OUR LATE SUMMER EDITION

W

ell done folks, we are half way through summer and the sweltering heat! The end is definitely in sight.

We at Pet's Delight have some great ideas to help you and your pet tackle the long summer days, whether it be our DIY summer treats - that will keep your pet entertained for hours - or where to eat with your pet. This month we highlight the importance of dental health. Canagan - our premium UK brand - has just launched their trail blazing new dental range. We often talk about the importance of teeth brushing, but many dog owners don't do it as often as they should. Canagan have joined forces with PlaqueOff to create a unique dental product which helps protect your dogs teeth with every bite. Many of you will have just returned back from a lovely vacation and will be excited to be reunited with your beloved pooch. However, some of you will notice that your furbaby has slipped into bad bathroom habits while you have been away. Training Corner (pages 8-9) should refresh your memory and help you get back into a routine. And no, we have not forgotten our wonderful cat parents: Why your cat might act strangely when you get back from vacation should help you with any issues too. Not enough attention is given to our senior pets. Our article (page 13) on At what age does your kitty become a senior cat, should give you an insight into what changes to expect and what you have to take into consideration. We constantly strive to bring our stores closer to you, and this September I think you will agree that we have aced it yet again! Stay tuned for what's next... We have just delivered our unique loyalty program - that is not only the most generous in the market - but first to truly integrate points between online and shops. Most will agree that we are definitely market leader with more exciting schemes to come! Looking forward to the season ahead. Thank you for joining us on our journey and thank you for shopping with us. Remember: With every purchase you help feed a dog in need!

ASK OUR

NUTRITIONIST Samantha Frost

1 Do you recommend raw for cats?

Question from stellapurrkins on Instagram

Answer: As a pet parent you may have heard about the benefits and drawbacks of feeding a raw diet to your dog or cat. Many dog owners in particular hail this method of feeding for helping their pets who may not have thrived on the diet they were fed before. There are a number of nutritional benefits to feeding raw if prepared correctly, the issue is that it’s usually time-consuming, expensive, and messy to get right, and the downsides to getting it wrong can be fatal. Cats need the right balance of nutrition to live a happy and healthy life, when it comes to a raw diet this involves meticulously weighing meats and vegetables and adding vitamins and minerals – the measurements depend on a number of things too such as your cats weight, age, and how often he or she exercises. We would recommend discussing the right recipes and portions for your cat with your vet. Once you’ve got this right, then you need to be aware of some of the dangers of raw feeding in terms of preparation. It’s correct that salmonella isn’t necessarily fatal to your pet, but the same can’t be said for your family or for yourself. Salmonella can be spread during the preparation of the raw food, if you get salmonella on your hands or clothing, you can spread the bacteria to other people, objects, and surfaces. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after preparing the food and wipe down all surfaces and utensils with disinfectant. Salmonella can also be passed through saliva, so it’s best to avoid kissing your pet if he’s on a raw diet. Feeding your pet raw food will allow you to truly tailor the diet, however you should be aware of some of the dangers. If you don’t feel ready for raw there are many great quality kibbles which contain all of the nutrition that your pet requires, and I’m happy to help you find the right one for your pet.

2 My puppy doesn't have much of an appetite and barely eats, I've tried different food too?

CANAGAN KIBBLE SIZES

Question from tofinotack on Instagram

Answer: I would need to know a lot more about your puppy before I could give you tailored advice for why this might be happening. Generally, dogs can be quite fussy with their food. One of the main challenges we have that many people don’t know about, particularly with elderly, puppies, and small breeds, is finding the right kibble size. Often these types of dogs need a smaller kibble or they find it difficult to eat the food. Brands such as Canagan understand these issues and have created a range with many different kibble sizes and shapes, so that you can find the right one for your dog. There are other reasons why your dog might refuse his food. If you have changed the food recently this could be the cause, particularly if you are upgrading the food to a more premium and nutritional kibble. I know this sounds a little odd, but think about it this way: Some brands of pet food are junk. Junk food exists in the pet food industry just as much as it does in the human food industry – the challenge is that they often aren’t marketed as such, but we will discuss that another time. If your dog has previously been on one of these ‘junk diets’ and you try to move him onto a better food, he might refuse it. Like you might not want to switch from chocolate to apples… The best way to combat this is to introduce it gradually over the course of 7-10 days, this is also much better for his stomach which can become sensitive with a sudden switch of kibble. Mix the old kibble with a little bit of the new kibble, and reduce the old kibble and increase the new until you can get rid of the old altogether. Another way to encourage your dog to eat dry food is to add either warm water, which changes the texture and increases the scent of the food, or to top the dry food with wet food, as that might be a texture your dog prefers. If this doesn’t work either, there might be an underlying reason why your dog is refusing food, and you should consult your vet.

3 Do cats sleep a lot? I'm concerned my 3 cats ( mom and her 2 adult children) are depressed or lonely? Question from mcfurries_ on Instagram

Answer: Cats spend about 66% of their lives asleep, so it’s not normally alarming to hear that your cat is often napping. However, if your cat used to be energetic and all of a sudden is lethargic, there may be an underlying health condition that you need to discuss with your vet.

I would love to talk to you about your pet’s nutrition! Please drop me an email on nutrition@petsdelight.com or direct message us on social media @PetsDelight with your questions. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

TRAINING

CORNER HOW TO HOUSE TRAIN YOUR DOG TO GO TO THE TOILET One of the most exciting days in any dog lover’s life is the day they bring their first pup home. Buying a collar, dog bed, and choosing your new furry friend's food are all elements of the fun side of being a pet parent, but on the other hand there are some more daunting aspects of pet ownership, like toilet training. It can take a few months for your dog to get settled into house training, but there are some things you can do to try and make this process as painless as possible. No one wants their pup to be going to the toilet all over the house – we get it. Understand when your dog needs the toilet

Make the most of training aids:

It’s normal that you will spend a significant amount of time watching your dog when he first arrives, this will help you recognise habits such as them sniffing the ground and circling, which are common behaviours when they need to go to the toilet. Then you can either take him outside or to a training pad so he understands where he can do his business.

Puppy pads – these are handy for the start of the training process indoors (and if your dog often has accidents). Pads like the Flamingo Puppy Pads are scented which attracts your dog to them to do their business, rather than them doing it on the floor.

Note that puppies in particular can’t hold water in their bladder for very long, so it’s a good idea to wait outside (or near your puppy pads) when you know he’s just had a drink.

How to make training as painless as possible Set routines are always best when it comes to pets. Having your dog wake up, eat, play, and exercise at around the same time everyday will lend itself to speedy house training. Having set timings will allow you to understand when your dog will likely need the toilet each day and you can prepare accordingly. 08

Pee posts – if the toilet training is starting outside, take your dog to a specific ‘pee post’ each time to get him or her used to where they are allowed to go to the toilet. Stand with them and wait until they finish, and then give them a reward such as a treat straight away so they know they have gone to the right place.

Have the F10 SC Vet Disinfectant to hand which is completely safe to use around animals, and the Greenfields Pet Stain Remover just in case.

What to do when your dog has an accident It’s inevitable that at some point your dog or puppy will have an accident, it’s all part of training, but it’s really important to act in a certain way so not to disrupt the training process. If you shout or treat them in a bad way, they will be afraid to go to the toilet, particularly in front of you, which can lead to a lot of issues down the road.

F10 SC Vet Disinfectant

Greenfields Pet Stain Remover

Scared dogs don’t learn, which is an important thing to know when doing any kind of training with your pup.

Whether you’re adopting a puppy or an older dog,

If you spot that your dog is about to go, pick him up if you can and take him outside. If he’s already started, clap your hands to interrupt and then take him out.

same. If you’re really struggling with training, it

the majority of the toilet training tactics are the might be time to get a professional trainer’s advice. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

AT WHAT AGE DOES YOUR KITTY BECOME A SENIOR CAT? Modern medicine means that our beloved cats are living longer and better lives than ever before. And with the population of senior cats on the rise, it’s important that as cat parents we learn how to care for them in their golden years. Here are some of the ways that you can take better care of your kitty as she ages At what age is your cat officially a senior cat? Vets tend to deem your cat as senior when she reaches between 7-10 years of age. Once she’s 10+ years old, you may hear her referred to as ‘geriatric’. In a nutshell, this means that her health needs special consideration.

Nutrition The right foods and the right portion sizes are important considerations for your cat’s entire life, but when she’s older the correct nutrition becomes essential for her health and wellbeing. If your cat is overweight she will be at higher risk of type 2 diabetes and arthritis. Senior cats also struggle to digest food, so feeding specialized food for senior cats is really important. We have a number of senior foods for cats:

How can you tell your cat is aging? Catching the signs of your cat aging can be really difficult. Felines hide their discomfort and disease well because when they were in the wild they were considered both predator and prey – showing signs of weakness meant they were more likely to be preyed upon. This means they do a great job at hiding their aging signs from you.

There are some signs that they can’t hide: • • • • • • • • • • •

Weight loss or gain Reduction in energy Increased sleeping Lack of interest in playing (which could signal hidden joint pain) Change in appetite Decreased vision or hearing Changes in hair coat including matting, oil, dandruff, or hair loss Changes in behavior including signs of increased anxiety or aggression Increased water consumption Urinating more Litter box issues

What are some of the best ways to care for your senior cat? The top things to be aware of when caring for a senior kitty are appropriate nutrition, exercise, pain control, and veterinary care.

Obesity and arthritis are extremely common in older cats, so keeping her moving is an important part of keeping her healthy. Toys enhanced with catnip are a good option for keeping her engaged. Hiding food around the house – preferably in high places so she needs to jump – is also a good way to keep her mind sharp and body trim.

Controlling her pain It’s not unlikely that your senior cat might be in some pain from arthritis, even if you don’t notice it yourself – as mentioned before they’re clever at hiding their pain. Working with your vet is important to ensure she is comfortable, and there are things you can do at home to help too: • Provide your cat with a heated bed as this will comfort aching joints • Switch out your litter box for one with low sides so getting in and out is easier for her Senior cats make wonderful companions, and with some care and attention, they can live well into their teens and beyond. SAM & MILO’S STORY

M

y family and I never thought we would have two lovely cats become very important parts of our lives. It all started in 2014, when we rescued Sam. He was a little kitten when we found him in our building’s parking lot. At that moment, I wasn’t sure if my parents would agree to bring a little kitten home. I looked at the little fella and just fell in love. I told myself that I had to convince my parents somehow and that I just couldn’t leave him out there in that state. After struggling for 20-30 minutes, I finally managed to get him out of the parking lot, put him a in little box and took him home with me. To my surprise, my family said ‘YES!’ the minute they saw him. At that time, I was still pursuing my studies in high school. My parents, sister and I would be out of the house most of the day and had to leave Sam alone at home. Although he was well litter trained, we had a lot of behavior problems with him. He was always moody and never liked to be touched. This prompted me to start some cat training with him. Three months had passed since

then and there were many days were I felt Sam was lonely. As much as we wanted, we couldn’t be with him all the time, which is why I decided to adopt another cat. I spoke to my parents about this and they agreed too. I was super excited and started looking for a cat to adopt. There were many cats and kittens up for adoption but one little guy caught my eye. We went to see the kitten and just fell in love. Without thinking further we decided to adopt the him and named him Milo. After bringing Milo home and introducing him to Sam, we were expecting a happy ending! To our surprise, it took us a lot of time to train Milo too. Being a little kitten, he couldn’t eat or go to the toilet himself. My sister used to wake me up around 6 am every morning so I could give Milo his morning feed. Once he was done with his feed I would train him to use the litter box and clean the mess after. He eventually learned how to eat and was litter trained too. Fast forward to today, we have the most loving cats we could have ever asked for.

chance to progress so that they can find a permanent home, which without us fostering they may not have the opportunity to do.

Do you think the challenges with stray animals in the region are getting better or worse? I don’t think the challenges with stray animals are changing, however the rescue centres do a fantastic job of taking in stray animals; they do however require a large amount of support to continue the great work they do, whether this is from donations, foster families or people adopting the rescued animals.

What advice would you give people considering fostering? Do it, give it a go! Don’t think it’s going to be easy, it isn’t, however watching the dogs grow in confidence and seeing them go from being nervous and afraid to confident, fun loving creatures makes it all so rewarding. It’s something to be proud of to know that you have been a part of making a positive change to their lives and giving them an opportunity to find a permanent home.

What are the most and least rewarding elements of fostering dogs? It is always rewarding to watch the dogs change and grow. From teaching them the basic commands of “sit” and “stay” for the less experienced dogs to playing “fetch” in the garden with the more confident dogs. Seeing them interact and play with other dogs when they are on a walk, and even teaching them to go out for a walk for the dogs that have never experience the outside world. All of this is rewarding. Obviously when you hear from K9 friends that the dog you have spent a lot of time working with and training has been homed is an incredible feeling. The least rewarding elements of fostering a dog are probably the same as for anyone who has rescued a dog themselves; it’s the mess around the house, the toys everywhere, the cleaning up of dog hair required, the holes in the garden from where the dog has decided to dig; but all of these elements are just part of the commitment to having a dog and giving them a fun, loving home.

WHY YOUR CAT MIGHT ACT STRANGELY WHEN YOU COME BACK FROM VACATION When you come back from your summer break one of the things you’ll likely be looking forward to is reuniting with your beloved cat. It’s been a while, so you’re expecting a warm reception, but that’s not quite what you receive… What happened whilst you were away? What causes this strange behaviour in cats? Cats can be extremely sensitive to change, and it’s not uncommon for them to act strangely or even aggressively when their humans return from vacation as their routine has been interrupted and so has their bond with you. Experts recommend slowly easing your cat back into their regular routine, and your company.

What causes this behaviour in cats in the first place? It’s a common belief that cats are incredibly independent and borderline aloof – but this often isn’t actually the case. Founder and director of Chargrin Falls Veterinary Center and Pet Clinic in Ohio, Carol Osborne DVM says “Feline separation anxiety is very serious. Cats are creatures of habit, and when their people leave or if they are boarded, it can be highly disruptive.” It’s not just the change in routine that can cause a cat to act out, but the new smells you’ve picked up during your travels, too. Your cat might not realise it’s you when you return home. There are some things that you can do before you leave to make the transition easier for your kitty.

Make sure you prepare your cat for the next time you leave Work with your vet If you notice signs of aggressive in your cat speak to your vet about creating a solution before you leave again. Calming sprays like the Pet Remedy Mini Calming spray or the Animology Paws & Relax spray are great options that we offer pet parents. Try your best to have your cat spend time with the pet sitter before you leave It’s common for pet parents to hire a cat sitter to check on their cat whilst they’re away. Meeting new people can be stressful for cats, so if you’re going to have a sitter step in whilst you’re away it’s a good idea to have them spend time with your cat with you first. Then ensure that your sitter continues to use the calming spray whilst following your usual routine. The nature of life in the UAE means that there will be times when you will need to be apart from your cat, so finding a way to make it comfortable for her is really important.

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP

W

e’re half way through the summer and it looks like I’m getting more used to it every year. I honestly don’t know if that is even possible but it does look like it. Or maybe it just has to do with the fact that there are more and more indoor dog friendly places nowadays. I really am happy to see this development and I can only hope that more places will follow. One of our latest discoveries is; Lowe. Lowe is a contemporary dining experience in the new KOA Canvas community. We visited them a few weeks ago and have been regular customers ever since. They have a beautiful open kitchen that really is a delight to the eye. They work with unique flavours on their menus and on top of all of that, they really do love dogs. Everybody in the team is so friendly and my dog Boefje is always getting spoiled with cuddles. They really do have a very welcoming environment and the fact that they’re allowing dogs inside is just more than amazing. But I’m also very much looking forward to spending time there with my dog in the winter. They have big plans to upgrade their terrace with al fresco seating for owners and their dogs. I also like the fact that they’re having experimental dining sessions called: Waste Not, where they minimize waste production by repurposing food scraps. All in all, a really nice place to explore with your pooch.
