I am so beautiful that they had to call me Amarillo (Amy). I was very shy but I’m really starting to realize how nice everyone is. They think I am a 1yr old Shepherd/Kelti X. What they know for sure is that I’m beautiful, sweet and a very good girl.

upporters of Alberta Animal Rescues (SOAAR) is a non-profit organization that is made up of a small group of volunteers who are committed to helping Alberta rescue organizations with funding, material and volunteer aid. We understand the challenges that rescues face daily with mounting vet bills and the need for constant fundraising and it is our hope to help alleviate some of this stress while offering as much support as we can to all Alberta animal rescues. SOAAR was started in August 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to make a difference in the lives of animals within Alberta. With so many rescues already in Alberta, we decided to not start our own rescue, but to create SOAAR to support rescues that already exist. We understand the needs of rescues, how hard it can be to find volunteers, do fundraising and pay vet bills all the while trying to rescue animals. The goal of SOAAR is to take some of the stress out of rescue logistics so that rescues can focus on rescuing instead of worrying about how to pay their next vet bill.

I came into care with my sister Zsa Zsa, my name is Ziggy. We were classed as little rebels and that’s not good when you’re sitting in the pound! I used to hiss like a snake but now I can’t get enough of being around people, how things change. We are about 14wks now and are ready to go home!
I’m a little girl that’s full o’beanz! Hi, I am Zsa Zsa. I came from our Animal Care & Control Centre as a hissy kitten...me hissy... naw...not no more. From Anchor to Cancer to Hope
Kai’s Courage
By: Inge Nielsen There are many jobs that we entrust to our canine friends; watching over our property, helping the disabled, herding our domestic animals, catching criminals and visiting with the sick in hospitals. We honour them for the roles they play in our lives and take care of them in return. And then there is the story of Kai. He too was given a job in life but it did not come with any gratitude or reward. Kai was simply an anchor that kept the two hounds that were tethered to him from running off when outside. He did not have value for who he was and did his job until the day he was seized from his owner and found himself at a shelter.
who loved him and had everything to look forward to. The reality of cancer was devastating and terrifying. Russ and Karen were determined that cancer would not define who Kai is nor would cancer be allowed to claim his life without a fight. ARTS agreed completely. Dr. Eva Braze at Sifton Park Vet Clinic undertook Kai’s medical care. It was decided that a series of test including ultrasound would be done to determine how far the cancer had spread. That would allow an informed decision to be made about what would be in the best interest of Kai.
Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) was contacted to see if we could find a place for this sweet eight year old Shepherd X. How could we say no!? ARTS Air Angel Russ Anderson flew down to southern Alberta to pick him up and bring him back to Edmonton. As it would turn out, Russ and his wife Karen decided they would adopt Kai.
The tests came back and hope has been restored! The cancer was confined to only his anal glands. It had not spread and surgery was now a viable option. There was much joy in Mudville with the news and fundraising began in earnest to pay for the diagnostics and surgery. Kai will have his chance at a good life.
Kai went from enduring life as a living tether to being loved and cherished in a family. The joy he felt at his new found freedom was clear from the excitement on his whitened face. Rescue may have come late in his life but it didn’t matter to ARTS or to the Andersons. Kai was a gentle soul giving so much love back.
There are times when our canine friends teach us humility by the courage and strength theyshow. Kai did his thankless job of anchor without losing his spirit. He remained a loving dog through it all. He taught all of us at ARTS just how resilient our animal companions are and there is always a reason to cherish hope.
The world came crashing down when Kai was diagnosed with cancer not even a month after he came to ARTS. How could this be fair?! Kai finally had his very own family

A Lost Dog and Lessons Learned By Travis Grant
S
o you’ve just lost your pet. You were stunned at first, but now you’re acutely aware of what has happened and you accept that the situation is real. Panic swells in your gut then recedes with all of its force into a knot of acute anxiety. You begin to analyze the math. There are all the places your pet could be, divided by your limitations as one person, which equals a depressingly overwhelming sum. A feeling of hopelessness takes hold. As days pass, you’re hindered by an emotional malaise that will persist until you have some kind of resolution. This is the gist of what a person feels when he or she loses a pet. It happened to me, two months ago, on an unexceptional Thursday evening at home. “Can you let the dogs out, Honey? They’re crying at the door.” My wife Jesica was curled up on the couch, half watching TV, half playing on her iPad. “Sure, no trouble.” I had already heard their nails clicking at the glass and their impatient, throaty little cries. It was an early Thursday evening in late September. The sky was already getting dark and fading to black the further upward you looked. It was cold, too – a chilly -1 °C. I turned on the porch light and sat down beside Jesica, listening for the dogs once they finished. When I opened the door for the three of them, only two came in the house. I put on my shoes and a heavy sweater, grabbed a flashlight, and stepped outside to search the back yard for the missing dog – a small black Chihuahua we were fostering from the Edmonton Humane Society. My children had affectionately named her Chainsaw. Now you’ve got to understand, Chainsaw is not the sort of dog to run away from home. When she was brought to the EHS, she was nervous and defensive, and she would bite 20

any hand that drew too near her fearful little mouth. After being plied with hot dogs and gentle words, Chainsaw was calm enough to be handled, and the first order of business was to place her in an office with an EHS staff member, so that she could be socialized and gain some confidence. By a stroke of fortune, my office was chosen. Chainsaw was still frightened, but I keptcomforting and reassuring her, giving her treats to win her over and gain her trust. Within the hour, I was Chainsaw’s best friend in the world, and she hasn’t left my side since. Wherever I walk, she walks too; and when I stop, she rests on her haunches and looks up at me, waiting for the next cue. At night time, she stretches out on my chest, her head resting to one side, her paws folded over one another. So when she failed to return after being let out on a cold fall evening, I assumed the worst. I live close to Lois Hole Provincial Park, which is filled with wildlife. Did a patrolling owl swoop down silently out of the darkness and carry her away in its talons? Was the gate left open for an errant coyote to wander into the yard and clutch Chainsaw in its jaws, before she even had a chance to cry out? These were the sorts of dark thoughts running through my mind. When I flashed my light on the gate, I realised what must’ve happened. The board that normally stands securely against the metal bars of the gate, through which I could now see, had been moved. There across the road, under a luminous cone of orange street light, sat two jack rabbits – the perfect critters for an excitable little dog to chase about the neighbourhood. Sometimes when I’m driving home at night, I see groups of ten rabbits bounding from lawn to lawn. But I had never taken Chainsaw out at night, so she had local stories...local people...local pets
never laid eyes on one…until now, it seemed. This would explain why the little dog who never left my side was suddenly gone. And then things got worse. When I went inside to tell my wife, I noticed Chainsaw’s collar on the kitchen counter, next to the sink where Jesica had bathed her that afternoon. Not only was our small black foster dog missing on a chilly fall night, she didn’t have any identification on her. This was serious. Jesica went straight to the internet, to post about our lost dog on social media, while I headed back outside, to walk the streets and call for Chainsaw. At 1:00 am, she was still nowhere to be seen. A twisting sense of hopelessness took hold. At a loss, I turned for home. The next morning, I went to the sliding glass door, to see if Chainsaw was waiting to be let in after a cold night alone. She wasn’t there. I walked out into the back yard, to see if she was hiding under the deck. The yard was deserted. It was real. Chainsaw was gone. How could this have happened? Wasn’t I a responsible pet owner? My dogs are in good health and up to date on their vaccinations. They’re all microchipped and have collars with identification. My wife and I are usually careful to check the gate, making sure the dogs can’t slip past. Yet there we were, feeling terrible for having taken off Chainsaw’s collar and forgetting, just once, to make sure she couldn’t get out of the yard. Accepting that she had run away, we took the usual steps for finding a lost dog. We made flyers to post around town; we networked with friends and community groups online; we contacted the RCMP and the Morinville Veterinary Clinic, which is standard procedure for St. Albert residents who’ve lost pets; and I notified my colleagues in the EHS’ admitting department, in the event that Chainsaw was brought in as a stray. We felt confident that the net had been widely cast. But it didn’t make the waiting or the separation any easier. Even though we had taken the appropriate steps, we were impatient for Chainsaw’s safe return. On Saturday morning, the Edmonton Humane Society’s CEO, Stephanie McDonald, called to let me know that Chainsaw had been found on a walking trail at 5:00 AM and was now being held in Morinville. Chainsaw had no discernible identification on her, but she had been microchipped when she was in the EHS’ care. And since Chainsaw was still a foster dog, the EHS was still listed as her owner, meaning she wouldn’t be released into my care if I tried to go get her. Stephanie generously offered to drive to Morinville, on her day off, to get Chainsaw and bring her back to my family. I believe I still owe her for that one. So what have I learned from this harrowing experience? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. My first thought was that I should have known better. professional who works in the world of animal sheltering, I’m constantly writing about and answering people’s questions regarding responsible pet ownership. And I’m always finding news stories from around North America and beyond about irresponsible pet ownership. A significant part of my professional life involves understanding the differences between the two and advising accordingly. If anyone should know better, it’s me. But if that’s true, then how did it come to pass that I lost my dog? I think the answer is nuance. We can do all the right things, take all the right precautions, and feel satisfied and responsible knowing that we’ve done so. But all it takes is one instance where you forget to check the gate or put your dog’s collar back on after a bath, and you wind up in a predicament you knew perfectly well how to avoid. These are the little things that often lead to big lessons. And they remind us that being a good pet owner relies not only on the practical knowledge we’ve acquired from other sources, but also on our own personal experiences, from which we hopefully learn a great deal. I’ve witnessed the opposing side of the coin and so the mantra of responsible pet ownership is far more than words to me now – it’s a lived experience with a hard lesson learned. Having your pets tattooed and microchipped; ensuring they’re wearing ID collars with contact info; and making sure the information associated with each is current and up to date: these are details we must vigilantly have in order while our pets are safe and sound in our care. Because it’s that one time, that one instant where a door is left open, a fence board is knocked loose, or some other unpredicted variable presents itself and our beloved pets are gone to who knows where for who knows how long. I, for one, am definitely more vigilant in the wake of Chainsaw’s disappearance and fortunate return. Does what happened make me a bad pet owner? No. It simply illustrates that responsible pet ownership is a continuing education, by which we learn from our mistakes (we all make them, by the way) and strive constantly to do a little better. For me, that meant going to Home Depot, buying wood, hinges, and a latch, to make a permanent and impenetrable second gate. I sincerely hope that Chainsaw doesn’t have any other lessons to teach me about keeping her safe in the yard. But if she does, I’ll take them to heart and strive a little harder to be the best darn pet owner I can be. This story has a happy ending. But it has an even better epilogue. Two days after Chainsaw came home, Jesica and I adopted her. After all she had gone through, committing to her for the rest of her life was the least that we could do. Tails From Home
But one day my dad brought home a hunting collar. Man this was the best invention ever! He trained me to come home just by making my collar beep! From there I learned to come to my name too. Now I get sooo hyper as soon as I see someone pull out my collar. Since this collar I have never even had to be on a leash to go for a walk. If I get too far from my parents’ side they just call my name. If I don’t listen they just beep me back. We’ve even got our town to allow my collar as a permitted leash. The park behind my house has also been a great playground for me. I am so fast that when playing fetch with other dogs in the neighborhood I have proven to be the champion fetcher in town. I am so good at catching the ball in the air after a single bounce. All the neighborhood children come running toward me, chanting my name, begging to play fetch with me. I am so cute that my dad even thinks I should be in the movies. How far we have all come. Our family has even adopted a canine brother for me named Sparky. Sparky is a bit older and smaller than me and even though I try to act like I’m boss, big bro really does have dominance over me. But we really love each other.

i there! My name is Friday and I am an alumni of a SCARS foster home. In December of 2011 I was adopted by my dad, my mom, and my three brothers. After almost two years with my new family I finally have them trained. I am an extremely active dog and when I first came to my new home my parents and I didn’t exactly see eye to eye... For starters I also had three sisters, all of which were of the feline species, and I couldn’t understand why my dad slept with my leash attached to his ankle. All I wanted to do was play tag with my sisters? Then, as grateful as I was for having a HUGE back yard, when other dogs and kids played in the park behind my house I just wanted to go play with them. What’s the big deal if I jump a 5 foot fence? In retrospect I am sorry for all the times my parents were late for work because I wouldn’t come back to my name. But I was young and just wanted to play dodgeball with their attempts to catch me. 24

My feline sisters and I are much closer. Two of them tolerate me and they even sleep close to me once they know I’m relaxing for the evening. My third feline sister is very close to Sparky and I. She likes to flirt with us and rub faces with us. But when we least expect it she sneaks in and bites our cheeks!! Our family has even bought 70 acres of land to spend our weekends at and Sparky and I chase squirrels all day! Our collars work for a mile so when it’s time to come back to camp for supper mom and dad just beep us. Life couldn’t be better. When we are at home during the week we have a huge king bed that Dad, Mom, Sparky, my three sisters, and I all fit on very comfortably every night. Sometimes dad and mom are on the edges but they don’t seem to mind . I like to cuddle under the blanket and share my dad or mom’s pillow. Thank you SCARS for finding me such a great home and family that loves me more than anything! I love them too! prm

Our little “Christmas”Story T’was three weeks before Christmas, and down in a pipe a little kitten screamed for someone to help. Out he was pulled all dirty and wet, his trip to the pound...we guess...was quite the event.

“This kitten needs surgery!” is what we were told, so we took him in promptly as part of our fold. He needed a name and so much more, so we called him “Christmas” it suited him so. Our supporters got busy, raised funds for his meds, as visions of “Christmas” danced through their heads.
Saving Christmas
It’s one year later and “Christmas” is strong, thanks to the McFadyen Family who gave him his home. So to all of those who joined in the fight, you did save “Christmas” and this little one’s plight. With open hearts and open homes...help save the souls who survive all alone. May this season be filled with love and light. Happy Holidays to all...and to all a goodnight!

No more roaming for

hen I was called Gypsy I didn’t think that my name would reflect my life. I’m not telling anything about my life before I ended up at the pound, but what I can tell you is I wandered a lot. I’ve learned now that staying at home is the best policy and that the big outdoors is not for me.
I came into SAFE Team and progressed leaps and bounds in my socialization skills. Yes, I am pretty and being so I was adopted into a great home, but there was small children that I had to deal with. What I found was I couldn’t cope but had the advantage of a safe place in the basement where I could chill out and relax. Everything was well until the day my family moved. Our new house did not have a basement and not only did my whole world tun upside down my safe place was also gone. It was then that I started to pull the hair from my tail in an effort to relieve my stress. It got to the point that I also started to chew on it too. My family did not know what to do so they contacted SAFE Team who said it would be better if I came back into care. I am again a foster with SAFE Team after having to have an inch or so of my tail amputated to stop any infection arising from my stress induced behaviour. When I first arrived at my foster, I was shy and terribly “out of sorts” I didn’t want to 26

eat and the kennel that had been provided to me as my safe place was definitely that, as I didn’t come out of it for a week when anyone was around. Today, with time and patience, I am a new cat. I no longer chew on my tail and it has healed nicely. I’m just waiting for my hair to grow back in. I absolutely love being paid attention to so much so I will rub up against you especially for chin rubs and ear scratches. I have also found my inner voice…a tiny meow but I don’t talk too much. One of my cutest traits when I’m happy is to lift my front feet in a slowmotion kneading action. I will even perform when I eat. My foster mom tells me all the time that I am a very nice girl with a super disposition. I would never dream of scratching or causing a fuss. I still sleep in my little carrier instead of out in the open but on a much more comfy bed and hopefully with time I will feel secure enough to laze around in the house. My wish this holiday season is to go to my forever home where there is love, patience and understanding for a girl like me that has had many experiences in my life. I’m sorry I can’t handle children but it is too much stress for me, but other four-legged friends are a blessing. Please think about me – Gyspy. econd Chance Animal Rescue Society held their annual Canines & Cocktails themed dinner & auction on November 1, 2013 at the beautiful Palace Conference and Banquet Facility. This year’s theme was A Night at the oSCARS and close to $80,000 was raised! Guests enjoyed an amazing dinner, hundreds of fantastic silent auction items, dressing up for pictures and bidding in the exciting live auction. The annual video presentation, by Virginia Marando, showing scars activities and progress brought both smiles and tears, and this year’s dog parade featured a red carpet walk with oSCARS awards for the dogs!
