Cover Model: My name is Nashira, it means fortunate one. I was hit by a vehicle and left in a parking lot. When SCARS heard, a couple of volunteers drove out to get me and took me right to the vet. Within a couple days another volunteer drove me to Calgary for surgery…then another volunteer picked me up and brought me back to an Edmonton foster home. I am so lucky that there are so many kind, helpful people in the world. I had a fracture of the right femoral neck and fracture of the right ilium. I am not sure what all of those are, but they sure hurt! My expected recovery to walk normally is 8wks. When I am spayed I will also have to have a metal wrench removed from my stomach…amazing what shows up in those x-rays! Thanks again to the clinics for all of their wonderful medical care, to the people that made it possible for me to get to all my appointments, and to my foster home that is taking such amazing care of me! You are all truly my Guardian Angels. Love and Licks!

On December 1st, hours before going to press, we received word that sweet little Nashira was fighting for her life. She has the distemper virus which is usually terminal. After all she has faced in her short life it is heartbreaking to think a simple vaccination could have spared her this fight. At this point, we are unsure if Nashira will recover. Please keep this little angel in your heart and prayers and remind everyone you know of the importance of vaccinations.

Happy Holidays Volunteering in rescue, we used to believe our lives had “gone to the dogs.” Now, with a chuckle, we know with publishing the magazine it actually has gone to “the dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets” and who knows maybe even fish in the future! 2008 has been a hectic year, but nothing could please us more than the thought of all the fuzzy faces enjoying this season of love and goodwill in their new permanent homes. In the 2007 Holiday edition, we were able to put small “thumbnail” prints of the animals that had been adopted that year, but this year there are way too many. That leads us to say thank you to all those proud new parents that saw the true potential in the rescues. We know that taking the plunge and adding to your family is a big commitment. However, when those big grateful eyes stare back at you with wonderment and affection, how can you not know you made the right decision? We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers. Without their support we couldn’t bring you picture perfect (or is that pawfect?) pets with their zany write-ups to make you laugh while they tug at your heart strings. “Puppies chase kittens, kittens chase mice. Have you been naughty, or have you been nice?” These words accompany delightful colour photographs of kittens and puppies and even a little mouse all posing for the camera looking as cute as can be. This young children’s board book contains a wonderful photo collection of furry animals all decked out in hats, scarves, santa suits, and angel’s wings depicting the joy of the Christmas season. While the pictures in this book will melt any scrooge’s heart, the text is heavy like a lump of coal. Now granted the audience for this board book is clearly for toddlers, but even they like a little more rhyming and order to their stories than what is presented here. The story opens with a kitten waiting for Santa, and continues on with descriptions depicting getting ready for Christmas. However, halfway through the book the text changes to describe the photographs, leaving the story behind. This lack of flow is very odd and I found the rest of the book unsatisfying. Now toddlers might not care very much about the words, but if it becomes their favourite book and you end up reading it one hundred times, you’ll certainly wish the story was more engaging!
Sweet, petite, and gorgeous to look at, that’s me in a nut shell! My name is Gwenny and I have a very loving personality. I am great with everyone so far. I am about 2yrs old and seem to be a Doberman X. I stay close to my people and learn quickly. Am I your kinda girl? Nedley Du Right is what they call me, and I aim to please! I seem to be a 5yr old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever…that’s a mouthful! I am great with people, kids and dogs…but I am not so keen on the cats (sorry). I keep giving a bad first impression because I bounce around too much. The thing is that if you pay close attention I never bounce on you (just around you), and never over the fence (just behind it). I love my people very much and I am house trained. My foster mom loves the cute way I stomp my feet when I wait for her.
Well I am a conundrum! I could perhaps be a dwarfed Elk Hound, maybe a Sheba Inu X, or perhaps a Corgi “designer dog” of sorts. Who knows, Who cares? What does matter is that I am cute, small and great with kids, dogs, and cats. What more do you need to know? Just in case here are a few more details. My name is Quigby and I am a 1.5yr old boy who is crate trained and loves to snuggle. That’s me, Soda POP! I have spring loaded feet and absolutely love people, kids, cats, and other dogs. I am squirrel crazy and will spend many minutes at the bottom of the tree telling the squirrel to take the plunge. Although they never listen I remain optimistic. Life has been hard for a young girl only a year old. I was scared, skinny and got dumped out on my own. I sure am glad I ended up here! What other good things could happen to this Shepherd/Hound X girl? Maybe I will even get a new home of my own!!!
I can’t believe my eyes, I am so excited to be here! My name is Sue and thanks to the combined efforts of rescue groups us dogs sometimes find ourselves transferred to help accommodate more rescues and save more lives. I came from SCARS. I am a sweet, gentle girl and I love other dogs, kids, and cats. I am 1.5yrs old, listen well, stay close, and I am house trained. I am always a ray of sunshine and forever smiling.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) I am a Collie X, about 1yr old, named Arthur. I seem to be good off leash as I like to stay close. I love to get attention and I am pretty good with the resident dogs here. My house training is coming along, and I am learning that the crate is not a terrible place. I am not totally convinced of that quite yet! I am about 50lbs and just an all around nice guy. Hmmm, do you like cats? Can’t say that I do. So if your home is feline free, come and get me!!! “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me…just find me some people to love forever, and I’ll be the best dog I can be!” My name is Keko and I am a really nice boy. Although a little shy at first, I love people, get along with cats and I am really good with kids. I am crate trained, and do well in the house, but prefer not to be left outside alone. I just get so lonely and can’t help but express myself vocally. I can be a bit dominant with other dogs, I think it’s because I want to have my people all to myself. When I was rescued it was discovered I had been shot in the leg. Unfortunately the damage was too extensive and my leg could not be saved. Despite having been hit by a car some time ago sustaining a broken front leg, being attacked by a bear, and also shot in the leg, I am an all around lovebug. It turns out my biggest problem was the injury on my wrist from when I was attacked by a bear back in September in front of my previous owners. I had a pretty major surgery to take away the constant pain, while still saving my leg. The wonderful Dr. Sereda at the Edmonton Veterinarian’s Emergency Clinic did a procedure that will hopefully fuse my wrist joint, and I now sport a steel plate. I am only about 2yrs old, and the sweetest boy you could ever meet. I get along great with the other dogs & kids in my foster home, and even with the pain I still get frisky and like to play. I have a couple of broken teeth to be taken care of (that bear was really mean!), but I am still up to meeting potential families! My total recovery will take about 3 months and I will still walk with a limp, but the pain will be gone. Thank you everyone for giving me a true Second Chance!
Hello! I am a very large, young, Husky X named Norm. I love people and I am ok with most dogs. I think a home with older kids is best since I can play a little rough. Whenever I am happy (which is a lot) I do a little song and dance, it’s my way of showing you how wonderful I think life is. Oh, I almost forgot -I LOVE truck rides! Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) I’m a beautiful boy around 6 months of age. I was found, months ago, wandering in the countryside. I am so very grateful that I was rescued. I’m extremely friendly, very playful and I love toys and people. I can’t wait for you to come and take me home. “Jingle bells, Jingle bells, Jingle all the way…oh what fun, it will be, on my adoption day-Hey!” I just came from the pound and I am doing my best to adjust to my new accommodations. I am very shy and timid in nature so I would do best in a quiet home, preferably as the only pet. I’m an especially gentle and loving girl looking for a loving lap to curl up on soon. Max is what they call me. I am 5yrs old, tall, and have an inquisitive nature. I am really hoping my special family notices me soon as this will be my second Christmas with SNAP. Hi my name is George and I have been a stray for over 3 years. My foster mom fed me, befriended me and was able to have me neutered. I have been living in her yard and have a cozy chair in her greenhouse, but I also sleep under the steps in a makeshift shelter. Just this last month I have warmed up to my foster mom and I let her pick me up, rub my belly and tweek my frost bitten little ears. I even surprised myself, it feels good to have some love so I must have had a home long ago. I’m an outdoor cat but it sure would be nice to have my own space in a barn or garage (heated in a perfect world!). If you, or someone you know, could give me a nice place to stay before it gets too cold I would be so grateful.

I am full of life and love pretty much everything and everyone. I came from a house where I got along with cats and six other dogs. I am adventurous and love investigating stuff with my nose. Hinton & District SPCA I am a 10 month old Coonhound possibly crossed with some yellow Lab, but only my mother knows for sure. Everyone calls me Squirt. I have not had much training so I am not very good on leash yet but I am learning. I love to go to the local off leash area and play with my sister Zyra. I am pretty good at coming to my name, but I have trouble sitting still for a picture! All I want for Christmas is a forever home where I will be loved and cared for! I was found stuck in a tree and they think I went without food and water for a couple of days because when I was saved by animal control I was lethargic and very dehydrated. Are you wondering why I didn’t just climb down the tree since I am a cat? Well the branch that I was stuck in was hanging over a yard with a great big dog. Now you know why! Bunny –I love my name! Could it be that I am cute like a bunny rabbit? I am a 1yr old Pitt Bull/ Rotti X, with some doggie socialization issues. I growl when I meet new dogs but only until I know that they are friendly. I love to have fun off leash in safely confined areas. My name is Elly and I am a senior dog who came in severely matted. I have had several baths and haircuts though, and now I am exceptionally cute (and clean)! Sadly I have had bad eye infections that have left me blind. I will need eye medications for the rest of my life, an approximate cost of $80.00 per month –but I am worth it! In new environments I am quite shy, but once I know my way around watch out! I
grew up in a place where country life and city life blended together into one mess of a slow moving town. There wasn’t much to occupy my time but running around outside and finding something to keep me out of trouble. For me, it was always some critter I found that I had to save or that just plain needed me. I found baby birds that I claimed couldn’t fly and, of course, I had to take care of. I found kittens that I would swear up and down to my dad were lost and needed a home. There were puppies with injured legs, turtles that lost their way and rabbits that someone was surely going to shoot and eat if I didn’t take them in as my own. From the moment I discovered the freedom of the outdoors, my parents grew quite accustomed to me racing through the front door – out of breath and bursting with excitement – only to tell them of my latest creature that needed rescuing. And of course, after begging and pleading, my dad would follow me back to my little animal and we would figure out what to do next. I rescued a hawk, which my cat almost got the best of and spent countless hours feeding two baby doves whose nest blew down in a storm. The hawk made it just fine, but the doves were too young and broke my heart. But sooner or later, the little country bumpkin that was myself, with skinned knees and tomboy clothes, grew up. I had my own pets to fuss over and busied myself with other adventures. But I was always ready for a rescue when some creature came calling. I just didn’t go looking any more. I made it off to college and got out of my slow moving little town. I consumed myself with studying and developed a busy lifestyle that caused for long days and trying to keep on schedule. But the first summer I was home, I found my childhood ways thrown right back at me, and I became the ten-year-old girl racing to tell her dad what animal needed rescuing. As part of my usual weekend habits, I was sitting in the drivelocal stories...local people...local pets
thru with my best friend, Amy, at a local coffee shop growing more and more frustrated at how long our coffee seemed to be taking. We chatted about our days and watched as the red and orange streaked sky slowly went down in the distance and gave the city a warm glow as only Texas skies can. We watched for a moment longer and then noticed a flying-v of geese soar over the street just as we were about to grab our drinks. “Something just landed in front of your car,” Amy yelled a moment later, a little shocked at what she had just seen. I was grabbing our coffee and looked over just in time to see a panting, Canadian goose hobble to the curb right in front of my blue Honda civic and hide in the crevice of my tire and the road. Without hesitating, we jumped out of the car. And there, with spit flinging from its mouth and a long pink tongue to the side of its black, sleek beak, was a full grown Canadian goose gasping for air. Its head was slumped over and it perched on the ground with both wings tucked tight to his side. “What do you think is wrong with him?” Amy asked. “I think he’s sick,” I answered not really knowing what was wrong, but immediately getting out the phone to call my dad. I knew I would need his help for this. “Dad, there is a Canadian goose by my car and he looks hurt. I can’t leave it, will you please come up here,” I pleaded. My dad was not unfamiliar with my pleas to come help me save something, so his response was one I expected. “Leave the goose alone, Kate. I am sure he’s fine,” he said. I hung up the phone in frustration, not surprised at his response, and planned my next move. After all, it wasn’t the first time I had ignored my dads’ warnings to let Mother Nature be. The goose continued to pant but when I reached out a hand to see how tame he was, he hissed and shook his long neck at me in defense. Then, he mustered up the energy to get on his two shaky legs and moved from the side of my car to underneath. By this time I was stopping the drive through from moving and a crowd had gathered. “Did you hit the bird?” one lady yelled from her drivers seat window. “Get some water, or bread, this girl hit a bird and he’s hurt!” the barista ordered from the coffee shop window. “I didn’t hit him, he flew down and walked under the car,” I said slightly frustrated with the crowd and the current situation at hand. I immediately called my dad back. This time, he came. It wasn’t a far drive and not five minutes later, my dad pulled up in his green pick-up with my mom in the drivers seat, gardening gloves on and a cardboard box already in hand. He knelt down and looked under the car. He surveyed the situation like rescuing a goose was an every day occurrence. He just had to figure out the best way to successfully pull off this one. The crowd stood by and watched, unsure of what the people standing by the goose with a box and gloves were about to do. In one swift gesture, my dad cupped the goose from the bottom and secured its neck, ordered my mom to open the box and he gently placed the frightened but surprisingly calm animal in the box. Without hesitation, my mom and dad hurried to the truck with box and goose in hand, and told us to follow them. Amy and I jumped into my car and followed them to our next destination. Cont. Page 12

A quick drive later, feeling pride that my dad came to the rescue and thrilled to have found this creature who needed me, we arrived at the lake down the street from my house. He carried the box and calmly set it down at the bank of the water. Slowly but surely, the frightened goose emerged from the tattered UPS box. He hobbled to the water – still dazed and frightened. He stood at the very tip for a moment and took a drink of water. The sun was going down and in the distance ducks and geese were beginning to land on the rippling water for the night. I saw a flock of Canadian geese glide onto the rippling, silver coated lake and gracefully land. The goose took his time, but eventually, in a swift bound, swam off into the water. My dad explained that he must of have just been dehydrated and fell back from his flock. So there we stood for a good while and watched the goose rejoin the others. I smiled at my parents and felt a sense of relief that the goose was ok and remembered all the times in my childhood when moments like this had come into my life. Sometimes everyone just needs a little help to get where they are going, even the squirrels that get hurt and Canadian geese that get thrown off course. We just have to make sure there is someone to help when that moment comes. I smiled at my dad and thanked him for helping me, just like he had always done. He looked over at my mom, and grinned. “I went and found the box and gloves the first time you called,� he said laughing.

Our family does dog rescue with Second Chance Animal Rescue Society and we would nominate our Mom - Debbie Kardash - for being so involved with the dogs and still managing to get us to school on time! Being a foster home can be one of the most amazing things yet it can be really sad too. We have seen puppies being born and dogs being put down, dogs in life threatening situations and many that get adopted
If you met our Mom you would know that after 15min. of talking to her she is an animal person and is very passionate about what she does. Our Mom would never change a thing that she does every day and we are sooo proud of her. We have been a foster home for SCARS for about 2 years and love every dog that comes through our home. Mom is a foster home manager which means that she screens all the calls of her foster homes dogs, she also makes sure that every dog has what they need, she takes about 20-30 hours per week to care for the dogs, and out of everything she still gets us where we need to be. Ranger is the name and learning is my game! I am a 7 month old, Collie X and weigh in around 60lbs. I am an extremely affectionate and sweet natured puppy. I am already potty trained, know how to sit, ride well in the car, and go to doggy daycare everyday to practice my socializing skills. My foster mom works hard with me every day and I have even done some work with a Certified Education Trainer! I am smart, eager to please and learn very quickly.
