I only like to do it if someone gives me a treat afterwards – but I’m warming up to the idea! Perhaps you have some treats for me?
We are Mom and Dad Lovebird. We are very devoted to each other and previously had three babies. The kids are gone now and we are looking for a home that we can call our own. We have never really learned to enjoy being handled but we come out to fly around and return to our cage on our own.

Northern Alberta Society For Animal Protection I’m an older girl named Keiki and change really scares me but I have settled in ok. I will need to be the only animal in my new home, but that just means you can spoil me silly! I like to completely cover myself under a fuzzy blanket. It’s very cozy. I’m quite patient but if I really don’t like something I’ll let you know… I’m a good communicator. I’m pretty laid back and gentle. I went to the vet to make sure I’m healthy for a new family and I am ready to go. I did have a full body shave because of heavy matting but I’m ok with the ‘lion’ look for a little while. I’m also a tad overweight but I’m working on it. Please consider me for adoption, you won’t regret it!
My name is Gemma and I was surrendered to the county pound. I am a very sweet, well trained & well-mannered girl. I love belly rubs and getting brushed. I am really good with young children, other dogs and cats. I was abused before my original family found me, so I can be defensive but since I have been with NASAP I have remained a very sweet and gentle dog. No aggression or fear has been seen in me when meeting new people, but it’s something to keep in mind for my forever home.
I am a very sweet, playful & affectionate girl named Gremlin. I am curious but respectful of cats. I love to play but sometimes I forget my size & strength. I mean no harm and simple correction has been effective. I stick my head out the window on car rides no matter the weather, and I love to play fetch & tug-o-war.

Hello my friends, my name is Fodol. I am a very affectionate sweetheart who likes to cuddle up close. I love being with people and I am okay with dogs. I also REALLY enjoy chasing balls with or without bells or rattles inside. If you roll the ball I will play for hours. I can’t wait to play with you!
I’m a very talkative & friendly boy named Cosmo. I’m shy in new situations but, given a little time, I adjust quickly. I’m a little chubby but I’m now on a weight reduction diet and I love to play and run around so it won’t take long to slim down. I don’t mind other cats but I’m not too keen on the canines.
I’m a 1yr old cuddler named Skittles. I love indoor living and playing with toy wands & laser pointers. I am very affectionate and will follow you around telling you all sorts of stories to keep your attention. I’m not crazy about other cats but I use my litterbox faithfully and I love canned food, yes it is my favorite yummy food!

Hello, my name is Mei Ling and I’m looking to find my new forever family. I’m a good little girl who enjoys cuddles and lots of love. I don’t mind other dogs but I’m not fond of sharing so I would prefer to be the only dog in my new family. I’m available for adoption at the senior rate of $100.
My name is Finn. I’m a friendly 3yr old with an outgoing and playful personality. I like to play with toy mice and feathers on strings. I also love to get really close to my people. Sitting on a kitchen chair is the best place for me to check out all the action! I get along fine with friendly cats and dogs.
My name is Phoebe and I am the mother of six 2wk old kittens. I’m very affectionate and I love to have my head scratched. I also enjoy giving head butts and being the center of attention. I am young, healthy, and quite active. I would love a home where I could have lots of attention and playtime.

EHS and the
Rise of Social Enterprise By Travis Grant
S
ocial enterprise – it’s a term that’s not always familiar to people but one that’s increasingly present in the non-profit sector. Fundamentally, social enterprise serves a singular purpose: improving stakeholder and environmental well-being by way of a sustainable revenue model that enables program and service delivery directly related to an organization’s mission and vision. At the Edmonton Humane Society, social enterprise activities fall under the areas of training, humane education, fund development, and various points of retail throughout the shelter; and all of it operates in unison with and in support of the core shelter model of admissions and adoptions. The overarching goal of EHS’ social enterprise activities is to help pets and their people enjoy lasting and successful relationships through a continuum of service and support. It’s a model that marks a relatively new paradigm in animal sheltering. I first visited the Edmonton Humane Society in the summer of 1986. My parents had recently divorced and somewhere in all that confusion the decision was made to sur16

render Freckles, the long haired Chihuahua who had been our family pet for the better part of 10 years. I don’t recall there being any fanfare or protest from my parents regarding the decision. In those days, the prevailing psychology seemed to be that pets were nice to have around until they were an inconvenience. Generally speaking, people didn’t opt to access services that helped them be successful with their pets, even in times of stress or crisis. Back then the shelter was located on an industrial corner of the Yellowhead Trail. It was an old building, poorly suited to the task of animal intake and herd management. And there were very few additional services available to pet owners. My seven-year-old self remembers it as a sad place – constrictive, concrete, and dour. What lit the experience were the staff members and volunteers who sincerely loved the animals in their care. As under-resourced as it was, the old shelter was still a source of tremendous good. Having experienced what the shelter was, I’m inspired by the profound level of community service the Edmonton local stories...local people...local pets
Humane Society offers today. The EHS is not just a safe place to surrender or adopt a pet. It’s a robust community organization that recognizes pet owners of all ages – both current and perhaps even latent – who often access our services and support EHS in various ways. I see it daily. In Bingo’s pet store – the shelter’s very own pet supply boutique – new adopters euphorically pick out toys, beds, and food to make their newly adopted companions comfortable on the first night in their new homes. Adopters are unshakeably proud and the mood is wonderfully infectious. You see it at the Muddy Paws dog wash, too. It’s is a great place to clean up after an exhilaratingly filthy adventure in one of the city’s many dog parks. This unique community resource fills a need, giving pet owners an alternative to the often messy and unpleasant experience of having one’s house bedraggled with whatever pets shake off after the average outdoor muck-about. Thanks to the wonderful and informative programming offered by our Canine Enrichment Centre (CEC), the shelter has seen a reduction in the number of animals returned due to behaviour issues. Our classes offer enrichment, socialization, and measured instruction that helps puppies and dogs become first-rate canine citizens. What’s more, people who are afforded opportunities to work with their dogs past destructive, inconveniencing, or just plain old bad manners get to reach milestones together; and the reward of these mutual achievements strengthen and affirm people’s commitment to their pets. The sum of these experiences is a greater number of life-long success stories; and how great it is. local stories...local people...local pets
Similar success stories play out every day in Central Bark – EHS’ members-only dog park – and in our doggy daycare. Every day, as I come to and from work, I drive past the park and see, first-hand, groups of dedicated pet owners routinely spending time outside with their dogs, providing them with the exercise and stimulation that enriches their lives. And throughout the course of the day, I often pass by the shelter daycare and see 40 or so dogs playing, running, and resting. The common denominators are happiness and contentment. I need only describe it as inspiring love in action. And all of it affirms the work we do. Another inspiring part of the EHS’ social enterprise efforts is the number children and adults accessing our humane educational programing. They attend summer camps, pet first aid courses, educational birthday parties, presentations on animal welfare, and more. Reaching minds, especially young ones, powerfully spreads humane ideals across our collective consciousness, for the benefit of companion animals reliant on our advocacy. It’s a growing mode of being, born out of ideas that have been championed by our organization for more than a century. The effect is palpable. In a powerfully connected way, proceeds from all of these services designed to help pets and their owners go back into the shelter, to help care for the thousands of animals who come through the EHS’ doors each and every year. Through the community’s support of these services, heartwrenching stories can have successful endings. And through social enterprise, today’s success seeds tomorrows. prm

Hi we are the “K” bunch 4 girls and 3 boys and we are 4wks old. As you can see we are cute as buttons and will be ready for adoption in a few weeks. Now don’t let that you stop you from showing interest in us because in 2 weeks we will be available for pre-adoption. If you need to know more about us please contact LCL.
Hi there, I am handsome Ashton. I am a about 4yrs old and a purebred Ragdoll. Yes, I know I look like a lion right now because I was shaved due to a matted coat. I need a home that will brush me everyday. I love to cuddle once I know I can trust you. However, I would rather keep my paws on the ground because beng carried is very scary to me. I am good with other cats but I don’t know about dogs I have not had the opportunity to meet any close up. I need a quiet home without young children.
Hello there, my name is Faucet and I am about 4yrs old. I came in with Ashton and I too am a purebred Ragdoll. We are good buddies! I am hearing impaired but I’m very good at knowing you are around. I love cuddles but being off the ground is for birds. I am good with cats, but can’t say I’ve been close up with dogs although I do have a gentle nature. I am still learning to trust and I think being in my very own home will help me lots in that regard. I do need a quiet forever home that does not have young children running around.
Hi there, we are Den-nis and Dexter. We are brothers and about 1yrs old. We hope to find our forever home together. I’m Dennis and the ambassador of the two of us because I love, love, love to be with my human. I will help with vacumming, dishes, sweeping or whatever it is you are doing I’m right along side with you. My favorite pass time is riding on my foster mom’s shoulder and snuggling into her ear. Dexter likes to sit and watch all the goings on but is always there ready for a little lovin’ anytime you are ready to dish it out. We have been in care for quite some time and have watched other cats come and go. There is no reason why we should not have a wonderful home of our own. Please give us a chance... we are amazing!

Tails From Rescue.... Little Cats Lost
B
uster was rescued from a breeding mill along with 17 other cats. He is thought to be about 13 years old. On examination at the veterinary clinic, Buster was found to be suffering from an upper respiratory virus, an infection in his mouth caused by tooth decay and neglect, and he was non-weight bearing on one of his back legs. A x-ray later confirmed the suspicion that poor Buster, on top of everything else, was dealing with the pain of a broken hip. Due to his condition he was hospitalized, the matted hair that covered his back was shaved off and then he was placed on IV fluids and medications. That was his condition in a nutshell. At the time of writing this, I’d been caring for Buster for a week and I can tell you he melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes. The cat that came into my care seemed no longer interested in living he had shut down. He would lay motionless and unresponsive. It was an agonizing time watching this boy day after day. I wondered whether he would ever live to know that so many people were wishing him well on the road to recovery. That was two months ago, now I see sparks of life where there was no life, and I know that given time he will stop retracting from my touch and accept my hand as kind and loving. God knows what he has been through in his life. Before rescue, reports were he was housed alone in a dark, dungeon like room with only a dirt floor and shavings to sleep on. His fears today are warranted. Little Cats Lost intakes many cats, the majority never knowing a gentle hand until they come into care, but they never cease to amaze us with their ability to forgive the transgressions of humans. I can see this same forgiveness emerging in this pitiful little man, even if I do have to give him the medications he would clearly rather not have if he were given the choice. local stories...local people...local pets
Buster after two months in care
Regarding Buster’s hip, unfortunately there was no surgery recommended due to the proximity of his sciatic nerve and the dangers associated with surgery in that area. It’s now up to his body to heal itself and this has meant a prolonged stretch of kennel rest. He has tolerated his rest extremely well and we are confident that when Buster goes for his xray in the coming weeks we will find his fracture is healing well. Our goal is to provide Buster with a life that is free of pain and suffering and that goes for both his physical and mental wellbeing. We want to nurture him along so he has every chance at finding his very own loving home. His recovery will be a long road that is for sure, but he is pulling out of his depression and is now talking, if not to me then to the other cats that share his space. It is the responsibility of every potential pet owner that prefers to acquire a pet through a breeder to make sure the breeding parents are well and socially stable, in fact you should insist on meeting them. There will always be people who prefer purebred pets, so if you are one please do your homework so inadequate breeding facilities are not supported and responsible breeders are. Buster’s progress in the weeks, months to come will be posted from time to time on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/LittleCatsLost prm pet rescue magazine April/May 2015

Hello rescue fans! I am a Milk River rescue named Ringo Star. They tell me that I’m a stunning, 6mth old, Husky X who ADORES being pampered. I am house & crate trained, good with kids & other dogs, and okay with cats. One of the resident cats is teaching me how to play appropriately so we are starting to have a lot of fun. I’m so looking forward to finding my forever home so please don’t take too long before you call you to ask about me. I am patiently waiting.
I’m a 4yr old American Staffie X named Meeko. I am good with kids, well mannered, house & crate trained, and I do not bark or chew. I’m also a professional cuddler! I’m not too keen on male dogs, and I do need some work on my walking manners because I think my job is to stay alert and protect you. 22

Don’t mind me I just prefer to be over here while we do this interview. My name is Tippy and I came from a home where there was over 30 cats. I had a pretty bad ear infection but I’m on the mend. I will need some time to come out of my shell as I prefer to hide where I can feel safe. I also avoid eye contact… but I did just start playing with string and I think once my antibiotics are finished I will be feeling a bit more social. I would do best in a calm & quiet home. local stories...local people...local pets
I am a very handsome 3yr old boy named Bash and I have been purring nonstop since I came in. I settled in quick as I am quite friendly, cuddly and laid back. I am wonderful with dogs but I prefer to be with you. I haven’t met any kids but I am pretty gentle so I should be fine. I love everyone and everything.
Hello there, my name is Naomi and I love little humans. I try to bathe them with kisses! I do pretty well at home alone during the day but I do not like the kennel. In fact, I hate it. I missed out on some socialization in my early months so I need to keep working on that but otherwise, my foster mom says I’m the perfect family pet.
Hi there, I am a sweet and stunning 6yr old gal named Rumble. I was surrendered because the young toddlers in my previous home were just too chaotic & stressful for me. I don’t enjoy being carried, but give my neck a scratch and I’m a very happy cat. If you are looking for a quiet & devoted companion please call Zoe’s today!
They call me TomCat. I am a very handsome 3-5yr old who was abandoned near an acreage. Now I am thriving and cuddling up to my foster dad as often as I can! I tend to be pretty quiet. I’m not a big dog fan but I am rather curious about other cats.

Yes‌ I am still here. I have been waiting a long time for my forever home. My name is Duchess and no one can understand why I have not found a home yet. I am a beautiful 3yr old Rotti X who would do best in a home with no small animals. I LOVE to go for walks and nothing makes me happier than a car ride with my people! Hello my name is Zeus. I am an Irish Wolf Hound X around 2yrs old. I am also a Milk River rescue and I like other dogs but some humans still scare me. Everything is new to me, but I am eager to learn how to be good. I need a special home with humans who will be patient but firm with me.
Thank you for supporting pet rescue. My name is Jake and I am a very affectionate and loving boy. I am about 1yr old and Dutchess is my mother. I am a handsome Rotti X who loves to be groomed and cared for. Will you please give me a chance at a real forever home?
I am a 2yr old Great Pyrenees X named Keiko. I am a Milk River rescue who loves most dogs and adores people. I have had surgery on one of my knees and I will soon have surgery on the other. I would like to be home before that so I can have a quiet place for my recovery.
Howdy! I am a ridiculously good looking 2yr old Heeler/ Beagle X named Tracker. I am a sweet boy who loves to follow my nose. I would be best in a home that has no young children or cats as they scare me. I am very smart and I would love to take part in agility or something like it.

I am a Sheltie boy named Fred. My best buddy is Timmy and we are both 9yrs young. He is an American Eskimo/Pom X. We are both well behaved and love walks, but Timmy likes cats and I’m not a fan. I have a friendly & happy personality that will surely charm your socks off. I like my food. A LOT. So I’m working on getting more exercise and losing some “winter” fat. We are an active duo and the perfect little house guests.
I am Oscar. I am a very wise 17yr old cat who found myself homeless at a time in my life when I really should be resting comfortably and enjoying retirement. I am a pretty laid back guy. I really like my toys; in fact, I like them so much that I take them to bed everytime I go for a catnap. I have a good appetite and really, really, like people.
I am a very shy girl named Makita. I ignore the other cats but I startle easily. I wish I could tell people why I am so skittish but they don’t understand Catlish. I am looking for a quiet & patient indoor home. I may sit on your knee now and again - but usually only when I wish, and likely when you are trying to do something else!
I am a 7-8yr old Lab/Hound X named Betty Bear who just wants to make her people happy. I chatted with you last issue too. My foster family is very pleased because I have started to remember how much I like to play with toys as well as my furry foster brother. I can get excited on the leash, but once you tell me to I will calm down and wait nicely.

the best of the three of us, with no visible injuries. We know we are super cute and such sweet little girls, but if you are thinking of applying to adopt us, please do a bit of research about greyhounds, so you are certain we are the right breed for your family. Snuggles… Jade, Jewel and Topaz. Adopt Don’t Shop
S
CARS is used to welcoming all breeds, sizes and ages into care, but as far as anyone remembers this is likely the first litter of purebred greyhound puppies we have ever cared for. Here is their story.
SCARS hopes that people looking for a new pet will always choose to adopt from rescue. However, if you do purchase from a breeder, please do your research. The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies has tips for choosing a reputable and responsible breeder.
Hey SCARS fans, we have just arrived at our foster home. After facing many challenges and a long trip, we are now safe. We are the surviving three girls from a large litter. We were born five weeks ago at a place where we were being raised for sale. Our siblings did not survive the early weeks, raising puppies requires great care and attention. Rescue groups like SCARS and experienced, responsible breeders know how challenging caring for puppies in the early days is and it is not an easy task. We were not the only dogs on the property, and our mom couldn’t always look out for us. We decided playing with the big dogs (a one-year-old Great Dane pup) was a good idea. In hind sight it wasn’t the best decision of our young lives. The Great Dane didn’t know any better, he is just a puppy too, but what started out as fun ended up with us airborne like little footballs. Kind of like when your dog plays with a chew toy. The breeder called a good friend of SCARS who does rescue work in the area. Bev never turns down a request for assistance. She immediately went and got us and convinced the breeder to spay our mom so this doesn’t happen again.
We know “rescued” isn’t really a breed but it turns out that many Canadians call it their favourite. When Canadian Living Magazine asked their readers to share their favourite breeds, by far, the most mentioned was “any breed, as long as it is rescued.” Why are rescues so great? We think there are many reasons but here are our top five.
Bev called SCARS and a foster home was found for us. Our volunteer driver, Trish, picked us up along with three other puppies that Bev had rescued from other situations and we made the two hour drive back to Edmonton. Once in Edmonton, Trish transferred us to our foster mom and our journey continued to our new home near Westlock. It was already late in the evening, but everyone was concerned about Jade’s leg. She seemed to be in pain so we stopped at the Westlock Veterinary Center. Thank you to Dr. Trevor Jackson for accepting the after hours call, doing an assessment on all three pups and providing pain medicine. Jade has a greenstick fracture in her hind leg. It is stable and the bones are currently aligned correctly, so we are going to let mother nature work her healing magic with rest and time. Jewel has some contusions and trauma to her head, possibly from being grabbed and tossed. She will be carefully monitored but time and rest are the prescription for healing. Topaz seems to have fared
4. Adopting helps communities: SCARS works in communities to remove strays and reduce the number of unaltered owned pets. When you support SCARS, you are helping to improve the health and wellness of rural communities with severe pet overpopulation issues. We think many adopters truly enjoy that aspect. It’s an easy way to make a positive impact to the world. When it comes to pets, please adopt instead of shop.

1. You are saving a life: When you adopt, you are saving a pet from a terrible fate. Check out the rescue stories on our website for examples. 2. Adopting saves you money: Adoption fees are reasonable and include spay/neuter, first vaccinations, microchip and health check. 3. We set you up for success: Adopters like that SCARS helps them choose a pet that matches their lifestyle and level of pet ownership experience. Should things not work out, even years later, we will accept the animal back into our care.
5. Your rescued pet is unique: We sometimes get purebreds but rescues are often a mix of several breeds so each dog is one of a kind. We assess behaviour and get to know their unique personalities while they live in our private foster homes. There truly is no difference between the quality of a purebred and a mixed breed. All dogs can be great in the right environment or potentially dysfunctional in the prm wrong one. pet rescue magazine April/May 2015

Edmonton Humane Society Greetings, I am Spock. I was born with a birth defect that leaves me with a permanent Vulcan salute – any trekkies out there? I am an independent 4yr old boy that likes attention on my terms; when the mood strikes, I soften into a real sweetheart! Go slow with me, though – sometimes I still think I’m waging intergalactic battles and can play a bit rough. I am part of the Cattitude Cats program, which means my fee is waived. Will you be the captain of my starship enterprise? I can’t wait to live long and pawspurr in my forever home!
Hi, I’m Oreo - pleased to meet you! Just like my namesake, I am a really sweet gal. I am friendly and enjoy interacting with my human companions, but I can be shy so go slow with me. I adore head rubs and readily accept treats from a sharing hand. I’d be a great addition to a family looking for a tender, tame friend.
I am a true-to-nature 4yr old Tortie named Cosmos with an independent streak. My frostbitten ear tips attest to my strong spirit. A little bit sugar and a little bit spice; I like to lead the way in sharing my affections. I am not a constant cuddler, but I’m partial to gentle chin and cheek rubs. Do you see Cosmos in your stars?
I’m an exuberant & peppy 1yr old named Bob that has unfettered curiosity. I channel the active spirit of my wild ancestors through energetic play; I have even been known to be a bit mischievous. I love cuddlin up and interacting with my human friends. If you’re looking for a buddy to clown around with, Bob’s your uncle!

Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society Hi there! My name is Toby and I get along with everyone. I am about 13yrs old. Yah, I know what you’re thinking… poor thing, he’s so old, he may not be around too long - but let me tell you! I’m as healthy and happy as they come! I am a kitten at heart and you don’t even need to litter train me. I’m a laid back and mellow fellow who loves to give affection. I purr constantly so you know I’m a happy go lucky guy. I have a lot of years left in me, so please don’t let my age hinder your consideration of adopting me. I am patiently waiting for you!
I’m Miss Clementine. I was rescued with my kittens by a nice gentleman to which I am so very grateful. My kittens have all found homes and now it’s my turn. I’m still getting used to my foster home, but so far it’s pretty awesome. I happily eat whatever I’m given and I am good with the other cats. I am about 1yr old and although I prefer to sit on my own I still like plenty of attention. My favorite place is the top of the couch where I can nap and stay close to my foster mom. Sometimes I even sneak in bed when my foster siblings aren’t looking!

Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team
Hello everyone. My name is Benny and I am super sweet, gentle and kind. I can be a little timid at first so a quiet home with lots of TLC and no young children would be ideal. I have an enlarged heart (with murmur) so I do require medication (taken on my food) twice a day.
I am a beautiful and talkative gal named Cally. I am very excited when they come home, but I am pretty independent. I would prefer a home without young children (patience is not my best virtue!) and I would really love to be your one and only pet.
Our names are Leah (right) and Peaches and we are a wonderful bonded pair of Ragdolls. Peaches is very outgoing, snuggly and playful whereas I am very sweet and gentle. I am still learning to trust people but I adore treats and I have a special place in my heart for anyone who spoils me. We are looking for a quiet home that will help us to continue to grow our personalities.
I am sooo glad it is spring time! Finally I can bask in the warmth and chase sunbeams all day. Hello rescue fans, I am a very friendly, sweet & chatty girl named Rosie. I love people and will eat up all the attention I can possibly get. I also do well with other respectful animals.
