or la mañana, cuando me dirijo a la playa con mi tabla de boogie y mi perro, me siento muy agradecida por poder disfrutar del calor del sol, los sonidos y colores de la naturaleza y las olas que acarician mis pies.

Esto es también lo que nuestros visitantes que llegaron en enjambres desde todo el mundo para disfrutar del Festival de Envision experimentaron en la pequeña ciudad de Uvita. Aquí compartieron amistad, excelente música y talleres, el amplio océano, el clima cálido y la comida. Nuestra fruta recién cosechada es algo tan delicioso que nunca se puede comparar con los productos en los supermercados del hemisferio norte que son transportados todavía de color verde y luego madurados en contenedores oscuros.

Recientemente, la comunidad de Costa Ballena llevó a cabo un gran operativo, limpiando seis playas del Cantón de Osa de basura. Envision colaboró activamente y fue un ejemplo de actitud pro-ambiental, no permitiendo entre otros el plástico de un solo uso en el evento (pág.

58). Esta increíble iniciativa organizada por jóvenes de

la zona sur (con mención especial a “Osa Libre de Plástico” y “Limpiando Osa”) fue apoyada por las Cámaras de Turismo e instituciones ambientales.

Los Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards es otra iniciativa que nos orgullece. Estos jóvenes han salvado cientos de vidas del ahogamiento y evitado accidentes informando a los bañistas. Esta iniciativa privada, concebida por el Sr. Brian Nice, apoyada por un equipo de donantes y la junta de los guardavidas, actualmente no cuenta con fondos gubernamentales. ¿Cómo se administran y cómo usted puede ayudar? infórmese en las páginas 46/47 y 48.

arly in the morning when I head to the beach with my boogie board and my dog, I feel full of gratitude for being able to indulge in the warmth of the rising sun, sounds and colors of nature, and the waves that are lapping at my feet.

This is what our visitors experienced as well who arrived in swarms from all over the world to enjoy the Envision Festival in the tiny town of Uvita. They came to share friendship, excellent music and workshops, the ocean, the hot climate, and the food. Our freshly harvested fruit is something so delicious it can never be compared with supermarket produce in the Northern hemisphere that was transported still green and after ripened in dark containers.

Recently the community of Costa Ballena held a large cleaning operative, clearing six beaches of the Osa Cantón of trash. Envision actively helped and was an example of the environmental attitude amongst others by not allowing one-use plastic onsite (page 58.) This amazing initiative organized by young people from the Southern zone (special mention to “Osa Libre de Plástico” and “Limpiando Osa”) was supported by the Cham-

bers of Tourism and environmental institutions.

The Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards is something else we all are very proud of. These youngsters saved hundreds from drowning and prevented accidents by informing swimmers. This private initiative, brought into being by Mr. Brian Nice and supported by a team of donors and the lifeguard board, presently has no governmental funding. El Camino de Costa Rica

o que comenzó como un desafío personal recientemente se convirtió en un hito histórico para la residente de Lagunas Caryn Steele. Después de recorrer el Camino de Santiago en España el año pasado, Caryn decidió intentar el recientemente establecido Camino de Costa Rica (una desafiante marcha desde el Caribe cruzando las montañas hasta el Pacífico). En este punto, se dio cuenta de que ella podría ser la primera mujer en completar la caminata de dieciséis días en un recorrido continuo, además de tener cuatro días de descanso al hacerlo en doce!

En comparación con Caryn y su esposo Keith, que recorrieron 800 km en España el año pasado, los 280 km del Camino de Costa Rica pueden parecer más fáciles. Excepto por el hecho de que, a diferencia los caminos anchos y bien marcados de Santiago, los senderos en Costa Rica son a menudo estrechos, suben y bajan montañas escarpadas, accesibles solo con un guía de brazo fuerte y un machete afilado.

La asociación que patrocina la caminata organiza alojamiento y paradas de alimentación a lo largo del camino con los residentes locales. Los caminantes no solo pueden ver Costa Rica de una manera que rara vez es vista por personas ajenas, sino que también disfrutan de la cálida hospitalidad tica de una manera íntima y única.

Al preguntársele acerca de sus preparativos para la caminata, Caryn dijo: “Su entrenamiento debería incluir ascensos y descensos empinados a pleno sol. ¡No es muy divertido, pero es necesario!” Continuó diciendo que lo que la convenció de caminar por el Camino era querer ser parte de lo que estaba experimentando. Simplemente se sintió diferente. “¡Estaba más relajada y con los ojos abiertos con todo lo nuevo que estaba viendo! Cuando se le preguntó sobre el apoyo proporcionado por la Asociación El Camino de Costa Rica, ella dijo: ‘Los guías están muy bien informados sobre el Camino y conocen personalmente a muchas de las personas que nos encontramos. Ellos procuran que todos sean atendidos. ¿Mi último consejo? ¡HÁGALO! ¡Es una increíble experiencia única en la vida!” ■

W

hat began as a personal challenge recently became a record setting milestone for Lagunas resident Caryn Steele. After hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain last year, Caryn decided to attempt the recently established El Camino de Costa Rica (a challenging march from the Caribbean over the mountains to the Pacific). At this point, she didn’t realize she might be the first woman ever to complete the sixteen day hike in a continuous trek, in addition to knocking four days off by doing it in twelve!

Compared to Caryn and her husband, Keith’s, 800 km trek in Spain last year, the 280 km el Camino de Costa Rica might sound easier. Except for the fact that, unlike the wide and well-marked Santiago, the trail here is often a narrow path up and down steep mountains, accessible only with a guide with a strong arm, and a sharp machete.

The association sponsoring the hike arranges lodging and food stops along the trail with local residents. Hikers get to not only see Costa Rica in a way rarely seen by outsiders but they get to enjoy the warmth of Tico hospitality in an intimate and unique way.

Asked about her preparations for the trek, Caryn said: “Eventually, your training should include steep ascents and descents, and in the full sun. Not particularly fun, but necessary!” She went on to say that what convinced her to hike the Camino was wanting “to be a part of what I was experiencing. It just felt different. I was more relaxed and wide-eyed with everything new I was seeing!” When asked about the staff provided by the El Camino de Costa Rica Association, she said, “The guides are very knowledgeable about the Camino and personally know many of the people we met. They make sure everyone is taken care of. My final advice? DO IT! It is an incredible once in a lifetime experience”! ■

Su Seguridad en la Playa

E

n los últimos 20 años he escuchado las mismas historias una y otra vez. Aquí está la primera: “Cerré el auto y escondí mi bolso debajo del asiento, pero cuando regresé, una de las puertas estaba abierta y han robado todo que estaba adentro. Me había ido solo por diez minutos.

No necesito decirles en qué playas se llevan a cabo estos eventos porque puede suceder en CUALQUIER PARTE. Y no solo en Costa Rica. Pero por alguna razón, la gente baja la guardia cuando visita nuestras playas. Incluso les puede suceder a los expatriados después de algunos años de vivir aquí y

también a los ticos.

Para que estos crímenes dejen de producirse, se necesitará una solución a nivel nacional, por lo que, a corto plazo, ¿nos centraremos en cómo protegernos a nosotros y como proteger nuestros bienes? # 1 - ¡No deje nada dentro de su carro que luzca valioso! Nada de cables, gafas de sol, ropa o bolsos de lujo y definitivamente ninguna maleta. Si tiene que dejar algo, colóquelo debajo de la alfombra del piso u ocúltelo en algún lugar donde se lleve más tiempo en encontrarlo. A los ladrones no les gusta perder el tiempo buscando por todos lados.

También puede ensuciar su auto de alquiler y ponerle una etiqueta o dos para que no se vea tan obviamente turístico.

En algunas playas, usted puede estacionar su auto junto a una familia que está pasando el rato y pedirles que lo vigilen, o preguntar cuánto tiempo estarán allí. Saber algo de español ayuda, pero solo decir “Hola” creará un poco de confianza y amistad. ■

Safety on the Beach

ver the last 20 years, I’ve heard the same stories multiple times. Here is the first one “I locked up the car and hid my bag under the seat. But when I came back, one of the doors was open and they took everything inside. I was gone only ten minutes.”

I do not need to tell you which beaches these events took place on because it happens EVERYWHERE. And not just in Costa Rica. But for some reason people let their guards down when visiting the pristine beaches here. This can happen to expats even after a few years of living here as well as Ticos.

To get these crimes to stop happening, it will take a countrywide solution. But in the short-term let’s focus on how to protect yourself and your items.

#1 - Do not leave anything inside your car that looks valuable!

No cables, sunglasses, fancy clothes or bags – and definitely no suitcases. If you have to leave something, put it under the floor mat or hide it somewhere where it would take a longer time to find. Thieves don’t want to stick around to search around. Also get your car rental dirty and put a sticker or two on it so it doesn’t look so blatantly touristy. On some beaches you can park next to a family hanging out by their car and ask them to keep an eye on it, or ask how long they will be there. Knowing Spanish helps, but even just saying “Hola” will build up a little trust and friendship. ■

Los secretos de los tiburones

L

a Reserva Biológica Isla del Caño es uno de los ambientes más biodiversos del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica; ofrece refugio a tiburones y rayas como el tiburón punta blanca (Triaenodon obesus), tiburón nodriza (Ginglymostoma unami), raya látigo (Hypanus longus), raya diablo (Mobula japanica), raya redonda (Urobatis pardalis), manta raya (Mobula birostris) y otras. La presencia de grandes depredadores juega un papel muy importante en los ecosistemas controlando las poblaciones de sus presas mediante competencia o depredación. Sin embargo, estos peces de esqueleto cartilaginoso están muy amenazados por los efectos de la pesca

ilegal y la sobrepesca, desencadenando efectos negativos en todo el ecosistema.

A pesar de lo carismáticas que son muchas especies de tiburones y rayas se sabe muy poco sobre ellas. La falta de información ecológica básica representa un impedimento para lograr su protección. El proyecto “La Vida Secreta de los Tiburones”, un proyecto liderado por los biólogos Mario Espinoza y Marta Cambra del Centro de Investigación en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (CIMAR) de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) pretende responder preguntas importantes y fortalecer las medidas de manejo y conservación para tiburones y rayas en la Isla del Caño y otras Áreas Marinas Protegidas de Costa Rica. Algunas de las preguntas son: (1) ¿En qué estado se encuentran las poblaciones de tiburones y rayas?; (2) ¿Cuáles son los sitios con mayor abundancia y diversidad de especies?; (3) ¿Qué factores afectan a la distribución y abundancia de las especies?; (4) ¿Pueden las Áreas Marinas Protegidas de Costa Rica beneficiar a los tiburones y rayas?

El proyecto utiliza cámaras remotas submarinas con carnada para estudiar aspectos del comportamiento de tiburones y rayas. Además el olor de la carnada atrae a otras especies que serían difíciles de detectar. En Costa Rica es la primera vez que se utiliza esta novedosa técnica. Los biólogos capacitan a los guarda parques de la Isla del Caño y otras Áreas Marinas Protegidas para que en un futuro puedan darle continuidad al monitoreo. ■

he Isla del Caño Biological Reserve is one of the most biodiverse environments in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. it offers refuge to sharks and rays such as the white tip shark (Triaenodon obesus), the nurse shark, the whip ray (Hypanus longus), the devil ray (Mobula japanica), the round ray (Urobatis pardalis), the stingray (Mobula birostris) and others. The presence of large predators plays a very important role in the ecosystems controlling the populations of their prey through competition or predation. However, these cartilaginous skeleton fish are very threatened by the effects of illegal fishing, and overfishing, triggering negative effects throughout the ecosystem.

Despite there being many species of sharks and rays, very little is known about them. The lack of basic ecological information represents an impediment to their protection. The project “The Secret Life of the Sharks”, a project led by biologists Mario Espinoza and Marta Cambra of the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), aims to answer important questions and strengthen management and conservation measures for sharks and rays around Caño Island and other Marine Protected Areas of Costa Rica. Some of the questions are: (1) In what condition are shark and ray populations? (2) What are the sites with the greatest abundance and diversity of species? (3) What factors affect the distribution and abundance of the species? (4) Can Costa Rica´s Protected Areas benefit sharks and rays?

The project uses remote underwater cameras with bait to study aspects of the behavior of sharks and rays. In addition, the smell of the bait attracts other species that would be difficult to detect. This is the first time that this innovative technique is used in Costa Rica. Park rangers of Isla del Caño, and other Marine Protected Areas, are trained by biologists in order for monitoring to continue. ■

Las Cotingas ~ Del Blanco al Azul

E

ntre las aves hermosas en Costa Rica, las cotingas merecen el apelativo de joyas del Pacífico Sur. Su nombre proviene del término tupí-guaraní Catingá el cual era utilizado para referirse a las aves que por sus colores brillaban en el bosque. Se denominan Cotingas a una familia de aves de la que Costa Rica cuenta con ocho especies de las cuales cuatro están presentes en el Pacífico, destacando la cotinga turquesa, la amenazada cotinga piquiamarilla y el pájaro campana.

Esta familia de aves presenta elaborados comportamientos de cortejo denominados leks, en el que varios machos, con el fin de atraer a las hembras, ocupan perchas altas desde las cuales emiten sonidos y se exhiben

ante las hembras bajo el radiante sol que hace brillar su plumaje con diferentes tonalidades debido al pigmento estructural que les da color. En el caso del color azul de la cotinga turquesa, su pigmento es semejante al de las alas de las mariposas morpho, los quetzales, trogones y muchos colibríes, que cambian de color en función de la incidencia de los rayos del sol, exhibiendo tonos iridiscentes.

Las cotingas turquesas con sus brillantes colores son jardineras de dosel arbóreo y dispersoras de semillas.

Solo se encuentran en el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica y Oeste de Panamá, por lo que se estima menor a 7000 individuos y decreciente, por lo que se considera vulnerable a la extinción. El

macho de cotinga turquesa presenta una espectacular coloración azul y púrpura bastante distintiva mientras que la hembra es de tonos cafés. Se les ha observado silbando y haciendo ruido con los cañones de sus plumas alares más externas. Sus nidos son una incógnita, pues anidan entre 9 y 11 metros de altura y muy difíciles de detectar.

Si usted tiene cotingas en su jardín, considérese afortunado, su presencia indica calidad del bosque. Deje crecer los guarumos y plante fosforillos.

A

mong the beautiful birds in Costa Rica, the cotingas deserve the name of South Pacific jewels. Their name derives from the term tupí-guaraní Catingá which was used to refer to the birds that by their colors shone in the forest. Cotingas belong to a family of birds of which Costa Rica has eight species, four of which are present in the Pacific, emphasizing the turquoise cotinga, the threatened Yellowbilled cotinga and the Three-wattled bellbird.

This family of birds presents elaborate courtship behaviors called leks, in which several males, in order to attract the females, occupy high perches from which they emit sounds, and exhibit themselves to the females under the radiant sun that makes their plumage shine with different shades due to the structural pigment that gives them color. In the case of the blue color of the turquoise cotinga, its pigment is similar to that of the wings of morpho butterflies, quetzals, trogons and many hummingbirds, which change color depending on

the incidence of the sun’s rays, exhibiting iridescent tones.

The turquoise cotingas with their bright colors are arboreal canopy planters and seed dispersers. Only found in the South Pacific of Costa Rica and West of Panama, its population is decreasing and it is estimated that there are less than 7,000 individuals, so it is considered vulnerable to extinction. The male of the turquoise cotinga presents a spectacular blue and purple coloration quite distinctive while the female has brown tones. They have been observed whistling and making noise with the cannons of their outermost wing feathers.

Their nests have not been discovered since they are between 9 and 11 meters high and very difficult to detect.

Historias pintadas con luz

U

n país sin relatos visuales es un pueblo sin historia.

Desde George Melies, uno de los primeros narradores visuales, hasta las modernas industrias fílmicas, entre las cuales comienza a figurar la costarricense, el séptimo arte se consolida en la sociedad no solo como una forma de entretenimiento o una expresión artística, sino también como una identificación, un extracto, en ocasiones idealizado y en otras fiel a la realidad cultural de un pueblo.

Costa Rica cuenta con un bagaje en la historia cinematográfica contemporánea. Joven en tiempo, pero rico y curioso en contenido, el cual es valioso para analizar nuestra propia cultura y de paso escribir nuevas historias para contar al mundo.

Este año el Proyecto Cultural Trincheras hace una importante alianza con el Centro Costarricense de Producción Cinematográfica, ente encargado de promover la actividad audiovisual en nuestro país.

El Programa Preámbulo Cine es uno de los que tiene el Centro. Trincheras traerá este programa a Pérez Zeledón. Todos los últimos jueves del mes a las 7pm se proyectarán películas facilitadas por el Centro de Cine. Este año Preámbulo Gira trabajará con áreas temáticas en todas sus presentaciones, se iniciará con Adultez Mayor; el jueves 28 de febrero se proyectará el filme argentino Elsa y Fred. ara mí el arte es la vía del conocimiento acerca de uno mismo, de auto observación para acceder a un nivel de consciencia superior en donde al ser ya no le sucede, ni es llevado de aquí para allá por las circunstancias. Es un nivel de comprensión en donde entendemos que conocer no es igual a saber.

La mayor inspiración en mi obra es la Filosofía de la Superación Personal, en donde la fe, la esperanza y el amor son y serán las máximas que impulsan este quehacer; mi propuesta es transmitir un mensaje propio para quien se identifique con mi trabajo.

Nunca he recibido lección en escuela alguna, por lo cual no tengo apegos por estilo o técnica en particular. Al comprender que en el arte la motivación no es lo que hace otro artista; sino como lo hace para no hacerlo como tal.

Soy nativo de San Ramón de Alajuela, empírico y ecléctico por naturaleza y con 40 años de experiencia.

Mis referentes son Pitágoras y Jesús. De ahí se inspira el logo de La Casa del Artista, un gallo rojo; que significa: el que anuncia el nacimiento de la luz e implica una tradición filosófica que procura transmitir nuestros saberes.

F

or me, art is the way to get to know oneself, by selfobservation to access a higher level of consciousness where being no longer occurs, nor is it carried from here to there by circumstances.

It is a level of understanding where we realize that knowing is not the same as comprehending.

The greatest inspiration in my work is the Philosophy of Personal Growth, where faith, hope, and love are and will be the maxims that drive the task. My purpose is to convey a message of my own to those who identify with my work.

I have never received a lesson at any school, for this reason I am not attached to any particular style or technique. By understanding that in art, motivation is not what another artist does; but as he envisions it.

Born in San Ramón de Alajuela I am empirical and eclectic by nature, and have 40 years of experience.

I am the creator and founder of the drawing and painting programs for the National Institute of Learning. I am

recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a Cultural Promoter and instructor.

I have founded several associations of artisans and peasants and am currently the president of the National Association of Costa Rican Entrepreneurs.

Several years ago, I founded La Casa del Artista Barú; whose main objective is the dissemination and promotion of the artistic and artisanal product actually

made in Costa Rica.

For me, Art is the intrinsic philosophical aspect of plastic expression, whether the practitioner understands it or not, since there is a great difference between being a painter and being an artist. My references are Pythagoras and Jesus. This was the inspiration for the logo of La Casa del Artista, a red rooster; which means: he who announces the birth of light and implies a philosophical tradition that seeks to transmit our knowledge.

Un habitat como en el Amazonas

E

n el Parque Reptilandia, siempre estamos mejorando los recintos para nuestros animales. Mediante la literatura y fotografías disponibles se hace un estudio del hábitat de las especies. A veces, las fotografías son de mi propia cartera, otras veces de libros o de Internet. Esta vez proporcionamos un nuevo hábitat para nuestros lagartos de caimán (Dracaena guianensis). Recientemente, dividimos una área de exposición en dos. Una parte del recinto es para que los bebés crezcan hasta que sean lo suficientemente grandes para ser trasladados a otro lugar. Cada año criamos estas hermosas lagartijas, para que así los jóvenes puedan disfrutar de un ambiente lo más natural. El público puede disfrutar de los pequeños tomando sol o nadando en su piscina privada con agua natural. El recinto al lado muestra lagartos caimán adultos. Estas lagartijas disfrutan de la compañía de algunas tortugas de agua dulce. También construimos un montículo de termitas falso como los que se pueden ver en el Amazonas. Como se sabe que los lagartos de Caimán salvajes depositan sus huevos en éstos, proporcionamos uno para nuestros animales cautivos. Nuestro objetivo en Reptilandia es copiar, lo más parecido posible, el hábitat natural de nuestros amados reptiles. Al hacer esto, estimulamos el comportamiento natural de los animales. Los escondites son muy importantes para reducir el estrés. El truco es colocarlos de manera que aún así el público pueda observar al animal. La salud de los animales es una prioridad absoluta. Las plantas y los troncos huecos sirven como escondites y también proporcionan sombra. Los reptiles son animales ectotérmicos, lo que significa que obtienen su temperatura corporal del ambiente circundante. Por lo tanto, poder calentarse al sol es tan importante como refrescarse en la sombra. Venga a visitarnos y observe cómo cuan rapidamente y saludables crecen nuestros reptiles. ■

A

t Parque Reptilandia, we are always improving the enclosures for our animals. A study is made of the habitat of the concerning species by available literature and photographs. Sometimes the photographs are from my own portfolio, other times from books or the internet. This time we provided a new habitat for our caiman lizards (Dracaena guianensis). Recently, we split an existing exhibit in two. One part of the enclosure is for the babies to grow until they are big enough to be moved to another place. Every year we breed these gorgeous lizards, so this way the youngsters can enjoy a natural setup.

The public can also enjoy the little ones sunning themselves or taking a swim in their private pool with running waternat. The enclosure next to it displays adult caiman lizards. These lizards enjoy the company of some freshwater turtles. We also built a fake termite mound like the ones that can be seen in the Amazon. Since wild Caiman lizards are known to deposit their eggs in these, we provided one for our captive animals. Our goal at Reptilandia is to copy, as close as possible, the natural habitat of our beloved reptiles. By doing this, we stimulate the natural behavior of the specific animals. Hiding places are very important for reducing stress. The trick is to place them in a way that the public still can spot the animal. The health of the animals is a top priority. Plants and hollow logs serve as hideouts but also provide shade. Reptiles are ectothermic animals, meaning that they get their body temperature from the surrounding environment. So being able to warm up in the sun, is as important as cooling off in the shade. Come for a visit and watch our reptiles flourish and grow. â–

Un árbol bajo y gordo con raíces grandísimas “Este árbol es famoso”, declaró el profesor de la Universidad de Costa Rica. «No hay otro igual en todo el país”. El árbol al que se refería es un chilamate (Ficus tonduzii). Su foto apareció en la portada de The Tico Times, la portada de la sección de turismo de La Nación y en muchos más periódicos y revistas. A unos 15 metros (49 pies), el Chilamate no es muy alto y, aunque es bastante grueso, tenemos muchos otros árboles que son más grandes en circunferencia. Lo que lo distingue son las raíces. Aunque muchas especies de árboles tienen raíces grandes de soporte llamado gambas, las del chilamate de Hacienda Barú son enormes. El más alto tiene 2.37 metros de altura (7 pies y 10 pulgadas).

Cuando florece y fructifica, el Chilamate es como un imán para la vida silvestre de todo tipo. Unas abejas pequeñas, sin aguijón, polinizan las flores y son consumidas por numerosas especies de aves. Muchos otros tipos de aves, así como los murciélagos, monos y pizotes comen los pequeños higos redondos directamente de las frondosas ramas. Los que caen al suelo son rápidamente recogidos por tepezcuintles,

guatusas, y saínos. Todas estas aves y mamíferos juegan un papel importante en la dispersión de las semillas. Las semillas germinan, normalmente en un lugar con bastante sol y el árbol crece rápidamente llegando a su altura máxima en un par de décadas.

Algunas personas han estimado que el Chilamate de Hacienda Barú tiene hasta 300 años. No soy un botánico, pero dudo seriamente la validez de esa estimación. Daniel Valverde vio por primera vez al chilamate a mediados de la década de los 50, cuando vivía en Hacienda Barù. En ese momento era mucho más pequeño que hoy y crecía rápidamente. Cuando yo lo vi por primera vez en 1972, era un árbol joven y vigoroso. En ese momento las gambas eran ligeramente más altas que mi rodilla. El árbol no aumentó en altura, pero las raíces crecieron durante los siguientes 20 años hasta que alcanzaron mi barbilla y desde principios de este siglo, se han disparado hasta su tamaño actual. Todos los que hemos conocido el famoso árbol durante varios años estamos de acuerdo en que probablemente tenga alrededor de 80 años. ■

When in bloom and fruiting, the chilamate is like a magnet for wildlife of all kinds. Small, stingless bees pollinate the flowers and are themselves consumed by numerous species of birds. Many other kinds of birds, as well as bats, monkeys and coatis eat the small round figs directly from the leafy boughs. Those that fall on the ground are quickly picked up by

pacas, agoutis and peccary. All of these birds and mammals play an important role by dispersing the seeds in their feces.

The seeds germinate, usually in a sunny place, and the tree grows rapidly, reaching its full height in a couple of decades.

Some people have estimated the Hacienda Barú Chilamate to be as much as 300 years old. I am not a botanist, but I seriously doubt the validity of that estimate. Daniel Valverde first saw the chilamate in the mid-1950s when he lived on Hacienda Barù. At that time, it was much smaller than today and growing rapidly. When I first saw it in 1972, it was a young vigorous tree. It was about its present height, and the buttress roots were only slightly higher than my knee.

Though the tree remained the same height, the roots grew during the next 20 years until they reached my chin and, since the turn of the century, have shot up to their present size. All of us, who have known the famous tree for a number of years, agree that it is probably around 80. ■

n enero del 2019 alcanzamos un hito importante: la quilla ha sido oficialmente colocada, atornillada y asegurada. Ha sido un momento muy emocionante que pasará a la historia de la Ceiba. Todo el arduo trabajo preparatorio de los años anteriores ha convergido en este momento: a medida que se coloca la quilla, nace la nave.

Hace un año, estas maderas gigantescas yacían ásperas y enteras en el piso del astillero, la motosierra de Alaska rasgaba constantemente las densas fibras de la dura madera.

Hoy en día, estas piezas de quilla cuidadosamente cortadas se han emparejado, colocado en posición y atornillado, marcando el primer día de la construcción de Ceiba. Desde la oficina de la casa del árbol en el Golfo de Nicoya, podemos ver toda la longitud del Tamarindo del Monte (Dialium Guianese) extendiéndose a la altura de la cabeza a través de bloques de quilla montados. Ceiba ~ The Keel has been laid

I

n January 2019 we reached an important milestone - the keel has officially been laid, bolted and secured down. This has been a hugely exciting moment that will go down in the history of Ceiba. All the preparatory hard work of the preceding years has converged to this moment: as the keel is laid, the ship is born.

A year ago, these giant timbers where lying rough and whole on the shipyard floor, the Alaskan chainsaw steadily ripping through the dense ironwood fibers. Today, these neatly-cut keel pieces have been tarred-up, slotted into position and bolted down, marking the first day of Ceiba’s construction. From the treehouse office on the Golfo de Nicoya, we can see the full length of Tamarindo del Monte (Dialium Guianese) stretching out at headheight across mounted keel blocks. Its size and scale finally visible in reality as the blue of the Pacific softly laps through bright green mangroves behind.

Looking into the next few months, visions are filled with frames, sticking bare and rib-like into the endless blue sky. Currently, we are constructing the staging around the keel to support this next part of the building phase, as the first frames are cut and planned to shape directly intow. This is being done using predominantly cypress wood that has been responsibly-harvested from Monteverde; a part of 400 trees generously donated to the project. These non-native cypresses have been milled-up by one of our newest machines, the trusty WoodMizer. The machine is in action regularly, cutting planks for the small wooden boat constructions, as well as further cross-beams and posts for the staging. ‘Trunnel’ stock is also beginning to be cut up, and as the framing stage-floor continues to be hammered into place, parts of the team are beginning to put the first frames together. ■

Cleaning the Canton of Osa

he volunteers who participated in the recent Beach Cleanups along Costa Ballena enthusiastically agreed that they were incredibly interesting actions: “We collaborated with a meritorious initiative, met new beaches and roads, made friends and enjoyed delicious meals that were offered to us in the refreshment points.”

De esta forma, los escolares aprenden sobre compostaje, mejorar la fertilidad de la tierra, cuido de las plantas y mucho más. Además se realizan actividades educativas sobre el valor agregado que se le puede dar a los productos, por ejemplo, el año pasado los escolares aprendieron a hacer pesto, utilizando la albahaca del `m]jlg& Lg\g ]klg [gf mfY Zm]fY \gkak de arte y diversión.

a comunidad está apreciando enormemente el dedicado aporte de Beth Kqdn]j hYjY e]bgjYj dYk [aj[mfklYfcias de los Guardavidas de Costa Ballena, increíbles jóvenes que previenen muertes por asfixia de bañistas en tres playas a lo largo de ella.

Beth y su esposo, Gene, son de California, donde solían producir aceite de oliva virgen ]pljY Çfg& =f km hY k ]klm\a qg_Y dg [mYd ]k parte de su equipaje desde entonces. =f ]d *()*$ :]l` nakal ?mYfY[Ykl] hgj hjamera vez y regresó con su esposo cuatro meses después para su cumpleaños. Luego recorrieron todo el camino a lo largo de la costa hasta que finalmente se detuvieron en un hotel con el nombre sugestivo de Cuna del Ángel. “Aquí sentí por primera vez la picadura ]f]j_]larYfl] \] mf ¾Za[`g¿ \] ;gklY Ja[Y& AfklYfl~f]Ye]fl] supimos que estaríamos viviendo en esta parte del mundo”.

Beth se enteró de que este grupo que trabaja muy duro no estaba recibiendo apoyo oficial y que sus salarios y transporte son difíciles de mantener ya que están siendo financiados por el sector privado. Incluso ]d Emfa[ahag \] GK9 fg `Y hg\a\g hYljg[anar a dos salvavidas de manera estable. Al principio, ella y un grupo de amigos prepararon almuerzos y los llevaron a la playa.

Beth and her husband, Gene, are from California where they mk]\ lg hjg\m[] Çf] ]pljY naj_af gdan] gad& K`] ^]dl l`] f]]\ lg study yoga and transfer her newly acquired insights to more h]ghd]& Kg$ qg_Y `Yk Z]]f af `]j dm__Y_] ]n]j kaf[]& In 2012, Beth first visited Guanacaste and returned with `]j `mkZYf\ ^gmj egfl`k dYl]j ^gj `]j Zajl`\Yq& L`]f l`]q travelled all the way along the coast until finally stopping at a hotel with the invoking name of Cuna del Angel. “Here I felt ^gj l`] Çjkl lae] l`] ]f]j_araf_ Zal] g^ l`] ;gklY Ja[Y Zm_& We instantly knew that we would be living in this part of the world.” In the beginning of 2015, once completely settled

near to Uvita, they were introduced to people like Nate and :]f$ H]jjq ?dY\klgf]$ :jaYf Fa[]$ Kl]n] >]j_mk% Ydd g^ l`]k] amazing youngsters- the Costa Ballena Lifeguards who are preventing drowning at three beaches along Costa Ballena. :]l` d]Yjf]\ l`Yl l`ak `Yj\%ogjcaf_ _jgmh \a\f¢l j][]an] Yfq official support, and that their salaries and transportation o]j] hjanYl]dq ^mf\]\$ Yf\ \a^Ç[mdl lg c]]h mh oal`& =n]f l`] Emfa[ahYdalq g^ GK9 oYk mfYZd] lg khgfkgj log da^]_mYj\k on a fixed basis. In the beginning, she and a group of friends cooked lunch and delivered it to the beach. Now, in collaboration with the support team, she coordinated the “lunchguards” restaurants, one cooking for each day, a service greatly appreciated by the guys on the tower.

uchos de los que han vivido en el área de Costa Ballena conocían a Shawnell Parker como la "cara visible" de DAWG, durante más de 11 años sus esfuerzos incansables hicieron de la organización una parte importante de la comunidad de Costa Ballena. Cuando falleció inesperadamente el otoño pasado, muchas personas preguntaron qué pasará con DAWG. ¿Continuará? ¡Estamos orgullosos de anunciar que el legado de Shawnell continuará! Esto no se podría hacer sin la dedicación de los miembros de la junta directiva, los muchos voluntarios, las familias de acogida y los donantes fieles.

DAWG se fundó en el 2007, inicialmente se centró en las clínicas de esterilización y castración gratuitas o de bajo costo. ¡DAWG ahora realiza más de 300 operaciones por año! The Legacy Continues

any who have lived in the Costa Ballena area knew Shawnell Parker as the “visible face” of DAWG for over 11 years and her tireless efforts made DAWG an important part of the Costa Ballena community. When she passed away unexpectedly last fall, many people asked what will happen to DAWG? Will it continue?

We are proud to announce that Shawnell’s legacy will continue! This could not be done without the dedication of DAWG’s board members, the many volunteers, foster families, and our faithful donors.

DAWG was founded in 2007 and initially focused efforts on free and low cost spay and neuter clinics. DAWG now does over 300 operations per year! DAWG’s efforts include rescues and has placed almost 1500 animals in good homes.

We strive to develop a culture of understanding, concern and care for domestic animals through our work.

Our library volunteers are the best organizers ever! The library is located on the 3rd floor of Centro Veterinario Costa Ballena in Uvita and has the same opening hours as Hertz Car Rental.

ace seis meses dejé mi país de origen Alemania para descubrir Centroamérica. Mi viaje comenzó en Costa Rica con una pasantía en la revista Ballena Tales donde trabajé durante 3 meses.

Después de eso, viajé a Guatemala, ahí visité las ruinas de los Mayas, tomé un colorido “chicken bus - bus de pollos” y caminé por las calles empedradas de Antigua. El siguiente destino fue Belice y obtuve mi licencia de buceo en la segunda barrera de coral más grande del mundo. Seguí mi viajé hacia el norte a México para explorar los «cenotes» místicos (increíbles pozos subterráneos naturales) en la península de Yucatán.

Lo pasé de maravilla, pero aún faltaba una experiencia: el Festival Envision en Uvita. Así que viajé de regreso a Costa Rica donde me esperaban cuatro días inolvidables. Cuando llegué al sitio del Festival me abrumaron las impresiones. Había una colorida mezcla de arte, música y personas de diferentes culturas. El evento se lleva a cabo en una antigua hacienda en la selva colindando con el Océano Pacífico. Los cuatro escenarios decorados con mucha imaginación presentaron todo género de música. Había una impresionante galería de arte y salones donde se podía tomar té, relajarse y conversar.

Durante el día se ofrecieron talleres sobre yoga, danza estética y meditación. En el taller de danza estética aprendí a expresar mis sentimientos a través de movimientos. Fue increíble ver a la gente bailando en armonía con su entorno y con ellos mismos. Otro punto culminante fue una ceremonia de cacao con chamanes, que me dio bastante energía para disfrutar de la estimulante mezcla de música hasta el amanecer. Todos se reunieron en la playa para celebrar la salida del sol y el despertar de la naturaleza. Obtuve mucha inspiración en el Festival y aprendí sobre espiritualidad, salud y estrategias regenerativas.

Envision es una mezcla perfecta de arte, música y educación. ¡No podría imaginar un mejor final para mi viaje por Centroamérica! ■

Envision ~ Four Unforgettable Days

S

ix months ago I left my home country, Germany, to discover Central America. My journey started in Costa Rica with an internship at the Ballena Tales Magazine where I worked for 3 months. After that I traveled to Guatemala, where I visited the ruins of the Mayas, took a ride in a colorful “chicken bus,” and strolled through Antigua´s cobblestone streets. My next destination was Belize where I achieved my diving license at the world’s second largest barrier reef. Then I traveled north to Mexico to explore the mystical “cenotes” (amazing natural underground pits) in the Peninsula of Yucatan.

I had an amazing time but one experience was still missing: The Envision Festival in Uvita. So I traveled back to where my journey started and four unforgettable days were waiting for me. When I arrived at the Festival site, I was overwhelmed by impressions. There was a colorful mix of art, music, and people from different cultures. The event took place in a former ranch in the jungle which meets the Pacific Ocean.

The four different scenarios decorated with great imagination presented all kinds of music. There was an impressive art gallery and lounges where you could drink tea, relax and have some good conversation.

During the day, workshops about Yoga, aesthetic dance, and Meditation were offered. In the aesthetic dance workshop, I learned to express my feelings through movements. It was amazing to see people dancing in harmony with their environment and with themselves. Another highlight was a shaman cacao ceremony which gave me enough energy to enjoy the stimulating mix of music until the daybreak.

Everybody got together at the beach to celebrate the sunrise and nature’s awakening. I gained a lot of inspiration at the Festival and learned about spirituality, health and regenerative strategies. Envision is the perfect blend of art, music and education. I could not imagine a better ending of my journey throughout Central America! ■

Agrega Natalia: «Recibí una licenciatura en administración hotelera e inicié mi carrera en Marriott International en Costa Rica. Tuve una capacitación avanzada en el Desert Springs Resort en Palm Springs, California. No fue hasta más tarde que encontré mi vocación: la organización de eventos sociales y bodas. Completé el Programa Certificado de Organización de Bodas Marriot en el 2004.”

hen Scott Stephens founded Liquid Blue in 1996, his first hire was guitarist Michael Vangerov, who had recently departed from Elektra recording artist Chain Reaction. What started as a four-piece San Diego bar band grew to a 12-member international touring act that eventually traveled to 120 countries, released sixteen albums (including a Billboard hit single), and garnered a Guinness World Record.

After 20 years of touring the world with Liquid Blue, and establishing a home base and headquarters in Ocean Beach, California, Scott decided to replace Michael and himself with younger performers that could continue the high-energy performance level that the band had become known for. When it became too difficult to maintain business affairs with the 16-hour time difference between Australia and California, the two came to Central America to check out surf locations in Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica. Costa Rica won this search and Scott, with his partner Selina, and his colleague Michael, settled in their new-found home in Uvita.

The former Liquid Blue stars continue to perform here in Costa Rica as a duo under the name “Out of the Blue.” You can catch them performing around town at the best live music venues. Megadosis de Vitamina C

L

a hipótesis del uso de vitamina C para el tratamiento del cáncer surgió por primera vez en los años 50. Esta terapia con dosis elevadas de vitamina C intravenosa, llegó a revelarse a finales de los años 70 por distinguidos doctores que empezaron a estudiarla y utilizarla.

Científicos observaron que el tratamiento con Vitamina C intravenosa de pacientes en fase terminal, seguido de una suplementación oral, lograba tiempos de supervivencia cuatro veces mayor a los no tratados con dicha vitamina, a partir de esto la mayoría de las investigaciones se han centrado en el tratamiento del cáncer con altas dosis de Vitamina C Intravenosa.

La vitamina C (ascorbato, ácido ascórbico) es un ácido orgánico proveniente del azúcar. Al ser soluble en agua es transportada por la sangre y se encuentra en todas las células del cuerpo, cualquier exceso se excreta sin producir daño.

rápida para obtener concentraciones mayores en la sangre.

Por la vía oral no se pueden consumir elevadas dosis por los efectos gástricos indeseados y su absorción puede ser menos provechosa. Este nutriente se encuentra en alimentos como cítricos, papayas, chiles, brócoli, guayaba y fresas.

Protege las células contra la oxidación y daño de los radicales libres, resguarda los tejidos que recubren los órganos internos, la piel y los ojos, de los efectos negativos de los compuestos que se adquieren, ya sea por la mala alimentación, el consumo de sustancias químicas y alcohol o por efectos ambientales como la contaminación y los rayos directos del sol. Por otra parte, el Ácido Ascórbico participa en la función orgánica de la producción de colágeno y por ende, en el fortalecimiento de las uñas, el cabello y rápida cicatrización de las heridas. Un mejor funcionamiento del sistema inmunológico, que protege al cuerpo de virus, infecciones y varias enfermedades y la absorción de hierro, también están relacionados con el consumo de vitamina C. ■

he hypothesis of the use of vitamin C for cancer treatment arose for the first time in the 50s. This therapy with high doses of intravenous vitamin C, came to be revealed at the end of the 70s by distinguished doctors who began to study and use it.

Scientists observed that the treatment with intravenous vitamin C of patients in terminal phase, followed by an oral supplementation, achieved survival times four times greater than those not treated with this vitamin. From then on, most research focused on cancer treatment with high doses of intravenous Vitamin C. Vitamin C (ascorbate, ascorbic acid) is an organic acid derived from sugar. Being soluble in water it is transported by the blood and is found in all cells of the body, any excess being excreted without causing damage. It can be consumed orally (food, vitamin supplements) or intravenously, which is the fastest way to obtain higher concentrations in the blood.

High doses cannot be consumed orally due to the undesired gastric effects and their absorption may be less effective.

This nutrient is found in foods such as citrus fruits, papayas, peppers, broccoli, guava and strawberries. They protect the cells against oxidation and the damage of free radicals, the tissues lining the internal organs, skin and eyes, the negative effects of the ingestion of unhealthy products, either by poor diet, consumption of chemical substances, alcohol or against environmental effects such as pollution and direct sunlight. On the other hand, Ascorbic Acid participates in the organic function of collagen production and, therefore, in the strengthening of nails, hair and rapid healing of wounds.

As well it results in the better functioning of the immune system, which protects the body from viruses, infections and various diseases and the absorption of iron, are also related to the consumption of vitamin C. ■

SafeBeach ofrece patrullas de prevención de delitos. Equipos de jóvenes, formados por la policía y los guardavidas, patrullan nuestras

playas y puntos de peligro en la ciudad. Durante los más de seis meses de operaciones, cero delitos se perpetraron en los lugares donde se realizaron estos patrullajes.

Ojos en la Calle es una aplicación gratuita para teléfonos inteligentes que permite que cualquier persona pueda denunciar delitos incidentes y comportamientos sospechosos de forma anónima. En casos de emergencia, la aplicación notifica a la policía local.

Con sus magníficas cavernas, esta playa evoca un fuerte sentimiento por la naturaleza y la conservación.

El valor cultural y biológico de Playa Tortuga proviene de su versatilidad como espacio de descanso y recreo para vecinos y turistas, así como espacio natural de investigación y conservación biológica. Bajo la tutela de la Reserva Biológica Playa Tortuga, la playa funciona como hábitat y espacio de anidación para distintas especies de tortugas marinas como la Lora (Lepi-

dochelys olivácea), Carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), Verde (Chelonia midas) y la gran Baula (Dermochelys coreacea).

especiales de carne y muchas delicias, además de los productos que se espera encontrar en una tienda de comestibles. La consulta médica de la Dra. Mariam Vargas es otra adición vital. Puede obtener su chequeo general de salud y en el consultorio se practican cirugías menores, nebulizaciones e inyecciones.

La Farmacia y Microbiótica Ibarra es un servicio muy conveniente donde puede comprar los medicamentos recetados. ¡Durante 15 años la familia Ibarra ha estado brindando un excelente servicio en la Zona Sur! Ellos cuidan mucho a sus clientes y están entusiasmados de poder servirles en Ojochal.

L

a hermosa comunidad de Dos Brazos de Río Tigre es un pequeño pueblo abrazado por los bosques del Parque Nacional Corcovado y la Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce, es un lugar donde la conciencia ambiental y el desarrollo sostenible crecen cada día más. Para conocer la historia de este pueblo hay que ir a visitarlo. Al lado de una persona local usted podrá entender por qué es una joya secreta de la Península de Osa. Ni una imagen, ni mil palabras pueden describir las bellezas de este pequeño paraíso. Podemos adelantarle que en Dos Brazos del Río Tigre existe un grupo de personas que se dedican al monitoreo de fauna, con el fin de conocer en detalle la biodiversidad que este sitio alberga y complementar los esfuerzos de turismo rural comunitario que aquí se realizan.

ma. El interés por conocer sobre la historia natural de estos animales nació de los mismos vecinos, quienes han observado el declive de las poblaciones de camarón en sus ríos, posiblemente producto de las malas prácticas que algunas personas realizan para extraer los camarones.

Lo que más sorprendió al grupo fue que la magnitud del nefasto efecto de los venenos. Estos no solo matan a los camarones, sino también toda la vida que alberga un río - insectos, cangrejos, peces, incluso afecta a las nutrias y otros animales, que se alimentan de animales envenenados. Finalmente afecta a personas que consumen camarones provenientes de este tipo de extracción. Es una práctica devastadora que afecta la salud de todos.

El taller finalizó con un recorrido por el río en busca de camarones. Pudimos registrar la presencia de cinco especies distintas. Esperamos que este sea el primero de muchos recorridos de monitoreo de camarones que ayude a la sobrevivencia de la especie. ■

he beautiful community of Dos Brazos de Río is a small town surrounded by the forests of the Corcovado National Park and the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. It is a place where environmental awareness and sustainable development grow more and more. To know more about the history of this town you have to go visit it. Alongside a local person, you will discover that it is a hidden jewel of the Osa Peninsula. Neither an image nor a thousand words can describe the beauties of this little paradise. We can anticipate that in Dos Brazos del Río Tigre there is a group of people dedicated to the monitoring of fauna, in order to know in detail the biodiversity that this site offers and to complement the tourism efforts.

Recently the MonitoreOsa program of the ASCONA ONG, and with the support of the scientist Hilary Brumberg of the Healthy Rivers Program, organized a workshop about the monitoring of river shrimp and the effect of poison on the ecosystem. The interest to know about the natural history of these animals was born by the same neighbors, who have been observing the decline of shrimp populations in their rivers, possibly as a result of the bad practices used by some people to extract the shrimp.

What surprised the group the most was the magnitude of the effect of the poison. It does not only kill the shrimp, but also all life that houses a river - insects, crabs, fish, it even affects the otters and other animals, which feed on poisoned animals.

Finally, it affects people who consume shrimp from this type of extraction. It is a devastating practice to everyone’s health.

The workshop ended with a tour of the river in search of shrimp. We were able to register the presence of five different species. We hope this is the first of many shrimp monitoring tours that will help the species survive. ■
