International Homeless Animals’ Day 2013 August 17 ®

The International Society for Animal Rights raises awareness on pet overpopulation each year on the third Saturday of August. Organizations from around the world join ISAR by participating with candlelight vigils, dog walks, adopt-a-thons, open houses, spay/neuter clinics, microchip clinics, blessings of the animals, and heartfelt speeches.

“By coming together on International Homeless Animals’ Day you can support ISAR in letting the world know we will not tolerate the senseless killing that continues to take the lives of innocent dogs, cats, puppies and kittens simply because there are not enough good homes for them. Together, we will continue to be a voice for the animals, and continue to demand an end to the suffering these animals face each day.”

If you or an organization you work with is interested in participating please contact ISAR for a complimentary downloadable package.

Underdogs Rescue My name is Arya and I weigh about 85lbs. I’m super friendly with people and I love car rides. I’m very well behaved, but I have been grumpy with other dogs. I don’t know how to play and need more socialization with dogs and a home that is willing to work with me. I am a sweet girl, but I haven’t done well with small pets; the temptation to chase is overwhelming!

My name is Mia and after all this training I am a dream to walk on leash. I am still shy, but once I warm up I am all cuddles & belly rubs. I need a home with no young children that will continue helping me to build my confidence. Another dog to help show me the way would be great. I am already house & kennel trained. Underdogs Rescue gave me a chance, will you?

BOOM! Attracting attention is what I do; it’s my mantra to success! My name is Puma and I am great with all dogs. Cats are like the paparazzi to me, although ok at first, I’d rather they not hang around. I am great with kids and love going for jogs. I just want to find a family that can tan in my rays of sunshine. They must also have a camera.... just saying!

My name is Bru. I didn’t do well in the shelter but now I’m in a foster home getting training and fantastic is my middle name. I am amazing with all dogs and do well with cats, I just ignore them... cats be crazy! I am a curious, polite, and devoted boy. When I trust, it’s with everything I have. My dark days are over, bring on the adventure!

Alberta Animal Services - Red Deer

My name is Cleo and I am 10mths old. I love to cuddle & play and I would prefer to be your only companion so I can soak up all the love myself!!! I have been waiting a while for my new home but I know it’s going to be a forever home so it’s worth the wait!

I am a Collie/Shepherd X called Myles and I’m around 3yrs old. My eye was removed due to a serious infection caused by a porcupine quill. My hair will grow back soon and I’ll be as handsome as ever! I would love a calm home with older children.

Everyone calls me Luna! I am about 2yrs old and I just LOVE to lounge around. I have a passion for cat furniture, the taller the better, and I would really love a quiet home with lots of love and attention. If you can give a gal like me a good home come by to visit me.

Hi, my name is Teddy and I am 1yr old German Shepherd which makes me a smart cookie! I am from Yellowknife and I love to play with other dogs. I am quite well behaved, but I crave routine and will do best in an experienced home with consistent training.

CAUTION DOGS AT PLAY

My name is Mable and I am 3yrs old. I was rescued with my 6 babies but they are all adopted now and it’s finally my turn! I enjoy sun bathing and looking out the window. My naps are very important to me but as soon as I’m done I will come check in to cuddle.

I’m a 1yr old Coonhound X named Ruthie. I love to track & play and enjoy dogs of all sizes. I already know my basics and I’m ready to learn some new tricks. Being ignored is not an option but if you’re ready to have some fun then I’m the hound for you!

Tail Of The Month by Jamie Hunter

Sophie by: Emma Pearse

This is a different type of rescue story but truly an amazing display of tenacity and devotion on the canine front. Sophie is a 3yr old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) who falls overboard on a family trip while sailing in the Great Barrier Reef. The Griffith family thought Sophie was lost forever but, after swimming up to 24hrs in shark infested waters, Sophie manages to make it to a small island. Here she scavenged for food and survived for 5 long months before miraculously being rescued and reunited with her family. From the devastation caused by losing Sophie at sea and the immense family grief from her loss... to the pure elation of being reunited, author Emma Pearse takes us on a fantastic journey that is sure to fire up emotions in any pet lover. By taking us step by step on Sophie’s personal adventure, and including interviews with locals who tried to rescue her and witnessed the reunion, it is easy to become emotionally invested. Pearse delivers a wonderful, feel good, read that celebrates the human-animal bond and is sure to delight readers of all ages. 8

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart) I’m Connor and I am a 2yr old Husky X. I am a big boy, but I love to cuddle and I really like kids. I would do best in a home with an experienced owner where I am the only animal as I’m a little shy with other dogs. An active family that is ready and willing to continue regular training with me would be perfect!

My name is Denali and I am a 1yr old Shepherd/ Chow X. I love playing with both my canine & feline foster siblings, and I like kids too. I would do best in a calm environment with older children. I am a very quick learner and I’m mastering all of my basic commands. I am also great running along side a bike.

Hello, I’m a 5yr old Lab X named Spike. My pal Quills and I had a bad run-in with a porcupine, and that’s how I got my name, but now I’m practically good as new! Check out hart’s website or Facebook to see how far I’ve come. I love dogs of all sizes and I seriously can’t get enough affection from my people.

I’m Quills and I am a 5yr Lab X. Spike and I were both living as strays when we a had bad run-in with a porcupine. After getting wonderful veterinary care I’m feeling great! I love dogs of all sizes and I just can’t wait to have my very own people so I can get endless attention and be the best dog I can be.

My name is Kahlua and I’m a cuddly & loving 3yr old Rotti/ Sheltie X. I love hanging out with other dogs, and although I can get a little bossy at times I take feedback from other dogs well. I’m currently working on my basic commands. My foster family says I would make the perfect lap dog but I’m just too big for that!

Beagle Paws Rescue My name is Suzie and I’m just about the nicest little Beagle you’ll ever meet. I’m amazing with children and I get along well with dogs, cats & other pets. I am crate trained and will ask to go outside if the doggie door is closed. When I’m happy I “talk” with quiet little baying noises. I will go to great lengths to get to food so my new home will have to be very diligent about keeping edibles safe... but I promise to hoover up all the crumbs on the floor!

Howie here! I’m a very loving boy and I have been great with other dogs. I am also house & crate trained and walk well on leash. I am afraid of thunder but if I’m in my crate I’m a happy guy. I’m probably around 2-3yrs old and weigh about 60lbs. I’m just an all around wonderful guy.

My name is Annie (formerly Chip) and although nervous around small children, I am great with other dogs and cats. I LOVE tennis balls, know my boundaries and basic commands, and really want to please. I am SUPER high energy so I really need an active home.

I’m a 1yr old Border Collie/Blue Heeler X named Jasper. I know my basic commands, love to cuddle and won’t hesitate to flop to the ground for a good belly rub. I am very active as I come from two working-class backgrounds. I like to keep busy!

Hello everybody, my name is Jenny and I am about 11 wks old. I came in with my brother Joey and we are both looking for new homes. I am a very sweet & loveable kitten who loves to play. I am a little more outgoing then my brother Joey.

I’m a precocious 5mth old pup named Laney. I may be a Border Collie/Lab/Terrier X all wrapped up in this active & intelligent little package. I love my toys, love the dogs, love the cat, love my yard, love/hate the squirrels, love my pool & love my peeps!

I am Joey! I came into care with my sister Jenny and we are about 3mths old. We were rescued from a northern pound just in the nick of time. I am a bit shy, but very sweet. I really love to curl up like a pretzel safe in my foster mom’s arms.

I absolutely love people and I always aim to please.

My name is Stash and I am a 7yr old purebred Chocolate Lab who just wants to be part of a family pack. I have spent my life in a garage with few walks, and often irregular feedings. All I want is to belong. I am happy to be low man on the totem pole; I just want to be included.

My name is Uhura and I am manning the Starship “Foster Home,” (according to my Trekkie foster dad!). I am a 3mth old Rotti/Doberman X. I only weigh 20lbs now, but check out my HUGE feet! I like the resident cat; she lets me clean her ears. I am a high energy & very loving girl.

An

Animal

Shelter

In the world of Social Media

By Travis Grant

S

ocial media has been around for a relatively short while, but it has quickly become a fixture of modern culture – on this point I think we can all agree. Look at almost any ad campaign and you’ll see a “follow us on facebook” plea or some clever hashtag for legions of people to tweet. Social media has become an incredibly powerful tool for having real-time conversations that overcome the communication road blocks of old, such as geography and even time. Social media is a public square that never sleeps. The online world of social media creates incredible opportunities to engage people and spread messages like never before. In our case, it has helped promote animals in our care, our programs and services, and the clinics and events we’re hosting, while affording us opportunities to spread humane messaging staff members that our messaging would have this kind of reach by the end of the decade, they would prob12

ably scoff in disbelief. It’s amazing how far communications have come in so little time. The Edmonton Humane Society has always tried to be an early adopter of social media platforms. We began building our Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube audiences about 5 years ago, and we’ve kept pace with the changing trends in user habits and the ways in which people integrate social media into their lives. It hasn’t always been easy – to this day, no one claims to have social media completely figured out; but we’ve managed to grow a large and diverse following across several social media platforms that have, in recent years, come to include Instagram (a photography app), Vine (an app that allows users to make 6-second videos), and Google+, which essentially combines the best of Twitter and Facebook, giving rising to something all its own. Although we don’t have a precise means of measuring the local stories...local people...local pets

impact of our social media presence (at least not yet), we know from anecdotal evidence that many people are drawn into our shelter because of EHS’ social media presence. Once people are through the door, they have the option to adopt a pet, purchase supplies from Bingo’s Pet Shop, make a donation in support of shelter animals, or just take note of our magnificent facility and let others in our community know about it. Whichever the outcome, it’s all good for our shelter and the animals in our care. Adopting social media platforms and building audiences marked an important first step. Now that our presence is established and we have people’s attention, we’re focused on interaction with our audience. We offer pet-related advice, answer questions about our programs and services, share lighthearted moments, and even engage in or moderate serious debate from time to time. Pet lovers are a passionate lot. One of the best forms of interaction we get on social media involves those who’ve adopted companion animals from EHS and want to show how loved their new pets are in their new forever homes. For us, this reinforces our role as a place of new beginnings for animals, many of whom come into our care as anonymous creatures, with histories unknown. It’s indescribably satisfying to see a dog in his new life, going on nature walks, swimming in a lake, playing with other dogs at the dog park, or just lazing in a sunny spot on the living room carpet. Or a cat, perched atop her own private scratch tower, batting at enrichment toys, or endearing people with her feline pretentions. Or a rabbit, chewing a favourite toy, hopping around a backyard, or dining – nibble by speedy nibble – on a leafy green. These are affirming moments that validate why we’re here, serving as advocates and giving voice to animals who might not have it otherwise. Social media makes this possible on a larger scale than ever before, and it allows all of us – EHS staff members and the public at large – to see the fulfilment that shelter animals can bring to people’s lives. And it’s incredible. prm

Tails From Home Halina with her dog Mr. Barquharson

was part Border Collie, which was a perfect mix for a perfect dog for Hal. That was 3½ years ago, and in that time both Hal and Chuck have grown together into quite the pair.

By: Amelia Duplessis

H

alina’s Autism has given us challenges right from her birth. From unending colic that pushed out an umbilical hernia, fear of electrical appliances, low motor function, to the public meltdowns. Oh, the public meltdowns. We finally got referred for an Autism assessment when she was 3. Immediately I contacted the local Autism support group for help. They informed me of a service dog agency that could help us with the difficulties we had going out in public. Mostly that Hal was growing - FAST - and I was running out of options to keep her near me. She was a serious flight risk. We sat on their waitlist for 9 months only to be told, after they brought a dog to our house, that we did not qualify because the kids were too small. Hal was heartbroken when the dog left our house. My husband and I were very upset. But while we were going to be service dog-less, my daughter’s joy at a dog made us decide to get a regular-ol-pup. What we got was much more special than that. We knew what kind of breed we were looking for and found Beagle Paws, a Canada-wide Beagle rescue organization. Our local coordinator, May, met our family and got to understand what we were looking for in a dog. A little while later we were presented with a pup from Newfoundland, whom we adopted and named Charlie Barquharson. As he grew he revealed that he 14

pet rescue magazine

August/September 2013

Charlie is incredibly in tune to Hal – howling when she cries, sitting patiently with her with a paw-of-support on her lap, or a little kiss check-in now and then. We don’t get to go out in public together much because he doesn’t have a little vest, but when we do Hal gets tethered to him and he patiently lets her tug at him, always keeping near to me. Hal is his charge, and Charlie takes his responsibility seriously (and lovingly). It turned out being rejected for a service dog was the best thing that could have happened to us. In addition to Mr. Barquharson (and another Beagle Paws adoptee Karl Puppington), we opened our doors to foster animals last year which has been another wonderful experience for not only Hal, but her younger sister as well. The way they see it, it is their job to give animals that have had a bad life a good life at our home until they can find their forever home. Many paws and claws have gone through our doors already, and the girls have gained a great sense of responsibility and connectedness to the world through caring for animals. Autism can be very isolating. What makes it more difficult is Hal has to be home schooled, so always having a friend at home helps make life not so lonely. You hear talk of how a rescue dog is thankful to their owners, but these owners are thankful to their rescue dog. You made us better people, Charlie Barquharson. Thank-you. prm local stories...local people...local pets

Little Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society

Hello, my name is Juliet and I am looking for my very own Romeo who will provide me with everything I desire! I am 14wks old and like all kittens I love to play. I am social with other cats and just waiting for my chance to go home.

My name is Charger! I am about 16wks old. I’m full of spark and energy. I love to play hard with my brothers and sisters and then curl up for a cuddle on my foster’s lap to re-charge. If you can you give me a home I’d very much appreciate it.

Hands Up!! Billy The Kid here, that’s me on the left. My brother Jessie James and I would love to hijack your home together. We are special little outlaws in more ways than one. We are about 5mths old very smart and we are learing to walk on a leash. Another cool thing about us –we are polydactyl kittens which means we have extra toes... many of them between us. If you want double trouble, snuggles and cuddles then we are the boys for you!

I am Lincoln, Charger’s brother. We were born in a commercial yard and caught as feral kittens, you’d never know that today though. We are lovely boys and if you are looking for a kitten perhaps you consider adopting us both...we do have fun!

My name is Georgie Porgie, I used to kiss the girls and make them cry, but now I’m neutered and a good boy! When I came into care I had a an abscess behind my ear, but now it’s all healed so I can move on to my real home anytime you want.

Oh yes... just lazing around daydreaming again. That’s why my name is Dream. I also have dreamy eyes too. I’m a young 2yr old who is looking to settle down. I have been in rescue over a year so it’s time to snooze in my own home.

Excuse me... hello? I’m little Lilac and I am the sister of Rosie and Honeysuckle. I’m a curious little girl and like all kittens I love to play then curl

Animal Rescuer: Burnout Gila Todd

An inside look into the minds of most animal rescuers.

T

his won’t be one of my regular articles, all nicely organized and written as an AP style news piece. You will get this one from my heart instead of my head, as my feelings on this matter run very deep inside of me. As a young child dragging home broken and unwanted animals I could never have imagined it was some sort of calling for me. I never dreamed I would spend my adult years trying to save almost every unwanted pet I encountered. But here I am, in mid life, with a houseful of pets discarded by others, in a circle of friends who live just exactly as I do, trying to rescue the thrown away pets of the world. Rescuing animals: we live it, eat it, sleep it, breathe it, and take it everywhere we go with us. It’s a calling, a gut reaction, a determination to right the wrongs of others, and to save innocent lives as we speak out for those creatures that have no voice of their own.

Hi my name is Bishop and I am currently at Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, 359 Cree Lane, Jackson, Mo. 63755. I am a Pit mix and heartworm positive. I am undergoing treatments for my condition and will be well and ready for adoption very soon. If you are interested in me please call! Telephone #573-243-9823.

Most of us live paycheck to paycheck and do without much so that our animals can eat and see the veterinarian. It’s no different than being the parent of a pack of two legged toddlers. They need, we provide, and many times to the detriment of ourselves. But we do it all, with no regrets. With the vast numbers of homeless pets in our nation today, we realize that we just can’t save them all, even though we try as we give it our best shot day after day. Our hearts break a thousand times a week as we see animals euthanized because there is simply no place for them to go. We open our email accounts to people begging for help, looking for a place to re-

home their pets, for one reason or another. Our phones blow up with calls and texts for the same reasons. We open our Facebook accounts only to scroll through pages and pages of pets needing homes, some who have suffered starvation, illness, and abuse, and many who have died at the hands of heartless humans. Almost everywhere we venture outside of our homes we see pets in need. It never ends. The numbers are simply just too great.

page? Oh, and just don’t leave the house.

Amongst the rescuing I have done, I’ve taken thousands of images of pets trying to get them recognized and into loving homes. In the midst of my five page job description (when once employed by a shelter) it just boiled down to my doing whatever it took to help the animals, and I did it gladly, with no complaints. Some of the work was dirty, hot, cold, and many times heartbreaking. Budget cuts ended my employment with the shelter, as economics do so often with many programs in animal rescue. But having become known for my efforts, working in rescue didn’t end with the job. It seldom does for any of us.

Why so difficult to leave all the craziness behind? Because for most, being a rescuer is not a conscience choice we make. People just don’t wake up one morning and say “Wow. I think I will be an animal rescuer.” It’s a drive that lives inside of us and not something we have consciously made the choice to do. To save the life of an innocent is just a natural reaction for most, and we do it without batting an eye.

Continuing to work with animal rescue, volunteering any time and skills I can muster up, and being a shelter board member, I am blessed to work with some of the best people in the business. People who live, eat, and breathe animal rescue in the same fashion (or more so) than I do. Being close to so many in this business, I see their mix of joy and disappointment on a regular basis and my heart breaks for them when they feel the burn of this calling; the burn deep inside of each of us when we have done everything right only to see an animal put down because no one wants it. The burn inside we feel when we’ve rescued one that’s been so ill that even with the finest medical care just isn’t strong enough to make it. The burn inside when we encounter animals that have been abused, and sometimes killed, by the hands of a human being. And to feel the fury of the latter is a scorn like no other. It will make a person look at the human race through tainted eyes and make one cautious of almost everyone. I watch my fellow rescuers struggle with the choices before them when the burn happens, and it happens to every single one of us at one time or another. That point that we get to when we can’t see through the fury and the tears. When we can’t sleep at night for the atrocities we’ve seen that play over and over again in our heads. For the souls we’ve see in the eyes of needy animals who we’ve failed to save, even though we did everything in our power to do so. Does one stay in rescue and do what can be done and be satisfied with the results? Or step away from the whole mess, stop checking email, shut off the phone and unfriend every rescuer, crossposter, shelter, on our Facebook local stories...local people...local pets

In the decade that I have been active with animal rescue, I have only seen a handful of rescuers actually be able to pull away and stay out of the scenario completely. Even those will admit it is a struggle to stand back and let others do the job. Though some have chosen to step back and stay out, the urge to save never goes away.

We go out and about and see an animal in distress and we automatically flock to it trying to fix whatever ailment it may have, and if we can’t fix it, we find someone who can. We see abuse and instead of idly standing by, we react to stop whatever abuse might be occurring, and many times will do so without regard to our own well being. We get a call, or an email and know that on the other end there is a helpless animal that’s whole life is being thrown into uncertainty. We’re a breed all our own. It’s an impulse for us and not something that we can shut off just because our hearts are aching and we just don’t think we can take anymore. We react like we breathe, without thinking to do it; it just happens. And somehow the numbers we save keep us going even though the many we fail to save haunts us, always. It’s all a question of how much we can really take. With 10,000 animals dying in shelters, every single day in the US alone, it’s hard to step back and pace oneself, but it’s something anyone in animal rescue must learn to do. We must learn to recognize the burn, step back a few paces, and find a way to regroup before we hit that point of no return. A point we would forever regret. I write this for all my fellow rescuers who understand every word, and for those of you out there who think we are all crazy and cannot fathom why we put ourselves through it. prm

Rescue 100 Hello, my name is Mamere, which means “my mother” because of all my motherly qualities. I’m approximately 13yrs young and have many more years of love to give. I would be an amazing companion horse because of my gentle personality. Will you be my forever home?

My name is Gidget and I’m a very gentle 10yr old mare. I have a wonderful temperament and will make a great addition to any family. When I first arrived I was very thin, but I have flourished and I’m now ready to move on to a new home. I’m very willing & eager to please, and I can’t wait to find my very own family!

My name is Pepper and I’ve been here for a few months now. Although I’m enjoying the good life here just grazing and hanging out, I really want to find my forever home. I’m just 3yrs old and ready to start learning new things. I’m a little nervous at first, but I’m also curious, eager and so FULL of potential!

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) I’m a social & intelligent 17yr old Cockatoo named Mickey. I am very clever, speak well (I’m even learning how to “meow” and make a barking noise!) and I love human company. I am not well suited to apartments as I will occasionally shriek, especially when I want more attention. I also have a history of biting and need an experienced parrot home that will give me lots of attention and time out of my cage every day.

Hello there everyone! My name is Opi and I really want a second chance. I’m a 6mth old neutered ferret and I bunk with my buddy Jax at the EHS shelter. We came in together but we don’t have to be adopted together, although we’d really like that! We are very active and quite affectionate. If you are looking for a ferret as a pet, please consider one of us and contact the Edmonton Humne Society today.

Hello, my name is Toby. I am a very sweet and friendly 2yr old Schnauzer X. I love to play and would really like an active home. I am fine with kids who are appropriate with me. I am house & crate trained, and I already know some of my basic commands. I can be quite vocal and will chat for hours if I’m bored. I am also very clever and appear to get along well with other dogs.

Looking for a lifelong sidekick? My name is Lilo and I am 2yrs old. With my broad nose and polydactyl paws I likely have some Maine Coon in my family history. I am a very sweet and quiet girl who hides from canines but bonds quickly with gentle human souls.

Hello rescue fans! My name is LuLu and I am looking to be a self published author. I was busy collecting stories on the streets before rescue but I’m ready to settle down now. I am 8mths old, very clever, and have adorable tortoise shell markings. Do you have room for a bookworm?

In a past life I was a Japanese female Shaman, but these days I’m a gorgeous green eyed gal named Miko (with a signature black beauty mark!) that provides hilarious social entertainment. I love my people but I can be a tad selective about my preferred feline companions.

Caught me while I’m sleeping! My name is Starry Eyed Stella and I am 3yrs old. I love attention but can also entertain myself for hours playing. I would love to be your only feline and sleep in your bed each night. I will wake you with gentle head butts. I am a very calm and happy girl.

Hinton & District SPCA

Hello everyone! I am a Rotti/Shepherd/Heeler X named Baxter. I need an active home where I get regular exercise because I have a lot of energy. If you think you can keep up please come check me out today... I’m ready when you are!!!

Hello, my name is Bruno and I am a 3yr old Min Pin. I’m a little guy but I have super high energy and would love an active home with lots of walks. I love to play and know a few tricks I can show off... want to come see my shenanigans?

They call me Lucas and tell me I am a very handsome 1yr old Husky. I love to go for runs –with or without you- so I need a securely fenced yard in my new home. I can’t wait for my new family to discover me and bring me home forever!

All the nice people around here call me Colby. I am a 1yr old handsome Shepherd X who is known as the gentle giant in these parts. I love to spend time outside and hope to find a permanent home with special people very soon.

Hello there! I was rescued with my litter of 9 puppies. They named me Lily and they tell me I am a beautiful Shepherd X. I am weaning my puppies but will be ready soon for my very own home where I can finally be babied myself!

Our names are Layla & Leo. We are Lily’s babies and there are nine of us in all (7 boys & 2 girls) with similar markings. We are Shepherd/ Border Collies crosses that were born at the shelter and we will be ready for adoption August 15th. I sure hope we all have homes ready to go... Mom too, she looks after us very well and deserves a loving home.

I am a 2yr old Border Collie/ Golden Retriever X. Everyone calls me Buddy... which is great because I am the best friend a guy could have! I love going for walks and playing. Maybe you could come toss the ball around with me. I am sure we’d have lost of fun together.

Hi everyone! My name is Kona. I am a 4yr old Malamute and I am looking for a loving home. I would do best in a home with no young children and I prefer to be the only dog. I have been looking for awhile therefore, I’m so ready! Will you please be my forever and ever home?

My name is Raven and I am 2yrs old. I am a friendly & sweet Border Collie X and I get along great with other dogs. I also enjoy people of all sizes and pretty well get along with everyone. I just can’t wait to have my very own people and a house to call my very own.!

My name is Casey and Lucas is my brother. I am about 1yr old and they consider me a real artist... an escape artist. I can climb fences. So, I need a family who will keep me safe and who can provide a roofed kennel for when I’m left outside.

Howdy! My name is Walker and I am a Shepherd X. I am about 1yr old and I love to play. I also know a few tricks and I can’t wait to learn more in my new home. I love spending time with people and I’m always up for an adventure. Given the chance, I will follow you anywhere.

Infinite Woofs Animal Rescue (iWAR)

My name is Janie and I am about 8-9mths old. Everyone is confused as to why a girl who is so pretty and young, has yet to be adopted! I was being housed at Parkland Pound but after a month I still hadn’t found a home so iWARS took me in and now I am in a loving foster home.

Hello! My name is Gericho and I am one cool cat! I was being held at another facility but they had no room for me and I was going to be euthanized. Luckily iWARS stepped in and discovered just how awesome I really am! I am very laid back and great around other animals. Please give me a chance.

I’m Pongo. Sadly, 25 of us were dropped in a farmer’s field in the dead of winter. They worked hard to catch us all but only 12 of us survived. My ear tips are missing from frost bite, but I also had infected bite wounds all over my back end. Now, thanks to loving care I am ready to be adopted!

I am Lightening. I am a sweet Lab/Husky X from the Northwest Territories SPCA. I may have some Husky in me but I am all Lab in attitude! I love to play, play, play... with anyone! When people come by to visit they are always surprised to see me because I don’t bark at the door.

My name is Harry and I’m an adorable little Gerbil. My previous owner used me and my siblings to lure dogs through tunnels and tubes in agility training... needless to say we are all incredibly happy to be living the good life now! I am the last one left, I just need to find a forever family who will love and care for me!

Northern Spirit k9 Rescue Hello PRM Readers! My name is Echo and I am a Shepherd X around 9mths old. I am good with cats & other dogs, already crate & house trained, and I have nice manners. I am a faithful, and eager to please, boy who will make a wonderful companion for a very lucky home.

My name is Teka and I am about 11wks old. I am a super cute Husky X and I currently weigh about 20lbs. I get along well with others but my manners still need a little work before I can hang with young children. I am a quick learner but I will need some help to grow up into the best dog I can be!

Zoe’s Animal Rescue Society I’m a 5mth old Shepherd/Collie/ Husky/Rottweiler X named Quinn. My foster family says I’m super sweet, curious, & very adventurous. My name is Sully! I am a gorgeous 2yr old Akita X. I am an adorable 60lb boy who is good with other dogs, loves car rides and adores people of all sizes. Everyone loves me and I learn very quickly. local stories...local people...local pets

I am Ebony and I’m 2yrs old. I’m still getting used to all this good attention from people but I can be skittish, though I do love being scratched under the chin! I don’t like dogs, but I will tolerate them if they are polite. I would do best in a home with no cats or children.

My name is Phantom. I’m a happy & playful, 75lb, 3yr old Lab/Rottweiler X. I love people and I get along well with children. I have impeccable manners. I tend to be a bit pickier when it comes to other dogs. I prefer females (what guy doesn’t)! But calm male is fine too.

Hello everybody! My name is Savannah and I am about 10wks old. Aren’t I just the cutest Shepherd/ Husky X puppy you’ve ever seen? Not only am I adorable, but I’m also full of personality, cuddles, and puppy kisses. I will be ready for adoption soon so please apply if you think I’m a good fit for your home.

I am a 2yr old Akita/Husky X named Zeus. I am a cool, calm, and collected gentle giant who enjoys walks. I don’t even get mad at the other dogs who like stealing my toys! I also love cuddling and I’m often called a couch potato. I love people and I am very bright. I am house trained and love car rides.

Vets n RESCUE Clareview Casselman Pet Clinic

Our mission is to provide excellent treatment, health management and illness prevention to ensure a good quality of life to your pets through Professional, Affordable, Compassionate, and Ethical (PACE) Veterinary Care.

Laura McGee

C

lareview Casselman Pet Clinic is a community minded vet clinic with a warm and welcoming environment that not only serves to provide the best medical and nursing care possible to animals but also to be a central hub of pet education and advice for owners. With friendly, knowledgeable staff; and water, tea and coffee always on hand it’s not uncommon to find neighbors stopping in with their pets for a visit and a chat. Their pets are treated like family and given love and treats. New puppy owners often come by to socialize their puppy in this friendly, positive environment, and people come in to weigh their pets and get diet advice as part of the clinic’s Pet Slimdown Weight Loss program. The clinic holds monthly education focusing on everything from Parasite Prevention to Dental Health, and it keeps in contact with the community through its neighborhood pet newsletter. Behind the scenes of the welcoming reception room is a multi-service animal hospital equipped with a fully stocked pharmacy, an in-house laboratory, a surgery suite 24

with heated recovery kennels, a full dental setup, and an x-ray room. The laboratory and x-ray make it possible to do many tests at the clinic on the same day, so there is no wait time in finding out what is making a patient ill. While the veterinary medicine and diagnostics offered by CCpet Clinic is state-of-the art, what good is high tech medicine if it’s not affordable? Any new technology should be affordable and accessible, otherwise it does not help and its development becomes stagnant. CCpet Clinic offers a payment plan for unplanned expenses such as emergencies. They also strive to make routine procedures, such as spays, neuters and vaccinations, affordable without compromising on quality, because it benefits the community as a whole. local stories...local people...local pets

The clinic is led by Dr. Koshy, a vet with more than 20 years of experience in not only routine patient care, but also several specialized procedures. It’s not hard to see that Dr. Koshy genuinely cares about animals, and he follows up on all of his patients throughout their recovery back to health. He is very dedicated to his work; spending over 50 hours a week at his clinic and he recently opened up a new vet clinic in Beaumont; Montrose Pet Clinic. Clareview Casselman Pet Clinic prides itself on its commitment to promoting the human animal bond and on its partnerships with rescue groups that save homeless animals. They do presentations at the local daycare on Being Kind to Animals and hold fundraisers and adoption events for their rescue group partners. They also volunteer at neighborhood pet parties such as Missing Mutts Awareness Day and have a volunteer program for junior and senior high students eager to learn about a career in vet medicine. The clinic is open late on weeknights and on Saturdays and they do accept emergencies during their extended hours of operation.

keeping their animals healthy is very gratifying. In Canada pets are treated even more like family. It’s very moving to see the relationship and love shared between pets and their owners and I want to keep that relationship alive for as long as possible. What are your main interests?

How long have you practiced veterinary medicine? I graduated from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sceince in Kerala, India 21 years ago. I moved to Canada in 2004 and have been in small animal practice in Edmonton since. Why did you become a vet? I love animals, and I love helping people through healing their pets. In India especially the family dairy cow or the sheep dog is incredibly valuable to the family. And saving their livelihood by local stories...local people...local pets

I’m very interested in small animal medicine. I like challenge and fulfilment of solving a difficult medical case. I’m also taking continuing education in homeopathic medicine. There are many homeopathic treatments that were commonly done in India and were very effective and I want to educate myself on these treatments.

my Canadian certification. In India I worked for the Kerala provincial government. Is there anybody you would like to acknowledge? I would like to say a big thanks to Dr. Tammy Wylie and her husband Scott (Tudor Glen) and Dr. Duane Landals and wife Lucille, RAHT (Morinville) and also to Dr. Nancy Bruyere and Dr. Sherif Boctor for mentoring me when I first came to Canada and helping me become established as a vet here in Canada.

What did you do before opening your clinic? I worked at Morinville Veterinary Clinic for 3 ½ years after receiving my Canadian certificate. I also worked for a few years at Tudor Glen Veterinary Hospital while I was going through pet rescue magazine

Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Laverne here and I came with my sister Shirley. We’re like matching bookends with regular sized bodies on short little legs. We are excellent with kids, dogs & cats! If by chance, you are looking for 2 great dogs we can even be adopted together!

If you are looking for a handsome boy then look no further. My name is Liam and while I do like other dogs I prefer them on the calmer side. Cats and small children are not my thing. I love going for walks and really enjoy my treats!

My name is Roscoe and I was rescued at about 4mths old without ever having interaction with people. I am very bright and I’m getting braver by the day. I’m even starting to play with my toys. My tail is no longer tucked and is out wagging now!

I’m a beautiful 1yr old girl named Noel. I am extremely shy and I may hide for a few days in my new home but once I know I’m safe I will be your closest friend. I don’t mind another cat or dog in the house as long as they don’t chase after me.

My name is Willow and I was recently returned to SNAP because I loved my person too much... yes... really! I am a quiet loving girl who just wants to put down some permanent roots and I’m looking forward to life with my forever family.

Welcome to

Canada Bos Inge Nielsen

A

s the song goes, it’s a long way to Tipperary, but in this case it’s a long way to Sarajevo, Bosnia where this story begins.

Miki, now known as Bos was discovered wandering the streets of Sarajevo blind, half deaf and was described as “very dirty, stinky and badly matted” by his rescuer. Unable to turn away to the plight of this little dog, that sported an ear tag to signify he was a homeless street dog and had received a rabies vaccination, she decided to set the wheels in motion for Bos’ big trip and a new life in North America. 28

pet rescue magazine

August/September 2013

It took one and half months of boarding and quarantine before his journey could begin and during that time he received his vaccinations, was neutered. It provided Bos with the time to become healthier and gain some weight. For his rescuer, paying Bos’ bills was one thing, but actually housing him and providing a forever home in Canada was another. His rescuer didn’t really have a plan for Bos and as time grew closer panic set in. July 2nd, the day before Bos was due to arrive at Vancouver’s airport, she placed an ad on Used BC, a site local stories...local people...local pets

similar to Kijiji, and here is where the mighty rescue network kicked in. Dianne McKerrell, an employee of Used BC, flagged the ad that contained the desperate plea for help and sent it to her sister, Trish in Calgary an Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) foster. ARTS after hearing all that the dog had gone through decided Bos should take to the skies once more and be transported to Calgary and into their care. Bos oblivious to his itinerary left for Vancouver from Sarajevo July 3rd and by July 4th Linda at ARTS Air jumped into action - by the morning of July 5 Patt an ARTS Air volunteer was ready to fly Bos yet another 677 air kilometers to Calgary. No sooner had Bos landed he was whisked away for his complimentary veterinary exam at Southpointe

Pet Hospital where they removed his ear tag the first real sign that Bos was on his way to becoming a welcomed member of our companion canine community. The day was not done and off Bos went to meet Hailey Seidel of Bowdog a company specializing in boarding, walking and grooming of dogs in the Calgary area for his free complimentary makeover. Bos is now settling into life as a loved companion pet foster, despite his trauma induced blindness he has learned to negotiate stairs and according to his foster mom knows exactly the location of the fridge! prm For information on adoption please contact: Animal Rescue Transfer System www.animalrescuetransfersystem.org

Darlyn evidence you’re only as young as you feel!

Darlyn was first featured in our April/May edition. “DarLyn found herself in the animal care system in her senior years. Why? Well that question may remain a mystery. Her personality though demonstates a dog that has been loved through her years which makes her situation even more puzzling.” The above paragraph outlining Daralyn’s situation still remains a mystery, but there’s a new life for local stories...local people...local pets

her now. When Darlyn first arrived at Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) she also had concerning medical issues and was forever staring at her foster mom’s gate like she was waiting for someone. Well that someone never came, but today ARTS says she is a new dog. Through good nutrition and lots of love Darlyn has exceeded their expectations and is now ready for adoption. She no longer sits and stares at the gate waiting for her past. There’s a whole new world waiting for Darlyn and it appears she’s now good and ready for it. prm pet rescue magazine
