ANNUAL GIVING

GUARDIAN ANGELS GO THE EXTRA MILE ome of us call them caregivers, others a helping hand, but for all of us they truly are the Guardian Angel we were looking for in a time of need. Patients walk through the doors of Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) each and every day, and when someone makes that moment truly special, it deserves extra recognition. These caregivers might brighten someone’s day, calm a patient’s fears or provide an extra blanket that helps a patient sleep through the night. The Guardian Angel program was created in 2010 as a way for patients and their families to thank these special people for the outstanding care they received.

A donation to one of the Foundation’s funds of their choice in honor of their caregiver is a special way to say thank you for all they have done. These individuals are honored with a certificate and lapel pin to proudly display their accomplishment, featured on social media and other PCRMC communication, and featured in our annual Guardian Angel edition of our Foundation in Focus magazine. All of our Guardian Angels are truly fantastic, but here are a few of them with the comments shared by their grateful patients and families.

John Horrell

Mary Bruns, D.O.

“For her dedication and readiness to help! She is there for us!”

-IRIS MORELAND

Inpatient Lab Department

“John always shows a positive attitude, even on days he may not feel so great. He cheers up people around him and has a kind word for everyone. ” -ANONYMOUS

“What happy, good-spirited and competent people.” -ALBERT AND BARBARA HOBART

THE GENEROSITY OF OUR PCRMC FAMILY very year in October, employees throughout the walls of Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) come together in support of the community and the patients they serve. To say these employees care is an understatement, and in 2017 they said YES to Building a Better Us! The employees of PCRMC truly embodied the spirit of the theme of the employee giving campaign, “Building a Better Us,” and banded together to raise over $110,000 in support of the Foundation’s annual funds. With 12 funds to support, employees could direct their donation by making a one-time gift, establishing a pledge through pay roll deduct or by donating their paid time off. A total of 390 employees participated with 81 new employees establishing new pledges, totaling over $14,000! The funds most earmarked for their donations included the Greatest Needs Fund and the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, with the remainder dispersed among the Foundation’s other annual funds. At the end of the campaign, a celebration with an ice cream social was held to thank those who contributed. It included a grand prize drawing for a YETI cooler, St. Louis Blues tickets, St. Louis Arch tickets and one night hotel accommodation. On behalf of the Foundation, thank you for making this another successful employee giving campaign!

31ST ANNUAL CANCER GALA he 2017 Cancer Gala Committee held another successful Cancer Gala and raised over $188,000 for the Joy of Caring Cancer fund and the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI). The theme of the evening was My Big Fat Greek Cancer Gala, and the committee succeeded in turning the Havener Center into a Greek wedding. Attendees of the event enjoyed dinner, drinks and music from the band madBeats. In addition, attendees participated in a silent auction and a mystery trip drawing to New York City. The Joy of Caring Cancer fund provides financial assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatment. This can include prescription co-pays, nutritional supplements, wigs, mastectomy garments, cancer rehabilitation therapy and transportation while undergoing treatment. The Delbert Day Cancer Institute opened in January 2017 and accomplishes Phelps County Regional Medical Center’s (PCRMC) goal of providing all-inclusive, patientcentered care in one single, accessible location and creates a seamless transition between cancer services. Thank you for your continued support of these funds!

EVERY LIFE MATTERS ospice matters. Every life matters is what the Phelps Regional Homecare addresses when promoting the Hospice Fund and the 3rd Annual Hospice Butterfly Release Celebration. The annual event, held on May 20th, 2017 at Huffman’s Flowers of the Field Gardening Center, was a beautiful day for family, friends and co-workers to gather and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away. The Phelps Regional Homecare serves those patients who have life-limiting illnesses, and provides the care and treatment they deserve during this difficult time period. The annual event raised over $4,800 and in the past year the Hospice Fund assisted 149 patients with various needs including utilities, nutritional supplements, groceries and home and personal care items. Attendees enjoyed light snacks and refreshments before the group gathered to release the butterflies in honor of their loved ones. A special thank you to the Phelps Regional Homecare for organizing another beautiful event and thank you to our donors for supporting the Hospice Fund! 7|

SEVEN YEARS OF CUPCAKES! renna Heavin and her family dedicate over a week of their time every July to bake and deliver cupcakes in support of the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. In 2017, Brenna raised $3,582 for the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund and since the inception of the annual event in 2011, has raised over $10,000! To honor her hard work, Brenna has a space named in the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI). Brenna’s Boutique is where cancer patients receive cancer care garments and supplies after their diagnosis at the DDCI. Cupcakes for Cancer has grown every year and is now a family affair as many of Brenna’s family and friends take vacation time during the month of July to help with the baking, frosting and delivering of cupcakes. The family works out of the First Baptist Church of Rolla and has expanded flavors to include six different, flavored cupcakes and icing. The Joy of Caring Cancer Fund was originally started by Renee Joy Heavin, who battled breast cancer in the 1990s, and had a vision to provide resources for cancer patients in order to offset the worry and stress about how to pay for medical, household and family expenses during a difficult time. Thank you Brenna and the Heavin family for the hard work and dedication towards this annual commitment.

5TH ANNUAL SUPERHERO 5K he 5th Annual Superhero 5K race, held on June 10, 2017 at Veteran’s Memorial Park was a family affair as over 220 runners and walkers of all ages participated in this fun event in support of the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. The annual fund of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) provides financial support for cancer patients who may have difficulty managing their daily activities and challenges that are experienced from their cancer diagnosis. In 2017, 87 patients were assisted through the fund. The City of Rolla Fire and Rescue held an opening ceremony for all participants and onlookers, and after the race participants received medals for top finishers in their age divisions. The event included inflatable bounce houses, a superhero skit by Drama Force Productions and shaved ice. On behalf of the Foundation, thank you to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center Marketing Department for organizing this fun, family event and to all our supporters, sponsors and donors! ANNUAL GIVING

DAISY AWARD he Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) is proud to be a part of the DAISY Award at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). We know the importance of our nurses, the roles they play and the impact they have on the lives of the patients at PCRMC. Nurses change lives daily and often work long hours all while providing patients with a smile and a hug. The DAISY Award is an international program to recognize the outstanding role models we have here in our nursing community. Recipients are celebrated for their demonstrated dedication to excellence and

compassionate care. All honorees are nominated by their patients or peers for their extraordinary clinical skill and compassion and award recipients are recognized with a celebratory ceremony. This award is made possible by funding to the Foundation from the family of Vicki B. Allen, R.N. who faithfully served the nursing profession and PCRMC for 40 years, and donations to the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund. In 2017, we honored 11 nurses with this special recognition.

DONOR APPRECIATION EVENT

very year donors, sponsors, supporters and friends of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) gather for an evening of recognition and gratitude for their support of the Foundation and Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). On Thursday, September 21, 2017, attendees assembled in the beautiful Courtyard Garden of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI) to enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, refreshments from St. James Winery and Public House Brewery and music from the band Trilogy. In addition, each of the 12 fund administrators were present inside the Shirley Day Conference Center of the DDCI, where attendees could visit and meet with the fund administrators to get a first-hand account of how their philanthropic dollars have impacted so many of the lives in our community. All fund administrators are clinical staff at PCRMC and understand the needs of their patients and can determine the care and assistance each one needs in their circumstance.

ANNUAL GIVING

BELL OF HOPE UNVEILING t was an exciting year for cancer services and the opening of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI) in January, but an inspiring new opportunity for patients was unveiled on August 31, 2017. Two new brass Bells of Hope were unveiled in a dedication ceremony at the Delbert Day Cancer Institute at PCRMC. The brass bells read the following on their plaques, “Ring this bell, three times well, its toll to clearly say, my treatment’s done, this course is run, and I am on my way.” After completing their treatment at the DDCI, cancer patients will ring these bells to celebrate and rejoice in their victory against cancer. The Bells of Hope will enhance the overall patient experience of the DDCI and provide hope and inspiration to patients throughout their treatment, in addition to motivating their caregivers to continuously provide encouragement during their time at the cancer institute. Individuals and organizations have the opportunity to sponsor the bells and be featured for the entire year and to dedicate the bell(s) in honor of a loved one touched by cancer. In 2017, Mo-Sci Corporation graciously sponsored the bells as part of the 19th Annual Golf Tournament and dedicated the bells to Karen Davis and Lana Van Doren. Both ladies battled cancer and were

the first to ring the bells named in their honor after the unveiling ceremony from Ted and Kim Day of Mo-Sci Corporation. Since the inception of the Bells of Hope, over 120 patients rang the bell between August and the end of the year. The Bells of Hope will be a symbol for patients while undergoing cancer treatment at the DDCI and provide an opportunity for them to celebrate their struggles and triumphs. Thank you to Mo-Sci Corporation for making this experience possible for our patients!

In total, the spinoff event raised over $2,600 for the DDCI! The tournament is a day-long event that includes teams divided into morning and afternoon sessions. After each session, participants enjoyed the awards ceremony, the opportunity to win prizes and a meal in the Oak Meadow Country Club dining room. ypass surgery or congestive heart failure are never words a patient wants to hear after a doctor’s visit. To complicate things even more, recovery can often lead to months of rehabilitation and additional visits to the doctor. When a cardiac patient has large co-pays or a lack of insurance altogether, it can create a heavy burden for our community members.

With the support of the Heart-2-Heart fund, Betty received the rehabilitation she needed. The annual fund allow patients in our community to receive the care they need, improve the quality of life and provide the care they need that otherwise might not be available.

Betty Pendley was left with such medical bills and large co-pays after she received a stent and was recommended to complete rehabilitation three times per week for 13 weeks at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. Although she needed the rehabilitation to strengthen her heart, she could not afford the number of recommended sessions. When Betty found out about the Heart-2-Heart fund and how it helps cardiac patients just like her with copays, medical bills and treatments, she was relieved the Foundation could help.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do all of the rehab sessions if it was not for the help of the Heart-2-Heart fund,” says Betty. PHELPS REGIONAL HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION
