When emergency strikes, the last thing you want to be doing is scrambling for items you need to assist your pet. Give yourself and others in your household a piece of mind by assembling a handy pet first aid kit to make you feel more prepared in the event of an unfortunate situation. Emergency Contact Card Keep a note of your vet’s contact details and a 24hour emergency clinic, in case your vet is unavailable or closed. This is helpful to have especially if you have left your pet with a sitter who can access the details easily if necessary.
Tweezers Like the scissors, these are helpful to include should you need to remove sharp objects from your pet, like glass. Tweezers are a safer and more sanitary choice from removing sharp foreign objects.
Bandages These are a staple in any pet first aid kit. In many cases, the bandage you use after an injury will only be temporary, but it serves a crucial role in avoiding contamination until the wound can be looked at by your vet.
Antiseptic Wipes Wipes are a convenient way to help sterilise your pets wound to help minimise the risk of infection. Be sure to look for pet-friendly antiseptic wipes to ensure they are safe.
Blunt-Tipped Scissors Whether you are removing hair near an injury, or applying bandages, scissors are always useful to have on hand. Blunt-tipped are recommended as you don’t want to accidentally catch your pet if you are cutting close to the skin.
Sterile Eye Solution Eye injuries can be a really serious emergency, always consult your vet before attempting any treatment at home. If advised by your vet that you need to flush your pet’s eye, you will want a good solution on hand. While most generic eyewashes are suitable for use on your pet, there are some in the market specifically designed for the needs of dogs and cats.
Medications Depending on your pets’ specific needs, there may be certain medications that are worth keeping in your kit, but be sure to keep an eye on expiration dates. Additionally, to prescription meds, stocking standard remedies like styptic powder which is used to stop mild bleeding - useful in the event of a broken nail, or when a nail has been cut too close to the quick.

Muscle and Bone Development: High quality protein from animal ingredients support optimal muscle and bone growth and development.
•
Shiny Coat and Healthy Skin: Fish and fish oil are great sources of Omega fatty acids which will support a healthy skin and coat growth.
The Orijen Cat and Kitten recipe checks all the boxes to support the growth and development of kittens and is the best diet to start your kitten off on the right paw.
Why do I need to transition from Kitten food to Adult cat food? Once a kitten reaches maturity at about one year old, maintaining a diet rich in animal protein, EPA, DHA, taurine and Omega fatty acids remains integral to the overall health of the cat. Additionally, if your cat spends the majority or all their time indoors, consider a diet that will help with weight management. Orijen Fit and Trim has balanced calories from protein and fat which helps maintain a healthy body weight for those less-active cats who spend their days indoors.
What if I fed my Kitten an all life stages recipe?
THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDING YOUR CAT BASED ON THEIR LIFE STAGE Not all cats are built the same - kittens have different nutritional requirements than adult cats, and the same can be said for cats with differing physical activity levels. Kittens have specific dietary needs to support their rapid growth and development. Look for a complete and balanced diet with high quality protein from animal ingredients which play a key role in the following: •

Brain Development and Healthy Eyes: EPA, DHA, and Taurine, all found in the guaranteed analysis on the back of the bag will support healthy eye and brain function. WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
If you were feeding an all-life stage diet to your kitten, you can continue feeding that recipe into your cat’s adulthood. You will just want to ensure you reduce the amount you are feeding daily — we recommend you follow the feeding guide for adult maintenance. A slow reduction in feeding amount may be necessary, especially if your cat likes to beg for food. Remember that begging doesn’t necessarily mean your cat is still hungry – they may just love to eat! Whatever food you decide on for your cat, make sure you’re selecting a complete and balanced diet that’s appropriate for your cat’s life stage to help support a long, healthy and happy life.

Keep Medications Away
Believe it or not, rubbish bins can be REALLY interesting to your pup. The exciting smells are enough for your little friend to want to explore and have a rummage. Avoid messes and potentially toxic ingestion by blocking off access to your bin, or keep them covered and secured.
Consumption of human medications are a common source of poisoning for pets every year. Be sure to keep all medications and supplements safely stored in high up cabinets or draws around your home.
Set Space Limits Curious by nature, your pup will want to explore as much as they can around your home. Setting up baby gates or pen and closing doors will help you keep them out of trouble and in a controlled setting. But as much as it’s important to set your limits, it’s just as important to give them a safe space that they can go to when they want to settle down. Whether it’s a crate, a pen or a cosy corner on the couch, make sure they have access to their chosen spot to help them feel more at home.
Cover Your Cords Protect your pup from accidental shock, burns or worse, by ensuring your electronic cords are out of reach, or protected with sturdy cord covers and deterrent sprays. Always ensure your puppy is supervised when not in their pen or crate, and provide them with plenty of chew toys to give them something more exciting to chew on.

Dog Shedding:
What’s Normal And What’s Not There’s often one way of knowing exactly where your dog has been… The trail of hair left behind. But how much is too much when it comes to shedding and hair loss? Let’s find out.
REASONS WHY YOUR DOG SHEDS HAIR Dogs shedding hair is a normal and natural process – how much and how often comes down to their breed, the time of year and their general health. Here’s a breakdown of why your dog might be shedding hair 10
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
and when there might be cause for concern. 1. Breed: Certain breeds are more prone to shedding, like German Shepherds, Huskies, Retrievers, Labradors, and Saint Bernards. These breeds generally have longer, silkier hair with double coats (a topcoat contains coarse guard hairs, and the undercoat is softer, whereas single-coated breeds don’t have an undercoat). It’s recommended these breeds are brushed regularly to stimulate the hair
follicles, limiting the amount of loose hair that ends up on the floor to be vacuumed up. Dogs with shorter or more coarse coats tend to shed very little, like Bulldogs, Malteses, Poodles and Terriers. Even the ‘hypoallergenic’ dogs like Bichons and Schnauzers can shed a little – they just don’t have the dander (similar to dandruff) some people are allergic to. If your dog has a shorter coat and they’re shedding excessively, they may have a health issue that needs attention. 2. Seasonal shedding: Dogs shed naturally in spring and sometimes fall when the weather is warming up or changing. You’re less likely to see an issue with shedding in winter as biologically their coat grows thicker for warmth. If your dog is shedding more than usual throughout and into winter, that could be cause for concern.
SIGNS YOUR DOG IS SHEDDING MORE THAN NORMAL If you’re noticing more hair than usual in their bed (or on yours), bald patches, irritated and inflamed dry skin, or an increased amount of itching, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue. Their coat is just what’s visible on the surface, but it can help you to better understand your dog’s overall health.
There are two main reasons your dog could be shedding too much: Is your dog allergic? An allergy can be the culprit behind inflamed, itchy skin, which gets your dog scratching at their hair more than usual. Your dog could be: •
•
•
Having an allergic reaction to fleas or ticks, bacteria, fungus, or parasites like mites or mange. Allergic to something in their environment, like pollen and dust, laundry detergents used on their bedding, shampoo, or even grass. Suffering from a food allergy. If you think it could be something in your dog’s food, it’s best to work with your vet to create an elimination diet to do just that – zero in on the culprit by cutting back on potentially inflammatory ingredients, such as grains, potatoes, or meat proteins.
How to fix it: While you may be able to control any environmental factors making your dog uncomfortable, if you think your dog is suffering from an allergy or something out of the ordinary for them, consult with your vet to help determine the cause so that you can develop the best course of action.
Is their diet the best it could be? A poor-quality diet could be the reason behind your dog’s less-than-ideal coat, increased shedding or excessive itching. Without a diet rich in beneficial vitamins and minerals, your dog’s general health could be suffering. There are also many unnecessary ingredients like artificial flavors, grains, starches, and sugars in many processed pet foods. These might not be sitting well with your pup’s digestive system as they tend to be highly processed and as a result, low on bio-available nutrients. Another point to note is that not enough clean water can also dehydrate a dog’s skin, which can lead to skin issues and loss of hair. How to fix it: As with us, your dog’s skin is a reflection of their inner health; if they aren’t getting enough essential vitamins and minerals, their coat is one way they’re communicating with you that something isn’t quite right. Put simply, a healthy dog has a healthy coat. A high-quality, whole-prey diet can improve your dog’s inner health and reveal a soft, shiny coat that’s longing to be pet. A key ingredient proven to help is Omegas 3 fatty acids. It also helps with a whole host of good health benefits, from dental hygiene to joint issues.

Is Crate Training Right For You And Your Dog? Some pet parents worry that “locking their dog up” in their crate could be cruel on them, but if introduced and used correctly it can become one of their favourite places to be! What may look like a basic enclosure to you can actually feel like home to them, with a few additions of course.
•
12
Giving your dog a space of their own: Dogs tend to prefer protected places when settling down, so a crate is a great way to tap into their natural instinct to rest in a safe space. By picking an appropriately sized crate and taking the time to gradually introduce your dog will help them consider making this their comfy refuge.
•
Potty training: A big plus to crate training is it helps aid the housetraining process, as most pups won’t soil where they sleep. When they start to get the hang of the process it can be a key step in their potty-training.
•
Providing a safe recovery zone: Should a medical procedure or injury happen during your dog’s life; you may need to restrict their movement. Making sure they are comfortable and happy in their crate can make this process easier for you and less stressful on them. WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
•
Traveling with your dog: Traveling with your dog both internationally and in the boot of the car can become easier and less stressful on them if they are familiar to confined space of a crate.
•
Correctly sized crate: Your dog’s crate should be large enough so that your dog can stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably, but not much more than that. Don’t be tempted to purchase an oversized crate, as the more room you give them the harder potty training will be.
•
Bedding: Keep your dog comfortable with appropriate yet simple crate mat.
•
Blanket: To create more of a ‘cave’ like experience for your pup, drape over the top of their crate with a light blanket. Be sure not to use a thick/ heavy blanket to ensure they don’t over heat when they are inside.
•
Treats: Tasty treats are essential to create a positive crate introduction experience, and any other positive training you want to do with your dog! Head to pages 4-5 for some pawfect treat inspiration.
•
Toys: It’s important to find toys that can offer your dog some mental stimulation when left alone inside their crate. It helps keep them entertained and happy until they drift off to sleep. Try treat-stuffable toys like KONG!
An ideal place to consider would be a location that is quiet enough for your dog to rest, but not too far away from the household where they would feel isolated. Try a corner of your living room or another area your households gathers in regularly. Night time for pups it is particularly important to keep them close to where you sleep. Pups often need regular toilet breaks throughout the night, so it’s helpful to be close enough so you can hear when they need to go out. This is where it can be helpful to have two crates for day to night to help aid the process.
Do not keep your dog in the crate for too long and always keep an eye on the time. Particularly for puppies who struggle to hold for long at very early age. As a rough estimate, trial their age in months and translate that to hours for their “hold time”. For example: 3-month pup can hold for about 3 hours, but playtime and excitement can make them need to go more regularly too. For adult dogs, avoid crating them for more than 4 hours.
Feed your dog’s meals inside their crate with the door open. This process helps to associate it as a positive space.
Get to know their noises. There’s a difference between “neediness” and “I need to pee” sounds. If your pup is still whining after a toilet trip, leave them to settle in for a few minutes.
Never use the crate for punishment. This is crucial that their crate remains their happy and safe space, if introduced otherwise will undo all of your previous positive reinforcement.
Always give your dog a toilet break before putting them inside their crate, and don’t forget to take them for toilet straight after letting them out the crate for a period of time. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

A
s most cat parents will know, cats are notorious for living life on their own terms and that doesn’t tend to involve taking medications. But, if you have been advised by your vet to give your cat medication in pill form, it is your responsibility to ensure they take it.
2
Giving a cat pills can often be a challenge; however, it is an important skill to master and is absolutely possible when you are armed with the right tricks and tools. If your vet has instructed that your cats medicine must be given with food, try out the “meatball”. Place the pill in the centre of a small ball of canned food or cheese. If the meatball option doesn’t work for you, or your cat’s medication is required intake on an empty stomach, here are steps to follow to give your cat a pill:
1
Hold Your Cat You’ll need to have a good grasp on your kitty to make this work. Set yourself up somewhere you and your cat are both comfortable. Wherever you settle, make sure the medication is in reach.
3
Prepare the Pill To save your fingers from biting, use a pet piller. Pet piller is a long, plastic plunger that will allow you to deposit the pill far back into your cat’s mouth without risking your hands getting a chomp. To set up your piller, extend the plunger and load the pill inside. Make sure it’s properly positioned so it doesn’t fall out before you administer it, and use your dominant hand to hold it.
4 5
Open Your Cat’s Mouth Using your non-dominant hand, place It on your cat’s upper jaw, with your thumb on one side and fingers on the opposite side of their cheekbones. Gently apply pressure to encourage your cat to lower their jaw. A cat opens their mouth by dropping their lower jaw, so avoid prying it upwards. Hold with gentle pressure until your cat opens their mouth.
6
Putting the Pill Inside Your Cat’s Mouth With your cat’s mouth open, insert the piller so the pill is close to the back of your cat’s mouth. Aim for near the base of the tongue as much as possible and press the plunger to release the pill. You will want to act quickly with this step.
Hold Their Mouth Closed Use one or both hands to keep a gentle hold on your cat’s mouth. Keeping your cat’s mouth closed will prevent them spitting the pill back out. You can encourage them to swallow by softly stroking their throat whilst you stay in position for a while. Be patient with this step.
Reward Your Cat When the pill has been swallowed successfully, always give verbal praise and a treat. You want to end their experience on a positive note!

PET STORIES
ROCCO’S
STORYM Adopted from
y name is Rocco and I was 7 months old when I met my forever family. Momma said I melted her heart and had a very special place inside forever. My life plus their lives had just changed forever as we became a family with so much love which grows everyday. Dad and I play all the time. He even taught me football, but I just like to take the ball away and have him chase me. Momma showers me with love and all the snuggles I want along with treats. Momma says she can’t imagine her life without me because I am so special. Now I am almost three. We had another big change in our life. I got to fly on a big jet. It seemed like forever momma said I was going to be a US boy now!!!

Momma and I are having so much fun and so many new things here in the US. We have adventures, new things to do everyday, lots of new smells, and I played in snow for the first time in my life, I have a new bestie that I get to live with so we play all the time all day long. Dad will be joining us soon. I can’t wait to show him all the new things here. Momma showers with me with so much love and snuggles everyday as she tells me her life is so much better with me in it. I love my family so much and we found each other when we all needed it. Our lives are complete together, nothing will separate us. Written by Jennifer Geraci and Enyeribe Chinonso
CALLING ALL CAT LOVERS
Are you a crazy cat lover? Then Meow Café is the purrrfect spot for you!
What is the story behind Meow Café? And what inspired you?
How many cats do you have and where did they come from?
The idea behind opening the cafe is to spread cat love to all. This is the idea of a 10 years old girl trying to access cat cafes in Japan and other countries but children were not allowed. She loves and cares for cats and she felt children should not be pre-judged and establish a rule to prevent them from entering the cafe. She believed that children are more capable to take responsibility and be a feline lover.
Right now we have 11 cats in the cafe but there are 14 in total.
As cat lovers, we wanted to create a safe, fun, and unique environment where cats could hang out with people & especially kids. We believe people should be able to relax, be inspired, and celebrate cats. Our cafe is a great place to make friends (both humans and cats!), and to eat and drink excellent food. There are millions of cat lovers out there, some of whom may not even know they enjoy cats yet. Some people are unable to have cats due to where they live and their lifestyle. People can experience healing serenity at Meow Cafe because cats bring so many benefits, including improving your mood and well-being.
Most of them are adopted from their past owners and some of them are rescued / “bought” for a good reason. We bought Misha because we saw her in the store, she was in a horrible condition. We took her home with us, treated her and she became a member of our family. The same goes to our beloved Yuri.
Are the cats at your café up for adoption? Unfortunately, our cats are not up for adoption and selling. Each cat within our cafe has its part in our family, we are connected to each one of them. Each has a different personality and they bring us so much joy to see them interacting with each other. Pet health experts say arthritis is extremely prevalent in felines, affecting about 45% of all cats, and 90% of cats older than 12. FDA has now approved the first medication to treat pain associated with arthritis in cats. It’s also the first monoclonal antibody approved in the U.S. for use in any animal species. LYME DISEASE IN DOGS
WHAT PET PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
How is Lyme Disease Treated for Dogs? In most common cases dog’s will be prescribed with an antibiotic for a minimum of four weeks, plus an anti-inflammatory if your dog is especially uncomfortable. Typically, it can resolve within a few days from starting the course of antibiotics, but in some cases, it could take a few rounds if your dog remains infected.
How to Prevent the Disease? •
Keep your dog protected with a long-lasting tick treatment throughout the year. Ticks thrive in heat, so it’s especially important to keep them topped up whilst living in the UAE.
•
Always check your dog for ticks after they have taken trips through tall grass, bushes etc. Ticks love to hide under dogs’ armpits, in ears, shoulder blades and any other hard-to-reach areas.
What to Do If Your Dog Has A Tick? •
L
yme disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases and if left untreated can cause serious complications for your dog.
•
The disease is caused when a pup is bitten by an infected tick and they become sick. The most common symptoms of the disease are: fever, inflammation of the joints and tiredness.
• •
In some cases, Lyme Disease can cause lack of appetite, flared lymph nodes, sensitivity to touch and even damage to the kidneys which can lead to kidney failure.
How is Lyme Disease Diagnosed in Dogs? Often the disease can be difficult to diagnose because the signs are nonspecific and be similar to other diseases or bacterial infections. Vets can identify Lyme Disease by reviewing your dog’s history and their exposure to ticks, physical exams and lab testing.
•
•
Spread your dog’s fur around the tick to better your view. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with a pair of tick removal tweezers. Pull the tick slowly and steadily straight out. Drop the tick in rubbing alcohol in a jar and close with a lid. (If your dog shows any signs of Lyme disease later, you can take the tick to your vet for testing.) Wipe the skin where the tick was attached with an antiseptic, then apply a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment to the skin. If the skin remains irritated or infected after removal, get your dog checked out by your vet.
