Hello! My name is Alice and I already have a great home but my two four legged friends here are searching for loving families of their own. This is my gal pal Daisy and she is a very sweet pitty puppy. She gets pretty excited cause she is still a puppy but after she checks you out she is all smiles and wags. Welcome to PRM! Happy Thanksgiving! What a beautiful fall, the off leash parks have been packed with smiling faces and wagging tails! Pets are such a wonderful blessing to so many of us with their nearly universal unconditional love, acceptance and companionship. And so much more!!! Dogs for instance also have jobs in many cases (Guide Dogs, Pet Therapy, Herding, etc.) and they are naturally protective of their pack members. Rescues are certainly no exception. The gratitude & devotion of a rescue animal that has seen hard times is not measurable and to most pet lovers is priceless. On page 6 there is a heart warming story about a wonderful rescue dog named Buddy. He was initially rescued & adopted by his new owner through the Hinton & District SPCA but as the story will tell you Buddy actually ended up being the hero rescuing his owner from a mother Grizzly! This is an amazing example of what rescued pets are all about. For those rescue organizations in the Edmonton area please check out page 16 where you will find information on a new grant offered by the City of Edmonton for animal rescue. It is so nice to see everyone working together, and from the rescue standpoint we couldn’t be happier! Facebook! The PRM Team

Babylon’s Ark: The Incredible Wartime Rescue of the Baghdad Zoo by: Lawrence Anthony & Graham Spence
At the onset of the Iraq war the world’s focus was on a grisly battle between men, unnecessary human suffering andthe destruction of a nation; but the plight of Baghdad’s animals remained in shadows. Family pets were abandoned and wandered the war-torn streets desperate to survive, farms were evacuated leaving animals confined and helpless, and the exotic animals of the Baghdad Zoo were deserted and defenseless to the assault on their city. Hope seemed fleeting for these animals until Conservationist Lawrence Anthony took action. In early 2003 Anthony left his home in South Africa and became the first civilian to gain military access into Iraq, traveling unarmed and unescorted to the violent heart of Baghdad. Here he found the largest zoo in the Middle East; severely damaged, looted by desperate civilians, and hundreds of animals killed or missing. Only the zoo Veterinarian and two brave staff remained to care for the animals. Babylon’s Ark delves into the dark shadows of a war torn nation and the courageous rescue of those who could not call out for help. Anthony leads readers through the rubble of Baghdad, vividly describing his interactions with US 4

troops, raiding bombed palaces and ruined hotels for food and supplies for the animals and staff, rescuing lions, cheetah’s and ostriches from Uday Hussein’s palace, and rescuing seventeen of Saddam Hussein’s prized Arabian horses from dangerous armed thieves. Readers will find themselves on an emotional journey alongside Anthony and a handful of devoted Iraqi and American animal lovers as they fight to protect the animals that remain, and will rejoice at their success as the Baghdad Zoo is rebuilt and re-opened at the close of the war. Rescue 100 My name is Thyme and I am a tall Arabian gelding who came to Rescue 100 in May 2011. Although my name is spelled like the spice, I am named after the hourglass shape on my nose. My previous owner stated I was saddle trained, but so far I’ve only shown that I am halter trained and can pick up my front feet. I’m still pretty shy & cautious so either way I’ll likely need a refresher on things. I am quite curious about people and like to come up and check things out. I also call out a lot from the field just to say “Hi”!

SAVE A DOG AT THE S.P.C.A.
And Someday He May Save You!

uddy is a Lab Rottweiler cross and is going to be 12 years old in 2011. We adopted buddy from the Hinton S.P.C.A. in the year 2000 when he was a year and a half old. I work in forestry and Buddy has accompanied me to the field / woods / mountains all his life. I most likely owe my life to Buddy.
On June 03, 2010 while working 90 Km. north of Hinton by the Berland River I encountered a sow grizzly with two small cubs. She decided I was too close Morris, Jodi and Buddy (20 meters) and attacked. In 2 seconds she was on me. I put my arms up, took 2 meters. I now have my bear spray out and steps back and tripped on a log, falling to the ready. The bear stops, turns around, and ground. I then swung my foot at her nose charges me for the third time. Just as I’m and she grabbed my boot in her mouth. I felt about to fire off the bear spray she stops, huge pressure as she bit through my boot about 4 meters away, stares at me, and then and into my foot. In another 2 seconds Budruns off in the direction she had sent the dy my faithful bush dog arrives on the scene. cubs. The whole encounter lasted approx. The bear releases me and chases Buddy 20 seconds. I was very, very lucky. My only down a hill for about 15 meters. Buddy and bear do believe that the bear hadn’t made contact with Buddy. We a quick dance and the bear then runs to our left about 15 were both very, very lucky. prm
Hinton & District SPCA My name is Oreo and I am an affectionate special needs kitty. I am allergic to a preservative in most cat foods but I do okay on Origin food or raw diets. I also have a knee cap that moves - it’s called a luxating patella. So I am not supposed to jump and I am currently on bed rest – yuk!

Grande Prairie SPCA I’m not a fox or a hound dog but my name is Copper. I was born here on April 2...but everyone else in my litter has gone on to find great homes. I just know someone special is out there – maybe it is you? I am a very sweet little girl who loves EVERYONE.
I’m Felix the cat. I am 1.5yrs old and I’m here because my previous owners were no longer able to look after me. I am a social guy and I like other cats. I’m also very playful & cuddly. Chasing the laser pointer is pretty awesome but my favourite thing is belly rubs.

Spay Neuter Action Program I came from the pound with an abscess that required vet care. My name is Ben and I am very affectionate. My name is Darla. I have been with SCARS for some time, but not because I have anything wrong with me. I’m a large girl, but I’m not sure on my breed. I love people and I am great on and off leash. I especially love going for quad rides, though I prefer the shorter ones to the longer ones. I love playing with my buddy Randy, however I can be a little picky on what dogs I call my friends. I’m about 2 - 3yrs old. I listen very well to my foster mom. I’m a beautiful Husky named Meela. What was thought to be a wound on my side was actually a tumour that had been left untreated but it has since been removed. I am very sweet and just want to be close to my person at all times. I am crate trained and walk like a dream on leash. I also seem to be ok with other dogs, though sometimes they make me nervous. I am very thin but we are working on that!

Hope Heels Service Dog Team

F
or service dog trainer Maigen who struggles with anxiety, Hope Heels. She is training her service dog candidate “Haylie” to help mitigate her disability through cued behaviors, observation skills and presence. Maigen is training Haylie to become her Psychiatric Service Dog. Maigen and Haylie are a team with the Hope Heels Service Dog Team Building Institute, a charity that helps people with mental health disabilities to train their own service dog. “These people and these dogs come from all walks of life, and they are really making a difference in each other’s lives”, Says Kristine Aanderson, Executive Director at Hope Heels. “Both of our current service dogs were dogs that had other lives before they became service dog candidates with us.”

After the rescue group has identified a possible candidate, they will do a test of the dog’s temperament that involves seeing the dog’s natural reaction to novel things. Hope Heels is in the process of making small testing kits for rescue groups and shelters to use at their own location to do the initial testing of the dog. This test is video taped and then scored by Sarah-Jane Petti, a coach for Hope Heels and their Southern Alberta Coordinator.

Hope Heels is looking to take this one step further by recruiting service dog candidates from rescue groups. In this new part of the program, Hope Heels will form relationships with rescues and shelters and inform them of what they are looking for in a good service dog candidate. 14
Aanderson says, “In general, we are looking for dogs who are smart, have medium to low energy level and love to please.” To be a successful service dog, they cannot be timid, have behavioral issues or have any history of aggression towards people or other animals.

Aanderson is confident, “We know that wonderful dogs go through this provinces’ rescues and shelters every year – and we are confident that some of them would make great service dogs.”
Hope Heels began training these service dog teams one year ago and utilizes a unique format where the person with the disability is the lead trainer of the dog. They work together with a coach (professional dog trainer) and a counselor to progress through Hope Heels’ innovative Levels Program, which ensures that each team progresses local stories...local people...local pets
evenly towards their goal of becoming a certified service dog team. They have recently expanded what they do to include more programming in Edmonton and a new program in Calgary. There are many ways that these dogs can help their trainers. Some general examples of how Psychiatric Service Dogs can help mitigate mental health disabilities are:

Hope Heels does all this work with volunteers and already has a long waiting list for their services. Hope Heels helps everyone they can, but they are constrained by their resources. They hope that acquiring dogs from rescue groups can help them find suitable candidate dogs, but they need resources to help these dogs reach their full potential. “This is just the beginning.” Aanderson notes. “With more resources, there is no telling how many lives can be helped through this program.” It’s a win-win scenario. he City of Edmonton is now offering a PET Grant for rescue groups in Edmonton. Although the City of Edmonton re-unites stray pets with owners through licensing and microchip programs, we rely on pet adoption agencies to help find new homes for pets left unclaimed at the Animal Care & Control Centre. The City is offering the PET Grant to Agencies to help support their efforts to find homes for pets. For many years the City has nurtured relationships with local pet adoption groups. Traditionally their services have been entirely voluntary and no payment has been made to them for their services. The PET Grant offers Agencies an opportunity to apply for funds that can help them continue their good work in our community. • Important Deadlines Applications are accepted on the 15th day of each month from August through November 2011.
3. Commitment that the Agency’s policy is that all dogs or cats are spayed or neutered and permanently ID’d prior to being adopted into the community.
Applications are evaluated and funding levels are determined by the end of each month on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available.
4. The Agency ensures that pet owners living in Edmonton license newly adopted cats and dogs with the City’s Animal Care & Control Centre.

5. For PET Grant requests the City considers the amount of funds requested, the project budget, the stated reason for funds, the benefits of the project to the community, and the comprehensiveness of the application.

Grail Festival In Review

aturday September 17, was a flurry of activity at the Ritchie Community Centre, where time turned back to the medieval ages. Knights donned their attire and were accompanied by ladies dressed in their finest flowing gowns. Activities throughout the day included Mystical Readers, Fun Body Art, Crafts and much more. Needless to say, organizers of the event, Brenda Walsh, Jodie Badry and Alice Powell spared nothing in making this creative fundraising event for six local rescue organizations a resounding success. The lucky recipients of the funds raised through a silent auction and a myriad of â&#x20AC;&#x153;coolâ&#x20AC;? items for sale where: Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, Little Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society, For The Love Of Great Danes, Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation, Edmonton Reptile & Amphibian Society, and The Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton.
