Often times,

the people who deserve recognition for their hard work fly under the radar. They accomplish small, but still life-changing things on a daily basis and yet so often their work goes unrecognized. The Guardian Angel Program strives to offer an avenue for people to recognize those hard-working individuals who go above and beyond to offer the best care. While so often these people are caregivers in a clinical environment, sometimes the caregiver is someone who is not in a clinical setting. Nothing captures this better than the story of Steve Pantaleo and his impact on people like Mary Ann O’Connor and her brother, John. John struggled with diabetes, but when Mary Ann convinced her brother to see Steve, who helped him navigate the confusing road toward getting health insurance, his life changed dramatically. Steve’s compassion and drive to help people made such an impact on John he now not only regularly sees Steve for help, but he also has referred many people to Steve for his services at Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Our Guardian Angel Program is one of the many ways you can support the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation and aid in our philanthropic mission. This month’s Donor Profile is of Keri Brookshire-Heavin, who shares why she feels so strongly driven to philanthropy. There is always something new happening in the Foundation. Our community continues to support us through many philanthropic events. Most recently, the 3rd Annual Hospice Butterfly Release Celebration took place on May 20th, which provides a time for friends, family and employees to come together to celebrate the memories of those who have passed. The 5th Annual Superhero 5K will be on June 10th, and Cupcakes for Cancer takes place in July. Both of these fundraisers’ proceeds benefit the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. There are many ways to participate in the Foundation’s philanthropic mission, but in the end, it all comes back to patients. Our Guardian Angels are a shining example of what it means to truly care for people, and we are proud to honor them in this issue.

“Our Guardian Angels are a shining example of what it means to truly care for people.”

Sincerely,

Ted Day Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Board President Foundation in Focus 3

ITHOUT YOU, THE BABY STEPS FUND COULD not have provided a funeral service for a grieving mother and her stillborn baby. Last fall, she gave birth to twins, and one baby was stillborn. She desperately wanted a funeral service for her baby, but could not afford the cost. The Baby Steps Fund provided for a funeral and a casket.

“The Baby Steps Fund is great because it’s those times that you want to be able to help people and assist them. It is a difficult time, but being able to alleviate some of that and knowing how grateful the mothers are is worth it,” said Angela Christesen-Parker, fund administrator of the Baby Steps Fund and Director of Maternal Child Services Obstetrics/Nursery/Pediatrics. In other circumstances, such as when a patient at PCRMC has a fetal loss, the Baby Steps Fund steps in to help families with comfort and tangible reminders of their baby. A memory box is created for the family, which consists of pictures of the baby for a photo album, foot and handprints of the baby and a two-part necklace where one part stays with the mother and the other stays with the baby.

mothers and babies. Many mothers have to return to work or school, and a breast pump is crucial to successful nursing. Last year, a single mother had to return to work and was unable to afford a nursing bra and breast pump. The Baby Steps Fund purchased these items for her, which allowed her to pump when she returned to work. In addition, the Baby Steps Fund assists in covering transportation costs for parents whose infants are transferred to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Baby Steps Fund is responsible for helping many families during a time of tragedy, such as fetal demise or infants transferred to outside hospitals. It also assists many new mothers who need support and help with nursing supplies and education. Without your support of the Baby Steps Fund, we would not be able to assist those mothers in need in our community. For more information about donating to the Baby Steps Fund, please contact the Foundation at chance@pcrmc.com or 573-458-7699.

We do not want any mom to leave the hospital with empty arms. –Angela Christesen The Baby Steps Fund also assists nursing mothers with lactation support and education, breast pumps, nursing bras and supplies to make breastfeeding a success for The Baby Steps Fund was able to support Isabella’s family and provide cherished photographs to capture their love for their daughter.

ometimes a Guardian Angel is someone other than “When she left, I didn’t have anywhere to go. She had a doctor or a nurse, and instead is a person willing been my [provider] forever, and I didn’t really have any to go the extra mile for a patient. In the case interest to go to any other [provider],” said John. of John Copeland and his sister, Mary Ann O’Connor, Months later when Mary Ann saw John at Christmas, she Steve Pantaleo was that person. Mary Ann recognized started quizzing him on his blood sugar levels, and he Steve as a Guardian Angel through the Phelps Regional had no idea what they were. Health Care Foundation after he made the often difficult process of healthcare insurance simple enough for “I ran out of test strips. I hadn’t been them to understand. For the first time, Steve made the process of navigating healthcare insurance manageable checking it [blood sugars], and it is probably where it was before I went to for John. He was able to guide him through this confusing process after John had given up trying to find Columbia. I am sure it is out of control,” a solution.

he said.

In 2007, John spent a month in Columbia with Mary Ann was insistent for him to see a doctor. John necrotizing fasciitis (a bacterial skin infection) related had no test strips, no medications and no way to get to a fall. This complication, along with diabetes, led to them filled. a long stay at the hospital. Mary Ann was concerned for the health of her brother, who had no insurance. “He wasn’t doing any more than he had to at the time,” After the incident, he found a provider at Phelps said Mary Ann. “All of his prescriptions had run out, and County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC), and was it had been over a year without them. I asked him if he able to start on medications again to stabilize his had looked into the Affordable Care Act, and he just sugars and regain control of his health. told me it cost too much money, but I wanted more information on it.” When his provider retired in early 2015, John struggled to find a new provider and still had no insurance plan. Mary Ann started looking into the Affordable Care Act She had helped minimize his payments since he was herself and could not make any sense of the program on private pay. When he contacted some of the PCRMC either. After hearing a radio ad from the PCRMC clinics, he was told he would have to establish with a Consumer Assistance-EnrollU Department, who help new physician. people find the right healthcare insurance program, she immediately emailed them and was referred to Steve Pantaleo, Certified Application Counselor/Navigator.

“I called Steve and explained to him the situation and “I work with over 70 people and there were about 20-25 how my brother gets frustrated with the medical arena people who I referred to Steve,” said John. “I told them, and asked if we could make an appointment,” said Mary that he would help them, and all you have to do is go Ann. “I wanted to see if we could just talk to him. I told talk to him. He is not only good at what he does, but he him how my brother felt it will be too expensive and that is a good person to talk to. Rather than jump right in, he he would not be able to get any insurance. Steve told gave me the time to get to know him. We had some stuff me to bring him over, and we would sit down and just in common, and that made it easier, so I didn’t even start from square one.” think twice. He is just a great guy and has helped a lot of people.” When Mary Ann and John met with Steve, he explained the process thoroughly from the very beginning, so Mary Ann decided to recognize Steve as a Guardian both of them could understand the principles behind Angel since she knew the recognition was visible and the Affordable Care Act. After a while, Mary Ann had a would have a lasting effect. She made a contribution meeting to go to and left John with Steve to continue to the Greatest Needs Fund, knowing it could help the process. someone in a similar situation as her brother. John initially did not want to go through the process of figuring out the Affordable Care Act or other insurance plans, after the difficulties of trying previously.

“The Guardian Angel Program gave me an avenue for rewarding someone and do something good for another cause, too,” she said.

“When we went to talk to Steve, I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to go at all. I just went because of Mary Ann. I went and listened and after she left, we started talking and he started showing me this and that about all of my options. The more we talked, the more he would start talking, about something he did in the military or just get completely off topic with what we were doing. We just started being friendly, and he was very engaging. If he had been anything but what he was, I would have left. He was insistent on showing stuff to me and pointing out what was right and wrong,” said John. “He was all about showing me everything and explained it to me.”

“In my eyes, Steve has been just as important, if not more important, to me living than any of the doctors here. It takes a whole village to make it work. It’s not just the doctors the surgeons or the nurse in charge. It takes everybody to make it work. If he wasn’t here, then I probably wouldn’t be here. I probably wouldn’t have gone to anyone else,” said John.

After Steve signed John up for an insurance plan that fit his needs, John established care at PCRMC with Dr. Jennifer O’Malley, and he was able to start on his diabetic medications again. This allowed him to get his blood sugar levels under control and lose over 100 pounds of the weight he had gained when his diabetes was out of control. Several months later, Mary Ann received a text from him asking for Steve’s contact information, since he knew several people who needed help and he wanted to refer them to Steve.

“That was the point when I said, WOW,” said Mary Ann. “That is above and beyond, and that’s when I decided to recognize him for a Guardian Angel, because if my brother thought so much of Steve to refer him to someone else, then that speaks volumes.” Foundation in Focus 16

Due to his friendly personality and wealth of knowledge, Steve Pantaleo made the process of understanding John’s insurance options easy and less intimidating and was able to find the best healthcare plan for him. He now has insurance and can get routine visits so his health does not get out of control again. All of his medications are updated and his blood sugar levels are stabilized. Overall, Steve’s personable and friendly nature made Mary Ann and John both feel comfortable and confident in John’s healthcare decisions.

Foundation in Focus 17

Keri Brookshire-Heavin Tell me how you first got involved with the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? I first got involved as a donor as an employee, and then later I got involved on the board after I became the Chief Nursing Officer. I have been with the hospital since 2005 and became a donor a year or two after I started at the hospital. What made you first start donating to the Foundation? I did it because the option was there, and you could give any amount. I gave a little of my paycheck every month, but since I have really learned about the Foundation and what the funds do, I have become very passionate about donating. What was your first impression of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? Once I really started to get to know what the Foundation does, I was very impressed about the opportunities they have had to help people and what the funds do, like the Abbie Darnell Fund, the Greatest Needs Fund and the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund, for which I am the fund administrator. It is really all about helping people in the long run, and not everyone realizes it. Once they do, they get behind the Foundation and giving. What do you find most challenging about the mission? I think the most challenging is being the best steward of the money given to the funds at the Foundation. I am always very aware of how those funds are used because I am using people’s gifts and their hard-earned money. I want to make sure I use it in a way that is the most effective. Whatever the intention of that fund is, I want to make sure it is the most effective for that intention. It’s a challenge because I take it really seriously, and it is a big responsibility.

What do you wish other people knew about the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? I would want them to know all of the good work the Foundation does. They see all the big projects, like the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI) for example, but they don’t really see the Baby Steps Fund. They don’t see the mother who we helped pay for funeral expenses for a baby she lost when she couldn’t afford it. Those stories which really make a huge impact, people really don’t see. They do not realize all the extent of what the Foundation does, or we would have even more donors. The interest in the Foundation seems to be growing. Why do you think that is? When you have big accomplishments like the DDCI, I think that really gets the Foundation out in the public. It would really be great for our employees to be the spokespeople in the community. For someone who can’t give a lot and feels their money will not make a difference—it does. When you think about the fact that it could help a patient with medications or nutritional supplements people start to get a little more personal and realize it’s about people. It’s not about big structures. It’s not about the building of the DDCI. It is about the people helped there. I think getting that message out is what is going to grow the Foundation. What would you tell someone who is thinking about (donating, volunteering, etc.)? The reward you get for donating time and money, and not just to the Foundation but in any way, is not something that is measurable. Sometimes you do not even know the impact, but I always feel a great level of comfort that the donation that I send to the Foundation, even if I do not know how it is used, is helping somebody. That is a good feeling.
