PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD It is with great pride and pleasure that I share with you our Lakeside Primary School Magazine, the SG 50 edition. This issue captures school life in 2015 and serves as a parting memento for our Primary 6 graduates. It has been an exciting and fulfilling year. We celebrated the official opening of our Indoor Sports Hall Building on 29 May. It was a day when the dreams of many Lakers came true, after about three years of planning and construction. With the many hours of imagination and hard work, peppered with thoughtful discussion, the learning spaces and facilities, when finally completed, have indeed enhanced Teaching and Learning in many ways. You will be able to catch glimpses of our Lakers in action in this issue. We are in the second year for our Learning for Life Programme in the Performing Arts. We are heartened that our curriculum, which started with the vision for our students to Enjoy Arts and Enrich Lives, has unfolded beautifully. The new Performing Arts spaces have provided motivational boosts for our children as they get more of such learning spaces to put up and enjoy performances. The inaugural recess-time concerts on WOW Wednesdays and the Good Morning Lakeside programmes have been put together to allow our children to build confidence and be good communicators. It has been indeed a satisfying experience as we witness our children grow. We are keenly aware, that what we enjoy now in our school today is possible because we are all nested within a stable, progressive and successful Singapore. Hence, this year, we have celebrated Singapore’s 50th birthday in many ways, to teach our children this important message. In this special edition, these meaningful moments together are captured forever and can be relived every time we flip the pages. We want our children to remember that what we will celebrate at SG100 will depend on them. We build their foundations in life for that. How we do this is through the quality education we provide to nurture wholesome individuals. I take heart that we have a strong team of teachers and support staff working closely with supportive parents, the School Advisory Committee, stakeholders and partners to nurture every child as A Virtuous Leader. A Life-Long Learner. Together, Every Individual C.A.N.!

CONTRIBUTING TO OUR COMMUNITY Members of staff bond over various activities, like our annual “Values in Action” project. This year’s project saw the staff collaborating with different stakeholders, like students, parents and our partners from Chevron Phillips Chemical Asia Pte Ltd, to plant 50 starfruit trees at Chinese Garden on 20 March 2015 to commemorate Singapore’s 50th birthday. Starfruit trees were selected as the five apexes of a Star symbolize the holistic development of a child in the five domains of education: Moral, Cognitive, Physical, Social and Aesthetics.

MOTHER TONGUE MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE (MTL) FORTNIGHT AND CULTURAL CAMP The MTL Fortnight was held from 23 March to 2 April 2015 as part of the school’s efforts in creating an immersive environment for the learning of Mother Tongue Languages. A range of activities related to Chinese, Malay and Tamil languages and culture was conducted.

55

IMTL PORTAL The iMTL Portal is a web-based portal that enhances students’ learning of communication skills in Mother Tongue Languages through self-directed learning. It provides students from Primary 4 to Primary 6 with more opportunities, within and beyond the curriculum time, to learn and use the language in authentic contexts.

10 CMT PORTAL The 10CMT Portal is also used to enhance the reading and speaking skills of our Primary 1 to Primary 4 students. It provides a platform for students to give and obtain feedback on their work.

56

MATHEMATICS The learning of Mathematics in our school is made fun and interesting through the use of manipulatives and authentic learning experiences to make learning ‘come alive’ and make the learning of Mathematics meaningful. Some of our programmes include the Math Trail, Lakeside Minimart and the use of games in learning Mathematics.

Maths Trail

In our daily classroom teaching, we use hands-on manipulatives to help students understand abstract mathematical concepts. The ‘Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract’ approach is used in the teaching of Mathematics as research suggests that there are three representations necessary for pupils to develop understanding of a concept. Reinforcement of the concept is achieved through going back and forth between these representations.

SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENT Experiential learning is an important part of learning Science. Our programmes provide our students with hands-on and authentic learning activities to make Science concepts come alive. The school ecogarden was enhanced as the Outdoor Experiential Learning Area under the PERI upgrading to support teaching and learning.

PRIMARY 5 ENVIRONMENT BOOT CAMP (4 JUNE 2015) The school’s corporate partner, Chevron Phillips Chemicals Asia Pte Ltd, sponsored the Environment Boot Camp which reinforced the importance of reusing plastic and not polluting the environment. Each class put up a skit that conveyed environment messages as part of a competition. Students also worked in groups to re-use plastic bottles to convert them into beautiful decorations like hanging mobiles, pots for plants and wall decorations. The Environment Club students then presented the pots of plants to the residents at the nearby NTUC Eldercare Centre.

CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION (CCE) We provide a positive school experience to enhance the motivation of pupils. Through the integration of values with the curriculum and co-curriculum programmes, we also develop disciplined students who embody the Lakeside values.

Our Character First! Shop allows students to redeem tokens by accumulating the Character First stamps that our teachers award. The stamps are earned when students display school values or exhibit positive behaviour.

A myriad of Empowerment Programmes are also conducted to empower students with life skills and to build character.

A typical school day starts off with Pre-Assembly Values Education (PAVE). PAVE is conducted twice weekly before the start of assembly and has an emphasis on values. Throughout the school day, students learn and develop their Personal Qualities and build their character as they interact with their peers, teachers and school staff. 69

Time is set aside each week to develop our students holistically through a variety of programmes. Some weeks, we have oneto-one interactions between the form / co-form teachers and the students. Other weeks, we have special guests coming to speak to our students.

We also had a special assembly programme to celebrate the 28th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) that were held in Singapore. Our students had great fun interacting with the performers and NILA, the SEA Games mascot! 71

VALUES IN ACTION & INTEGRATED PROJECT WORK (VIA-IPW) We develop students who are active contributors rooted to Singapore and possess leadership skills through our programmes like Values In Action. Values in Action (VIA) is a learning experience in Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). It develops students into socially responsible citizens. It helps students understand themselves better, deepen their values and develop social emotional competencies.

“Values In Action – Action Through Project Work” provides students with the opportunity to put values into action as they embark on their project work. Across the levels, students are assigned various projects.

CELEBRATING AND APPRECIATING ONE ANOTHER 104

MAKE IT A HABIT TO TELL PEOPLE “THANK YOU”. TO EXPRESS YOUR APPRECIATION, SINCERELY AND WITHOUT THE EXPECTATION OF ANYTHING IN RETURN. TRULY APPRECIATE THOSE AROUND YOU, AND YOU’LL SOON FIND MANY OTHERS AROUND YOU. TRULY APPRECIATE LIFE, AND YOU’LL FIND THAT YOU HAVE MORE OF IT. -RALPH MARSTON
