Is Marriage worth the investment for Men?

According to a new survey by Wilcox and Wolfinger called ‘Men and Marriage, debunking the Ball & Myth chain’, which is: “Marriage is not worth it for men. It’s not worth the practical and financial sacrifices, the lost romantic opportunities, or the “lack of freedom.” But despite the prevalence of this ‘ball and chain view of marriage’ it is simply not supported by the research, say W&W. They explain: Indeed, the benefits of marriage for men are substantial by every conceivable measure, including more money, a better sex life, and significantly better physical and mental health. Yet many men remain ignorant of these benefits, a view seemingly promoted by popular culture, says the report. Citing the following stats to prove their point:

This month’s Healthy recipe

When it comes to work and money, marriage has a transformative effect upon men. Married men typically work harder, smarter, and more successfully. They are less likely to be fired. And they make about $16,000 more than their single peers with otherwise similar backgrounds. When it comes to Sex, while single and married men report having the same amount it’s not the same if ‘quality’ matters. On average, the quality of married sex trumps that of unmarried sex. According to the National Health and Social Life Survey, 51 percent of married men reported they were extremely satisfied with their sex lives, compared to 39 percent of cohabiting men and 36 percent of single men. Physical and Mental Benefits: The report highlights that men who get and stay married live almost 10 years longer than their unmarried peers. What’s more, marriage benefits health in numerous and surprising ways. For instance, a recent Harvard study found that even among men diagnosed with cancer, married men live significantly longer.

DIY HONEY MAMAS CHOCOLATE By Laura Lea Goldberg

8 Slices Total time: 45 min.

Ingredients: **Required: Candy thermometer • 1/4 cup chopped dark chocolate (I use 72%) • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder OR cocoa powder • 3 tablespoons roasted unsalted almonds • 1/4 cup honey • 1/3 cup coconut oil • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • pinch sea salt for garnish

Directions: 1. Line a loaf tin with parchment paper, leaving several inches to hang over the sides. Sprinkle chopped chocolate along the bottom of the loaf tin in an even layer. 2. In a food processor or high-powered blender, combine cacao or cocoa powder and almonds and pulse until it forms a fine crumbly meal; it should be difficult to detect the almonds. Set aside. 3. Add honey and coconut oil to a small sauce-pot and bring to a boil. Add candy thermometer and bring to 250 degrees Fahrenheit or 120 degrees Celsius. Immediately remove from the heat and stir in cacao/almond mixture, as well as vanilla extract. 4. Pour mixture over chocolate into the loaf tin in as even a layer as possible. Tear off any excess paper and freeze for 30 minutes, or refrigerate for approximately an hour, until chocolate is firm and set. Slice into desired pieces and enjoy! Keep leftover chocolate in the refrigerator.

Manduu opens second location in Brentwood A new Manduu Fitness center has opened in Brentwood. Manduu utilizes EMS technology that has been used in orthopedic rehabilitation and other medical applications for years. It results in ”an ultra-low-impact strength fitness program that compresses a comprehensive, full-body workout into just 15 minutes” says the owner Jason Ritzen. Which means a Manduu session can replace six to eight hours of time spent in a traditional gym. “In addition, client’s progress is tracked and analyzed through a stateof-the-art precision body composition scan prior to each session” explains Ritzen. He adds. “Manduu is quick,

it’s discreet, and the data takes the guesswork out of determining what works. Our trainers are passionate about educating clients on their health and fitness, and developing programs to achieve individual goals”.

What happens to a Woman’s Brain when she is pregnant?

Restaurant Review: Paul Rowney

Afternoon Tea at Cafe at Thistle Farms

T According to a report in Brainfacts. org, in 2016, a team of researchers from the Netherlands and Spain used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study what happens inside the brain during pregnancy. Comparing MRI images taken before women became pregnant with images taken after they had given birth, the researchers found pregnancy shrinks the brain’s gray matter. What’s more, the volume loss persisted for at least two years after childbirth. While losing gray matter might seem detrimental, the effect may be quite the opposite. “Everybody always thinks of volume loss as something negative, as a loss of function,” says Elseline Hoekzema, a neuroscientist at Leiden University in the Netherlands and lead author of the

here’s two good reasons to patronize this Cafe: firstly, the food is excellent (more of which later) and secondly you’ll be supporting an excellent cause, I can’t put it better than they describe on their website: “The Café is part of Thistle Farms’ social enterprise, which heals, empowers, and employs women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction”.

study. But volume loss can also represent a “fine-tuning of connections.” The areas that shrink the most play important roles in social cognition and caregiving behaviors. Researchers believe this shrinkage indicates a “fine tuning” of nerve cell connections. The areas of the brain that shrunk the most were those involved in social cognition, the ability to figure out what someone else is thinking and feeling. When a new mom was shown a picture of her baby, these areas of the brain lit up with activity. Enhanced social cognition might help a mother take care of her baby, enabling her to decode the child’s various coos and cries and figure out what she needs, Hoekzema says.

But dispel any notions you may have that this is some amateur non-profit serving up fries and burgers. Far from it. From the moment you walk into the newly renovated spacious, clean and welcoming restaurant you know this is a place where professionalism and pride are also on the Menu. Our group of six had gone for their Afternoon Tea. And as a Brit I guess I can claim some knowledge and experience as to what a good Afternoon Tea should consist of. I’ve been lucky to have sampled this light, mid afternoon meal at some of the best hotels and restaurants in England, and let me tell you, this Cafe’s is up there with the best of them.

The mystery of Mumps resurgence Rising Mumps cases even in vaccinated populations in the United States over the past decade have raised doubts about mumps vaccine efficacy. Researchers examined these outbreaks using mumps vaccine effectiveness data. They found that the increase in mumps cases is more consistent with loss of vaccine protection over time, rather than incomplete protection against an evolving virus population or lack of immune response to the vaccine. Their work also suggested that a third vaccine dose may extend protection, which could prove useful in designing a clinical action plan to prevent the spread of mumps. After decades of declining mumps incidence amid widespread vaccina-

tion, the United States and other developed countries have experienced a resurgence in mumps cases over the last decade. Outbreaks affecting vaccinated individuals and communities with high vaccine coverage have prompted concerns about the effectiveness of the vaccine currently in use. It is unclear whether immune protection wanes or whether the vaccine protects inadequately against currently circulating mumps virus. Routine use of a third vaccine dose at 18 years of age, or booster dosing throughout adulthood, ‘may be a strategy to prevent mumps re-emergence and should be assessed in clinical trials’ say the research authors. A quick history lesson: Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. So the Afternoon Tea was designed to fill that long gap between lunch and dinner with some light, tasty savory and sweet dishes. And here at the Cafe at Thistle Farm they put on a great

selection of both: from the egg salad sandwich (complete with water cress, sublime!), to beautiful quiches, scones with cream and jam (the former with a delightful citrus tang) and then lemon cake, strawberries and more to finish. The choice is bigger than listed here, none disappointed. To complement you have a choice of some pretty exotic teas (no PG Tips here!) to choose from, our favorite was the fearsomely named, but delicately flavored, Iron Goddess of Mercy, delightful with a slice of Lemon, but no milk. The staff were, quite rightly, extremely proud of what they are doing, and the food they create. The service was attentive and efficient (shout out there to Erica our server-great job) and to the other staff member who belted out an impromptu version of ‘Happy Birthday’ in Frank Sinatra style. So forget about all these new restaurants being opened by ‘celebrity chefs’ you’ve never heard of, get down to the Cafe at Thistle Farm where they serve great food for a worthy cause. The Duchess would be proud of them!

The dangers of eating too quickly

PERSONAL ADVICE: ASK DR. LISA

A recent article on www.popsugar. com highlighted to dangers of eating meals too quickly-and offered some suggestions on how to slow down. Author of ‘The Mind Diet’ Maggie Moon explained to writer Isadora Baum. “If you eat too fast you’re adding stress to the body’s digestive system by giving it a large amount of food at once to process” Your stomach is not built to process that much food at once, and it leads to a backlog of work (aka food) to work through, messing with normal metabolism.” It takes about 20 minutes for those natural feedback mechanisms to kick in (basically when you start feeling that full feeling at one point in the meal). When you bypass that process by eating at the pace of a racetrack, the feedback mechanism to your brain is compromised, so you’re left feeling hungry still despite the plateful you might have had, says the article. Tips

What is “fair fighting” in a relationship?

A

ll successful long-term relationships have their fair share of conflict. Conflict is a natural component of emotional intimacy.

Eating too quickly can stress your body.

But too many people shy away from raising their voices or asserting their needs. There are multiple reasons for this, including fear of abandonment, a belief that fighting is a sign of weakness, or simply a desire to not be like other couples who are constantly screaming at each other.

to eat more slowly: Sit down, don’t stand up when you eat. Put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls and drink lots of water. Go to www. popsugar.com for the full story.

At the other extreme are couples who cannot control their emotions — couples for whom every day brings a new, explosive battle. And of course, there are also relationships where one partner is a fighter and the other a peacekeeper. Anger is part of the human condition, and can push us to break free from negative situations. Every healthy relationship involves conflict. That said, when anger occurs over a long period of time, resentment and bitterness result.

Intermittent Fasting – a new way to diet?

Eating at set times can be more effective than normal diets.

A recent article in mindbodygreen. com suggest that ‘Intermittent Fasting’ (IF) can be an efficient and long term way to lose weight. Author Melanie Avalon says “It’s no secret that typical calorie restriction tends to be miserably unsustainable, as determined dieters meticulously log every bite of food

they consume. Many of them end up bingeing or consuming low-calorie frankenfoods in an attempt to fill an ever-expanding ravenous black hole”. She claims there is a way to “indulge without restriction while stoking the fires of your metabolism, boosting energy, saying goodbye to cravings, and likely losing even more weight than with typical dieting’? She continues: “With intermittent fasting you simply restrict the hours you eat each day rather than what you eat. No conscious “dieting” required!” There are many IF approaches, such as the common 16-8 protocol (when you eat in an eight-hour window, for example, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., or 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or the onemeal-a-day pattern (in which you eat everything in one meal, such as lunch or dinner). “But as long as you’re doing it for at least 12 hours, you should get a lot of the benefits” explains Avalon. For the full story go to www.mindbodygreen.com

6. Resist stonewalling. At times retreating and refusing to speak seems like it is the best approach—but this refusal to communicate is called stonewalling. Although it might feel better temporarily the issue will remain unresolved. 7. No yelling. Sometimes arguments are “won” by being the loudest but most times yelling leads to the problem getting worse.

1. Check yourself. Are you angry because your partner left out the milk, or are you upset because you feel like you take care of “everything” and this is one more piece of evidence? Think about what the issue really is before starting an argument.

8. If it gets too hot, take a breather. If an argument starts to become personal or heated, take a time-out. But it is critical to come back and discuss the problem after everyone has cooled down.

3. Watch your language. Discuss the issue, not the person. No put-downs, swearing, or name-calling. Degrading language is often an attempt to express your feelings while trying to attack your partner.

Joke:

5. Have good manners. Be careful not to interrupt your partner. If this is difficult set a timer for 1 minute for each person to speak without interruption. But really listen during the minute— not spend the time formulating a rebuttal. Listen!

Here are 9 tips to help you and your partner “fight fairly”:

2. Focus! Keep the argument on track. Talking about money can easily turn into an assertion that your partner doesn’t care about family. When an argument starts to get off topic, it can easily become about everything a person has ever done wrong.

Subway is definitely the healthiest fast food available because they make you get out of the car

4. Express feelings with words and take responsibility. Starting with “I” is a good technique to help you take responsibility for your feelings (no, you can’t say whatever you want as long as it starts with “I”). For instance, “I feel angry.” “I feel hurt when you ignore my phone calls” are good ways to express feeling.

9. Compromise or attempt to understand. There isn’t always a perfect answer to an argument and one person is not always “right.” Try to come to a compromise, meaning this takes giving from both sides. For more help with fighting fairly, contact Dr. Lisa M. Webb at the Body & Mind Consulting Associates Group: www.bodymindtn.com. 8 ways to cut your Grocery bill By Karina Hammer, Certified Holistic Wellness Coach

The weekly trip to the supermarket is costing more and more, this month Karina Hammer offers some advice on saving those food dollars.

I

n recent years, grocery prices have skyrocketed. Here are some tricks to pinching pennies at the grocery store, while still enjoying nutritious and delicious food:

Some easy anti-aging tips

Eat more beans – Beans are wildly economical and versatile. Beans are also a rich source of protein and fiber. Vegetarian Meals – Eat more vegetarian meals than meat-based meals. Not only are fruits, vegetables and beans less expensive than meat, they provide more enzymes, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are generally considered to be integral to a healthy diet. Chop your veggies – Spend more time than money. In other words, cruise by the convenience foods. Buy a head of romaine lettuce and cut it yourself rather than buying prepackaged salads. Buy in bulk – Bulk bean, grains, fruits, vegetables and meats. You can buy from a bulk distributor or at your local health food store to save money with less packaging. Go local – Buy as many local foods as possible. Produce from local farmers is much fresher and usually less expensive since it spends far less time being transported to your plate.

and many other conditions that can negatively affect your ability to live life to its fullest. There’s no age limit, no drugs, no expensive testing. Age doesn’t matter. This type of care should be available in a much more accessible manner – and now it is”. For more information go to: www.modernacupuncture.com or call 615-395-5033

A great article by Brian Syuki (@ifocusonfitness) on www.care2.com 1. Apply sunscreen when going outside. Research shows that sunscreen can help keep your skin looking younger and even lower risk of skin cancer. 2. Meditate every day. It’ll give you lots of energy and lower your stress levels. Stress is one of the biggest accelerators of aging. It shortens telomeres (a compound that is part of the cell), which consequently shortens your lifespan. 3. Dance to stay young. Dancing may not take wrinkles off your face, but it’ll keep your brain young. According to a recent study, dancing has a stronger antiaging effect on the brain compared to endurance training. 4. Get enough sleep. Research shows that people who don’t get enough sleep

Cook once, eat twice – Make larger quantities of a meal and eat it for lunch the following day. Don’t shop while you’re hungry – You’ll be tempted to stray from your weekly budget with unnecessary items such as potato chips and cookies. Eat a healthy snack like a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit right before shopping. Don’t Stress Out Over Food – Maintaining balance and stress can be a challenge. If you find yourself feeling anxious or overwhelmed when it comes to household spending, try planning your grocery shopping list by using these budget friendly tips before your next supermarket trip. You will be eating healthier, spending less and creating balance at the same time.

have reduced skin elasticity and uneven pigmentation. 5. Sleep on your back. Pressing your face against the pillow causes sleep lines, which can turn into wrinkles as time goes by. The best way to prevent sleep lines is to sleep on your back. 6. Don’t use straws. Straws can come in handy, especially when drinking drinks that are harsh on the teeth like lemon water. However, using them regularly can cause wrinkles around the mouth. 7. Drink plenty of water. Drinking enough water has so many benefits. Water can even boosts mental performance according to a recent study. Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day. Hair Loss Treatment

How hair loss treatment has changed 30 years ago, only the ‘most desperate’ people had hair transplants. Your father’s hair transplant procedure was in its infancy. Very few physicians understood or offered it and consequently the results were – well, not natural. I know because I was one of the most desperate. My name is Michael Ramsey and today I’m the clinic director for one of the most progressive hair transplant clinics in the country. But then, I was a single 30 year old dealing with hair loss and desperate for a solution.

BEFORE

A

t that time hair transplants, also known then as hair plugs, were done in a way that didn’t yield a natural look, especially in a person’s hair line. At that time, surgeons transplanted hair in large clumps, typically 15 to 20 hairs in each bundle or graft. They harvested these hairs from the back of the head where men and women had more hair than needed, and these hairs tended to be permanent when transplanted. Physicians would place these clumps of hairs in rows resembling the hair on a doll’s head or corn field. As you can imagine, there is nothing natural about that. For me the good part was that I had hair again! The not-so-good part was that anyone who looked at me was immediately distracted by unnatural clumps of hair in my frontal hairline. I’d traded a natural balding-look for an unnatural patchy ‘hairin-rows’ look. Fast forward to today and things have improved dramatically. Advancements in technology have touched all areas of life. Thirty years ago none of us used cell phones, the Internet, or probably owned computers. Today, just these three technologies have revolutionized how we live, work and play. In the world of medicine, many surgeries that once required a long hospital stay are now considered outpatient procedures, where patients walk out of

AFTER the hospital the afternoon of their surgery. Ultraadvanced surgical procedures, cell-therapies and robotics now improve patient outcomes while minimizing down time. Researchers using 3-D printers can print a human’s ear, or other organs using a patient’s own cells. Cloning tissue and organs is right around the corner. Unprecedented medical advancements and breakthroughs seem like weekly events on the evening news.

Modern hair loss treatment avoids the old approach of transplanting hair in ‘clumps’. 11

Like these areas of medicine the medical hair restoration field has enjoyed enormous breakthroughs and advancements. In place of the large clumps of hair in rows, robots assist the surgeon in harvesting hairs with no stitches, minimal downtime and precision unmatched by human hands. Today hair transplantation is now a specialized field practiced by board certified, experienced hair transplant surgeons. This field and specialty didn’t exist 30 years ago. Today Stem Cell Treatments, Laser Light Therapy, Scalp-micropigmentation and teams that specialize in the art and science of hair restoration, help men and women dealing with hair loss each day. A practice like ours that specializes in both surgical and non-surgical hair restoration and hair loss management was hardly imaginable then. Now we help patients from across the country with hair restoration. Patients start by receiving a complete hair and scalp analysis. During this portion of the process, the patient’s hair loss, hair and scalp condition, hair quality, overall health, goals and expectations are evaluated and discussed. Most patients have two goals - one is to stop continued hair loss and the other is to fill in areas that have gotten too thin. To stop hair loss we offer several options including FDA approved Low Level Light Therapy, Anagen Specialty hair products and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a Stem Cell Transfer Therapy. To add more hair to thinning areas we offer two hair transplant options: Robotic Follicular Unit Extraction transplantation and Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™ transplantation. Both of these options allow us to fill in thinning areas with permanent, natural growing hair. Additionally, because of advancements in hair transplant surgery, patients that were once poor candidates for the procedure are now often good candidates. More hair can be transplanted at one time minimizing the necessity for more surgeries. Your father’s hair transplant days are long gone. The old hair plugs implanted by pioneering physicians who experimented on each patient have been replaced with natural looking, undetectable hair transplants. Today highly skilled specialized surgeons and medical teams using robotics, stem cells and light therapy help men and women across the country solve their hair loss problem. Now, hair restoration is not only for the ‘most desperate’ men and women. Instead, those even mildly bothered by their hair loss have wonderful options. From simply stopping hair loss to filling in large areas that have thinned or gone bald, today’s modern hair restoration practice can help.

Cover Interview

Haley and Michaels-Music is their therapy! With a hit single and an Album on the way, Nashville’s hottest new music stars found time to discuss with Health & Wellness Magazine how they maintain a healthy work and lifestyle. in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for us and we try to carve out time daily to reconnect with ourselves and each other, whether it’s writing or yoga or even just an intentional break from technology here and there can be helpful. :)

Shannon Haley and Ryan Michaels, “We want to lift spirits with our music”.

H&W:What keeps you so healthy and in-tune with your mind, body & soul, while maintaining such a hectic schedule? We both have daily routines that are grounding for us, whether it be exercise (even if just for 30 minutes), or meditation (even if just for 3 minutes). We have found that balance is key, and we love having a busy lifestyle, so it’s not always possible to stick to our routines. However, it is helpful to have the routine whenever possible. The mind, body, soul connection is definitely important

H&W: Shannon: do you find it difficult to eat healthy and exercise on the road? Yes. Both are more challenging, and I definitely have a harder time exercising daily when I’m on the road. I have a great routine that makes me feel good when I’m at home, but there isn’t always a gym when we are traveling, and there’s not always that extra time in the morning (I’m so jealous that Ryan can just jump out of the shower and in five minutes he’s ready to leave!!). I try to at least take a walk in the morning. I find that even if it’s only for 15 minutes or so it helps me energize for the day. I’ve learned from experience that for me personally, balance is everything. When I get too rigid with myself it backfires. So if it’s just not possible to exercise, or if I have to eat power bars and popcorn from the gas station for dinner, I try not to be hard on myself and trust that everything balances out in the end! H&W: Ryan, I understand you’re Vegan. Do you find it difficult to find Vegan options while on the road? And can you share some of your favorite local Nashville restaurants that offer a Vegan menu? While it is generally more difficult to find specific Vegan restaurants on the road, I have gotten pretty good about being creative and also looking ahead in advance. I eat a lot of rice and beans, salad, oatmeal 14

and as much guac as I can get. But just in case I get stuck, I usually bring snacks like apples, Lara Bars (or all natural bars as long as it’s real food) along with me. I find that I make better decisions when I eat several small meals throughout the day. My favorite Vegan Restaurants in Nashville are The Juice Bar in Brentwood (I love juicing and try to have it at least 5 times a week), Gojo (Ethiopian food), The Wild Cow, Avo, and The Sunflower Cafe. I also really love and appreciate restaurants like Taco Mamacita and Kayne Prime that offer fantastic Vegan options. H&W: Music can also be a huge factor for comfort, therapy and motivation. Is there one song that really gets you pumped up and motivated? Ryan: Living On A Prayer Shannon: Free Falling H&W: Congratulations on the release of your song “Me Too” in support of Tarana Burke’s Me Too Movement. Can you tell us a little about that and why this song is so important to you both? Answer: Thank you! This song is inspired by the profound impact that the Me Too Movement itself had on us. We were deeply affected when so many people bravely came forward and said “me Too”. We were fueled to write the song by our own personal experiences, but the song’s message at its core is all about healing and people coming together to support one another. It is such an incredible honor to have Tarana Burke as a featured artist and collaborator on the song and music video! We have always believed in the healing power of music and we hope this

song can help others feel that they are not alone in the same way the #MeToo Movement has done for us! H&W: Congratulations on being named one of Rolling Stone’s “Top 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know”. How did that make you feel when you learned you made that list and that you were being compared to such well known, respected and talented musicians in the industry? We grew up reading Rolling Stone and still do. It was such an incredible honor to be acknowledged by them and so incredible to be mentioned alongside our favorite artists. Very humbling and thrilling!!

Haley and Michaels, “We’ve poured everything we have into our album and it’s filled with a lot of blood, sweat, tears.”

H&W: We live, work and play in Nashville and love our city. What do you love most about Nashville? Do you want to share any of your favorite hot spots with us? We love Nashville and it’s very exciting to watch

it grow so rapidly. We love how it feels like a big city and a small town all at the same time. More than anything, we love the amazing songwriting community. Some of our favorite hot spots: • Patterson House • Radnor Lake • The Listening Room • Sanctuary Yoga • Frothy Monkey H&W: We know you have had a super exciting year so far with the release of “Giving It All (To You),” “All Out,” and “Me Too.” Any other exciting projects in the works that you could tell us about? We have spent the past year writing and recording our first full length album which will be released by Sony/ATV and Sony/ATV | RED Music label imprint Hickory Records. We are so excited to share it with you!

How Floating can help with your everyday challenges

Are you looking for a tool to help take you to the next level?

Epsom salt is a centuries’ old remedy trusted for its natural ability to ease aching muscles, reduce inflammation, soften skin, and restore the soul. Amy Grimes (pictured) of Float Nashville looks at its many benefits.

ust two cups of the Magnesium-rich mineral turns a familiar bath into a little spa-like luxury. Now, imagine the benefits delivered by 1,000 lbs. of the sulfate diffused into a 10-inch deep and perfectly-tempered 200-gallon bath. It’s a truly serene experience in which time virtually stops. It’s a bliss available to anyone because it exists at Float Nashville, Middle Tennessee’s first flotation therapy spa. Since its grand opening in 2013, Float Nashville has facilitated more than 20,000 of these sublime treatments. Furnished with three tanks (two closed pods and one open), the cutting-edge spa treats new and experienced floaters to the tranquil, albeit unusual, experience of total sensory deprivation.

How does it happen? The water supports the floater’s body enough to make it feel weightless while the tanks themselves block out all light and sound. The experience (or lack thereof) is what floods the body and mind with health benefits. The buoyancy of the salt solution lets the body literally float on top of the water, reducing gravity’s pull by 90%. That reduction of stress delivers unmatched rest and recovery that benefits everyone from professional athletes to chronic pain sufferers. The absence of visual and auditory stimulation encourages a meditative state that’s been clinically proven to reduce anxiety and boost feelings of serenity and peace. When you’re ready to experience rest unlike any you’ve ever felt before, book a float session and get more info at FloatNashville.com. Tel: 615 567 7222

Recently, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Men’s Journal have all touted the tank as a way to enhance athletic performance. It’s not magic or mumbo jumbo. The physiological effects of floatation therapy have been studied and recorded in various research studies over the past 50 years.

Faster Recovery

In a recent study on recovery using flotation therapy results showed flotation appears to have a significant impact on blood lactate and perceived pain compared to a one hour passive recovery session. Floating after workout or after events can make a difference in recovery and ease of movement. It allows you to push your body harder, gaining a competitive edge.

Rapid Healing

Floatation Therapy shows some surprising results on the brain and anxiety In a recent study done by Dr. Feinstein a researcher with the prestigious Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) in Tulsa, OK. he gathered participants and divided them into two groups – those who would float for 90-minute sessions and those who would relax in a chair for the same period of time. He used MRI and water-proof EEG to study participants to evaluate them both pre and post-float. The preliminary results were very promising. They found the highly connected areas of the brain had a huge drop in that connectivity post float. Ninety minutes in the tank affected the brain in the same way that

pharmaceuticals do by turning down the hyped up salience network. The difference? Floating doesn’t have the side effects of the traditional medication. 18

Laying horizontal on a bed of water, with nothing to impede the flow, increases the ease of circulation. Your own body’s healing blood oxygen and nutrients are easily delivered to the site of injury. The pressure of the water is the perfect weight to stimulate the lymphatic system, which is also necessary in the healing process as it carries away toxins and reduces swelling. It has an extra added benefit in that the more lymph circulated, it increases your resistance to illness. Which helps to keep a training schedule on track. With very little stimulus to tax the nervous system, the body has more energy to devote to healing. Science has shown the power of visualizing tasks you want to perform better, and how it affects the outcome. Athletes, musicians and high level performers have been using this simple exercise forever. Doing this practice during floating can improve motor skills and help deepen the mind and body connection.

Essential Oils

Can Essential Oils help with your Allergies? Shelia McGinnis (pictured) this month looks as Spring arrives and everything starts to bloom, at how some Essential Oils could help with your allergies.

O

h, the beauty of spring with all its blooms! But with the beauty, we also have to deal with the itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and stuffy nose, headaches, and rashes! Well did you know that essential oils can be used with success as an alternative and/or complementary treatment for these symptoms? Let me start out with my three favorite stand-bys: Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint. The synergy (where the interaction of two or more substances combined have better effects than the one alone) of these oils help with most allergy symptoms. Lemon boosts alertness and gives you energy as well as helping reduce congestion. Lavender, known as the calming essential oil, does just that. It calms the inflammation process as well as the enlargement of mucous cells. Peppermint,

also known to calm inflammation will help with congestion as well as headaches. The way I prefer to use these together is in a diffuser with distilled water. You can get relief by using it in a carrier oil such as olive or almond oil and rub on the tips of toes on both feet. Can you ingest? Well, there’s a lot of debate on this topic. To be safe, check with medicine reactions and a naturopathic or medical doctor. I have found them safe to use by putting one drop each in a cup of clean water or putting them in a vegetable capsule. I also would use only an organic brand of essential oil that you know how they source their oils. Let’s look at Eucalyptus. There are many different types such as E. smithii, E. globulus, E. radiata, and E. citriodora. The one I am referring to in this article is E. globulus. This is wonderful

19

for stuffy noses and best diffused but not if you’re pregnant or under the age of five as if you have a seizure disorder it can increase their likelihood. A fast way to open up your sinuses is adding a drop or two to a washcloth and drop in the bottom of the shower; so that while you’re showering it will work with the warm water. If you are dealing with itchy rashes, try Lavender with Coconut oil. Another one I truly love is a blend of Frankincense with Roman Chamomile in Coconut oil to decrease the inflammation of the rash. One very important step to take that doesn’t include essential oils would be to rinse your nose out with a nettie pot (1 cup of clean warm water with 1 tsp of pink sea salt) at least twice a day. Rinse off in the shower once you have been outside and wipe those fur babies off with a damp cloth to get rid of pollen.

Music Therapy

How Music Therapy can help Rachel Kirsch (pictured) looks at Music Therapy and how it can help with a wide range of mental and physical conditions

I

n the car. On a run. Sitting at your desk. Folding laundry. Working in the yard. How often and where do you find yourself listening to music? For most people, music is an important part of their life. It’s something that is involved in their everyday activities. It can positively or negatively impact a person’s mood, depending on the genre and song. Music can create exciting, happy memories, or it can create sorrowful ones. For some people, it can also be so much more. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. Music therapy can include creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music (AMTA, 2006). Music therapy can be beneficial is a number of ways. It is designed to help with emotional support, motor development, pain/anxiety management, family support, socialization, and others. Music therapy first began in the late 1700’s, and has only become more relevant. In 1950, the National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT) was founded. Following that, the American Association for Music Therapy (AAMT) was established in 1971.

Kameri Muir: “The Music Therapist should create an individual plan for you”.

Most recently, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) was formed in 1998 as a merger between the NAMT and the AAMT (AMTA, 2006). According to Kameri Muir, a music therapist in Nashville, “Music therapists are certified professionals who are trained to use music as a tool to creatively improve a person’s health under a variety of circumstances. Whatever the need is, a music therapist will create a specific plan for how to utilize music to reach a series of non-musical goals and objectives.” Carrie Friddell, local music therapist of In Harmony Music of Middle Tennessee, says that music therapists use music to assess the “whole’” person in areas of cognition, physical movement in gross and fine motor skills, sensory processing, and some musicality. However, music ability or talent is not a prerequisite. Music is universally enjoyed by all people in some form or fashion and I am trained to start with what types of music a client prefers. This helps with motivation. Music Therapy can stand alone as a therapy or it can enhance and work with other interdisciplinary teams with speech therapist, family therapists, doctors, nurses and caregivers to enhance a person’s holistic care.

Carrie Friddell: “people come alive to their favorite music and it is motivation for change and growth”.

Dana Kim: “There is a growing body of research demonstrating the cost effectiveness of music therapy in a variety of healthcare settings”

20

Ms. Friddell goes on to say that, “Once I was enrolled in a college program to earn my equivalency degree in Music Therapy, I never looked back. Practicing music therapy with children and adults has become a passion and drives me to be a better musician and therapist.” Her motto is “music promotes the person”. She says that people come alive to their favorite music and it is motivation for change and growth. Contrary to music therapy stereotypes, there is a thorough amount of schooling involved. Local music therapist, Dana Kim, who works at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, stated, “Board certified music therapists have extensive training including a four-year bachelor’s degree and often an additional master’s degree which includes courses in anatomy, psychology, music, counseling, and over 1200 hours of clinical training experience on how to utilize the medium of music to achieve specific, individualized health care goals.” “Beyond being an innovative, non-invasive treatment that often increases patient satisfaction, music therapy is also cost-effective,” stated Ms. Kim. “There is a growing body of research demonstrating the cost effectiveness of music therapy in a variety of healthcare settings. Specific to pediatric hospitals, music therapy has been shown to decrease the length of stay for premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit by up to five days, which may translate into thousands of dollars saved (Standley, 1998).” Ms. Friddell wants to inform the public that music therapy can enrich lives, bring a unique assist into educational settings, increase health and wellness, bring respite to a hospice setting, help support mental health and so much more. Mental Health

A Solution for Depression – From the Inside Out More than three million cases of depression are reported every year in the United States and an estimated 19 million American adults are suffering from major depression. Is there a way to come out of depression naturally? Sadhguru, yogi, mystic and the foremost authority on yoga, reminds us that as children, joy was our natural state. He provides insight into the sources of depression and dealing with it from the inside out. Sadhguru:

Once you declare that depression is a natural process, there is no way out. When you were a child, being joyful was natural to you, not being depressed. So do not declare that depression is natural. Depression means you are unable to maintain the exuberance of life in you. It happens even in your body. If you are depressed, even the physical body flops. Life within you is not exuberant – it has just gone down and lost its exuberance because you are not doing the right thing with it. You are imposing too much outside nonsense upon the inside. You have not done anything to keep your life energies high.

The Source of Depression Depression is a kind of agony. If you have become agony and not ecstasy, it is because a large part of your life energy is happening compulsively, not consciously. It is happening as a reaction to external situations. Once you are happening compulsively, becoming depressed is very normal, because external situations are never hundred percent in your control. There are so many things happening in the world; if you compulsively react, getting lost and becoming miserable is natural. The more exposed you are to life, the more miserable you will become. When people are unable to handle life outside, they try to curtail their life and withdraw. But even that goes out of control, doesn’t it? There is one part of you which is constantly seeking expansion – you want to constantly increase the boundaries and

areas of your activity. There is another part of you which is getting depressed every time something does not go the way you think it should go. Getting depressed is subject to the non-fulfillment of your expectations. If the stock market gets depressed today, so many people will get depressed. Many of them may never have even touched that money, but every day they were watching the graphs rising and their mood was in ascendancy. Now they see the graph falling, so their mood is falling. It is just that what they expected to happen, did not happen.

Fixing the Inside People can cause depression in their mood in so many ways. If you take away what they think is precious, they become depressed. The tragedy with a lot of people, especially in affluent societies, is that they have everything and yet they have nothing. Depression means somewhere, a certain hopelessness has set in. If you go to some very poor village in India, they are really impoverished, but you will see joyful faces because they have hope – it is going to be better tomorrow. In affluent societies that hope is gone. Depression has set in because everything that can be used externally has been fixed. There is food, there is housing, there is clothing, there is everything, but still there is something wrong. They just do not know what. A poor man may think, “Tomorrow, if I get a new pair of footwear, everything will be fine.” If he gets a new pair of footwear, he will walk like a king with great joy on his face because he has hope; the 21

outside is not yet fixed. In affluent societies, the outside is fixed, but the inside is not fixed, so there is hopelessness and depression. As we work on the outside, we must also fix the inside. Then the world would be beautiful. What we call as a spiritual process is just this – not just fixing the objective aspect of your life but taking care of the subjectivity of who you are. If that is not taken care of, you will have everything, and you will have nothing. Sadhguru will be personally offering Inner Engineering in Los Angeles, April 21st–22nd at the Long Beach Convention Center and in Philadelphia, May 5th–6th at Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. As Sadhguru rarely conducts this program, this is a unique opportunity to learn Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, a life-transforming practice from him. To learn more visit: www.InnerEngineering.com or contact us at LA@ishausa.org or Philly@ishausa.org.

Wellness Centers

What can a Wellness Center do for you? For many Wellness involves going to your doctor for a yearly physical, eating a balanced diet, and working out. Our bodies are a machine that requires maintenance and sometimes the bare minimum of taking care of yourself isn’t enough. Veronica Williams (pictured) looks at the way a Wellness Center could help. management solutions will find them at Wellness centers. The best way to start at a Wellness center is begin with some meditation classes and work in a body work or health treatment once a month depending on what you want to accomplish. If you have a more acute condition your Wellness center may suggest you seek weekly treatments. Wellness Centers can be very affordable at Ha’Le classes start at $16 and treatments start at $100/hr, they offer package discounts as well.

Looking for a Wellness Center When looking for a wellness center you should keep in mind the services you want. Many offer a consultation service prior to beginning services. Having a consultation with someone at a Wellness center beforehand is important so that you can choose the treatments that are best for you. Some Wellness centers offer classes in meditation and yoga. These and other forms of meditation and awareness are a great way to learn more about the wellness center.

Services at a Wellness Center

A

day spa may be a relaxing day for most but a Wellness center offers a relaxing experience while focusing on your health. As Nashville grows, Wellness centers are popping up. So what is a Wellness center and what do they offer? A Wellness center offers services that focus on medical Wellness typically through holistic practices. Wellness centers offer everything from meditation classes to acupuncture.

What is a Wellness Center? Carrie owner of Back in Touch Wellness describes a Wellness center where “historical traditions to address body / mind / spirit aspects of human healing and development meet.” Wellness centers

feature such services as Acupuncture, Massages, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, Aromatherapy, Hypnotherapy, Meditation, and many more. The focus on Holistic medicine and alternative therapies is very appealing to individuals who are looking for alternative therapies to traditional medicine. Wellness centers offer treatments and preventative care that can be a great addition to your wellness routine and allow you to live your life to the optimum.

Who are Wellness Centers for? At Ha’Le their demographic ranges from people in their 30’s to their 80’s. Wellness centers are for everyone! Often people who are looking for pain 22

Wellness centers offer a variety of services depending upon what center you go to. Services range from Chinese medicine to massages. A good Wellness center will offer a range of services from physical services to those that focus on spiritual and emotional aspects like meditation and counseling. You may also find other services such as hypnotherapy. Wellness centers can also be good for relaxation as many offer services you would often find at a spa such as massages and facials.

Spirituality and Wellness Centers Spirituality is an important part of wellness and something that separates Wellness centers from day spas and other health practices. Your emotional and spiritual well-being can directly affect your health

Wellness Centers

Motorcycle Accidents (What to do?) By David E. High, Attorney-At-Law

Accidents between motorcycles and cars or trucks can cause devastating personal injuries to the motorcycle rider.

treatment, including physical therapy, can speed the recovery process and minimize the permanent effects from the injury.

Notify Your Motorcycle Insurance Carrier Promptly You should promptly notify your motorcycle insurance carrier even if the accident was not your fault. You likely have benefits such as medical payment coverage and underinsured/ uninsured motorist coverage under your own motorcycle policy that needs to be utilized. Medical payment coverage pays your medical bills up to a set amount regardless of fault. If you also have major medical coverage you should require that all healthcare providers first bill your major medical coverage. Thereafter, you can use your medical payments coverage under your motorcycle policy to pay any deductibles, co-pays or uncovered medical expenses.

I

f you are njured in a motorcycle accident, it is imperative that you seek immediate medical treatment. It is best to be examined at the scene and to obtain emergency treatment as soon as possible. If you are unable to do so, have someone take photographs of the vehicles, debris, skid marks and other evidence at the scene, before the vehicles are moved. This is very important evidence. Obtain the contact information for any witnesses. If it is not possible to get photographs of the vehicles at the scene, photographs should be taken as soon as possible of the vehicles and the accident scene. Promptly have photographs taken of all of your visible injuries.

Personal Injury Motorcycle Accidents In an injury accident, a qualified individual should obtain crash and crush data from the

vehicles and examine the scene for evidence, including skid marks, gouge marks and debris for future accident reconstruction. It is important to promptly employ a qualified personal injury attorney so that this evidence can be preserved and witnesses can be interviewed while the accident is fresh in their minds. Also, experts are available that can download Electronic Control Module (ECM) information which can provide data, including vehicle speed, braking, throttle, crash impact and other important data. If you wait too long, this data will be lost. After you obtain your emergency medical treatment, it is important that you be seen by a qualified specialist. Treatment should be coordinated through a qualified medical doctor, generally an orthopaedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. Be compliant with all treatment recommendations. Prompt 24

Hire An Experienced Personal Injury Attorney In accidents involving personal injuries, you should promptly hire an attorney experienced in motorcycle accidents. You should act promptly so that your attorney can examine, photograph and preserve the evidence and interview all witnesses. Do not give any statements to the other side’s insurance company or representative. Only discuss the case with your attorney. Employ an experienced attorney with a proven track record of obtaining significant settlements and verdicts in motorcycle accidents. At High Law Office, PLLC, representation can be obtained on a contingent fee basis so that you pay only if you win your claim. Contact High Law Office, PLLC Telephone: (615)256-1000 www. 10 Best foods for your Brain Health Lindsey Joe (pictured) RDN, LDN is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at The Meal Planning Method. Here she offers advice on the best food regimen for a fit and healthy…Brain.

T

have shown that long-term consumption of adequate DHA is linked to improved memory and learning ability and slowed progression of cognitive decline.

hey say that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. So don’t! As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I help individuals overcome their most frustrating food problems. And while you may not have healthy food on the brain all the time, there are foods that you can incorporate each day to ensure you’re giving your brain the best! Check out these 10 foods for better brain health:

8. Seaweed. The ocean provides more than just delicious fish that benefits our brains. Algae is actually a primary source of DHA so don’t be shy about ordering seaweed salad next time you’re out for sushi or adding spirulina to your smoothie.

1. Carbohydrates. This one’s easy… think of

9. Turmeric. This golden yellow spice not only

carbohydrate-containing foods – such as fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains – like highoctane fuel. They energize the brain and body and keep everything running smoothly. Aim to include carbohydrates at every meal and snack you enjoy.

2. Veggies. You likely knew that eating more vegetables is good for you, but did you know that they may help improve your memory too? It’s true – especially cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and dark leafy greens.

3. Foods Fortified with Vitamin D. While better known for its role in bone health, Vitamin D also allows the brain and body to communicate properly through your nerves. Fortified foods (meaning foods that have extra vitamins or minerals added to it) typically provide most of the vitamin D in our diets and include most milks, cereals, as well as some orange juices, yogurts, cheeses and soy beverages. Be sure to check the food label for exact Vitamin D content. 4. Berries and Cherries. These deeply colored fruits are a rich in anthocyanins that may boost your memory function and guard against dementia. Try fresh, frozen or dried blackberries, blueberries and cherries in your day.

has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, but turmeric also helps boost your “happy hormone” (aka serotonin). Use it to brighten any meal, snack, or even beverage with just a pinch!

5. Walnuts. They not only look a little bit like a brain, but walnuts contain heart-healthy fats and may improve your cognitive function. Walnuts are easier to enjoy than you think -- add them to oatmeal or a salad or have a handful of walnuts as a satisfying snack.

6. Chia Seeds. These tiny black seeds contain heart-healthy fat in the form of essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These essential fats are needed to form eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are both critical to keeping the brain functioning normally and efficiently.

7. Fish. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming at least 8 ounces of fish per week. This is because oily fish in particular, such as wild salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring and farmed trout, are great catches that contain that critical DHA. And studies 25

10. Lactobacillus casei. This probiotic, aka “good” gut bacteria, may play an important role in your gut-brain system by improving mental and neurological health according to recent studies. You can find L. casei in certain dairy and non-dairy yogurts and kefirs. Be sure to look for “contains live active cultures” or “contains probiotics” on the food label. While no food or food group can 100% guarantee a beautiful mind until old age, taking preventative steps every day to eat better for your brain just might help preserve your valuable asset. Vegetarian or Vegan?

When going Vegetarian or Vegan do your research Veronica Williams (pictured) looks, with the help of two local Nutritionists, at what you should consider before going Vegetarian or even more extreme, Vegan.

V

egan and vegetarian diets are increasing in popularity over the past few years. A vegan diet involves cutting out all animal products (from your diet and even from your lifestyle) and vegetarian diet involves cutting out all meat. Blogs, restaurants, and even stores dedicated to these diets are popping up everywhere. But you have to ask yourself what is the best way to do it? Of course the practice of not eating or using animal products dates back thousands of years as a way of healthy eating and spiritual cleansing. With endless resources a vegetarian and vegan diet is easier than ever, however, people are still falling short. Find out some tips from the experts how to be a healthy vegetarian or vegan.

Why should I cut out meat? Meat is in almost every meal you eat now, which exceeds your weekly requirement. Lindsey Joe, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, points out that it’s recommended to intake no more than 18 ounces of red meat a week. Joe, adds that “cutting out read meat is encouraged when it comes to Cancer prevention because research has shown that these foods may promote cancer-causing compounds.” Meat consumption has been on the rise which means we need more space and resources to take care of these animals and raise them for consumption. Cutting out meat is a choice for a healthy lifestyle that can help create healthy habits and have a positive environmental impact.

Protein Replacements Consuming more meat and protein than we need which can lead to heart and gastrointestinal health issues. For anyone beginning a diet free of meat you do need to consider how you will get protein. Nan Allison RDN suggests many alternative ways to get protein including “nuts, seeds, soy, beans lentils, and soy milk.” When switching to a vegetarian diet is important that you are making you consume enough, Nan pointed out “that many people don’t eat enough because they feel like it is too much.”

Outside of these foods there are many other foods that contain protein, Lindsey Joe RDN provides us with this list of protein-rich foods: • 1 cup of cooked spinach has about 5 grams of protein • 1 cup of cooked broccoli is about 4 grams • ½ cup of cooked quinoa contributes about 4 grams of protein • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter offer 8 grams.

B12, Iron, and Calcium

Like protein B12, Iron, and Calcium are all nutrients that we typically get from animal products, but you can find many alternatives. B12 can also be found in soy products, meat alternatives, and cereals. Beans, lentils, tofu, and tempeh are all great sources of iron as well as protein for those looking for meat alternatives. Dark green vegetables such as kale, spinach, and broccoli are also a great source of calcium.

Have sufficient of these

Vegan and vegetarian diets when done properly can contain all your nutrients and help you live out a healthy lifestyle. For many people it can be time consuming to prep and consume so many whole foods. These are vitamins you should make sure you are getting from either supplements or whole foods when you go meat-free: Vitamin B12: Try nutritional yeast and nut milks to get more of this. Iron: Leafy green vegetables, lentils, and peas are high in iron. Zinc: Whole grains, legumes, and beans all contain zinc. Vitamin D: Mushrooms are rich in vitamin D and a great meat replacement in meals. Omega-3: Chia seeds and flax seeds are a great omega-3 replacement. Iodine: Kelp, Arame, Hiziki, Kombu, and Wakame. Cranberries. Milk, Organic Yogurt, Cheese and other Dairy products 26

Common Misconceptions An important part of any diet is keeping it healthy and balanced. It is often thought that a vegetarian diet will make it difficult to get the nutrients you need. However, as with any diet it is all about eating foods that meet your needs. Nan Allison warns people who are becoming vegetarian that you should avoid eating a “brown diet”, meaning your diet lacks color. Eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds that have color. The more natural color on your plate the better. “Be a rockstar label reader. Eating a vegetarian or vegan diet doesn’t mean you want to forget about choosing foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and added sugar”, says Lindsey Joe. Eating a balanced diet is the first step to good health. “Detoxifying while nourishing,” is how Nan Allison describes a balanced vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet can be a great way to kick start a healthy lifestyle rich with fresh vegetables and diverse food with everything from beans and soy products to tofu and lentils. Eating a diverse vegetarian diet is a safe way to better your health. Interested in learning more from the experts? Vegetarian or Vegan?

Pros and cons of transitioning to Vegan lifestyle quickly BY CHRISTOPHER JACOBY Changing your whole lifestyle and diet from the common methods of living to vegan ways can be tough without an adequate planning. A full transition takes time. As a matter of fact, you may find ultimately that it’s harder to live an entirely vegan lifestyle with appropriate furniture, clothing, and products than just concentrating on eating a plant-based diet. Just remember that keeping a creative mindset and staying positive are essential character traits when you are trying to endure any challenges or setbacks.

Pros • You may see the health benefits very soon. For someone who suffers health problems that are worsened by meat, has plenty of weight to lose, or is allergic or sensitive to dairy, vegan diet can yield near instant positive feelings. You may have asthma, allergies or a runny nose for years, and then all at once your phlegm melts away because you stopped

eating cheese and drinking milk just a couple of days ago – it’s a extraordinary feeling, and you will want it to continue. • You may feel relieved that you are no longer contributing to cruel treatment on animals. If the moral issues are the driving factor behind your transition to vegan lifestyle, you’ll quickly feel a lot better about getting food that does not contribute to the suffering and pain of an animal.

Cons Adopting a vegan lifestyle too quickly can be confusing with its new rules and complexities. Remember some of these drawbacks when you want to do this faster: • Your health condition may initially be influenced and can cause you feel weak or get a little unwell during a busy day. Detoxing from dairy foods and meat is a possible benefit when you choose plant-

based diet. When our bodies no longer get constant inflow of unhealthy proteins and fats, they will finally have an opportunity to cleanse themselves. This cleansing process can feel uncomfortable and cause some symptoms like tiredness, acne, headaches, or perhaps the urge to smash your neighbor’s windows. • You may need to spend a large amount of money trying to replace all animal-derived products in your home. Throwing away or donating everything that was made from an animal can leave your house bare and cupboards empty. Replacing a huge leather couch costs money as will restocking your fridge with plant-based food. Think about the amount of money you need to spend to be completely vegan. • You may make huge mistakes if you fail to do proper researches beforehand. You are probably going to mess everything up in the first month of being vegan. Still, making mistakes isn’t a valid reason to throw in the towel – if your trip comes crashing down, do you go to the nearest fast food chain? No. You get up, get yourself organized and try again. Keep it up, and you will figure it out. Courtesy http://www.healthguidance.org/

Multiple Missing Teeth:

What’s the Best Solution? If you are missing multiple teeth, especially molars, you may be wondering about your dental options. You want the freedom to be able to eat whatever you want. You want a stable, secure fix that won’t require unnecessary upkeep.

W

ith this issue, your possible solutions for multiple missing back teeth include a fixed bridge anchored to implants or a partial removable denture. Removable dentures can be uncomfortable and complicated and their materials and fabrication can get expensive. A fixed bridge is often the superior choice for a lasting and comfortable solution that feels just like your natural teeth.

Benefits of a Fixed Bridge Anchored to Implants: • They are the sole fixed solution for missing back teeth. • They are stable and secure, so you can eat anything without fear. • They preserve your natural facial appearance. • They prevent bone deterioration. • They are more comfortable than dentures. • They keep your gum line intact, eliminating metal clasps that can eat away your gum line. • They preserve your adjacent teeth. • They mimic natural teeth exactly in look and feel. • They are a permanent fix. You won’t have to deal with any upkeep other than regular hygiene.

Once you’ve decided that a fixed bridge is the fix for you, what can you expect from the procedure? After your initial visit with your oral surgeon, you’ll have four to five additional visits until the final fixed bridge is attached. You may experience minor bruising, but you can treat it with over-the-counter painkillers, and you can be back to work the day after your procedure.

The Installation Process: 1. The implants are installed first, usually in a single session. You may receive a temporary bridge so you’ll have normal mouth function as soon as you leave. 2. The implants must integrate with the jawbone before you get the permanent bridge. This varies, but it is normally done one to two months after implant installation. 3. Then, the new bridge will be installed, which will handle all the pressure of natural back teeth.

Permanently Restore Your Teeth If you are ready to begin the process of permanently restoring your teeth and being able to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, you should contact a trusted oral surgeon, like those at Solace Oral Surgery. A professional will help guide you through the process step-by-step so that it is as painless and straightforward as possible, customized just for you. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392 or visit us at www.SolaceOralSurgery.com. 28

I had contacted several other doctors before being referred to Dr. Romero and they weren’t able to get me an appointment for quite a while. I had a bone graft in preparation for an implant and everything was seamless. During my consultation, he took the time to answer all of my questions and provide options for my treatment. Because I have a sales career, I could not afford to be toothless for long. He moved the process along quickly. I had no swelling, very little pain and was able to return to work 2 days after the surgery with no pain or painkillers. I highly recommend Solace Oral Surgery.” #OralSurgery #Happypatient #DrRomero #Solaceoralsurger #Dental #Dentalimplants #Implants

The BIGGEST News in Laser Vision Surgery

“SMILE” Vision Surgery Debuted Statewide in Nashville New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts

The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Cafe, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville,” among others. Brain Health

The big 5 for a Healthy Brain Chris Taleghani, of Pinnacle Surgery (pictured) writes about the importance of spine health, and the things you can do to improve back health in 2018. This month, he talks about how to keep your brain healthy with the five “S” tips. Sleep While you sleep, your brain is busy working, repairing itself and boosting your immune system. During REM sleep, your brain consolidates information learned during the day. Poor sleep, or less sleep, can lead to fatigue, mood disorders, memory concerns, and immune suppression.

Stress There is increasing evidence that stress actually damages the brain. The steps you take to reduce stress will likely help preserve nerve cells and help maintain mental abilities. Regular exercise is a proven way to reduce stress because your internal stress can be focused on external action. Not to mention, the other exercise benefits, like lower risk for cardiovascular disease and depression. Even taking a walk will help you think more clearly. Even 12-minute bouts of exercise release serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, which can produce a state of euphoria.

Stimulation Most people don’t know that human mental decline begins before age forty. Just like your body, your brain needs exercise. The unused parts of the brain will actually stop working, if not properly exercised. Exercising your brain isn’t as hard as it sounds. Try to mentally stimulate yourself every day by doing things like reading, playing bridge or chess, or doing a puzzle. Challenging the brain allows new pathways to form when neurons dieoff in middle and old age.

Safety The main causes of adult head trauma are motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, and sports injuries. Make safety your first priority. Just taking common

sense safety precautions, such as wearing a safety helmet during sports and a seatbelt, can make a huge difference in brain health. Head trauma is definitely a silent epidemic.

Source Glucose is the essential energy source for the brain. It is the fuel that keeps cells alive and functioning. That’s why we’ve always heard, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” It gives your brain and your body fuel for the long day ahead. Your brain also needs a well-balanced, low cholesterol, low saturated fat diet. Fish is called “brain food” for a reason—it’s full of omega-3s. According to research, antioxidant vitamins E and C are a source for protecting your brain. 31
