Did you know you can feed a premium grain fee diet from as little as Dhs.4.6 a day and some of the more reputable brands for Dhs.6.4/day? That’s a lot less than your daily coffee! To make life easier, we have highlighted the main features of the some of the most popular brands out there. Is it really necessary to groom a cat that self grooms? Learn more on page 17. If you have not tried our grooming services at Motor City, do go down and try them out with a 25% discount voucher to our readers (Pls. see back voucher page). Can you recognize any of our happy customers on p. 18? Having your dog sleep in bed with you might seem a natural thing to do, but do you really know the pros and cons of doing this? ‘Butter’s Story’ is a heart warming story from Ana Marie a Pet’s Delight customer. If you have any stories you would like to share please do send them to info@petsdelight.com.

Pets are far more than just a furry friend, they’re part of the family. Research also shows that they have a number of health benefits for humans, one of which is that they make you more active. However, there are quite a lot of places in Dubai where you can’t walk your pup. And although new indoor spaces are being opened up, sometimes you just want to go for a walk without always having to pay an entrance fee to take your dog with you. So, we wanted to share some of our favourite places for dog walking, to give you (potentially) some new options. If you have some other favourite spots then let us know on info@petsdelight.com

OUR UNSUNG
Sadly, the stray challenge in the UAE is only worsening. With the hot summer soon to come to an end, the number of stray pets in the UAE has risen yet again. More and more during the summer people leave the UAE to return to their home countries, and not knowing what to do with their pets, they end up on the streets, out in the desert or with local animal groups. There is some way to go before we can say that the situation is under control. For now, the UAE is relying on the goodwill of a number of incredible people to try and save the animals that they can – these are the UAE’s unsung heroes. And in our new campaign, we are telling their stories. We know there are lots more people doing good in the UAE. If you know an unsung hero and would like them to be featured in our campaign, please contact our Marketing Manager, Emma, on emma@petsdelight.com.

Storm
STORM IS WELL KNOWN IN THE ANIMAL COMMUNITY FOR FEEDING HUNDREDS OF CATS EVERY WEEK. We went with Storm for one of his evening feeds in Al Jaddaf, to learn more about what he does. "My real name is Fawaz but everyone knows me as Storm. "I have been feeding cats since 2001. I started in Deira, then Bur Dubai, Jumeriah, Al Wasl Road, all the way to Al Jaddaf. I feed daily, moving around these different areas. I come here to Al Jaddaf three times a week. "My biggest challenge is trapping all of the injured cats. I need to at least spay the females - to have less dead and sick kittens on the streets. So far I've helped to spay 160 females from Al Jaddaf alone, I trap them, transport them to the clinic, and that's only from this area and here there are about 300 cats.

"Luckily I get charity rates at two of the local vets, which are good prices. But I still have a big debt to pay with them. Sometimes I buy the food myself, and I ask friends and pet lovers to contribute, but I feed probably around 600 cats in total - the price really adds up."
HOW CAN YOU HELP STORM? "I really just need people to support the cats in any way that they can. It's very difficult to take care of the number of cats I look after already, nevermind the hundreds more that unfortunately I can't help right now." "I use at least 15kg of food every time I go out to feed the cats."
"Although I am constantly spaying cats, kittens keep being born and I need to take care of them, too."

THE K9 FRIENDS
KENNEL TEAM Most of our customers know about K9 Friends as we have supported them for over 5 years. But not many people know about the amazing Kennel team who have been looking after the dogs for a long time. We went to visit them to find out more about the challenges they face.
Indika
Achini
Ajith
Indika: (19 years with K9 Friends) "It is difficult because we are always full. People always bring dogs here. And for example, Elsa has been here four years because nobody wants her, but she's a perfect dog. Sometimes it's hard because we know the dogs are amazing, but often people only want to adopt new puppies. This means we have some dogs here for a long long time." Ajith: (15 years with K9 Friends) "I love the dogs, they are very cute. But it is sometimes difficult because when new dogs come here they are sick, so we have to spend time making them better." Achini: ( 9 1/2 years with K9 Friends) "When we were feeding the old food we used to have diarrhea problems and teeth problems, and generally lots of health issues, so we had to pay lots of money for the vet bills and that was on top of the food. Now Pet's Delight donates Acana food, there are less teeth problems and skin troubles or diarrhea. The boys are very happy in the mornings because there's less mess in the kennels!"

Helen: "At K9 Friends it's really upsetting when you see families abandoning their dogs. They might have pets for eight years and then they don't want them anymore or they don't want to relocate with them, so they drop their dogs off here. It's a shock for the dogs, so we settle them in, however, because they're older it's much harder for them to find a home. But we hope one day they will all find homes." Elsa

Good health starts with great nutrition – a line that we believe in just as much as the Vitalin brand does. Super premium dog food has always had a hefty price tag attached, which is normally what you need to pay for high meat inclusions and the nutritious grain and wheat substitutions. But Vitalin is different.

Grain free has taken the market by storm and we at Pet’s Delight have certainly embraced this new feeding philosophy. There is open debate as to whether grain free is actually healthier for your pet, but for us it is more to do with the fact that grain free diets tend to deliver nutrition that is higher in ingredient quality, more natural, and ethically sourced. When reading packaging, watch out for wheat, rice, oats, and even corn. It’s true that these more complex carbohydrates could: • Help give dogs extra energy • Have increased fiber that help keeps dogs more regular • Contain ‘filler ingredients’ that can help keep dogs fuller after a meal.
However, we believe grain free foods have greater benefits for your pet because: • The biggest pro to grain free dog food is the high protein content. Grain free foods usually contain more meat which is very high in protein and necessary for the health of your pup. In particular, a high meat-based protein diet is ideal for active dogs because it helps give them sustained energy. • Many grain-free dog foods use higher-quality, simple ingredients in general, such as real human-grade chicken, beef, whitefish, salmon, turkey, tuna, and eggs. These whole protein sources are better than byproducts found in many non-grain free diets. • Premium grain free dog foods tend to contain no fillers like corn meal or wheat gluten. These fillers provide no nutritional value, and are simply a cheaper way for manufacturers to bulk out food. • Where dogs and cats have limited access to exercise (which is common in the summer months in the UAE), grain free diets are great to help maintain a healthy weight. They contain fewer simple carbohydrates that can cause an unhealthy spike in blood sugar, which can lead to a multitude of challenges particularly in behaviour.
• There is a danger that grains found in modern pet food is genetically-modified corn or wheat—and we don’t fully understand the effects of GMO ingredients. Until more studies are conducted many have chosen to omit them completely. • The canine digestive system is still pretty primitive. Dogs have little natural digestive support for breaking down and metabolizing complex carbohydrates and cereal grains. These difficult-to-digest fibers and grains remain undigested, with the body relying mainly on fermentation to break them down. Over a long period of time, it has been found that this can damage the lining of the digestive system, resulting in bowel inflammation disorders, food sensitivities, food allergies, leaky gut, and obesity. As with anything, there is grain free and then there’s premium grain free.
Good-quality foods for your pets: • Should have protein as the first ingredient. • Shouldn’t be packed with additives and unnecessary fillers—including low-quality meat byproducts or too much potato, both of which can appear in otherwise grain free foods. • Ingredients should be natural, simple and understandable. Look out for words such as: Whole, dried dehydrated… • Sweet potato, pea protein, and garbanzo beans are among the healthiest carbohydrates for your pets. At Pet’s Delight the natural and ethical ethos is just as important, and we know that our hand-picked, grain free brands deliver this for our customers. From the biologically appropriate to the PETA approved ethical – it is vital we buy in to the more sustainable.
At Pet’s Delight we sell premium pet food and all of our staff are well trained to advise you on the right choice for your dog depending on his age, breed, size, and health challenges. So rest assured if you call, email, or go into one of our seven shops, someone will be there to guide you. Below are just some of our favourite dry foods, with the specific reasons why we like them. We’ve ranked them in price order, so you can find the right food in your price range.
Ziwipeak – AED 14.4 cost per day – Straight from the fields in New Zealand, Ziwipeak has a mission to handcraft the best nutrition for your pet to live a long and healthy life. With the biggest meat inclusions of any other pet food of over 96% fresh meat, organs, bone, and seafood, and with no grain you can’t get much better for your dog. The recipes have a high level of slow release metabolized energy, which means you can feed less and your dog will feel fuller and content for longer. ORIJEN – AED 6.4 cost per day – Straight from the kitchens in Canada, ORIJEN is a grain free favourite of ours. It’s inspired by nature’s intended diet for dogs and has one of the highest fresh meat inclusions of any dry dog food. Following the Biologically Appropriate philosophy, this food is protein-rich (75-80% meat inclusions), carb-limited, and grainfree. Meaning it’s a good choice for the majority of dogs. ACANA – AED 5.7 cost per day – Owned by the same company as ORIJEN, Champion, Acana follows the same principles but with slightly less meat inclusions of 40-65%, but still with no grains. ACANA foods, like ORIJEN, mimic the natural eating habits of your dog with high-protein and low-carbs. However, the lesser meat inclusions is reflected in the more affordable price. Applaws – AED 5.7 cost per day – UK-made brand, Applaws, focusses on creating pet food that is 100% natural. Following the grain-free philosophy its dry food is Complete and a palatable option for your pup. Pooch and Mutt – AED 5.1 cost per day – Our newest brand in this list, Pooch and Mutt is a popular UK-made, natural, PETA-approved, ethical, grain free pet food. Similar to some veterinary diets, Pooch and Mutt has tailored its foods, treats, and supplements for your dog’s specific needs. With foods such as Calm & Relaxed, Fresh Breath, Healthy Digestion, Move Easy, and Slim & Slender, you should be able to find the best match depending on your dogs needs and temperament. This food goes on average 24% further than a leading veterinary diet*, due to its healthy ingredients, your pup will be fuller with less, for longer. Vitalin – AED 4.6 cost per day – A UK-made, super premium dog food at an affordable price, Vitalin proves that grain free and healthy doesn’t need to be expensive. This Complete dog food has been carefully formulated to be nutritionally balances yet delicious. *Results may vary.

DOES MY CAT REALLY NEED TO SEE THE GROOMER? Why would you pay for your kitty to be groomed when she basically does it herself? Well, a cat’s tongue, teeth, and saliva can only do so much…
Here are some reasons why your cat needs the occasional professional groom: Cats need regular nail trims As in, at least once a month. If this doesn’t happen they will grow too long which isn’t only going to tarnish your bedding and carpet, but it can seriously impact how your cat walks, which can eventually lead to pain and arthritis. Unsurprisingly a lot of cats really hate the nail clippers and will run a mile when you get them out, this is where a professional groomer can come in.
Brushing is more important than you think Even a short-haired cat needs brushing regularly to reduce shedding and to prevent hairballs. Long-haired cats need more brushing for obvious reasons but most importantly to stop matting in the fur.
Cats have really thin skin, so trying to get out matting can be painful for them. If matting happens, a groomer is trained to know how to fix the problem without causing too much stress to your cat. But regular grooming sessions will lessen the chances of matting.
They might hate it, but they need to be bathed Your furbaby will regularly try to clean herself with her saliva, but unfortunately, it’s not enough. Cats require bathing to be properly cleaned. Just bear in mind that bathing makes matting worse, so attend to that first.
More benefits for grooming your cat:
• The feedback we often get from our customers is that their cats are far less grumpy and more content once they have had a professional groom. • Groomers are trained to pick up on health issues during a groom, which is extra peace of mind for pet parents. • A professional groom can solve a number of other problems such as shedding, dander, dandruff, scratched furniture, allergies for owners, hairballs, matting, dirty ears, cleanliness, and more…

IT’S ABOUT TIME WE TALKED ABOUT WHETHER YOUR PUP SHOULD BE IN YOUR BED… Watching a pup sleep is one of the joys of being a pet parent. Nothing quite compares to the calmness of a snoring dog. And it is extremely common for pet owners to let their furbabies share their bed due to the cosiness and/or because the bed is their go-to sleepy spot. It might make us happy, but should we really be doing it? The downsides of sharing with your pup Aside from sharing the space with your dog, which might be a big tricky if he’s a large breed, there are a number of more serious downsides. 1. Having a pup in your bed increases the chances of them passing on fleas, worms, and other parasites. And once they’re in your bed it can be tricky to get rid of them. 2. If you ever suffer from allergies in relation to your pet, they will be aggravated if you sleep next to them. 3. If your dog is older or small, he might struggle getting in and out of your bed – so consider this before you start letting him in. 4. Your sleep can be agitated by a pup that doesn’t sleep still. 5. Your dog might think he’s in charge if you let him sleep in your bed.
The upsides of sharing with your pup On the flip side, humans have been sharing their beds with dogs for a long time – years ago it was one of the easiest ways to stay warm as you slept. So, if this is something that humans have been doing for a while, there must be some good reasons why, right? 1. Sharing a bed with your dog is a good way for you to bond. 2. If your pup is a quiet sleeper, his presence promotes calm and is a good stress reliever, which ultimately will help you sleep. 3. It can help ease separation anxiety. If you work long hours, being able to share time at night can help support your dog. 4. Maybe you just like it! Some people actually struggle to sleep without their dogs.
There are many positives and negatives to sharing a bed with your dog. As long as you’re aware of the above, you will be able to make the right decision for you and your dog. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

BUTTER’S STORY
I have two adopted dogs. Their names are Peanut and Butter, and I adopted them from a Rescue Centre. Peanut is a friendly pom who looks like a fox, and Butter is a 3-legged white pom – who’s not quite as friendly. He barks an awful lot, which means most people think he will hurt them. He won’t, he just gets scared because of what he’s been through. His previous family didn’t look after him so well. He got a wire stuck in his leg which they didn’t treat, this led to an infection that shattered his left front leg. Unfortunately, his leg had to be amputated. He spent three months in the shelter after his amputation. He became skinny, when I met him I could feel his ribs – it was like holding a guitar string. The chances of him being adopted were so slim because he only has three legs. But the shelter didn’t give up on him, they posted photos of him to put him up for adoption, that’s how I found him. He’d lost a leg and his family, and I almost lost my spirit. But I took him.
Now he always wants to be next to me. He has to be touching me for him to fall asleep, and he sleeps right through until the morning now. He’s basically my shadow. Both of my poms are so special to me. I treat them as my children and I will do everything I can to give back to them, because they give me unconditional love. They have just been longing for a family. And I’m so happy that they’re mine.
"Home isn't a sweet home without scattered fur and wagging tails. And you can never be wrong having a dog(s) in your life. 'Coz they are not just a man's bestfriend but indeed a family." -Written by Ana Marie
