COVER I’m an active 6mth old girl named Gypsy who loves to go for long walks. I get along well with everyone and I weigh about 60lbs. We’re working on my manners, but I can be a little stubborn and need a firm leader so that I grow up into the best dog I can be. I’m also a super snuggler and will try to get as close to you as I can For more about me contact the Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society their info is on page 26.

Humane Animal Rescue Team My name is Faline and I came into rescue with my brother, Bambi. I’m still a little shy but I love getting attention once I’m comfortable. There’s nothing I enjoy more than going for walks and getting goofy with my canine buddies. I am truly precious, and with patience & support in a loving new home I’ll continue to thrive.

Howdy, I am Bambi. Like my sister, Faline, I love playing with other dogs so a confident dog in my new home to keep me company would be ideal. I don’t like walks too much, in fact I really like hanging out in the nice secure yard. I am a loyal, wonderful, and loving dog once I know you but it does take me a little while to trust.

Hello friends! I’m a super affectionate boy named Bullet. I tend to form an intense bond with my primary caregiver; I just want to be around my human at all times! I’m smart, housetrained, and I already know all my basic commands. My foster Mom says I’m an expert snuggler who knows exactly when a cuddle is needed.

I’m a super smart little dude named Cola. I am already clicker trained and highly motivated by food, balls & praise to learn more. I prefer women over men, but I warm up quickly if men praise me and give me a little attention. I’m a super loveable guy who wants nothing more than to please you. YOU need a snuggle buddy!

My name is Gamble and I am a lovely girl who had a bit of a rough start. I would be very happy to have another dog in my new home as I’m not really a one-dog-a-pack kind of gal. I love my humans and would like to sleep in my new pawrents room so I don’t get lonely. I would do best in an active home and would make a great running companion.

CAUTION Hello everyone. I’m a people-person kind of girl and I just love everyone. My name is Georgia and the trainer says I’m a love bug who adores cuddling. I’m also a very active & smart girl who will do just about anything for a treat and some affection. I’m an enthusiastic sweetheart who would love to find a family that can match my energy.

I’m a big loveable fellow named Xavier. I’m such a happy dude that I never stop wiggling my tail! I love to spend time with my humans, playing tug-of-war, and getting body massages. I’ve also been known to sneak up on the couch or bed for extra snuggles. I walk well on leash and I’ve already mastered many commands like sit, stay, & go to bed.

Sundance Canine Rescue Society My name is Amber and I am a 1yr old Shepherd X. I came from a difficult background where my family was kept with other dogs, a lot of other dogs… I think the humans call it hoarding. We spent some time with behavior specialists before my mom and dad were adopted, but I needed a bit more socialization. I am looking for a loving & patient home. Currently I am in an amazing foster home with two older human foster brothers that are very nice to me, and one furry foster brother that is showing me the ropes. I follow him all over the place and I like to steal his toys and hide them in my beloved kennel. I am completely house trained and will let you know when I have to go out. I also LOVE food -I will do just about anything for food! My foster mom calls me a “mooch”.

Beagle Paws Animal Rescue I’m what they call a “beaker”... what’s a beaker you ask? Well, it means I am part Beagle and part Cocker Spaniel. My name is Diesel but you can just call me handsome. I’m an awesome little dog. I’m quite well behaved, very loving, and I get along well with other dogs & children. I also learn quickly and already know some of my basic commands. Told ya I was awesome!!!

My name is Rolo and I’m truly as sweet as candy! I am also well behaved, good with children and a first class cuddler. I get along with other dogs and even the cats… how’s that for a wellrounded little dog? It seems to me that I have something for just about everyone. If you’re looking for a buddy to snuggle up with on these cold winter nights I’d be more than happy to help you out.

Ft. McMurray SPCA Hi, my name is Ellie. I have been here way too long. I’ve seen so many cats come and go, but I just keep getting overlooked. I like my naps, and will tolerate being groomed. If you’re gentle, I also enjoy a nice massage. It can get noisy in the cat room, so I hang out in my kennel. I can be overwhelmed with lots of people so a nice quiet home would be ideal. If you could offer that, I would surely give you love and snuggles.

Hello, I’m Grover! I just met you and I love you. Do you have treats? I LOVE treats. I like to chew up toys, and my humans know to give me only really, really, tough toys. I have made several different doggy friends here and I have really enjoyed playing with them. I love people, and I know my manners, but I still like to jump up and sneak a “hug”. I also get a little nervous still on walks so I don’t always get to go far. I love playing outside, though! With all my great qualities, I really don’t understand why I have not been adopted yet.

The Magic of Christmas never ends and its greatest of giftsare family and friends. Thanks for your support! www.fortmcmurrayspca.ca

I’m Marley, a 3yr old Shepherd X. My foster mom thinks I am a wonderful & loyal girl who will make an excellent best buddy for the right person. My ideal home would be low traffic with people that really enjoy going for walks. Another dog would be ideal but it really isn’t necessary.

Della here. I’m a large girl around 6yrs old. I am great on and off leash and I especially love going for quad rides. My foster mom says I am so loyal, and that I am very attentive and listen very well. I do love playing but I can be a little picky about what dogs I call my friends.

My name is Ruby. Not sure what breed(s) I am a mix of… Border Collie, Chow, Husky, and Lab are a few possibilities. I’m going on 9 years in this world, and that has taught me a thing or two. I like kids and I think other dogs are great. I am a very sweet and all around wonderful girl who loves to play and run around!

My name is A-ha. I’m a handsome little boy that loves chasing toys and playing games -especially the fishing game on an iPad. I’m not shy and will climb right up on your lap for cuddle time. I have been around large calm dogs in foster care and don’t mind them at all. Can I please come climb your Christmas tree?

I’m Gear. I am a mixed breed of the very best types and all I want to do is please you. I am an active 4yr old that walks well on leash but I do need a confident handler. I am crate-trained and sleep in one every night with no problem. I’m good with most dogs but I would like a new home with no cats. My name is Santa. I’m a 5yr old boy who is very sweet and cuddly. I would love to be your only cat. I promise I have enough love that you won’t need any others. I’m a calm and laid back sweetheart that is just looking for a warm lap, loving hands and a window to look out... treats & toys would be a bonus! local stories...local people...local pets

My name is Fraser and I am a 4mth old Lab X. I’ll likely be 70lbs+ once grown. I already walk on a leash, sit and shake a paw. “Down” is coming a along, and “come” is a done deal –mostly. Fun stuff! I’m a bit timid of new dogs, but I’m building more confidence every day.

Rush here. I am a laid back, very handsome, 3yr old, Lab X that weighs 66lbs. I love going for long walks and sleeping in… especially when I stay up late watching for Santa! I sure hope I’m adopted and he fills my stocking with bones & squeaky toys.

Everyone calls me Roscoe. I’m a 5yr old Chocolate Lab X and I weigh about 70lbs. I am good with other dogs and adore kids. I also walk well on a leash and I’m house trained. I really adore people and I can’t wait to have my very own family. I sure hope I’m adopted soon and home in time for the holidays!!!

I am Bart and I am a 9yr old Boxer X. You need look no further if you want a loyal, happy, toy stealing, loveable take-off artist in your life! I am a great dog who loves kids and other dogs. I take off when I am un-leashed so we will have to go adventuring together... want to come?

Dear Santa, I have been very good and I really want a loving home. I’m an older girl or at least I appear to be older. I am partially blind and although it doesn’t bother me, my new family must put steroid drops in my eyes daily. I’m very friendly with people and a home with a male dog would be swell, but I can be grumpy with females. I am house & crate trained, andI promise to be the best little girl I can. Will you please find me a new home for Christmas? A couple of treats and a stuffy toy would be great too! Love Popsicle

Adorado’s Legacy Hi, I am told that I am quite an eye catching little filly, but like so many foals who were sold at a September auction during a ‘production sale, I was destined for slaughter - there were just too many of us, and not nearly enough private buyers. My sire’s name is Reynolds Salty, and my dam’s (mom’s) name is Red Mara. I can be registered, as I came with a signed application for AQHA registration, and a signed transfer of ownership; both will go with me when I am adopted. I am told that I am leggy, and that I have a quiet, confident disposition. Apparently, I even look like I have eye brows? I sure would raise them in surprise that no one wanted me, if I even understood what that meant.

‘SANTA UP’ for one of these babies, by contributing ANY amount, we will put up a stocking for them in the barn, and put your name on it as their special santa . We will also send you a card with their photo on it, recognizing your support. ALSO, as a foal’s SPECIAL SANTA, you may submit a barn name for your sponsored foal - so far, we have named one bay filly Siena, but the other babies sure do need their own barn names. More than one special Santa for each would be amazing, in which case we will draw one name from those submitted.

Put

AND ONE MORE option: We have 46 other horses and foals here, so if you have a favorite, and want to be named as their special santa, we will put up stocking for them, too - the foals don’t eat appples and carrots yet, but the ‘big babies’ sure do! All contributions go directly to the care of the horses.

Hello, my name is Alena and everyone says I am the perfect cat for any home. I am a sweet, gentle and patient girl who has impeccable house manners. I love sitting in a cat tree, lying in my cat bed, or simply stretching out in a sunbeam. I have a very sweet and calming influence about me and I can’t wait to share all my gifts with you.

I am a gorgeous Calico named Jelena. I have a lovely disposition and I ADORE people and dogs. It does not take much to get me purring away. I am a very loyal and devoted girl who will be perfect to spend the chilly winter days with. I really hope my new family is not too far away – after all, adoption is the GREATEST gift this holiday season!!!

I am a calm and mature boy named Ollie. I have lots of kitten left in me but I prefer to spend my time lounging or bathing in the sun. I am a little charmer and I like to stay close and follow you from room to room. I am looking for a quiet home with no young children. I am a bit of a king, and would love to be your one and only feline.

I am a high-energy cat named Sheena. I have a top-notch sense of curiosity, amazing agility, and the speed and body of a proathlete. I am also a lap cat and I adore being with people. Sometimes I get so excited I might give you a little nip, but it’s believed I just need the right person to understand me. If you are a mature home and looking for the most amazing & intelligent cat I would really love to meet you!

I am a very sweet Rotti X and everyone calls me Duchess. I have been here for several months now and everyone is very nice but I really want a home of my very own. They named me Sapphire and I am definitely a gem! I am a very social 1yr old German Shepherd X. I get along well with everyone it seems, but I am showing a little too much interest in cats. I am looking for an active & loving home where I can go on lots of car rides and walks.

Howdy! I am a 1.5yr old Blue Tick Heeler/ Beagle X named Tracker. I love to follow my nose and I need lots of exercise. I will also need a securely fenced yard for my own safety. I am a barrel of fun just waiting for you to take me home so I can keep you smiling forever!

Hello folks! My name is Darcy and I have been at the SPCA for a while now. I am a 1.5yr old Border Collie X who loves to go for walks. Kids kind of scare me so I would do best with a mature family. I am hoping for a loving new home to take me home in time to celebrate the holidays.

Edmonton Humane Society If you were to look up the word “adorable” in the dictionary, you may just find a picture of me alongside it! My name is Bart and I fancy myself quite the looker. I am friendly and affectionate, and I adore sharing quality snuggle time with my special person. Whether in your arms, on your lap, or stretched out beside you for a luxurious tummy rub, I am truly a gentle joy to have around. If you welcome me into your home, I promise to keep your lap and heart warm during the cold winter nights ahead. The presence of my feline comrades makes me uncomfortable, so I am part of the Cattitude Cat program… I am such a special guy that my adoption fee is waived!

Happy Holidays to all our supporters from the staff of the EHS

I am a loving & bubbly, 8mth old, Shepherd/Lab X named Brutus who is looking for an active home where I can get lots of playtime and cuddles. I am affectionately known as a bit of a “problem child” around the shelter; I have some quirks, but they just add to my charm! My energy levels may overwhelm younger children – make sure you can handle my pizazz!

Hello Rescue Fans! I am a 3yr old, stoic & dignified gentleman named Trident who prefers to live life at my own stately pace. I have a rugged old boy aesthetic -a scruffy charmer with raggedy ears and bushy white whiskers. Don’t let that fool you though; I enjoy being pampered! My laidback & gentle presence will charm you for years to come.

I am a 5yr old beauty named Jemma that has been lodging here since the summer, and I am ready to grace another abode with my mellow presence. I like to weave around your ankles and receive gentle cuddles. I’m not a total bean bag though; an elusive laser dot will elicit plenty of squeaky meows and playful chirps! I’m really the best of both worlds: playful and sweet, with a laidback, chill attitude. I sure hope to celebrate the holidays with my forever family.

DOG NAMED

A

GRACE By Travis Grant

M

eet a dog like Grace – her tail wagging gleefully despite the quills that have pinned her muzzle closed, as her puppies wiggle and roll beneath her skinny frame – and you’ll start to grasp the powerful inaccuracies underlying stereotypes and caricatures of animal homelessness. Thousands of animals come to the Edmonton Humane Society each year. Unless someone has spoken on their behalf, most of their stories are stowed silently and expressed instinctually, informed by the hardened experiences that have shaped them. 16

pet rescue magazine

December/January 2015

When a homeless animal comes to the shelter starving, filthy, and wounded, it’s jarring to see the impact of neglect in real time. You wonder what it was like for a dog such as Grace to scratch out a living, with no certainty or safety, overlooked by many of us with the capacity to make her life decent. You start to think a dog like Grace is rough, unlovable, wild…and then you speak to her in soft, reassuring tones and she looks up, her glistening nose quivering as she sniffs you before pressing her head affectionately into the palm of your hand. local stories...local people...local pets

It’s emotional to see that kind of unjustified trust, that urge to show and feel affection. It has a strange effect where you feel unworthy to be the object of it. And then it empowers you because you suddenly realize you have a part to play in changing an animal’s life forever. There are many others who play a part, too. Grace was living beneath the steps of a home on the Paul Band reserve. She had gone there to give birth to a litter of puppies. The homeowner had kept watch over Grace and her pups, eager to make sure they were OK. She had even started feeding them with food from the Parkland Pet Food Bank – a charitable organization dedicated to feeding animals who’ve gone hungry. Brenda Martin, Shirley Rudland, and Margot Allen – each of whom have worked in animal welfare for many years and are tremendous supporters of the Edmonton Humane Society – founded the Parkland Pet Food Bank in the summer of 2013 in response to the vast numbers of animals living in unpredictable situations where food isn’t a certainty. In little over a year, the Parkland Pet Food Bank became more than just a means for distributing food to animals in need. As Brenda, Shirley, and Margot deepened their connections within the rural areas where they work, trust began building and people started seeking their advice on helping homeless animals in their communities. This was precisely the situation that led the homeowner who kept watchful eye over Grace and her puppies to call the Parkland Pet Food Bank for help. As Grace’s puppies got older, Grace would often leave them under the step for periods of time, but she always returned. Then one morning, she left the puppies and disappeared local stories...local people...local pets

for several days. The homeowner called Brenda and Shirley, concerned for the well being of the mom and pups. Brenda and Shirley offered to get the puppies and bring them to the Edmonton Humane Society, where they would be safe and warm and in the care of an amazing team of animal health professionals. Just before Brenda and Shirley arrived, Grace returned, her face swollen and bloodied from 15 or so porcupine quills buried deep in her muzzle, pinning it shut. I was in my office, writing a different article for Pet Rescue Magazine, when Brenda and Shirley came to the door and told me about Grace. Together, we went to see her and the puppies where they were being treated in the EHS’ animal hospital. As soon as we entered the room, Grace’s tail began wagging like a metronome. Then she rested on her haunches and started eagerly shifting her weight from paw to paw, sensing perhaps that everyone in the room was focused solely on making her feel safe and comfortable. After administering a sedative, the EHS’ medical team plucked the quills from Grace’s muzzle, while the puppies played in a kennel. I visited Grace the following day. Her and her puppies were clean, fed, watered, and indescribably happy. It was striking – and moving – to see how far each of them had come from the previous day, looking filthy, injured, and – to many, no doubt – disposable. But underneath all of it was the sweetest nature, unquestioning trust, and a profound ability to rattle a stereotype to its foundation through unconditional love. All of it is testament to the remarkable things that happen when we look past stereotypes, and choose instead to work together to create meaningful and lasting change in the lives of homeless animals. It’s an affirmation of what amazing things are possible. And that’s something to behold. prm pet rescue magazine December/January 2015

Wishes Warmest for a oliday H l u f r e d Won all Season to s orter our supp from the LCL cats and volunteers

Happy Holiday’s Pet Rescue fans, my name is Larry. As you can see I’m a stunning white kitten with hypnotic blue eyes. I’m very active, very loving and so ready to find my perfect family. I supposed that would be the purrfect gift for me.

My name is Georgia. I came into care as a wild kitten with my brother Night. I am now very sweet and good with other cats. Dogs on the other hand may not be on my list of friends as I’ve never been around them. I’m sleek, silky, shiny and downright gorgeous.

Hi there my name is Night. There’s no brownie points for guessing why. I love to be around my people so much you have to be careful I don’t trip you up. I’m super friendly and have the shinest coat ever. Please, don’t overlook us black cats, we are purrfect.

Howdy, I am Martie. I would love to play all the kitten games you want. I can’t wait to go to my forever home because I hear this time of year there’s a great climbing adventure in most homes called a Christmas Tree... do you have one for me?

I’m little Sophie. I’m a snugglebug and would love it if you would consider giving me a home to call my own. Of course I will come with all the kitten antics and personality you are looking for.

As you can see I’m crossing my paws that you will fall in love with me. I’m an active kitten called Gus that will keep you young and on your toes. Add some laughter to your life... adopt me please!

Yes, I love belly rubs. My name is Sammy and I am looking for that special family that will take me home. My sister’s name is Sophie and well wouldn’t we make a great pair... just sayin’.

ARTS Senior Animal Rescue

Hello, my name is Nyla and I am a very sweet 10yr old Collie/Pitty X. I am a very loving girl who has been patiently waiting for my retirement home to find me. I get along with other dogs and will consider it my job to make sure you are safe in life. After spending most of my life having pups I am learning to love the good things in life. It’s finally my turn to relax and stretch out my paws! Please come and meet me... I’d love the chance to meet you. My name is Holly and I am a 12yr old Jack Russell. I am living with lots of doggie pals and a cat-type critter too but they don’t bother me much. I can be a bit excitable so I would probably do best with older children. My absolute favorite thing to do is snuggle up on a big pillow with you‌ and maybe even sneak in under the covers if you don’t mind. I have been wishing really hard to Santa that I will find a forever home soon! My name is Rudolph and I am a good looking, 10yr old, 90lb, Staffie X. I consider myself to be a calm and experienced dog who takes most things in stride. I get along great with other dogs and older kids. I am looking for a good retirement home that will have a soft cozy bed for me to curl up on. Maybe even a fireplace to keep me warm during those cold nights –of course I’d prefer to snuggle with you!

My name is Peanut and I am the sweetest 12yr Cocker Spaniel‌ or at least that’s what I keep hearing from everyone. My mom had to go to a senior facility and couldn’t take me with her, but I am having a great time in my foster home. I get along with cats and other dog but I kinda prefer older kids’ cuz I can’t keep up to those young ones! If you are looking for the perfect little girl, look no further. You’ve FOUND her!

Hello everyone, my name is Maggie. I am a quiet bird who can get nervous in new situations. I would do best in a calm home with mature people. I really enjoy head scratches and I like to sit with you as long as there is not a lot of activity going on.

My name is Mr. Spock, and I am a Goffin’s Cockatoo. I am a very active bird who needs to have plenty of exercise and lots of things to chew. My favorite things to chew are the things people leave lying around… like remote controls -but if you give me enough toys I will leave your toys alone!

Hi there. We are a family of seven Zebra Finches; Mom and Dad have been busy this last month! All of our babies are almost done weaning. They still beg for the occasional feed but we are starting to say no. We would like to stay together but our little ones can be separated.

They named me Mork. I am a very cute grey kitten that was found outside of the U of A with my siblings. All of us were pretty scared at first but we quickly came around. I quite like getting attention and now I am a total lap cat! I told Santa I wanted my very own family for Christmas… I sure hope he comes through.

My name is Julia Child and I am a beautiful 40lb Akita/ Shepherd X. A few days after rescue, on November 1st, I gave birth to 8 healthy pups. I had 4 girls and 4 boys, and we all seem to have amazing temperaments. My puppies will be ready for new homes around 8wks old… just in time to ring in the 2015 New Year!!!

Hello Rescue fans! I am a stunning 6yr old Shep/ Husky X named Missy. I am a happy & sweet gal who loves cuddle time. I also love to play and go for car rides. I have sensitive skin but with my raw diet I am doing great. I’m not keen on other dogs, but otherwise I am a fantastic dog!

I’m Jessie, also known by my stage name Zsa Zsa Gabor. I’m a tiny girl who’s mainly interested in eating and sleeping, but as I grow, my personality is blossoming! I think I am a Rotti/Shep X but I seem pretty small… maybe I’ll turn out to be a wolverine! I am be ready for adoption so please don’t waste any time... apply today!

My name is Aurora. I actually had a home but turns out other felines and I don’t get along, so being in a home as the only cat is best for me. I am good with dogs and think I would be good with kids too. I am a stunning ginger around 1yr old. I love to play & cuddle, and I am already doing clicker & harness training. Ello, my name is Morgan. I am a beautiful girl that was found with my littermates near the U of A. I am working on being socialized as I have never had a home before or a person to love & care for me. I am looking for a patient home that will continue to help me build more confidence. local stories...local people...local pets

They call me Oogie, Boogie. I was found downtown after some kind folks heard some meowing from down a grate. They had to build a 12 foot pole to fish me out. I was pretty happy and although still a little timid I have become quite the cuddler. Once I am tired out from playing I enjoy snuggling up close and purring away. Well hello! I am a 2.5yr old Boxer named Ty. I love to play and have energy to burn! I am a loyal boy; once you’re in my pack I will love you forever. I adore kids but they tell me I can be a bit of a bull in a China shop when it comes to the little ones. I would do well as the only dog or perhaps with a calm doggy lady friend, but please no cats.

We here at Zoe’s animal rescue would like to thank I am Sully. I like to follow my foster Dad around everywhere. He says I’m a great catch: I’m quiet, house-trained, and I love to cuddle. I don’t get into trouble when left alone, and once properly introduced I like most other dogs. My lungs have some damage, but with holistic medication and raw food diet I am doing great!

My name is Willow and I adore people of all sizes. I’ve been in rescue for a while because I don’t get along with cats, or most dogs (large mellow males seem ok). I can be a little quirky, for instance I’m really scared of the vacuum; I like to go outside when they bring out the terrormachine!!! However, I am quick to shake a paw with anyone… you just never know who may be packing treats!

you for your support and wish a Merry Christmas to everyone! Since starting in August 2012 we have rescued & found forever homes for over 350 animals. We couldn’t save all these lives if not for our amazing supporters.

Thank you!

Forever And A Day Small Dog Rescue Hi there! My name is Buddy and I’m looking for my perfect forever family. I’ve been in rescue for a while now, but I have not found a home yet. I love to be with my people, and don’t really like being left alone unless I’m comfy & cozy in my crate. My foster family says I’m just the sweetest boy, and that I love to use my nose to find hidden treats. If you have the free time to spend with me, and don’t mind a little fur, please visit the website and inquire about me today.

Happy Holidays from everyone at FAAD Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team

Hello out there! My name is Patches and I am a sweet, gentle & loving gal. I love to be around people and I’m very talkative. I LOVE to tell stories. I need to be the only pet in my new home, but that’s ok because I can give you all the love you will need.

I’m Charm. Some people look at me and just see my stubby tail and wobbly walk, but here’s what you may not see - I am brave, playful and oh so friendly! I love being cuddled and when I purr my whole body vibrates. I like other cats and find dogs interesting. I am a sweet & tiny girl with a huge personality.

I am a laid back boy named Dayton. I am affectionate, friendly, great with other cats, and I love to snuggle up with people of all ages. Playing is one of my favorite past times; I love to pounce on my toys! I like everyone and would even be happy living with a submissive dog or two.

Hi. I am a very sweet & curious girl named Panda. I love exploring and my two favorite things are cat nip and cat grass. I can’t get enough of my people and I love to hang out with them all the time. When my new home comes along I’d like you to know I would do well with another submissive cat.

They call me Tickles, and I love to snuggle. I am a bit shy but once I feel safe I am quite playful & curious. I love watching the birds outside the window and I have done great with other cats in my foster home. My greatest wish is to be in my own home... perhaps I can find a new family to ring in the New Year with!!!

With nothing but hope and tenacity SAFE Team started to ask for help from the site Security in allowing them to leave food and water out just in case Harmony did escape from the fourth floor condo apartment. They also knocked on doors in the neighbourhood and put up posters of her pretty face. Day in day out, week in week out there was reports of cats but none fully matched Harmony’s description. “It was an emotional roller coaster every time a call came in.” said Kirby Seidler of SAFE Team.

Now if you know anything about cats you’ll know of their versatility, resilience and prowness and little Miss Harmony is the essence of all three. Not only did she escape the mayhem four floors up that night, she continued to survive on her own for four months. Unexpectedly, on December 2nd she was found huddled in the wall of a ground floor condo by a demolition worker who immediately contacted SAFE Team because of their previous efforts to locate her. We are happy to report that Harmony is now back with Megan and is starting to lap up many long lost hugs and kisses from the Martin family. Happy Holidays Harmony!

Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society Hello, I’m Toby. Now I know what you’re thinking… “poor thing, he’s so old, he might not be around too long…” but let me tell you, I’m as healthy and happy as they come!!! I am 13yrs young and a kitten at heart -you don’t even need to litter train me. I’m a laid back and mellow fellow and I love to give affection. I have a lot of years left so please don’t let my age hinder your consideration of adopting me. I am patiently waiting!

I’m a calm & shy 2yr old Boxer X named Daisy. I am nervous with new situations or people so please introduce me slowly and safely. I like to share my food and treats, and I already know some of my basic commands. I don’t really know how to play yet, but I warm up real quick, so I will learn in no time!

Hello ladies! I’m Handsome.. I mean.. Hugo. I’m a real ladies man (but fellas, I’m starting to warm up to you too!). I was a stray who ended up at a pound. I had a big abscess on my face, but the vet cleaned it right up and I’m good as new! If you’re looking for a laid back kinda guy, I’m your man! Hey, it’s me, Ruger! Even though I came in as the smallest pup in my litter, I’ve always been the defender of the pack. I’m a fearless little man! I am a friendly, happy go lucky little guy and the best thing in the world would be for me to find my very own family!

I’m an active 6mth old girl named Gypsy who loves to go for long walks. I get along well with everyone and I weigh about 60lbs. We’re working on my manners, but I can be a little stubborn and need a firm leader so that I grow up into the best dog I can be. I’m also a super snuggler and will try to get as close to you as I can. My name is Ruby and I am 6yrs old. I narrowly escaped being euthanized after I was surrendered to a clinic. I was pretty grumpy when GEARS picked me up so they took me to the vet. Turns out I have arthritis in my back end -no wonder I was so sore! I’m on hip/joint food now and I’m feeling much better. I even like cuddling!

I truly love everybody kids, cats, and dogs included. My name is Easton and I would really like a loving home where my parents are home more often than not. Did I mention how incredibly handsome I am?

Hello world… get ready to be charmed by yours truly! My name is Finn and I am a charismatic guy who likes long walks at the dog park and on occasion a good gossip session. When I’m in the mood I will talk your ear off! Obedience is easy peasy for me; I come when called, I can fetch, I sleep well in my crate, and I sit when asked. I’d be more than happy to love you forever.

Looking for a calm, well-trained guy to take life easy with? I’ve got you covered! My name is Kramer and I’m already house & crate trained. I also walk well on leash. Don’t let my age fool you, I still enjoy the finer things in life and the moment I know we’re going for a walk I get extremely excited!!! Walking, eating and sleeping on my soft bed are definitely the finer things in life.

I was given the name Leia because every Chihuahua deserves to be a princess… and really, is there any other princess more classic than Princess Leia from Star Wars? I think not! I have come a long way since being rescued form a hoarding situation and I am ready for my new home. I would love another little dog in my new home to play with and I made sure to let Santa know!

Miller

Tails From Home

By Brittany Balzer

I

was born on a cold January day; my mom had been busy trying to keep us warm from the cold winter weather. Something had happened to mom’s owner and so when we were born we didn’t have any shelter. Mom was moving us under old cars trying to block out the wind when a neighbour drove by and saw us. She called for help and the nice people from P.A.R.S’ s came and got us. Sadly, some of my brothers and sisters froze before they could rescue us but I had been lucky to survive. I went home with the people from P.AR.S and I was about six weeks old when they brought me down to Edmonton to meet my possible new family. I wasn’t even up for adoption yet, but these people saw me (Fuzzy Miller) on the website and fell in love and with that, they brought me home. I became friends with two others dogs, one was even a rescue dog from P.A.R.S like me! The following fall, my new mom and owner (Brittany) took me to school, I was a brilliant student! The teachers were so curious about me, they wanted mom to get my DNA checked. The results came back and you wouldn’t believe what I am! They suggested that one of my parents was a purebred shar-pei and the other was a border collie, poodle X. When January came around I found myself heading to 4-H canine with my owner, I was only a year old when I started but I quickly adapted to my Thursday night obedience and agility classes. My first year I was very shy of my new surroundings, but by my third year I was confident and happy to go through the trials. The teachers always wanted to use me as the example (I was called the guinea pig at times) and by the local stories...local people...local pets

end of the third year I was being called “Miller, the superdog!” All the other owners would be astonished at the way I listen to Brittany, I even got to do agility off leash towards the end of the year! In April we had achievement day, it’s a small show to show all of the family what you learned through the year and this past year I was the only dog in my level because the teachers believed it wouldn’t be fair for me to compete with the other dogs due to my level of intelligence. This past July, my owner took me to a 4-H dog show in Mayerthorpe. I was enrolled in an agility class with nine other dogs, they were all very talented like me but when my turn came I had a perfect run, I made my owner very proud! When all the other dogs had their turn we went into the ring for our placings, I was very glad with my run and so was my owner. But to make it even better, I got 1st! The score sheet was given to us after and I had a perfect score, two-hundred out of two-hundred! After that I got a break, now I am hanging out at home for the summer just relaxing but when January comes around I will be in my classes again! I am still young but have already created so many memories with my family. If P.A.R.S hadn’t have been there when I needed them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I love my family and without organizations like P.A.R.S I wouldn’t have a family. I am a lucky pup that was given a second chance and I would just like to say from the tip of my tail to the end of my nose, thank you. “Love Miller”. pet rescue magazine December/January 2015
