“BUSINESS OF CULTURE, CULTURE OF BUSINESS”
Nurturing Global Leaders for a Sustainable World OURCES • • RES ENV PLE IRO EO N •P
What is Sustainability? For many, sustainability is synonymous with the conservation of natural resources – land, water, energy, minerals – and the debate on climate change. But the scope of sustainability extends far beyond reducing, reusing and recycling. Community interests must also be guarded, and economic viability secured, for long term success. At the Nanyang Business School (NBS), we nurture leaders who understand and balance the interests of people, businesses and the environment – to secure a sustainable future for our world.
Sustainability and Business Sustainability for a company must begin at the core of its business model. How does it operate? How do the interests it seeks to advance impact its operations on the environment and the stock of natural resources? Apart from valuing its employees from the local community, does it also value the greater communal interests of the local people? A company that seeks enduring success must optimise the triple bottom line of people, environment and business.
“We challenge our students to pioneer new paths of success wherever they are, providing technology-enabled learning. Exposing them to real-world scenarios and immersing them in various cultures, we nurture astute, agile and resolute global leaders who are ready to step forward in a dynamic and diverse world.” Dr. K. Ravi Kumar
Shaw Chair Professor and Dean Nanyang Business School
Sustainability and Leadership Although there is a growing awareness of the inadequacies of a one-dimensional pursuit of profit, there is still much to be done to embed sustainability in our governments, businesses and society. Strong and fresh leadership that possesses the knowledge, skills and passion is needed to make a positive impact on the environment and community. Sustainability is more than mere pragmatism. It is an obligation. Just as we stand as beneficiaries of those who came before us, who harnessed physical, economic and social resources to give us this world of opportunity, so too should we ensure a better world for those who come after us. It is this ethos that underpins our mission of Nurturing Global Leaders for a Sustainable World. All rights reserved. Nanyang Business School (Reg. No. 200604393R.)

EMPOWERING BRIGHT YOUNG MINDS. NBS is a premier business school that understands that sustainability is not just a trendy catch-phrase but a responsibility. It is vital for our students, as future business leaders, to recognise and embrace this responsibility early, so that they can do their part in creating a sustainable world. Our goal as an institution of higher learning is to empower bright young minds with the awareness, skills and attitudes that balance success in business with social and environmental responsibilities. The core of our curricula centres on building a foundation of critical and independent thinking, enhancing our students’ ability to learn, grow, lead and serve in their careers, as well as in their lives. Our programmes, acknowleged and endorsed worldwide, are underpinned by real-world relevance, strong industry ties and academic rigour. Our courses cover ethics, leadership, communication skills and environmental responsibility, preparing our students for a brave new business world – one where the only thing constant is change, and one which demands that we strive not only for ourselves and our organisations, but also for the good of the wider community.
ASSOCIATE DEANS’ MESSAGE Associate Professor Low Kin Yew
Associate Dean (Undergraduate Academic)
NBS offers many opportunities for hands-on learning outside the classroom. Our students get a taste of the cut and thrust of the business world through their participation in professional internships and international competitions that simulate real-world business scenarios. They also learn about social and environmental responsibility through service learning projects with not-for-profit organisations. We also encourage the development of leadership skills through student clubs that cater to a wide range of professional and recreational interests.
Nanyang Business School
At NBS, we believe leaders must be able to inspire and manage from anywhere in the world. Our students can strengthen their adaptability, creativity and sensitivity with the diversity of culture that is an integral part of the NBS experience. They can also enjoy an open and vibrant environment, with an international student community and faculty that will enrich every personal academic journey with cross-cultural insights. On top of that, students are also able to experience life abroad through our overseas internships and study exchanges.
NBS equation for success: Passion + Compassion = NBS Global Leader.

Business Analytics (BA) NBS has launched an undergraduate business analytics programme that will prepare students for rewarding careers spawned by the global avalanche of information, better known as Big Data. The course is the first to be offered by a Singapore business school – with the first graduates expected in 2017. It will admit 60 students each year. The programme will open up client-facing career opportunities in management and technology consulting, consumer analytics and marketing, supply chain management, risk management, and business forecasting in a diversity of industries including finance, hospitality, healthcare and retail. Big data and analytics has been identified by the Economic Development Board as an important growth sector for Singapore. By the end of 2017, data analytics is expected to contribute $1 billion to the economy, powered by 2,500 data analytics professionals.
Graduates from the integrated programme will have a competitive edge in securing challenging careers and commensurable salary packages in the finance industry. According to data collected by NTU, as high as 95 percent of the MSc(FE) graduates in the 2015 graduating class, are placed within three months of graduation with an average starting salary of $56,564 per year.
Business analytics will be offered as a specialisation for the Bachelor of Business programme. It will focus largely on business insights, with particular application in business operations, digital marketing, and finance and accounting. It will also provide instruction on data modelling and data management.
Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) Today’s society faces major challenges such as global warming, ageing, catastrophic risks and emerging threats such as cyber-attacks. They have been increasing in magnitude and complexity. To properly execute their job functions, risk managers and insurers need to develop innovative solutions and tools. They need to enhance corporate and personal risk management. In RMI, several insurance courses are intended to cover topics that correspond to the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) units. Successful completion of those courses makes students ready to take corresponding CII examinations.
INTERNATIONAL TRADING PROGRAMME (ITP)
PLATFORM-BASED LEARNING (PBL)
The new ITP track is designed to develop talent to meet the increasing manpower needs of the international trading sector in Singapore. Singapore is Asia’s largest physical commodities trading hub and home to many of the world’s largest commodities trading firms. This means that ITP graduates will always be in demand and relevant to a key sector of Singapore’s economy.
between the classroom and the trading floor, ITP students will also be exposed to stateof-the-art Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg terminals in Singapore’s largest finance lab, located right in NBS.
NBS has a new pedagogical approach known as the Platformbased Learning (PBL). The PBL is designed to enhance our students’ employability in the high-value added sectors of the banking and finance industry. It will help business and finance students acquire necessary analytical skills before entering into the banking and finance sector.
ITP students will acquire a deeper understanding of the entire commodity trading value chain and can look forward to rewarding and internationally oriented careers in the vibrant trading sector.
The new 165m2 lab at NBS, called the Centre for Applied Financial Education (CAFE), is the largest finance lab in Singapore. It is equipped with the industry’s top data analysis tools, such as Bloomberg Professional, and Thomson Reuters’ Eikon and Datastream.
To ensure relevance and currency for trading sector employers, the ITP curriculum is developed through continuous consultation with IE Singapore and the commodity trading industry. ITP students have the opportunity to go on overseas and local study trips, and intern with major trading companies. To bridge the gap
The ITP track is a new track option managed by the Centre of Excellence in International Trading (CEIT) in NBS, and open to Business and Double Degree Accountancy & Business (ACBS) students pursuing the Banking & Finance specialisation.
Business and finance students will acquire the skills to apply financial knowledge through performing market analytics and generating insights for decision making on Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters terminals. These machines are used by financial analysts, traders and investors across the world to obtain and analyse ‘live’ and historical data on financial instruments.
BACHELOR OF ACCOUNTANCY/ BUSINESS WITH MINOR IN STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS Communication strategy is crucial to business success. The Minor in Strategic Communications offers a wide range of courses that complement business education, especially marketing specialisation. This includes courses in public relations, advertising and media planning. Our students will receive conceptual and practical training through communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders within an organisation. They will also learn how to implement market strategy across various media platforms. The Minor carries the standard minimum number of academic units – 15 AU.
Technology Enabled Learning (TEL) Initiative @ NTU Listening to professors on the move, discussing a topic on social media and interacting with peers outside of class, may not be the typical learning activities you would associate with a university course. However, these are some common learning activities you can expect of NTU courses under the TEL initiative. Courses are transformed to include learning activities that provide opportunities for students to attain content knowledge and 21st century skills to prepare them for the global workplace.
For example, the infographic above illustrates how different pre-class, in-class, and post-class learning activities have been designed to engage students in TEL courses. To facilitate such a learning approach, the Hive was designed as a social space that combines learning and recreation, to encourage students, professors and researchers from the various disciplines to come together and interact. It houses 56 smart classrooms in 12 eight-storey towers, and is equipped with flexible clustered seating for small group discussions, multiple LCD screens and wireless communication tools. YOUNG SAP THINKERS
As a collaborative effort with SAP University Alliance, this programme was conducted by Nanyang Business School (NBS) BizlT students at three secondary schools. The programme aims to interest, inspire, and equip youths with data analytics skills to design solutions to build Singapore into a Smart Nation. In addition to knowledge obtained in their own classrooms at NTU, volunteers also went through specialised training by SAP which allowed them to better deliver workshops covering topics such as Big Data, Data Analytics and Design Thinking. To illustrate to the youth that social challenges can be addressed using data analytics, one portion of the programme required students to use electricity consumption and travel data to come up with solutions.

Sichuan Teaching Project This project is a long-term collaboration between the Shuangdong-Nanyang Primary School and Nanyang Business School. In the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, NBS China EMBA alumni provided donations to fund the building of this school. However, the founding project team felt that more could be done for the future of these primary school children and since 2010, NBS students have been conducting English lessons in the school. In 2015, 26 volunteers made a trip to Sichuan and adopted an interesting hands-on approach to ignite and sustain the students’ interest in the Chinese language. Through fun and interactive activities that included games, songs, dances, story-telling and other activities, the volunteers were not only able to build on what the students had already learnt, but also created memories to last for a lifetime. 20

The Business Solutions team at NBS came in overall champions at the recent Asian Business Case Competition (ABCC), held from 13 to 17 September 2015. Held annually, ABCC is Singapore’s first international business case competition, and is the only one that revolves around the theme of sustainability. It is organised by Business Solutions and supported by the Asian Business Case Centre. This year, nine teams from top business schools around the world joined the competition and NTU was one of them.
Team members comprise students from the Double Degree in Accountancy and Business programme (from left): Chau Jun Hao (Year 2), Chien Han Sheng (Year 3), Associate Professor Eugene Kang (Team advisor), Jeremy Chen (Year 4) and Zeng Yi (Year 2).

I.M. PAD
In India, 30% of girls drop out of school once they reach puberty due to the lack of proper menstrual hygiene. This issue, identified during an internship at the World Toilet Organisation, resulted in Innovative and Manageable Sanitary Pad (I.M.Pad) being started by a team of three like-minded students. The team came up with an ingenious solution of producing low-cost and biodegradable sanitary napkins out of the highly absorbent pulp fibre of water hyacinth, an aquatic weed indigenous to rural India. Taking their project one step further, a team member from NBS, Andrew, took a year off from school to develop this idea with an Indian social enterprise, Aakar Innovations. Since then, 11 ‘mini’ factories that produce pads have been started, providing work for about 220 village women. The greatest satisfaction came about when a school supported their outreach efforts and their students now continue to attend classes.
NBS emphasises the importance of sustainability and care for the community. Clubs in NBS were also encouraged to give back to society. The games helped the children to learn about the different countries and their currencies and as a form of motivation, the points earned, can be exchanged for stationeries.
Special thanks to: Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled Blue Cross Thong Kheng Home Sunshine Welfare Action Mission (SWAMI) Home SparkleTots (Jalan Kayu) YMCA My club collaborates with Daybreak Student Care Centre on a Service Learning project annually for needy children. We planned a three-day camp for the children to participate during their holidays. Through this project, I’ve learned to be appreciative of what I have right now and to count my blessings each day.

I led my committee and joined the sub-committee of Elderly Sector Network (ESN) 2015. ESN is a volunteer committee aiming to improve the lives of the elderly in Singapore. It hosts ESN Carnival, an annual event which is tailored specifically to around four hundred elderly people from Singapore. In addition to helping in the event organisation, we also successfully hosted two game booths during the ESN Carnival. NBS has given me the best opportunity to contribute to the elderly sector.

NBS Inflammare Camp 15/16 celebrates SG50 with an event - Project Hopes & Dreams. As one of the camp’s key highlights and initiatives, we brought our incoming freshmen around to different groups of Singaporeans, to forge a bond we would’ve otherwise overlooked. This video captures the fellowship of Singaporeans from all walks of life. We laughed, we danced, we left our imprints with strings of blessings for our Singapore.
The goal was simple: make a sanitary pad which was cheap and effective enough for these women to afford, and even more ambitiously, use materials that are easy to find.

I find that the curriculum in NBS is rigorous and promotes multidisciplinary learning. Students get the chance to be immersed in a variety of teambased project work, presentations and integrative case studies. Recently, classrooms have also adopted the Flipped Classroom approach to promote deeper learning. As a result, students are groomed into creative and critical thinkers who are able to work collaboratively with others to solve problems.

With the Business Library, the Free Access Lab and the Hive, NBS has many quiet study venues suitable for students who wish to study in peace, hold project discussions, or have group study sessions with some friends over coffee. In my hall of residence, I have also met many like-minded and friendly business students. We often study together and help each other rehearse for presentations. To me, the facilities and the people are the reasons why NBS is an environment conducive for learning.

At NBS, there are many low-cost and accessible opportunities available for students. Besides overseas exchange programmes and student clubs activities, there are many case competitions which help to stimulate students’ critical thinking, and allow us to work with our peers as a team on problem solving!
