What food can you recommend for a fussy eater bichon frise?

Why do dogs bark? Question from @timmy_the_persian on Instagram

Question from @gelato_gelatissimo77 on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

There are a number of reasons why a dog might appear to be a fussy eater:

Barking, whining, howling, and growling, are how a canine communicates. If your dog is making these kinds of noises, he's probably trying to tell you something. Common reasons why your dog may bark:

• • • • •

Allergies Intolerances Wrong kibble size Illness Dislike to a particular ingredient

A lot of dogs appear to be fussy eaters, and in the UAE we frequently see dogs that have food allergies or intolerances, which can also limit food options. We recommend brands with grain free and high meat protein foods. Our highest protein and meat content food comes from Ziwi Peak, after this I would recommend the brands Canagan or Orijen if Ziwi is out of your price bracket. Vitalin is also a brilliant pet food brand for smaller budgets. When choosing the flavour, start by finding out what meat agrees with your dog the most. Some dogs can have any meat, but others may be allergic to chicken (common in bulldogs) or beef, and rich proteins such as venison or lamb may be a little heavy. In which case we would recommend a fish-based food. If your dog is turning his nose up at his kibble, try adding a wet food on top, or adding a little water as it could be the consistency he's struggling with. For smaller dogs it's also a great idea to get the right kibble size, Canagan has small breed varieties which suit little mouths better as the kibbles are smaller.

• • • • •

To induce play Discipline his or her young Warning of danger To threaten intruders Curiosity

None of the above reasons cause excessive or annoying barking. If your dog seems to be barking for company or for a reward, then this is problem barking and will require some training to fix. It is best not to give in to this kind of barking, or it will gradually get worse and it can be challenging to change this behaviour.

I'm travelling with my cat soon, how long can a cat go with no food, water, or litter?

My cat vomits from time to time (every few months) what does that mean?

Question from @strayferalrescue on Instagram

Question from @noura.al.shamsi on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

The amount of food and water your cat needs is dependent on a number of factors, but it's obviously not comfortable for your kitty if food and water isn't available for a long period of time. Technically most cats can go three days without water, but we wouldn't recommend it- in fact, we tend to tell customers ways to encourage their cats to drink water as they can often turn their noses up at water bowls. When you buy a cat crate from us you get a free bowl, which is split in two giving you space for water and for food so your kitty doesn't go without. We recommend adding pads to the crate to make it more comfortable when it comes to going to the toilet.

It is concerning if your cat is vomiting daily, or even just frequently. If it can't be put down to a simple issue such as hairballs, then your vet definitely needs to investigate as it could be that your cat has eaten something toxic or has a serious illness. Even the healthiest cats may vomit every now and again and in many cases it's nothing to worry about. But if it's regularly - once a week or more, have a vet see your kitty.

Chews, Treats and Bones Ziwi Peak chews, treats, and bones are sourced from New Zealand deer, lamb, and beef, all raised on grass-fed farms.

Bones There are a number of health benefits for your dog if you give him or her a bone. They break down tartar, reduce gum disease, and clean the teeth. Chewing a bone also stimulates the production of saliva enzymes which will prevent your dog experiencing a buildup of plaque. Plus, dogs who chew on bones are less likely to scratch or lick their own paws.

Deer Shank Dog Bone A deer's shank bone is full of nutrients and marrow, and we wrap beef esophagus over the top and naturally airdry it to retain it's goodness. Dogs go crazy for them, plus they're brilliant for oral health. 06

Deer Hoofer Dog Bone Great for teeth and gums, the Deer Hoofer Dog Bone is long-lasting and full of goodness that your dog will love.

Chews Chews are naturally air-dried to retain their goodness in a shelf-stable form, they're tasty and nutritious due to being packed with protein. Suitable for all breeds and life stages, chews are a healthy way to add variety to your dogs diet and handy for use during positive reinforcement training.

Lamb Tripe Chew

Chewing this Beef Weasand provides a gentle, abrasive action which will help to maintain good dental health in your dog.

A single-sourced protein chew that's ideal for small to medium-sized dogs.

Similar to the Beef Weasand, the Lamb Trachea chew helps support dental health in your dog and is ideal for those doggies who might not enjoy beef.

Treats Reward treats are perfect for the training process with your dog, or in general to keep your pup happy. The Ziwi Peak Good Dog Rewards treats are really high in animal protein, and the recipes all include vitamins & minerals, sea kelps, chicory, and parsley, making them a healthier alternative to many other treat options.

THINKING ABOUT PUTTING YOUR PET ON A MEAT FREE DIET? PROCEED WITH CAUTION

t is predicted that by 2040 only 40% of the global population will be consuming meat. A ginormous shift in the diet choices of humans, this can be in part put down to the reported impact that such a change in food choices can have on our planet, leading people to opt to reduce or eliminate meat and/or dairy products. Humans can function well on a vegan or vegetarian diet, but can our pets? We’re seeing more and more vegetarian and vegan kibbles show up in the pet food market, leading some people to think that plant-based nutrition is a good idea for their cat or dog. According to a study published in PLOS One, over a third of pet owners in English-speaking countries have considered putting their pets on a plant-based diet. Yet experts warn to be cautious. The truth is that science is sparse in this area. We know that forgoing meat or being completely plant-based can be healthy for humans, but that doesn’t mean the same rules apply to our pets - particularly for felines. Lisa Freeman from the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine,

says the answers to whether cats can be healthy on a vegetarian diet is an “unequivocal no”. Cats are obligate or ‘true’ carnivores, meaning that they rely on animal flesh for certain nutrients. As humans we can convert beta-carotene from plant foods into active vitamin A, but cats can’t, they have to get this vitamin from meat. There are also some fatty acids that are essential for cats, which are only found in animal fats according to Jennifer Adolphe, animal nutritionist at University of Saskatchewan. And lets not forget the importance of Taurine for cats, which can be found in mammalian tissues – Taurine deficiency in cats can cause heart disease and vision problems. It is possible to add supplements to your cat’s foods, but Jennifer warns that you don’t just add these ingredients and hope for the best, as supplements don’t necessarily work in the same way as getting nutrients in a more natural way. Dogs are different to cats, but that doesn’t mean you should put your pup on a vegan diet without a second thought. There are amino acids that are essential for dogs that are not for humans – therefore we can’t

feed them the exact same diet that we consume. According to a 2018 review of plant-based diets for dogs, canines aren’t able to produce vitamin D3 easily from sunlight the way that humans do, they have to get this from animal products. Overall, it’s important that we remember our pets require different diets to us in order to get the nutrition they need to thrive. A lot more research needs to be done on the long-term effects of plant-based diets for pets before we would recommend reducing or eliminating meat in their diets. Don’t forget that on the flip side of this argument, we have the rising popularity of raw meat feeding, which has it’s own challenges that we have discussed before. For now, we believe high-protein, grain free, and low carb diets are the best for your pet. And if you would like our advice on the best pet food for your own pet, feel free to speak to our in-house nutritionist who would be more than happy to help you. We also recommend discussing your pets diet with your vet if you are thinking about making changes, or are worried about their health.

CHRISTMAS

AND YOUR DOG

The holiday season is upon us. It’s an exciting and magical time of year but with the decorations, the food and all the strange visitors it can sadly be stressful and dangerous for your beloved pooch. The key to a happy and safe holiday season is preparation. For example, if you know your dog has problems with people, be that fearfulness, fear aggression or simply over excitement now is as great time to address these issues. 12

Prepare the house with separate areas where your dog will be safe and can retreat to if necessary. Even the most social of dogs can become overwhelmed by lots of visitors. This division and creation of safe spaces can be done using a crate or baby gates in a quiet area of the house. Start acclimatising your dog to these areas now. Feed him his meals in here, play with him and make sure to offer feeding toys and chews in these areas.

Invest in some new toys for your dog pre Christmas to keep him entertained whilst you are busy. Toys that encourage foraging and snuffling are perfect for this. Take the time to read up on doggy body language. Learn the subtle signs that your dog might be becoming overwhelmed. For example, many people see humping as a sign of dominance when it is actually a sign of stress. Other signs may include yawning, licking his lips, turning his head away from people, freezing or stiffening up or giving a hard side- ways stare known as “whale eye”. Educate your visitors too, particularly those with Children on what not to do around dogs. Lay out the ground rules and write them down somewhere that everyone can see them, such as the fridge door. These

Photo credit: Tara Hamilton should include not approaching the dog whilst he is resting, eating or if he has stolen an item he shouldn’t have. The rules should also include not feeding him any food other than his own. Taking the time to do some obedience training as well, could potentially save your dog’s life. One exciting part of the holiday season is the food. This can be bad news for your dog though as raisins, cooked bones and chocolates are highly dangerous to all dogs. By teaching your dog to leave food and to drop items using rewards and positive reinforcement you can prevent accidents. Preventing access to the kitchen is also a good safety measure. When it comes to dealing with introducing your dog to visitors, the method used will depend on how your dog is with people. For all dogs management and prevention is important. Prevent them from performing the behaviours you do not want, so you can reward and get the behaviours you do want. If your dog loves to jump on people to say hi, then leash him or have him behind a baby gate when greeting people. Then focus on rewarding him for keeping his feet on the floor, typically a big handful of treats thrown on to the floor will allow him to

focus elsewhere and calm him down a little. If your dog shows fear towards people, whether it is through avoidance, or through aggressive behaviours, then distance and management are key. Keep your dog at a distance that they feel safe and relaxed and use food to help them create new positive associations with people. Remember not to force your dog to interact if he does not want to. If you know your dog is particularly going to struggle with the holiday season, or you are going to be out a lot, then please consider using a quality daycare or boarding service. It could also be worth seeking the advice of a force free behaviourist as well. Have a fabulous holiday season, be safe and have fun. Teaching your dog to leave food Start with some tasty treats in both hands. With one hand behind your back, keep the other hand closed, say your dog’s name and “Leave it” and offer the closed hand to your dog. As your dog licks and paws at your hand simply wait for him to back off and away from your hand. When he does say “Yes” and reward him with a treat from the hand behind your dog.

Teaching your dog to drop Start with some tasty treats. Say your dog’s name and “drop” and offer the treat. Repeat this a lot. Then try with your dog’s toys whilst he’s playing. Always swap with something that is better than what he already has.

LEO’S STORY

I

’m immensely pleasured to be writing about my rescue dog, Leo starting off with his breed, he’s a mix of jack russel and chihuahua. A mix of two naughty yet big personality breeds. He was abandoned by his owners at the Abu Dhabi animal shelter (aka Falcon hospital) after two years of having him with them with no stated reason. On the 23 of December, 2018 my pug (Simba) had got admitted at the Falcon hospital for a severe heart attack and passed away the next day. The eve of December, when everyone was celebrating we were moaning and I was so scared of everything because it was my first dog death experience it was terrible and I had never felt such pain before. On the same day, the staff at the Falcon hospital couldn’t see me and my Mom looking so down and suggested I adopt another dog to fill up his place. I refused as I was so scared to get attached to any more dogs. My Mom and other relatives of mine encourage me to adopt one, so I went to look for dogs if there were any I could choose from. All the dogs were huge and I gave up because

every dog there barking felt like they just wanted to leave from that tiny place they lived in. Then, came this cute little medium sized dog who jumped on me and started licking me like he knew me forever, just like my pug Simba would do and I felt it was just a sign that I needed to take him home, already and so I did. Today, it’s been almost 9 months and he’s the best addition to all of us in the family. He is such a disciplined dog and gives nothing but love, love, love. Hoping to adopt many more dogs in the future! Written by Shruthi Tuti

Two Turtle Do(ves)gs There have been several pairs of dogs left behind at K9 Friends recently, all about to spend their first Christmas in a shelter rather than in the homes that they have been used to. They are worried Father Christmas won’t be able to find them in the shelter and they won’t get their presents. Dogs should never be given as a Christmas present or without it being a family decision: K9 Friends see ‘unwanted Christmas presents’ dumped at the shelter in January every year. However, if your family is ready for a dog (or two) then look no further.

If you aren’t able to offer a forever-home but would love to look after a dog over the holidays, then there are many other dogs at K9 Friends who are available to foster. If welcoming a dog into your home is not possible then how about Sponsoring a Dog? This makes a great gift for someone and helps K9 Friends look after the 120 dogs who will be spending their Christmas in the shelter.

These two beautiful dogs were abandoned at a boarding facility and have been waiting patiently for their owner to return. Sadly that won’t happen as the owners have left the country. Mack is a bouncy 4-year-old Desert Dog boy who loves to paddle and Beth is a 7 year old Labrador girl with lots of love to give. They are safe and happy at K9 Friends but their Christmas wish is for a new family who won’t abandon them again. They have been together for years and would love to find a new home together.

Hailey and Saphira were brought to K9 Friends when their owners relocated without them. At 10 and 11 years old they deserve to be in a comfortable home not at the shelter, however much love they receive from the volunteers. These two Papillon ladies would love a home together to spend their retirement being pampered and cuddled.

Shabby and Sushi are both 7 years old, have always lived together and are currently sharing a kennel at K9 Friends after their owners left them behind. Shabby is a large Otterhound cross who loves to check out every bush and tree when he goes for a walk. His ‘sister’ Sushi is a pretty Canaan girl who is gentle and calm. They would love to spend Christmas back in a home again.

We would be extremely grateful for your support. Phone: 04 887 8739 Email: info@k9friends.com Opening hours: Saturday to Thursday 9am - 1pm

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP

I

t is that time of year again. And no, I’m not talking about the festive season. It’s also the season where all dog owners go outside to enjoy time with their pooch at dog parks or restaurants.

In the last year we’ve explored a lot of amazing restaurants. Even licensed ones. We did fun activities like Puppy Pilates and even went to dog friendly events. But I think we had our best adventure a few weeks ago while exploring our capital; Abu Dhabi. Cause who could think that you can have an amazing day out with your dog and enjoy a nice BBQ at one of the beautiful islands in Abu Dhabi? Or visit the mangroves or go out for a fishing trip? Our captain Mohamed from Kashta was very kind. He showed us the beautiful mangroves and brought us to a few islands where dogs are allowed. We saw nature at it’s best. Beautiful fish in the clear blue water and many birds. He even brought us to an island where some people have vacation houses and where we could find a gorgeous lake full with geese. But Mohamed also took the time to show us more of the beautiful architecture in the city. There are so many canals where you can go through that give you a totally different view of this beautiful city. My dog Boefje enjoyed this day out a lot. The first part of the trip was on open water to get from Al Raha to the mangroves. 26

I can’t say she was a big fan of those first few minutes. The water was a little rough and she wasn’t used to being on the water. But after that everything was fine and she enjoyed having the wind in her hair. When we came at the first island, she couldn’t wait to get off and roll around in the sand. To be able to walk off the leash, go in the water and run and play around, was a great experience for her which she doesn’t have too often. We chose to spend the day going from island to island but like I said, there are a lot of other options as well. Just ask Mohamed what is possible or tell him what you would like. Why not spend the day on one of the islands with the whole family or a group of friends and enjoy a nice BBQ while you watch your dog(s) play and run around? Or ask Mohamed to bring a kayak so you can enjoy a trip in in the mangroves by yourself. There are so many possibilities. I know one thing for sure and that is that I will be back soon while the weather is so lovely. You can find Doggie adventures in Dubai on Instagram and Facebook where we show you all dog friendly places in Dubai and the rest of the UAE like restaurants, parks, beaches, activities, event and even staycations.
