ASK OUR
NUTRITIONIST Samantha Frost
1 Question from londonjem on Instagram My cat keeps peeing next to her litter box in the corner, even when her litter is clean. What could be the reason?
Answer: The most common reason for cats urinating outside of their litter box is that they don’t like the litter box or the litter. If you have ruled out any medical issues with your vet, then it’s time to reassess your set up. Try different litters first, some cats will prefer crystal cat litter and others will prefer clumping clay, for example. We have different options that you can try to find what works for your kitty:
There are also a number of different litter box styles that you can try. Some cats might like having a rim, others won’t. Some cats prefer to have a covered litter tray, too. Savic Oscar or Nestor litter trays are good for kitties who are more private, and the Savic Iriz Litter Tray is a good option if you want something simple.

Question from lilfranklestein on Instagram
Question from nadine_raed on Instagram
My Shiba Inu puppy has a lot of dandruff, how can we get rid of it?
My dog won’t stop barking - help!
Answer:
Answer:
Low levels of moisture in the air can take moisture from your dog’s skin, which makes him itch and flake. This is particularly common in spring and summer and if your pet suffers from seasonal allergies – it’s best to check in with your vet to rule out any bigger issues.
There are a few reasons why your dog may constantly be barking.
A lot of puppies seem to suffer with dandruff or dry, flaky skin, this is quite normal and is more common in pups with dark coats. Steps to get rid of dandruff: 1. Regularly groom your dog. This is a simple way to maintain your dog’s coat and keep dandruff at bay – we have fantastic groomers at our Motor City shop, but if you decide to groom from home ensure you have a good puppy shampoo such as Puppy Love from Animology or Bio Groom Fluffy Puppy Shampoo. 2. Give your puppy supplements, treats, and foods that are packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is a great option to boost your pet’s omega-3, and there are a lot of supplements and foods on the market that contain salmon. In terms of food, the Fish4Dogs range is fantastic as it’s solely fish-based, Puppy White Ocean Fish would benefit your pups coat. 3. Use a humidifier in your home.
3 Question from laniejolie on Instagram I have noticed my three cats have less hair on their legs, is it due to the ceramic floor in my home?
Answer: If your cat is losing hair it could be due to a number of reasons. These include ringworm, fungal skin infections, hormonal problems, and infestations of fleas or mites. Look out for your cat losing hair on their belly, back, and inside their back legs as these could be signs of a medical condition. It is unlikely that ceramic flooring is the cause of hair loss with all three of your cats.
1. Dogs left alone for long periods of time, whether in the house or the garden, can become bored or sad and will often bark because they are unhappy. 2. Some dogs bark when they greet humans or other dogs, or when they’re playing. 3. Separation anxiety can cause compulsive barking which might be the issue if your dog is constantly barking when you’re not around. Some pointers for preventing barking: 1. Keep your dog in a quiet part of the house where he won’t be disturbed. 2. Keep the curtains or shades closed so he isn’t distracted or upset by what’s outside. 3. Leave the radio or the TV on as background noise this can keep your dog happy when you’re not around. 4. Give your dog a chew toy with your scent on it as you leave, it should distract him when you’re going and your scent will comfort him when he realizes you’ve left.
I would love to talk to you about your pet’s nutrition! Please drop me an email on nutrition@petsdelight.com or direct message us on social media @PetsDelight with your questions. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

HEATSTROKE SIGNS TO LOOK OUT
FOR THIS SUMMER Summer is upon us and if you’re a new pet parent, you might be concerned about how you’re going to keep your dog comfortable. Or if you’ve had dogs for a while, you might need to refresh your mind on the heatstroke signs to look out for. Signs: • •
•
•
Excessive panting and an increased heart rate are the earliest signs that your dog is overheating A change in your dog’s gums is a serious sign that he is suffering from heatstroke, bright or dark red gums and tongue means that he has already overheated White and sticky gums are a sign that they are in a lethargic stage and need to go to the vets as soon as possible Vomiting and diarrhea are also symptoms of heatstroke
Important steps to take if you think your dog has heatstroke Heatstroke can be deadly, so it’s really important to take steps quickly if you’re concerned that your dog might be suffering. The following are things that you can do from home, but if your dog is getting to the lethargic stage you need to get him to the vets as soon as possible.
•
•
•
Ice packs wrapped in cold wet towels – wring them out so that they aren’t dripping wet – are one of the quickest ways to cool your dog down. Remember that the only place dogs can sweat from is their paws, so cooling these down in particular is important. Getting sugar into your dog’s system – is a good idea if you think he is overheating. Put a pea-size drop of honey onto your fingertip and gently rub it into his gums. If you have a thermometer at home put it up his backside to gauge his temperature. If he is above 39 degrees Celsius then he is in the danger zone and you need to get him to the vet. It is crucial that you bring his temperature down slowly to avoid him going into shock and/or a different danger zone: hypothermia. If you bring his temperature down too quickly and it goes below 37 degrees Celsius too fast, then this can happen.
Preventing your dog from getting to this stage is obviously preferable. Limiting his amount of time outdoors, only walking him last thing in the evening or first thing in the morning are both good choices to make in these hot summer months. For more information about the risks of heatstroke, how to prevent it, or what to do if you think your dog has it, speak to your vet.

The Ziwi difference Slow and gently air-dried pet food
Air-drying is a technique that has been used for centuries to naturally preserve meats. Our modern method stays true to this artisan approach, while eliminating the need for artificial preservatives, sugars or glycerines. Raw pet food that is air-dried has all of it's moisture removed via evaporation - this minimises the damage to proteins, vitamins, and sensitive nutrients and enzymes are contained so your pet is getting nearly all of the benefits of a raw food diet. Our slow, gentle, twin stage air-drying process crafts a food that is as nutrientdense and digestible as a completely raw diet but safe, clean to handle and can store for up to 21 months. We are sure your dog or cat will love it!

HOW TO KEEP AIR-DRIED PET FOOD FRESH Opening your pouch Firstly, cut carefully along the marked line on the reverse of the pouch. Ensure that you do not cut into the seal below the line as this will compromise the closure of the pouch. To open the pouch, use both hands, pulling apart each side of the pouch evenly.
Storage Storage is an important part of keeping Ziwi Peak fresh for feeding! We highly recommend that you do not do the following: • Do not store in a zip lock bag • Do not store in a plastic storage container • Do not store in the fridge or freezer • Do not leave your Ziwi Peak pouch open and un-sealed • Do not leave your Ziwi Peak pouch in direct sunlight or near a heat source
Feeding Feed Ziwi Peak with the scoop we have provided for you in the pouch. If you use your hands to scoop the food out of the pouch you risk spoiling the food if your hands are wet or damp or there is other food matter on your hands.
Closing your pouch Closing your pouch correctly is another important part of keeping your Ziwi Peak fresh for feeding! To close your Ziwi Peak pouch, run your fingers firmly along the seal. Make sure that you have successfully joined both sides of the seal together. Repeat this action a few times, going right to each edge, ensuring that no air can get into the pouch. Store your pouch in a cool area, out of direct sunlight.
GOOD HEALTH STARTS WITH GREAT NUTRITION When we talk about premium, healthy pet food, it often comes with a label of being ‘too costly’. Guess what? Complete and hypoallergenic food for your pup can be purse-friendly too! Manufactured in their own factory in the UK, Vitalin’s super premium range combines a perfect blend of ingredients, nutritional expertise and modern manufacturing techniques to create delicious, balanced food for your pet. Following a holistic approach, they carefully select and source ingredients from local farms in the UK. We love their endeavour to not only source the best ingredients but environmentally-friendly too.
WHY VITALIN? • Nutritionally complete and balanced recipes • Grain free (applies to all adult recipes) • Hypoallergenic & wheat gluten free • Contains botanicals & prebiotics • No added artificial colours, flavours or preservatives
TESTIMONIAL "Came across Vitalin after it was recommended by a friend. My dog doesn't respond well to most types of dry food, even the ones considered the best ones on the market. So I'd given the sensitive Vitalin dry food initially and the results were great. Eventually tried out the other non-sensitive adult dry food by vitalin and my dog responded well to those too. So, in short Vitalin's price point is amazing and it's the brand my dog handles the best, win-win situation." By, Ahmed Qadri (Pet’s Delight customer)

SIGNS
OF ARTHRITIS IN PETS
What to do if your dog is suffering from arthritis Get him moving. One of the best things for arthritis is movement, the less your dog moves the worse his condition could get.
Pick up the right supplements. Supplements and painkillers are crucial to ensure your dog is comfortable; movement will be painful for him if he’s not taking the right supplements and painkillers.
Feed him premium pet food. Feeding a good quality pet food is central to your dog’s comfort if he suffers from arthritis; this is because you need to keep him at a healthy weight for him to be comfortable.
Regular check ups.
Arthritis is an extremely common problem in pets, and it can be incredibly painful for them. What is arthritis? Arthritis is inflammation of the joints whereby cartilage within the joints are damaged and the bone surfaces rub together.
What are the signs of arthritis? • • • • • • •
Stiffness, particularly in the mornings Seizing up after walks Hip problems are often found in big dogs such as German Shepherds and Labradors Licking joints constantly in the same area Walking more slowly than normal Struggling with stairs or getting onto higher surfaces such as the bed Wobbling or moving differently when walking
Ideally you would visit the vet with your dog every month to ensure he is receiving the best treatment possible. As extreme arthritis often occurs in older dogs or specific breeds such as German Shepard’s, these dogs may require physiotherapy to help them manage the pain. Aqua sports are also a great idea for loosening the joints. For more advice on the signs and symptoms of arthritis, or how to take care of your pet if he has arthritis, speak to your vet.

Most dogs need to be groomed a little bit every four to six weeks. If your dog seems like he really hates being groomed, it might be because in previous sessions he has had matting removed and it’s not comfortable for him, so try brushing him regularly and you should see an improvement.
Research grooming BEFORE you get your dog The majority of pet owners don’t do any research into how to look after their dog’s coat before they get their new dog. We often educate pet owners on how their dog’s coat should be styled best to protect their coat – which isn’t always the look that the owner is wanting. It’s always best to do your research into grooming for the dog breed you are going to get to make sure you’re prepared.
THINGS OUR HEAD GROOMER WISHES YOU KNEW… Our head groomer, Jovinel, has been a groomer for 10 years, it’s fair to say he knows his stuff and he’s groomed a LOT of pets! Here are some things he thinks everyone should know about pet grooming…
Even if your dog seems nervous, he’ll be ok Often when pets arrive at our grooming salon they are nervous – this is normal. They’re in a different setting, and some of them know what’s coming and having a groom might not be their favourite thing to do. When some pets arrive they might be shaking, and some owners understandably are worried. But they will calm down; it’s our job to make sure they feel comfortable. 16
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
Different dogs present us with different challenges Grooming can be physically demanding, more so than most people think. We work with pets of all sizes. Smaller pups are easy to lift but can be a challenge to groom because they’re so tiny. The big ones can be stubborn, which presents it’s own challenges. This makes everyday different in this job which most groomers enjoy, but it’s also one of the main reasons why the price of grooming your pet is normally more expensive than your own hair cut.
Regular brushes really helps us Brushing your pet regularly prevents matting, which is really difficult for a groomer to get out. They’re also painful for your furball.
It’s super helpful if you massage your dog’s feet A lot of dogs hate having their feet touched. If this is ringing bells for you, it would be great if you could massage your dogs feet from time to time so he gets used to it. It prevents him from nipping at us when we go to cut his nails.
Grooming cats is totally different to grooming dogs Cats are hard to hold and are normally more anxious than dogs. They’re also more honest when they’re angry, and are likely to be aggressive straight away whereas dogs will give a warning snap at first. This is why it’s really important to tell us what your pet’s temperament is like. Although we are familiar with breeds and normally know what to expect, it’s really handy when our customers tell us about their pet’s temperament. This helps us prepare, maybe we need a second groomer, for example.

MAX’S STORY brown pooch with one white paw. The woman said his name was Mark. I picked him up and he nestled calmly against my chest. I knew he was the gentlest of the puppies. The lady told me he had been adopted once before, but had been dumped here again. We went to look at other litters but none were as cute and loving as Mark. My mum and dad had some quick words and then asked me if I would like to take him home. I nearly jumped for joy! I had my own puppy! We picked him up and (after finishing some more paperwork) bundled him into the car. On the way home we decided to rename him Max. What a perfect name for the perfect pup. It has been a long journey... but I’m glad we’ve found the best dog in the world!
O
n the 26th of January, my family and I were browsing through the K9 Friends website when we saw the adorable pictures of dogs available for adoption. I have longed for a dog since I was two years old, so I scrolled through the photographs and stopped to gaze in adoration at each pup that was advertised. Then we came across the NEW ARRIVALS headline. Underneath was the photo of a puppy litter. We fell in love. That evening, we agreed that we should at least go to see the puppies. So, my dad rang them up and asked for an appointment. We were going! On the 2nd of Feb, we were prepared. Not planning to adopt a dog that day, we didn’t bring any toys or blankets, but we did bring a list of things we would like to ask. We knew we wanted a shorthair, because my brother is allergic to long fur. It makes him sneeze! Also, my mum’s friends who had dogs advised her to get a female, because they were easier to train and look after so we knew we wanted a female too. We set off to the K9 Friends rescue centre. How hard could it be?
"My family and I are strong animal lovers and we believe that animals deserve all the love, care and attention we can give them. I’m so glad we’ve finally got the perfect pet." -Written by Mara Machado-Mullett, Age 10
My mother had grown up in the countryside with fourteen dogs, and my dad grew up with cats so both of them had experience with animals. When we arrived I started to feel a bit nervous. I had never been in a rescue centre before. What would it be like? The loud barking of dogs was deafening. We walked up the marble steps and pushed open the glass door into the waiting room. A nice lady asked my dad a few questions while we sat on the sofa filling in some paperwork and reading PETS magazines. Then we were called into the interview room. A nice woman in a blue uniform sat at the desk. With a warm smile, she told us the procedures and asked if we would like to see the dogs. I couldn’t sit still. I was so excited! She led us past the adult dogs cages and into the puppy enclosures. After dipping our feet into some pink disinfectant, we entered. I gasped! Several squirming bundles of fur darted around our legs, pulling at our laces and chewing our trainers. Soon they settled down and I had a look at them. My favourite was a little blackishPET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

OUR UNSUNG HEROES LINDA & ALISON
As most of our customers will know, the growing number of stray animals in the UAE is a huge challenge for the pet community. With more and more stray cats and dogs appearing on the streets and without a solid solution from the Government yet in place, the UAE stray issue is largely on the shoulders of individuals who are trying their best to keep it under control whilst keeping the animals safe. Alison and Linda are the owners of pet relocation company Pet Express UAE. Alongside their day job, they are also passionate about helping stray animals in the UAE. 22
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
How many pets do you own/foster? ALISON – I have 7 cats and 1 Dog of my own, I currently have 1 Persian and 1 Mau up for adoption, both rescued from Cargo Village, Linda is currently fostering 8 kittens, found at the side of the road.
What made you want to help solve the stray problems in the UAE? LINDA – I rescued my first cat here in 1986, and it’s gone on from there.
How has the stray issue changed over the last couple of years, if at all? ALISON - many people are getting involved in TNR but it’s still not enough, although some vet clinics give a reduced rate, people run out of money, the government working in conjunction with vet clinics would be a solution.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to help? Where do they start? ALISON - If you feed them you have to back it up with TNR. A healthy, well fed cat is more likely to produce more kittens than a hungry unhealthy cat and the mortality rate for these cats is much higher. TNR is the BEST way to help.
Are there some fundamental changes that need to be made in the UAE to help get the stray challenges under control? LINDA - AWAD (Animal Welfare Abu Dhabi – Dr Susan Aylott) has started a fantastic TNR campaign where they target specific areas and vets donate a day of their time and they TNR as many as they can in that day. Something like that needs to be done in Dubai and other Emirates. The problem is not all people like cats, which is understandable, but there has to be education, they need to understand that by removing the cats, more will move in and take their place. Cats are territorial and a well fed, healthy, well managed, sterilised cat community will reduce rodents and discourage other cats from the area. “Relocating” them is cruel and serves no benefit, they will either be attacked by the resident cat community or worse starve to death because they don’t know where to look for their food. As our work with Pet Express UAE takes us to cargo village on a daily basis we feel a responsibility to tend to the small colony there, we feed and TNR. We have rescued and taken in a few as well, the vulnerable ones, Alison has Klunk and Mama, Linda has Squidge and Merlin.
Alison and Linda relocate pets all over the world with their company Pet Express UAE, for more information about pet relocation visit their website www.petexpressuae.com. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP
ummer is just around the corner and I think I speak for all the dog owners in Dubai if I say I prefer the winter months. We all know how it’s like, taking the dog out for a long walk only early in the morning and later at night. Normally we love to spend time outside during the day. But not during summer. If you’ve seen my previous story in the Ramadan Edition of the Pet’s Delight magazine, you noticed that I like to visit places with my dog, Boefje. I love to spend time with her on my days off and go to restaurants, parks and beaches. But we also visit events, activities and even go on staycations. But in summer, we stay inside. That’s why I’m very happy that I can tell you that I’ve discovered an indoor place that is dog friendly. We recently visited Kave, an upcycled cafe in Alserkal Avenue where they support a lifestyle that is good for yourself, the environment and for the community. They organize a lot of creative workshops and events at Kave but they also created a great place with a nice environment where you can enjoy drinks and good food. Their menu is not very big but they serve delicious and fresh food like their rice bowls and Pho. But the best part is that they allow dogs inside as well. Which is perfect for hot summer days. 26
