BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER Just because you enjoy the heat doesn’t mean your pets do. Two of the most common causes of heatstroke in our pets come from being left in a parked vehicle and from over exertion in hot weather. Keep your pets safe and cool this summer by following a few simple rules: •

Make sure that fresh, cool water is always available. A nonspillable container is helpful and is available at any Pet Planet location. Pay extra attention to grooming during the summer. Removing loose hair and keeping your dog’s coat free of tangles will help them to feel more comfortable when the weather is hot, particularly when your pet is shedding. NEVER leave your pet in an unventilated area, and remember that this can include a house or apartment without air-conditioning as well as a vehicle. An outdoor doghouse or kennel should be well ventilated and located in the shade. Allowing a dog access to a child’s shallow wading pool, filled with an appropriate amount of clean water, is an excellent method for keeping your pet cool during the heat of the day. Overexertion and intense exercise should be avoided during the middle part of the day. Long walks and heavy exercise should be reserved for the early morning and late afternoon.

Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team

My name is Cally and I would like a home where I can be your one and only. I am an outgoing and spunky girl who loves to be the center of attention. Older children would be best as my patience can run short at times - but I more than make up for it in all my snuggly moments. I am a sweet and loving little gal named Ember. I do very well with other cats and would prefer a home with a playmate. I am an adorable and charming little doll who also does well with dogs and children. I sure hope my new family finds me soon.

Hello Rescue Fans! I am a very loving, affectionate & talkative honey named Patches. After having my own 3 babies, and becoming a surrogate mother to 4 others, I am finally ready to find my very own forever home. I am happy that most of my kittens have been adopted but, to be honest, I’m really looking forward to being looked after myself… that was a big job! I love attention and seriously can’t wait to be a full time lap cat. Perhaps we could meet sometime so that you could see firsthand just how precious I really am.

I am Jazmeena. I am an outgoing “Chatty Cathy” who just loves people and snuggling the day away. I need a calm and quiet home (no young children please!) or I can get over stimulated. One other kitty in my new home would be ok though. Aren’t I just the cutest little Panda with these smudges on my face? I am a very gentle and sweet girl who adores people. I LOVE to snuggle!!! I would do well with other submissive cats but I prefer older children -I just can’t keep up with those little ones.

I’m a big lovable gal named Misty. I just love attention, and I seriously can’t get enough of my chewy bones! I am learning to walk better on leash but I need a calm person to work with me so we can all enjoy daily walks. I love being outside so a home with a secure yard is a must.

Hello everyone. My name is Ukie and I am pretty new to hart but they are sure to know a lot more about me very soon. One thing is for sure I am more than just a pretty face. Please check the hart website for an update and more info on me. I can’t wait to find a new home.

I’m a very sweet girl named Shaggy who loves being close to my people. While I am not a high energy girl I do still enjoy my walks. I am OK with other dogs but would be content as an only dog. I would do best in a home where someone is home a lot as I do get anxious when left alone.

CAUTION DOGS AT PLAY My name is Sara Sparkles! I am a lovable & well-rounded girl who is looking for a family to call my own. I do require a lot of cuddles and affection, but as long as you fill my quota for attention I am a pretty easy going and happy girl. I am also good with kids, dogs and cats.

I’m a 1yr old Shepherd/Great Pyrenees X named Marmaduke. I weigh around 75lbs… but I am tall & lanky so I need to put on a bit of weight. I’m submissive & friendly. I get along great with other dogs & cats, but I will try to play with them. I’m also good with older kids, but I might knock small ones over when I get excited. I am an all around super sweet guy who needs a loving family.

I love to snuggle and give kisses! My name is Bella and I am 6yrs young. I also love to play and I am great with fetching. I will bring the ball back as many times as you will throw it. I would do best as the only pet in my new home and preferably with older children.

Tails From Home

All that Jazz! Little did Jazz (Jack) know that when he came to the rescue of his buddy, someone was waiting to rescue him. By Michelle Rottier

H

i there, my name is Jazz. I’d like to tell you a bit of my story. I was attacked by a pack of dogs because I was trying to protect my dog friend. I didn’t fair so well and had my ear nearly ripped off and my head was cut open pretty bad. I also have a scar now by my eye and one on my nose. Then SCARS came to my rescue. I developed a nasty ear infection because of my injury and had to have a lot of my teeth pulled. Everyone involved took such good care of me. While I was at my foster family, little did I know someone was keeping tabs on me by checking the SCARS website! This man and lady came to meet me and take me for a walk. They really liked me and my foster Mom said we would be a great match! Finally my forever home! I love my new home! I have a

nice large fenced in area I sleep in at night and a nice dog house. I also go in the garage when it’s cold outside. My Mom likes to comb me and rub my tummy, who wouldn’t like that? I like to make talking noises and my family thinks it’s pretty funny. I get along well with the 2 cats and one of them likes to lay on my tail and the other one bumps up against me.... I think they really like having me around! I am an older guy so I like to relax most of the day which suits me just fine! I go on my own for my little walk around the farm and check things out a couple times during the day. I don’t run away because I get looked after so well at my new home. My Mom takes me for walks during the day and I love going for my walks! Sometimes I don’t want to go far when we walk so I look up at my Mom and take her hand gently in my mouth.

August/September 2014

Then she stops and we go back home.... she listens pretty well! My Mom tells me she loves me so much and is so glad I am part of their family! Sometimes she has tears in her eyes because she wonders what my life was like before I was rescued. Then she gives me a hug and says she’s so happy I am her puppy. I am so thankful for Scars and my Foster Family and all they have done for me. I hear my Mom say that she is thankful that SCARS helped me, I am too! It’s nice to be part of a family that loves and cares for me, I love my forever home! Thank you SCARS, my Foster Family, and my Forever home for loving me and taking such good care of me. Spay Neuter Action Program Hi my name is Roo. Can you scratch my tummy? I love having that done. My foster dad thinks I have a cool attitude. I spend my days having fun with my foster brothers and sisters. We get along great. My foster parents have made me very comfortable and I know you will do the same. Please bring me home furever you won’t be disappointed.

I’m Petunia and I am special. I can be a very timid cat at first. Due to my past I need time to warm up and trust you. Once I have that trust, I am a very loving cat. I play well with my new foster brothers and sisters but don’t do too well with big dogs. Please come and see me to see how well we can connect. I am still looking for my furever home.

I am looking for a home with another dog to keep me company and where I won’t be left alone too long. I thrive around people and furry friends. I would do great in a busy home.

Little Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society

My name is Calvin as in Calvin Klein. I’m super sweet and I love to purr. I like to play “catch me if you can” when I’m playing but when you do...I’ll just purr up a storm in your arms. I particularly love to play with my brother Hugo and the thought of going home together is absolutely fabulous!

My name is Hugo Boss. I’m 4mths old and Calvin Klein is my brother. We are very cute, playful, bonded kittens and it would be the best thing in the world if we could find a home together. Although if there is another kitty in the house that would snuggle with me I’d like that too.

Yep... I’m Dennis and I’m the kitten who’s the menance of the bunch. Always looking for something to do and a human to play with. Really I’m very sweet! I’ve grown a little since this picture but still I’m only 12wks old. Let’s get together so we can have some fun why don’t we!

Hi there I’m Dexter and I love to play and follow my brother Dennis around. I’m also about 12wks and full of energy. Like my brother Calvin, I have a sweet personality that nobody could resist. Although I’m full of antics I’m seriously looking to find my home so please ask about me... you won’t be sorry!

Well hello kitty lovers Jersey here. I’m a great little girl that was taken from a local pound with my siblings because we were wild. I’m all done with that now and ready to move on. I’m about 4mths old.

Hi there my name is Mirage. I’m a great 4mth old boy who is just itching to find my own family. I was wild but now I’m friendly so I’d love a Mom and Dad. Will you think about adopting me?

Hi there I’m Rene. I was very wild when I came into care with my brothers and sister. I’ve now learned that scratching is not a nice thing to do but playing is much better and lots of fun.

Fry

By: Lori Trudgeon

H

i, my name is Fry. A bit of bad luck in the form of parvo turned out to be the catalyst that gave me my second chance. The weekend of May 23-25, 2014 was the scariest and best weekend of my short life. Why, you ask? Well that’s the weekend that the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force (and rescues like SCARS) visited the First Nations community where I was born. They were there to provide a pet wellness clinic intended to alleviate animal suffering and reduce the local pet overpopulation. By the end of the clinic, they had spayed/neutered 192 owned animals and 67 relinquished or stray animals had been transferred to partner rescue groups. I was one of the 67. This is my story.

No one knows where my life began or what happened to my mom, but I was all alone when I showed up at a rural acreage. They started to feed me so I decided to stay. I was just a little guy and really didn’t know where I was supposed to be or who I was supposed to be with. I just knew I had to do whatever I could to survive. I was terrified of people and no one could get near me so they assumed I was feral. I hung out in a dense but narrow stand of trees between a quiet lake and the family’s home. When people approached, I could run and hide. There was an old couch by a fire pit and I liked to sit on it as long as no one came too close. It was the only comfort I had. It isn’t much fun hanging out on rotting logs and prickly bushes but I didn’t know what else to do. At least now I had food. The family’s children wanted to get close to me because I was so cute. I had these adorable ears that were almost taller than my tiny frame. I was just a baby, maybe 10 weeks old. But they made a lot of noise and moved really fast and that scared me even more. Then the task force volunteers arrived that fateful day and asked the residents if they had any pets. They were offering a free trip to their clinic where pets could get spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and tattooed, and then returned home. The family didn’t have any dogs of their own, but they mentioned that I had been hanging around. 16

local stories...local people...local pets

They said they didn’t mind feeding me, but it would be OK if the task force tried to help me. Believing I might be feral, the volunteers set out to humanely trap me. They knew if they couldn’t find a placement for me, I would be returned with a good supply of food and a phone number the family could call if I got hurt or sick. They said I deserved to receive a health check and to be neutered and vaccinated so I wouldn’t contribute to the pet overpopulation in the community. It’s not that the task force didn’t want to find a rescue that could offer me rehabilitation, the issue was that on this particular weekend there was very few spaces available for dogs, and even fewer for those that are feral. So the trap was set and the volunteers patiently waited. At first I wouldn’t go near it, but that didn’t deter them. They had to leave and return to the acreage a few times. Then finally I went inside and, SLAM, the trap door closed behind me. Boy was I scared but they covered the trap with a blanket to help calm me and then drove me straight to the clinic. Then two amazing things happened. It turns out that I wasn’t feral (just really scared). When they removed me from the trap, instead of being aggressive, I crawled into the lap of a volunteer. She comforted me, maybe for the first time in my life. Next, even though initially I didn’t look sick, I was diagnosed with parvo. Ironically, this turned out to be my lucky break. Dogs with injuries and illnesses get top priority for placement with rescues. I was taken in by SCARS. One of the people who helped trap me is a SCARS volunteer. She was so happy that I was safe and receiving medical care. She said I won her heart the moment she saw me. She said spotting my sad little eyes peering back at her as I tried to blend into the dense bush was like a depressing game of Where’s Waldo. I didn’t know those volunteers were there to save me. I’m so glad they didn’t give up. SCARS rushed me to the Westlock Veterinary Centre and that’s where I stayed until they knew I was going to be OK. Then they moved me to a foster home. Now I’m living the good life and the rest is history. I’m a lucky little pup. I’m so grateful to the task force and to SCARS for my second chance! Helping pups like me is what rescue is all about. No pup deserves to be alone and afraid with an uncertain future. My SCARS foster dad says I’m a laid back little guy who likes to go on walks. I’m crate trained and l have already started to learn some of my basic commands. I can’t wait to find my forever home. Now if I get to hang out on a couch, it will be in the company and care of a loving forever family. If you support SCARS, you will be helping pups like me! prm local stories...local people...local pets

The EHS Welcomes a New CEO: Miranda-Jordan Smith cleaning kennels and bathing puppies. Miranda’s professional journey began in England. Like countless other young people, she had decided to hop a plane and fly across the Atlantic without any real plan aside from finding work and seeing Europe. It didn’t take her long to land a job in operations management. Soon after, she was promoted and began managing the headquarters of a franchise firm of business centres in London – all at the ripe old age of 22.

By Jocelyn Wady Sitting across the desk from MirandaJordan Smith, the Edmonton Humane Society’s new CEO, I felt a buzz of energy as I watched her check her computer, sift through paperwork, and talk to me all in unison. Miranda describes herself as “always going.” It’s an apt description. “I like to have a lot of balls up in the air at once,” says Miranda, who graciously assists me with the interview by typing notes as she talks, supplementing my hurried scrawls. Miranda first came to the Edmonton Humane Society as a volunteer at the old shelter on 66th street. In those days, Miranda was a full-time university student who also worked a full-time job and used whatever spare time she had left to volunteer. She helped out at the EHS by

Miranda met her future husband in England, and the two would eventually return to Canada. After learning the ropes in operations management, she worked in events management and market research. She also attended university full time and completed a bachelor of arts degree (it was at this point that she started volunteering at the EHS). Miranda’s last stop before reaching the EHS was at an academic institution, where she worked for more than seven years across three different academic faculties in communications and business operations management. She left this position when she was hired as the EHS’s Director of Operations. In February 2014, Miranda moved from her role as Director of Operations into the role of acting CEO, and she achieved major results, demonstrating a welcomed

Edmonton Humane Society Good day, my name is Herbie. I am a gentle soul who needs the love of a patient friend to help me build confidence. I am about 1yr old and the hustle and bustle of shelter life is a bit overwhelming for me, so I am really looking forward to finding my forever home. If you have room in your life for a pretty & demure lady yours truly please come meet me!

I am a mature Wheaten Terrier named Blinky who is looking for a calm household to call my own. I’m great with kids, car rides, and basic commands, so I am perfect if you are searching for a best friend who knows his stuff! Not gonna lie – I really adore and get attached to my people. I have separation anxiety, so I’d do best in a home where I won’t be left alone long.

level of professionalism that has suited her well. She brought with her the firm belief that collaboration between internal and external stakeholders is a key to realizing an organization’s goals, and her vision for the shelter focuses on the EHS being a model of excellence in the management and advancement of animal welfare. In particular, Miranda believes educational programming will provide the foundation for lasting change, and she intends to build on educational tools and programs as part of her strategic plan. As for animals, Miranda has adopted a total of five pets from the Edmonton Humane Society, including a foster failure named Minnie, a happy yorkie who often accompanies her to the office. And remember how Miranda said she likes to have a lot on her plate at once? During all this time, she became a mother, completed a public relations diploma, a BA from the University of Alberta, an MBA from the University of Liverpool, and became a certified doula. Phew. Miranda’s appointment as CEO is a totem of the kinds of positive change that have been happening here at the EHS – change that has been embraced by all of us: staff, volunteers, the public, and our friends in animal welfare. It’s an exciting time for everyone. And we’re grateful to have Miranda leading the way. prm Hi, my name is Cyrus and I am a 5mth old Boa. I am still learning how to interact with people and will do best in a home experienced with snakes. I can be very nervous when handled, and may strike if pushed too far. To help me learn positive interactions, work on handling slowly. I promise to be a long-time companion for the next 20-30 years! Make sure you have room to grow with me, as I could reach up to 8 feet long when I am mature. I am looking forward to finding my forever family!

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection Hello! My name is Romeo. I have been living outside but now I am looking to settle down inside where I will be safe from street perils for the rest of my life. I am a very affectionate and personable boy who would be ok with other animals as companions.

Hi, I’m Wagner. I’m a sweet little guy that loves kids and other animals. I may be a little skittish at first but it doesn’t take me long to warm up. I’m a mature boy but don’t kid yourself. I may love to cuddle but I’m still very spry and I like to run around and play.

I am Christina. I am 1yr old and I’ll play with anything, and every thing, that is available to me. I will occupy myself for hours and then seek you out for attention. I love to be brushed and I enjoy hanging out in my cat tree. I am also ok with other cats and dogs.

Hi there, my name is Fodol and I just love to cuddle. I am a very affectionate boy and I love to stick close by. I also do fine with dogs. I really like to play with balls… with or without bells or rattles, if you roll the ball I will play with you for hours. Please give me a chance in your home.

Here’s looking at you! I’m Humphrey Bogart “the stuff that dreams are made of “. Despite my rough start I have a very sweet nature. I am looking for a loving new forever home that will understand how tough it has been and show me how sweet life can be.

My name is Rocket and I’m good with kids, cats & other dogs. I am already house & crate trained, and I travel well in the car. I’m a tad overweight but my foster mom and I have been working on a new physical fitness regime! Maybe we could trim up and walk together?

I am Skittles. I am about 1yr old and I am very fond of curling up beside you for affection. I will follow you around the house waiting for more rubs and talk to you the whole time. I’m not crazy about other cats and I prefer to stay indoors safe and sound. I’m awesome please ask to meet me!

I’m Wyatt. I may technically be a senior but I’m in great physical shape! I’ve also just been to the dentist where I had a full dental cleaning and a few extractions. I am a very sweet, affectionate & gentle boy who needs a loving indoor home with people who will love me forever.

Sundance Canine Rescue Society My name is Abby and I am a fun loving Shepherd X. I love squeaky toys and really enjoy playing with other dogs and kids. I know some of my basic commands and I am already kennel & house trained, but I need a little work on my leash manners. I am a happy & goofy little character that is not yet 1yr old.

My name is Ted and I am a loving but shy boy. I am looking for a quiet & calm home where I can get lots of cuddles and playtime. I can get overwhelmed with younger kids but I really like to hang out with other dogs and cats. I like to go for walks and I listen very well. I am also housebroken and I play nicely with everyone.

Rescue And Sanctuary for Threatened Animals My name is Gracie and I have been looking for a new home for a long time. I am a complete sweetheart but I’m very shy due to lack of human contact for the majority of my life. I am 4yrs old and I’m working on losing a little weight. I am spayed, up to date on my shots, and I have also had my hooves trimmed. I need a patient loving human, and maybe another pig, for both company and to help me continue to come out of my shell. I will remain at the sanctuary until the right family comes along but I do get lonely and would like very much to be accepted into someone’s heart & home.

Meika’s Birdhouse Rescue I am a 15yr young Timneh African Grey Parrot named Larry. I do speak but not often, and only when I want to. I don’t like women and children, so it would be ideal to find a home with a single man. I am a hands-off kind of bird that really just likes to have company to hang out with and watch TV.

I don’t mind being handled and I am quiet enough to live in an apartment. I’m a very sweet bird, I even went to daycare to show off for the kids!

I’m Peeper. I am a very, very, lucky male Zebra Finch. I was lost out in the great outdoors which seemed like a lot of fun at first… but the wild birds were not nice to me and there were cats out there too! I found a feeder that was placed in a cage outside and soon a kind lady brought me safely back in. Now all I need is a home.

Pound Rescue Hello my friends, My name is Neon. I don’t want to sound too presumptuous but everyone I meet is my friend, or quickly becomes one anyway. I love everyone; cats, dogs & people, especially the kids! I am young, handsome and I have a superb personality… they say I have it all. Unfortunately, that includes diabetes so I need a small insulin injection every day. It does not make me different from anyone else, maybe even better because I am so accepting. Yet it seems for exactly this reason that no one accepts me. I dream of a loving home where diabetes is ok, maybe with a little girl or boy who also has diabetes. I could show them that needles are nothing to be afraid of because I do not mind them at all. I can’t wait to cuddle up together and share all of our hopes and dreams. I am determined to live a healthy, happy and long life and I want my loved ones to do the same. In many years, when my little human is grown, I want to be remembered as the beloved cat of their happy childhood who was just like any other cat, except I needed insulin shots. Animals and humans are here together so we can help each other. Yours truly and forever, Neon

My name is Nazhoni, but I’m Naz to my friends. I was born at Rescue 100 so don’t you think it’s time I had a home to call my own? I’m a beauty with personality to spare. Maybe we should meet? Before you know it, we’ll be in love, because I’m just too cute to resist! I’m still waiting! Whoever takes me home is going to be one lucky family. My name is Sofia and I’m not sure why I’m still here… maybe it’s because I am a little shy, but I’m really starting to love people and I’m learning to trust. I am still young and I have so much potential. I quickly became a favorite of all of the volunteers here and I bet I could be your favorite too. Please call!

Howdy! My name is Jalen and I am a super sweet and very handsome boy. I am about 2yrs old and I seem to have no medical issues so all I need now is a home. Please consider giving a handsome devil like me a chance -I promise you won’t be sorry! Call about us today, we are both being housed and are available to view in the Edmonton area. My name is Milo and I was a mess when I was first rescued in Red Deer. I was very skinny (and hungry!!!) and my hair was so matted that they had to shave me. I also had frost bite damage on my tail and ear mites, but those mites are long gone now and my tail has been amputated. I am now in good health and anxiously awaiting my new forever home.

ARTS Senior Animal Rescue

My name is Sophie! I am a 6 yr old Toy poodle. I am a wee little gal at only 6lbs. I get along with just about everyone and everything. My foster home has older kids, cats and other dogs that I love. They think I belonged to a puppy mill in the past but I am not having any more puppies! I have a great little temperament but I like it best when my person is home with me. I can’t wait to find my forever home.

My name is Chingu and this blonde guy is my good buddy, Milo. I am 10yrs old and Milo is 6yrs old. I am with ARTS Seniors but they let Milo come too even though he is not a senior yet. Everyone tells us we are such great boys. We are well behaved, trained and very near perfect. Our owner was so sad to let us go and we miss him but we are excited to find our new forever homes. We can be adopted out seperately. Love and Hugs, Chingu and Milo

My name is Nyla and I am a 10yr old Collie/Pitty X. ARTS Seniors believes I have had many litters of pups in my life but I won’t be having any more. My family dropped me off at a shelter but I am not sure why they would do that. I am good with most dogs but can be protective of my people. I have a very loving and loyal personality. It is my biggest wish to be able to belong to a family that will take care of me and love me for who I am. If you think that might be you, be sure to give ARTS Seniors a call and come meet me.

Hi! My name is Mikey! I am a 14yr old Terrier/Pug X. ARTS Seniors has me in their weight loss program and I am doing really well. I came from the NWT after my owner had to surrender me due to problems with housing. I had never known anyone else in my life so I was really, really scared. Thanks to my foster home I am losing weight and I’m settling in well. I live with lots of other dogs and really like to play! I am looking for a great retirement home that will take care of me in my older years.

My name is Sima and I came in to ARTS Seniors with my friend Matilda. I am a 15yr old girl with gorgeous blue eyes. I am a brave cat and was the first to venture out of hiding when we first arrived at our foster home. I let everyone know I was out and about! I have a precocious attitude but I will get along with the other cat and dog friends who live here. It was hard to leave my home of 15yrs but I am settling into foster care now. I really hope to find my retirement home and live the relaxed life I so crave.

I am beautiful Matilda but you can call me ‘Tilda for short. I am a 15yr old gentle little female calico cat. Sima and I came into ARTS Seniors together. I am a little on the shy side but it took me less than a week to settle in at my new foster home. I like to sit with you for endless snuggles and I am content to sit and stare out the window at all the interesting things outside. I would like a warm and cozy retirement home where I can purr to my special person to keep them happy. Please consider us older cats. We really are very special.

OSCAR By Liz Pankhurst - GEARS

O

n July 24, GEARS was alerted by Animal Rescue & Outreach Society of a puppy that had been hit by a car in a rural community. Both of his back legs were broken. AROS was closed to intakes, so we were asked if we could help. If no rescue group could take him in, he would be euthanized. Seeing his little face and imagining all the pain he was in, we knew what we had to do. We named the pup Oscar, and transferred him to Edmonton South Animal Hospital for the surgery he desperately needed. It is believed that he was hit 1-2 weeks prior to coming into care. Due to the age of the injury, it was not an easy fix. One leg had a broken femur and the other had the break in the lower leg. Since he is young, the unbroken bones have continued to grow, resulting in his legs being slightly different lengths. Hopefully now that he has had surgery 24

pet rescue magazine

it will even itself out, but we probably won’t know until he is fully grown. At only 4 months old, he has been through so much and still has a long way to go, but he is very determined. Just days after surgery, he can already walk short distances! Oscar is the sweetest puppy, all you have to do is walk in the room and his eyes light up and his tail starts to wag. He loves to give kisses and enjoys cuddling. We are so grateful to AROS for contacting us about Oscar. This is why it is so important for rescue groups to work together. We may not all run the same way, or have the same policies and procedures, but we’re all in it to save the lives of animals. Working with each other results in even more lives saved and offers animals like Oscar, a second chance at life. prm

Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society Hello… it’s me again, Charlotte. Can you believe I haven’t been adopted yet? Neither can anyone here! I love kids, I like dogs, and I adore people. I’m also a cuddly young girl with the loudest purr. I’ll continue to wait patiently, but I sure would love to be adopted soon.

I’m a very happy-go-lucky 4yr old Pit Bull X named Binx. I am a friendly girl who gets along with cats and other dogs. I like meeting new people, especially when they give me belly rubs. I like to go on adventures when able, also I will need a secure yard!

The name’s Daisy! I’m 2yrs old and I really enjoy playing with the dogs in my foster home. I can be a little reactive with other dogs when I’m on leash but my foster mom is working with me and I am improving. I’m a smart girl who is very treat motivated.

Hey there, I’m Priya. I’m a big girl with a heart of gold. I love to be loved and I love to give love. I love cats, dogs, kids… you name it I love em all! I also really enjoy my doggy pool. I am an active girl who can’t wait to have fun with you. Please call about me today.

My name’s Ruby and I am a beautiful 6yr old girl. I get along with some dogs and cats, but I prefer to be the center of attention and would do best as the only animal in the house. I like to play but I’m content to just sit and cuddle. We call GEARS we could be purrfect together.

Barrhead Animal Rescue Society

Hello, my name is Rico and I am a 2yr old Shepherd X. I am a ball of energy that’s eager to learn and looking for an active family. I am very smart, well behaved, gentle & loving. I am a bit unsure when meeting men at first but I do warm up quickly.

I’m Barney and I am 2yrs old. I am very friendly and always seek out affection. It’s hard to take good photos of me because, if I see you coming, I will and instantly start purring and rolling around for a good belly rub. I currently live with two other cats.

I’m Ellie! I am 2yrs old and I used to be a scaredy cat, but I’m becoming more confident & playful. I’ve grown fond of my friend, Pretty Girl, and we would love to find a home together. I am a very gentle girl who needs a quiet & loving home.

I’m a 2yr old gal with a unique personality named Sirah. I require a home that will spend time playing with me everyday - I am very smart and I need activity to be happy. I have extra toes, and might have a bit of Bengal in me. I would like to be the only cat in the house.

My name is Callie and I am 3yrs old. I’ve always been on my own but now I’m ready to settle down with a real family. I am very easy going and once I know you, I am all purrs and belly rubs! I would love a family who understands my needs.

I’m Shyloh. I was surrendered at the Blood Tribe Spay & Neuter Clinic in Southern Alberta. I am a 6-8 yr old Shepherd X and have had a little dental surgery but I’m good as new now. I am good with kids and I do well with other dogs.

I’m Bonita! I am about 2yrs old and I seem to enjoy peace and quiet however, come bed time, I am the first one to my foster mom’s room for some bedtime snuggles. I am good with dogs but do take a bit of time to warm up to other cats. I LOVE to play with toys.

Underdogs Rescue

Everyone calls me Boomer and they tell me I am about 1yr old. I am a gorgeous Pit Bull X with lots of enthusiasm for everything. Loud and proud, jump around!! Ok so my foster mom doesn’t appreciate my enthusiasm, or maybe it’s just the loud, jump around stuff? I have done well with most dogs but large male dogs make me go into a bit of a “small man syndrome”. I want to ensure they know I’m a big boy too! I lived with a few cats but they need to be dog savvy, if they run I chase. It’s a game, right? I am a smart little dude and know many basic commands but I need someone who understands that the pitty in me gets excited. I travel in the car like a champ, and I have been doing well in the kennel. At home I am really chill, I love cuddling with my people. I love kids, and I’m so friendly I can’t help but wag my tail REALLY hard! Watch out people, I’m a happy boy!!!

I am a 2yr old Red Doberman X named Clifford. In those movies where you see a brave warrior, rushing the front lines, sword in hand, yelling (I’m thinking Braveheart here) …yah, that’s not me. I’m in the back, hoping no one will see when I turtle and hide. I look brave & strong on the outside but really I’m a big loving marshmallow! I don’t like to be alone, need a night light and it does take me some time to handle change.

Hello folks! My name is Arya and I am a 4yr old American Bull Dog. Sometimes people think I’m a boy; I let them think what they want! I am a rough and tumble girl that is stubborn and brave. If you watch Game of Thrones you know how I got my name. I am a large girl at 85 lbs and I know it. I’m super friendly with people, have great house manners and I love cuddles… in fact I’m a bit of a couch potato. I also LOVE CAR RIDES and when I know people are getting ready to leave I’m often called Ayra Under Foot! I am a beautiful Pit Bull X named Nellie. I am about 2.5yrs old and they describe me as a soft sweet & curious girl that can be a bit shy. Like a sweet southern (Alberta) girl I prefer other calm polite dogs. I walk well on leash, have great manners, and I am great with cats; although a little complex they don’t bother me. I am super gentle, loving and appropriate with kids. I often follow them around… did you know they drop food? A LOT OF FOOD!?!

Hansel & Gretel By Virginia Marando

I

Hansel & Gretel when first rescued

t was one of those nights where the summer rain pelted the pavement. Why a mother cat would choose to move her babies is not known but she did. As a result of the move she left two babies on a crumpled up tarp. When they were found they were close to death, the tarp had not provided shelter but had served to collect water in its shallow gullies that submerged part of the kittens’ bodies. At a day or two old, their umbilical cords still attached they were found wet and hypothermic. Unable to regulate their own body temperature, the fact the two bedraggled kittens survived that night in their state of oblivion was nothing short of a miracle.

Hansel & Gretel (right) shortly before Gretel died 28

pet rescue magazine

There are people in this world that would choose to ignore their plight and allow them to die, but then there are those who display their love and compassion for other creatures. It was such a couple who noticed the kittens and came to their aid. By the time Little Cats August/September 2014

Lost took them into their nursery the following day, they had been warmed, revived and fed milk replacer. They were not out of danger but were on the road to recovery - or so we thought. The bigger of the two kittens was a boy and we named him Hansel, the smaller a girl we aptly called Gretel. At first glance Gretel appeared to be a Manx kitten but it became obvious she was dealing with a deformity. Signs of a tiny stubby tail protruding from her lower back was evident. In the weeks to come, Gretel did not progress at the pace Hansel did and we knew that she was dealing with some physiological challenges. Nevertheless, Hansel did not leave his sister behind. He was always by her side to nurture and comfort her. It’s witnessing a growing bond between siblings of another species that grounds ones understanding of their worth in our world. local stories...local people...local pets

We knew Gretel’s time with us may not be long and while she enjoyed a quality of life we allowed her the time to experience it. However, on July 25, 2014 Gretel spent the evening happily playing with her brother but at 4:30 a.m. the following morning she chose her time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. She felt no pain and left this world warm, dry and sleeping in the arms of her foster mom who loved her. Hansel and Gretel’s story is not a fairytale with a happy ending but that holds true for many feral kittens born on the streets. Many of our free-roaming community adult cats like Hansel and Gretel’s mother are regarded as nothing but a nuisance and many are literally hated by people to the point it is of no consequence or guilt to end their lives to solve the issue of cat overpopulation. We as a community can change our focus, instead of destroying these poor animals we can

local stories...local people...local pets

empower logic and compassion to engage positive change just as the couple did who first rescued Hansel and Gretel. The willingness to feel compassion towards these animals not only impacts our environment and our own lives but the lives of others too. At LCL our cats teach us lessons about ourselves everyday and we’re sure that any cat owners reading this can say the same. By spaying and neutering our free-roaming cats we will prevent future generations like Hansel and Gretel being born to the streets. While the willingness to share our community with existing cats instead of destroying them will eventually help instill ethics back into a society that has become so focused on “what’s in it for me”. Compassion, cooperation and concern - is it really too much to ask when the outcome will save lives. prm
