As we move into

this holiday season, we have so much we are grateful for here at the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation). We truly cannot say thank you enough for the generosity you have shown throughout the year, and we are grateful for our many donors and supporters. Without your support, we would not have been able to transform the lives of so many of your family, friends, and neighbors. To celebrate you and your generous support throughout the year, the Foundation held a special evening of appreciation on September 21st in the beautiful Courtyard Garden of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute. This special night provided the opportunity for donors to meet the new providers of Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) and learn more from fund administrators on how your gifts have helped patients and families at PCRMC. We are so appreciative of our donors for helping us change lives right here within our communities. This edition of the magazine highlights one individual, Betty Pendley, who was able to continue with her 13 weeks of cardiac rehabilitation at PCRMC thanks to the Heart-2Heart Fund. Now, Betty is paying that forward and supporting the Foundation by giving back to ensure others are able to have the care they need during a difficult time. Over the course of the year, many of our friends came together and supported us through philanthropic events. Recently in October, we had many events support our Breast Center Mammography Fund and raised gifts through everything from awareness marches to selling donuts. October was also our annual employee giving campaign, where we continued to focus on “Building a Better US,” and a total of 390 employees pledged support for the campaign. As we look forward to next year, we have so much to be thankful for at the Foundation and PCRMC. We are appreciative of our donors, supporters, and friends within our communities. On behalf of the Foundation and Board of Directors, we wish you Happy Holidays and a happy, healthy New Year!

“We truly cannot say thank you enough for the generosity you have shown throughout the year.”

Sincerely,

Lorrie Hartley Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Executive Director Foundation in Focus 3

“There is no greater act of kindness than helping someone else who is in need,” she says. “I want others to know how fantastic the Foundation is, and to encourage them to give, if they are able. PAYING IT FORWARD By: Somer Overshon & Shelby O'Keefe

I

n February 2014, Betty Pendley was at a doctor’s appointment at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) when she learned she urgently needed a heart stent. She was airlifted to SSM Health St. Clare Hospital – Fenton and remained in the Intensive Care Unit for several days. Along with the physical strain of having a serious health scare, Betty was also dealing with the financial toll of her medical bills: her copay for the stent placement was $3,000 and she had large medical bills stemming from previous cardiac problems. A year earlier, Betty had to have a stent, but the artery in her heart was so small that the first stent tore. Dr. James Spadaro, interventional cardiologist at the PCRMC Heart and Vascular Center, placed the second stent and recommended Betty complete rehabilitation three times per week for 13 weeks at PCRMC Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. PREVIOUS HEART TROUBLE

Betty’s heart troubles were not a new occurrence due to a triple bypass surgery in April of 2012 while still living in Florida with her husband. After her surgery, she was in the hospital for three weeks in order to regain the ability to walk, but was concerned the whole time for her husband’s safety, whom she cared for due to his dementia. After her surgery and recovery, Betty and her husband moved back to Missouri to be closer to their children and to move her husband into the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James. After her husband passed away, she decided to stay in St. James since her daughter lives close and she has other children in the Missouri area.

ANOTHER ROUND OF REHABILITATION Betty says the thought of having cardiac rehabilitation three times per week for a little over three months was daunting, and she panicked because she did not know how she was going to pay for it. “I called the insurance company to see what it was going to cost, and they told me approximately a $50 copay per visit,” she says. Although Betty desperately needed cardiac rehab to strengthen her heart, she knew she couldn’t afford it. Since she was not aware of any financial options, Betty knew she could not complete the recommended number of rehab sessions. “I just told them I couldn’t do it,” she says. Ultimately, Betty decided to complete only the cardiac rehabilitation sessions she could afford. “When I started at the PCRMC Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, I spoke to Helen Thomure about the cost of the sessions and how I would not be able to afford to do all of the treatments,” Betty says. “Helen told me about the Heart-2-Heart Fund and told me she would reach out to see if the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) could help.” When she received word her sessions would be covered through the generous donations to the Heart-2-Heart Fund, Betty was overjoyed and relieved. “It was a great feeling to have the security of knowing I could get the treatments I needed and not have to worry about how I was going to pay for them,” Betty says.

Foundation in Focus 5

Betty Pendley worked with Helen Thomure, Respiratory Therapist, in the PCRMC Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.

“It was truly wonderful and a miracle for me. I wouldn’t have been able to do all of the rehab sessions if it was not for the help I received from the Heart-2-Heart Fund. I was so happy!″ During her rehab sessions, Betty had to complete warmup exercises, workout on the treadmill and bicycle, and use a grinder, which worked her arms. All of these exercises were designed to help strengthen her heart muscles after her stent placement. “I enjoyed the classes,” Betty says. “Some of them were hard, but they all helped me to feel better and stronger. The staff in the cardiac rehab center is wonderful; they are all so helpful and kind. Helen, especially, made the experience easier for me.” She thought so much of the staff that even after Betty completed her 13-week sessions, she went back and visited them several times. She even brought her therapy dog with her to visit with everyone, as well.

Betty decided she also wanted to give back. Now, she tries to pay it forward by donating a little at a time to the Foundation. “The Foundation is an amazing organization that truly helps so many people. It is a blessing for patients and their families,” she says. “I knew I wanted to help other people the same way I was helped by paying it forward, and that’s what I am trying to do. I send the Foundation a check two to three times a year, and even though it will take me a while to pay it back, I am still trying, because I know how important it is to give to others.” Betty is appreciative for the great staff and care at PCRMC as well as the assistance she received from the people who donated to the Foundation. “There are so many wonderful donors, which makes what the Foundation does truly amazing. People are so generous and help people they have never met. There is no greater act of kindness than helping someone else who is in need,” she says. “I want others to know how fantastic the Foundation is, and to encourage them to give, if they are able. The donations to the Foundation are changing lives for the better.”

GIVING BACK Betty’s first interaction with the Foundation was from the assistance she received from the Heart-2-Heart Fund, and she did not realize all of the funds the Foundation has to help local people in need. After her positive experience, Foundation in Focus 6

OCTOBER IS OFTEN A MONTH ASSOCIATED WITH PROMOTING breast cancer awareness and raising funds for organizations connected to the cause. This year was no different, and many compassionate donors and supporters organized events to fundraise for the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation’s Breast Center Mammography Fund. Several events throughout the month supported the cause, from the 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness March to the annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest. We are grateful for the support within our communities and the efforts supporting this fund!

CATCH THE Signs EARLY Common Heart Attack Warning Signs

Don’t wait to get help if you experience any of these heart attack warning signs. Although some heart attacks are sudden and intense, most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Pay attention to your body — and call 911 if you feel any of the symptoms listed on the right.

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

SYMPTOMS VARY BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. ACT FAST AND CALL 911! Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, have it checked out. Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don't wait — call 911 or your emergency response number. Information taken from the American Heart Association. For more information, please visit heart.org/heartattack.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.

Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

CELEBRATING A MONTH OF GIVING! THE RESULTS ARE IN! The employees of Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) showed their dedication to the hospital by once again supporting the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation’s annual employee giving campaign. Every day, our employees contribute their hard work and commitment to the patients and mission of our hospital. During the month of October, PCRMC employees took it further and said YES to “Building a Better Us.” Our campaign this year is an opportunity to show that we are all in this together, and only together can we continue building upon the core values of our organization and help those within the communities we serve. Employees were challenged to make a contribution to the fund(s) of their choice by giving a one-time gift or establishing a pledge through payroll deduction over the course of the next year. The overwhelming response of support shows philanthropy is in the hearts of the employees here at PCRMC. Over the course of our campaign, 390 employee donors pledged an overwhelming total of $110,147.08. Furthermore, the average gift was $203.04, which is up from 2016, and we had 81 new employee donors contribute to the campaign this year. We could not do it without all the support of our generous employees and thank you for another successful campaign.

BRENNA HEAVIN IS ONE DETERMINED YOUNG lady who is always willing to put in the hard work and effort it takes to make something truly special. This year, Brenna once again set a new record for cupcakes baked and continues to make Cupcakes for Cancer a special week within our community.

Top: Brenna sets a new goal each year for cupcakes baked and every year meets and exceeds her goal! Middle: Brenna and her volunteers bake, frost, and carefully pack each individual cupcake for their customers. Bottom: Brenna delivering cupcakes to an excited PCRMC employee. She delivers cupcakes to individuals throughout the city of Rolla and beyond.

Cupcakes for Cancer started in 2011 when Brenna decided she wanted to help those in need, and decided to bake cupcakes to support the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund at the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. The Joy of Caring Cancer Fund was started by Renee Joy Heavin, who battled breast cancer in the 1990s, and the fund helps cancer patients in need to offset the worry and stress about how to pay for medical, household, and family expenses during a difficult time. This year Brenna and her family set up their baking operation at First Baptist Church of Rolla and now customers can choose from six different, flavored cupcakes with several choices for icing. In total this year, Brenna raised $3,582 for the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. Congratulations to Brenna on another year of successful cupcake baking! In addition, to honor Brenna and her hard work of raising over $10,000 cumulatively, Brenna has a place named in her honor at the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI). Brenna’s Boutique is where cancer patients receive cancer care garments and supplies after their diagnosis at the DDCI. We cannot thank Brenna, the Heavin family, and supporters enough for their generous gifts of time, hard work, and donations to help those in need in our communities.

THE TWO NEW BRASS BELLS OF HOPE WERE unveiled during a dedication ceremony held on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI). The bells read the following: “Ring this bell, three times well, its toll to clearly say, my treatment’s done, this course is run, and I am on my way.” Cancer patients completing their treatment at the DDCI will ring these bells to celebrate and rejoice in their victory against cancer. The bells will enhance the overall patient experience by providing hope and inspiration and motivating their caregivers to continuously provide encouragement throughout the course of treatment. Each year an organization or individual will have the opportunity to sponsor the bells. They will be featured throughout the year and have the choice to dedicate the bell(s) in honor of a loved

one touched by cancer. Mo-Sci Corporation generously sponsored both bells this year as part of the 19th Annual Golf Tournament and dedicated both bells to local cancer survivors. The bell located in Radiation Oncology is dedicated to Karen Davis, and the bell located in Medical Oncology is dedicated to Lana Van Doren. Both ladies battled cancer and were the first to ring the bells dedicated in their honor, after the unveiling of the bells by Ted and Kim Day, of MoSci Corporation. We are grateful for our donors sponsoring the bells and providing an opportunity for cancer patients to celebrate their struggles and triumphs. For more information about the Bell of Hope sponsorship and the 20th Annual Golf Tournament, please contact Cameron Hance at 573-458-7699 or chance@pcrmc.com.

2017 Donor Appreciation Reception and "Meet & Greet"

THE 2017 DONOR APPRECIATION RECEPTION TOOK place in the beautiful Courtyard Garden at the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI) on Thursday, September 21st. It was an evening of thanks and celebration, as the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) celebrated the individuals and organizations who support the Foundation. As a drop-in event, attendees were treated to heavy hors d'oeuvres, refreshments from St. James Winery and Public House Brewing Company, and music from local band Trilogy. In addition, Fund Administrators were present inside of the Shirley Day Conference Center at the DDCI, where attendees could stop and visit with them to get a firsthand account of how their philanthropic dollars have impacted so many lives in our community. The Fund Administrators are clinical employees at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) who understand the patient’s needs, and can best determine how to assist them. PCRMC welcomed many new providers over the course of the past year, each of whom brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to their area of practice at the hospital. Attendees of the Donor Appreciation Reception were some of the first to “meet & greet” the new providers. The evening provided an opportunity for providers to connect with community members and donors alike. The evening included brief remarks from Ted Day, Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Board President, who on behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, expressed his sincere thanks for their support. In addition, attendees heard from Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Somer Overshon, who recognized the new providers and their specialties. From all of us at the Foundation, we extend our gratitude for the past year of philanthropy and are so grateful for all of our donors, supporters, and friends!

VICKIE DIXON What was your first impression of Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? I thought it was wonderful to have an organization to assist Phelps County Medical Center (PCRMC) to help fund new state-of-the-art equipment and help provide patients assistance for the services offered at the hospital. What has surprised you most about the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? I recently had the opportunity to work with the Foundation staff on the Delbert Day Cancer Institute project and what impressed me the most was how caring and protective the staff are of the donors. They work extremely hard to satisfy the donor’s wishes and protect their privacy, and yet put the funds to the absolute best use. What do you tell others about the Foundation? How do you describe this organization to others? I explain that it is a great way to help other people. The Foundation has many different funds and if you have a specific interest in helping someone in cancer care, pediatrics with dental issues, or know someone who has gone through breast cancer, you can put your donations into that specific fund and help that particular program. However you give, you can help someone in that particular interest area.

I would tell them to give what they could afford. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but just donate what you can because every little bit helps.

Vickie Dixon outside her art studio in St. James, MO.

What interests you most about the Foundation? Why? My favorite fund of the Foundation is the Greatest Needs Fund, because it helps provide capital funds that enhance the hospital’s ability to treat patients and also help patients in need that aren’t covered by another fund. When you have a medical crisis, things come up that you don’t always expect, such as being able to pay the house payment or pay the electric bill, and that is where the Greatest Needs Fund can help. What would you tell someone who is thinking about donating or volunteering their time? I would tell them to give what they could afford. Find a fund or need that strikes close to your heart and donate to that cause. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but just donate what you can because every little bit helps. What's it like to be a donor of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? Donating to the Foundation is giving back to my place of employment. PCRMC has employed me for 39 years and I very much appreciate that, so to give back to the Foundation is a way of saying thank you. The Foundation does a wonderful job of recognizing their donors. It doesn’t matter if it is a lot or a little, but you are always thanked for your donation.
