Hinton & District SPCA Hello rescue fans my name is Baxter and I am a 1yr old, high energy, Rotti X. I need regular exercise and mental stimulation to help me be happy and the best dog I can be. I am hoping for a very active home that will love me forever.

I am a 1.5yr old Pitti/Bull Dog X named Guido. I am full of exuberance and eager to please. I do have a tendency to guard my valuables though so I will need to work on this. I am looking for a new home that is familiar with my breeds.

Howdy, my name is Casey and I am a loving, 1yr old, Husky X. I am very smart and I love to go for walks and runs. I also have an amazing ability to escape so I will need a home with a securely fenced area to ensure my safety.

Everyone calls me Kona. I am a 4yr old Malamute that LOVES people but I do not get along with some of the other dogs. I love to fetch and shake a paw… and I can’t wait to show you! I would also make a fantastic running partner.

My name is Guiness and I am a 2.5yr old Lab/Retriever X. I love big people, but little people tend to scare me. I also protect my food so I will need a new home willing to work with me. I’m ready for adoption and eager to please.

Hey there, I’m Lucas. I am a very sweet 1yr old Husky X. I ADORE going for walks and if you don’t take me I’ll just take myself… being an escape artist I will need a very secure area in my forever home. Come on by and meet me and my friends!

Hello, my name is Walker and I’m a 1yr old Shepherd X. I was previously a backyard puppy so I am really enjoying my inside bed and I’m working hard on my socialization and leash skills. I sure hope to find a loving family soon.

I’m a Burmese Mountain Dog /Border Collie X named Mufasa. I am about 1yr old and I am busy learning my manners. New experiences can freak me out but I’m improving. I would do best in a home with older children as little kids scare me.

Allie here, I’m a 9 mth old Lab X. I am pretty mellow girl who really enjoys treats, but what girl doesn’t? I am looking forward to finding my forever family. I still need to be vet checked before I can go to my forever family but I can be reserved.

Paws For Life (PAWS) I’m a very sweet & beautiful 8-9yr old Dachshund named BeBee. Do you like my lovely flower? I am very shy, but I can overlook that if you want to cuddle. I promise to keep your lap warm through the winter. I try hard to do everything just right!

I’m Gregory. I am a wonderful 1yr old Dachshund who will keep you on your toes! I have so much energy and I’m always ready to GO, GO, Go! Play, walk, jog... whatever it is just let me know and I’ll be at your side.

Hey out there! I‘m a very sweet, 5.5yr old, Shitzhu X named Jewels. I’m quite the little lady and like to be close by my people all the time. I just want to be your best gal pal! I like to wander a bit if you’ll come with me but I’m A-ok to just be close by.

My name is Jilly, and Julie is my sister. I’m very bright and can already sleep through the entire night in my kennel. We currently live with cats, and although I really (really) want them to play, I’m learning that they don’t care much for puppies.

Hi, I’m Julie! Don’t I look sweet? I’m a 1yr old German Shepherd X. I love to run and play, but above all I’m just a quiet shy little puppy who needs someone’s warm arms to cuddle in to and keep me safe. I am very smart, nearly housetrained and I love my kennel.

Hello, my name is Mambo and I love to explore. I am looking hard for a home where I will get long walks and lots of cuddles. I just want to love you as much as you’ll let me! My friends at PAWS say I’m pretty quiet so far but boy do I love to snuggle. Please adopt me!

Tail Of The Month by Jamie Hunter

Cat Sense by: John Bradshaw

Who doesn’t look at their pet and wonder how they are feeling or how they think? I think most of us have wished we were mind readers at one point or another. From the author of “In Defence Of Dogs” comes a very interesting book called “Cat Sense: The Feline Enigma Revealed”. Biologist and animal-behavior expert John Bradshaw presents scientific and behavioral research on cats allowing the reader to better understand their ancient instincts, intelligence and general nature. Bradshaw begins by taking a journey through feline evolution and the roles they have played within our human society for the last 10,000 years. Although extremely interesting, some will find it quite upsetting. Adorning Greek coins and worshipped as Gods by ancient Egyptians’ on one end of the spectrum, victimized quite cruelly on the other. 8

pet rescue magazine

October/November 2013

The book continues with the science of modern cats including their anatomy, genetics and very impressive abilities and senses. Thought processes and emotions are also discussed and everyone will find this to be an eye opener - especially those thinking they know everything about our feline friends! Bradshaw notes that many cats suffer in silence from strong emotions, and he also offers the reader a new view on the widely assumed acceptance of multi-cat households living happily together. Although cats currently seem to be treated quite well in comparison to other times, the author goes on to outline some of the present human threats and presents his thoughts on the future and modern day needs of the domestic cat. He stresses that more research is needed, and writes “Cats now face possibly more hostility than at any time during the last two centuries.” Learning from the perspective of a cat as well as science is a wonderful way to really get to know and understand your pet and their needs better. I found learning about society’s historical interaction and impact on cats incredibly fascinating albeit somewhat disturbing. Although science based this is a very interesting read and it is sure to give everyone some factual insight on the feline world. local stories...local people...local pets

Shanna’s Story

By: Lori Trudgeon

T

his is a story not unlike many other SCARS rescues, but it demonstrates that sometimes animals are in greater peril than we might realize at first glance. This is Shanna’s story. Saturday, September 7, 2013 was Shanna’s lucky day, but she didn’t realize it at first. She was strolling along a lonely gravel road near Hobbema when two SCARS volunteers (Sylvia Christiansen and I) noticed her. We were part of a large group of volunteers, many from local animal rescues, participating in a weekend pet wellness clinic being offered by the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force. The goal of these events is high volume spay neuter to help reduce the number of stray animals in the area. These clinics reduce animal suffering and improve the health and safety of the community. Sadly, First Nation children suffer an inordinate amount of dog bites usually from unneutered male dogs. These clinics are community supported and they are creating positive change with long-term benefits. We stopped and got out, calling to the ragged little dog that would soon be named, Shanna. Initially, she was too fearful 12

pet rescue magazine

October/November 2013

to let us approach and she ran as quickly as her little legs would carry her down the road. But we weren’t willing to give up so easily. We got back into the truck and reversed slowly until we caught up with her. This time, we got out and shook a bag of dog food. The sound caught Shanna’s attention. She stopped and stared curiously. Next we poured a small amount of food on the ground and backed away. Shanna was hungry. Very soon she cautiously approached and began to eat. Half of the battle with earning an animal’s trust is playing the waiting game. Fortunately, it didn’t take long to earn Shanna’s trust. Within a few minutes, we were able to move towards her and eventually we got close enough to pick her up. Shanna’s sense of relief was obvious. She was happy to be in the safety of caring human hands. On closer inspection, it was clear that Shanna, a Shih Tzu cross, was malnourished and badly needed a grooming. But it was not the worst case of neglect we had seen since we had arrived at Hobbema on Friday morning. We inquired at some of the surrounding acreage homes, but no one knew where Shanna belonged. She was too vulnerable to be left to fend for herself so we brought her back to local stories...local people...local pets

the clinic. Long-story-short, paperwork was initiated and very soon she officially became a SCARS dog. And it didn’t take long to find her a foster home. Sylvia’s call went something like this. “Chris, check out the photo I just emailed you.” Enough said. Chris Sanderson, SCARS foster home/ foster home supervisor, agreed to take the little dog right away. By that evening, volunteer Patti McFarlane was on her way to Edmonton with Shanna and several other surrendered dogs and puppies that were headed to SCARS’ foster homes. During the course of the weekend, several trips were made to Edmonton by our volunteers and many helped at the clinic in various capacities. Sylvia and I spent the weekend on pet “round up” which means we went door-to-door inviting families to have their pets spayed or neutered. Most were very happy to accept the offer. Our role included transporting and later returning pets to their homes. Once Shanna was in foster care, she was bathed and groomed to remove her horribly matted fur. Next, like all SCARS dogs, Shanna was off for a health check and spay. While undergoing her spay, it was discovered she needed a hernia repair and required the removal of 10 rotten teeth. Shanna is estimated to be about six years old. During the at home recovery that followed her surgery, she became lethargic and had to be rushed back to the clinic for exploratory surgery. Unfortunately, the cause of her illness initially couldn’t be determined. Because it was now Friday evening, a decision was made to take her to the Edmonton Veterinary Emergency Clinic so she could be monitored over the weekend, and receive pain medication and hydration through an IV. That is where a startling discovery was made. An X-ray revealed that a one-inch piece of wire was deeply imbedded in her little hip. How it got there we will never know, but we can only imagine how much pain it must have caused her. Another surgery was performed and by Saturday evening, Shanna was on her way to a full recovery. Her foster mom, Chris, spent Saturday evening at EVEC snuggling with Shanna reminding her that the hard part of her life was now over. By September 24, Shanna was well enough to be adopted. Shanna will now get the chance to live a long, happy life under the watchful care of her loving adoptive family. No more pain or lonely roads for Shanna. We can’t help wonder what would have become of Shanna if she hadn’t been walking along that road on September 7. Her suffering wasn’t immediately obvious, but it is clear that dogs cannot under any circumstances be expected to fend for themselves. We don’t know how Shanna came to be alone, but we are grateful to the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force and all the SCARS supporters and volunteers that make these kinds of rescues possible. We hope that anyone who spots a stray dog would to do whatever they could to help it without endangering their own safety. You often can’t tell at a glance just how desperately that help is needed. prm local stories...local people...local pets

NEW HOPE FOR SOME RESCUED ANIMALS By: Jan Simmonds

A

t 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 21st, a team of eighteen professionals and volunteers was ready to receive up to twenty non-owned and feral cats and dogs at the no-cost neuter/ spay session offered by the Kittyhawk Animal Foundation and the Granada Veterinary Clinic in Sherwood Park. The animals, delivered by several Edmonton area rescue groups, were registered, examined for possible health issues, prepped for surgery and carefully watched during their recovery time after surgery. Dr. Deborah Carroll and her assistants generously volunteered their services, not only for the surgery but to instruct the eager volunteers who filled out the paper records, welcomed the dogs and cats, helped prepare them and care for them in recovery, sterilized the equipment and kept everything clean. When the clinic was in its planning stage, friends of the Kittyhawk executive and of the Veterinary Clinic volunteered to come for the day as they believed it was a very worth14

while project – and all agreed that it really was! The organizers were thrilled by this comment from one of the rescue groups: “The clinic is amazing; their teamwork is wonderful to see.” Sadly, there is no printable comment available from the dogs and cats who were the beneficiaries of all the attention, but we know that many of them are already on the way to new homes and loving owners. The Kittyhawk Animal Foundation, headed by Leslie Dowler, is dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and homeless animals. The Foundation is delighted to receive donations from concerned groups and individuals who share this mission. Annual funding is given to nationally registered rescue groups. Kittyhawk is very pleased with this pilot clinic which reached out to local rescue groups needing such support for their efforts. Please ask about us... you won’t be sorry!

Hi, my name is Tangi and I am a snuggle bug baby! I was saved with my two siblings from being euthanized as wild kittens, but you’d never know that now. I still have to go in for surgery to get that neuter thing done but then I’m ready, are you?

If you are looking for a real life teddy bear then I’m your man! My name is Georgie and as you can see I’m pretty goofy! I will lay in your arms, cuddle up and love every minute of it. Por el amor de los perros! For The Love Of Dogs! By: Karen Sokol

T

his September 29th, a very special group of dogs and their human families gathered at Terwillegar Off-leash Park in Edmonton. These dogs travelled across a continent to get here and were meeting up for the first time since leaving their life in a shelter. And, thanks to incredible organizations like the Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation (WHARF) and Playa Animal Rescue (PAR) in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, these happy, grateful dogs are now thriving family members in loving and safe homes here in Edmonton and surrounding areas. I am a lucky co-guardian to two of these beautiful Mexi-mutts, Abby and Mikey. But, why did they have to come so far, when there are so many animals right here in need? Maybe it’s because many of us feel that all animals, cat or dog, big or small, deserve love and a chance at a real life - no matter where they come from. Co-Director at PAR, Jan Northenscold understands there are dogs everywhere needing help. “But here in Mexico, it is so much worse than anywhere I 16

have ever seen. Without our Humane Partners (across the U.S. and Canada), we would have a lot of trouble finding homes for our dogs.” PAR board member Heather Stewart adds, “Many know that Mexico’s outlook is typically different regarding the treatment of animals in general. That is changing, but until greater education and understanding is achieved, we are very grateful to have international support to get more animals into loving homes.” Tessa Lee, co-founder of WHARF says, “Being partnered with amazing groups in Mexico that are not only saving animals, but more so, reducing population explosions and really focusing on educating the public through spay/neuter clinics, kids help days and general assistance with the basic care of owning a dog is very important, and we respect it a lot.” Not only does WHARF help the Mexican dogs, but they also have taken in dogs from Saskatchewan, NWT and BC. “If we have room, we help.” Tessa also adds, “even if we say yes to a dog or cat from other areas, we have never said local stories...local people...local pets

no to a pound animal from one of our 5 area partners here. We have a ‘take everything’ policy for the dogs in Lac St. Anne County. Every dog in our rescue gets a chance at being rehabilitated, treated for medical conditions or fear aggression.” The reunion welcomed about 20 dogs and their families. Some of them are siblings or pen-mates, seeing each other for the first time since leaving Mexico. Most of them were rescued and sheltered at PAR in Playa del Carmen, and a few others made their way from ISLA Animals in Isla Murjeres or Cancun through Tierra de Animales. But all had been welcomed to Canada through Alberta’s own WHARF rescue. Situated near Mayerthorpe, many of the dogs start their new life there, under the caring love of sisters (and WHARF founders), Tessa and Ashley Lee. As a foster based organization, WHARF depends on the kindness of a small group of volunteers and donators to keep their journey of healing and helping animals on course. Visiting from PAR, Heather Stewart helped organize the reunion. “Our PAR supporters love every dog that walks into our shelter, and we don’t stop loving them when they leave for their Canadian chance at a home. Seeing these happy dogs thrive, is part of what keeps us going.” While unable to join us for the reunion, Jan adds, “To get an opportunity to see once again the dogs that we have rescued and healed in a real home with a real family is the best reward we could ask for.” When Courtney Flaska adopted her beautiful Sonja, she surmised what many of us have come to understand, in that she had found her “canine soulmate.” Stephanie Swartz and family agree, “Tig is always so happy and makes us laugh aloud each and every day. We are so blessed to have local stories...local people...local pets

found WHARF and our Tig.” Anne Kaplan, co-guardian to Abby and Mikey, “I am so grateful to WHARF and to PAR for giving these wonderful dogs a chance to grace my life with their joy.” Leona Waddell does not know what she would do without her little Tequila! “My daughter passed away in August of 2010 and I got Tequila just before Christmas in 2011. I swear that my daughter sent Tequila to me for Christmas.” From Jan in Mexico, “If you haven’t been here, and haven’t seen how horrible it can be on the streets for these dogs, you have no way of knowing what a miracle you have helped to create.” Another PAR board member Pat Faulstich, sums up our reasons for adopting from outside our borders maybe best, “Love knows no boundaries. I truly believe the loyalty and love they give is their way of showing gratitude.” For us, this is true. And Abby and Mikey, and all the other Mexi-mutts, are living (and tail wagging) proof. Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) My name is Barbosa. When you first greet me my instinct is to gain a bit of distance... but with a little patience I come around, darting in and out of my favourite hiding spots, until I get close enough to handle. With a couple strokes of your finger I begin to chirp and squeak and our bond of trust has started. I’m 3yrs old, full of life, and looking for a home in which to play, eat, and enrich the life of the person who adopts me.

I’m a 2yr old girl named Marigold with a dashing silver grey coat that I wear with sophisticated stoicism. I love to play with teaser toys and stuffies. Provide me with these things and lots of love, and I’ll want for little else! All in all, I am an amazing cat who will bring plenty of love and joy to the lucky new home that adopts me. Give me a pet, watch me purr, and feel the bond between us strengthen immeasurably.

I am Sprite, and along with my siblings (Creamsicle, 7-Up, Pepsi) and our buddy Buzz I am an albino. We have been here for a while now; it’s tough to say why, but we can definitely rule out our personalities. We are affectionate, playful and like to be handled. Maybe it’s our red eyes that make people turn away? If so, look past our eyes just a little and you’ll see big friendly hearts, with lots of love to give.

I am an adorable little fluffball, who loves to run and play, named Bo. I know all my basic commands (and then some) and I am currently working on reducing my reactivity around new people. I would do best in a quiet home that could provide daily walks without any children.

Odin here! I am a handsome, affectionate, and energetic guy. I am still timid around men, but I’m working on that. I need plenty of exercise, and I love being outdoors, but I also enjoy relaxing and snuggling up with the family. I am working on mastering my basic commands.

I’m a great dog with a goofy personality named Rick. I am also very affectionate and bond quickly. I love playing with other dogs but don’t really like cats much. I’m a quick learner and, although I don’t look like it with my short legs, I am very fast and can jump really high!

I’m Zaya! I’m a very sweet girl but still a bit timid. I’m working on that though, and learning my basic commands. I have tons of energy and I love to run around the yard, play fetch, and chew on toys. I can be a bit mischievous, so I need to be supervised so I don’t get into trouble.

Rescue 100

Have you been looking for a new furry friend? Well search no longer because I’m your gal! I’m a 6yr old Paint mare named Allison and I’m now completely rehabilitated, strong and healthy. I’m ready and eager to move on to my new Forever Home... so what are you waiting for? Meet me at the barn; I’ll be waiting for you!

My name is Sofia and I’m looking for someone who will realize my true potential (it’s hiding behind my shyness). I’m only about 3yrs old, so I still have plenty of time to learn and I have come a long way already with the help of all of the great volunteers. I’m looking for someone who has the patience to bring me to the next level, and I promise to give you my all!

My name is Sarah and I’m a stunning 6yr old Dark Bay mare... but it’s my personality that really makes me shine. I’m such a gentle soul, and I have so much love to give. When I first arrived I was extremely thin and malnourished, but I have since flourished and I’m more than ready to find a new home and continue my journey to a better life.

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) Surprisingly, I was unclaimed at the pound. My name is Benji and I’m a 2yr old Wheaton Terrier X. I have a fun loving personality and my manners are excellent... you will love my one ear up, one down look!

Everyone calls me Bella. I am a gentle 3yr girl who loves to get attention, and I can hardly wait to find a new loving home. I’m great with other cats and can’t wait to shower you with attention. Please consider giving me a chance.

Would you like a sweet, rambunctious teenaged cat? Then you’ll love me... my name is Charlie. I am 6mths old and part Maine Coon. I love to play and I love attention. I also love other furry friends. I’m all about the love!

They call me Cuddles. I’m a lovely, young mother who was found roaming the countryside. My kittens have now been weaned and adopted, so it’s finally my turn to find my own loving family. I am truly a fabulous companion.

Hello, my name is Patty and I’m a young gal who can’t get enough attention from you humans! So much so that I’d prefer to be the only animal in my new home. Can I be your one and only? I can’t wait for my new start!

My name is Jewels and I’m a typical BUSY puppy. I’m a 5mth old Shepherd who loves to go for walks and adores playtime. All I need is a nice home willing to spend the time to help me learn how to be the best dog I can be.

Wow... I must say that I’m a very stunning kitty! I am Perdita and I’m not just great looks either. I’m a VERY affectionate and gentle girl who loves laps. I’m only 1yr old, and I have a lifetime of love to give to a very lucky home.

Good day, I’m Ruggles. I am 1.5yrs old with a smashing cream tabby coat. I’m a lovely young guy who spent two long months in a pound, but now I’m living it up in a foster home. The only thing better would be a home of my very own.

Bark! I’m Sasha and I’m about 4mths old. I am a Shepherd/ Rotti X with a very sweet and exuberant nature. I’m trying to find a family of my very own. I’m going to be a large girl, but that means there will be a lot more of me to hug.

Pit Bulls For Life Foundation Hello, I am Thomas and I came all the way from Port Alberni BC. I had a very rough life on a First Nations Community as a stray where I was frequently the victim of both human & dog attacks. Good thing I’m all about the love! I am good with other dogs, and I am a human hugging machine. I even love kids!

Infinite Woofs Animal Rescue (iWAR) My name is Acorn and I am a Mini Rex. I am 8yrs old and I love to hop in the grass and snuggle. I have always been an indoor bunny but I do love to play (supervised) outside. I wasn’t around children before so I am a little unsure, but I am slowly getting use to them.

My name is Cookie and I came with my babies, Crumble and Brownie. I guess our previous owner didn’t want the hassle, so they deserted us in a cardboard box on the end of someone’s driveway. My babies have now been adopted so it’s time for me to find my new family!

My name is Ahren and I was found as a stray. I was transferred from the pound and I’m now in foster care. I am a very happy kitty who likes to play and cuddle. Everyone tells me all the time how handsome my grey coloring is. I’m seriously ready to find my forever home, please.

My name is Lightning and I came from the Northwest Territories with my brother. I had some separation anxiety but my foster mom was able to get me calmed down and comfortable being in a kennel. Everyone says I’m very smart and pick things up quickly.

Sundance Canine Rescue

i, my name is Koda. I was rescued on April 29 by an amazing lady who cared enough to bring me to Sundance Canine Rescue Society. My rescuers realized I had sustained an injury and they immediately rushed me to a great Vet (I know, me a dog....admitting to knowing a great doctor!) Dr. Thomas Sebastian of Family Petcare Clinic.

ophie had a sad beginning, she was picked up from a rural reserve with an old broken left leg and nutritional deficiencies so her bones could not form properly, therefore she had a very difficult time walking. Sophie also had a large laceration to the back of her left ear that had to get stitches, a broken tail and worms. After staying with iWar for a couple of months to heal she found her forever home and is so in love with her new family! Here’s what they had to say: September 2, 2013: Thank you so much for the rescue, care and support of Sophie, our new dog. She is a wonderful addition to our family. My daughters love her so much and we enjoy having such a sweet and loving dog in our home. We just moved into a new house and we are all starting anew. Sophie has helped not only my girls to adjust to our new home and lifestyle with ease, but myself as well. She joined our family and accepted her new home with grace and love. As a rescue dog, we are grateful to have saved her life and we are learning how we can help her best. She was very timid and scared of many things. We had to teach her to play fetch as every time we threw the ball for her, she thought we were throwing ‘something’ at her and would run and hide. Because she is so scared, she likes to dig and hide under things, especially in a storm! With love and patience we are confident we can support her through her fears. She has learned many new things and loves to go for walks, play with children, other dogs and even cats! We are truly grateful that she is a part of our family and we look forward to many happy adventures with her. I truly appreciate all that Infinite WOOFS has done for Sophie and so many other rescue animals, keep up the great work, you are helping not only the animals, but families too! 22

After a thorough and painful examination the good people determined that my hind end had suffered some kind of trauma. My tail was gone and the wound was completely filled with pus. I was given a very strong dose of antibiotics and treated for fleas and worms. Shortly after, I was put under general anesthesia and the Vet removed the last vertebra of the tail and cleared the necrotic tissue in hopes of easing my pain. The last vertebra had to be removed as it was stuck near my anus which isn’t where it is supposed to be. I was on IV fluids for a few days to help me fight the infection. I was getting morphine for my pain but I was still very uncomfortable. My incredible foster mom took me back to the vet’s office to have another exam....this is what happened this time. My vet recommended another surgery to ease my pain. He removed 2 more vertebrae’s and the remaining necrotic tissue from the tail and a small part of my anus. The good news is I don’t have any pain and I have healed up very nicely! I was in an amazing foster home with two awesome furry girls that helped me get through my fear of other dogs. I love to play and be near my humans. My story does have an incredible ending! On September 2, 2013 my Furever family adopted me! I am really enjoying my new life now! I am finally HOME! local stories...local people...local pets

Zoe’s Animal Rescue Society Hi there, my name is Dozer. As you can see I am a very handsome Shepherd X. I have such beautiful coloring don’t you think? My siblings Bob and Autumn have already found their forever homes and I really am looking forward to finding mine too! I am doing so well in my foster home. Though a bit timid at first with new people, I quickly warm up and want to play and give kisses. I do great with other animals too.

Hi, I’m Jacquie! I’ve been though some very difficult times recently, as my sister and I were abandoned in an apartment complex. Thank goodness ZOE’s saved us! Since then, it’s been a blast hanging out with my foster mom and her many cats and dogs. I was really nervous when I first arrived, hiding under a chair for nearly a week, but that’s all in the past and I’m ready to find my own home again.

My name is Ebony! What do you think of my long beautiful black coat? Now that my kittens are weaned I will be looking for a new home too! My foster mom says that I was a stray before coming to her so I am not used to all this good attention from people. I am more of a love from afar cat but that doesn’t mean I love you any less. I’m just content to give you love blinks from a distance.

I’m Kiimak. I’m shy around new people but if you sit long enough, I come out of my shell. I like to lick your fingers and nudge your hand for attention. I play with the other dogs in my foster home. I do come around after awhile of getting to know you then I enjoy cuddling! I also get along with other dogs and yes even those feline creatures!

Hi there, my name is Prada! And I am a beautiful orange kitten from what is called the designer litter. I love to play and explore. This world is so big for such a little girl like me! I really am a fun girl to have around. My mom and siblings were found in such filthy conditions, that Zoe’s were quick to take us all in to give us a much better life.

Sully here! I’m a big, gorgeous Akita X that is absolutely adorable. I’m about 1.5yrs old, 60lbs, and good with other dogs (with meet and greet first). I love kids and all people and I’m learning it’s ok to live indoors. Everyone who meets me says I’m smart and it should take no time at all for me to fit in with new pet parents... I’m excited to go home!

Hello there, my name is Pepe le Mew. As you can see I am a beautiful black and white 1yr old guy. I am still young so I love to play. In fact I just know my playful antics will put a smile on your face. I am extremely friendly and I get along with anyone no matter the age. I am living in my foster home with other dogs and cats right now.

I am called Lola! I am a really pretty Tabby momma who is looking to find my forever home! I really love people, I could sit right beside you or on your lap and just get brushed for hours. I’m also inquisitive and love to explore, my foster mom puts on my nice little harness and I get to go outside to check things out. It’s so much fun!

Hi I’m Jupiter! I’m an Australian Shepherd X. Below is Venus. We’re still shy but cuddly and will take some time to come out

While all kinds of pets can bring children pleasure, it is important to choose a pet that is right for your family, your home, and your lifestyle; and one that your child can help care for.

of our shells. We are going to be high energy! The man raising us was really excited to get help finding us homes and getting our mom spayed, so that’s why my sister, Venus and I came into Zoe’s care. Stay tuned for more about us!

Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Laverne here and I came with my sister Shirley. We’re like matching bookends with regular sized bodies on short little legs. We are excellent with kids, dogs & cats! If by chance, you are looking for 2 great dogs we can even be adopted together!

My name is Roscoe and I was rescued at about 4mths old without ever having interaction with people. I am very bright and I’m getting braver by the day. I’m even starting to play with my toys. My tail is no longer tucked between my legs and is out wagging now!

If you are looking for a handsome boy then look no further. My name is Liam and while I do like other dogs I prefer them on the calmer side. Cats and small children are not my thing. I love going for walks and really enjoy my treats!

Spay Neuter Action Program (SNAP) Hello, my name is Princess and I was only 5lbs when I was rescued. I was very dehydrated and nearly died but I am doing well now. I’m not very fond of other cats so I would love my very own home where I can keep you all to myself please.

I’m a beautiful1yr old girl named Noel. I’m extremely shy and I may hide for a few days in my new home but once I know I’m safe I will be your closest friend. I don’t mind another cat or dog in the house as long as they don’t chase after me. Who likes running anyway?

My name is Willow and I was recently returned to SNAP because I loved my person too much... yes... really! I am a quiet loving girl who just wants to put down some permanent roots and I’m looking forward to life with my forever family.

hen the Edmonton Eskimo’s president Len Rhodes contacted EHS CEO Stephanie McDonald, to discuss partnership opportunities, we were thrilled. Both organizations have prominent roles in the community and speak to large audiences. Through this partnership, our goal is to bridge these audiences and present humane messaging in a way that we’ve not presented it before, so that it has a wider and more impactful spread. We also wish to show a larger audience the amazing work that is done at EHS on a daily basis, whether it be our medical staff healing and comforting our animals, the work our behavioral specialists do with cats and dogs to prepare them for the adoption gallery, or the tremendous volunteer contributions that go such a long way towards making the animals in our care as comfortable and free of stress as possible.

So where to start? Well, here in the animal sheltering world we love great public service announcements, because they so effectively raise awareness about important issues, like the benefits of adopting shelter animals and the importance of spaying or neutering pets, among many other things. These messages are important because they help save lives. After a bit of back-and-forth brainstorming between our communications departments, the EHS and the Edmonton Eskimos set about working on a series of PSAs. The EHS took on the responsibility of writing the story boards and scripts, which was a really fun project. local stories...local people...local pets

Our creative team thought of ways to pair burly football players with cute companion animals in a way that still delivered our key messages. By now you likely have a mental image of a 300-pound linebacker snuggling a kitten – it’s an endearing and funny image. Our team’s concepts capitalized on this and developed five storyboards and scripts that use charm, laughter, cats, dogs, and football players as the basis. Without giving away too many details, we can say that one delivers important messaging about spaying or neutering your pet. Another drives home the point that real men love cats. And yet another showcases the talents and agility of shelter animals. Eventually, there will be a series showing why cats make ideal pets for men. The first two PSAs will begin airing on CTV and Global at the start of October, at which point they will also be available live on our YouTube channel. Keep watch for them and be sure to let us know what you think via social media or by contacting us at communications2@ edmontonhumanesociety.com. Lending A Helping Hand Hello, my name is Kevin. I am a grade six student from Muriel Martin School. This year I did a service project for an organization that is really important to me, SCARS. I love all animals; from dogs, to cats, to geckos. My family has five pets; a cat, a fish, a guinea pig, and two gerbils.

up having two babies. Lauren kept the mom and babies together for many months, but as the babies got bigger, it was time to see if she could find them a new home or they would have to go to the Humane Society. As I had been thinking about a pet of my own, Idecided to adopt one.

Our cat, Kitkat, was rescued from a school playground sometime in the late fall (snow on the ground) about five years ago. She, who was a kitten at the time, was found by a couple of school children. They brought her into the school which my Mom worked at. The sta at the school tried to find the owner, but had no success. Our previous cat Minx, whom we had for 18 years had passed away in the summer, so after a couple of days and no luck finding the owner of this kitten, my mom decided to bring her home.

For my service project I wanted to find a way to help the animals that get rescued by the volunteers at SCARS. So I decided to do a bottle drive. I typed up a letter saying who I was and that I wanted to raise money to help these animals. I delivered the letters to families in my neighborhood. When it was time, my family and I picked up the bottles. In total I raised $200 which I know will help. SCARS is really important to me because of what they do and because they too care about animals!

My sister and I both have our own pets. Meghan has 2 gerbils; Cupcake and Nibbles, and I have a guinea pig named Poppy. Poppy is another rescued animal that we have. My neighbor, Lauren got a guinea pig. It turned out that her guinea pig was pregnant and ended
