Tasty events this Summer in Nashville
This month’s Healthy recipe by Laura Lea
Diy superfood instant oatmeal By Laura Lea Goldberg
There are two different ways to enjoy this Superfood Oatmeal: 1. HOT: Almost every hotel or Airbnb offers access to hot water, whether through a Keurig or other coffee maker, a stove and pot, a microwave or even just really hot tap water. Simply pour your Superfood oats in a heat-proof mug, bowl or other cup (I’ve even used high-ball glasses!). If using a stove top, cover with water (about 1/2 inch above oat line) and cook, stirring, on low until absorbed. If using a microwave, cover with water (about 1 inch above oat line) and microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until absorbed. I suggest using a larger bowl or cup with the microwave so it doesn’t bubble over. If using water from a Keurig or coffee maker or tap, just pour hot water over oats just barely above the oat line and allow to sit 5 minutes, covered with a napkin or towel. Then stir and add splashes of water as desired. 2. COLD: My favorite way to enjoy these when I have access to a fridge is to turn it into overnight oats. You can keep it simple and just pour the oats into a mug/bowl etc. and stir in enough water that the mixture is the consistency of a thick smoothie; not watery but thinner than oatmeal consistency. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour overnight and enjoy! If you have more time and access however; you can pick up a small container of nut milk and use that instead of water. For either method, you can certainly add fresh fruit and other toppings. My favorite combinations are almond butter with fresh raspberries and peanut butter with sliced banana.

Carrie Underwood reveals her keep fit secret Carrie Underwood tells SELF. com how she makes fitness a priority—and finds a deck of cards a useful tool in keeping healthy. To keep her workouts interesting, Underwood turns to a deck of cards. “I’ll assign a move to each suit, then flip over a card and do the number of [reps that corresponds with the number]. So if it’s an eight, I’ll have to do eight push-ups,” she says. For a total-body workout, she’ll make sure to include an upper-body move, lower-body move, abs work, and cardio. “I’ll do things like push-ups, pull-ups, and

sometimes I’ll assign a suit to running on the treadmill and I’ll run a quarter mile.” The card game serves two purposes for Underwood: It keeps things fresh and saves her the energy of having to plot out an exact workout. “You don’t have to think too much,” she explains. When she doesn’t have cards on hand, she’ll improvise a similar system using dice—assigning one move to each number on the die, and then doing 15 reps of whichever move she rolls. How to Break Down Communication Walls & Build Bridges in Your Marriage Are you and your spouse struggling to find common ground? In light of your professional success, you may find it difficult to accept the challenges in your marriage. Many executives believe it is easier to separate their home life from their work life — often at the expense of their personal relationships.
The first step in improving your communication is: Awareness.
New Nashville Health show launches in September The all new ‘Natural Living Show’ will be at the Fairgrounds in Nashville on September 29th. Organized by Amanda Perry she told H&W the NLS will be an “an immersive event, where people learn something new, connect with people and services in the Tennessee area, and go home with cool stuff and full bellies. We are designing interactive experiences where you can learn more about Tennessee while having fun”. Early workshop speakers include: Tanya Kell, Certified Classical Homeopath – Demystifying Homeopathy Evan Pridemore DC – Innate Intelligence:
The next steps lie in the way you and your spouse handle the tension in your relationship. Your response will dictate whether your marriage becomes constructive or destructive.

As an executive marriage advisor, I’ve spent decades working with high-power couples who believe their marriage is deteriorating. I have found that far too often, blame, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling lead to divorce.
Nashville targets Opioid abuse Mayor David Briley signed an Executive Order in early May establishing a Community Behavioral Health and Wellness Advisory Council — a group of community experts who will advise the Mayor in setting priorities around issues of behavioral health, mental illness and substance abuse. “The number of families impacted by a mental or behavioral health condition or experiencing substance abuse is staggering, while stigma and a fragmented system of care make it very hard to achieve wellness. The work of this collaborative Council is critical. It will raise awareness to reduce stigma,
and it will improve navigation and access to care to reduce suffering,” said Mayor Briley. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 American adults live with a mental health condition and less than half receive treatment. Severe depression among youth has also significantly increased in recent years and, fueled by the opioid epidemic, substance abuse is rising dramatically. In fact, overdose deaths now exceed deaths from homicide and motor vehicle accidents combined, and overdose has become the leading cause of death for Americans under age 50.
You can decide to speak honestly with your spouse. You can decide to stop keeping your work private, and start sharing your thoughts and fears with your partner. You candecide to bare your soul to your spouse, and treat them like your best friend. You can decide to stop focusing on the superficial components of your relationship.
You can absolutely strengthen your marriage with the right mindset. The following communication tips promote positive interactions:
That said, you must take responsibility for your actions in order to make progress. To improve your communication, focus on making a joint effort to change your habits and mindset.
• Instead of feeling contempt, think about why you respect and appreciate them. • Instead of stonewalling your spouse, embrace their vulnerability. Give them the opportunity to understand what you are thinking by extending them the same courtesy. 9
The choice is yours.
If these patterns have become the norm for you, know that you can change your situation. I have seen countless couples turn their marriage around by breaking down the communication walls and building bridges in their relationship.
• Instead of blaming your spouse, accept what they are saying without jumping to conclusions.
Joke: A psychiatrist asks a lot of expensive questions your wife asks for nothing.
When you uncover the power of your actions, you and your spouse can choose to change your behaviors and improve your marriage.
You can decide to talk TO your spouse rather than THROUGH them.

Go Local when shopping for produce By Karina Hammer, Certified Holistic Wellness Coach www.karinahammer.com
A perfect way to celebrate each season is to indulge in the unsurpassed flavor of local foods. A great way to enjoy fresh, seasonal foods is to frequent your local farmer’s market. Usually these occur on weekend mornings, but can also be found throughout the week. Also, look for roadside farm stands. You will be amazed at how much money you save on produce from local farmers, as compared to produce from a traditional grocery store. Another huge difference you will notice between regular grocery store produce and local produce is the flavor. Local produce is fresher, because it doesn’t have to travel for thousands of miles before reaching your table. That also means it packs more nutrients. The only drawback to this is that your family will become produce snobs! Once you taste a local peach dripping with succulence, don’t expect to be able to tolerate bland, mealy, mushy grocery store peaches ever again. Local produce, if it comes from a small farm, is less likely to be genetically modified. The term “genetically modified food” means that the DNA of a crop has been altered to enhance a desired trait. The main reason for this is to make it possible to grow a higher yield of crops that are resistant to pests. Genetically engineered crops are a concern because they have the capability of destroying all non-GMO crops, specifically small, organically farmed crops, including diverse varieties of particular crops.

Pt 2 in the July issue. Acupressure What it is: Acupressure is an ancient form of therapy which involves applying pressure to certain points around the body in order to stimulate the body’s own healing processes, and bring about positive health benefits. Colon Cleansing
What it is: What’s the purpose of cleansing your colon? To flush out built-up waste stored by rehydrating old stool that’s become impacted. Most colon cleanses use water to infiltrate hardened stool and loosen it up so it can be passed more easily. The ultimate goal of a colon cleanse — whether it’s a type of enema or a colonic — is really to help the digestive organs do their job in the best way possible, managing things that get in the way and interfere with normal bowel functions. Colon cleanses aren’t necessarily needed by every person, but some people can really benefit from eliminating waste, bacterial matter and toxic material that’s stored in their bodies. Benefits: A colon cleanse can help bring about regular bowel movements. Studies show that bowel movements are important
for removing bacteria, heavy metal detox or eliminating excess fatty acids from the body. A colon cleanse can also impact the nervous system positively, which is why it might help symptoms like anxiety and fatigue. More information: https://draxe.com/colon-cleanse/

Biofield Tuning for Anxiety, Stress, Depression & Pain Here Robin Barnes of Sound Health Alliance discusses Biofield Tuning. It’s a unique non-medical therapeutic method using sound waves produced by tuning forks in the biomagnetic field, or biofield, that surround the human body, to induce targeted relaxation. It’s a simple, non-invasive and efficient method that can produce profound & powerful outcomes in the reduction of Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Pain.
How Does it Work? Biofield Tuning is a process that uses tuning forks both diagnostically & therapeutically to locate & correct distortions in the body’s energy field or biofield. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 85% of all diseases are caused by emotional stress. The biofield acts like the rings of a tree and stores trauma & emotional distress in the timeline that it occurred. Tuning forks are passed over the body, starting at the edge of the Biofield (on average, 5-6 feet to either side of the body) and moved slowly inwards towards the center line of the body. Places that store trauma or emotional distress are generally charged & stuck. The sound produced by the forks will initially resonate with this dissonance and then overtake it, providing the body & mind the opportunity to return to an energetically balanced center.
Who May Benefit?
The following conditions may be improved through Biofield Tuning: Pain, anxiety, adrenal stress, digestive issues, menstrual issues, depression, fibromyalgia, addiction, fear/phobias, panic attacks, vertigo, PTSD, migraines/ headaches, restless leg syndrome, “stuckness”, and more. Robin Barnes is the owner of Sound Health Alliance in Franklin. She is a Reiki Master, intuitive Sound Healer & Certified Practitioner of both Biofield Tuning and BioAcoustics. Alternative Therapies: A-Z guide
CST is a non-invasive, hands-on therapy that aims to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities. According to the Upledger Institute, CST uses a touch of under five grams to “release restrictions in the Craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.” This light touch is said to affect the pressure and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which is the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. This process is thought to relieve pain and dysfunction. Practitioners claim that CST can be carried out as a standalone treatment or used in conjunction with medical or other alternative therapies. Benefits: Can help with: • headache and migraine • chronic pain conditions • chronic fatigue syndrome • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • and anxiety and depression in adults, as well as hyperactivity in children. Crystal healing
What it is: Crystal healing, also sometimes referred to as gemstone treatment or crystal therapy, involves the use of special crystals to treat different health concerns. It is based on the principle that certain natural gemstones and crystals each have their own effects on the energy fields of the body. Crystals are either worn as jewelry, carried by the person in their pockets or bags, or placed strategically around the home or workplace where their healing energies can have the greatest benefit. Benefits: • Depending on the type used, crystals can treat a range of emotional concerns • Promotes a calm and centered mind
• Crystals do not lose their energy over time • Easy to use by anyone More information: www.stylecaster.com/beauty/crystal-healing-guide
Cupping therapy What it is: Cupping therapy is a form on Ancient Chinese Medicine, which involves the placement of heated glass suction cups onto the skin in order to form a vacuum and draw blood to the surface of the skin in these areas. It is performed by a licensed practitioner, who will determine the specific points on the body where the cupping is needed, and how many cups to use. Cups are usually left on the skin for between five and fifteen minutes. Benefits: • Helps sore, overworked muscles recover faster • Promotes circulation • Deeply relaxing • Releases toxins from the body More information: www.naturaltherapypages.com. au/natural_medicine/Cupping
Ear candling
What it is: Ear candling is a type of therapy which involves inserting one end of a special type of candle into the ear, and lighting the other end with a small flame. One usually lays on their side while the treatment is taking place. It can be performed at home, with the assistance of someone to light the candle for you, or in a practitioner’s office. Benefits: • Helps soften and extract built up ear wax from the ear canal • Helps relieve sinus pressure • Can help treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears) • Deeply relaxing More information: https://www.sacredsoulholistics.co.uk/blog/ complete-introductory-guide-ear-candling/
EAV Electrodermal Screening
What it is: EAV or Computron, is a painless, noninvasive assessment tool that can support other diagnostic tools when assessing health issues. It uses state-of-the-art computer technology to measure the body’s energy system through acupuncture points on the skin. Electrodermal screening is a valuable tool in the identification and treatment of disturbances in the body such as allergies, food sensitivities, or problem areas in the teeth, gums and jaw, hormonal deficiencies, vitamin or enzyme deficiencies, or infections. 16
Benefits: • Painless • Quick • No side effects • Safe • Suitable for all ages More information: http://www.healthy.net
Electromagnetic therapy What it is: Electromagnetic therapy is a type of treatment which revolves around the premise that all functions in the body are controlled by electromagnetic waves, and that a disturbance in the frequency of these electromagnetic waves is what causes disease. The therapy itself involves the use of electromagnets by a practitioner to rebalance the currents in the body, and help treat a range of disorders. Benefits: • Non invasive • Aids relaxation • Rebalances imbalances in the body’s energy field More information: www.hopkinsmedicine.org
Enemas What it is: Enema therapy is a type of therapy which involves using water or other fluids to flush and cleanse out the colon and lower bowels. There are different types of enema, with coffee enemas being one of the most popular in recent times. The aim of enemas is to cleanse the bowels of un eliminated waste that has built up in the digestive system over a number of years, and leave you feeling lighter and less sluggish straight away. Benefits: • Aids digestion • Reduces bloating and stomach discomfort • Detoxifies the body • Increases energy levels • Can be performed yourself at home with the right equipment More information: bodyecology.com

Feldenkrais method
• Promotes relaxation • Reduces headaches • Improves circulation • For more restful sleep More information: https://draxe.com/sensory-deprivation-tank/
Halotherapy
What it is: The Feldenkrais Method is an educational technique developed by Israeli physicist Moshe Feldenkrais, and involves increasing your self-awareness through specific bodily movements and exercises. Through slow repetition of movements, you “unlearn” inefficient habitual movement patterns which are causing strain to certain areas of your body. It is similar to the Alexander Technique, in the sense that it is a learned method, rather than a therapy which involves manipulation of the muscles or bones (such as with physiotherapy or chiropractic). Benefits: • Unlearn bad habits of movements (such as bad posture) • Alleviates pain associated with stiff muscles and joints • Improves posture and balance More information: feldenkrais-method.org
Floating What it is: ‘Floating’ involves floating in a pod or room that is designed for short term sensory deprivation. This is typically done within a large tank of super-saturated magnesium water that makes you completely buoyant. Float tanks are also called Isolation tanks or Sensory Deprivation Tanks. The basic concept is that floating reduces external stimuli as much as possible to help the body achieve a natural restorative state. Some people compare the experience of floating to meditation or yoga. Benefits: • Stress reduction • Anxiety relief • Pain relief
What is it: Dry salt is placed into a halogenerator that then precisely grinds the salt into specific microsized particles and then disperses the salt aerosol into the air in a closed environment such as a room or chamber. As the salt travels in the salt room, these salt particles of dry sodium chloride are inhaled into the respiratory system. The dry salt naturally starts absorbing allergens, toxins and foreign substances into your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract. The micro-sized crystal structure of pure NaCl particles breaks loose and clears out all of the ‘bad stuff’. This is the basis for how dry salt therapy can impact people suffering from respiratory conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, COPD and others. Benefits: People suffering with these conditions may benefit form Halotherapy: • Psoriasis • Dry & Flaky Skin • Acne • Rashes • Rosacea • Asthma • Allergies • Bronchitis • COPD • Cystic fibrosis 17
• Sinusitis • Ear infections • Smokers cough More information: www.salttherapyassociation.org
Herbology What is it: Herbology is the use of herbs, botanicals,
vitamins, minerals, probiotics, flowers, flower essences leaves, stems, roots, bark, fruits and seeds to induce healing in the body. Herbology is used by many different complementary and alternative medicine practitioners, including Naturopaths, Ayurveda Practitioners and in traditional Chinese Medicine. Although Herbology is all natural and generally considered to be safe, some herbs are very powerful and can interact with traditional medications. Individuals can also experience allergic reactions. Benefits: • Reduced risk of side effects: Most herbal medicines are well tolerated by the patient, with fewer unintended consequences than pharmaceutical drugs. • Effective with chronic conditions: Herbal medicines tend to be more effective for longstanding health complaints that don’t respond well to traditional medicine. • Lower cost: Herbs cost much less than prescription medications. • Widespread availability: Herbs are available without a prescription. Yoga
YOGA: Relaxing your way to a healthy life Nashville may be known as Music City, but there is more here in the city than the melodious sounds we are accustomed to. It also includes the sounds of relaxing and breathing that only yoga can bring. Rachel Kirsch (pictured) talks to some Nashville Yoga Center owners.
“N
amaste. Technically it means “I bow to you” and is sometimes translated as “The light in me sees the light in you.” When students leave the studio I hope they have seen a glimpse of their own amazing light, are a little more willing to notice the light in others and go out in the world willing to shine bright.” So says Linda Fenelon owner of NuPower Yoga, based here in Nashville. She says for her, yoga has been a place of both healing and connection. “My mat is a place to connect with my breath. From there anything is possible.” For Shakti Power Yoga, they are located right on Music Row, the heart of Nashville, in a large white house that is 110 years old. One of the owners, Lauren Farina, says their studio and community strives to be a place where people feel welcome, seen, and heard no matter what day you are having, they are always happy you are there. They also provide different styles of yoga at Shakti. Their main focus is Heated Power Yoga based on the Baptiste Methodology but they also have an unheated studio where they provide restorative classes, vinyasa classes and ashtanga. Their intention is to create a place where all are welcome and practice what they love. Just as each yoga studio is unique, so are the stories behind the creation of them. Leanne Woehlke, owner of EPIC Yoga tells her story about how she founded hers. “Years ago I had a high stress corporate job. I noticed on the days I practiced yoga in the morning I didn’t feel nauseous on my way to work. Shortly thereafter I quit my “good” corporate job and went to India. I came back and almost purchased an existing yoga studio, but I didn’t want to give up my lifestyle at the time, which was living in Philadelphia. Buying the studio would have meant moving out of the city, getting a roommate and selling my car. I decided I could make a bigger impact returning to the corporate world, but this time bringing my yoga with me. I taught classes after work and had a more mindful approach to work. I had several people come into my office and tell me the benefits that they were experiencing from the practice and
I realized the potential for yoga making a huge impact on the lives and well-being of individuals. Ten years later my dream of a yoga studio became a reality.” The benefits of yoga almost seem to be endless and can affect people of many ages. Some of these benefits include: • Reduces stress and tension • Improves focus, concentration and memory • Improves flexibility, strength, range of motion, and posture • Improves depression • Increases circulation and bone strength • Decreases risk of heart attacks and strokes • Decreases blood pressure • Weight loss • Lowers blood cholesterol At EPIC Yoga, a person has the ability to reap the benefits listed above, but the yoga studio also has other unique qualities. They are a Baptiste Affiliate Studio, the only one in Tennessee. Baptiste Yoga uses the tools of meditation, asana and inquiry. They use meditation as an access to getting present and awakening. It’s about letting go of the day to day noise and background chatter of the mind and becoming still. Steadfast and True Yoga is another Nashville yoga studio. They offer over 40 classes a week at a variety of styles, levels, and times. All of their teaching is based on sound movement and breath work with a specific focus on alignment to keep you safe and practicing for years to come. They strive to be friendly and easygoing, but will also challenge you when you need it. Nashville may be considered the hub for music, but don’t count out the Nashville yoga studios that have the ability to help a person relax, focus and improve their overall lifestyle. Namaste, as they say.
Lauren Farina, of Shakti says their studio “strives to be a place where people feel welcome, seen, and heard no matter what day you are having, they are always happy you are there”.

Allergies
Allergies, Allergies everywhere, can you avoid or treat them? It’s that time of year again, for those of you suffering from Environmental Allergies, Spring can be bad news. And for those of you with Food Allergies, well you have to live with them all the time. But why do so many more people seem to suffer from both than did in years gone by?
T
alk to your grandparents about Allergies and they’ll more than likely say “we didn’t have any in our day”. Which is probably true to a great degree. So why do so many people nowadays seem to suffer from Allergies whether Food or Environmental related? The number of people worldwide with Allergies is increasing, and the steepest increase in Allergies—particularly food Allergies—has been observed in children. Researchers estimate that some 15 million Americans and 17 million Europeans have food Allergies, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011. A 2010 study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that the number of children with peanut allergies more than tripled between 1997 and 2008. Jennifer Levine the Managing Editor of Developmental Cell, Cancer Cell, and iScience in a recent article on www.crosstalk.cell.com explains the possible causes of Food Allergies. “In general, when we think of what causes allergies, we’re thinking of allergens like pollen or pet dander. But these things aren’t causing allergies— they’re just triggering an allergic reaction. So what is the actual cause? Well… scientists aren’t 100% sure. But they do know that genetics has a lot to do with it. If your parents have allergies of any kind, odds are you will too. If you or a member of your immediate family has asthma, this also increases your risk of developing allergies. There’s also some biological predisposition at work. It seems eminently unfair, but if you already have an allergy, you’re more likely to develop an allergy to something else. It makes sense if you think about it: your immune system has already overreacted to one allergen and is already unnecessarily producing immunoglobulin E, so why not direct that IgE to more allergens, just to be safe? This explains why it seems to be all or nothing for a
20
lot of people with allergies; either you meet someone with no allergies, or you meet someone who seems to be allergic to everything. Two 2016 studies in Science Translational Medicine have suggested that signs of food allergies may be present already at birth. And it’s widely known that children with eczema—who frequently have an inherited allergic tendency—are at higher risk of developing food allergies. And yet, genetics aren’t entirely to blame: a 2013 study in JAMA Pediatrics found that foreign-born children who live in the US have a lower risk of developing allergies—and, even more interesting, that this risk grows the longer they remain here”. In answer to a question on www.allergic.com about why are there so many Allergies today Dr. Scott Sicherer a practicing allergist, clinical researcher and professor of pediatrics, and Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Jaffe Food Allergy Institute, offered this explanation: 20
“The shortest answer is we do not know exactly. There are theories based on our rapid change in lifestyle over the past decades. The theory with the most traction is about our relationship to germs, the hygiene hypothesis. We live clean. We protect ourselves from germs with medications. We wash frequently, have smaller families, and live away from farms and animals. Perhaps our immune system is looking for a fight and, without a steady challenge of harmful germs, it ends up misdirected, attacking innocent proteins in our food. This is not an advertisement to allow ourselves to get dangerous infections, but it may be an explanation to why, as a society, we see more allergy – an immune attack on innocent proteins from the outside – and more autoimmune disease – an attack on innocent proteins on the inside. It also presents a research opportunity to learn about the good bacteria that inhabit our bodies and how to manipulate them to our benefit. Think about other changes in lifestyle with computers and cell phones and our fast-paced, unhealthy diet. We are eating bad fats, not getting as much exercise, becoming obese, and so on. There are theories that these changes affect our immune systems. Similarly, we use more sunscreen and spend less time outdoors, reducing our body’s natural production of vitamin D. This vitamin, in the proper amounts, may ensure a healthful immune system. Sun safety is important, but there may be consequences that require attention with supplementation. Additional factors include the way food is processed, the timing of food introduction to children, pollution, and other environmental factors”. (Courtesy:www.allergicliving.com)
Food Allergies: What are major food Allergens?
Although more than 160 foods can cause allergic reactions in people with food Allergies, the law identifies the eight most common allergenic foods. These foods account for 90 percent of food allergic reactions, and are the food sources from which many other ingredients are derived (such as whey from milk). The eight foods identified by the law are: 1. Milk 2. Eggs 3. Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod) 4. Crustacean shellfish (e.g. crab, lobster, shrimp) 5. Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans) 6. Peanuts 7. Wheat 8. Soybeans
Allergies
Symptoms of food allergies typically appear from within a few minutes to two hours after a person has eaten the food to which he or she is allergic. Allergic reactions can include: • Hives • Flushed skin or rash • Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth • Face, tongue, or lip swelling • Vomiting and/or diarrhea • Abdominal cramps • Coughing or wheezing • Dizziness and/or lightheadedness • Swelling of the throat and vocal cords • Difficulty breathing • Loss of consciousness If you’re allergic to a food ingredient, you probably look for it on the food product’s label. The law requires that food labels identify the food source names of all major food allergens used to make the food. This requirement is met if the common or usual name of an ingredient (e.g., buttermilk) that is a major food allergen already identifies that allergen’s food source name (i.e., milk). Otherwise, the allergen’s food source name must be declared at least once on the food label in one of two ways. Major food allergen names must appear: Courtesy: www.fda.gov
What are the major Environmental Allergies? Dust Mites
Dust mites are tiny bugs that live in bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and carpets. No matter how clean your house is, it’s impossible to completely get rid of dust mites. However, you can limit contact, especially in the bedroom, if you: • Put special dust-proof covers on pillows, mattresses and box springs. Remove and clean the covers frequently. • Avoid bedding stuffed with foam rubber or kapok. • Limit the number of stuffed animals kept in bedrooms or put them in plastic containers.
Pollen Grasses, trees and weeds produce pollens that travel through the air and are inhaled. They cause seasonal allergy symptoms and trigger asthma. Pollens from trees are higher in the spring, grasses in the summer and weeds in the fall. This may vary depending on weather conditions and where you live. If possible: • Keep windows closed during pollen season, especially during the day.
Cockroaches
Cockroach droppings can not only trigger allergies but can trigger and bother asthma. Since cockroaches require food and moisture to survive, you can help reduce exposure by getting rid of sources of each. The following steps also should be taken: • Keep your kitchen clean and wash dishes promptly. • Make sure all food is stored in sealed containers. • Empty garbage and recycle bins frequently. • Avoid leaving food out. • Set roach traps. • Seal cracks in your home to prevent infestation.
Irritants • To avoid pollen, know which pollens you are sensitive to and then check pollen counts. In spring and summer, during tree and grass pollen season, levels are highest in the evening. In late summer and early fall, during ragweed pollen season, levels are highest in the morning. • Take a shower, wash your hair, and change clothing after working or playing outdoors.
Pets Allergic reactions to pets are caused by the animal’s dander. Short-haired pets are not any less likely to cause a reaction than long-haired animals. If you have an allergy to animals, it’s best not to get a new pet. If you already have a pet you cannot live without, you should: • Keep the pet outdoors or restrict it to a few rooms in the house. At the very least, keep the pet outside of the bedroom. • Wash hands after petting. • Bathe your pet once a week to reduce dander.
Mold Molds are found in outdoor air and can enter your home any time you open a door or window. Any house can develop a mold problem with the right conditions. Molds like to grow on wallboard, wood, or fabrics, but they will grow any place. They thrive in damp basements and closets, bathrooms (especially showers), places where fresh food is stored, refrigerator drip trays, house plants, air conditioners, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and old foam rubber pillows. You can control mold in your home if you: • Clean bathrooms, kitchens, and basements regularly and keep them well aired. • Do not use humidifiers. 21
• Smoke – Avoid tobacco smoke and do not allow anyone to smoke in your home or car. If you smoke, try to quit. Do not use woodburning stoves or fireplaces. • Odors – Stay away from strong odors such as perfume, hair spray, paint, cooking exhaust, cleaning products and insecticides. Room air fresheners and electronic air cleaners also can trigger symptoms. • Cold air – Cover your nose and mouth with a scarf. • Colds and infections – Wash hands frequently. • Exhaust – If you have an attached garage, don’t start the car and let it run in there. Fumes can make their way into the home even when the garage door is open. Courtesy: www.acaai.org

Homeopathy
Homeopathy – what is it – and what can it do? Tanya Kell (pictured) a Nashville based Certified Classical Homeopath looks at the history of Homeopathy, how it works and the types of conditions it can help with.
Common Myths “There are no studies showing that Homeopathy works” In fact there are high quality studies that show the effectiveness of homeopathy in a wide variety of conditions. If you would like to know more visit this page compiled by the National Center for Homeopathy http://www.homeopathycenter.org/ research. “Homeopathic medicines are just placebos” As the quality and sensitivity of scientific tools of measurement have become available the mechanism of Homeopathic action is on its way to being explained. In the meantime we measure remedies by their effects. People, do in fact, respond to the administration of Homeopathic remedies whether they believe in them or not. Homeopathy is highly effective for animals and babies for whom the placebo effect is not a factor.
What can Homeopathy do for me?
H
omeopathy has always been part of our healing landscape but was organized into a scientific system 250 years ago by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. It is currently practiced by over 250 thousand physicians and used by more than 500 million people around the world. Homeopathy is a safe, effective system of natural medicines used in extremely small amounts to stimulate the body to heal itself. The word Homeopathy means ‘similar suffering’ or ‘similar disease’. We see examples of this healing principal in support groups and 12 step programs. While there is a general similarity between members of a particular support group, Homeopathic
medicines are fine tuned to each individual and their specific symptom amalgamation. Homeopathy is not a synonym for natural. Homeopathic products are not herbs, oils or supplements. It is a completely different approach to healing that does not see the symptoms of disease as the enemy to be destroyed but rather as informers of a deeper imbalance in the individual. Symptoms are the body’s best attempt at curing itself and must be studied carefully. Each individual manifests illness in a slightly different way and two people with the same diagnosis will often require different Homeopathic medicines according to their unique symptoms. 22
Our nation is in a healthcare crisis. We rank last amongst developed countries. Medical treatment is the third leading cause of death in America. The use of multiple drugs and their interactions is a major challenge for physicians. Opiates, psychotropic drugs and antibiotics are widely overused and Americans are now expected to die younger than their parents for the first time. We must change how we care for our health. Homeopathy can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies. The medicines are low cost and have no drug interactions. Whether you seek to reverse chronic illness, beat and infection without antibiotics or recover from an injury homeopathy can help. Minor problems can often be resolved with self treatment using a good book or online resources. Any serious or long continued illness or injury should be monitored by a trained professional. Always seek appropriate medical attention. There are many choices for every condition dependent on the symptom picture. Learning to use homeopathy effectively takes time.

How to make sure you choose the right Homeopath • Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC) has been certifying professional homeopaths in the U.S. since 1991. • American Institute of Homeopathy certifies medical and osteopathic doctors in the U.S. via the American Board of Homeotherapeutics. • The Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (HANP) certifies naturopathic doctors in the U.S. A good resource to help you find a practitioner is the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH), which registers professional homeopaths in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Homeopaths need to be certified by CHC (above) before they can be registered with the NASH.
What questions should I ask? Given that the training and certification can vary, it is essential to research carefully. Ask friends or integrative providers for recommendations, and then be sure to ask the homeopath a number of questions. You may find many of the answers on the practitioner’s website, or you may need to schedule a phone call. • What training do you have? Did you attend a professional training program for classical homeopathy? Some excellent homeopaths may have learned predominantly through apprenticeship with a master homeopath. • How long have you been practicing? Do you have any areas of specialization?

Acupuncture
Migraines & Headaches –
How to find relief through Acupuncture Millions of people in the U.S. suffer from Headaches and Migraines and often try various treatments from medicines to diets without finding relief. There is a non-invasive, natural way to get some much-needed migraine relief: Acupuncture. In honor of June being National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, Modern Acupuncture, the nation’s first acupuncture franchise to offer the natural health and cosmetic benefits of acupuncture, has the solution for headache and migraine sufferers.
U
nfortunately, most people have experienced acute and chronic headaches at some point in their life, while others experience them on an everyday basis. Naturally, headaches may stem from dehydration, stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, etc. However, for some the cause is unknown and can create tremendous frustration. A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that Acupuncture can reduce migraine frequency in some patients. This study found that patients’ migraines were reduced from nearly five to three per month. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that’s been validated for thousands of years. This alternative treatment focuses on treating the entire body as well as the mind, allowing you to heal from the inside out. Acupuncture offers a more natural approach to migraines and headaches without the side effects that often accompany medication. Luckily, Nashville residents and other surrounding communities have the advantage of exploring this treatment at the first Tennessee Modern Acupuncture clinic located in Brentwood. Modern Acupuncture offers a very effective and enhanced acupuncture experience that does not require the removal of clothing to access full-body health. A licensed acupuncturist utilizes tiny needles to trigger an increase in blood flow to the areas that need it
most. When healthy blood flow is restored, the body’s natural healing abilities are activated, sending the body back into balance. Patients typically find relief after one session and ongoing treatments enhance the benefits and keep symptoms at bay. Additionally, traditional acupuncture can treat many more ailments outside of headaches and migraines. Traditional acupuncture treats conditions such as chronic and acute pain, sports injuries, insomnia, depression, digestive disorders, stress and anxiety, allergies and respiratory issues, and more. It also invokes deep relaxation. One key differentiator that sets Modern Acupuncture apart from others is the cosmetic acupuncture treatment. Cosmetic acupuncture is an ancient beauty secret that is a virtually painless and natural approach to reducing the signs of aging and helping your skin regain its youthful glow. Cosmetic acupuncture is used for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, lifting and toning muscles, evening out skin tone and texture, increasing circulation and more. To learn more about how to treat these conditions or Acupuncture as a whole, visit the Modern Acupuncture Brentwood clinic located at 1731 Mallory Lane Suite 109, Brentwood, TN 37027 in Cool Springs or call to book your first appointment at (615) 953-1400.

Essential Oils
Essential Oils for stings and bites Sheila Mcginnis (pictured) this months looks at how Essential Oils can help if you are bitten or stung by an insect-and any allergic reactions.
Plantain, also known as fleawort
H
ave you been bitten by a mosquito? Stung by a bee or wasp? What about the effects of poison ivy or poison oak? Well if you have you know the misery of the itchy and painful rash or welt it leaves behind. You could grab a steroid cream to relieve the inflammation and itch, but are you aware of the side effects of using steroid creams for longterm (over four weeks)? It can lead to skin thinning, bruising, increased hair growth where the cream is being applied, and of course a possible allergic reaction. Below are some natural alternatives: First of all keep in mind for infants you would only use 1-2 drops of essential oils (EO) to 1 tbs of carrier oil, for children ages 3-5 use 1-3 drops of EO to 1-2 tsp of carrier oil, and for adults most oils are safe to be put directly on the spot and better to layer the oil or you could mix in a carrier oil to cover a larger area.
Oils and herbs to have on hand are: Lavender, Frankincense, Thyme, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile, Calendula, and Eucalyptus, Comfrey, and Plantain (not the fruit but the weed). Having even just one or two of these oils, herbs, or weeds will be soothing and beneficial to a lot of the allergic reactions we could get from our spring and summer bites and rashes. Let’s discuss the one thing I’ve listed that’s not an EO or a herb, but a weed! Plantain, also known as fleawort grows in just about any yard in the USA. It’s edible even. If you are at a park or in your yard and don’t have your “natural emergency kit” near you, just grab a leaf or two, chew to release its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory super-powers and place it on the sting and bites. You could even mix with a lotion or a bit of beeswax and coconut oil to apply to poison ivy. 27
For most rashes and itching, issues mix 1-2 drops of lavender, 1-2 drops of peppermint, and 2-3 drops of Roman Chamomile to 1 Tbs of coconut oil and apply to the location as needed. For Wasps, Bees, and Hornet stings you will need to remove the stinger, apply a cold compress of 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar, 1 drop of thyme, 2-3 drops of Roman Chamomile, 2 drops of lavender, and 1-2 drops of peppermint. Apply this compress up to 3-4 times during the day. If you have Comfrey available you can lay the leaf on the area or even make a poultice with all the above. For Mosquitoes, you can use Lavender and/or Frankincense. For Ticks, you will want to carefully get the tick out (put the tick in a jar and label it when you were bitten and where you were in case you have serious issues so that your doctor may be able to identify what you may possibly have). Use Lavender, 1-2 drops every five minutes for 30-45 minutes. Another recipe I really like for rashes or bites, that has some swelling to it, is mixing EO with witch hazel for a simple relief spray. The other recipe I like is using these oils to prevent insect bites in the first place. There are a lot of different recipes online for bug repellents, but if you have peppermint, eucalyptus, a citrus (lemongrass or lemon), thyme, and/or lavender use up to 5 drops of all or even one or two of these oils in a small spray bottle with distilled water and spray before you go out and even take your diffuser outside on your deck. There are so many more recipes as well as advice about using oils and herbs for allergic reactions, but I hope you can start with these recipes and see how they help. If you have a favorite recipe let me know at l_mcginnis@bellsouth.net.

Healthy eating
The worst Foods for your Heart… Makenzie Jones (pictured), rounds up the latest advice on foods to avoid if you want to keep healthy heart.
I
nformation available about heart health has shifted over time. It is not as much against the red meat as it used to be, but the main culprit may be surprising to some. Sugar has become one of the body’s worst enemies and is also one of the most prevalent in society. Ways that technology, food production and preparation have changed introduced more harmful factors into foods that are addictive, causing people to have a hard time recognizing or avoiding them. In line with the idea that red meats are hard on your heart, it is wise to limit intake because of
saturated fat and cholesterol. When eating out, the red meat may not be as much of a source of harm as the toppings, sauces, and sides such as butter and cream. The heme-iron and other important aspects of red meat are key to a healthy body, so the main thing to look out for is the lean quality and preparation of the cut of meat. Processed, cured, and fermented meats lead the pack of meats to avoid, adding salt and preservatives to increase shelf life. These include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, and other cold cuts. Two iconic American favorites have a deadly combo of meat, processed cheese, and bread. Fast food burgers and pizza have multiple sources of saturated fat and sodium coupled with carbs making them two to avoid. For this reason, MeatLovers Pizza is on the American Heart Association’s list of “Salty Six.” Another category of foods that includes meat and more is fried foods. Fried chicken, French
Fast food burgers and pizza have multiple sources of saturated fat and sodium coupled with carbs making them two to avoid. fries, onion rings, tomatoes, are just a few common examples among many other things due to the increasing popularity of frying random foods for the fun of it. Conventional frying methods create trans fats which raises bad cholesterol (LDL) and lowers the good kind (HDL). It also brings oxidants into the body systems, changing structures of vitamins and antioxidants that the heart and body need.
…And some of the best Foods for a healthy Heart Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in Tennessee. And you may be surprised to hear that plaque buildup inside your heart’s arteries actually starts in childhood, so it’s never too early to starting eating better for your heart’s health! In fact, 80% of heart disease and stroke can be prevented. Lindsey Joe RDN, LDN of the Meal Planning Method lists her 10 foods for a healthier heart: 1. FRUITS AND VEGGIES. An easy first step to eating better for heart health is to include more fruits and vegetables at your meals and snacks. Fruits and veggies are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. Try enjoying colorful produce that’s in season. Spring brings some fruit and veggie favorites like asparagus, collard greens, corn, pineapple, and strawberries. 2. PULSES. You may be more familiar with beans, lentils, and chickpeas – also known as pulses! Research has shown that eating these plant proteins can lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure and help with weight management – all of which are risk factors for heart disease. Try them in replace of ground meat or on top of salads.
3. BERRIES. While it’s true that any fruit or vegetable can benefit your heart, blueberries and blackberries may be particularly beneficial thanks to their anthocyanins, which give the fruits their rich color. Studies show that these anthocyanins reduce blood pressure and help protect your artery walls so we develop less plaque. Top your yogurt, cereal, or salad with blueberries and blackberries or enjoy them as is for an on-the-go snack. 4. LOW-FAT DAIRY. Dairy foods can be an important source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein, but also minerals like magnesium and potassium that can help keep your blood pressure within a healthy range. When choosing dairy foods like milk, yogurt, and cheese, go for low30
fat or no-fat options to reduce your saturated fat intake and improve your cholesterol levels. 5. LIQUID VEGETABLE OILS. Of the fats we eat, we want them to be heart-healthy. Using liquid vegetable oils, such as olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, and even walnut oil when cooking is an easy way to accomplish this. You can bake, saute, and stir-fry foods with your favorite liquid vegetable oils. 6. WHOLE GRAINS. Whole grains (like corn, oats, quinoa, and rice) and whole grain products are higher in B vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber than their refined counterparts. Because of this, people who eat three servings of whole grains a day have been shown to reduce their risk of heart disease by 25-36% and stroke by 37%! Try using whole cornmeal for cornbread and buy whole grain breads and pastas for busy weeknight meals. 7. WALNUTS. Walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids (the same heart-healthy fat found in fatty fish), but are a lot easier to stash in your pocket or purse. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown

Many people have heard about Ramen noodles being loaded with sodium, but a hidden problem is that they are first deep fried, too. The American Heart Association has launched an initiative called #BreakUpWithSalt aiming to make changes from the policymakers, to producers, to people. Kristin Palmer from the AHA of Greater Nashville confirms that around 75% of the sodium people eat comes from packaged and restaurant foods. She says that “You deserve the right to choose how much sodium is in your food.” Margarine can be used in cooking meat, side dishes, vegetables, and casseroles. Butter was previously the bad guy, but now data is leaning toward margarine and shortening since they are artificial substitutions made of partially hydrogenated oils and trans fats. Chips (baked or deep fried) and buttered popcorn are also common sources of sodium and trans fats. In general, salt is one of the worst food additives people use on a daily basis, increasing blood pressure and the risk of obesity, heart attack, and heart disease.
Refined carbs like white bread are higher in additives and sugar and lower in fiber than the whole grains they come from. These refined starches quickly turn to sugar in the body, causing blood sugar spikes and cravings. Even more sources of refined carbs and additives aside from the typical bread and pasta are condiments like ketchup and salad dressing, pasta sauce, and yogurt. Baked goods, candy, cereals, and jarred frosting are packed with sugar and preservatives to keep them shelf stable and sweet-tasting as long as possible. Sugar is linked with hypertension, heart failure, obesity, and clogged arteries. Baked goods are also higher in fat, possibly trans and saturated, so combining sugar and fats is even harder on the heart. Sugar is abundant in drinks, specifically soda and fruit drinks. This added sugar triggers inflammation and blood sugar spikes, stressing artery walls and increasing the cardiovascular risk. Sodas and diet sodas alike are problematic from high fructose corn syrup and alterations to gastrointestinal bacteria. People who drink diet tend to overcompensate and
consume more calories than they would if they had drunk regular soda. Energy drinks are one of the highest sugar-loaded beverages coupled with extreme caffeine, literally “a heart attack waiting to happen.” Even those boosters labeled “natural” (and are not regulated) can produce a rapid heart rate and arrhythmia. Energy drinks encourage a cycle of lack of sleep and artificial energy consumption, a spiral difficult to escape. Taking all these factors into account led the AHA to create the Heart-Check Mark that denotes foods that meet specific recommendations for a healthy heart. Studies show that people who eat more consciously with these guides have better diet quality and fewer heart disease risk factors than those who do not. For more information on what to beware of to keep your heart “Healthy for Good”, visit @HeartNashville on Twitter and American Heart Association – Greater Nashville on Facebook. Local events and information can also be found online, including a local chapter of the National AHA Heart Walk. This year’s will take place on Saturday, September 15th at Vanderbilt’s Capers Field.
to help decrease triglyceride levels and slow plaque buildup in your arteries. Try adding walnuts to oatmeal and salads or have a handful of walnuts as a satisfying snack. 8. FATTY FISH. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming 3.5 ounces of cooked fish twice a week. Fatty fish in particular, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, lake trout, albacore tuna (in water), and herring, are great catches that contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that these fats decrease risk of abnormal heartbeats and lower blood pressure slightly. 9. FLAXSEEDS. These small seeds are best ground so that our bodies get the benefit of their alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), another type of omega-3 fat. Try a couple of tablespoons of ground flaxseed in your oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothie. 10. GREEN TEA. Adopting a regular tea time can be good for your heart thanks to the antioxidants found in tea! Green tea in particular may help lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase “good” HDL cholesterol levels. Brew it hot or cold as a new and flavorful way to hydrate and help out your heart. Migraines
Suffering from Migraines? This non-drug treatment can help Nearly 10% of the population suffers from Migraines. But by using LENS Neurofeedback, a significant number of people are finding relief and getting their lives back to normal. Sheri Rowney (pictured) from Harmonized Brain Centers in Nashville, explains how it can help sufferers.
“I
have a headache.” These are words most adults have uttered at some point in their lives. Due to the many types of headaches, it is an unfortunate fact of life that we will all have one sooner or later. Thankfully, most of them are short lived, not too intense, and we can soon go about our daily activities without disruption or interference. For others though, headaches can be a chronic condition that literally change the way they live their lives. For them, the pain of their headaches is enough to disrupt their lives, take away their happiness and joy, and can cause anxiety and depression. They’re called Migraines. Nearly one in four households in the U.S. has someone that has been diagnosed with Migraines. It is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world and over 10% of U.S. children are diagnosed each year with a Migraine. What are these headaches and what can be done to help?
Migraines are not just a bad headache. There are many neurological symptoms that go along with the headache that determine what makes it a Migraine. The headache itself is a severe throbbing and recurring pain, usually felt on one side of the head but can often be felt on both sides. This pain can also be accompanied by visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sensitivity to sound, lights, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face. The Migraine usually lasts between four and 72 hours before it is completely gone. For most Migraine sufferers, these attacks are usually once or twice a month, but for over four million people, they are a daily occurrence. For over 90% of sufferers, these attacks are debilitating and they cannot work or live their normal lives until it is over. Depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders are common and over 20% of sufferers are disabled, unable to hold down a job, or go to school.
According to studies done by the Migraine Research Foundation, in 2015, the U.S. spent over $36 billion in healthcare and lost productivity due to Migraines. That number includes $5.4 billion in medical costs alone treating the 38 million diagnosed cases of Migraines in our country. This is a staggering number and many are not able to afford the medication necessary to control the symptoms that are negatively impacting their life. Are there alternative treatments available for Migraines? Yes there are. Many find relief through diet changes, herbal remedies, life style changes, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and Neurofeedback, to name a few. At Harmonized Brain Centers in Nashville, we provide a treatment called LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback); a pain free, non-invasive treatment using low frequency radio waves to disrupt the pattern of brain waves that may not be working efficiently, allowing them to reset into a more effective and efficient way and stop Migraines from occurring. After just a few short treatments, many clients report their headaches to be less frequent, less intense, and shorter, and many go on to be headache free in only 10 to 12 sessions. LENS also helps to quiet the brain, allowing for better sleep, less anxiety, and often lifts the cloud of depression that goes along with Migraines. After an initial brain map that takes about an hour, subsequent treatments only take about a half hour a week; leaving you feeling relaxed and clear, ready to take on the world. If you are interested in a FREE consultation to discuss how we can help you with your Migraines, please call us at (615) 331-8762. Or visit: www.harmonizedbraincenterstn.com
Our daughter was failing at School because of Migraines, until we discovered LENS Neurofeedback. “We brought our 14 year old daughter to Harmonized Brain Centers because of her extremely debilitating, constant migraines that she has had after a slip on the ice two years prior. She had been on medication with limited success and we were desperate to find better results for her. Within three weeks of LENS, her migraines had subsided, she was sleeping better and felt more clear headed and more focused in school. As a side note, she had always been a high achiever in math but after her fall, she had sort of leveled out and while still making ok grades, it wasn’t coming as easy for her as before. We had assumed that she had just leveled out in her ability but after the LENS, she is once again grade levels above where she was and a happy and successful teenager. There is no way to express our thanks and gratitude to LENS and to Sheri for giving our daughter her life back.” - AW 32
CBD Therapy
The Pros and Cons of CBD Oil
A premium product will contain only the CBD packaged in hemp oil with possibly a flavoring agent for taste.
Possibly the most discussed new supplement to hit the market in the past year is Cannabidiol, better known by the initials CBD. In this article Tim Web (pictured) of GoCBDHealth, based in Nashville look at its benefits, and the concerns that surround it.
Many people ask about potential drug test issues. A company cannot guarantee you that CBD oil will not trigger a “false positive” on a drug test. However, if you are purchasing from a reputable, hemp-derived source you would have to consume the CBD at incredibly high levels to possibly fail a drug test. If you have a concern ask your physician to document that you are using CBD oil for a legitimate medical condition. As with any supplement or vitamin, always consult your health care professional before adding CBD to your health care regimen. Potential side effects include GI upset, loss of appetite, and somnolence. CBD is non-addictive and does not appear to have any potential for overdose.
T
he 2014 Farm Bill (Agricultural Act of 2014) allowed the growth and harvesting of agricultural Hemp, a crop that had once seen widespread usage in the US, but due to its close association with its high-inducing twin sister “Marijuana”, had faded from use in the US for over 70 years. Hemp has thousands of agricultural and industrial uses and was a foundational crop in the American Colonies, (both Washington and Jefferson grew hemp. Henry Ford built an early car from hemp fiber and used hemp oil to fuel it.) You may have noticed hemp protein, hemp cereals, and all sorts of clothing in the past year made from hemp. The 2014 Bill mandated that agricultural, or “Industrial” hemp, must contain less than .3% THC to be legal. By comparison, Marijuana contains 15-20% THC, 50-60 times more THC than that found in hemp. Hemp cannot get a person “high” due to the minute amount of THC. CBD is not “Medical Marijuana” nor is it a controlled substance. It is legal in all 50 states as a nutritional supplement. Tennessee passed legislation in May of 2017 reaffirming Federal guidelines regarding Industrial/Agricultural Hemp. In 2017 the DEA also affirmed that CBD is not a controlled substance. Both the Marijuana and Hemp plants contain hundreds of potential therapeutic agents, with THC and CBD being the most prominent. CBD has the capability to put the body back in homeostasis (state of balance) and offers many potential therapeutic benefits including: anti-tumor, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, anti-emetic (nausea and vomiting), anti-inflammatory, anxiolytyc, anti-diabetic, and neuro-protective properties. CBD activates serotonin receptors, giving it potential anti-depressant properties as well. CBD has been utilized in clinical trials to treat chronic pain, anxiety, ADHD, autism, diabetes, dementia, seizure disorders, auto-immune disorders, MS, Crohns/colitis, depression, PTSD, and numerous other chronic conditions. (A note about CBD and cancer. Both THC and CBD have shown potential benefit in cancer, but at “doses” several times
higher than most of the commercial CBD supplements sold.) Many integrative and holistic health care practitioners are now utilizing CBD oil therapy in patients who have not responded to conventional medical therapy, or who do not wish to subject their body to long term pharmaceutical usage. CBD is not a drug. It is considered a nutritional supplement, containing as many as 400 therapeutic compounds. CBD appears to be able to allow the body to ‘heal” itself via its balancing effect on the endocannibinoid system, which is found in humans and mammals. (Both dogs and cats tend to respond very positively to CBD in regard to pain and anxiety.) CBD cannot be patented as a drug as pharmaceutical companies cannot patent a plant, although there are synthetic versions that may be on the market soon.
Sources
There are numerous marketers of CBD, with more coming online monthly it seems. One thing to note is that Hemp Oil and CBD oil are not necessarily the same thing. Hemp oil is derived from the stalk and may be used as part of the supplement, but Hemp oil does not necessarily contain any CBD. A 2017 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that 70% of CBD supplements sold online were mislabeled, with over 21% containing measurable levels of THC (which may make the product illegal in many states, as well as potentially causing failed drug tests.) Be careful to select an organic, non-GMO product from a company that tells you exactly where their CBD is farmed and provides independent, third-party certificate of analysis. If a company does not offer this third party validation you quite possibly may pay a lot of money for an inferior product with little or no potential health benefit. Some companies import inexpensive industrial hemp from abroad. The CO2 extraction method ensures that the full spectrum of the CBD is preserved. Beware of companies that add fillers. 33
Considerations and precautions.
Dosing
Dosing, or serving size, is very individualized. In looking at numerous studies via PubMed, studies using CBD have utilized from 10mg to over 2 grams per day. CBD is biphasic, meaning, it can have different effects at different doses. For instance, a low dose may actually stimulate a person while a higher dose may make them sleepy. Start slowly with a small amount (2-4mg a day), and increase as needed. CBD has about a nine hour half life, therefore it should be taken twice a day for maximum benefit.
Delivery method
CBD is sold in all sort of different sources, from edibles to capsules to liquids to vaping liquids. Vaping may allow the highest percentage of the CBD to enter the body but vaping can cause significant lung injury (popcorn lung) and is discouraged by most healthcare providers. Capsules are easy to use but do not allow a high percentage of the CBD to reach the blood stream. Liquids, which are taken sublingually (under the tongue) appear to be the best method of delivery, with creams allowing direct application to areas of chronic pain and inflammation. Bereavement
How to Deal with the Loss of a Loved One Sadhguru, yogi, mystic and the foremost authority on yoga says when we lose a loved one it is the time to cherish the memories of how they enhanced our life, not to fall into grief and depression.
C
oping with the loss of a close friend or family member may be one of the hardest challenges that many of us will face. When we lose a loved one our grief can be intense. Loss is understood as a natural part of life, but we can still be overcome by shock and confusion, leading to prolonged periods of sadness or depression. Research shows that most people can recover from loss with their own strength and with the passage of time if they have social support and healthy habits.
Sadhguru: When we lose someone who is dear to us – either by death, disease, or desertion – whichever way we lose them, the biggest problem is that they leave an empty space that they had occupied in our lives. We need to understand, the very nature of life is such that you and your loved ones have to die at some point. The only question is who will die first. This may sound brutal, but that is not the intention. It is very important to come to terms with these things. Otherwise, we will tell ourselves pretty things that will solace us for today, and tomorrow morning, reality will torment us again. We will do the same things again and again. It is important for us to know that we and those around us are not going to be here forever. When we are here, we must show everyone our best face. The problem is only that, if a doctor tells you that you are going to die tomorrow, then everyone comes and shows you their best face. If you say, “I’m going to die after fifty years,” most people will not care. But we do not know whether it will be in fifty years or tomorrow. You know you will die and they will die. You just do not know when, so shouldn’t you show your best face to them?
So, when people dear to us pass away, one thing is, they are dear to us because they have enhanced our lives in some way, maybe in many ways. If people around us have enhanced our lives and we cherish them, we must cherish them joyfully – we should not rue their exit. We should value them for the enhancement they have brought to our lives; for the sweetness and tenderness they may have shared with us. In some way, at least sometimes, they made you feel complete. Let their memory always bring tears of joy and love to you, not of grief. They mattered to you because in some way, they were wonderful to you. Let the memory of them bring back those wonderful aspects to you, rather than drive you into grief and depression. Driving yourself into grief and depression means you have not come to terms with the most fundamental aspect of life – mortality. Whether they are good or bad, they all will die. This is not to ridicule your loss. I understand what your deceased loved ones mean to you. But I want you to remember them for all the wonderful things that they were. Not for making yourself feel terrible about their exit. If you had died before them, you would have left them in a bad place – so, please stand up as a human being. Whatever wonderful things that happened to you, in some way have to find expression. If they have meant many wonderful things to you, please express that to those who are still living around you. This is how life goes on. The reality is the piece of life that you are is still there – the accessories are falling off over time. As you age, your grandfather will die, your father will die; sometimes, your spouse will die. Some people will lose their hair. Some people will even lose their head – this is not a joke. Some people will lose parts of their bodies. Some people will lose relationships. Some people will lose things, power, position, or money. 34
When life disillusions you, you may sit up and become enlightened, or you may become depressed. If all the illusions go away, that is called self-realization. Right now, you are hanging on to illusions, valuing them and being identified with them so much that you are fighting to keep them. This is maya – it goes on as if it is real, until suddenly, it is gone. In a way, you always knew it. From the moment you were born, your clock has been ticking, and one day, it will stop. Well, we try to stretch it. We try to slow it down. We try to make best use of the time we have. We try to make it as profound as possible. It is very important that life touches you. If life should touch you on a deeper level, you have to put down the world that you have made up in your mind. “No Recovery, No Fee”
Summertime Accidents (What to do?) By David E. High, Attorney-At-Law
Unfortunately, there are a lot of accidents in the summertime when people are out participating in various outdoor activities. If you are injured due to the negligence of another person, you may have a claim that could be covered under insurance. Possible Insurance Coverage If you are injured on the premises of another due to the negligence of the owner, occupier or renter of the premises, or a dangerous condition on the premises, it is likely that your injury would be covered under their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. If they have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance and you were injured due to the negligence of the owner or occupier of
the premises, then their insurance carrier will be responsible. There also may be some medical payment coverage under the homeowner’s or renter’s insurance that will pay a certain amount of medical bills regardless of fault for injuries occurring on the premises. Therefore, if you are injured on the premises of another, due to their negligence, you should promptly contact an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation. 35
At High Law Office, PLLC, we have experience in prosecuting and handling these types of claims and would be happy to represent you under a contingent “No Recovery, No Fee” basis. Tennessee has a very short one-year statute of limitations, so you must act promptly. Also, evidence disappears, so act promptly on your summertime accident. Tea with a twist
restaurants such as Sunflower Cafe sell this brew. I tried her Ginger Kombucha. With a delicious bite of ginger, this refreshing drink was the perfect way to end a long day. Kelly found a love for Kombucha and expanded her brew from there. “I’ve always been interested in wellness--my degree is in Health & Exercise Science. When I read about the health benefits of Kombucha, I began brewing it for my family. Soon my friends wanted a taste, then a vendor that carried products made locally in Nashville began carrying Booch in their store. Nine years later, Booch can be found at 30 locations around Nashville and is still handcrafted using all organic ingredients. We are continuing to grow and experiment with new flavors, but we always stay organic to create the highest quality Kombucha from a clean environment.” She currently crafts five different flavors including original, Peach, Ginger, Raspberry, and Chai.

Time to try Kombucha! Kombucha, a drink originated from Tea, is a growing trend popping up in health food stores across America. Veronica Williams, (pictured) went looking for some Kombucha in Nashville. Here are her top three spots if you are looking for this unique fermented brew. The Root Cellar – Folklore Ferments (High Garden) Kombucha sampled: Passionfruit Nashville’s The Root Cellar, home of Folklore Ferments, is located in the back of High Garden Tea Store. Given its name you walk into a shop that feels much like a fairytale, it’s like being in some magical woods where you can find good witches and little gnomes making delicious brews; which is a great description of their Kombucha bar in the back. This woodsy-inspired bar features several different Kombucha blends, as well as several other fermented beverages that are similar to Kombucha. Their love for their craft has lead to many creations such as: Passion Fruit Kombucha a bright passion fruit flavor and floral undertones, it is one of the most unique Kombucha I have yet to try.
They also brew a wide range of flavors and are always bringing more on board. They feature several other fermented products from local farms such as The Fermented Farmer, Kim’s Chi, and Short Mountain. Fermentation feels almost like a lost art and High Garden is here to bring it back to Nashville! Their employees are incredibly knowledgeable about the blends and the process. It’s a great place to stop to try out some new brews or even get a growler to take home.
The Booch Kombucha sampled: Ginger Found at many local health food stores and small grocers in Nashville, The Booch is brewed in Nashville by Kelly Snavely, a Nashvillian herself since 2005. Grocers such as Turnip Truck and vegan 36
Kombucha sampled: House Kombucha Avo is a wondrous place for vegans in Nashville. Offering a large choice of vegan dishes and an array of delicious cocktails, it’s what Nashville needs to satisfy its growing vegan community. To go alongside your Kimchi Spring Rolls and Wild Nashville Salad enjoy their house Kombucha. Made in-house this light Kombucha with its ginger undertone is the perfect addition to any meal. Vanessa the manager of Avo began her Kombucha with the scooby her dad gave her. “What started as a 1-gallon batch, grew to two, then five, and it started taking over my house!” says Vanessa. Thanks to High Garden’s large selection of teas, Vanessa was able to experiment and create new flavors. She now makes her Kombucha in large quantities for Avo giving them their own unique personalized Kombucha. Vanessa ‘s journey with Kombucha has been a labor of love. “I love producing a beverage that everyone can enjoy, that is refreshing and fun to explore. As a fermented beverage, it’s different every time! Fermentation is an improvisation that the ecology around us is in on. I love that. I’m so excited to see more and more Kombucha on the local market.” So next time you are at Avo make sure to try their house Kombucha. If you are looking for your new favorite Kombucha or just want to to go on a Kombucha hop around Nashville, make sure to try out these great spots!
Dental Health
A new smile in one day Tooth loss is a major problem for many people. But there are solutions that can help put that smile back! Dr. Jaime A. Romero Jr, D.D.S. (pictured) suggests a quick, easy and time saving procedure. Why Choose All-on-4? Aside from the obvious benefits, there are many other reasons to choose an All-on-4 replacement. One of the biggest incentives is the fact that the implants become completely permanent. This is thanks to titanium’s unique ability to fuse with bone. You’ll never have to worry about your new teeth slipping or sliding while you’re speaking, which can inspire greater confidence. The All-on-4 setup also makes eating much easier than with traditional dentures. Since the teeth are anchored permanently, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy apples, carrots, nuts, and beyond. It’s by far the most natural-feeling setup. You don’t have to worry about messy adhesive glues or strips with an All-on-4 set, either. Since they don’t need to be removed for cleaning, you can rest assured that you won’t forget to remove them on schedule.
Ready to Smile?
M
illions of Americans suffer from tooth loss. In fact, experts estimate that as many as 35 million people have no upper or lower teeth at all. Have you been dreaming about a brand new smile to combat your tooth loss? Are you hesitant to pursue tooth replacement options because of the length of time and number of procedures it takes? All-on-4 is a modern system for changing teeth that can be done very quickly and efficiently, saving you time and money.
What is All-on-4? All-on-4 refers to a combination treatment that involves dental implants and implant-anchored dentures. During this procedure, four titanium
rods are embedded within your jaw. They’ll be strategically placed by your surgeon for maximum efficiency to fit your mouth. Once the implants are securely installed, custom high-quality dentures are anchored to them. The name “All-on-4” comes from the fact that only four implants are needed to securely hold a whole set of teeth. This means you could have both your upper and lower sets replaced with only four implants in each setting. In the past, dental implants were used for every single tooth. As you can imagine, this would be significantly more painful and time consuming than an All-on-4 procedure. As a result, you can get a brand new smile in just one day. 37
If you’re considering an All-on-4 set, call us today. Our surgeons would love to meet with you and discuss the process in-depth. We can answer any questions you may have. Remember, the sooner you call, the sooner you’ll have the smile you’ve always dreamed of. All we need is one day!

Your amazing Brain For all the advances in research and science, the brain remains the most complex and mysterious human organ. In month’s article, Chris Taleghani (pictured) shares some amazing things that we do know about the brain in hopes that you will realize the power within each of us.
to interact with others, to solve problems and to compete tasks. However, the brain actually turns “on” when we are sleeping and turning “off” our ctivity. Scientists are still working on all the reasons for this and learning about how hard our brain is working while we are sleeping. Thus, the additional reason that consistently good sleeping habits are imperative for healthy living.
Exploring the Brain: Our brain is a living tissue and is 80% water. It looks like a squishy, pink and jelly-like organ because of the large amount of blood and water content in the tissue. Actually, the equivalence of about three full soda cans of blood flows through our brain each minute. The brain of an adult human weighs around three pounds, and it makes up just 2% of the body’s weight and uses around 20% of the body’s energy. Several chemicals are also located in the brain, and keeping these chemicals balanced and the nerve cells firing properly are essential to a healthy brain.
Tips for a Healthier Brain:
T
he brain is the center of the human nervous system, continuous with the spinal cord and enclosed and protected by the skull (also called cranium which is made up of 22 bones that are joined together). It is controlling our thoughts, movements, memories and decisions. Did you know that research indicates that the average person has about 70,000 thoughts per day? The brain contains billions of nerve cells that send and receive information around the body. These microscopic cells are called neurons. Brain cells can live up to an entire lifetime, making it the longest living cell in our body.
The Activity in Our Brain Never Stops. Tiny chemical and electrical signals, or “messages” are racing between neurons along billions of
“neuron highways” whenever we move, think, dream, or really do anything. Our neurons create and send more messages than all of the phones in the entire world. All of the neurons together can generate enough electricity to power a 10-watt light bulb. Did you know that not all neurons are the same? These “messages” travel at different speeds within different types of neurons. Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the body, but for reasons that are not yet fully understood, the interaction is with opposite sides. The right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body, and vice versa. Do you think the brain is more active at night or during the day? Logically, we would think during the day because of all that we do to move around, 38
We do things like eating healthy and getting good sleep because we know that they will help us to have a healthier brain. Did you know that there are also exercises to help keep our brain mentally fit? If this article has sparked an interest in the brain and/ or you want to help improve your memory, focus, visual perception, problem solving skills, and so many other functions of the brain, consider going to websites with online content and games or even working crossword puzzles and playing chess on a regular basis. You can increase your brain’s power.
