In healthcare
there are a lot of stressful situations and often the people who deserve the recognition for the extra care and comfort provided to patients can go unrecognized. These individuals strive to make the atmosphere for patients here at Phelps County Regional Medical Center a meaningful and positive experience. The Guardian Angel program is an avenue for patients, colleagues, and friends to recognize those caring individuals who continue to go out of their way to provide our patients with the best care possible. While so often these people are caregivers in a clinical environment, sometimes it can be a friendly face opening a door or extra help filling out paperwork prior to an appointment. This edition features the story of Marian Musumhiri and the care she received from Dr. Hadi Bhurgri. Marian was at a loss when no one could diagnose her ailments. She was grateful to Dr. Bhurgri for having an open mind, and taking care of her as a patient and not just a disease, which led to discovering the cause of her symptoms. Now, Marian has a treatment plan to manage her disease and a new outlook on life. Our Guardian Angel Program is one of the many ways you can support the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation and our philanthropic mission. This month’s Donor Profile is of Dr. Jeffery Kerr, who shares why he strongly supports the Foundation’s mission and the Guardian Angel program. The Foundation has many exciting giving opportunities over the next several months
and we are thankful for our community, which organizes many philanthropic events on behalf of the Foundation. On May 19th, the 4th Annual Hospice Butterfly Release Celebration took place and was a time to reflect on the memories of those who have passed. Our 20th Annual Golf Tournament took place on June 4th, and we are grateful for the support of our sponsors, donors, participants, and volunteers for making this another special year for supporting the Delbert Day Cancer Institute. There are many exciting changes on the horizon for the Foundation, and we are happy to introduce our new Foundation Board members. Joy Tucker is a longstanding Phelps County resident, and was the superintendent of the St. James R-1 School district for 20 years. Dr. Ron Wilkerson owns St. James Dental Center in St. James, MO where he helps residents of Phelps County every day with their dental needs. Both board members are very engaged in the community and we are grateful for their support!
“We are proud of
the Foundation’s philanthropic mission, but in the end, it all comes back to serving our communities. ”
We are proud of the Foundation’s philanthropic mission, but in the end, it all comes back to serving our communities. The Guardian Angels here are truly the example of caring for people and we are honored to highlight them for going above and beyond! Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher Spencer Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Foundation Board President Foundation in Focus 3

A New Direction for a Diagnosis
I
t has been a long road to a diagnosis and treatment plan for Marian Musumhiri, but after visiting Dr. Hadi Bhurgri, Gastroenterologist at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC), she now has a name and course of action for what has ailed her the past two years. Grateful for the care, Marian decided to recognize Dr. Bhurgri through the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Foundation) Guardian Angel program after the care he provided resulted in an answer. The Guardian Angel program provides an opportunity for grateful patients to recognize their caregivers who have gone above and beyond during their time at PCRMC. In May of 2016, Marian went to the Emergency Department (ED) for elevated LFT levels (liver function test), which were well over the limit for a normal reading. The ED tested her for hepatitis, but her results were negative. After her visit, Marian attended her follow-up appointments, but the only conclusion for her elevated LFT levels was the possibility of hepatitis that had laid dormant. She was feeling better, but was scared at the possibility of hepatitis, and still had no concrete answers. At that point, she decided to forgo any further follow-ups. Several months later, in April of 2017,
Foundation in Focus 16
her levels raised again, and she could no longer ignore the progression of her symptoms.
“My eyes were yellow, my skin was yellow, and I was bruising extremely easily that I knew I had to get it taken care of at that point, said Marian. Due to her history of elevated levels and previous trip to the Emergency Department, she was tested for hepatitis, and again tested negative. This time she was referred to a gastroenterologist in Columbia, MO since at the time PCRMC did not have one on staff. When Marian saw her gastroenterologist in Columbia, he performed the same tests, and she tested negative for hepatitis. Her doctor’s concern was the possibility of auto immune hepatitis, which is when the immune system attacks the organs. Her fear with the diagnosis was the recommended treatment of long-term steroid use. In order to be certain of the diagnosis, a liver biopsy was conducted and the results were negative, and in fact showed her liver
was in good condition. Marian’s gastroenterologist had several other ideas of what her diagnosis was, but they were not lining up for her symptoms. The decision was made to monitor her levels every few months and return to Columbia to repeat the same tests again. At that point she was tired of the tests, constant travel, and no answers for why her LFT levels were elevated.
“I was exhausted. I am a single mother, and I was driving myself to and from these appointments. I was just tired and done. I am willing to work to get my health better, but I was not getting any results or answers and I felt I might as well not do the trip and watch it myself. That is where I was at that point.”
outlined in my initial visit. It could be a number of things, but once we could put a name to it, then we could treat it.” After Marian’s final diagnosis, Dr. Bhurgri prescribed her a medication for her PBC to manage the disease. The medication is commonly prescribed to treat a number of diseases, and within two months when she returned for testing, her LFT levels had returned to normal.
“I felt really excited that he took the time to look at the opposite end of the spectrum,” said Marian. “I felt like he was actually listening to what I was saying. He really paid attention to me. I feel like I am back to normal.”
A NEW DIRECTION Marian’s disease was caught in the very early stages and When Marian had her yearly physical in December 2017, is something that cannot be cured. It is a condition which her bloodwork showed her LFT levels were still elevated. she will have to manage through medication for the rest of She received a recommendation from her provider, Emily her life, but she has a new outlook. Wiseman, FNP, to see the new gastroenterologist at PCRMC, Dr. Hadi Bhurgri. Since he was local, Marian decided to “It is a condition where I can function as long as I stay make an appointment and follow through with the referral. on my medication, eat healthy, and exercise. The fact that I have a name and a management plan is what is so “I did not have any expectations, other than I was just there exciting. Before, I felt like everyone was trying to diagnosis to manage my levels. That was my assumption going into it,” a certain type of disease, but with Dr. Bhurgri it was more said Marian. “I had managed to get all of my tests released [individualized]. He didn’t put me in a bucket, but he was and after talking with him I realized he had read all of them. really trying to look at me and my situation, and that is He then floored me because instead of ordering all the what was amazing about it.” tests I had already done, he ordered 15 tests for one blood draw. My interest was piqued and I realized that we were She still requires further treatment and will need to not going to go through all of what I had done already.” undergo another liver biopsy, but she is confident in Dr. Bhurgri’s ability and grateful for the care she has received. When Marian returned for her follow-up, Dr. Bhurgri informed her they finally had a diagnosis of Primary Biliary “I completely trust him, and I am to the Cholangitis (PBC). PBC is a rare autoimmune disease that causes progressive destruction of the bile ducts and can point where I will do whatever the plan cause liver damage that may eventually lead to cirrhosis. “I was so happy to finally have a name for my condition. The past year I had this mentality that I was dead, I was dying, and no one knows the cause. All of a sudden I had an answer,” said Marian. “That was one of the first goals we
is for me. I am so grateful to Dr. Bhurgri for being open-minded and taking care of me as his patient, not a disease.”

Jeffery Kerr, D.O.
Dr. Kerr stands next to the portrait of Jay Crump, D.O. in the Emergency Department Waiting Room. He is a co-administrator for the Jay Crump, D.O. Memorial Fund, which provides for the needs of the Emergency Department at PCRMC.
How did you first get involved in with the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation?
It doesn’t matter how much you make, it is what you do with what you make. It is not always financial. It is what you do with your heart and what you do with your acts, and your deeds.
Foundation in Focus 18
My wife and I’s introduction was sponsoring a private chemotherapy room in the Delbert Day Cancer Institute in honor of my mother, Joan Kerr, who died of thyroid cancer. Who has influenced your decision to donate to the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? Dr. Jay Crump was my mentor and trainer at PCRMC. Dr. Jay Crump and Dr. David Myers were instrumental in teaching me as a medical student and intern. They were one of the main reasons why my family moved to Rolla. This was the type of community we were looking for to raise a family. Dr. Crump and Dr. Myers had a strong interest in taking care of the whole person. They have never known a stranger. They treated everyone equally and fairly and would help them in any way, shape, or form. It’s an honor for me to be one of the co-administrators for the Jay Crump, D.O. Memorial Fund where we can pass it on for education and training for our emergency room staff, which he was passionate about.
What might someone be surprised to know about you? I was raised in a rural Iowa community where our family business was a full-service gas station with a bait shop. I worked 24 hours on the weekend. In the evenings, I enjoyed hunting raccoons with my father not only for enjoyment, but also as another income source for my family. What has surprised you most about working with the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? What I have noticed is the involvement of the Foundation in the community. I was not aware of the breadth of this outreach. The Foundation serves many needs of patients and the community. As a strong supporter of the Guardian Angel program, why do you feel strongly about this type of program and recognizing employees within the hospital? In healthcare, there are many highly stressful situations for healthcare workers. The Guardian Angel program has become a way for me to reach out in a positive way to people who have done a great job. I have also used it as an avenue for patients and their families who have had positive experiences with the hospital. This allows me to share their story with the Foundation when they may
not have the means to do so themselves. When we give someone acknowledgment for something that they have done right, their light gets brighter, and they pass that torch onto others. It becomes infectious! How would you describe your personal mission? Passing it forward. That is something that my wife and I have taught our children and grandchildren. No matter the situation you are in, there is always something positive you can pass forward. It doesn’t matter how much you make, it is what you do with what you make. It is not always financial. It is what you do with your heart, your acts, and your deeds. What do you wish other people knew about the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation? I would like them to know how much outreach the Foundation does within the community. For example, assisting with transportation needs, equipment needs, helping patients get to their appointments, or helping parents travel to St. Louis to be with their critically-ill child when they do not have the money to get there. I think many times people do not give because they do not think it makes a difference, but whatever they give helps.
