NOURISH AS NATURE INTENDED Our biologically appropriate philosophy is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness, and variety of meat that dogs and cats have evolved to eat. The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is the ancestor and closest relative of all domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiarius), sharing 97% of their DNA, while the Near Eastern wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica) is the closest relative of domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus). Despite years of breeding, the internal workings and anatomical capabilities of domestic dogs and cats remain the same as their wild cousins, so it’s no surprise their food requirements remain the same too.
THE EATING ANATOMY OF CARNIVORES Just like their ancestors, modern dogs and cats have anatomical features designed for a meat-based diet – a fundamental fact often overlooked by pet food makers.
SHORT DIGESTIVE TRACT •
•
•
08
In nature, carnivores seldom eat every day; sometimes as little as once a week. That’s why they have a large single-chambered stomach suitable for gorging and digesting meat later. Because meat is easily digested (relative to plants), dogs and cats have a short, simple gastrointestinal tract (compare that to plant-eaters like cows, who have four stomach chambers and eat constantly). Carnivores have a high concentration of stomach acid to break down meat quickly and kill bacteria associated with raw meat. WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
Things you should know about shelter dogs Dogs are unconditionally loving friends, companions, and family members. Sadly, there are many misconceptions about shelter dogs. During the holy month of Ramadan, we want to give back to shelter pups in need and shed some light on some interesting facts, in the hope that you might consider adopting a shelter dog if you're looking for a furry friend to bring into your family... 1. There are many dogs needing homes Sadly, more and more dogs are needing homes. The UAE has a stray challenge, which shelters like K9 Friends try tirelessly to keep under control. 2. Puppies are waiting for loving homes too There is a common misconception that it's only older dogs that need homes. In reality, many stray dogs give birth
to puppies which are then picked up by wonderful rescuers. Pups need to reach a certain age before you can adopt them from K9 Friends, but they often have wonderful puppies waiting for their forever family. 3. Shelters dogs aren't always difficult When you adopt or foster a dog from a shelter, sometimes their history is known, and sometimes it isn't. Shelter staff can tell you what they have observed about each dog, and recommend the kind of household where they would be a good fit. Some pups have had a harder time than others, and usually these are frightened rather than aggressive (which is a common misconception). In any case, the team at the shelter can advise you on the best furry friend for your household and lifestyle. 4. The same level of training is required for a rescue dog as a dog not from a shelter We are yet to meet a pet parent that
hasn't had to put some work into training their furry friend. Usually, a bit of research and advice from fellow pet owners is enough to get you by. In other cases, you might need to take on a professional for a brief time. The same principles generally apply to shelter dogs as normal dogs. They need training and patience 5. An older dog might be the best option for your lifestyle Many pet lovers assume they want a puppy when they start their search for their furry friend. What they may not realise, is that puppies can take a lot of work. If you work long hours, have small children, or generally have a fastmoving schedule, training and looking after a puppy is going to be hard to fit in. Older dogs are often a brilliant fit for those who would love a companion but don't necessarily have the time to give a puppy the extra care, exercise, and training that they usually require. Older dogs are usually sleepy, need less walking, and are far more placid. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Extremely sick and I could not hold onto life anymore. My humans rushed me to the vet as I was in my last few minutes of life. I survived. I fought and I came back home to my humans. I LOVE THEM WITH ALL MY HEART. They named me Patchi. After the Patchi chocolate I will now let you know how I fought through it all. So, you may wonder, how I (PATCHI) a tiny little street stray kitten found my forever human family. How someone so sick and dying could end up so lucky. When I was small, my cat mama left me one day. I do not know why or what happened to her. I was sad, hungry, thirsty, and scared. In a few days’ time I met this nice big cat (who my humans called SMOKEY). Smokey took me under his wing. He taught me the basics of being a cat. How to poop and cover it and how to dig. He helped me find food. And one day he took me to meet his lovely humans who he said fed him during lockdown, every single day. I met those humans on the 10th of July 2020 (which also ended up being National Kitten Day). So, on the 10th of July 2020, after I was hand fed by my humans, I was an incredibly happy kitty. The heat and sun on the streets were unbearable, but I had my big brother Smokey with me. I was not feeling too well that evening though. I told Smokey and he took me to sleep in the shade. The next morning, I could not open my eyes. They felt like they were glued shut. I screamed loudly as I did not know why. Smokey took me back to my humans. They did not understand what had happened, so they took a warm cloth and washed my eyes and fed me, after which I was a little better. This happened on the 11th. Then on 12th, the same thing happened. My humans, Smokey and I did not know why my eyes got that way again. I was washed another time and fed just like on the 11th. My humans thought I was fine that evening and went home after playing with me. But it was getting hotter and hotter. Summer was too hot for me and in the night, I fell desperately ill. Smokey tried to get me to move to a safe place, but I just could not. I told him to carry on

I wanted to live for my humans. So to carry on with my story, when I came home after being rescued, I just slept and slept and slept. It was the first time since I was born that I could sleep in a cool place, without the fear of being attacked, without thirst and without hunger. My humans did not even sleep the first night I was home. They kept looking at me. Checking if I was breathing. They were so scared I would not make it that night. In fact my first day, I slept in a shoe box. It was the same box they put me in when they picked me up, half dead from the road. But slowly I ventured onto the sofa in the hall. And then, when I started getting better, I WAS LIKE A HURRICANE rushing from sofa to sofa. Acting mad and like how a kitten should be. With my humans, I have all the toys I could ever want and everything I could ever dream of. I still do not know how I got so lucky. So, as you see my story did have a positive end. I found my human family eventually. I am settling in well. Learning to play in boxes and bags. Chasing everything around the house and running like a crazy kitten chasing my tail .

3% New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels In All Recipes The NZ Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus), also known as the NZ Mussel, Green Shell Mussel, Kuku, and Kutai, is a bivalve mollusc in the family Mytilidae. Bivalve molluscs are recognised by their external covering that is a two-part hinged shell and the soft-bodied invertebrate inside.
Shells can be up to 260mm long, 110mm wide and 90mm deep, with bright green shells in juveniles, while wild adults are often dark purple to black; farmed adults green to yellow-brown. All NZ Green Lipped Mussels possess a distinctive green lip along the inside margin of shell, hence the name. These mussels are only found in NZ waters, and have been sustainably farmed for commercial purposes since the 1970s in the clear unpolluted waters of NZ.
dried and canned recipes. These delicacies are also a great source of iron, protein and omega-3, and the fresh meat is plump and sweet.
Benefits of using NZ Green Lipped Mussels
NZ Green Lipped Mussels are found in four main areas in NZ: Marlborough, Golden Bay/Tasman Bay, Coromandel and Stewart Island. They grow on longline technology that uses continuous crop ropes, ranging from 3,000 to 4,200 metres in length. The time from spat to harvest varies by growing area and ranges from 26 months in
NZ Green Lipped Mussels are the only species of mussel to contain a bioactive protein that acts as anti-inflammatory and helps repair muscle and increase joint function. This is why you’ll find 3% of NZ Green Lipped Mussel in all of ZIWI’s air16

Sustainability and environmental practices Green Lipped Mussels are NZ’s most iconic seafood, and are rated by the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch Programme as one of the most sustainable seafood products in the world.
the Coromandel to 48 months in Stewart Island (colder temperatures slow growth). The oceans in NZ provide perfect growing conditions and are not hindered by overpopulation, pollution, or heavy sea traffic which can damage or kill crops. Perhaps the most positive aspect of this type of farming in the environmental sense is the fact that no harmful additives are used. The only artificial or man-made components are the inert floats, ropes and anchors that provide a support for the mussels while they grow. There is no use whatsoever of fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides; in that respect mussel farming is even cleaner and greener than organic gardening.
Living with NZ Green Lipped Mussels While the mussels are growing in NZ’s blue
pristine oceans they also have another job! Known as the ecosystem engineers of the ocean, a valuable function performed by mussels is the ability to capture, clean, and process organic matter that contain bacteria and fungi from water columns. Mussels do this by extracting the nutrients and depositing remaining organic material for other marine life to consume. One mussel can filter six litres of water per hour! Mussels also provide a safe, strong shell for larvae and algae to attach to, so when mussels are present in large numbers, they can become underwater gardens that in turn attract fish to feed. Because mussels firmly anchor themselves to the crop ropes, they also act to stabilize the ocean currents, thus minimizing the effects of floods and wave action. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Let's talk nutrition... Advice from Pet's Delight

Question from @joycedxb2019 on Instagram
Question from @sabine_haddad2000 on Instagram
How do i get my cat to stay hydrated and make sure she's getting enough water during the day?
My dog loves to eat even after he finishes his food. If he sees me eat he wants to eat as well. What should i do?
Answer:
Hydration is key for cats just as it is humans, they need water to function and be happy and healthy. Cats typically aren't the easiest pets to keep hydrated, however, but there are things you can do to encourage them to get their daily intake. Water fountains If your cat refuses to drink out of a water bowl, she might prefer running water. Many kitty parents realise that their furry friend who regularly ignores her water bowl, is happy to drink from the tap when it's running. For some cats there's just something about running water that is far more appealing. We have a selection of water fountains for you to choose from, if you think this might encourage her to drink. Wet food and toppers Another way for cats to get their hydration is through wet foods. Whether it's an Applaws topper that you add to their dry food, or upping their wet food intake from once to twice a day - you can encourage them to take in more fluids. Be careful though, it's important you don't overfeed your pet - ensure that you aren't taking her over her calorie intake for the day.

Answer:
It's safe to say you're not alone. This is one of the most common behavioural pet peeves that we hear about from our customers. We often recommend putting your dog's food out at the same time you sit down to eat yours, this way, he'll be distracted by his own food. If he finishes quickly and then runs over to you, it's best not to feed him from your plate, and not really acknowledge him much at all. By doing this you're training him to learn that sitting next to the table won't result in him getting more food. If this fails, you might need to recruit a trusty dog trainer to help.
3 Question from @simamondal42 on Instagram
Can I give my dogs eggs daily?
Answer:
Eggs are packed with nutrition, making them a brilliant ingredient to have in your dog's diet. It's safe to include eggs in your dogs diet daily, however, if your dog is overweight, you might not want to overdo it. One eggs contains around 70 calories.
Encouraging your pet to eating dry food
4 Question from @emm.cat123 on Instagram
Tips and strategies, to get pets to eat food they are fussy about?
Many pets far prefer wet food over dry. Wet food is great to add some flavour to your pet's diet, but many aren't complete, which means if you feed these on their own your pet isn't getting all of the nutrition they need. Dry food is also great for dental health. If your pet refuses to eat kibble, it might be due to the texture. Adding a topper (we have some great toppers from Applaws) will change the texture of the kibble which your furball might enjoy more. Adding wet food to dry has a similar impact, and adds another flavour. If your pet is refusing to eat, it is a good idea to consult your vet to ensure there are no underlying issues.
Answer:
5
So, you've upgraded your pet's food, or picked up a new flavour, and you're super excited to treat your furry friend to this nutritional goodness you have got for them - but when you put it down, they turn their nose up at it. What's happening? Shouldn't they love this healthy food? Pets can be fussy. Cats in particular are known for their fussy ways, they love chicken today, hate it tomorrow - sound familiar? Cat parents often have a wide selection of wet food flavours to keep their kitties happy and combat this common challenge. However, what if your pet needs a specific diet and they just won't eat it? Or, you've upgraded their kibble to something more nutritious and they just want the cheap 'junk food' they've had before? Maybe your furry friend refuses to eat kibble, and will only get excited about wet food. These things happen, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with your pet or with the food choices you're making. Switching kibbles When you're changing your pets dry food it's important to do so gradually. Dog tummys in particular can be delicate to sudden change, and this can be the same with cats, although less common. Change the dry food over the course of 7-10 days, adding the new food to the old food and gradually adjusting the ratio until your pet is on the new food completely. Not only is this good for their stomachs, but it gets them used to the new flavour and texture.
Have a pet nutrition question?
Question from @a_cat_named_patchi on Instagram
Is tuna cat wet food safe as a daily diet for my kitty? Is mercury poisoning a concern?
Answer:
a) Wet food is absolutely safe to feed your cat daily, as long as you feed a dry, complete kibble too, which ensures your kitty gets all of the nutrition she needs as well as the dental benefits of kibble. b) Mercury poisoning in humans is something most of us are aware of, but as cats don't show any symptoms for this illness, it can be hard to spot. Generally, it takes much higher doses for cats to show signs of mercury poison than humans, but that doesn't mean they aren't suffering. You can guard against this by being aware of the high and low mercury fish. Sardine's, for example, are low in mercury, as is trout and salmon. Swordfish and shark fall under high mercury fish, as does certain types of tuna (bigeye, ahi). We would recommend switching up the different wet foods your feed your cat, which the majority of cat parents do anyway due to our fussy kittys. If you have any concerns about the above, then do speak to your vet.
