Los colibríes, joyas en bosques y jardines

a primera vez que vi un colibrí sentí algo como mariposas en el estómago. Y es que para una europea, estas aves exclusivas del continente americano son una increíble atracción. Costa Rica tiene 52 especies de colibríes, entre las que se encuentra el ave más pequeña del país, la chispita gorginaranja (Selasphorus scintilla) que mide apenas 6,5 cms y pesa aproximadamente entre dos y tres gramos. Puede observarse en las montañas de Talamanca, alrededor de San Isidro del General entre los 900 y los 2100 m de altitud.

Los colibríes son auténticas jardineros, ya que al alimentarse de néctar de flores, facilitan la reproducción vegetal mediante la polinización. Por eso, el uso de comederos artificiales de agua con azúcar no es recomendable para atraerlos, ya que dejan de cumplir con esa importante misión. Muchas personas no saben que los colibríes también comen pequeños insectos, de modo que evitando el uso de plaguicidas podrá disfrutar del revoloteo de estos mágicos pajarillos en su entorno.

La coloración de las plumas de los colibríes varía mucho con la luz, por eso al moverse parecen tener brillos metálicos y cambiar de color. En realidad lo que ocurre es que sus plumas presentan micromoléculas estructurales que reflejan y dispersan la luz, creando ese maravilloso efecto iridiscente.

Para observar colibríes en su jardín recomendamos sembrar plantas con flor que los atraigan, como por ejemplo el rabo de zorro, (Stachytarpheta cayennensis) o diferentes tipos de heliconias y amapolas. También árboles como roble de sabana y guabas, son muy atractivos para los colibríes en su época de floración.

Estas diminutas joyas de nuestros bosques y jardines, son capaces de batir las alas a una velocidad increíble, hasta 80 veces por segundo, siendo las únicas aves capaces de volar hacia atrás. Al ser tan veloces sufren de choques accidentales contra las ventanas, que pueden evitarse fácilmente colgando finas cuerdas en el exterior de las mismas, separadas entre sí a un máximo de 10 cms. ■

he first time I saw a hummingbird I felt something like butterflies in my stomach.

For a European, these birds exclusive to the American continent are an incredible attraction. Costa Rica has 52 species of hummingbirds, including the smallest bird in the country, the sparrow gorginaranja (Selasphorus scintilla), which measures only 6.5 cms and weighs between two and three grams. It can be observed in the mountains of Talamanca, around San Isidro del General between 900 and 2100 meters of altitude.

Hummingbirds are true gardeners, because when feeding on nectar of flowers. They facilitate plant reproduction through pollination. Therefore, the use of artificial water feeders with sugar is not recommended to attract them, as they fail to fulfill this important mission. Many people do not know that hummingbirds also eat small insects. So, avoiding the use of pesticides will enjoy the flutter of these magical little birds in their surroundings. The coloring of the feathers of hummingbirds varies greatly with light. When they move they appear to have metallic highlights and change color. Actually, what happens is that their feathers have structural micro molecules that reflect and scatter light, creating that wonderful iridescent effect.

To observe hummingbirds in your garden we recommend planting flowering plants that attract them, such as the foxtail (Stachytarpheta cayennensis) or different types of heliconias and poppies. Also trees such as savannah oak and guavas, are very attractive to hummingbirds during their flowering season.

These tiny jewels of our forests and gardens are able to beat the wings at incredible speed, up to 80 times per second, being the only birds capable of flying backwards. Their speed causes them to suffer from accidental shocks against the windows. Pérez Zeledón prohíbe el uso de agroquímicos en espacios públicos

C

on una votación virtualmente unánime del Concejo Municipal en abril del año 2017, la Municipalidad de Pérez Zeledón se convirtió en el primer municipio en implementar una prohibición total del uso de agroquímicos en espacios públicos; incluyendo caminos y zanjas, áreas verdes, campos de fútbol, etc. A la audiencia asistieron más de 125 personas. Las presentaciones fueron dadas por Bolívar Ureña, Presidente de AsoOrgánicos, una asociación de productores agrícolas que están en proceso de certificación, Amy Schrift, Fiscal de Aso-Orgánicos y Representante de Vida Auténtica (www.vidaautentica.org), una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece clases gratuitas a los pueblos de los alrededores y Fabián Pacheco, presidente del Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (INA) de Cartago, especializado en agricultura orgánica (www.bloqueverde.blogspot.com). Una petición con más de 750 firmas de vecinos de las comunidades de Pérez Zeledón y la Región Brunca fue presentada al Concejo.

Esta tierra de gallardos ha producido grandes personajes que la enorgullecen. Algunos de ellos son un ejemplo de perseverancia, trabajo duro y convicción, distinguiéndose por la fe, humildad y sencillez con que afrontan su vida cotidiana.

En San Isidro de El General, nació una estrella que brilla en lo alto, su luz ha puesto a Costa Rica en el GPS mundial de millones de personas. Él vive la fe con humildad, es un hombre sencillo que ha luchado contra la adversidad desde muy jovencito. Un hombre que vive su vida sin apariencias ni engaños, ama a su familia y es un padre muy amoroso. La vida ha puesto muchas tentaciones y obstáculos en su camino, pero Keylor Navas, con su actitud llena de fe ha construido una vida ejemplar para todos los costarricenses y el resto del mundo.

Keylor Navas ha demostrado capacidades, disciplina y confianza en sí mismo, sabe lo que quiere y lucha día a día por alcanzar sus metas.

El sábado 3 de junio del 2017, el generaleño Keylor Navas bajo la portería del Real Madrid ganó dos Champions seguidas y una Liga, el primer doblete desde 1958, marcando un hito para Navas y el Real.

Navas enorgullece a toda una nación que cree en él y lo apoya de forma incondicional. Indudablemente él sigue siendo un protagonista espectacular en esta temporada futbolística, ya le pertenecen dos títulos de ¨Champions¨.

Sí, se puede cuando usted cree en sí mismo. ■

he jewel of the Costa Rican south, ¨Pérez Zeledón¨ is hidden between valleys and mountains where «Mother Nature» adorns its existence with the best it can offer. This land of gallant has produced great characters that pride it. Each of them is distinguished by their faith, humility and simplicity with which they face daily life; being an example of perseverance, hard work and conviction.

In San Isidro de El General, a star was born that shines on high, its light has put Costa Rica in the global GPS of millions of people. He lives his faith with humility, is a simple man who has fought against adversity since very young. He lives his life without appearances or deceptions, loves his family, and is a loving father. Life has put many temptations and obstacles in its path, but, Keylor Navas, with his attitude full of faith continues to build a very exciting life for all Costa Ricans and the rest of

the world.

demás de la gran variedad de lagartos y de serpientes, nuestro parque alberga también una diversa variedad de tortugas, una de las cuales es la tortuga cabezona de Madagascar (Erymnochelys madagascariensis); esta especie está en grave peligro de extinción e incluso su reproducción es reducida en su hábitat natural en la isla de Madagascar. Por eso criamos estos animales y contribuimos con un programa de reintroducción de especies.

La tortuga de cuello largo de McCord (Chelodina mccordi) es una rareza en el mundo de las tortugas porque es endémica de la isla de Roti en Indonesia. La tortuga nariz de cerdo (Carettochelys

insculpta) es nativa de Nueva Guinea y el norte de Australia. Son diferentes a otras tortugas de agua dulce porque en lugar de patas tienen aletas similares a las de las tortugas marinas. De Suramérica tenemos a la tortuga cabezona amazónica (Peltocephalus dumerilianus) que vive en armonía con lagartos y peces de su hábitat natural. Y del Amazonas está una de las criaturas más bizarras del mundo, la matamata (Chelus fimbriata). Su caparazón parece un tronco de árbol y su cabeza una hoja caída. Espera quieta en el agua, confiando en su camuflaje hasta que un pez se acerca; entonces abre su gran boca y en décimas de segundo absorbe literalmente a

su presa. Esta técnica se llama alimentación por succión. También la cabeza de la tortuga de caparazón suave de África Central parece un personaje de la Guerra de las Galaxias. Las dos anteriores comen peces. La mayoría de las tortugas son omnívoras, o sea comen animales y plantas. Las especies costarricenses exhibidas son la tortuga roja (Rhinoclemmys), la de orejas amarillas (Trachemys) e incluso la más pequeña de Costa Rica, la tortuga pecho en cruz (Kinosternon angustipons). Todas nuestras tortugas tienen un terreno para hacer sus nidos y poner sus huevos, pero nuestra exhibición también permite a los visitantes ver sus vidas acuáticas. ■

That is why we breed these animals and even contribute to a reintroduction program. Also, the Roti Island snake-necked turtle (Chelodina mccordi) is a rarity in the turtle world because it only occurs on Roti Island in Indonesia. The Fly River or pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) is native to New Guinea and Northern Australia. They are unlike any other freshwater turtles because instead of feet they have flippers, which resemble those of seawater turtles. bizarre-looking creatures of the world, is the matamata (Chelus fimbriata). The shell of this animal looks like a piece of bark, and its head resembles a fallen leaf. It waits motionless in the water, relying on its camouflage, until a fish comes close. Then, it opens its large mouth and in a fraction of a second, literally sucks its egZn ^ch^YZ0 i]^h ^h XVaaZY hjXi^dc [ZZY^c\# I]Z ]ZVY d[ 6jWgZn¼h soft shell turtle from Central Africa looks like a character from the Star Wars movies! The previous two species are fish eaters. Most turtles have an omnivorous diet; this means they eat both animal and plant matter. Costa Rican species shown are Neotropical wood turtles (Rhinoclemmys), yellow-eared sliders (Trachemys), VcY ZkZc 8dhiV G^XV¼h hbVaaZhi ijgiaZ! i]Z narrow-bridged mud turtle (Kinosternon angustipons). mediados de los 70 en un viaje a Hacienda Baru con mi hija, Natalie, de 10 años, una iguana verde corrió a través del camino rural.“¿Oh, Dios mío, papá, ¿qué fue esa cosa tan horrible?”

Me reí y le dije que no se preocupara que era sólo una iguana verde y que son perfectamente inofensivas. “Son buenas para comer” dije. “Saben a pollo. Por eso les dicen gallina de palo”.

Su rostro se puso verde. “Papi! Voy a vomitar!” Frené el jeep bruscamente y Natalie se colgó por la ventana y se liberó del almuerzo. Más tarde ella me explicó que el domingo anterior había ido a Puntarenas con la familia de una amiga y habían comido “gallina de palo”.

En esos días las iguanas verdes eran una comida común en muchos hogares de zonas rurales. Las iguanas negras, comúnmente llamadas “garrobos” rara vez se comían. Recuerdo haber preguntado a uno de los trabajadores de Hacienda Barú si se comen los garrobos.

“Nosotros no” replicó, “pero si hay gente que los comen”, con una mirada de disgusto en su rostro.

Los seres humanos siempre han preferido la carne de los herbívoros en vez de la de los carnívoros. Las iguanas verdes (Iguana iguana) son estrictamente herbívoros, aunque de vez en cuando accidentalmente consumen insectos o caracoles que se encuentran en las hojas que están comiendo. I laughed and told her not to worry that it was only a green iguana, and they are perfectly harmless. “They’re good to eat” I said.

“They taste like chicken. It’s sometime called ‘tree chicken.”

Her face turned green. “Daddy! I’m gonna puke!” I brought the car to an abrupt halt, and Natalie hung out the window and relieved herself of lunch. Later she explained that on the previous HjcYVn h]Z ]VY \dcZ id EjciVgZcVh l^i] V [g^ZcY¼h [Vb^an! VcY they had eaten “tree chicken”.

In those days green iguanas were a common meal at rural dinner tables. Black spiny-tailed iguanas were seldom eaten. I remember asking one of the workers at Hacienda Barú if people ever eat black iguanas. “We don’t eat them” he replied, “But

I rotate between the beaches in our program: Playas Dominical, Hermosa and Ventanas.

How long have you been a lifeguard?

I worked for 6 years with the Dominical Lifeguards and now more than 3 years with the Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards program.

What is the most amazing thing experienced at work?

A rescue of 6 people on Playa Hermosa where I had to use all of my experience as a jet ski driver to help those people in very big waves.

What is the most important safety tip for people at the beach?

Ask the lifeguards or other locals about the ocean conditions before getting in the water.

How many people have you rescued?

I believe that more than 100 people are alive thanks to our initiative.

What type of equipment/clothing does the lifeguard program need most?

ATV, Jet Ski and a defibrillator.

What trainings or courses are coming up?

This is a bit difficult during the green season. I have the boys concentrate on physical fitness and training. We offer a free fitness class to the public every Wednesday in Dominical - we love it when people join us!

What is the #1 quality you look for in a new lifeguard?

Courage and someone who does not give up easily.

What do wish for the future of the Lifeguards Costa Ballena?

We need government funding and support. A national program with certification and benefits for the lifeguards. I want young people to see being a lifeguard as a good career choice that saves lives.

Pero, ¿cómo demuestran los perros su amor hacia usted?

Tú abrazas a tu perro, pero no acepta ser abrazado; es porque prefiere darte un abrazo de perro; de esa forma intenta inclinarte hacia atrás. Su perro quiere dormir con usted porque usted es su familia. Si no, intente acostarse en el piso con él, traerá su juguete lleno de babas para jugar y compartir su posesión favorita con usted. Su perro siempre quiere estar con usted; te sigue por todas partes porque él nunca necesita tiempo “solitario”. ¿Ha estado triste y notado que su perro viene a su lado? Eso demuestra que percibe tu tristeza y eso le preocupa.

Saltar y juguetear son signos amorosos de alegría en su compañía, sin importar si no se aprecian. Su perro sonríe; mira qué tan relajado está su rostro y sus orejas cuando está contigo. Él mira profundamente en tus ojos y sus besos son gestos verdaderos de afecto, aunque también podrían ser provocados por el olor a hamburguesa de su aliento.

Investigaciones demuestran que también pueden levantar su ceja izquierda cuando saludan. Esta es una expresión facial del amor controlada por el lado derecho, emocional del cerebro. Trate de devolver el favor. No es fácil, ¿verdad?

ou show your dog love in many ways. You feed him, walk and play with him, groom and tickle him and act like a complete, shameless fool to amuse him. You sleep with him and give way too many treats; you cook for him and buy him silly collars, leashes and toys, but how does your dog show he loves you?

It is showing love and empathy. Your dog wants to sleep with you Shawnell Parker because you are his loving pack. If that is not the rule in your house, try lying on the floor with him. He brings you his slobbered-on toy not just to get you to play but to share his favorite possession. Your dog always wants to be with you; he never needs “alone” time. So he follows you everywhere and yes those kisses are genuine signs of affection although they can be caused by the leftover hamburger on your breath. Jumping and roughhousing are signs of playfulness and joy, but they may not always be appreciated. Your dog smiles; look at how relaxed his face and ears are. He gazes deep into your eyes. Research shows that he also may raise his left eyebrow when greeting you. This facial expression of love is controlled by the emotional right side of the brain. Try returning the favor. Not easy is it?

Sometimes called the love hormone or cuddle chemical, Oxytocin is released in humans and also dogs when they experience love. Playing with your dog can release this hormone. Ask any volunteer why they do what they do and they will tell you it is out of love.

La policía a menudo no tiene el apoyo necesario y sus fondos son insuficientes. Una grave falta de oportunidades pone en riesgo a los jóvenes. La generación de empleo no

Juan Vásquez

En 1561, Cartago el primer asentamiento exitoso, fue establecido por Juan Vásquez de Coronado. Se convirtió en la primera capital de Costa Rica y él fue el primer gobernador. Coronado hizo la paz con un jefe indígena local, quien persuadió a otros jefes a cooperar con

los españoles. A pesar de este acuerdo muchas de las tribus restantes huyeron de los valles y de las costas hacia la fila casi inaccesible de Talamanca.

En 1601, Gonzalo Vázquez de Coronado, hijo de Juan Vázquez, inauguró oficialmente el Camino Real, también conocido como Camino de Mulas éste conectaba Guatemala con todas las provincias hasta Panamá. Las mulas eran criadas en el Valle Central y conducidas hasta Panamá. El Camino de Mulas se convirtió en la ruta de tránsito de metales preciosos de América del Sur a España.

Los equipos de mulas pasaban por los pueblos indígenas de Quepos, Boruca y Térraba.

En 1629 los Borucas fueron «reducidos» bajo el dominio español. Los nativos se transformaron en arrieros y proveedores de tributos para los españoles, especialmente de maíz, frijoles, textiles, tintes de textiles y construcción de embarcaciones. ■

T

he Boruca Indian history contains some very hard chapters.

Through the long duration of the Spanish conquest, they did not give up! The Diquis region (southern border of Costa Ballena) became an important gold mining center, which brought raids and warfare with other indigenous groups.

Columbus reported that he had found a land rich in gold, hence further explorations. A ship of colonists led by Diego de Nicuesa landed in 1506. More explorers continued to arrive. In 1522, Gil Gonzalez Davila with over 100 men explored the interior from the Gulf of Nicoya to Burica Point (southern tip of Costa Rica), where the Spaniards received collaboration from some tribal chiefs.

To attract new settlers to the colonies Spain established a program called “encomienda system” (an estate given to a settler who received legal rights to use local native people to work the land, unpaid). In 1561, Cartago the first successful settlement, was established by Juan Vasquez de Coronado. It became Costa

Rehabilitar y Liberar bebés

E

n el Santuario de Vida Silvestre tenemos una misión muy clara rescatar, rehabilitar y liberar. Con estos principios se creó este proyecto ya hace más de dos años, y estamos seguros que hemos logrado causar un impacto positivo en la comunidad.

El proceso de liberación de una especie es algo complicado, siempre tratamos de que todos los casos terminen en un final feliz pero no es una tarea fácil, ya que la tenencia en cautiverio de animales sigue siendo bastante alta y su nivel de domesticación es tan grande que en muchas ocasiones les impide tener la oportunidad de ser liberados.

Sin embargo hay esperanza especialmente con los bebés que llegan al santuario, estos han perdido a su madre por accidentes, electrocuciones o maltrato.

En nuestro centro tenemos un equipo compuesto por staff y voluntarios que se encarga de darles el amor y el cuidado que estos pequeños necesitan, siguiendo los protocolos de crianza para lograr una liberación exitosa.

Este proceso comienza justo cuando el animal ingresa al santuario, de manera

integral se va trabajando en su salud, dieta y contacto con los seres humanos para que estos bebés lleguen a la edad adecuada de liberación con las aptitudes necesarias para poder desenvolverse en su habitat.

Entre las especies más comunes que recibimos en el centro están tamandúas, perezosos, oposums, mapaches y pizotes.

Hoy queremos hablarles del caso de uno de nuestros bebés tamandúas (oso hormiguero): Luna llegó al santuario con dos meses de edad y trabajamos muy duro para criarla durante aproximadamente un año hasta que se convirtió en una preciosa y saludable oso hormiguero completamente lista para para volver a la naturaleza.

Esto nos llena de mucho orgullo y felicidad y nos impulsa a seguir trabajando.

Al día de hoy tenemos 21 bebés entre perezosos, osos hormigueros, búhos, oposums, iguanas, kinka jous y otros que requieren nuestras atenciones que después de mucho esfuerzo serán reintroducidos a la naturaleza. ■

Rehalitate and Release

A

t the Wildlife Sanctuary we have a very clear mission: rescue, rehabilitate and release. With these principles in mind this project was created more than two years ago, and we are sure that we have managed to have a positive impact on the community.

The process of releasing a species is somewhat complicated, we always try to ensure that all cases conclude in a happy ending but it is not an easy task, since the captive holding of animals is still quite high and their level of domestication is so great.

It often prevents them from having the opportunity to be released.

However, there is hope especially with the babies who arrive at the sanctuary, they have lost their mother by accidents, electrocutions or mistreatment. In our center we have a team composed of staff and volunteers that is in charge of giving them the love and care that these small ones need, always following the breeding protocols to achieve a successful release.

This process begins just when the animal enters the sanctuary, in an integral way we are working on their health, diet and contact with humans so that these babies reach the appropriate age of release with the necessary skills to be able to function in their habitat.

Among the most common species we receive in the center are tamanduas, sloths, opossums, raccoons and coatis.

Today we want to tell you about the case of one of our baby anteaters: Luna came to the sanctuary at two months of age and we worked very hard to raise her for about a year until she became a beautiful and healthy anteater completely ready to return to nature.

This fills us with much pride and happiness and encourages us to continue working.

To this day we have 21 babies among sloths, anteaters, owls, opossums, iguanas, kinka jous and others that require our attentions and after much effort will be reintroduced to nature. ■

ace algunos años, Sharon y su esposo Vee encontraron su casa de Enanos en Ojochal a través de House Hunters International. Era una propiedad en ruinas y ellos aceptaron el reto de reformarla. Ahora viajan regularmente de Costa Rica a California donde ella es directora artística de dos compañías de teatro, actriz, vocalista, entrenadora y maestra.

Kelly y su familia han estado en Dominical por 8 años.

Amando la danza y habiendo trabajado con niños toda su vida, hace 7 años creó el estudio Jungle Dance para niños de todas las edades donde da hasta cuatro clases semanales en hip hop / jazz / estilo libre y ofrece una producción anual.

Sharon habló con una vecina de Ojochal Karen Rath (madre de un joven que tomaba las clases de Kelly) acerca de traer teatro a Costa Ballena. En un día, Karen reunió a 12 estudiantes y las clases comenzaron.

A Sharon y Kelly les unió una amistad instantánea. Tantas ideas surgieron y decidieron producir, basado en el musical de 1978 con John Travolta, Grease Jr, (Vaselina).

Después de muchos ensayos de danza, juegos y trajes, mejorado de gran manera por el telón de fondo que Sharon especialmente trajo desde California, el musical fue mostrado en mayo frente a una sala llena en Roca Verde.

En un espectáculo asombroso, los jóvenes dieron su corazón y sus almas cantando y bailando. El aplauso efusivo de los padres y del público que venían de cerca y de lejos reconoció su talento y esfuerzo.

“Se podía percibir un sentido increíble de comunidad, los padres estaban radiantes, todo el mundo había aportado algo para hacer la presentación asequible y los niños se ayudaron mutuamente”, dijo Sharon Boucher, que también estuvo radiante de emoción. Y cuando Kelly recibió flores en el escenario, lágrimas corrían por sus mejillas: “Estoy muy orgullosa de estos niños, llenan mi corazón con tanta alegría!

Volveremos el año que viene al mismo tiempo! ” ■

A

few years ago, Sharon and her husband Vee found their Hobbit House in Ojochal through House Hunters International. It was a dilapidated property that they took the challenge of refurbishing. Now, they are travelling regularly from Costa Rica to California where she is the artistic director to two theater companies, an actress, vocalist, coach and teacher.

Kelly and her family have been in Dominical for 8 years. Loving dance and having worked with children all her life, 7 years ago she created Jungle Dance for children of all ages where she gives up to four classes weekly in hip hop/jazz/free style and a yearly production.

Sharon spoke with Ojochal neighbor Karen Rath (mother of V ndjc\hiZg iV`^c\ @Zaan¼h XaVhhZh VWdji Wg^c\^c\ i]ZViZg id Costa Ballena. Within a day, Karen gathered 12 students and the classes began.

Sharon and Kelly bonded an instant friendship. So many ideas came up that they decided to create Grease Jr, based on the 1978

musical featuring John Travolta.

In May, after many dance, play and costume rehearsals, greatly enhanced by the backdrop that Sharon especially flew in from California, the musical was shown to a full house at Roca Verde.

In an amazing spectacle the youngsters gave their heart and souls singing and dancing. Overwhelming applause by parents and public who had come from near and far acknowledged their talent and efforts.

“You could feel an incredible sense of community, parents were beaming, everybody had pitched in assistance to make it an affordable presentation, and the kids helped each other out”, said Sharon Boucher who herself was beaming with emotion.

And when Kelly received flowers on the stage, tears ran down her cheeks: “I am so incredibly proud of these kids. They fill my heart with so much joy!

We will be back next year same time!” ■

Darrel pasó años en San José construyendo proyectos de viviendas asequibles, sin perder de vista sus raíces en Costa de Ballena y gestionar ventas de propiedades allá.

No todo fue “Pura Vida”, Darrel se enfermó y pasó 4 meses en un hospital estatal en San José, donde experimentó la política costarricense “Curar primero - pagar más tarde”. Darrel tenía un 20% de posibilidades de supervivencia: “Me salvaron la vida”, y se sorprendió con la gran gente que conoció.

En 2013 Darrel se trasladó a tiempo completo a Ojochal. Hoy en día, está feliz de aportar su experiencia de toda la vida a una de las más reconocidas franquicias de bienes raíces en el mundo, Century 21 y Ballena Properties.

arrel Simonson es de Saskatoon en el oeste de Canadá. Ahí es donde creció, se casó muy joven y tuvo tres niños, trabajando en tres trabajos para llegar a fin de mes.

Después de varios puestos de trabajo ingresó al grupo de Transporte multinacional especializada en el manejo de Mudanzas & Almacenamiento. Luego de 20 años culminó su carrera como vicepresidente de Ventas y Mercadeo en la oficina central en Toronto. Estresado por la carga de trabajo sintió que necesitaba un cambio.

En 1995 Randy Burns su amigo y un residente de Dominical de largo tiempo, lo invitó a venir a Costa Rica. Ambos compraron motocicletas y exploraron el Sur, aun no existiendo la Costera; esto a veces provocó que la travesia se volviera una aventura. Cuando Darrel conoció a Jack Ewing (hoy dueño de Hacienda Barú), fue presentado al negocio de bienes raíces y comenzó a trabajar en South Coast Realty en Dominical; comunicación quería decir hacer viajes a San Isidro para enviar faxes, ya que en ese momento no había teléfonos móviles.

San Clemente (hoy Patrons) tenía una antena parabólica y era el único lugar para obtener noticias.

Darrel recuerda especialmente el huracán César (julio de 1996) que incomunicó el sur y tomó muchas vidas, se transportaron medicinas por aire y, en su oficina fue establecido un ambulatorio médico. A través de los deslizamientos y en caballo trajeron a una joven embarazada. Hubo complicaciones y finalmente un helicóptero aterrizó en el campo de fútbol con un médico a bordo.

arrel Simonson is from Saskatoon in western Canada. There he was raised, married very young, and had three boys. At times he held 3 jobs to make ends meet.

After working in various fields, he joined a multinational trucking group specializing in Moving & Storage Management. 20 years later he culminated his career as the VP of Sales and Marketing in Toronto.

Stressed by the workload, he realized a change was needed.

In 1995 Randy Burns, his friend and longtime Dominical resident, invited him to Costa Rica. Both bought motorcycles and explored the South. The Coastal Highway did not yet exist, making it more adventurous. When Darrel met Jack Ewing (the current owner of Hacienda Barú), he was introduced to the real estate business and started working at South Coast Realty. Communication meant driving to San Isidro to send faxes, since at that time there were no phones.

San Clemente (today Patrons) had a satellite dish and was the only place to get news.

Darrel especially remembers Hurricane Cesar July 1996. The storm cut off the South and took many lives. His office was used as a medical center and medicines were flown in. A young pregnant woman from Hatillo came by horseback to give birth. There were complications, and like a miracle a helicopter landed in the soccer field with a doctor on board.

Darrel spent years in San Jose building affordable housing projects, but never lost sight of his roots on the Ballena Coast and continued selling property there.

Not all was “Pura Vida”. Darrel became very ill and spent 4 months hospitalized in San Jose. There, he experienced a Costa Rican policy “Fix first – pay later.”

He was given a 20% chance of survival: “They saved my life”. He was amazed by the great people he met.

Darrel now lives in Ojochal where he is happy to bring a lifetime of experiences to one of the most recognized names in Real Estate, Century 21 Ballena Properties.

He will be your best advisor on what to “buy” and how to “build” on the Ballena Coast. ■

n 2016 figuras prominentes de la comunidad de Costa Ballena decidieron unir las organizaciones de seguridad bajo el paraguas de CACOBA, la Cámara de Turismo y Comercio. Entre ellos estaban Peter Marschall, Oscar Zeledón y Perry Gladstone. El plan era poner en alianza directa con OIJ, Fuerza Pública, MINAET a Salvavidas, Cap On Crime, Los Cauceles, Ojochal y STS Security, formando un frente unido contra las acciones delictivas, con el objeto de convertirla en la región más segura de Costa Rica para los residentes y visitantes.

Una de las primeras operaciones tuvo lugar en el Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. Los miembros de la comunidad financiaron el despliegue de Los Cauceles, una organización de guardias de seguridad locales que protegen la playa

del Parque Nacional Marino Ballena.

Esta iniciativa exitosa tuvo un impacto positivo directo, con una reducción inmediata de la delincuencia.

Una segunda medida invitó a STS Security a estar presente en las oficinas de CACOBA en Uvita, brindando servicios de seguridad, despliegue rápido de guardias, alarmas, cámaras y sistemas de control de acceso, creando así servicios confiables de seguridad para residentes y empresas.

STS con cuatro oficinas en Santa Ana, Jacó, Quepos y Uvita, fue elegida en base a su trayectoria de diez años en la prestación de servicios de seguridad para Costa Rica. Proporciona apoyo 24/7 a clientes y colaboradores y ha proporcionado servicios de seguridad desde el año 2015 a Axiom Development Group y más recientemente a Pueblo del Río en

Dominical. Prestan servicios de vigilancia a más de 150 comunidades, hoteles y hogares en la región del Pacífico Central y Sur. Algunas de las iniciativas que CACOBA está planeando para el 2017 es implementar cámaras CCTV monitoreadas en áreas públicas, motivar a los residentes para conectar sus hogares con alarmas y servicios de monitoreo de cámaras que conectan directamente con el monitoreo de apoyo, crear un registro de seguimiento de actividades delictivas en la zona, asignar fondos privados a programas que aumenten la concienciación y promuevan la prevención del delito.

Medidas de seguridad preventivas hacen a Costa Ballena muy atractiva, tanto para visitantes como residentes por igual, y poco llamativa para la actividad criminal! ■

I

n 2016 prominent figures in the Costa Ballena community decided to join together security organizations under the umbrella of CACOBA, the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

Among them were Peter Marschall, Oscar Zeledón and Perry Gladstone. The plan was to put Cap On Crime, Los Cáuceles, Ojochal Security Council, and STS Security into direct alliance with the OIJ, Fuerza Pública, MINAET and Lifeguards forming a united front against crime, making it the safest region in Costa Rica for residents and visitors.

One of the first operations took place at the Marino Ballena National Park. Community members funded the deployment of Los Cáuceles, an organization of local security guards that protected the Ballena National Park beach during 2017 high season. This successful initiative made a direct positive impact with an immediate reduction in crime.

A second measure invited STS Security to be present at the CACOBA offices in Uvita, providing security services, quick deployment of guards, alarm, camera and access control

systems, thus creating reliable security services for residents and businesses.

STS was chosen based on its 10-year trajectory in providing security services for the Costa Rica with four offices (Santa Ana, Jacó, Quepos, Uvita). It provides support 24/7 to clients and collaborators and has provided security services since 2015 to the Axiom Development Group, and more recently to Pueblo del Rio in Dominical. They survey over 150 communities, hotels and homes in the Central and South Pacific Region.

A few of the initiatives that CACOBA is planning for 2017: deploy monitored CCTV cameras in public areas, promote residents to connect their homes to alarm and camera monitoring services that connect directly to monitoring support, create a log book tracking criminal activity in the area, allocate private funds to programs that raise awareness and promote crime prevention.

Preventative security measures make Costa Ballena unattractive to criminal activity and highly attractive for visitors and residents alike! ■

Necesitamos ser flexibles para practicar yoga?

Como profesora me han manifestado esta inquietud y aquí va la buena noticia para aquellos de ustedes con la misma pregunta en mente: La práctica de asanas (posturas de yoga) implica más que flexibilidad. El objetivo de las posturas es crear un buen equilibrio entre la fuerza, la alineación adecuada y la conciencia corporal. Estas posturas buscan aumentar la flexibilidad, tanto como el equilibrio, y proporcionar una buena comprensión de la conexión entre la respiración adecuada, concentración y el movimiento anatómico.

Aprender yoga en forma correcta es un proceso lento, no van a practicar postu-

ras avanzadas en la primera clase, cada uno comienza con poses simples, y a su propio ritmo va agregando asanas más complejas sin forzar o luchar con ellas.

Así que si sienten curiosidad por la práctica, les animo a que prueben bajo el entendimiento de que es más que estiramientos al azar. Este es un método ancestral para abrir el cuerpo, eliminar las impurezas, crear energía y lo más importante: mantener un estado de calma corporal y mental. Una de las maravillas de la práctica es que más que centrarse en lo externo, trabaja a nivel celular e intenta purificar nuestros órganos, sistema respiratorio, digestivo

y nervioso, sentidos, emociones y todas las diferentes capas de nuestro ser. Es un método curativo y una forma de encontrar paz y tranquilidad.

Mi consejo es no casarse con la idea de que si no somos flexibles, la práctica de yoga se sentiría más como una experiencia penosa. Sugiero que lo intenten, tal vez será un reto al principio, pero el cuerpo encontrará su propio ritmo y espacio. No se presionen, dejen que la práctica haga el trabajo y antes de que lo crean posible se habrán hechos más flexibles. ¡Namaste! ■

Do we need to be flexible to practice yoga?

A

s a teacher I have been asked this question a lot. Here is the good news for those of you with that on your mind: The practice of asanas (yoga postures) involves more than flexibility. The aim of the postures is to create a good balance between strength, proper alignment and body awareness. These poses are looking to increase flexibility as well as balance. It provides a good understanding of the connection between proper breathing, concentration and anatomical movement.

Learning yoga the proper way is a slow process. You won´t perform advance postures in the first class, but will start with simple poses. At your own pace you’ll be adding more complex asanas without pushing or forcing into it.

So if you are feeling curious about yoga, I encourage you to give it try with the understanding that it is more than just random

stretches. Yoga is actually an ancient method to open up your body, remove impurities, create stamina and most importantly to maintain a state of calmness within the body and the mind. One of the beauties of the practice is that more than focusing on the external body, it works on a cellular level. It attempts to cleanse our organs, the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems, senses, emotions and all the different layers of our being. This healing method is a way to find peace and calmness.

My advice is not to buy into the idea that if you aren’t flexible yoga would feel more like a physical ordeal. I suggest you try it maybe it will be a bit of a challenge but your body will find its own rhythm and space. Don’t push yourself, let the practice do the work and before you think it possible you will be more flexible.

Futsal en Costa Ballena promete

R

oger Bonet llegó a Uvita directamente desde Barcelona. Es un joven de 29 años, Licenciado en Educación Física y Ciencias del Deporte de la Universidad de Barcelona, que inició a principios de agosto de 2016 una aventura en Costa Rica con su pareja , una maestra de una escuela privada en Costa Ballena.

Ya asentado en la zona, este joven catalán se planteó iniciar en la comunidad entrenamientos de Futsal para jóvenes, aprovechando su amplia experiencia en el terreno, dada su formación en el F.C. Barcelona como jugador y sus 12 años de experiencia como preparador.

El primer paso fue crear una actividad extracurricular para una escuela privada que hoy cuenta con 2 grupos divididos por edades.

Luego surgió la posibilidad de trabajar de la mano de Costa Ballena Futsal, equipo femenino creado en 2014 que emigró a San Isidro por falta de apoyo de la comunidad.

Después del acuerdo con los responsables del club femenino, Roger quedó como responsable de la creación y gestión de la sección masculina.

En febrero, el proyecto empezó a tomar forma con entrenamientos para varias edades y con el objetivo de inscribir equipos en competición nacional.

Actualmente, Costa Ballena Futsal promete, cuenta con un equipo U-15 y uno Senior que compiten a nivel nacional por todo el país, con jóvenes de entre 11 y 27 años, oriundos exclusivamente de Bahía y Uvita. Para que eso sea posible, junto a la búsqueda continua de patrocinios, jugadores y familiares se organizan para realizar ventas para financiar los costos de la competición.

Además, otro grupo de “Promesas” realiza entrenamientos una vez por semana con el fin de asegurar la continuidad del proyecto y fomentar la práctica deportiva desde muy pequeños. En total, gracias a este proyecto, 50 jóvenes de la comunidad, de entre 7 y 27 años, disfrutan de los beneficios físicos y sociales que aporta la práctica de este deporte colectivo. ■

I

n early August, 2016, Roger Bonet arrived in Bahía Uvita straight from Barcelona. This 29-year-old man, with a degree in Physical Education and Sports Sciences from UB (Universitat de Barcelona), embarked on an adventure in Costa Rica with his partner, a private school teacher in Costa Ballena.

When he finally settled here, this young Catalonian shared his plan to start a Futsal project for young people, thanks to his great experience on the field as a player for F.C. Barcelona and his 12 years as a coach.

The first step was to create an extracurricular activity for a private school, which now has two groups divided based on age.

Then came the possibility to work together with Costa Ballena Futsal, a female team that was founded in 2014 but moved to San Isidro due to lack of local support. After setting an agreement with the administrators of the female team, Roger was in charge

of creating and managing the men’s team.

By February the project had already started with training sessions and the objective to register teams in national tournaments.

Costa Ballena Men’s Futsal currently has both an Under-15 and a Senior team that play all over the country. The players are exclusively from Bahía and Uvita, and their ages range from 11 to 27 years old. To make this happen, besides constantly finding sponsors, players and their families organize activities to raise money to afford the high cost of competing.

Another group of minor leaguers train once a week to ensure the existence of the project, and also to encourage kids to start practicing sports. Thanks to this initiative, 50 young people from our community, between 7 and 27 years old, enjoy the physical and social benefits of participating in this team sport. ■

hogar del colibrí endémico de mangle (Amazilia boucardi) y la Cotinga (Carpodectes antoniae); la Isla del Caño, el Parque Nacional Corcovado, donde es posible encontrar el raro y endémico Piranga Hormiguera de mejillas negras (Habia atrimaxillaris); el refugio de vida silvestre Hacienda Barú y la reserva privada de Oro Verde para el Trogon vientribermejo (Trogon bairdii).

Dentro de 2 horas de observación de aves en la mañana, es fácil encontrar algunos de los más destacados iconos de la propiedad: el Arasarí Piquinaranja (Pteroglossus frantzii), el Charucú durmili de cuello blanco (Notharchus hyperrhynchus), el colorido Ara macao, en peligro de extinción, el encantador colibrí coronado, el colibrí hada (Thalurania colombica), el Tangara de lacre, la pava crestada (Penelope purpurascens), el

soterrey pechibarreteado (Cantorchilus semibadius), el batará negruzco (Thamnophilus bridgesi), el Coronado Manakin (Lepidothrix coronata) y muchos más.

La caminata lleva a las áreas abiertas de la reserva, a las faldas de las montañas costeras y luego a la selva tropical de las tierras bajas del Pacífico, una grandiosa galería de especies y finalmente a los ecosistemas costeros de Playa Ballena, terminando la gira de observación con una exitosa lista de más de 30 especies en una caminata.

irding Hotel Cristal Ballena´s grounds and the Costa Ballena area is very rewarding. More than 300 species including very special, rare birds have been reported. The hotel is between a tropical humid forest at the foothill of the coastal range mountains and the Pacific coast, contributing to a broad mix of forest and marine birdlife.

The hotel reserve is home to more than 250 types of birds. By visiting the local birding hotspots the range of birds gets bigger.

These include the Ballena Marine National Park especially for sea and shore birds including White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens), the TerrabaSierpe Wetlands, home to the endemic Mangrove Hummingbird (Amazilia boucardi) and the Yellow-billed Cotinga (Carpodectes antoniae), Caño Island, Corcovado National Park where it is possible to find the rare endemic Black-cheeked Ant-tanager (Habia atrimaxillaris), Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge and Oro Verde private reserve for the Baird´s Trogon (Trogon bairdii).

Within 2 hours of morning birding, it is easy to find some of the most stunning iconic highlights of the property: the Fiery-

billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii), White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus), the colorful and endangered Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), the charming Crowned Woodnymph hummingbird (Thalurania colombica), Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola), Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), Riverside Wren (Cantorchilus semibadius), Black-hooded Antshrike (Thamnophilus bridgesi), Blue-crowned Manakin (Lepidothrix coronata) and many more.

The hike takes you in the open areas of the reserve at the foothills of the coastal mountains and then into the tropical rainforest of the Pacific lowlands, a gallery forest and the coastal ecosystems of the Ballena Beach, ending with a successful check list of more than 30 species in one hike.

En la Península de Osa se encuentran el 25% de especies del mundo y en su bosque tropical húmedo la diversidad es admirable.

Por muchos años los bosques han sido amenazados y destruidos indiscriminadamente por la mano del hombre, acabando con especies tanto de flora como de fauna destruyendo ecosistemas muy frágiles e irrecuperables para el planeta.

Por la belleza y dureza de su madera fue talado casi en su totalidad. Actualmente es una especie protegida y está prohibida su comercialización. Sin embargo, manos escrupulosas la venden clandestinamente.

Su tronco surcado es muy particular y único y ha sido utilizado para levantar ranchos y restaurantes.

En Costa Rica hay muchas maderas cultivadas como la teca, el laurel y el pino que son alternativas excelentes para la construcción.

Al comprar especies protegidas como la madera del árbol Cara de Tigre u otra, usted es tan culpable de su extinción como las personas que talan los bosques. ■

In the Osa Peninsula there are 25% of the world’s species, and with its humid tropical forests its diversity is immense.

For many years the forests have been threatened and destroyed indiscriminately by the hand of man, ending with both species of flora and fauna destroying ecosystems very fragile and irrecoverable for the planet.

As a consequence, global warming has gradually increased, causing floods, droughts, tornadoes and increasingly powerful hurricanes, bringing destruction and hunger to the world’s habitants.

It calls for protection of a particular threatened tree species, the Aspidosperma myristicaefolium originally from Polynesia and known here as Cara de Tigre or Caja. Years ago, there was abundance at Cerro de Tigre at the highest point of the Coastal Range. It was almost entirely cut For the beauty and durability of its wood. At the moment it is a protected species and prohibited its commercialization. However, scrupulous hands have been selling it clandestinely to both nationals and foreigners. Its trunk is very particular and unique. So, it has been used to build ranches and restaurants.

In Costa Rica there are many cultivated woods, such as teak, laurel and pine that make them perfect for construction.

By purchasing protected species such as the Cara de Tigre wood you are as guilty of its extinction as the people who cut down the forests. ■

Reserva Playa Tortuga protege las tortugas marinas

R

eserva Playa Tortuga es un centro de investigación y educación biológica sin fines de lucro que fue fundado en en el año 2009 y está ubicado en la carretera a Playa Tortuga en Ojochal. Gracias al trabajo del Director de la Reserva, Biol. Oscar Brenes y su equipo, Playa Tortuga fue declarada oficialmente playa nacional de anidación de tortugas marinas en 2014.

La Reserva de 60 acres es una colmena de actividad durante todo el año, donde los biólogos y voluntarios trabajan duro para proteger los recursos ambientales del área. “Toda la institución está financiada por donaciones”, dice Brenes, biólogo tropical graduado de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica en 2009. “Confiamos en el apoyo financiero de quienes pueden dar un poco o mucho y de los que quieren una experiencia práctica como voluntarios en un programa de protección de vida silvestre costarricense”.

Los voluntarios, de corta y larga duración (principalmente de Europa, Estados Unidos y Canadá), contribuyen de diversas maneras a la Reserva. Por ejemplo, el Proyecto de Jardín de Mariposas involucra el estudio continuo de especies nativas, el abordaje de talleres de educación,

el cuidado de pupas y la liberación de mariposas.

También se cuenta con el Proyecto de Inventario de Mamíferos, el Proyecto de Monitoreo de Cocodrilos y Programas de Educación, el último de los cuales involucra la participación de grupos escolares locales, en módulos basados en las actuales iniciativas de conservación de la Reserva.

El Programa de Conservación de Tortugas Marinas de la Reserva, se lleva a cabo cada julio a diciembre y permite a los voluntarios adquirir conocimiento real sobre la biología de las tortugas marinas, a través del manejo de hembras anidadoras, el cuidado de los huevos y la liberación de crías. Los voluntarios se alojan directamente en la hermosa propiedad en habitaciones privadas, con comidas y servicios sencillos.

“Continuamos desarrollando relaciones positivas con los locales y construyendo alianzas estratégicas con académicos, gobiernos y grupos no gubernamentales, para poder juntos proteger los recursos costeros de esta área y desarrollar un turismo ecológico responsable", agrega Brenes. "La hermosa zona de Costa Ballena contiene una increíble riqueza de biodiversidad que debemos asegurar para las generaciones futuras". ■

Reserva Playa Tortuga Sea Turtles Protecting

R

eserva Playa Tortuga is a non-profit biological research and education center that was founded in 2009 and is located on the road to Playa Tortuga in Ojochal. Thanks to the hard work of Reserva Director Oscar Brenes and his team, Playa Tortuga (Turtle Beach) was officially declared a national sea tortoise nesting beach in 2014.

The 60-acre Reserva is a hive of activity yearround, where biologists and volunteers work hard to protect the environmental resources of the area.

“The whole institution is funded by donations,” says Brenes, a tropical biologist who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica in 2009. “We rely on the financial support of those who can give a little or a lot, and on those who want a hands-on Costa Rican wildlife volunteer experience.”

Short and long-term volunteers (mainly from Europe, the USA and Canada) contribute to the Reserva in several ways. For example, the Butterfly Garden Project involves ongoing study of native species, hosting education workshops, and care and release of pupae and butterflies. Inventory Project, the Crocodilian Monitoring Project and several Education Programs, the last of which involves delivery of modules to local school groups based on the Reserva’s current conservation initiatives.

The Reserva’s flagship Sea Turtle Conservation Program takes place every July to December, and allows volunteers to really get to know the biology of sea turtles through handling nesting females, caring for eggs and releasing hatchlings. Volunteers stay directly on the beautiful property in private rooms, with meals and simple amenities provided.

Regresarán los impuestos corporativos

N

uevamente a partir de septiembre de 2017 en Costa Rica las sociedades tendrán que pagar impuestos.

Después de que parte del articulado de la ley para impuestos de sociedades en 2015 fueron declarados inconstitucionales, éstos tuvieron que ser reescritos. La nueva Ley #9428, fue aprobada en marzo de 2017 y se espera que entre en vigor el 1 de septiembre de 2017. Todas las empresas, ya sean activas o inactivas, tendrán que pagar este impuesto de sociedades, pero la cantidad de impuesto pagado será menor para las empresas inactivas. Como regla general, las sociedades activas son las que dirigen un negocio y que deben pagar impuestos además del impuesto anual de sociedades. Las sociedades inactivas son aquellas que figuran como dueñas de propiedades tal como un activo inmobiliario o un vehículo.

¿Cuándo debo pagar?

La expectativa es que a partir del 1 de septiembre de 2017 las sociedades pagarán una cantidad prorrateada para el resto del 2017. En 2018 el monto total anual debe ser pagado al 30 de enero. ¿Qué pasa si no quiero más mi sociedad?

La nueva ley permite que las sociedades que han sido consideradas inactivas por lo menos 24 meses antes de la Ley #9428, puedan tener una exención en el impuesto de transferencia por un año a fin de dar tiempo para transferir sus activos ya sea a una persona privada u otra sociedad, y luego ser disueltas. Por lo tanto, si usted tiene una sociedad propietaria de un carro y decide que prefiere transferirlo a nombre personal en lugar de pagar el impuesto corporativo anual - haga la transferencia y disuelva su sociedad dentro del término de 1 año para no tener que pagar el nuevo impuesto sobre sociedades o los impuestos habituales asociados con la transferencia de un activo.

Costa Rica’s tax on corporations is back

eginning in September 2017, corporations in Costa Rica will be required to pay taxes once again. After certain articles in the previous corporate tax law were declared unconstitutional in 2015, they had to be rewritten. The new Law #9428 was passed into law in March 2017 and is currently expected to go into effect 1 September 2017. All corporations – whether active or inactive – will be required to pay this corporate tax, but the amount of tax paid will be lower for inactive corporations.

As a general rule, active corporations are those running a business and that are required pay taxes in addition to the annual corporate tax. Inactive corporations are those which exist to be the owner of property such as a real estate asset or a vehicle.

When do I pay?

The expectation is that beginning on September 1 of 2017 corporations will pay an amount prorated

for the remainder of 2017. In 2018 the full annual amount will be due by January 30.

What if I don’t want my corporation anymore?

The new law is allowing corporations which have been considered inactive for at least 24 months prior to Law #9428 to have a one-year exemption from paying the transfer tax in order to allow time for these corporations to transfer their assets either to a private individual or to another corporation, and then be dissolved. So, if you have a corporation for the ownership of your car and decide you would rather transfer the ownership into your personal name rather than pay the annual corporate tax – make this transfer and dissolve your corporation within 1 year. Then, you will not have to pay the new corporate tax or the usual taxes associated with transferring an asset. The legal cost for dissolving the corporation will be your responsibility.
