ir France ha creado una nueva división llamada Joon. A partir de este otoño, ofrecerá vuelos de recorridos medianos y eventualmente largos desde París.

Esta nueva compañía apunta a los “Milenials”, la generación de 18 a 35 años de edad cuyas vidas giran en torno a la tecnología y que perciben ingresos significativos. Con esto en mente, Joon, una nueva línea aérea de marca ha sido diseñada para sus necesidades y aspiraciones. Joon no será de bajo precio ya que ofrece las cualidades originales de Air France, marcada por un estilo de vida y estado de ánimo.

Pronto usted podrá ver un cambio en el tipo de viajero que viene a la zona del Pacífico Sur. Muchas compañías aéreas están utilizando una gran variedad de estrategias de marketing para sus clientes para promover Costa Rica como un destino.

Air France no es la única que apunta a los “milenials”. De hecho, otras aerolíneas estarán trayendo a los viajeros de «Generación Y». La nueva demografía se caracteriza por un mayor uso y familiaridad con la tecnología digital, los medios de comunicación y las comunicaciones.

Copa Airlines ha pedido 15 aviones Boeing nuevos. El avión MAX 10 será lanzado, convirtiendo a Copa en la primera aerolínea de Latinoamérica en operar el nuevo avión MAX. Southwest Airlines acaba de comenzar una venta de vuelos sin escalas desde y hacia San José. Esta promoción comienza el 5 de noviembre con el inicio de la temporada de invierno. Las ciudades incluidas son Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Baltimore / Washington, DC. Thomson Airways, una compañía de chárter británica ha reducido los precios de su ruta de Londres a Liberia. Este es un vuelo semanal con una capacidad de 291 pasajeros. Los datos del Instituto de Turismo de Costa Rica indican que Inglaterra es la cuarta mayor fuente de turismo de Europa.

El destino del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica tiene que estar visible a estos viajeros, y nosotros en Ballena Tales vamos a estar listos para mostrárselo. ■

With this in mind, Joon, a new brand airline has been designed for their needs and aspirations. Joon will not be low priced since it offers the original qualities of Air France, but is branded as more of a lifestyle and state of mind.

Soon, you may be seeing a change in the type of traveler coming to the south Pacific area. Other airlines are using a large variety of marketing strategies for their clients to promote Costa Rica as a destination.

Air France is not the only ones to target millennials. In fact, all of these airlines will be bringing in the “Generation Y” travelers. The new demographic is marked by an increased use and familiarity with digital technology, media and communications.

Copa Airlines has ordered 15 new aircrafts from Boeing. The plane MAX 10 will be launched, making Copa the first airline in Latin America to operate the new MAX aircraft.

Southwest Airlines just began a sale on non-stop flights to and from San Jose. This promotion begins Nov. 5 which starts their winter season. Cities included are Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Baltimore/ Washington, DC. Thomson Airways, a British Charter has reduced prices its route from London to Liberia. This is a weekly flight with a capacity of 291 passengers. The Costa Rica tourism board’s data indicates that England is Europe’s fourth largest source of tourism here.

¡Bienvenida a las aves migratorias!

os meses de agosto y setiembre siempre tengo la vista puesta en el cielo, en la arena de las playas y las desembocaduras de los ríos para descubrir a la primera ave migratoria que llega a nuestra región. Incluso antes de que comience el otoño en Norteamérica miles de aves se preparan para su viaje anual con el fin de encontrar su soñado paraíso, su área para invernar en el trópico o en Sudamérica, donde un clima más apacible les espera.

Algunas aves, como las tangaras veraneras (Piranga rubra) o las oropéndolas de Baltimore (Icterus galbula) aparecen súbitamente entre las copas de los árboles con una llamarada de colores rojos, anaranjados y amarillos, mientras que otras como los zarapitos y los alzacolitas, llegan con colores más discretos a refugiarse en nuestras riberas.

En grupos llegan los patos canadienses (Anas discors), muy fáciles de encontrar en el curso bajo del río Uvita y pequeñas lagunas. También es tiempo de rapaces, ya que más de 4 millones de ellas cruzan los cielos de Costa Rica, y así esperamos cada año el regreso de aves tan impresionantes como las águilas pescadoras (Pandion haliaetus).

¿Conoce al pequeño chorlito dorado menor (Pluvialis dominica)? Esta pequeña ave bate récords, recorriendo más de 40.000 kms cada año, de los cuales 3.900 kms son sobrevolando mar abierto, de forma que no puede parar para alimentarse o comer. ¡Y es un pájaro de apenas 200 gramos!

Otro viajero famoso es el colibrí garganta de rubí (Archilochus colubris), una miniatura de menos de ocho centímetros capaz de cruzar 500 millas sobre las aguas del golfo de México en un trayecto nocturno que puede durar entre 18 y 22 horas.

No es de extrañar pues que también muchas personas imiten a estas aves y decidan migrar durante el invierno norteamericano a nuestro maravilloso país, donde el clima es benigno todo el año y la comida siempre deliciosa y abundante. Claro, que el viaje en avión es mucho más rápido y menos peligroso que la travesía de nuestras emplumadas amigas.

Les esperamos para el I Festival de Aves Migratorias de Pérez Zeledón los días 14 y 15 de Octubre en Santa Elena del General, Corredor Biológico Alexander Skutch para celebrar este fenómeno. ■

Welcome Migratory Birds!

D

uring the months of August and September, I always have my eyes on the sky, the sand of the beaches and the river mouths to discover the first migratory bird that reaches our region. Even before the fall begins in America thousands of birds prepare for their annual trip in order to find their dream paradise, their wintering area in the tropics or in South America, where a more benign climate awaits them.

Some birds, such as the Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) or the Baltimore Oriol (Icterus galbula) appear suddenly among the treetops with a red, orange and yellow flare, while others such as the Whimbrel and the Spotted Sandpiper arrive with more discreet colors to take refuge on our banks.

The Canadian ducks (Anas discors) arrive in groups. They are easily found in the low course of the Uvita River and small lagoons. It is also time for raptors, as more than 4 million of them cross the skies of Costa Rica. So each year we await the return of birds such as the impressive Osprey (Pandion haliaetus).

Did you know the little American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica)? This small bird beats records, covering more than 40,000 kms each year, of which 3,900 kms are flying over open sea, so that it cannot stop to feed or eat. This is a bird of only 200 grams!

Another famous traveler is the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). This miniscule bird of less than eight centimeters is capable of crossing 500 miles over the waters of the Gulf of Mexico in an overnight journey that can last between 18 and 22 hours.

It is not surprising that many people also imitate these birds and decide to migrate during the American winter to our wonderful country, where the climate is benign all year long and the food always delicious and abundant. Of course, a plane ride is much faster and less dangerous than the crossing of our feathered friends.

We await you at the 1st Migratory Bird Festival of Perez Zeledon on October 14 and 15 in Santa Elena del General, Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor to celebrate this phenomenon. ■

¡No es un caimán sino un lagarto!

Not a Caiman But a Lizard!

V

ery often I hear visitors say: “look a caiman!”, although our sign marks “Dracaena guianensis or the caiman lizard” also called water tegu. They inhabit seasonally flooded lowland forests, swamps and margins of rivers and streams at the Amazon Basin of Brazil and Peru.

These semi-aquatic lizards certainly do look like caimans, maybe not the head, but their body scales resemble those of crocodilians. On their back they have though raised scutes, which can cause lacerations when handling them.

They even swim alike with their long tails that are flattened sideways. Their eyes are equally adapted for swimming and seem to have goggles with a third clear eyelid that allows them to see underwater. The coloration of the reptile is bright green with some darker banding which again makes people think they are caimans.

Plus, in the wild they share the same habitat with these big predators.

Dracaena guianensis

The head of the male caiman lizards is typically red, the one of the female only shows some orange around the eyes. Both sexes have very bulky heads and powerful jaws and teeth!

These are used to crush their prey like snails, crawfish and clams. The shell fragments are expelled with their tongue.

During the dry season, when the flooded forests dry out, these lizards are often seen in trees, looking for insects and possibly bird eggs.

Caiman lizards are oviparous. This means that they lay eggs.

In the wild it often happens in termite nests. At Reptilandia they are bred every year successfully. They are kept in big enclosures, especially designed for the needs of this species, they have branches for basking and a nice pool for swimming.

Other animals from their habitat, like the crocodile tegu (Crocodilurus amazonicus), the mata mata turtle (Chelus fimbriatus) and Amazonian fish join them in their daily activities. ■

Habitan los bosques de tierras bajas inundados estacionalmente, los pantanos y los márgenes de los ríos y arroyos de la cuenca amazónica de Brasil y Perú.

Estos lagartos semi-acuáticos ciertamente parecen caimanes, tal vez no la cabeza, pero sus escalas corporales se asemejan a las de los cocodrilos. Sin embargo, en su espalda tienen placas huesudas elevadas, que pueden causar laceraciones al manipularlos.

Incluso nadan igual con sus colas largas que se aplastan lateralmente. Asimismo, los ojos están adaptados para nadar, éstos parecen tener gafas, con un tercer párpado claro que les permite ver bajo el agua. La coloración de los animales es de color verde brillante, con algunas bandas más oscuras que hace pensar a la gente que son caimanes.

Además en la naturaleza comparten el mismo hábitat con estos grandes depredadores.

La cabeza de los lagartos caimán machos es típicamente roja, la de la hembra sólo muestra algo de naranja alrededor de los ojos. ¡Ambos sexos tienen cabezas muy voluminosas, poderosas mandíbulas y dientes! Estos los utilizan para aplastar a sus presas como caracoles, langostas y almejas. Los fragmentos de la cáscara serán expulsados con su lengua. Durante la estación seca, cuando los bosques inundados se secan, estos lagartos se ven a menudo en los árboles, buscando insectos y posiblemente huevos de pájaros.

Los lagartos de Caimán son ovíparos, esto significa que ponen huevos. En la naturaleza esto ocurre a menudo en los nidos de termitas. En Reptilandia cada año se crían con éxito. Se mantienen en grandes recintos, especialmente diseñados para las necesidades de esta especie, tienen ramas para tomar el sol y una bonita piscina para nadar. Otros animales de su hábitat, como el cocodrilo tegu (Crocodilurus amazonicus), la tortuga mata mata (Chelus fimbriatus) y el pez amazónico los unen en sus actividades diarias. ■

Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre

E

l 14 de junio del 2017, en París, Francia, el Programa de la UNESCO Hombre y la Biosfera designó la cuenca del río Savegre y gran parte del área circundante como «Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre». La nueva reserva es un ejemplo impresionante de biodiversidad que contiene el 20% de las especies de plantas, el 54% de las especies de mamíferos y el 59% de las especies de aves que se encuentran en Costa Rica.

Hay 12 ríos, 7 manglares, 21 arroyos, una isla y una laguna.

Se representan hábitats que van desde la reserva marina de Manuel Antonio hasta el páramo a 3400 metros de altitud.

Dentro de sus fronteras se encuentran dos parques nacionales, cuatro refugios nacionales de vida silvestre, una reserva forestal, una zona protegida, una reserva biológica, partes de tres corredores biológicos y al menos 20 reservas privadas informales. Hay más de 50 km de litoral costero desde Manuel Antonio hasta el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barú y el Río Barú. La superficie total es de 312.914 hectáreas (733.227 acres).

Hasta la fecha hay 683 reservas de biosfera en todo el mundo, ubicadas en 120 países. La Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre es la cuarta que se nombra en Costa Rica. Aunque la designación

es internacional únicamente las leyes de Costa Rica se aplican a la zona. El gobierno y los habitantes son los responsables de promover y mostrar un estilo de vida acorde con el desarrollo sostenible. Aproximadamente 50.000 personas viven y trabajan dentro de la reserva en una variedad de actividades incluyendo la pesca deportiva, la agricultura, la ganadería, la piscicultura, el turismo de aventura y el turismo ecológico.

El proyecto para realizar la declaratoria de Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre por la UNESCO fue iniciado en 2011 en la comunidad de San Gerardo de Dota. Un año más tarde, la Asociación Amigos de la Naturaleza del Pacífico Central y Sur (ASANA), organización que fundó el Corredor Biológico Paso de la Danta en 1990, se unió al proyecto y asumió un papel de liderazgo. El 8 de julio de 2017, el presidente costarricense, Luis Guillermo Solís, inauguró formalmente la Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre y declaró el 3 de noviembre como día nacional anual de la Reserva de la Biosfera. La Reserva de la Biosfera Savegre limita con Costa Ballena uniéndose ambas en el Río Barú. La asombrosa biodiversidad y muchas atracciones están cerca y disponibles para nuestros residentes e invitados. ■

NESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program designated the Savegre River basin and much of the surrounding area as “The Savegre Biosphere Reserve”.

A truly impressive example of biodiversity, it contains 20% of the plant species, 54% of the mammal species, and 59% of the bird species found in Costa Rica. There are 12 rivers, 7 mangroves, 21 streams, 1 island, and 1 lagoon. Habitats ranging from the Manuel Antonio marine reserve to paramo at 3400 meters (11,155 feet) of altitude are represented. Two national parks, four national wildlife refuges, one national forest, one protected zone, one biological reserve, parts of three biological corridors, and at least 20 informal private reserves are found within its boundaries. There are over 50 km of coastline from Manuel Antonio to Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge and the Barú River. The total area is 312,914 hectares (733,227 acres).

ara la mayoría la mención de los términos «temporada baja» y «temporada de lluvias» no suenan muy atractivos. Claro que disfruto mucho de un día de cielo azul, pero me encanta también esta temporada por el hecho de que es de poca visitación. Aquí la razón porqué usted debería disfrutarlo también.

Los visitantes confirman que están impresionados por las interminables playas vírgenes en este paraíso del surf, la oportunidad de observar las ballenas, la proximidad de las montañas, la naturaleza y la amabilidad de la gente. Si usted está necesitando un descanso, viajar por Costa Rica durante la temporada baja es relativamente barato. Muchos hoteles y aerolíneas nacionales tienen tarifas de temporada verde, ofreciendo un 20-50% de descuento. No son sólo el traslado y el alojamiento son más económicos, sino también que la menor cantidad de turistas permite reservas de última hora.

Abrase al hecho de que vivimos en una selva exuberante con temperaturas tropicales y disfrute de los magníficos aguaceros y tormentas eléctricas! Los ríos traen nueva vida a la selva previamente seca y sedienta. El sonido de la lluvia simboliza la nueva vida, el crecimiento y la abundancia. ■

o most people the terms “low season” and “rainy season” are not very attractive. Sure, I enjoy a blue sky day, but I love this season as well for the fact that it is “low” and “rainy.” Here is why you should too.

Visitors confirm that they are still impressed by the endless virgin beaches in this surfing paradise, the opportunity for whale watching the proximity of the mountains, nature, and the very friendly people. If you are ready for a break, traveling in Costa Rica is relatively cheap during the low season. Many hotels and national airlines have “low season rates” offering a 20-50% discount. Not only are the travel and lodging accommodations cheaper, less tourism also allows for last minute reservations.

During these months, it is also a great chance to enjoy your favorite local bars and restaurants. Now is the time to eat out!

Lines, reservations or waiting for a table is not something you’ll find in the wet season.

In countries that receive a lot of precipitation, the term “rainy season” can come across negative. However, on much of the planet water is scarce, and people suffer through droughts.

Here on the Ballena Coast we are fortunate enough to have clean drinking water. While the majority of Latin American countries have to buy bottled H2O, we can safely drink it from the tap via town aqueducts or private well systems.

Embrace the fact that we live in a lush jungle with tropical temperatures and enjoy the magnificent downpours and thunderstorms! Surging rivers bring new life to the previously dry and thirsty jungle.

Baile de Los Negritos ~ La Mura

E

l comercio de esclavos negros era común en todas las colonias españolas. Alrededor de 1580-1600 africanos fueron importados a Costa Rica y utilizados como arrieros en el “camino de mula” de Cartago a Panamá. Pasando por los pueblos indígenas de Quepos, Boruca y Terraba, se les suministraba comida y arrieros indígenas. Esto conllevo a entrecruzamiento entre los negros y los indígenas. Los niños eran entonces conocidos como mestizos, una persona que tenía un doble patrimonio cultural y descendencia.

Una tradición en Boruca es el “Baile de Los Negritos” o “La Mura”. Mura es el nombre mestizo de la mula; Esta tradición representa una fusión entre Boruca y el catolicismo.

A partir de la medianoche del 6 de diciembre hasta el amanecer, los participantes las caras pintadas de color carbón, bailan en forma de círculo y de repente de manera lineal, al ritmo del tambor, la flauta y el acordeón.

Esta solicitud hace que los anfitriones de cada casa les den chicha (una bebida fermentada) y tamales.

En tiempos pasados, esta tradición tenía un vínculo más estrecho con las actividades religiosas de la comunidad. El 8 de diciembre, la comunidad celebra la fiesta de su patrona, la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción.

El Baile de los Negritos no reúne tantos seguidores como la Danza de Diablitos. Por desgracia, se enfrenta al riesgo de extinción. ■

lack slave trade was common in all the Spanish colonies. Around 1580 -1600 Africans were imported into Costa Rica, and used as muleteers on the “mule road” from Cartago to Panama. Passing through the indigenous villages of Quepos, Boruca, and Terraba, they were supplied with food and indigenous muleteers. There was interbreeding between the Blacks and the Indigenous. The children were then known as Mestizo, a person who had a dual cultural heritage and descent.

A tradition in Boruca, is the “Baile de Los Negritos” or “La Mura”. Mura is the Mestizo name for mule; this tradition represents a mixture between Boruca and Catholicism.

Beginning December 6 at midnight till dawn, the participants with their charcoal colored faces, dance in the form of a circle and suddenly in a linear way, to the rhythm of the drum, flute and accordion.

biente, no están excluidas de tener accidentes debidos a las actividades humanas o por padecimientos comunes de su especie, por ejemplo, infección por parásitos, que pueden causarles debilitamiento grave y hasta la muerte.

Gracias a la acción de las personas de las comunidades cercanas, preocupadas por el bienestar de la vida silvestre y con un adecuado tratamiento en el Santuario Alturas, se han logrado rehabilitar y liberar gran cantidad de estas hermosas aves.

Sin embargo, antes de hacer un rescate, debemos preguntarnos primero, ¿de verdad este animal necesita ayuda?, en ocasiones, la acción humana interrumpe los procesos naturales, como cuando los pichones están aprendiendo a volar, sus padres siempre están cerca para rescatarlos, por lo que no se debe tocar al animal a menos que corra peligro.

Es con este tipo de acciones en conjunto lograremos crear conciencia ecológica para asegurar la continuidad biológica y un ambiente sano para los animales que dependen de nuestra asistencia. ■

osta Rica es uno de los países con mayor biodiversidad en el mundo. Sus recursos marino-costeros poseen una variedad de formas de vida que atraen a los visitantes, tanto nacionales como extranjeros, quienes desean conocer especies y eventos naturales como el desove de tortugas marinas y la migración de ballenas. Además, pueden disfrutar de observación de otras especies en los exuberantes bosques costeros.

Muchas veces, lamentablemente, los animales silvestres sufren accidentes o bien, son víctimas de eventos naturales como enfermedades.

Por fortuna, existen centros de rescate de vida silvestre, como el Santuario Alturas, que se ubica cerca de áreas silvestres protegidas de gran importancia en el Pacífico Sur, como son los parques nacionales Corcovado y Marino Ballena. Además de especies comunes en la zona, como pizotes y mapaches, entre otros, se han atendido en el lugar especies marinas, como tortugas, gaviotas y pelícanos. Estas últimas, si bien son aves bastantes comunes y se adaptan fácilmente a las condiciones cambiantes del am-

osta Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Its marinecoastal resources possess a variety of life forms that attract both national and foreign visitors. They are interested in local species and natural events such as spawning of sea turtles and migration of whales. In addition, they can enjoy observing other species in the lush, coastal forests.

Unfortunately, many times wild animals suffer accidents or are victims of environmental consequences such as diseases.

Fortunately, there are wildlife rescue centers, such as the Alturas Sanctuary. It is located near protected wilderness areas of great importance in the South Pacific, which are the national parks Corcovado and Marino Ballena.

In addition to species common in the area such as coatis and raccoons, among others, it has assisted marine varieties such as turtles, seagulls and pelicans.

Although they are fairly common, birds can adapt easily to changing conditions of the environment. However, they are not excluded from accidents due to human activities or common diseases of their orders. For example, a parasite infection can cause them to weaken quickly and die.

Thanks to the actions of the people in the surrounding communities, concerned with the well-being of the wildlife, the Alturas Sanctuary has been able to adequately treat, rehabilitate and release a great number of these birds.

However, before making a rescue, we must first ask ourselves, does this animal really need help? Sometimes, human actions are disturbances of natural processes. For instance when chicks are learning to fly, their parents are always close to rescue them. So you should not touch the animal unless they are in danger.

It is with these types of actions as a whole that we are creating ecological awareness to ensure biological continuity and a healthy environment for the animals that depend on our assistance. ■ Piquero patirojo (Sula sula)

Reserva Marina “Alvaro Ugalde Víquez” “SOS ... SOS ... SOS ...: Una súplica al Gobierno de Costa Rica y a todos los amantes del oceano: delfines, John Tresemer ballenas, tortugas, tiburones y toda la vida extraordinaria en el mar de la Península de Osa de Costa Rica están en peligro!” Este fue el mensaje de alarma de don Alvaro en el año 2015 antes de morir.

Decía que los atuneros y otras actividades pesqueras comerciales los están matando, tenemos que hacer algo para salvar estos verdaderos milagros de la Creación de la extinción, Mañana será demasiado tarde! Ha llegado el momento de actuar para salvar este extraordinario tesoro. Y debemos actuar ahora!”

E

n la actualidad, estos tesoros vivos del Pacifico Sur de Costa Rica continúan siendo extinguidos indiscriminadamente por atuneros cerqueros, arrastreros camaroneros, palangreros y redes de agalla, y de paso amenazados por el creciente presencia de agroquímicos en el mar.

La idea de don Alvaro era protegerlo todo mediante el establecimiento de un área marina protegida.

La zona protegida propuesta, elegida por biólogos marinos nacionales e internacionales por su riqueza biológica única, y como lo confirmaron docenas de estudios científicos de primera categoría de muchas organizaciones independientes como el Centro de Ciencias Tropicales, Mar Viva, Keto, Pretoma, el Centro de Investigación Cascadia, incluye un área desde Punta Uvita a unas treinta millas hacia el oeste mar afuera y hacia el sur frente a la costa de Isla de Caño, así como toda la costa de Corcovado, a lo largo del sistema de manglares y estuarios de Terraba/Sierpe, el cual es el más grande en América Cen-

tral con protección internacionalmente designada por RAMSAR y de la UNESCO. Esta iniciativa fortalecería las antes mencionadas áreas protegidas, fomentaría el turismo, la pesca artesanal y deportiva. Prohibiría únicamente prácticas perjudiciales para la salud y la supervivencia de las poblaciones no sólo de especies carismáticas como delfines, ballenas y tortugas, así como otras ecológicamente y comercialmente valiosas que garantizarían la subsistencia de los pescadores artesanales y sus familias de manera sostenible a largo plazo.

Don Alvaro Ugalde era mi amigo y un personaje muy especial. Creo que nos conocimos a principios de los años ochenta en una pequeña oficina en algún lugar en una caja de hormigón típicamente urbana en San José, rodeada de enormes masas de seres humanos apresurados y de ruidosos vehículos echando humo, razones obvias para mí para evitar ir. Él y su amigo Mario Boza eran ambientalistas de vanguardia y el sueño de Alvaro, después de décadas de proteger sin descanso a las especies, los hábitats

y ecosistemas, era seguir haciéndolo.

Los conocí apretujados en sus reducidos cubículos pertenecientes al Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería, obsesionados con el establecimiento, la estructuración y la gestión de un Departamento de Parques Nacionales, haciendo volteretas para consolidar Corcovado, lo que incluyó expropiar tierra de campesinos.

Afortunadamente, la mayoría de estos pura vida costarricenses parecían comprender el valor más alto de dejar la selva majestuosamente intacta con sus jaguars, peccaries, tapires, monos, cientos de especies de pájaros, de anfibios, de reptiles y de insectos, incluyendo muchas formas de vida endémicas; en lugar de cortar y quemar para convertir la antigua selva en pasto.

Al principio don Alvaro y yo no nos entendimos muy bien, él me veía como un arrogante idealista hippie con poca paciencia por la manera costarricense de cómo se tenían que hacer las cosas, y yo lo veía como un burócrata académico con demasiado sesgo terrestre, con tendencia a los estudios científicos y no para el activismo. Después de unos años aprendimos a tolerarnos y a coo-

perar, finalmente nos hicimos buenos amigos.

Recuerdo la ocasión que me senté frente a él y observaba su mirada seria, mientras trataba de obtener su apoyo para prohibir la desagradable pesca de delfines con arpón, para ser utilizados como cebo para tiburones. Actividad que presencié en varias oportunidades desde el mirador pacífico y a veces idílico de mi propiedad costera entre la Cola de la Ballena en Punta Uvita y Ballena al sur.

Buscaba ayuda también para proteger la Isla de Caño, de las excavadoras y motosierras enviadas por algún desconocido desarrollador internacional, que soñaba con su casino. Los árboles estaban siendo derribados, el tractor estaba listo para pisotear y raspar la meseta cubierta de bosque y de sitios arqueológicos precolombinos conteniendo exquisitas figuras de oro y jade.

Los arrecifes circundantes y las cuevas submarinas y los pináculos eran prístinos y repletos de enormes rayas manta, tortugas carey, escuelas de barracudas, pargos rojos, tunas y varias especies de tiburones y delfines. Nada de esto estaba protegido.

Rápidamente me di cuenta de lo impor-

tante y valioso que era Álvaro y qué honor y privilegio era trabajar con él y Mario, tanto en comités gubernamentales como no gubernamentales que representaban los intereses compartidos de indivíduos y organizaciones.

Tuve el placer de presenciar este dúo dinámico con valentía implacablemente abriendo camino a través de incomprensibles bosques nubosos burocráticos, estableciendo el Servicio de Parques Nacionales, incluyendo como áreas legalmente protegidas Corcovado, Isla del Caño, Isla de Coco, Parque Nacional Marino Ballena y Las Baulas.

El establecimiento de zonas de protección marina era muy importante en aquella época en la historia de la humanidad cuando la conservación marina todavía no era considerada tan importante o vital como la conservación terrestre, por casi todas las organizaciones ambientales como Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund y otros.

Don Alvaro y don Mario (a ninguno de los dos les gustaba llamarse «don» aunque las costumbres sociales costarricenses dictaban esta formalidad – que yo no sabía entonces); gracias al reconocimiento de su labor obtuvieron el muy respetado y apreciado título de “Padres

de los Parques Nacionales de Costa Rica”. También don Mario sería internacionalmente honrado con el prestigioso Premio Getty para la Conservación.

“Alvaro Ugalde Víquez” Marine Reserve ”SOS ... SOS ... SOS ...: A plea to the Government of Costa Rica and all lovers of the ocean: dolphins, whales, turtles, sharks and all the extraordinary life in the sea of the Peninsula of Osa de Costa Rica is in danger”. This was Don Alvaro´s alarm message in 2015 before he died.

He said that tuna fishing and other commercial fishing activities are killing them, and that we have to do something to save these true miracles from the Creation of extinction. “Tomorrow will be too late! It is time to act and save this extraordinary treasure, and we must act now!”

A

t present, these living resources of the South Pacific continue to be indiscriminately extinguished by purse seiners, shrimp trawlers, long liners and gill nets, and are threatened by the growing presence of agrochemicals at sea.

Don Alvaro’s idea was to preserve everything by establishing a protected marine area.

The proposed protected zone was chosen by national and international marine biologists for its unique biological richness, and as confirmed by dozens of top-notch scientific studies from many independent organizations such as the Tropical Science Center, Mar Viva, Keto, Pretoma, and Cascadia Research. It includes an region from Punta Uvita about thirty miles to the west offshore and southward off the coast of Caño Island, as well as the entire shoreline of Corcovado, along the mangrove and estuarine system of Terraba / Sierpe, which is the largest in Central America with protection internationally designated by RAMSAR and UNESCO. This initiative would strengthen the above-mentioned

protected areas, promote tourism, artisanal and sport fishing, only prohibiting practices detrimental to the health and survival of populations not only of charismatic species such as dolphins, whales and turtles, but as well as other ecologically and commercially valuable species that would ensure the long-term sustainability of artisanal fishermen and their families.

Don Alvaro Ugalde was my friend and a very special character.

I think we met in the early eighties in a small office somewhere in a typically urban concrete box in San Jose, surrounded by huge masses of hurried human beings and noisy smoking vehicles, which are some of the reasons I’ve tried to avoid going there.

He and his friend Mario Boza were avant-garde environmentalists and Alvaro’s dream, after decades of relentlessly protecting species, habitats and ecosystems, was to continue to do so. I met them crowded in their small cubicles belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, obsessed with the establishment, structuring and

Fortunately, most of these pura vida Costa Ricans seemed to understand the highest value of leaving the jungle majestically intact with its jaguars, peccaries, tapirs, monkeys, hundreds of species of birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects, including many forms of life, instead of cutting and burning to turn the ancient jungle into pasture.

At first, Don Alvaro and I did not understand each other very well. He saw me as an arrogant hippie idealist with little patience for the Costa Rican way of doing things, and I saw him as an academic bureaucrat with too much land bias, and a tendency to scientific studies and not to activism. After a few years we reluctantly learned to tolerate each other and to cooperate, and finally became good friends.

On one occasion, I sat in front of him and watched his earnest gaze as I tried to get his support to ban the harpooning of dolphins to be used as bait for sharks. Several times, I had witnessed these incidents from the peaceful and sometimes idyllic viewpoint of my coastal property between the “Cola de la Ballena” at Punta Uvita and Ballena to the south.

I also sought help to protect Caño Island from the excavators and chainsaws sent by some unknown international developer, who dreamed of his casino. The trees were being felled, while the bulldozer was ready to trample and scrape the wooded plateau and pre-Columbian archaeological sites containing exquisite figures of gold and jade. The surrounding reefs with underwater caves and pinnacles were pristine and replete with huge manta rays, hawksbill turtles, schools of barracudas, red snapper, tuna and various species of sharks

and dolphins. None of this was protected.

I quickly realized how important and valuable Alvaro was, and what an honor and privilege it was to work with him and Mario on both governmental and nongovernmental committees that represented the shared interests of individuals and organizations.

I had the pleasure of witnessing this dynamic duo with relentless bravery plowing through incomprehensible bureaucratic cloud forests, establishing the National Park Service, including Corcovado, Isla del Coco, Isla de Coco, Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and Las Baulas as legally protected areas.

The establishment of marine protection zones was very important at that time in the history of mankind when marine conservation was not yet considered as important and vital by almost all environmental organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund and others as terrestrial conservation.

Don Alvaro and Don Mario (neither of them liked to call themselves “don” or “sir” in English “although Costa Rican social customs dictated this formality, which I did not know at the time). Thanks to the recognition of their work obtained the highly respected and appreciated title of “Parents of National Parks of Costa Rica.” Also Don Mario would be internationally honored with the prestigious Getty Prize for Conservation.

Bueno, para empezar es importante entender que la intención no es basada en el futuro como un objetivo, sino más bien en creencias y valores. Alcanzamos metas mientras que nuestras intenciones son claras. Las metas están diseñadas para lograr un resultado posterior, mientras que las intenciones son compromisos o planes que hacemos en el momento de alinearnos con el mundo que nos rodea.

Es común pensar en ello como parte del mismo proceso. Basados en la intención, creamos nuestros objetivos pero, dejados a solas, la intención puede ser una práctica poderosa por sí misma. Y es una manera de expresar continua-

scar Zeledón fue un atleta, hombre de negocios, un esposo cariñoso y un buen amigo para una vasta gama de personas. Él solía navegar por los círculos sociales con un carisma que podía conquistar a casi cualquier persona. Si no, capturaría su atención con un nivel de entusiasmo que simplemente no se podía ignorar.

Fue inspirador.

Creo que Oscar era consciente de algo que muchos de nosotros olvidamos. La intención importa más de lo que pensamos. Mientras que la verdadera intención puede ser superada por otras fuerzas considere esto: Sin intención, la acción y la energía que ésta requiere es esencialmente una capacidad almacenada hasta que se invoca de nuevo.

Dicho de otra manera, buena o mala, la intención es el catalizador que lleva la

Intention Matters

O

scar Zeledon was an athlete, businessman, loving husband and dear friend to an amazing variety of people. He navigated social circles with a charisma that could win over almost anyone. If not, he would capture their attention with a level of enthusiasm they simply could not ignore. It was inspiring.

I believe Oscar was aware of something many of us forget. That intention matters more than we think. While it’s true intention may be overcome by other forces consider this: without intention, action and the energy it requires is essentially just stored capacity until called upon.

Put another way, good or bad, intention is the catalyst that calls reality into action. Without it the rest is just potential, a vast collection of parts of the equation.

So where does intention come from? Well, for starters its

important to understand intention is not future-based like a goal but rather present-based on your beliefs and values. We ‘reach’ goals while intentions are ‘set’. Goals are designed to achieve a later outcome while intentions are commitments we make in the moment to align with the world around us.

It’s common to think of them as part of the same process.

Based on intention we create our goals but, on it’s own, intention can be a powerful way to practice who we are and wish to be, right now.

Like all of us, Oscar had many goals and it’s sad to think of what did not come to pass. On the other hand, his intention to engage with people purely for the joy of connection brought many of us closer together.

Thank you Oscar, for the reminder and inspiration. You will be missed! ■

Manos jóvenes

l igual que la cara, las manos son una parte importante del cuerpo que pueden causar una buena o mala primera impresión. Es una zona muy visible que requiere de cuidados para lucir bien. No solo hablamos del largo de las uñas y su cuidado, sino más bien del aspecto de la piel, su hidratación, humectación y turgencia.

Conforme envejecemos, perdemos en todo el cuerpo, elasticidad y volumen tanto de los huesos como de los tejidos blandos. En las manos, la piel se torna delgada, seca, arrugada y manchada. Pero, no solo eso nos afecta, sino que al perder volumen se hacen más visibles y prominentes los vasos sanguíneos y los tendones.

Por lo tanto, para mantener las manos jóvenes debemos cuidarnos, mantener una dieta balanceada basada en frutas y vegetales frescos, con suficiente proteína y una adecuada ingesta de agua. Humectarse las manos constantemente es de gran importancia.

As we age, we lose firmness and volume of both the bones and soft tissues throughout the body. The skin of our hands becomes thin, dry, wrinkled and stained. That not only affects our appearance, but the loss of volume blood vessels and tendons become more visible and prominent.

Therefore, to maintain your youthful hands, we must take care of ourselves, eating a balanced diet based on fresh fruits and vegetables, with enough protein and adequate water intake. Moisturizing your hands constantly, as well as protecting them from exposure to the sun is of great importance.

In addition, there are treatments that can be performed that greatly improve the appearance of the hands. Chemical peeling and fractional dermabrasion procedures renew the skin. One of the most popular treatments for rejuvenating hands is the dermal filler. Los Kleshas - El cambio es la única constante en la vida

E

l concepto de “kleshas” (venenos) proviene de la filosofía ancestral del yoga reuniendo las fuentes principales del sufrimiento humano. En los próximos artículos analizaremos cada uno individualmente. En breve, los “kleshas” son aflicciones que nublan nuestras mentes y se manifiestan como pensamientos, emociones o comportamiento negativo. El camino del yoga intenta llevarnos a un estado presente, de manera que podamos identificar cuando estos disturbios mentales controlan nuestras vidas.

El primer Klesha es “Avidya” (ignorancia). Avidya afirma que tenemos cierta incapacidad de ver las cosas como realmente son, y que tal vez estamos tan cegados por nuestro sistema de creencias y pre acondicionamiento que olvidamos nuestra verdadera naturaleza, afectando así la forma en que tratamos y juzgamos, tanto a nosotros mismos como a los demás.

En términos generales, tenemos la tendencia de medir nuestro valor (y el de los otros) basado en cómo nos vemos, que posesiones tenemos, el estatus social, nivel de educación, etc.

Una característica principal de esos aspectos es que son impertinentes y tienden a cambiar conforme la vida sin ninguna garantía de cuánto tiempo estarán con nosotros. Al transcender esta ignorancia y reconocer que somos y que no somos, podemos realizar que no hay necesidad de sufrir cuando perdemos aquello que alguna vez tuvimos, como nuestra juventud, o buena apariencia. No hay necesidad de preocuparnos por no tener el trabajo, el dinero, o la fama que creemos que debemos tener para ser felices. Al igual, significa dejar de juzgar a otros con base en estos estándares.

Superar Avidya nos ayuda a saborear aquellas sustancias imperdurable de la vida mientras las tenemos accediendo a dejarlas ir si fuese necesario. Como alguna vez dijo Heraclito: “El cambio es la única constante en la vida”. Así que una de las mejores manera de encontrar gozo verdadero es aceptando los cambios constantes de la vida y reconociendo que la felicidad no debería buscarse en lo impermanente. Namaste! ■

he concept of “Kleshas» (poisons) comes from ancient yoga philosophy encompassing the main sources of human suffering. In the next articles we will analyze each individually. In short, the “kleshas” are affliction that clouds our minds and manifest in negative thoughts, emotions or behavior. The yoga path aims to bring a state of presence so we can identify when those negative disturbances are controlling our lives.

The first Klesha is “Avidya” (ignorance). Avidya states that we have an inability to see things the way they really are. Maybe we are so blinded by our preconditioning and belief system that we forget our true nature. So it affects the way we treat and judge ourselves and others.

In general terms we have a tendency to measure our (or others) value based on superficial aspects such as how we look, what we have, our social status, education level, etc. One main characteristic of those aspects is that they are impermanent They tend to change through life with no guarantee of how long they are going to stay with us. By transcending this ignorance and recognizing what we are and what we are not, we realize that we don’t need to suffer when we lose what we once had like our youth, or good looks; or stress about not having the job, money, or fame we believe we should have in order to be happy. Same as well, we stop judging others base on those standards.

Overcoming Avidya help us to savor those temporary substances while we have them but being open to let them go if necessary.

As Heraclitus said: “Change is the only constant in life” so maybe one of the best ways to find real contentment in life is to accept that it is constantly changing and real happiness should not be seen on what’s impermanent. Namaste! ■

ife is great in Costa Ballena. You might know that already. But can I suggest a way to make it better

still?

Doing for others increases your happiness. And there’s a lot of need for help here: people, kids, the environment, sea turtles, and stray dogs and cats, all need some assistance.

Volunteer opportunities in Uvita might suggest a way to become active in your own community.

This is an exciting time for the Costa Ballena animal rescue community. A large number of residents have become involved, and the original center DAWG, has learned some new tricks. With plenty of puppies, volunteers will be very busy.

Updating its facilities and its brand, DAWG has greatly improved its adoption center. Once a simple canopy for the adoptees, the center has become the “Love Shack”. This underlines DAWG’s new slogan, DAWGisLOVE. And it creates a more fun place for viewing

the animals.

That old canopy is now a delightful play on that hit wedding party song, “The Love Shack”. With an elaborate bamboo exterior and a more comfortable interior resting place for the animals, the strays are also kept cooler in this new viewing area.

by DAWGisLove long time caregiver extraordinaire, Jackie.

An expert in all types and uses of bamboo, Jackie’s “Family” lives on a large bamboo farm in Uvita. The Centro Veterinario, has generously allowed DAWisLOVE to use the installations for TEN years!

And the best part are the lovable puppies, kitties, and fabulous “used dogs”.

Now, you are starting to see the possibilities for giving in your community!

Hechos: El Parque Nacional Marino Ballena (PNMB) se encuentra en Bahía Ballena, Costa Ballena y pertenece al Área de Conservación Osa. Abarca 15 km de playa vírgenes desde la desembocadura del río Morete hasta Punta Piñuela. Fue declarado Parque Nacional Marino por decreto ejecutivo en febrero de 1989 y se ampliaron sus límites en julio de 1992. Posee una extensión terrestre de 171 hectáreas terrestres y 5,375 hectáreas marinas.

Explorando el parque El objetivo del PNMB es conservar el rico ecosistema marino y sus preciosos paisajes. Dentro de sus aguas podemos encontrar formaciones geológicas muy interesantes, como playas

de arena o de roca, acantilados e islotes.

En su parte externa hay una fila de pequeñas islas y rocas sumergidas, que inician en la famosa Cola de la Ballena, también un tómbolo de arena de unos 700 mts de largo por el cual durante la marea baja, se puede caminar entre las dos enorme bahías disfrutando de una vista de 360° sobre el mar, las playas y las montañas.

Es el arrecife de coral más grande en la costa del Pacífico de América Central y forma un collar de media luna con las tres pequeñas islas conocidas como Las Tres Hermanas y la isla Ballena. Sus terrazas albergan una gran cantidad de hábitat para un sinfín de especies marinas compuestas por corales, ballenas y delfines, tortugas marinas, peces, estrellas de mar, moluscos, cangrejos, abanicos de mar y esponjas, entre otros.

Protegiendo los arrecifes coralinos y manteniéndolos sanos estamos cuidando de un ecosistema único y rico, que es zona de crianza y reproducción de muchas especies marinas. ■

Facts: The Marino Ballena National Park is located in Bahía Ballena, Costa Ballena and belongs to the Osa Conservation Area.

It covers 15 km of pristine beaches and extends from the Morete river mouth to Punta Piñuela. In 1989 it was declared a national park and its limits extended in 1992. The land area is more than 284 acres and 13,276 acres of sea.

Exploring the park The focus of the Marino Ballena National Park is to preserve the rich marine ecosystem, and its pristine landscape value.

In its warm waters, we find very interesting geological formations, such as sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and small barren islands.

Offshore there is a row of small islands and submerged rocks, starting at the famous Whale Tail. The sand isthmus of about 770 yards (700 meters) long, can be walked at low tide between the two large bays. It features a 360 ° view over the sea, the beaches, and the mountains. It is the largest coral

reef on the Central America Pacific coast, forming a crescent necklace with three little islands known as The Three Sisters and Ballena (Whale) Island. The terraces are home to a large amount of habitat for countless marine species comprising 18 species of coral, whales and dolphins, sea turtles, fish, starfish, mollusks, crabs, sea fans and sponges, among others.

By protecting the coral reefs and keeping them healthy, we take care of a unique and rich ecosystem, which is a breeding and reproduction area for many marine species. â&#x2013;

Las ballenas jorobadas, acrobáticas y poderosas

El tamaño promedio de una ballena jorobada puede ser comparado con el de un autobús. Las hembras son ligeramente más grandes que los machos y pueden alcanzar hasta los 19 metros de largo.

En dos migraciones al año, las ballenas jorobadas emigran a Costa Rica, ya sea desde el Océano Pacífico Norte o desde los océanos del hemisferio sur. Ellas vienen a dar a luz y cuidar a sus crías recién nacidas en las cálidas aguas del Pacífico Sur. Cada uno a tres años la ballena da a luz a un ballenato.

Es posible que usted pueda observar a la madre jugando con su cría y al macho dando coletazos.

Las madres y sus crías nadan juntas, a menudo se tocan con sus aletas. Los ballenatos son amamantados durante casi un año; tardan cuatro a siete años para llegar a la pubertad y 15 años para alcanzar la edad adulta. Los ballenatos no dejan de crecer hasta que tienen diez años de edad.

Las ballenas jorobadas son conocidas por sus mágicas canciones que son muy complejas y cada población canta su propia y única canción, son sonidos lastimeros que viajan grandes distancias bajo el agua por los océanos del mundo.

Estas secuencias de gemidos, aullidos y gritos a menudo continúan durante horas y horas. Parece que las ballenas jorobadas cantan para comunicarse con los demás y para atraer a parejas potenciales.

Dos veces al año podemos admirar estos felices gigantes a lo largo de nuestra Costa Ballena. Hagamos lo posible por asegurarnos de que las futuras generaciones también puedan disfrutar de esta magnífica experiencia. ■

racias al poderoso golpe de su enorme aletas de cola también conocida como aleta caudal, las ballenas jorobadas (Megaptera novaeangliae) se impulsan ágilmente a través del agua. Frecuentemente catapultan sus 40 toneladas de peso corporal completamente fuera del agua, aterrizando con un tremendo chapoteo.

A una velocidad media de 14 km por hora, son capaces de recorrer el mundo, desde la Antártida hasta el Pacífico. Su resistencia es increíble, hacen el viaje casi sin descansar durante el trayecto de más de 5.000 km en cada migración.

Comen hasta 1,5 toneladas de comida al día y se alimentan de krill, pequeños animales parecidos a los camarones y peces pequeños. No disponen de dientes, sino de un tipo de barbas que atrapan el alimento que ingieren.

Las ballenas jorobadas han desarrollado un método de caza y alimentación a través de una red de burbujas, acorralando masas de presa altamente concentradas. Los cazadores miembros de una familia forman un círculo de 3 a 31 metros de diámetro y unos 15 metros bajo el agua. Entonces las ballenas jorobadas soplan burbujas en formación de espiral que suben a la superficie. El krill se encuentra atrapado en la pared cilíndrica de burbujas y se mueve hacia la superficie del agua en una gigante y concentrada masa que va directamente a la enorme boca de la ballena.

Las ballenas jorobadas emigran anualmente desde zonas de alimentación en el norte cerca de los polos hacia las cálidas aguas de cría cerca de la línea ecuatorial. Cuando emigran, dejan su principal fuente de alimento (krill) atrás y tienen que sobrevivir por hasta seis meses utilizando sus reservas de grasa.

Acrobatic and Powerful Humpbacks Whales years to reach full adulthood. Calves do not stop growing until they are ten years old.

Humpback whales are known for their magical songs, which are complex with each population singing its own unique song, plaintive sounds traveling large distances through the ocean waters around the world. These sequences of moans, howls, and cries, often continue for hours on end. It seems that humpbacks sing to communicate with others and to attract potential mates.

Twice a year we can admire these joyful giants along Costa Ballena. Let´s make sure our future generations will be able to enjoy them. ■

sing their massive flukes (tail fins), the humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) propel themselves through the water, vaulting their 40 tons of body weight completely out of the sea, landing with a tremendous splash.

With average speed of 14 km/per hour, they are capable of migrating the globe, from Antarctica to the Pacific. Their endurance is amazing; traveling over 5000 km during each migration with almost no rest along the way.

They eat up to 1.5 tons of food a day, feeding on krill, tiny shrimp-like animals, and small fish. Without teeth, they have baleen plates that trap the food they swallow.

Humpbacks have developed the hunting bubble-net feeding method, rounding up highly concentrated masses of prey. The hunting members of a pod create a circle of 3 to 31 m across and about 15 m under the water. Then, the humpbacks blow bubbles in a spiral path as they swim to the surface. The krill is trapped in the cylindrical wall of bubbles and moves up to the surface of the water in a giant, concentrated mass, going directly into their huge gobbling mouths.

These mammals migrate annually from southern or northern feeding grounds near the poles to warmer breeding waters closer to the Equator. When they travel, they leave their main food source (krill) and have to survive for up to six months using their own fat storage (called blubber).

The size of an average humpback can be compared to that of a bus. The females are slightly bigger than the males and can reach up to 19 meters in length.

In two different migrations a year, the humpbacks migrate to Costa Rica, either from the North Pacific Ocean or from the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. They come to breed, give birth, and care for their newborn calves in the warm waters of the Southern Pacific. Every 1-3 years a calf is born to a female.

If you go on a whale-watching trip, you might see the mother and calf playing while the bull is tail slapping. Mothers and their young always swim together, often touching one another with their flippers. The calves nurse for almost a year. It takes four to seven years for the whales to reach puberty, and 15

l 4 de agosto 2017, en la Escuela La Uvita, se llevó a cabo el Festival Estudiantil de las Artes del Circuito 04 de la Dirección Regional de Educación de Pérez Zeledón. 351 estudiantes de las instituciones educativas desde la Escuela Carlos Luis Valverde Vega en la Palma hasta la Escuela Líder La Flor de Bahía participaron.

El tema para el 2017 era Amor, Vida y Arte para una Ciudadanía Planetaria, procurando motivar el uso de la libertad de expresión de los estudiantes en cualquiera de las 46 disciplinas artísticas que componen este festival. Las obras, basadas en los conceptos generales de amor, vida y arte tenían el fin de promover la ciudadanía planetaria, buscando impulsar los valores de desarrollo sostenible, educación ambiental, derechos humanos y habilidades para la convivencia asertiva.

Este evento artístico estudiantil tuvo lugar en el Salón de la Iglesia Católica de Uvita. La organización estuvo a cargo de la Escuela La Uvita, que se encargó tanto de la logística como de la atención de las diferentes delegaciones. La decoración del salón giró

alrededor de la conservación de nuestras especies marinas. Como una manera de contribuir con el ambiente, se sirvió el almuerzo en hojas de plátano evitando el uso de productos desechables.

Los estudiantes, tanto de primaria como secundaria, demostraron sus talentos en artes escénicas (teatro, danzas folclóricas, bailes populares, bailes internacionales, solistas, cuentacuentos y pasacalles), artes musicales (bandas, cimarronas, ensamble de flautas, ensamble vocal y estudiantina), artes literarias (cuento, poesía, retahílas, fotonovela, etc.) y artes visuales (dibujos, pinturas, murales, máscaras, grabados, diseños, etc.).

Cada institución realiza su propio festival para elegir a sus representantes en la etapa circuital y en ésta, se seleccionan los representantes del circuito en el festival regional. En esta ocasión se tuvo la participación del 100% de las instituciones, 32 de primaria y 2 de secundaria. Fue una verdadera fiesta llena de mucho talento infantil y juvenil. ■

n August 4, the Student Festival of Arts, Circuit 04 of the Regional Direction of Education in Pérez Zeledón was held at the Escuela La Uvita.

351 students from educational institutions from the Carlos Luis Valverde Vega School in La Palma to the Leader School Flor de Bahía participated.

The theme for 2017 was Love, Life and Art for a Planetary Citizenship, trying to motivate the use of students' freedom of expression in any of the 46 artistic disciplines that make up this festival. The works, based on the general concepts of love, life and art in order to promote planetary citizenship, seek to promote the values of environmental education, sustainable development, human rights, and skills for assertive coexistence.

This artistic student event took place in the Catholic Church Hall of Uvita. The School La Uvita was in charge of the organization of both the logistics and the attention of the different delegations. The decoration of the room revolved around the conservation of our marine species. As a way to contribute to the environment, a lunch in banana leaves was served in order to avoid the use of disposable products.

The students, both primary and secondary, demonstrated their talents in performing arts (theater, folk dances, folk dances, international dances, soloists, storytellers and parades), musical arts (bands, cimarronas, ensembles of flutes, vocal and student ensemble), literary arts (stories, poetry, word games, etc.) and visual arts (drawings, paintings, murals, masks, engravings, designs, etc.).

Each institution organizes an institutional festival to elect its representatives in the circuit stage and in this one, the representatives of the circuit were selected in the regional festival. On this occasion we had the participation of 100% of the institutions, 32 primary and 2 secondary schools. It was a great party full of children and youthful talent. ■

¡Una ballena de plástico en Bahía!

La iniciativa especial para este evento es "Bahía libre de plástico": un proyecto artístico para sensibilizar a la gente sobre el impacto aterrador y presente de los envases de plástico de un solo uso.

Alban Corrales, miembro de Trincheras Galería Expresión Artística de San Isidro y su equipo construyó una gigantesca ballena con botellas de plástico. Tiene 9.20 mtrs. de largo, 2mtrs. de alto y 6 mtrs de ancho. Los materiales de construcción fueron suministrados por empresas locales y las botellas vacías fueron suministradas por hoteles, restaurantes y operadores turísticos. Cada día 10-20 jóvenes voluntarios trabajaron juntos para crear este símbolo del Festival de Ballenas.

La ballena se exhibe en el "Campo Ferial" del Festival, cerca de la entrada del Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. Los visitantes son bienvenidos. La gente puede ingresar a la ballena para admirar los mensajes significativos que se colocaron allí, referidos a las trágicas consecuencias para el océano ocasionadas por los residuos de plástico.

En el día mundial de los océanos, el 8 de junio, se fundó el proyecto "Bahia libre de Plástico". he Festival de Ballenas y Delfines 2017 (Whales and Dolphin Festival) an annual occurrence in Marino Ballena National Park, is taking place on the weekends 15-18th, 23-24th and 30th of September to 1st of October 2017.

The special initiative for this event “Bahia free of plastic” started an artistic project to make people aware of the terrifying and all present usage of single-use plastic containers.

Alban Corrales, member of Trincheras Galería Expresión Artística from San Isidro and his team constructed a gigantic whale out of plastic bottles. It is 9.20 mtrs. long, 2mtrs. high and 6 mtrs wide. The building materials were provided by local businesses, and empty bottles were supplied by hotels, restaurants and tour operators. Every day 10-20 young volunteers worked together to create this symbol of the Whales Festival.

The whale is exhibited at the “Campo Ferial” of the Festival, close to the Marino Ballena National Park entrance. Visitors are welcome. People can enter the whale´s mouth to admire meaningful messages that were placed there. They concern the plastic waste and its tragic consequences for the ocean.

On world oceans day, the 8th of June, the project “Bahia libre de Plástico” was founded. Educando sobre mariposas

T

anto para niños como para grandes las mariposas tienen un sinfín de enseñanzas, por ejemplo, existe una tendencia en confundir las orugas con los gusanos, o en creer que las arañas son insectos.

Cabe recordar, que las “orugas” son larvas en un estadio previo a su metamorfosis y disponen de patas a diferencia de los “gusanos” quienes carecen de patas y no realizan ninguna transformación.

Algunos llegan a pensar que si tocas a una mariposa se muere o que no tienen importancia en el ecosistema. De ahí que educar sobre mariposas, se ha convertido en una gran herramienta de sensibilización ambiental para estudiantes de escuelas cercanas y visitantes de la Reserva Playa Tortuga.

Las mariposas reciben el nombre científico de lepidópteros (alas escamosas), porque sus alas están recubiertas por miles de escamas diminutas e imbricadas. Pertenecen al orden de los insectos y como insectos, poseen un par de ante-

nas, un par de ojos compuestos, dos pares de alas y tres pares de patas que a diferencia de los arácnidos (arañas y escorpiones) con cuatro pares de patas, o los miriápodos (mil pies y ciempiés) con un par de patas en cada uno de sus segmentos corporales.

Otro dato interesante es la metamorfosis, una gran transformación durante su ciclo de vida, dividiéndose en cuatro estadios, huevos, orugas, crisálida y mariposa. Las mariposas depositan sus huevos en plantas hospederas donde nacen las larvas u orugas, las cuáles se alimentarán de estas plantas con sus mandíbulas hasta convertirse en pupa, en ese estadio permanecen un tiempo realizando su transformación hasta que emerge una mariposa, la cual ya no tendrá más mandíbulas, si no que se alimentará de líquidos como el néctar o frutas con una nueva estructura llamada “proboscis” o trompa.

Educating about Butterflies

B

oth for children and adults, butterflies contain endless teachings. For example, there is a tendency to confuse worms with caterpillars, or to believe that spiders are insects. Some even think that if you touch a butterfly it dies or that they are not important for the ecosystem.

Hence, education on butterflies has become a great tool for environmental awareness with students of nearby schools and visitors to the Playa Tortuga Reserve.

The butterflies are given the scientific name of lepidoptera (scaly wings), because their wings are covered by thousands of tiny and imbricated scales. They belong to the order of insects who have a pair of antennae, a pair of compound eyes, two pairs of wings, and three pairs of legs. Unlike them, arachnids (spiders and scorpions) possess four pairs of legs, or the miriápodos (thousand feet and centipede) with a set of

legs on each one of its corporal segments.

Another interesting fact occurs in metamorphosis. This great transformation during its life cycle, is divided into four stages, eggs, caterpillars, chrysalis and butterfly. The butterflies deposit their eggs in host plants from where the larvae or caterpillars are born. They will feed with their jaws from these plants until they become a pupa. Remaining there a while they wait before making their transformation to an emerging butterfly. It will no longer have jaws, but it will feed on liquids like nectar or fruit with a new structure called “probosicis”.

Remember that the “caterpillars” are larvae in a stage prior to their metamorphosis and have legs unlike the “worms” who lack legs and do not perform any transformation.

Un gran logro: La Bandera Azul Ecológica

l galardón de Bandera Azul Ecológica (BAE) es un distintivo otorgado anualmente, que premia el esfuerzo y trabajo voluntario, en búsqueda de la conservación y el desarrollo acorde con la protección de la naturaleza, la mitigación al cambio climático, la mejora de condiciones higiénico sanitarias de los habitantes de Costa Rica, promoviendo la organización comunitaria y de comités locales para el beneficio de las presentes y futuras generaciones.

Actualmente, la comunidad de Ojochal se ha comprometido a promover acciones en pro a la conservación, registrándose en tres (Comunidades, Playas y Centros Educativos) de las 14 categorías promovidas por el Programa Nacional de Bandera Azul (PNBA).

En el 2016, Ojochal ganó por segundo año consecutivo el galardón BAE Categoría Comunidades, considerando que desde el 2015 y hasta la fecha es la única comunidad trabajando esta categoría en el Cantón de Osa. Para el 2017, se acordó registrar las Playas Tortuga y Ventanas en el PNBA Categoría Playa.

Ambas categorías (Comunidad y Playas), realizan actividades como recolección de residuos en las Playas Tortuga y Ventanas mensualmente, limpiezas del Río Balso, charlas de educación ambiental, talleres dirigidos a vecinos de la comunidad, acciones de reforestación y contra incendios forestales; muchas de

ellas en articulación con el comité BAE de Escuela Tortuga, instancias gubernamentales y ONG´s.

El nivel de compromiso y organización de la comunidad facilita y motiva a que en el 2017 ganaremos 4 banderas, un gran logro para nuestro pueblo.

A great Achievement: The Ecological Blue Flag

T

he Ecological Blue Flag Award (BAE) is awarded annually to reward the efforts of volunteer work in conservation and development in line with the protection of nature, mitigation of climate change and the improvement of hygienic sanitary conditions for the inhabitants of Costa Rica. It also promotes community organization for local committees to benefit present and future generations.

Currently, the town of Ojochal is committed to promoting conservation of Communities, Beaches and Educational Centers in 3 of the 14 categories promoted by the National Blue Flag Program (PNBA).

In 2016 for the second consecutive year, Ojochal won the BAE Category Communities award. Since 2015 it is the only community working in this category in the Canton of Osa. It was agreed to register the Tortuga and Ventanas Beaches in the PNBA Beach Category in 2017.

Both categories (Community and Beaches) carry out activities such as monthly waste collection in Tortuga and Ventanas

Beaches, cleanings of the Balso River, environmental education talks, workshops aimed at community residents, reforestation and forest fire actions. Many of these are in coordination with the BAE committee of Escuela Tortuga, government agencies and NGOs. The level of commitment and organization of the community facilitated and motivated the initiative to win 4 flags in 2017, which is a great achievement for the town.

The volunteer members of the BAE committees of Ojochal are Melissa Jiménez, Gerardo López, Celustiano Samudio, Wilber Céspedes, Leyla Zuñiga, Karla Reyes, Kathy Sturk, Rita Lucas, Oscar Brenes, Olger Olivares, Santiago Dinarte, Orlando Cespedes, Yanitza Rojas, Bruce Duncan, Russ Oro, Richard Kempkes, Christian Beaulieu , and Lucy Tessier. 17 de Set: 1,5 y 5Km saliendo de Playa Puntarenitas con la meta en Puerto Jiménez.

Dice Diana Duhaime, quien se propone nadar la travesía de los 14km: “Me siento emocionada y honrada de ser parte de este maravilloso evento. Soy cruzrojista certificada y salvavidas voluntaria certificada por la Guardia Costera de Costa Rica desde el 2014, buceadora rescatista certificada con formación en atención médica primaria, primeros auxilios y ex oficial de BASRA (Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association)”.

Y sigue: “La natación es un deporte completo, como una meditación que aclara los sentidos. Sin embargo más dulce es la satisfacción cuando el deporte se pone al servicio de salvar la vida de otros, con un evento de concientización para recaudar fondos a favor de la Unidad de Búsqueda y Rescate Acuático de la Cruz Roja, así como los salvavidas de Costa Rica”.

Sus clases gratis de natación para adultos y niños ayudan a que superen el miedo al agua, aprendiendo a respetar el océano.

Y agrega Diana: “¡Espero verlos a todos en la meta con sus amigos y familia!”. ■

he World Open Water Swimming Series offers a global network of races that attract swimmers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, Olympians, marathon swimmers, disabled athletes and people who just started the sport. The World Open Water Swimming Series extends a global ranking system for people of every age group, encouraging both organizations and athletes to be responsible global stewards of the world’s open bodies of water. Sept, 16th: The Marathon begins at 6:00 a.m. at Parque Piedras Blancas in Puerto Jiménez (14Km).

Sept, 17th: 1.5 and 5Km with the Meta at Puerto Jimenez.

Diana Duhaime, who intends to swim the crossing of the 14km, says: “It is very exciting and an honor to be a part of this wonderful event. I am a Red Cross Certified and Costa Rica Coast Guard Certified Volunteer Lifeguard since 2014. Additionally, I’m a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Certified Rescue Diver, EFR, SOLO Certified Wilderness First Aid & WSI and former BASRA Officer (Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association).”

She states: “Swimming is a complete, sweet sport, a meditation clearing the senses. However, even sweeter is the sport when it is put into service of saving the lives of others with an event to raise money, awareness & support for the Red Cross and the lifeguards of Costa Rica.

Her free swimming lessons help adults and children who want to overcome their fear of water by learning to respect the ocean.

She adds: “I hope to see you all at the Meta with your friends and family!” ■
