Many people may recall a story that captured the attention of the media three years ago - a story of two abandoned horses that had been left to starve atop B.C.’s Mount Renshaw in the Rocky Mountains. The horses, given the names Belle and Sundance, were emaciated, shivering and trapped within the six feet of snow blanketing the mountain. Locals of the nearby town of McBride were given a heartbreaking decision - end the horses’ inevitable suffering with a gunshot, or feed them and devise a plan to save them. Those that followed the story as it unfolded know the final outcome, but this book is much more than a two minute news story. It is a heart wrenching journey readers follow with their fellow Canadians who came together to save animals in need. Readers are transported to the freezing cold Canadian wilderness where emotions and energy runs high and individuals lend sweat and tears to an impossible task. The passion of animal lovers resounds in this novel as the people of McBride pitched in to dig, by hand, the three-foot wide, six-foot deep, kilometre-long tunnel that became Belle and Sundance’s route to freedom. 4

I am a cute bay mare named Lila who came to Rescue 100 last January with 2 young horses that may be my foals. The volunteers
think that I am somewhere around 5 years old and although I may seem shy to some I’m actually very social and love people. My front knees are a bit turned in and it looks like I may have an old injury, so I am suitable as a companion horse only. I love to be out with the other horses and show my enthusiasm by running around with my tail held high.

Tail Docking Past and Present
Written By: Robyn Rosen While body modification is a growing trend for humans, the practice of animal body modification is a long withstanding tradition that was created for a specific purpose for working animals. In modern times the practice is increasingly argued worldwide, and banned in many countries. The argument remains; Is it cruel to remove part of an animals’ body for the sake of what is considered fashionable or traditional of specific breeds? Tail docking is the cutting off or removal of an animal’s tail. The tradition originated in ancient Roman times where worms in the tail of a dog were incorrectly thought to cause rabies. The belief led to the cutting off of part of the tail as a preventative measure. As the centuries carried on tail docking was done for more practical reasons; in working animals such as cart horses and hunting dogs the tail was shortened to prevent it getting caught in the cart, fences, full of burrs and the like which could cause great pain and result in amputation later in life. In more recent times for dogs such as Boxers, Pit Bulls and Rotweilers, who were subjected to the cruel life of a fighting dog, the tail was docked to prevent the opponent dog from grabbing on to it in battle. The trend may also have arose in non-working breeds due to the collection of “tail taxes” centuries ago in Europe, where a tax was charged to the owners of nonworking dogs in the household. The distinguishing feature between a working and non-working dog was the presence of a tail, and many people would dock their dogs tails to avoid paying the tax. These days the need to dock a dog’s tail is greatly decreased due to dogs being used less in a working role and 8

being owned primarily as a companion animal. As such there is not a great risk to damaging their tail in day-to-day life. So why then do breeders and vets continue to carry out the act? Although in many countries it is considered cruel mutilation and is not allowed, in North America it is common of breeds such as Poodles, Rotweilers, Dobermans etc to have their tails docked almost immediately after birth. The belief is that at such a young age there is no pain or discomfort to the animal and the wound heals more quickly and there is no sense of loss that a pup may feel if they receive the procedure at an older age after becoming accustomed to the natural uses of a tail. A primary reason breeders continue the practice is due to the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs breed standards, which means that dogs of certain breeds with undocked tails are presumably not eligible to show or will be docked points for not presenting the traditional look of a breed. Many vets and animal specialists argue that it is detrimental to the nature of a dog to remove it’s tail. The tail plays a huge role in communication with other dogs and with people, and a dog without a tail is significantly handicapped in expressing fear, caution, aggression, playfulness and so on. Also many dogs use their tails for balance and direction for activities such as swimming and running which provides a disadvantage to dogs with docked tails while in motion. These factors may lead to behavioural issues and an increase in harm coming to these dogs due to fighting with other animals (a result of lack of communication) . The argument will remain, is tail docking a cruel and painful mutilation of an animal or the preservation of history and fashion in the canine species? With countries such as Sweden having banned the act since 1989 and others such as Australia, Germany and Belgium having banned it in more recent years there seems to be a growing awareness worldwide. Time will tell if USA and Canada join the movement toward letting our beloved four legged friends live in their natural physical state as they were intended. local stories...local people...local pets

Rocky! Rocky! Rocky! I could hear them calling my name but I was already curled up in a ball for the evening. The sun had already set on a cool autumn day and I was trying hard to conserve my energy and body heat. I was too tired and sore too move, too sad because my best friend had just died. Why would anyone be calling for me? They kept calling though. With obvious doubt, I unwound my gangly legs and decided to trot over to the voices calling my name – a decision that changed my life forever. October 16th, 2011 was my very lucky day. I got rescued. On this evening, two women drove into my townsite on a First Nation’s community in central Alberta. As they stood with my owners – everyone calling my name – I just lay and huddled down for the night. They left in disappointment as I did not come running out to my name. However, my owners kept calling me and I wandered over to check why I was being beckoned. My owners quickly texted my two guardian angels that I had been located. My life changed when they turned their SUV around to come back for me. By the time they got back I had wondered off again but this time I came running to my name being called - I could sense something different in the air. 14

These two women got out of their SUV with a big package of meat chunks and they started offering me some – this had never happened to me before and I did not know what to think except I wanted more. They tried to get me to jump into their SUV but after I failed a few times they lifted me in and I got to ride in the front passenger seat all curled up because they already had a pregnant dog in a kennel in the back. To lie on a soft seat, to have a gentle hand petting me, and to have warm air blowing on me, was a little piece of heaven. When I got to my foster home I got to meet one of the dogs in my home. I was so terrified she was going to attack me local stories...local people...local pets
and I knew I just could not defend myself in my condition. I just kept hiding behind one of the women knowing they would protect me. I got to have several big bowls of water which was a real treat for me. I was quite full from the meat chunks so I did not eat too much food that evening. I personally prefer the raw beef to the hypoallergenic food they were trying to get me to eat. I got to have a bath that first evening and again these really kind people kept petting me even though my skin emitted a strong pungent smell and was covered in greasiness due to the demodectic mange I had. They talked very quietly to me so my first bath went pretty good. It was actually a very quick bath because I hardly had any fur to wash. But I made sure to do lots of shaking after my bath just like a healthy dog would. Although my name, Rocky, suited me in the fact that I had a rocky life, my new found two-legged friends felt I should have a new name for a new start. It was decided that I would go with the name Julian and every time I hear it now I come running, wagging my little stump of a tail as fast as I can. As my story reads, I am a 3-4 year old surrendered boy from a First Nation’s community. I most likely have some Rotti and Shepherd in me. When I got rescued my skin was like leather – like elephant skin. My foster family and Rescue for Life patiently waited to see what color my fur was going to grow in and they are just starting to get a glimpse of that now.
had very wormy poop! Now, a month and half later, I eat a normal amount of food and I can even take treats gently. Of course, food remains my number one motivation and I will do anything for a treat. In my stress free environment, I have thrived and been given this amazing second chance at life. My fur has grown back in, my skin has turned back a normal pink color, and my personality shines brighter every day. I have learned to play, learned to lounge on a sofa, learned to go for walks, and learned that other dogs will not attack me because I have people that will protect me. I have learned to live with cats, learned that I will always have a next meal, learned to live with gentle children, learned about hugs and kisses, and most importantly I have learned what it is to be loved. In return, I want to walk up to every person who offers me a kind touch or a treat and give them a very gentle hug. However, I am reminded that I must stay on my four legs and I will get an even bigger hug. When you look into my eyes I think you see my appreciation – at least that is what I want you to see. The saddest part of my story is that my best friend passed away just days before I was rescued due to the same condition I had. My story is just one of many. My friends are waiting to come in too. I was rescued with a skin condition called demodectic mange. My skin had turned black due to how long I had the mange. It really is just a mite that all dogs have (even healthy ones) but because I was so malnourished my compromised immune system could not keep everything in balance and these mites overtook me. I also had severe secondary skin infections too and I was on antibiotics for four weeks but I have completed all my antibiotics now. This skin condition is caused by long-standing severe malnutrition and psychological stress. I did not have any type of survival instincts and with no food being provided I slowly went into very bad health. I also am missing my tail and it is believed that it was cut off when I was a baby - maybe because I looked like a Rotti puppy. I still wag it non-stop to show you that I am really happy! Over the past month and a half I have been fed a gentle hypoallergenic diet and supplements to help build my immune system. I also had a month of antibiotics for my secondary skin infections. I received baths every two to three days from my foster family to help keep my skin clean and grease free. When I first came in I would eat 8-10 cups of food everyday as my body could not process the food properly and much of it was going to waste; plus I local stories...local people...local pets

...as long as you feed & water me, exercise & play with me, potty and kennel train me, teach me my basic commands and of course love me forever…we should be good to go! We are well worth the effort but please make sure you have the time and patience if you are thinking of adopting a young puppy. The unknown reality is that adult rescues are truly AMAZING and usually a lot less work. You also know ahead of time how big they will be, their general temperament and if in foster care you will likely learn all about their habits and how they get along with other pets and people. By adopting a rescued adult a lot of work and uncertainty can often be bypassed if it does not suit your lifestyle. If you really just want to spend some time with a puppy (they are pretty cute!) please consider fostering instead. Puppies are often like grandchildren, always very loved but best appreciated when you know they will eventually be going home!
