No Shelter Here is a wonderful introductory for younger generations and sure to be a book the entire family will learn from. From what dogs need to have a quality life to serious issues and those who face them, Rob Laidlaw gives young readers a fair but realistic view on today’s canine world. While learning simple facts about acquiring a dog, their needs and responsible ownership, they are also exposed to several realities in the canine/human realm. When it comes to the impact humans have on “Man’s
Best Friend” there are sensitive issues that can be extremely difficult to discuss, let alone explain. Laidlaw gently explores various topics such as research, racing, chaining and puppy mills while featuring what he calls “Champions” from around the world and what they are doing to create change. There is even a few “Champions” right here from Alberta that are mentioned for their work on First Nation Communities! If you, or a young person you know, are interested in adopting a dog, rescuing a dog or just learning about dogs in general, this is a fantastic resource that is sure to educate & inspire. Anyone can be a champion for pets, everyone should be a champion for pets, and this book is sure to inspire those with a passion to know that they too can make a difference. Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Woof! Woof! I’m Chester. I’m so happy that I am running around in circles because I was sprung from the pound and life is really looking up! I am a Great Pyrenees X with a very gentle nature. I’m an all around good boy and will make a wonderful family pet.
My name is Cody and I was hanging on to Chester’s tail when we were sprung from the pound! My foster mom said I was really stinky and a mess of knots. I wonder if stinky might be a code word for lucky because I sure feel good now! I am about 2yrs old and likely a Lhasa “Designer” X.
I am an 8mth old small Shepherd X named Finley. I was abandoned but ARTS alerted DDARS and I was quickly rescued. I am very friendly, a quick learner and good with other dogs & kids. I appear to be house trained already too but toys aren`t something I’m familiar with just yet.
My name is Kerry and I put my little paws together and prayed that somebody would get me off the chain I had been living on and my prayers were answered! I am a 35lb, 3yr old, Border Collie. I am a happy-go-lucky little girl who loves snuggling, people, kids and other dogs.

make the rescue world go round Jo-Ann has played an integral part of the PAWS for Life Foundation for as many years as I can remember now. She currently holds the position of volunteer coordinator but is often found doing far more than would be outlined in such a position. Her dedication and commitment to the animals that come into our group is evident to all the people who see her with them as well as in the outcome of all the animals she works with. Jo-Ann first got into helping the animals in our group after working very 8

As Spencer was starting to get better with being around other dogs, Jo-Ann came across this terrified tiny little dog that was running free in her neighborhood with seemingly no home. After spotting this dog on several occasions and never being able to get close, she decided she needed to do something before the worst happened to this poor little thing. She talked with several other people in the area and although many of them had seen the little dog; no one knew where he came from. Jo-Ann and some of the others made attempts to catch the dog, but to no avail. After some time had passed with still no luck in capturing the dog, Jo-Ann borrowed a cat trap hoping that would bring success. She caught a number of other animals during the first week (which were all released) and finally caught the little dog she was trying for. He had a huge lump on his side and was absolutely terrified. Jo-Ann followed procedure for lost and found pets in the city and turned him in to the Animal Care & Control Centre. After being unclaimed, the scared little dog was

transferred to PAWS for Life Foundation, which made Jo-Ann extremely happy. While he was with us, he was groomed (the lump turned out to be a big mat) and he worked with a trainer to help him overcome his fear. After only a few days “Bennyâ€? (as he is now known) was willing to come out when people came into his room, then he started to play fetch. After a while he befriended a cat, and began accepting other dogs to come near him. His training continued for a very long time, and Jo-Ann was always sure to come in for a playful visit regularly. About a year and a half later, Jo-Ann took Benny home to see how he would do in a home environment. He did wonderfully, of course a few accidents and incidents along the way, but overall he did great. Jo-Ann has since adopted Benny, and has been known to take him to work with her on occasion. Having seen the dierence that she was able to make for Benny and her own dog Spencer, she has gone on to foster many other dogs with confidence. The dogs that have been fostered with JoAnn became better mannered, more socialized and overall more adoptable. Jo-Ann continues to foster one dog at local stories...local people...local pets

I am Bree the Boxer. I am really shy at first but I warm up quick. I am trying really hard to be good but I need lots of reassurance. I have had several litters in my 5-6yrs. I also have numerous scars from being beaten up by other dogs but I still like other dogs and cats too! I have a very trusting and kind soul and I’m looking for a very special family.
They call me Annie, this is what I looked like when I came in, but you should see me now! I like other dogs and cats too. They say I am blind because of previous head trauma causing haemorrhaging in my head but I hide it really well. The good news is that the haemorrhaging is subsiding and my eyesight is beginning to come back.
I’m Sadie. I am a 3yr old Miniature Pinscher that has a lot of love to share with people, other dogs, cats - anyone who wants a little loving really! I could probably stand learning a few manners ...but I am so cute, do I seriously “need” manners? I know some neat tricks and I’m crate trained - isn’t that good enough for now?

magine for a moment what it is like to be an abandoned animal. There is loneliness, fear, hunger, and thirst. Danger is everywhere—you become sick with no one to help; you give birth to babies with no means to protect or feed them; you face a slow death—either from extreme temperatures, starvation, illness or injuries. You are a joyful spirit, but you never smile. You need someone to take care of you, but you are alone. Now imagine for a moment that a loving hand is extended and soon you are warm, fed, and your fear and pain are gone. Imagine you are lucky enough to find someone who cares. Imagine looking into that person’s eyes and feeling trust— feeling safe—maybe for the first time. You are finally home! There are thousands of dogs and cats in Alberta that are suffering right at this moment. But hundreds are saved from that suffering every day because of animal rescue. Some people find the notion of animal suffering so troubling they can’t even think about it, don’t want to hear about it and can’t imagine how anyone could choose to focus their time and energy on it. Their compassion—in the face of such an overwhelming situation—collapses. But thankfully there are people like you who know that ignoring their plight will not make the problem go away. It is only through recognizing and talking about animal suffering that we can create lasting change. And there are so many ways to help animals. Even the smallest of good deeds makes their world and ours a better place. Our goals, however daunting, are not insurmountable—not impossible— and we prove it every single day. mal, there are probably a dozen human lives that are touched for the better along the way. Each animal’s life is precious, and each rescue story makes us feel triumphant and fills our hearts with love. We are bonded to animals. They bring us joy. They make us feel special. Somehow they complete us, and we them. 2011 has been an amazing year for SCARS. From January 1 to early December 31, SCARS rescued 857 animals (391 dogs, 326 puppies, 90 cats and 50 kittens), and we have rehomed 776 animals (384 dogs, 294 puppies, 77 cats and 21 kittens). We think that’s amazing and we hope you agree! In case there is any doubt why SCARS is so important — meet Cora. Even though winter has been warmer than normal this year, it was a bone chilling day when we got the call from the staff at a northern landfill site Cora about a mother dog living amongst the garbage. That day the staff had been instructed to fill the pit, but before they moved in the bulldozers they reached out to SCARS for help. When a SCARS volunteer arrived, the mother dog who has since been named Cora, was nowhere to be seen. With the calling by a local lady who frequents the dump to feed the dogs, Cora poked her head out of a pile of garbage. She barely managed to squeeze her body out because of the weight of garbage that had piled up on top of where she and her babies were hiding. At first she was reluctant to leave the pit but luckily the food being offered was too tempting to resist. pet rescue magazine
It took a little more coaxing before the volunteer was able to load Cora to the safety of her truck. Observing where Cora had emerged from the pile of rubbish, everyone had a good idea that her pups would be there buried somewhere in a mass of discarded human trash. Next came the not so fun part of digging through the garbage, but then the volunteer happened on an old chair that was tipped upside down. Huddled together in a “puppy heap” were 10 little pups, about a week old. Carefully, and one by one, they were removed and each pup was returned to a very worried mother. It’s been a couple of weeks since the rescue of Cora and her pups. The pit was filled and Cora has turned out to be a loving and gentle girl. She and her little “dump” family, as they have affectionately come to be known, are doing well and are available for adoption. This family is just one of hundreds of success stories SCARS can recount. There are no small roles in animal rescue. It takes a community of caring people to save an animal. The northern pounds continue to be full and SCARS will continue to work hard to find more foster homes and to raise the funds needed to accept these animals into our care. In 2011 SCARS also expanded its cat rescue operations from northern communities adding another dimension to their brilliant work so far. prm February/March 2012

Pre-requisites For A Successful Bond Between Rabbits. Even though rabbits are a social pet you’d hardly see them going out for dinner, or dining on a dinner of lettuce and carrots. All bunnie lovers know the best diet is hay, pellets and water. So what about bonding and bunnie dating? What is it and where can you get help to do it? A bond between rabbits means that they tolerate each another to the point of being able to live in the same habitat. Rabbits are social creatures and many people decide on getting a second. This may or may not work out as planned if you don’t follow some simple introduction rules. Sometimes, pet rabbit owners give up and end up keeping the rabbits separate permanently, but it is never too late to try again. Rabbits meant to be bonded must have been altered for at least a month before you can start the introductions between the two. Gender will play a subordinate role at this point as the rabbits have been desexed. Note that young rabbits can be unpredictable and extra caution when calling them a bond is advised. If you’re new to rabbits and would like to adopt one or a pair into your home you can be sure that the people at New Beginnings Rabbit Rescue will be more than willing to give you a course in appropriate bunny care. However, if you’re considering giving a second bunny a home then it is a good idea to take your rabbit bunny-dating. You can bring your spayed or neutered rabbit to their shelter and New Beginnings can see if she or he will “hit it off ” with one of theirs. This does not eliminate the need for more bonding sessions, but it can make them easier though they say. Social bunnies make great pets, best you “hop to it” and consider giving a rescue bunny or two a home! Simple Tips For Bonding Your Rabbits • Take an in-charge role for the introductions: bonding can be stressful even for the rabbits’ owner! • Set-up a completely neutral space for the meetings, this is paramount to avoid serious territorially motivated fights. • Have stressors ready. Stressors are things that will startle the rabbits in the event that there is a fight. Your job is not to let a fight occur. You can read your rabbits’ intentions by their ears and tail. • Stressors are usually a type of noise, such as from a vacuum cleaner, a motion sensation, such as a car ride, a strange place, such as your empty bath tub, a very confined space, such as a small box to fit both rabbits, an unpleasant feeling such as a squirt of water on the rabbit’s forehead. It depends on the rabbit which ones will be effective. Start with less stressful ones first, e.g. vacuum cleaner as a noise, or having the rabbits on your lap in a box and rocking them. • Wear protective gloves, rabbit bites can be deep. • Don’t give up when the going gets tough. Bonding requires patience, patience and patience. • If a fight occurs, you need to allow for a cooling-off period and start over. Rabbits can bear a grudge but they can also overcome one!

“Quilly Boy” A Rescuer’s Story
By Rachel Glube - Rescue For Life When I get home from work, my second job starts. For me, just driving home has obstacles that most people never even encounter. I have to cross a community every day that has a lot of stray and abandoned animals and that can be challenge if you are into rescue at all. I have chased horses back to their homes or off the highways and often stopped to pick an animal up from the dump. Sometimes I get a phone call or an email regarding a desperate plea for a family needing help with a pet and I will leave work early just to go and help the animal out. On November 15th, 2011 I made my forty minute drive home from work and felt relieved to not have seen an local stories...local people...local pets
animal in distress on my journey. I was not home for longer than twenty minutes when the phone rang. I almost did not answer the phone. Letting it go to voicemail can be a temporary relief. Then the internal nagging starts to set in and I worry if something is wrong with a foster home or if someone else with an animal needs help. That evening I did pick up the phone right away. I rushed out to the reserve breaking all legal speed limits. I knew if I had other volunteers with me they would be infuriated with my aggressive driving. I got out in record time, trying to get there with a bit of light still around. No such luck. The sun had set and the winter evening chill was in the air. I
know this reserve like the back of my hand and as I raced along the ice roads I worried what I would find. I was told it was bad and if I am called about such a situation, I typically expect the worst. I pulled into a driveway that I had passed a thousand times but had never driven up. I was not sure I was in the right spot. I got out of my car and I called in the darkness, towards the house that was lit up. It was the right home because someone opened the door and told me to wait. I paced while waiting. A few minutes later the family came out of their home. Deep down, I just wanted to be home with my dogs and cats. Deep down, I did not want to be worrying about someone else’s problems. But very deep down, I knew it was my concern to make sure this phone call to me ended with resolution.

“Quilly Boy” - A Rescuer’s Story cont’ from page 27
I was greeted by a warm but concerned family – parents and exuberant children. They were relieved I had come out to help them with their injured dog. When I arrived, no dogs were around. Of course, I was curious to see this injured dog. I know in these communities, quite often if I get called out, the situation must be dire. So, yes I was curious. As the darkness settled around us, my anxiety grew slightly as they called out and no dogs came running. I know dogs settle for the night. Part of me did not want this to be a wasted trip but a much bigger part of me was concerned for just the life of this dog. A few minutes of calling go by. My disappointment only grew as the seconds ticked by. Happy children were trying to shovel details of this dog’s injuries into my ears. Sadly, they didn’t seem to be phased by the fact that this dog was suffering. By this point, I just wanted to see this dog. I just wanted to get him in my car and get going to the clinic. Finally, in the distance, I hear the snow crunching, paws beating on the ground, and as they approached I could hear dogs panting with excitement. They arrived in the darkness and I could only see shadows of two dogs. They seemed happy and both were clamouring all over me for attention and affection. For a brief moment, I thought everything was ok – just initial impressions of two happy dogs. But then the smell of infection wafted by my nose. They continued clamouring and one of the dogs jumped to give kisses and I could feel a wetness across my cheek. As I wiped my cheek clean, I could smell the odor of infection on my fingers. I was worried, yet I still could not see anything. I accepted the fact that something was very wrong with one of these dogs and I asked for help getting the injured dog into my car. I profusely thanked the family for calling and helping me and my last words were that I will be back to give them updates. I got into car and I half expected that this dog would be happy to see me. After all he was happy with his family, seemingly unaware of his major injuries to his face. This was not the case at all. For the 90 minute drive into the emergency vet clinic, this dog decided that his injuries were so embarrassing that he could not bare to show me his face. Instead, he planted his back end on my seat and buried his head somewhere in the floor. When I arrived at the emergency vet clinic, I told them I had “another one”. I explained the situation of this dog in my car with an abscessed face but I had yet to actual see it. They came out to help me get him out of the car and this poor soul 28

still did not want to show his face. When we finally got him into the clinic we realized that half of his face had abscessed off from porcupine quills that had entered two months before but had not been treated properly. He was nervous being indoors. Being around all those people that cared and were looking at his face. But there was nothing mean about this dog even though half of his face was an infected mess. We made arrangements to have him stay at the emergency vet clinic overnight until we could transfer him to our regular clinic the next morning. I went home that evening with a worried mind. A little worried about what this vet had told me. He made me aware of the fact that perhaps this boy could not be saved if the skin grafts did not take as he was missing so much of his face. In the end, what kept me optimistic that evening was the fact this dog was bouncing with life and happiness at the fact that people were paying him attention. He seemed to have no pain response and he seemed not to mind that his face was so badly damaged. It was unimaginable and unacceptable to have any other thoughts cross my mind except how were we going to fix his face. The next morning I transported Quilly Boy (as I nickname all the quill boy dogs) to the Crestwood Vet Clinic for further treatment. Often when I arrive, the question of the day is “What have you brought in today?” Well of course that day was no different. I walked to the back of the clinic carrying this gentle boy in my arms and I placed him on a table as many of the staff watched while doing their morning work. One of the vets asked what happened. My too nonchalant response was “It is just quills.” their response was “Just quills? Half of his face is missing! Is his eye there?” For the first few days, just IV antibiotics and supportive therapy were provided. No surgeries could be performed until some of the infection could be brought under control. As the meds, rest, and TLC worked their magic, the infection was controlled and slowly we realized that he still had his eye and still had full vision too. During the next month the wonderful staff at the Crestwood Vet Clinic provided reconstructive surgery and top notch treatment for this deserving boy who we eventually named Bronson. Bronson had numerous surgeries to debride and repair his face including surgery to move his neck skin up to cover the missing skin on his face. This amazing staff also managed to save an eye that we could not even see when he was rescued. Not once did Bronson ever fail to show his love of life and the love for the people who helped him along his journey of recovery. local stories...local people...local pets
Bronson sported colourful bandages around his head for the first couple few weeks. His daily bandage changes slowly diminished to the point where he did not need any more bandages. But he continued to sport his big cone that he seemed to be unaware he was even wearing – love me and my big cone too! The big reveal of his varying surgeries always came in photos from the vet clinic as his head was always wrapped in bandages when we visitBronson after surgery ed. Once his bandages were removed, Bronson had to get used to having a slightly different face and he had to stretch out his new skin on his face – in fact, in the beginning he looked like he was permanently smiling on his injured side.
A little over a month later, Bronson brings smiles to so many people. He is a little awe-inspiring with his genuine love of life. His furry “neck cheek” is testament to his past and the only reminder to us – he appears to have no memories as he enjoys life to his fullest. He attends Rescue for Life events and is the ultimate ambassador of rescue, recovery and of course future re-homing – Bronson is looking for his forever home! We have promised everyone involved with Bronson that he is going to get the most perfect matched home for him. prm

t the Rescue And Sanctuary For Threatened Animals in Southern Alberta, Lucie Cerny is seeing an increase in the influx of what was a 1990’s fad craze – little pigs. Known by many in the pig rescue world as potbelly pigs, the Tea Cups, Micro-Minis, Ultra-Minis, call them what you will, are requiring rescue in droves. Most of these pigs originated from breeders who suggest to prospective purchasers that these little porkers will grow no bigger than a small breed dog. Don’t be fooled! Unfortunately, this is an over exaggeration with some of these supposedly miniature pigs topping the scales at 80 to 250lbs.

Originating in Vietnam, potbelly pigs are smaller than their European cousins, or farm pigs, which normally weigh in at 1000lbs plus so one can see why they’ve assumed the moniker of “miniature”. However, rescue organizations will tell you there is no such thing as a “Micro Mini” or “Tea Cup” potbelly pig and that it is a marketing tactic used to boost the sale of these animals. Rescuers will also tell you that in order to create the illusion of tiny pigs the pictures you often see on web sites are those of pigs only a day or two old. Another ploy to get people to believe that these pigs will be forever small is to show the breeding parents, what isn’t
Before opting to bring any pet into the home, any responsible pet guardian will do their research. Responsibility means understanding the commitment one is entering into, and the care and environment that is required for the wellness of the animal. Pigs, however cute, are pigs and come with their own set of rules to keep them happy, healthy and in an environment best suited to them. It appears that many people caught up in the fad have missed this phase of cognitive reasoning and that is why the potbelly pig, known as the “yuppy puppy” in the 1990’s, has joined the ranks of yet another exotic pet species requiring rescue. prm
