s ocasión especial para expresar mi gratitud a todos por 10 años de interés en nuestra revista, a nuestros anunciantes por su confianza y a nuestros colaboradores por su profesionalismo y continuo optimismo. Crecer conjuntamente con nuestra área ha sido el viaje más fascinante en el que me he embarcado, conocer a fondo nuestra comunidad extraordinariamente bella, observando cómo se animan unos a otros para construir juntos. Hemos viajado desde las montañas de Chirripó hasta la Península de Osa para cubrir competiciones de surf, entrevistar a propietarios de hoteles y operadores turísticos, así como representantes de aerolíneas, promocionando el destino con historias sobre la naturaleza, la vida silvestre e información actualizada de negocios a través de nuestros artículos patrocinados. Esto nos permitió acompañar el progreso y desarrollo del Pacífico Sur. En nuestra presente edición, nos complace contarle nuestra historia (pág. 4), cómo comenzó todo y lo que ocurrió para llegar a celebrar nuestro décimo aniversario. his is a special occasion to express my gratitude to everyone for 10 years of interest in our magazine, to our advertisers for their trust and our collaborators for their professionalism and ongoing optimism. Growing with our area has been the most fascinating voyage I have ever engaged in, knowing our outstandingly beautiful community thoroughly as it encourages us to build together. We have travelled from the mountains of Chirripó to the Osa Peninsula to cover surf competitions, interview hotel owners, meet with tour operators and airlines representatives, promoting the area with tales about nature and wildlife, and updated information about businesses through our sponsored articles. This allowed us to accompany the progress of growth and development of the South Pacific area. In our present edition we are pleased to tell you our story (page 4), how it all started and what occurred before we arrived at our 10th anniversary. Recently we accompanied the G-String Cowboys to their first concert in the Chirripó Valley at the Batsú GastroPub in Canaan de Rivas. We found it definitely worthwhile, spending a weekend in the fresh air of this cute little mountain village (page 12). Las Velas at TikiVillas Hotel in Playa Hermosa (page 28), a very romantic restaurant, presents Chef German who will be pleased to prepare specialties even if they are not on the menu. Historia de Ballena Tales

n 2007, después de un largo viaje por varios países, llegué a Uvita contratada por un amigo, gerente en el Hotel Whales and Dolphins (hoy Vista Ballena) para ser su asistente. Después de un corto período él se marchó y quedé a cargo del escaso personal, la recepción y la contabilidad. Trabajé semanas seguidas sin tener un día libre y finalmente decidí que definitivamente no había venido a Costa Rica para esto. Un cliente me ofreció trabajo en su empresa de desarrollo inmobiliario, esta fue una oportunidad fantástica, se me proporcionó casa, un carro y viví en las alturas de Escaleras. Hasta que de repente..., el hombre desapareció con el dinero de sus inversionistas. ¿Qué hacer ahora? Gracias a ser miembro de la Cámara de Comercio, había hecho muchos contactos. En el año 2007, la Cámara y el entonces Ministro de Turismo, Carlos Benavides, bautizaron el área de Dominical, Uvita a Ojochal como Costa Ballena. En ese momento los medios de comunicación entre las tres aldeas eran escasos. En Ojochal ni siquiera funcionaba el servicio telefónico. Aconsejado por el ex presidente de la Cámara, comencé a editar un pequeño folleto dedicado al área, entrevistando a pioneros, empresarios y turistas. Desde el principio, Ballena Tales fue un éxito. Todos querían leer acerca de su vecino y la gente que nos visitaba. En el año 2008, la repercusión del colapso inmobiliario en los Estados Unidos se notó en Costa Ballena y muchos negocios cerraron. Sin importar el Pura Dura Vida (nuestra edición #5) y siempre asociados a la Cámara, en 2009 organizamos la primera Exposición Dominical, un año más tarde, la primera exposición de Costa Ballena, trabajando en conjunto con organizaciones empresariales y ambientales locales. Este mismo año se concluyó la construcción de la Costanera entre Quepos y Dominical abriendo el destino del Pacífico Sur al “mundo”. Ahora más personas viajaban a lo largo de la costa hacia el sur y más empresas querían estar presentes en Ballena Tales. Al mismo tiempo nuestro creciente equipo editorial contaba historias sobre l o s atractivos, los dueños de negocios, la visita de un ministro, las fiestas tradicionales costarricenses, la nueva estación de policía, el asfaltado de una carretera, un nuevo grupo de música, el espectáculo teatral, carreras de bicicletas, competencias de surf, naturaleza, tours, ballenas, esferas de piedra, Envision, Boruca, y muchas iniciativas hermosas, entrevistando a

los vecinos haciéndolos famosos por una edición. Organizamos desfiles de moda, cubrimos el embellecimiento de Bahía cuando todas las casitas fueron pintadas. Así Ballena Tales se convirtió en la revista que unía a la gente, a la vez que promovía el destino en el mundo. Costa Ballena se estaba convirtiendo de repente en un área muy interesante. En el año 2011 celebramos nuestro tercer aniversario en la pista de aterrizaje de Papa Kilo. La Revista Ballena Tales ha continuado colaborando con las organizaciones locales, como Guardavidas de Costa Ballena, DAWG (Asociación para el Bienestar Animal), los Santuarios de Vida Silvestre, las Cámaras de Turismo y Comercio, las organizaciones de seguridad y otras. En el año 2012 se registró www.ballenatales.com, procurando para Costa Ballena y el destino Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, una visibilidad y conectividad aún mayor. Actualmente Ballena Tales integra la revista impresa con una sólida presencia en Internet, sólo en el sitio web en los últimos 90 días, recibimos más de 600,000 visualizaciones y más de 24 mil clics, para un CTR de 3.6%. Considerando la presencia en web y redes sociales, ésta con una audiencia cercana a los 15,000 seguidores, tenemos en la actualidad un tráfico mensual superior a las 300 mil visualizaciones. Nuestro equipo ha crecido. A bordo desde el primer momento ha estado Philippe Chapuy, nuestro director de arte franco-ojochaleño; el webmaster Carlos Leon, quien es tico y un brillante Marketer y nuestra escritora de contenidos y correctora de pruebas, la norteamericana por mucho tiempo residente de Costa Ballena, lady Annie Drake. Además, contamos con el apoyo de una empresa internacional de mercadeo y estamos orgullosos de nuestra nueva oficina contigua a Cabinas Gato en Uvita, ¡donde esperamos su visita! As well, we interviewed neighbors making them famous for one edition. Ballena Tales became the magazine that united the people along the coast, at the same promoting the area to the world. Costa Ballena suddenly was becoming a hot spot. In 2011 we celebrated our third anniversary at the Papa Kilo airstrip. We organized fashion shows, covered the embellishment of Bahía when volunteers painted the village. Ballena Tales Magazine has been collaborating for many years with the Costa Ballena Lifeguards, DAWG Animal Welfare, the Animal Sanctuaries, the Chambers of Tourism and Commerce, and Security organization. In 2012 www.ballenatales.com was registered, providing Costa Ballena with an even greater visibility and connectivity to the World Wide Web. Today we have integrated the magazine with a strong presence on the internet. In just the last 90 days we received more than 600,000 views and more than 24,000 clicks, with a CTR of 3.6. Considering the presence on the web and social networks, with an audience to 15,000 followers, we currently have a monthly traffic of more than 300,000 views. Our team has grown. On board from the very start has been Philippe Chapuy, our French-Ojochalean Art Director, Carlos Leon, our brilliant marketer who is Tico, and North American and longtime resident in Costa Ballena, lady Annie Drake, our content writer and proofreader. Moreover, we have the support of an international marketing company, and are proud to have opened our new office at Cabinas Gato in Uvita. We are looking forward to your visit! n 2007, after a long journey through other countries, I came to Uvita invited by a friend to be his assistant manager at the Whales and Dolphins Hotel (today Vista Ballena). He left after a short period and I was left in charge of personnel, reception, and accounting – with very little staff. I labored weeks in a row without a day off and finally decided that I definitely had not come to Costa Rica to work my “butt off” for this job. A customer offered me a position at his development company, which was a fantastic opportunity. He provided a house at the heights of Escaleras and a car. Until…, the guy suddenly disappeared with the money of his clients. What to do now? Thanks to being a member of the Chamber of Commerce I had made plenty of acquaintances. In 2007, the chamber and the then Minister of Tourism, Carlos Benavides, had baptized the area from Dominical, Uvita to Ojochal as Costa Ballena. At this time there was no printed means of communication between the three villages. In Ojochal not even phone service was functioning. Advised by the ex-president of the Chamber, I started to edit a little brochure dedicated to the area, interviewing pioneers, business people, and tourists. From the very start, Ballena Tales was a hit. Everybody wanted to read about his neighbor and what people came to visit. In 2008 the repercussion of the real estate crash in the United States reached Costa Ballena and many local agencies closed down. Never minding the Pura Dura Vida (our edition #5) and always belonging to the Chamber, in 2009 we organized the first Dominical Expo and a year later the first exhibition of Costa Ballena, working together with local business and environmental organizations. This same year the construction of the Costanera between Quepos and Dominical was concluded opening the area to the “world.” More people travelled from San José along the coast to the South, and additional establishments needed to be present in Ballena Tales. Our growing editorial team went on telling the tales about the business owners, a minister’s visit, traditional Costa Rican Fiestas, the new police station,

scribir es algo que me apasiona, y comprendo que por medio de la escritura se adquiere conocimiento, el cual es poderoso cuando se usa de forma positiva. El conocimiento rompe las cadenas de la esclavitud de cualquier tipo... y, en el Sur de Costa Rica existe un valle privilegiado habitado por gente valiente y gallarda que siempre ha dado la lucha por nobles ideales. En Pérez Zeledón, vivir es un arte y la vida es toda una aventura que va de la mano con su entorno. Aquí su gente sencilla, amable y pensante, medita para desarrollar más cordura y una conciencia ambiental sana. El Sur de Costa Rica, ha visto nacer grandes personajes de la cultura y literatura costarricense, artistas de la letras, la música y el deporte, un valle místico rodeado de montañas que guardan los secretos de Pachamama (Madre Tierra) y donde la diplomacia es el arte de dejar que alguien se salga con la suya.

Su gente sabe bien que “sin sacrificio no hay éxito” y así lo dicta su historia escrita por el tiempo. No olvida a esos héroes recordados por aquellos que reconocen el valor del tiempo y de la historia, y que comprenden claramente que “ningún problema se puede resolver efectivamente si niega su existencia”. Yo no quiero cambiar el mundo, solamente quiero mejorar mi entorno. Y eso lo consigo mejorándome a mí mismo y si todos hacemos eso, todo cambia positivamente. Pachamama es sabia, por eso hago como hacen las tortugas: Nobles criaturas que disfrutan lentamente de su viaje por la vida. Nacen y recorren el mundo, y siempre regresan a sus raíces. Por ello, después de una ausencia llena de aprendizajes, a mi regreso y desde mis escritos extiendo una cordial invitación a todos los viajeros del mundo, para que vengan y disfruten de las maravillas del Sur de Costa Rica. ■

riting is something that I am passionate about. I understand that through writing a lot of knowledge is acquired, which is powerful when used positively. Knowledge breaks the chains of slavery of any kind. In the South of Costa Rica, there is a privileged valley inhabited by brave and gallant people who have always fought for noble ideals. There, in Perez Zeledón, living is an art, and the whole journey is an adventure that goes hand in hand with its environment. Its people, humble and thinking individuals, meditate to develop more sanity and a healthy environmental conscience. This Southern Zone has seen the birth of great characters of the local culture and literature, artists of letters, music and sports, a mystical valley. The area is surrounded by mountains that guard the secrets of Pachamama (Mother Earth) and is where Diplomacy is the art of letting someone

have their way. Here people know that “without sacrifice there is no success,” and this is dictated by history that is written in time. It does not forget the heroes remembered by those who recognize the value of the past and clearly understand that “no problem can be effectively solved if you deny its existence.” I do not want to change the world, I just want to improve it ... and that I get by improving myself. If we all do that, everything changes positively. Pachamama is wise, that is why I do as turtles do: Noble creatures slowly enjoying their journey through life, travelling the world and always returning to their roots. For that reason, after an absence full of experiences, I returned. Today from my desk, I extend a cordial invitation to all the travelers of the world to come and enjoy the wonders of the South of Costa Rica. ■

La rana venenosa del Golfo Dulce (Phyllobates vittatus) está relacionada con la rana más mortífera del planeta, la rana venenosa dorada (Phyllobates terribilis), que es endémica de Colombia. También está presente la rana venenosa verde y negra (Dendrobates auratus). Estas ranas viven en ambas costas de Costa Rica. Los de la costa atlántica tienen un color verde básico con marcas negras. Con las ranas de nuestra costa del Pacífico es todo lo contrario. Los más pequeños de la colección son la rana de fresa (Oophaga pumilio) y la rana de dardo venenosa granular (Oophaga granulifera), la más reciente de nuestra región. Las ranas son anfibios, como reptiles, son ectotérmicos. Entonces ellos dependen de fuentes externas para regular su temperatura corporal. Esto es esencial para su proceso metabólico. La respiración de los anfibios se realiza a través de las branquias, los pulmones o la piel. El intercambio de oxígeno y CO2 lo hacen a través de su piel. Su cambio profundo en forma o metamorfosis, desde el huevo hasta el adulto, es otra gran diferencia con los reptiles. Los recién nacidos son copias exactas de sus padres. Además

The poison dart frogs do have toxins, and their bright colors warn off predators. This is called aposematic

coloration. They get their toxins from their prey like ants, termites and other little arthropods. The Golfo Dulce poison dart frog (Phyllobates vittatus) is related to the deadliest frog on the planet, the golden poison frog (Phyllobates terribilis), which is endemic to Colombia. Also present is the green and black poison frog (Dendrobates auratus). These frogs occur on both coasts of Costa Rica. The ones from the Atlantic coast do have a green basic color with black markings. With the frogs from our Pacific coast it’s just the opposite. The smallest in the collection are the strawberry frog (Oophaga pumilio) and granular poison dart frog (Oophaga granulifera), the latest from our region. Frogs are amphibians, like reptiles they are ectothermic. So they rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature. This is essential for their metabolic process. The breathing of amphibians is via gills, lungs or through their skin. The exchange of oxygen and CO2 can be made through their skin. Their profound change in form or metamorphosis, from egg to adult, is another great difference with reptiles. Newborn reptiles are exact copies of their parents. Besides the frogs we have in the vivarium, our beautiful garden and ponds attract many other species of local frogs and toads. The most famous ones are the red eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) and cane toad (Rhinella marina). Most of them are nocturnal, but you might catch a glimpse of them while visiting the park. ■

on un peso de más de 300 kilos, la Danta (Tapirus bairdii) es el mamífero terrestre más grande de América Central o del Sur. Los tapires o dantas todavía se encuentran en al menos ocho parques nacionales en Costa Rica, en Costa Ballena se habían extinguido. A principios del siglo XX, esta área estaba completamente cubierta de selva tropical, y abundaba una gran diversidad de vida silvestre, incluidos los tapires. Los primeros colonos los cazaron para la carne, las pieles y por deporte. También destruyeron su hábitat la selva tropical para sembrar pastizales para el ganado. Durante los años 50 y 60 el gerente de Hacienda Barú me dijo que después de las lluvias torrenciales y la inundación épica de 1955, encontró el cuerpo de una danta muerta en la playa Barú. Fue la primera que se había visto en más de cinco años. Dos años después mató una en la parte montañosa de Hacienda Barú por lo que podemos estimar que el año 1957 fue el año de la extinción local de la especie. En la misma época un amigo de Hatillo recuerda haber visto unas huellas de danta cerca del lugar donde daba sal a su ganado. En 1990, la Junta Directiva de la organización ambiental Amigos de la Naturaleza (ASANA) decidió iniciar un ambicioso proyecto llamado Corredor Biológico Paso de la Danta con el objetivo de regenerar suficiente hábitat natural entre los ríos Savegre y Térraba para conectar todas las grandes parcelas de bosque con la esperanza de que los tapires algún día regresarían a la zona. Aunque las dantas aún no viven y se reproducen en el corredor, de vez en cuando deambulan en éste y en los últimos años han sido avistadas cerca del río Savegre, cerca de Dos Bocas, y a lo largo de la Fila de Tinamastes más arriba de Alfombra. Creo firmemente que viviré para ver el día en que las dantas recorran de nuevo en la selva de Hacienda Barú. ■

The Tapirs

eighing upwards of 300 kilos Baird’s Tapir (Tapirus bairdii) is the largest land mammal in Central or South America. Tapirs are still found in at least eight national parks in Costa Rica, but are locally extinct in the Costa Ballena. At the beginning of the 20th century this area was completely covered with rainforest, and many different kinds of wildlife including tapirs were abundant. The first settlers hunted them for meat, hides, and sport, and also destroyed their rainforest habitat in order to plant pasture for cattle. The manager of Hacienda Barú during the 1950s and 60s told me that after the torrential rains and epic flood of 1955, he found the body of a dead tapir washed up on Barú Beach. It was the first one he had seen in over five years. About two years later, he shot one in the upper portions of Hacienda Barú. So, we can estimate that the year 1957 was the approximate time of local extinction of the species. About that same time a friend from Hatillo remembers seeing tapir tracks near a salt lick for his cattle. In 1990 the board of directors of the environmental organization Amigos de la Naturaleza (ASANA) decided to initiate an ambitious project called the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor (PTBC). Their goal was to regenerate enough natural habitat between the Savegre and Térraba Rivers to connect all of the large forest parcels together in the hope that the tapirs would one day return to the area. Though the tapirs are not yet living or reproducing in the corridor, they do wander in from time to time. In recent years, they have been sighted along the Savegre River, near Dos Bocas and along the Tinamastes ridge above Alfombra. he Dominical Semana Santa Classic has become a big and completely nonprofit community event. Justin Hague the organizer and head judge came to Dominical in 2005. Originally, he was a realtor from California who found that this area had a great potential. Always a passionate surfer, this was his opportunity to making a living out of his favorite sport. He founded Tubo Surf, promoting the surfing culture in Dominical. What a shock for him to learn that so many people drowned at the beach! At this time, lifeguards existed in Dominical only on an irregular basis. In order to raise funds for these very important life savers, he started organizing Surf Competitions, this year the 7th Dominical Semana Santa Classic. Surfers in the categories Open Male, Open Female, Junior Male, Local and MiniGroms (U12) participated putting on amazing show. Most sponsors have been the same from the very start such as Banana Print, Maracatú, Kike and Costa Rican Architects, David Wolfe with DGK Contracting from Ojochal, the Costa Rica Surf Camp and so many more. Relatively new sponsors are Fuego Brew Co. and Mavi Surf Hotel. Thanks to all! “The sponsors´ money pays for prizes and the competition” explained Justin “with the inscription money and the entrance fee going to the after party at El Fuego. l apellido Brower de Ingrid Kelly en realidad fue heredado de su abuelo norteamericano que vino a trabajar a Costa Rica durante la construcción de la Carretera Interamericana. Kelly nació en Oakdale, California, donde sus padres costarricenses habían emigrado en busca de una vida más próspera. Durante unas vacaciones visitaría Costa Rica con su familia, incluidos sus dos hermanos menores. Kelly sabía desde el primer viaje, que algún día estaría viviendo en este país que estaba aprendiendo a amar tanto. En cada visita, conoció más y más miembros de su familia, en su mayoría moradores de Rivas de San Gerardo (San Isidro de Pérez Zeledón). De vuelta en California, Kelly estudió cosmetología y le provocó un grave agotamiento el trabajo realizado durante años en un salón especializado en cortes. Fue así como decidió: “Quiero dedicarme a la peluquería en Costa Rica”. Cuando tenía dieciocho años, vino a Uvita con su perrito Jimmy, su compañero más leal. Allí trabajó antes que nada en un hotel de lujo hasta que oyó que un salón de peluquería estaba a la venta en Dominical. Ella fue a hablar con la dueña que estaba pidiendo mucho dinero por él. Kelly le ofreció todos sus ahorros, que no llegaban ni la mitad de la cantidad. Y la dueña... aceptó. Esto fue a principios del año pasado. Kelly cambió el nombre del salón a Medusa, lo equipó bellamente y trajo sus propios estilos a Costa Ballena. Kelly es perfectamente bilingüe y tiene una personalidad muy agradable. Hace un excelente trabajo con color, reflejos y cortes. Sin embargo, su habilidad más destacada es el “balayage”, una técnica francesa. Tiene como objetivo la distribución uniforme de la luz y el brillo del color, evitando la decoloración agresiva del cabello. Kelly sabe cómo aplicar el color para que se adapte a tu piel, por lo que se verá increíble e iluminará su rostro. No puede perderse Medusa en la entrada de Dominical. Pida una cita y dele mis saludos! ■

ngrid Kelly´s surname Brower was actually inherited from her North American grandfather who came to work to Costa Rica during the construction of the Interamerican Highway. Kelly herself was born in Oakdale, California where her Costa Rican parents had migrated in search of a more prosperous life. During vacations, her family including her two small brothers would visit Costa Rica. Kelly knew from the first trip, that one day she would be living in this country which she was learning to love so much. Each time they came she met more and more of her family, mostly living in Rivas de San Gerardo (San Pérez Zeledón). Back in California, Kelly studied cosmetology and worked for years in a cut shop which lead to a burn-out. “I want to do hair in Costa Rica,” she decided. When she was eighteen years old, she came to Uvita with her little dog Jimmy, her most loyal companion. There she worked first at a luxury hotel until she

heard that a hairdressing salon in Dominical was for sale. She went to talk to the owner who was asking a lot of money for it. Kelly offered her all her savings, which was not even half of the amount. And the owner… accepted. This was at the beginning of last year. Kelly changed the name of the salon to Medusa, equipped it beautifully and brought her very own styles to Costa Ballena. Kelly is perfectly bilingual and has a very pleasant personality. She does an excellent job with color, highlights, and cuts. Her most outstanding skill though is the balayage, a French technique. It aims at the uniform distribution of light and brightness of the color, avoiding the aggressive discoloration of the hair. Kelly knows how to place the color to suit your skin, so it will look amazing and light up your features. You can´t miss Medusa at the very entrance to Dominical. Temporada de lluvia Cosas que hacer en Dominical

urante los meses lluviosos del año, generalmente Dominical recibe menos turismo. Por muchos turistas la lluvia es vista como indeseable. Si bien entiendo que puede ser cierto en climas más fríos, las temperaturas aquí no cambian mucho. El sueño tropical de usar pantalones cortos y una camiseta sin mangas todo el día permanece, pero llevar un paraguas es probablemente una buena idea. Una vez que se dé cuenta de los patrones climáticos diarios, aprende a vivir con ellos. Las mañanas soleadas son tan comunes como las tormentas eléctricas en la tarde. Simplemente planee diferente. En realidad, hay muchas actividades que son mejores durante la temporada de lluvia. El rafting de río está en su mejor momento. Las compañías de rafting que salen de Dominical para aventuras diarias ofrecen rápidos de clase 3 y clase 4 con una selección de 3 ríos cercanos. Los viajes son increíblemente pintorescos, sin exageración, y los altos niveles de agua lo convierten en un viaje emocionante. Cascadas cerca de Dominical como Pozo Azul y La Ceiba también están en un nivel más emocionante. En los meses de verano algunas cascadas cercanas disminuyen a un goteo aburrido. Con lluvias más constantes, las cascadas son más dramáticas, ¡y las piscinas son muy refrescantes! Mientras planifique su viaje por la mañana, sus probabilidades de cielos soleados son mucho mejores. El surf es otra actividad de Dominical que mejora en los meses lluviosos. Dominical recibe el surf más grande y consistente entre los meses de mayo y octubre. Si recién está aprendiendo, las olas de agua blanca en las fases de marea baja son excelentes. La temporada de lluvias es generalmente la época preferida del año por los ticos y los expatriados. La temperatura promedio es generalmente más fresca y hay una gran cantidad de agua para los cultivos. Con las lluvias vienen las frutas tropicales de temporada. Aprenda a disfrutar la temporada verde y dele la bienvenida a la lluvia. ■

Rainy Season Things to Do in Dominical

uring the rainy months of the year Dominical generally receives less tourism. The rain is usually viewed as undesirable by many tourists. While I understand that may be true in cooler climates, the temperatures don’t change much here. The tropical dream of wearing shorts and a tank-top all day still exists, but bringing an umbrella is probably a good idea. Once you catch on to the daily weather patterns, you learn to work with it. Sunny mornings are just as common as thunderstorms in the afternoon. Just plan accordingly. There are actually many activities that are better in the rainy season. River Rafting is at its prime. Rafting companies leaving from Dominical for daily adventures offer class 3 and class 4 rapids with a choice of 3 nearby rivers. The trips are incredibly scenic to say the least and the high water levels makes for a thrilling ride. Waterfalls near Dominical such as Pozo Azul and La Ceiba are also at a more exciting level now. In the summer months some nearby waterfalls slow down to a dull trickle. With more consistent rains, the cascades are more dramatic, and the pools are fresh and cool! As long as you plan your trip for the morning, your odds of sunny skies are much better. Surfing is another Dominical activity that gets better in the rainy months. Dominical receives the biggest and most consistent surf between the months of May-October. If you are just learning, the white water waves on the lower tide phases are great then. The rainy season is usually the preferred time of the year by both ticos and expats. The average temperature is generally cooler and there is an abundance of water for crops. os investigadores difieren en cuántos sonidos diferentes puede hacer un gato. La mayoría está de acuerdo en que los gatos solo vocalizan a los humanos, no a otros gatos. Otro gato solo recibirá un silbido o gruñido, no un “oh, ahí estás”. El maullido de cada gato varía de cualquier otro. Parecen tener un conjunto de sonidos que utilizan para comunicar cosas específicas a su gente. Aquí hay algunos mensajes comunes que su gato está transmitiendo cuando maúlla: El maullido de la madrugada es un ruido repetitivo, bastante ruidoso, de una sílaba. Esto puede ir acompañado de arañazos o golpes en su puerta y normal-

mente continúa hasta que te rindas y lo atiendas. ¿Cómo ellos saben que está despierto sigue siendo un misterio? Poco después de su llegada, el miau cambia y es parte del baile de la cocina. Este maullido significa “poner algo en mi plato”. Si bañas a tu gato, ciertamente has escuchado el maullido “no me bañes” que parece que la última de sus nueve vidas está por terminar. La caza es instintiva para un gato y un maullido bajo y repetitivo anunciará la captura exitosa de cualquier cosa, desde un juguete hasta un ratón. Why do Cat’s Meow?

esearchers diverge on how many different sounds a cat can make, but most agree that cats only vocalize to humans, not to other cats. Another cat will only receive a hiss or growl, not a “oh, there you are.” Every cat´s meow varies from any others. They seem to have a set of sounds they use to communicate specific things to their people. Here are some common messages your cat is conveying when they meow: The early morning meow is a repetitive, rather loud, one syllable noise. This can be accompanied by scratching or banging on your door and normally continues until you surrender and come out. How they know you are awake remains a mystery? Swiftly following your arrival, the meow changes and is part of the dance to the kitchen. This meow means “put something in my bowl”. If you bathe your cat, you have certainly heard the “I can bathe

myself” meow that sounds as if the last of its nine lives is about to end. Hunting is instinctive to a cat and a low, repetitive meow will announce the successful catching of anything from a toy to a mouse. A hopefully infrequently heard meow is the “I am about to throw up a fur ball.” No matter how fast you move when hearing this meow, you will be unable to move the cat from the sofa in time to avoid the nasty result. The pitiful meow is the one your cat uses when being placed in the cat carrier. It means “I do not want to go to the vet” or “I do not want to be neutered.” Your attempt to replicate the meow will not be successful although your cat does recognize your voice and body language. Now that you can translate the cat´s meow, please come by and adopt one – they are looking for someone who understands them. ■

Aprendiendo acerca de la Vida Silvestre

omo estudiante canadiense de técnico veterinario, pasé los últimos 2 años y medio aprendiendo todo sobre medicina animal. En Canadá los inviernos son largos y los veranos calurosos y tenemos una gran variedad de vida silvestre. Sin embargo, quería hacer mi práctica final en algún lugar único, un sitio donde pudiera salir de mi habitación y sentirme conectado con la naturaleza. Costa Rica me brindó todo esto y mucho más. Incluso con mi experiencia, nunca podría haber imaginado trabajar con animales tan increíbles como aquí en Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary. Algunos de los animales incluyen tucanes, perezosos, búhos, comedores de hormigas, coatíes, monos aulladores, cometas, colibríes, zarigüeyas y kinkajous. Suelo limpiar los recintos, alimento a los animales, reúno enriquecimiento para estimular conductas semejantes a las de un animal sano en su medio natural, administro medicamentos y ayudo a los veterinarios en la clínica. es muy gratificante saber que estás haciendo una diferencia. Ayer mismo, algunos lugareños trajeron a un perezoso macho de 3 dedos. Aunque amo a todos los animales aquí, me he encariñado mucho con los perezosos. Dependiendo de la especie de perezoso, los machos se pueden distinguir más fácilmente, debido a un parche de pelaje de color con una franja negra en la espalda. La gente a menudo piensa que es una lesión, pero se usa para atraer a las hembras durante la temporada de apareamiento. A través de tours el Santuario de Vida Silvestre Alturas educa al público sobre la vida silvestre. El objetivo en Alturas es rehabilitar a los animales e incorporarlos nuevamente a la naturaleza. Ya aprendí mucho en mis primeras semanas aquí en Alturas. El personal y los voluntarios aquí son extremadamente apasionados con los animales, y se refleja en su trabajo. Sé que tomé la decisión correcta al hacer mi práctica en Costa Rica. ■

Educating about Wildlife

s a Canadian veterinary technician student, I spent the past 2 and a half years learning all about animal medicine. With Canada’s long winters and hot summers, we have a large variety of wildlife. However, I wanted to do my final placement somewhere unique – somewhere that I could walk out of my bedroom and feel connected to nature. Costa Rica provided me all of those things and so much more. Even with all my experience, I could have never imagined working with such amazing animals here at Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of the animals include toucans, sloths, owls, anteaters, coatis, howler monkeys, kites, hummingbirds, opossums and kinkajous. On a typical day, I clean the enclosures, feed the animals, gather enrichment, administer medications and assist the veterinarians in the clinic. The work can be physically challenging, especially in the Costa Rican heat, but it is so rewarding to know you are making a difference.

While I love all the animals here, I have found myself quite fond of the sloths. Just yesterday, a male 3 toed sloth was brought in by some locals. Depending on the species of sloth, the males can be more easily distinguished, due to a patch of colored fur with a black stripe on their back. People often think it’s an injury, but it’s used to attract the females during mating season. Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary also does a great deal of educating the public about wildlife. They offer tours of the sanctuary and create posters about certain animals, advising what to do if they come across them. The goal at Alturas is to rehabilitate the animals and incorporate them back into the wild. I’ve already learned so much in my first weeks here at Alturas. The staff and volunteers here are extremely passionate about the animals and it shows in their work. I know I made the right decision by doing my placement in Costa Rica. ■

want to share a big win with you, three actually. For years the Lifeguards have relied on many small donations from the community. Our first big win was when the Mayor of Osa pushed through four of eight salaries making the Municipality a true partner in the program. The second big win happened when the Ventanas Beach Committee contracted two lifeguards for weekends and holidays, allowing us to expand our reach beyond Dominical and Playa Hermosa. Thanks to your donations and these partners, we have saved hundreds of lives and prevented many thousands of incidents. This past April, we had our third big win. A grant from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) allowed us to pilot a new program called SafeBeach in the Marino Ballena National Park. What is SafeBeach? It’s a hybrid crime prevention and lifeguard patrol of at-risk youth with special training in crime prevention, ocean safety, basic rescue and first-responder/CPR. Wearing bright-red t-shirts, the SafeBeach patrol walked the beach and parking areas looking for suspicious behavior and dangerous conditions. They had whistles, binoculars, a rescue buoy and were in constant contact with the police, park staff and lifeguards through a WhatsApp group. The pilot was a huge success. After 10 days, the patrol had 72 preventions and responded to 21 incidents including rescues, assaults and robberies. The pilot is being studied by the US Embassy and other regions. Congrats all around! Your donations and the partnership with the Municipality will keep the Lifeguards going. As for SafeBeach, I have high hopes for it here, and other parts of the country. Nuestra primera gran victoria fue cuando el gobierno local aprobó cuatro de ocho salarios, lo que convirtió la Municipalidad en un verdadero socio en el programa. La segunda gran victoria ocurrió cuando el Comité de Playa de Ventanas contrató a dos socorristas para los fines de semana y feriados, lo que nos permitió expandir nuestro alcance más allá de Dominical y Playa Hermosa. os encanta vivir aquí rodeado de naturaleza, mar, montañas y buenos vecinos. Todos nosotros nos sentimos orgullosos de Costa Rica. En comparación con muchos lugares del mundo, la región de Costa Ballena es también uno de los lugares más seguros. Lamentablemente, los incidentes van en aumento. Conducción peligrosa, robos y asaltos en la playa acompañan el ritmo de aumento de la visitación turística. Tenemos que actuar antes de que cambie la naturaleza de este lugar. Analizando el problema, éste se relaciona con presupuestos insuficientes para nuestra policía, los programas municipales y los tribunales sobrecargados de denuncias. En reuniones con ministros, alcaldes, municipios, autoridades de la policía, grupos comunitarios y expertos en seguridad, hemos hablado sobre el desarrollo y la cultura del crimen, así como de los peligros de combatir el fuego con fuego. De todo esto aprendí tres cosas críticamente importantes. 1. No es demasiado tarde para evitar que las cosas empeoren. 2. Todos debemos asumir un rol activo como socios de servicios e instituciones públicas. 3. Tenemos que tomar la iniciativa! Dangerous driving, robberies and assaults on the beach are keeping pace with increasing tourism. We need to act before the very nature of this place changes. I’ve looked at our underfunded policing budgets, municipal programs and overloaded courts. In meetings with Ministers, federal agents, mayors, chiefs of police, town councils, community groups and security experts, we’ve talked about the development and culture of crime with the perils of fighting fire with fire. From all of this I learned three critically important things. 1. It’s not too late to stop things from getting worse. 2. Everyone must take an active role as partners with public services and institutions. 3. We need to take the lead! Every time a report is filed the police have more information to solve and prevent crime, emergency services are better prepared and the budgeting process becomes more informed. Un reconocimiento para la comunidad

n March the Ecological Blue Flag was hoisted in Colonia Beach, one of the four blazons that distinguishes the Marine Ballena National Park. This is a result of the common effort among park authorities, neighbors, park rangers, community organizations, environmental groups and tourist companies in the sector. Their representatives attended the ceremony which was led by the Sub-Director of the Area, Mrs. Stephanie Mory, in presence of the local police, volunteers and press. The achievement is not permanent and therefore must be

sustained year after year, applying the practices, especially in terms of the protection of the natural treasure that distinguish the Park, enforced by the regulations for the obtaining of this prized award. It was a sunny afternoon, full of joy and pride because of the great achievement. The blue color of the flag made a single tone with the color of the sea. I felt happy to live in the South Pacific of Costa Rica where we can show the world an extraordinary natural wealth. ■

n marzo se izó la Bandera Azul Ecológica en Playa Colonia, uno de los cuatro blasones que distinguen al Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, resultado del esfuerzo común entre autoridades del parque, vecinos, guarda parques, organizaciones comunales, grupos ambientales y las empresas turísticas del sector, cuyos representantes estuvieron en la ceremonia a cargo de la Sub-Directora del Área, Sra. Stephanie Mory, contando también con la presencia de la policía local, voluntarios y prensa. El logro no es permanente y por tanto debe sostenerse año con año, aplicando las prácticas, que especialmente en materia de protección del tesoro natural que distingue al Parque, que es impuesta por las regulaciones para la obtención de este preciado galardón. Fue una tarde soleada, llena de alegría y orgullo por el resultado obtenido. El color azul de la bandera, se hacía un solo tono con el color del mar. Me sentí feliz de vivir en el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, donde podemos mostrar al mundo una riqueza natural extraordinaria. ■

den Adventure Hostel and Community Center is a new project located in the old Badilla Cancha Synthetica soccer field in Bahia-Uvita. Mr Badilla built for the community in 2013, but it was closed down last year. The new tenants Kelvin Vasquez and Doug Davis hope that the latest use of the facility will have a real impact on the community and honor the original intention of the founder. They believe the opportunity for parents and children to play in a park-like space that is protected from rain and sun will be popular, especially during the green season. It is a place where parents can socialize and meet new people or use high speed internet for various projects whether it is for school or work. The center will also provide an opportunity for children and adults to attend classes such as English, Spanish, technology, permaculture, cooking, survival, sports and other subjects the community desires. By offering affordable healthy drinks and snacks

as well as a space for kids and parents to run and play will hopefully be a blessing to the lives of parents and the entire community. The community center will also be launching affordable sports leagues like softball, dodge ball, basketball and volleyball for both children and adults depending on demand. They are now taking sign-ups for players, coaches and referees. All participants will have the ability to either pay a small cost to play, or have an opportunity to create or take part in a community service projects for credit towards one of the sports teams and classes Eden offers. Kelvin and Doug said: “Our primary vision is to provide facilities that assist community projects, nonprofits, and the general well-being of the community as a whole by encouraging community involvement centered on playful education, cultural exchange and cooperation between people and companies.” ■

Los nuevos inquilinos Kelvin Vásquez y Doug Davis esperan que el nuevo uso de la instalación tenga un impacto real en la comunidad y honre la intención original del fundador. Creen que la oportunidad para que los padres y los niños jueguen en un espacio tipo parque protegido de la lluvia y el sol será popular, especialmente durante la temporada verde. Es un lugar donde los padres pueden socializar y conocer gente nueva o usar Internet de alta velocidad para diversos proyectos, ya sea para la escuela o el trabajo. El centro también brindará una oportunidad para que niños y adultos asistan a clases como inglés, español, tecnología, permacultura, cocina, supervivencia, deportes y otras materias que la comunidad desee. Será una bendición para las vidas de los padres y de toda la comunidad. Se ofrecen bebidas y refrigerios saludables y asequibles, así como un espacio para que los niños y sus padres corran y jueguen. El centro comunitario también promoverá ligas deportivas asequibles como softball, balón quemado y voleibol para niños y adultos, esto según la demanda. En estos momentos están recibiendo inscripciones para jugadores, entrenadores y árbitros. Todos los participantes tendrán la posibilidad de pagar una pequeña colaboración por jugar, o tener la oportunidad de crear o participar en proyectos de servicio comunitario para obtener créditos para uno de los equipos deportivos y clases que Eden ofrece. El Yoga como un camino hacia la libertad

l yoga es una práctica cuya intención fundamental es encontrar la libertad interna; busca llevarnos de vuelta a nuestro estado natural. Si ponemos atención a un niño pequeño ellos están presentes, en el momento, disfrutando la vida como es, no por lo que debería ser. Experimentan sus emociones y luego las dejan ir, sin apegarse al enojo, resentimiento o tristeza. Sus cuerpos son abiertos y flexibles, les encanta moverse, jugar y disfrutar la vida. En yoga, usamos la práctica de asanas (posturas) para liberar nuestros cuerpos de las memorias, traumas y tensiones almacenadas; usamos la respiración y meditación para calmar nuestras mentes y lograr tener más claridad para poder discriminar cuales pensamientos mejoran nuestra calidad de vida y contribuyen con el bienestar colectivo y cuales hacen daño. Ojalá, usemos esta información reflejándose en la forma como interactuamos con el mundo exterior. Tal vez, ese estado de libertad nos ayude a ser más honestos, compasivos, lidiar mejor con los conflictos; nos conduzca a un mayor deseo de contribuir para hacer de este planeta un lugar mejor, o nos liberemos de enfocar innecesariamente nuestra atención en ser “el mejor” y en vez de eso empecemos a disfrutar de quienes somos, lo que

Yoga as a Path of Freedom

oga is a practice with a fundamental intention of finding internal freedom; it wants to bring us to our natural state, similar to a young child present, in the moment, enjoying life for what it is. Children experience their emotions and move on, not holding on to their anger, resentment or sadness. Their bodies are open, supple. They like to move, play and enjoy life. In yoga, we use the practice of asanas (postures) to liberate the body of all memories, traumas and tension; utilizing the breath and meditation to calm our minds. This provides more clarity so we can discriminate which thoughts improve the quality of our lives and contribute with the collective wellbeing, and which ones don’t. Hopefully, we use all this information so it reflects in what we say and how we interact with the external world. Maybe that state of freedom helps us be more honest,

compassionate and better at dealing with conflict. By freeing ourselves, perhaps we have a better desire to contribute with making this world a better place, or we find it unnecessary to focus our attention on being “the best.” Instead we just enjoy who we are, what we do and the beauty of what seems “ordinary”. By removing the internal tension, we are more able to admit when we have failed, it’s easier to say we are sorry and forgive others. Try to remember those moments when you have felt free and relaxed. Didn’t that wake up a better version of you? Because of all this, I do suggest that it is important for each one of us to have a practice, a sacred time and space where we release what doesn’t serve us (physically and mentally) so we can reconnect with that natural state that we were born with, and so we can share it with others and feel free. The real freedom rests inside. Namaste! ■

Exposición de Quilting en Pérez Zeledón

l domingo 8 de abril de 2018 centenares de visitantes asistieron a la primera Exposición de Quilting en Pérez Zeledón. Dieciséis apasionados competidores multinacionales de PZ, desde principiantes hasta experimentados profesionales, exhibieron más de 70 colchas en el Best Western Hotel Zima Salon, que se transformó en una galería de arte bilingüe. Se exhibieron colchas y edredones confeccionados tradicionalmente, colchas de cama, tapetes de mesa y ropa hecha a mano. Lo más llamativo para los principiantes en las tendencias actuales del mundo del quilting, fueron las numerosas e impresionantes colchas de arte. Hubo evocadores paisajes tropicales, retratos tan reales como en una fotografía de personas, animales y coloridos resúmenes contemporáneos. En la entrada se presentó “Pickin Berries” de Cathy Carrolan Mata, una colcha seleccionada para representar a Costa Rica en el prestigioso Quilt Festival International 2013 en Houston, una exhibición que luego viajó durante 2 años por los Estados Unidos. Los visitantes llegaron desde San José y San Vito. Los artistas se mezclaron orgullosamente en la multitud, respondiendo preguntas sobre sus inspiraciones, técnicas y aceptando felicitaciones de los presentes. Encantados los artistas y asistentes expresaron la esperanza de que esto se convierta en un evento anual. El objetivo era dar a conocer a los talentosos artistas “quilters” locales y proporcionar inspiración a la comunidad. Ahora, ¿qué es realmente el quilting? Es el proceso de coser dos o más capas de tela juntas para hacer un material acolchado más grueso, generalmente para crear una prenda acolchada. Por lo general, este procedimiento se realiza con tres capas: la parte superior de la tela o del edredón, la guata o material de acolchado y el material de respaldo. ■

n Sunday, April 8, 2018 more than two hundred visitors attended the first ever Perez Zeledón Quilt Exhibition. Sixteen passionate multinational PZ competitors, from beginner level to seasoned professionals, exhibited over 70 quilt pieces in the Best Western Hotel Zima Salon which was transformed into a bi-lingual art gallery. On display were traditional pieced and appliqued quilts, bed coverlets, table runners, and hand crafted clothing. Most striking for those new to current trends in the world of quilting were the many stunning art quilts. There were evocative tropical landscapes, photo realistic portraits of people, animals, and colorful contemporary abstracts. Featured at the entrance was “Pickin Berries” by Cathy Carrolan Mata, a quilt selected to represent Costa Rica at the prestigious Houston International Quilt Festival 2013, in an exhibit which then traveled the USA for 2 years. New Real Estate Office in Uvita

Properties CR, a familiar face in the Real Estate and Construction Community, has opened an office in Uvita in the new Cabinas Gato Office Complex. In 2004, Juan Carlos Mejias and his good friend Juan Manuel Gomez (known as Colombia) began a Realty and Home Development office in Platanillo, naming the company JJ after the two “Juans.” Their hard work earned them an excellent reputation. La experiencia de mi vida

n marzo del año en curso Juan Pablo Álvarez, chef ejecutivo del restaurante Castillo’s Kitchen en Ojochal, viajó con don William Ortíz, presidente de ANCH (Asociación Nacional del Chef de Costa Rica) y Roberto Guillen, joven chef quien igualmente pertenece a la Junta Directiva de ANCH, a Lima Perú, para participar en la Jatum Culinary Championship. Se llevó a cabo en la Universidad San Martín de Porres en la Facultad de Alta Cocina y Gastronomía. La propuesta de Juan Pablo fue un platillo, denominado “Corcovado”, integrando una langosta y productos nativos tales como: el endémico tacaco, pejibaye y culantro coyote. A la competencia llegaron los presidentes y representantes de las asociaciones gastronómicas de Canadá, Costa Rica, Panamá, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, Nicaragua, por supuesto el anfitrión Perú. También se contó con las exposiciones de Thomas Gugler, presidente de World Chefs (con 100 países miembros), así como varios directores continentales.

Juan Pablo no solo está orgulloso de haber conocido un país como Perú que se destaca por su increíble cocina, sino también de adquirir dos certificaciones que acreditan que él cumple con los altos estándares internacionales. Además dice “participar en Jatum con trajes blancos y medallas transfiere un sentido de liderazgo. Aprendimos tanto acerca de sostenibilidad en la cocina y el compromiso que un chef debería tener con su zona, como no comprar a “foodservices” sino todo fresco a los productores locales. Un chef puede ser como un rockstar, sigue Pablo, utilizando su notoriedad para lograr grandes cambios en la forma en que comemos, pensamos e incluso nos entendemos”. El propósito de Pablo es animar a otros jóvenes a inscribirse en ANCH para que puedan participar en las capacitaciones. Eventualmente quisiera traer o crear una Escuela de Gastronomía en el Pacifico Sur en colaboración con el INA (Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje). ■

n March of this year, Juan Pablo Álvarez, executive chef of the Castillo’s Kitchen Restaurant in Ojochal, traveled with Mr. William Ortíz, president of ANCH (National Association of Costa Rican Chef) and Roberto Guillen, a young chef who also belongs to the Board of Directors of ANCH, to Lima Peru. They participated in the Jatum Culinary Championship that was carried out at the San Martín de Porres University in the Faculty of High Cuisine and Gastronomy. Juan Pablo’s presentation was a dish, called “Corcovado”, integrating a lobster with native products such as: the endemic tacaco, “pejibaye” and “culantro coyote.” Presidents and representatives of gastronomic associations of Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, Nicaragua and the Peruvian host of course, came to the competition. There were also exhibitions by Thomas Gugler, president of World Chefs (with 100 member countries), as well as several continental directors. Juan Pablo is not only proud to have known a country like Peru that stands out for its incredible cuisine, but also to acquire two certifications that indorse that he meets the highest international standards. He also says “participating in Jatum with white suits and medals provides a sense of leadership. We learned both about sustainability in the kitchen and the commitment that a chef should have with his area, for example not buying foodservices but purchasing everything fresh from the local producers. A chef can be like a rock star,” Pablo continues, “using his notoriety to achieve great changes in the way we eat, think and even understand each other.” Pablo’s purpose is to encourage other youth to enroll in ANCH so they can participate in the trainings. Eventually he would like to bring or create a Gastronomy School in the South Pacific in collaboration with INA (National Learning Institute). ■

n 1991 Virginie y sus padres emigraron de Canadá para comenzar una nueva vida en el Sur de Costa Rica, precisamente en un pequeño pueblito de nombre Ojochal. Recuerda Virginie que era la única niña extranjera en su escuela donde tuvo que aprender el español a la fuerza. Un pasatiempo que ya le había gustado en Canadá fue recortar muñecas de papel, vestir y adornarlas. Un amigo le enseñó cómo trabajar con alambre y ella comenzó a crear sus primeras joyas. Después de 20 años, regresó con sus tres hijas por primera vez a Canadá donde llevó a cabo estudios aeroespaciales y trabajó como inspector en una empresa aeronáutica, empleo muy exigente donde un requerimiento esencial era la extrema exactitud y precisión. De regreso a Ojochal ha comenzado a dedicarse a la creación de joyas muy exclusivas. “Lo importante para mí es que cada pieza de la colección sea única como cada persona es única,” dice. “Lo más difícil ha sido llevar un negocio y atender a la familia y la casa. Estoy agradecida por el apoyo de mi hija menor tanto moral como por su ayuda”. Poco a poco Virginie se ha forjado un nombre con su pequeña empresa Unicity Jewel. Lo que más le gusta es ver sus piezas en otra persona. “Así me parecen aún más bellas!” Trabaja con piedras de la India, Tailandia, Brasil y África utilizando plata y cobre. Ninguna de sus piezas es soldada. Admiramos entre muchas una piedra muy especial, traída de Alberta Canadá llamada Ammonlite, la que tiene una fuerza energética increíble. Virginie hace creaciones personalizadas y recupera joyas rotas. n 1991 Virginie and her parents emigrated from Canada to start a new life in the South of Costa Rica, in a small town called Ojochal. Virginie remembers that she was the only foreign girl in her school where she had to learn Spanish mandatorily. A pastime that she had enjoyed in Canada was to cut out paper dolls, dress and adorn them. A friend taught her how to work with wire, and she started creating her first jewelry. After 20 years she and her three daughters returned to Canada. She committed herself to aerospace studies and worked as an inspector in an aeronautical company, a very demanding job where an essential requirement was extreme accuracy and precision. On her return to Ojochal she dedicated herself to the creation of very exclusive jewelry. “The important thing for me is that each piece of the collection is unique as each person is unique,” she says. “The most difficult thing has been to run a business and take care of the family and the house. I am grateful for the support of my youngest daughter, both morally and for her help.” Little by little, Virginie has forged a name with her small company Unicity Jewel. What she likes most is to see her pieces on another person. “That’s when they look even more beautiful to me!” She works with stones from India, Thailand, Brazil and Africa using silver and copper. None of her creations are welded. Among many, we admire a very special stone, brought from Alberta, Canada called Ammonlite, which has an incredible energy force. Virginie makes personalized creations and recovers broken jewelry.

Tomando elementos de Zumba y Arriba, motivó a su grupo de bailarines a moverse hacia el sonido y vibrar de alegría. “Zumba me ayudó a dejar de fumar hace 4 años y medio, y ahora estoy llevando una vida muy activa nuevamente”, nos dijo. “Desafortunadamente, mi perro Freud, de 14 años y medio, murió hace solo unas semanas. Todavía me duele el corazón”. Cuando surgió la oportunidad de contribuir con DAWG (Grupo de Bienestar Animal Doméstico), ella y sus bailarinas acordaron al unísono: Apoyaremos esta gran iniciativa. Entonces, al final del curso, las donaciones llenaron una cajita especialmente preparada. Sud en Ojochal proporcionó espacio en su restaurante y salón. Aquí durante una cena es donde dichas contribuciones fueron entregadas a Shawnell Parker, quien quedó muy sorprendida ya que hasta el momento no sabía de qué se trataba la reunión. “Estoy muy impresionada por la generosidad del grupo. Estos fondos son muy apreciados para cuidar de nuestros perros y gatos huérfanos”, dijo la presidenta de DAWG. Sandy y John Miller se casaron en Montezuma, estuvieron buscando un hogar en Costa Rica por los últimos 15 años. Finalmente se sintieron muy atraídos por la ciudad de Ojochal, donde la gente es tan amable y siempre saluda a todos. “Volveremos en noviembre, es una promesa”. ■

Sandy Segal, a fitness trainer from Cobourg, Ontario, returned to her beloved Ojochal sharing her passion for dancing with the neighbors of the little town. Taking elements from Zumba and Arriba, she motivated her group of dancers to move to the sound and vibrate with joy. “Zumba helped me to quit smoking 4 ½ years ago, and now I am leading a very active life again,” she told us. “Unfortunately my 14 ½ year old dog Freud died only a few weeks ago. ienvenido a nuestro santuario, de nombre IRESCUEWILDLIFE. Es un refugio con una misión diferente a cualquier otro refugio de vida silvestre en Costa Rica. Si bien la mayoría de los santuarios se centran en el importantísimo trabajo de devolver la vida salvaje rehabilitada a la jungla, en Irescue estamos dedicados a una misión igualmente importante pero muy diferente: brindar cuidados duraderos y alojamiento a una clase de vida silvestre muy especial. Estas son las criaturas de la jungla que nunca pueden ser devueltas a la selva debido a una discapacidad permanente o una domesticación severa. Algunos de nuestros residentes han perdido un ala, una pierna o un ojo. Las leyes de Costa Rica prohíben estrictamente la posesión de cualquier criatura salvaje como mascota. Cuando MINAE descubre animales o aves que están en cautiverio ilegal, se los confisca y se los lleva al santuario de vida silvestre más cercano. damente, estos animales pueden ser liberados nuevamente a la naturaleza, pero siempre hay algunos que no pueden regresar debido a sus lesiones o porque dependen completamente del cuidado humano para sobrevivir debido a la domesticación excesiva. Si el santuario se enfoca en liberar los animales no se estará preparado para albergar aves y animales de forma permanente. Y pronto, la cantidad de residentes permanentes comienza a aumentar y reduciendo drásticamente los recursos de la institución y afectando la eficiencia para retornar los animales a la vida silvestre. Ahí es donde entra en juego nuestro santuario. Nuestra misión es socorrer estas criaturas no liberables y proporcionar a cada una un hábitat diseñado a medida que les permita vivir lo más parecido a su hábitat normal. Al mismo tiempo, aliviamos la presión sobre los santuarios de liberación que les permite ser más eficientes en su misión. ■

An Animal Sanctuary in Ojochal

elcome to the Irescuewildlife sanctuary, a shelter with a different mission from any other wildlife refuge in Costa Rica. While most sanctuaries are focused on the very important work of returning rehabilitated wildlife to the jungle, at Irescue we are dedicated to an equally important but very different mission, providing lasting care and housing for a very special class of wildlife. These are the jungle creatures that can never be returned to the rainforest because of permanent disability or severe over domestication. Some of our residents have lost a wing or a leg or an eye. The laws of Costa Rica strictly forbid the possession of any wild creature as a pet. When animals or birds that are in illegal captivity are discovered by MINAE, they are confiscated and brought to the nearest wildlife sanctuary. Creatures that have been injured by dogs or cars are found are taken to a refuge, as well. Hopefully, these animals can be freed back to the

wild, but there are always some that cannot return because of their injuries or because they are completely dependent on human care for survival due to over domestication. If the sanctuary is focused on releasing the animals back to the jungle, it will not be set up to house birds and animals on an on-going basis. Soon, the number of permanent residents begins to increase and this begins to cut into the resources of the institution and affects the efficiency to get animals back into the wild. That is where our sanctuary comes in. It is our mission to support these un-releasable creatures and provide each one with a custom designed habitat that gives them a life as close to normal as possible. At the same time we relieve the pressures on the release sanctuaries and allow them to be more efficient in their mission of liberation. ■

hether you are a buyer or a seller it is important to have a current survey study. Even though the property is recorded within the national registry, you still need to verify the boundaries to see if they are in accordance with the existing survey plan. Many times they do not match for a number of reasons. For example, fence lines can be installed incorrectly, rivers have changed their paths, or it was not recorded accurately in the first place. If there is a structure on the property you need to verify that it conforms with the local zoning regulations. If you are planning to sell your property we recommend that a current survey study is performed to identify any possible problems, and to remedy them before marketing your property. If they cannot be corrected, then at least you are able to disclose this fact to potential buyers. If you are planning to buy a property, it is very important that you receive a current survey study.
