The Nashville Food Project recipient of Sustainability award
healthy recipe
Taco Frittata By Laura Lea Goldberg
Total Time: 45 Minutes Servings: 6-8 Ingredients: SPICE MIXTURE • 4 teaspoons paprika • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons onion powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 2 teaspoons sea salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper • 1 1/2 tablespoons maple sugar (can sub coconut or date sugar)
Volunteers weeding and harvesting fresh produce Last month, Governor Bill Haslam and the Department of Environment Conservation Commissioner, Bob Martineau, presented The Nashville Food Project with this prestigious award that ‘rewards individuals and organizations for their efforts in helping to protect Nashville’s natural resources.’ The Nashville Food Project is an organization that strives to
alleviate hunger throughout Nashville through its mission-based work that is centered around helping communities grow, cook and share food. Using sustainable, organic, and environmentally-friendly farming and food preparation processes, The Nashville Food Project owns and operates five garden sites throughout the area. www.thenashvillefoodproject.org
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350. Mix spices together and set aside. Feel free to sub store bought spice mix, just look for something low-sodium and additive-free. In a bowl, whisk together eggs and coconut milk. Set aside. 2. Heat a cast iron skillet to medium heat and add olive oil. When oil is shimmering lightly, add onion and bell peppers. Allow to saute, stirring infrequently, for 3-4 minutes or until softened and onions are fragrant and translucent. 3. Remove veggies from skillet (I put them on a little plate that I keep next to me). Add ground beef and turn to medium-high heat. Allow beef to brown around the edges, stirring infrequently for approximately 5 minutes. When beef is almost completely cooked through, add spice mixture. It will seem like a lot, but you want it all! Stir to incorporate spice mixture evenly throughout. 4. Add egg/coconut milk mixture and mix carefully to combine all ingredients evenly. 5. Place skillet in oven and bake for 25 minutes or until eggs are solid to touch and the edges are golden brown. Allow to cool 15 minutes before slicing. For more information: www.llbalanced.com

ADHD-increasing due to Genetics? With some 12% of US children now diagnosed with ADHD – an increase of 43% in just over a decade – a new report from Science Daily suggests that the causes could be found in toxic heavy metals that have been increasingly passed by genetics from one generation to the next. These are found in our food because of commercial pesticides and the polluted air we breathe. A further study confirmed this and added that the recycling of electronic waste, processed food and even baby

The report suggests that many of the effects of heavy metals and toxins in the body can be reduced with the correct diet, with a particular emphasis on avoiding processed foods and concentrating more on organic vegetables and fruit. prevention education materials will be passed out by the health department to residents in both neighborhoods. They will also monitor standing water in search for mosquito larvae and apply larvicide to areas with mosquito larvae. Some tips to protect against mosquito bites are: limiting time outdoors at dusk/ nighttime, wear mosquito repellent when outside at dusk or dawn, wear shoes, socks, long sleeve shirts, and pants during dusk/dawn when mosquitoes are most prevalent. The Health Department adds, “Fortunately, most people infected with West Nile virus will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.”
Lulu Restaurant: Progress tastes good.
Few people understand food labelling
Germantown’s newest chic health restaurant, Lulu
A survey in the US found that eight in 10 Americans don’t know what they’re supposed to be feeding themselves to stay fit and free from illness. The problem is that product labelling is very confusing and that just because a food is low in sugar may mean it is very high in saturated fat. Food manufacturers do nothing to clarify the position, often marketing a product as healthy when in fact it contains ingredients that are far from it. Two examples to help you: When looking at the back of a package, food should generally contain less than 3g of fat per 100g; 5g sugar; and 0.3 salt. And food
Lulu is one of Germantown’s newest health restaurants, located only steps away from the entrance to Nashville’s First Tennessee Park. With tall windows, wooden accents, and a funky pink logo, Lulu’s chic exterior preps the mind of its hungry visitors with an aesthetically pleasing entrance. As my best friend and I walked into Lulu, we were met by a glowing neon sign reading “YES TO ALL,” that was hanging on a beautiful display of polished white subway tiles.
that contains more than 17.5g per 100g of fat; or 22.5g of sugar and 1.5g of salt should only be eaten occasionally. If you are concerned about your intake of sugars, make sure that ‘added sugars’ are not listed as one of the first few ingredients. Other names for added sugars include: corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, dextrose, sucrose, honey, and maple syrup. Finally, according to the FDA: 40 Calories is low, 100 Calories is moderate and 400 Calories or more is high per serving. More info: FDA.gov
Lulu prides itself on its incredible pastry case, stand-alone coffee bar, and a menu that boasts unique combinations of fresh ingredients. Lulu’s motto, “without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible,” speaks to the restaurant’s focus on originality. My friend and I decided to split the “good thing bowl,” made up of brown rice, edamame, spinach, toasted sesame seeds and a carrot-ginger dressing, and the “Lulu veggie burger” that was topped with arugula and avocado and paired with crispy French fries. Ordering is easy at Lulu. All you have to do is snag a menu, browse the beverage island, place your order, and take your

The service was quick and friendly, and we thought the good thing bowl’s carrot-ginger dressing was flavorful in all the right ways. The Lulu veggie burger was satisfyingly rich, and the fries had a surprisingly peppery kick. For dessert, we hit the free frozen yogurt machine that offers dairy-free options made from fresh almond milk and coconut milk. Dessert was our favorite part of the meal, no doubt! And you thought these foods were healthy to eat
Fruit juice can be high in calories Just as it seems you found some tasty food that is good for you, along comes a report that says otherwise. This time is from the Nutritionists at musclefood.com. They claim that: Coconut oil is high in fat, fruit juice is high in calories, and even Sushi, while great on the protein front, can be high in sodium. Other foods that fail the diet test include: granola, frozen yogurt, and spreads. Even smoothies and trail mixes can be bad news on the health front unless you pick one low in sugar and calories. Musclefood’s Darren Beale suggests that when it comes to smoothies,“you should make your own, and when at your own favorite sushi bar, you should stick to ones with unrefined white rice.” Ultimately, all of these taken in moderation

are not fattening, but probably not helpful if you’re trying to eat really healthily. How vegetables are described effects how people choose them. Apparently, most consumers in restaurants and supermarkets perceive healthy foods as less tasty. Researchers at JAMA decided to test whether labelling and describing vegetables with “flavorful, exciting and indulgent descriptions typically reserved for less healthy foods could increase vegetable consumption.” They deliberately labelled healthy vegetables in glowing terms and found 25% more diners selected that vegetable. For example, green beans were listed as “green beans” (basic), “light ‘n’ lowcarb green beans and shallots” (healthyrestrictive), “healthy energy-boosting green beans and shallots” (healthypositive) and “sweet sizzlin’ green beans and crispy shallots” (indulgent). They go on to say: “labelling vegetables with ‘indulgent descriptors’ significantly increases the number of people choosing vegetables, despite no change in their preparation.” They add: “this novel, lowcost intervention could easily be implemented in cafeterias, restaurants and consumer products to increase selection of healthier options.”
I can never seem to get money things right with my spouse — what can I do? Q: I am married to someone who is really worked up about money. There are times he will check to see what I paid for something and compare them to the weekly ads to see if I got the best price. He wants me to go to two different stores to shop (even though I work full time and have twin daughters). Is this normal — or am I just sensitive? I don’t want to divorce.
A:
Money and marriage is an age old problem. I have worked with hundreds of couples and have seen firsthand how money problems, worries and other financial issues can lead to unhappy marriages. If left unchecked, financial problems can ultimately destroy a marriage. According to one source, when a spouse feels the other spends their money foolishly, it increases the likelihood of divorce by 45%. What caught my attention in the report was the word “feeling.” The researchers tell us that perceptions of how well one’s spouse handles money play a role in shaping the quality and stability of family life in the U.S.
Food Manufacturers, same product, different description? Food manufacturers are adapting to the way women view their health and wellness. In the US, women spend more than $125 billion a year on nutrition and $40 billion a year on alternative therapy. The food manufacturers have recognized the change in women’s attitudes towards their health and are changing some of the most basic foodstuffs to reflect these interests. For decades, Kellogg’s positioned Special K cereal as a way to help ‘curb calories.’ They now have repositioned it as a food that ‘encourages empowerment and an active lifestyle.’ In another example, Nessta Life producers of nutrition bars and cookies now promote their products as having vitamins and minerals ‘needed for each life stage of womanhood,’ while Luna bars, which are marketed directly to women,
offer the promise of assisting women ‘to obtain more of the nutrients lacking in their current diets.’ Even the popular Matcha Tea and powders that are wellknown for antioxidants are now being put into snack bars produced by the likes of Pamela’s products. When it comes to food and beverages, Julio Lopez, nutrition research and innovation manager at Archer Daniels Midland Co. (www.adm.com) in Chicago notes, “women now favor clean, clear and transparent labels and ingredients of natural origin. Some of the most popular ingredients in the women’s health space are calcium, plant-based proteins, vitamin D, folic acid, fiber, DHA, plant sterols and plant-based extracts with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” he says.
So, obviously your husband wants a “good deal” and to make sure that he has got the best price for something. For you, the time spent looking for the best “deal” is not as important because you clearly have limited time and energy. Get to the same place on what you value and that will help inform what is “important” to your marriage. Often there is something bigger going on—is the money saved intended to go toward another greater goal? 9
Money styles are also something to consider. It is common to see financial opposites attract one another. For example, one couple I worked with set up a plan that pulled for each of their strengths. She loves her husband’s fun and adventure, but doesn’t like that he spends all their paycheck doing so. He loves her stability and discipline since it balances his free and relaxed nature but he is always asking her for money and wanting to tap into her savings. There is tension and resentment on each side. We came up with a plan that pulls for their strengths—the spender spends, the saver saves. Since finances are the biggest cause of stress and stress is a major cause of disease, improving financial literacy also has the added benefit of improving your health. Keeping your values in the right place and improving finances can actually bring health, wealth and happiness. What more can you ask for? How much money does it take to make you happy?
Nutrition for a Healthy Life
Eat the Rainbow
By Karina Hammer, Certified Holistic Wellness Coach
Here’s an interesting way to vary your diet.
How much money makes you feel good about life?
According to another pointless, but interesting, Gallup/Time survey, it all depends in what part of the US you live. The survey asked 350,000 Americans how their income affected their daily emotions. In the Atlanta area, it came in at a fairly modest $42,000 a year, but at the other end of the scale people needed roughly a $105,000 a year to be happy if they lived in Seattle, New York or Philadelphia.
Enjoy a rainbow of colors in your diet
Regionally, the area including Tennessee, ‘positive daily emotions’ reach their peak at an income of around $75,000 a year. This compares with the US household median income of $54,000. The most expensive areas were the West Coast and the mid-Atlantic where you needed an income in excess of $105,000 a year to start feeling good about life.
Do you feel stuck in a rut? Are you always eating the same things every day? Eating a variety of food is an important factor in creating a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that increasing the assortment of fresh, whole foods helps to round out nutrition and ensure that you get a balance of important vitamins and minerals. Maybe you have heard that you should “eat the rainbow.” So, focus on eating at least one food from each color of the rainbow every day. Examples of foods from the rainbow: Red – apples, berries, red peppers, strawberries, raspberries Orange – sweet potatoes, carrots, oranges Yellow – squash, celery, bananas, pineapple Green – cucumbers, kale, spinach, kiwi Blue – blueberries Purple – berries, eggplant By enjoying a rainbow of colors in your diet, you are accomplishing something very important: You are eating an antioxidant rich diet. Antioxidants are natural substances that exist as vitamins, minerals and other

compounds in foods. They are believed to prevent disease and aging by fighting free radicals in the body. What are free radicals? They form when the body undergoes stress; stress from unhealthy foods, heavy metals, alcohol, toxins in the environment like cigarette smoke, flame retardants and pesticides, and even from aging and changes in hormones. By eating a colorful diet, you will be supplying your body with more power to fight off free radical damage, keeping it younger and healthier. If you’re finding it difficult to get started, try choosing one or two colors that are usually missing from the foods you eat. Focus on eating foods with these colors for the next two weeks, long enough to create a new habit and notice any changes that you may feel. Orthopedic Therapy
Orthopedic Manual Therapy: how it can help in pain relief and rehabilitation Karen Griffin of STAR Physical Therapy, based in Nashville, explains the procedures and benefits of Orthopedic Manual Therapy.
O
rthopedic manual therapy has been commonly considered “hands on” assessment and treatment. It allows a trained clinician to assess and treat soft tissue and joint dysfunction. Soft tissue encompasses muscle, tendon, fascia, and nerves. Injuries may include adhesions resulting from direct or indirect trauma, musculotendinous strains, and ligamentous joint sprains. When soft tissue structures or joints are injured, the sequel is one of altered biomechanics, meaning that the joint does not move correctly or the tissue does not perform normally. Soft tissues normally slide over one another. Manual therapy helps to restore the position and gliding of adjacent tissues with effort of improving pliability of soft tissue and overall joint range of motion. Range of motion is that of active or physiological movements that an individual can perform by oneself (i.e. lifting arm overhead in shoulder flexion motion). However, passive or accessory movements (including gliding, sliding, translation and rotational type movements) cannot normally be performed by oneself but rather are performed by a clinician (i.e. glenohumeral inferior glide joint mobilization of the shoulder).
Another advantage of manual therapy is that of providing pain relief. Gentle progressive oscillatory passive movements can be used to decrease inflammation and relieve mechanical joint pain. Scientific factors and research help verify the situational change of soft tissue scarring and stimulation of joint mechanoreceptors that decrease pain and inhibit muscular spasm and tone. Scar tissue is weak tissue; therefore, if the healing tissue is not addressed, the injured area can become susceptible to reinjury (i.e. a mild hamstring strain that becomes a chronic hamstring problem with repeated tears to the muscle tissue). As with any musculotendinous strain, the goals are of improving tissue tension, texture, movement and function. Ultimately, the use of manual therapy helps to normalize tissue of an individual in preparation for returning to active exercise and effective passive stretching. A manual therapist or clinician utilizing manual therapy techniques will typically perform ones that are effective in their hands. Manual therapy techniques include gradual manual joint mobilization, positional soft tissue release techniques, soft tissue mobilization of various therapeutic emphasis, 13
myofascial techniques, trigger point techniques, assisted instrumentation with manual soft tissue mobilization, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques. “Hands on” facilitates an active rehabilitation, an effective recovery and a return to one’s desired vocation or advocation. Yes, manual therapy is appropriate for most orthopedic maladies, however it is contraindicated in situations of nonstable healing fracture or compromised bone strength, areas of any cancerous tumor, areas of infection or open wounds, and areas of segmental ligamentous instability or laxity. Manual therapy in combination with progressive functional exercise and activity are generally ideal components of a rehabilitative plan. Specifics and emphasis given is dependent on a patient’s presentation of symptoms and physical limitation. Manual assessment, treatment and reassessment guide the clinician to assist an individual’s return to optimal function. Karen Griffin, PT, ATC, Cert. MT level 4, Cert. DN has given years of “hands on” therapy in the university setting with sports teams at the University of Florida and Stanford University; with athletes in the ’88 Seoul, Korea, ’96 Atlanta, USA, and 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympic Games training and competition. She completed a year post-professional clinical fellowship in Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy in 1990 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She currently practices in association with a number of other certified manual therapists at STAR Physical Therapy. She continues to enjoy working with athletic and nonathletic patients at the Patterson Street location.

Prosthetic Rehabilitation
Living Strong after Auger Accident with Prosthetic Hand
The i-limb is an externally powered prosthesis often controlled by myoelectric signals, meaning it uses muscle signals in the patient’s residual limb to move the device. Electrodes are placed on the user’s bare skin above two preselected muscle sites. When a user contracts these muscles, the electrodes pick up subtle changes in the electrical patterns and send these signals to a microprocessor which instructs the i-limb to open and close.
i-limb: one of the newest, smartest bionic hands in the world By Teresa Caruso, CFOM
On November 3, 2010, Bobby Allison was sitting alone on the tractor digging post holes with his auger thinking about the recent 21st birthday celebration at the casino for his grandson, Mathew. The morning was brisk on the Southaven, MS farm so he was wearing an oversized long jacket with his flip phone in pocket. Seconds later Bobby’s right arm coat sleeve became entwined in the drilling machine and he was being flung around numerous times until all his clothes ripped off his body except for his underwear.
Improved Quality of Life Prosthetic technology, hard work and a positive attitude can give any amputee an improved quality of life. Bobby and Rita are enjoying 52 years of marriage and experiencing new adventures daily with Bobby sitting behind the wheel driving them to parts unknown. “The Lord has been good to me,” shares Bobby.
T
he spinning machinery captured and sheared Bobby’s right hand and part of his arm. Bobby remembers crying out “Lord help me!” In that moment, he was set free from the metal monster and was lying in a pool of blood with severe damage to both upper limbs. Unable to move, he saw the old flip phone from his coat pocket opened directly beside his head. Bobby opened his mouth and used his tongue to dial the house where Mathew was staying. The answering machine came on and he left a message. Still using his tongue, he called 911. Bobby was getting weak and losing blood trying to explain his location to the 911 operator when Mathew came running to his grandfather. Mathew gave directions for emergency personnel. He began taking off his own clothes to wrap Bobby’s severed body attempting to slow the bleeding. The ambulance arrived and transported Bobby to The Med in Memphis. Unfortunately, the right hand and part of his arm were gone. After 47 surgeries on the left hand and arm, Bobby has 3 working fingers. Four months of extensive rehab taught him how to walk again and use his upper remaining limbs after the injury. A supportive wife, Rita, 3 kids and 13 grandchildren offered encouragement, assistance and support during the healing process. “The Good Lord was with me,” says Bobby.

Chiropractic
The third category of adjustment utilizes instrumentation that may be either spring activated or electric powered and allow the doctor to perform a gentle correction. The adjusting tool produces a very quick, yet comfortable series of taps to the joint. This type of adjustment is generally referred to as Activator or Arthrostim, among others, and is safe for even the most fragile of patients. Chiropractors hold physician status for the simple reason that in their fouryear doctoral education after obtaining undergraduate degrees, they are well trained in differential diagnosis (the process of identifying the main tissue that is generating the symptom). Chiropractic physicians obtain a complete history, perform the appropriate examination and diagnostic imaging. By Tennessee law, they may order any test required to help determine your diagnosis including MRI, CT scans, diagnostic ultrasound, bone density testing, blood and fluid analysis or other lab work. Is your mid-back pain caused by an aggravated muscle and joint or is your lung the problem from a hidden clot? Chiropractic physicians will determine the cause of the problem and either treat appropriately or refer to a medical specialist. Chiropractic physicians may provide soft tissue treatments that include mobilization, myofascial trigger point therapy, active release technique (ART), stretches, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), laser therapy as well as dry needling. Bracing and taping treatments are used to help support the injured area. These therapies are aimed at speeding the healing process of muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. Exercise rehabilitation therapies are routinely prescribed to provide patients with injury specific exercises to increase flexibility and strength. Chiropractors are trained to provide nutritional and dietary counseling as well as help you focus on any physical behaviors, such as sleeping or desk ergonomic habits, that may be contributing to your injury or condition. While the chiropractic adjustment/spinal manipulation is a unique technique only chiropractic physicians can provide in Tennessee, chiropractic care is not just adjustments anymore. Chiropractic physicians offer highly-skilled hands on care as well as a variety of treatment options to help you feel better and reach your maximum health potential.
Chiropractic – A review of the different types of hands-on approach to whole-health From FOX NEWS and the FDA to Consumer Reports and recognition of pro-sports chiropractors, like those of the NFL teams in Super Bowl LI, it is easy to see why more than 35 million Americans (adults and children) receive chiropractic care every year.
C
hiropractic physicians practice a whole-person approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. The centerpiece of chiropractic is the adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, which improves the motion of joints and structures to alleviate pain and optimize function. Chiropractors are trained in multiple techniques to perform spinal correction and meet the specific needs of each patient. Virtually all chiropractic adjusting techniques utilize two factors, speed (velocity) and pressure (torque). These techniques can be divided into three categories. The first includes manual methods that are accomplished by the doctor using their hands. The injured joint is placed at the end point of its range of motion and a quick precise pressure is applied often creating a ‘click’ or ‘pop.’ Some patients think this is a goal of the adjustment, but it is simply a by-product of the joint being shifted and a gas bubble is thought to be released. Diversified, Gonstead, Logan, and Palmer techniques are common examples of this type of adjustment. A second category may use mechanical tables to accomplish the adjustment to help insure the correction is made as comfortably as possible. Some machine assisted techniques go by the names Distraction, Drop and Thompson.

Brain Health
Stereotactic radiosurgery Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a treatment for cancerous or non-cancerous tumors, where focused radiation is selectively delivered into the affected tissue. The technique uses multiple intersecting beams or arcs to deliver high doses of radiation to the tumor, sparing the normal tissue. Though at first glance it appears to be a surgery, it is actually an alternative treatment to surgery. Chris Taleghani, M.D., pictured left, explains.
tumor growths that are close to vital organs are also excellent candidates for this procedure as invasive surgery could lead to further complications. Typically those that receive Stereotactic Radiosurgery experience less negative side effects than those who undergo typical full body radiation treatments. However, this procedure is not always recommended as a first line of defense in many cases, or if the growth of tumors is not contained in a central area. Stereotactic Radiosurgery can be used as a follow up procedure instead of traditional radiation. Depending on the tumors, results can be seen within months of beginning treatment.
Is this treatment only for brain tumors? Currently this form of treatment is being performed mainly on growths within the brain and limited location in the spine. It can be more difficult to immobilize other areas of the body because of the required precision and accuracy of this procedure. There is still a vast amount of potential that lies within the Stereotactic Radiosurgery technology to effectively treat tumors in other areas of the body.
What training is required for Neurosurgeons? Neurosurgeons play a crucial role in the planning and administration of these treatments. They require extra knowledge and technology training to perform their duties accurately. I have been trained on multiple radiosurgery systems dating back to Gamma Knife training for over 15 years. Here in Nashville, we offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery using a robotic laser guided stereotactic system. This allows treatment to a wider variety of tumor locations and sites than the Gamma Knife.
What is it? How does it work? Exactly like traditional radiation treatments, this non-invasive treatment is used to stop the DNA growth of tumor cells. The use of each beam is dependent on the amount of radiation needed and the location of the affected area. The most common and widely used beam generator is the Gamma Knife. This technology has been in use for over forty years and is used on smaller tumors within the brain. The Gamma Knife itself is a fixed instrument, which allows for precise placement in such a small area. It is crucial during this procedure that the individual remain perfectly still. The patient wears a head frame or halo during the procedure in order
to stabilize the head and spine. Individuals remain awake during the treatment but may be relaxed with the use of medicine administered through an IV. Doctors can talk their patients through the entire treatment and it is virtually painless. The number of treatments an individual receives is dependent on the size of the growth.
What are the benefits? As opposed to general radiation therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery only targets the cells of the tumor itself and leaves the healthy tissue that surrounds it virtually unharmed. This technology allows tumors that are in inoperable locations of the body to be reached by treatments. For example, 19

Pet Health
If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves, and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly.” Taking a dog’s temperature will quickly tell you if there is a serious problem. Dogs’ temperatures should not be allowed to get over 104 degrees. If your dog’s temperature does, follow the instructions below for treating heat stroke.
Limit exercise on hot days Take care when exercising your pet. Adjust intensity and duration of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears that are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, which typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.
Don’t rely on a fan The perfect way to keep your pet cool!
Keep your Pets safe in the Summer Heat The summer months can be uncomfortable—even dangerous—for pets and people. It’s difficult enough simply to cope with rising temperatures, let alone thick humidity, but things really get tough in areas that are hit with the double blow of intense heat and storm-caused power outages. The American Humane Society offers this advice.

inside a hot car by taking action or calling for help. Local law enforcement can follow this handy guide for how to proceed.
Never leave your pets in a parked car
“It’s important to remember that it’s not just the ambient temperature but also the humidity that can affect your pet,” says Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.” Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body.

Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet. And fans don’t cool off pets as effectively as they do people.
Provide ample shade and water Any time your pet is outside, make sure he or she has protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don’t obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.
Cool your pet inside and out Whip up a batch of quick and easy DIY peanut butter popsicles for dogs. (You can use peanut butter or another favorite food.) And always provide water, whether your pets are inside or out with you. Keep your pet from overheating indoors or out with a cooling body wrap, vest, or mat (such as the Keep Cool Mat). Soak these products in cool water, and they’ll stay cool (but usually dry) for up to three days. If your dog doesn’t find baths stressful, see if she enjoys a cooling soak.
Pet Health
Watch for signs of heatstroke Extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke. Some signs of heatstroke are heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness.
How to treat a pet suffering from heatstroke Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to her head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over her. Let her drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take her directly to a veterinarian.
Prepare for power outages Before a summer storm takes out the power in your home, create a disaster plan to keep your pets safe from heat stroke and other temperaturerelated trouble.
Some natural ways to keep your pet fit and healthy in Summer. By Sheila McGinnis
First of all, let’s start with the simplest way to keep dogs healthy during the summer time heat. Did you know that cat’s and dog’s body temperature is higher than humans? They run a few degrees higher than our normal 98.6. They can get heat strokes just like us if their temperature goes above 104 degrees. How to prevent? Simple: do not let them stay outside on very hot days for long periods, make sure they have access to shade and of course water. Also, I know Fido may love to ride with you, but this is where the majority of dogs suffer heat-related sickness and sadly death. It only takes 10 minutes for the inside of a parked car to climb from 85 degrees to above 102 degrees. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Another simple way to keep pets happy and healthy is to keep them clean. Simple I know, but a clean dog and cat cuts down the risk of skin infections and those pesky fleas. One question I get often is how to deal with fleas in a natural way. Let me give you some ways below and as always check with your veterinary before trying anything new. • Start at the source: yard, bedding, and carpet. The best method for this is called Diatomaceous earth (DE) which is made up of fossilized remains of shelled algae that’s been crumbled into a fine powder. It’s harmless to pets and humans but deadly to fleas. I sprinkle this in the yard where they generally like to go. I also sprinkle on their bedding and even on the carpet, allow to sit for about 30 min or so then vacuum it up. You can even put on both dog’s and cat’s fur; use food grade DE since they could lick it. • Another natural way is to spray your pet down with apple cider vinegar (ACV). If bathing your dog, you can even do the ACV as a rinse. You can also add 1 tsp. ACV to the water bowl. • Make a flea spray using essential oils (EO). Take a spray bottle and put in 1 cup of ACV, a quart of distilled water or good filtered water, 2 drops lavender and 1 drop of cedarwood (if using on both cats and dogs, just use 2-3 drops of either oil). Spray down the bedding and the pet. You can also use this mixture (add a drop or two of citronella EO) to soak a cloth collar and make your own flea collar. • Make a flea shampoo for dogs by adding 1-2 drops of citronella or lemongrass to their shampoo.

Physical effects Stress does more than just make for an unpleasant few hours; it can have long-lasting physiological effects that can be extremely detrimental. During periods of anxiety, stress or fear, a dog’s brain releases an increased amount of adrenaline and cortisol, which decreases the amount of blood flow to the frontal cortex of the brain. This means less oxygen is flowing to the frontal cortex. With prolonged anxiety or fear, the increase in cortisol levels can weaken the dog’s immune system, leading to increased incidence of sickness or stress. To avoid long-term health problems, it is important to be aware of the common signs and symptoms and to treat anxiety when it occurs in companion animals.
Solutions
How to improve your dog’s emotional life After all, we can’t ask our animals how they’re doing. Nonetheless, 75 million dogs in the U.S. experience anxiety, stress or fear at some point in their lives, and about 24 million of them regularly suffer from these potentially debilitating issues.
F
or millions of pet parents, their beloved dog is more than just a four-legged friend – he’s a member of the family. When looking at products for their pet, they are willing to explore all options to ensure they provide the very best items like organic foods, therapeutic bedding, unique and innovative toys, on-trend collars and leashes, electronic feeding and watering items and more. Although our pets are treated as family members, there is one issue that is often overlooked and undertreated in dogs – anxiety.
In some instances, it’s genetics. But for many dogs, anxiety often arises as a result of a change in routine such as a thunderstorm, fireworks, encounters with strangers, travel and other loud noises. Any of these can trigger an anxiety event. Dogs show signs of anxiety or fear in many different ways. Sudden barking, hiding, inappropriate urination, digging, chewing, panting and excessive lip licking are the most common signs of emotional stress. While it may be challenging to identify the triggers, it’s important to understand the science of anxiety in order to best alleviate it. 22
Some drugs, like sedatives, mood modifiers and anxiety medications have been recommended in extreme cases, but the results have been mixed. Wishing to avoid pharmaceuticals, some owners opt for more natural solutions containing chamomile, passion flower, valerian root, poppy or hops. One of the most effective treatments doesn’t involve drugs at all, but rather, focuses on behavior modification to soothe dogs and calm their senses. At the forefront of this innovative approach is the new Calmz® Anxiety Relief System for dogs that combines high-tech innovation with acupressure in a revolutionary non-invasive, drug-free treatment that soothes anxiety. The innovative system comes complete with an adjustable Comfort Fit Vest that cradles a device over specific acupressure points on the dog’s spine. When the device is activated, the clinically proven NeuroSync Technology® takes over. The dog will hear and feel a therapeutic blend of classical music, tones and vibration. This cuts to the physiological root of the stress, reducing adrenaline and increasing blood flow to key areas of the brain. Because anxiety, stress and fear are so common in dogs and can cause so much harm, it’s important to visit a veterinarian or a pet behaviorist to rule out any underlying medical conditions and to utilize the experts to help create a plan to treat the issue at hand. Anxiety is a serious disorder and it is best to get it under control early on. Treatment will improve quality of life for not only the dog but for the pet parent as well. Courtesy: BPT

Children’s Mental Health
This amazingly successful therapy is available at Harmonized Brain Centers. Here we combine LENS with Life Coaching, introducing skills and habit changes to go along with the more efficient brain activity. This integrative approach sets your child up for success in a natural and effective way. LENS is not only used for treating ADD/ADHD but also for people suffering with migraines, TBI, anxiety, depression, brain fog, chemo fog and memory issues. The brain is an amazing organ with the ability to change to become more efficient and effective with just a little help. Here is a testimony of a very happy family of a child with ADHD who came to see us at Harmonized Brain Centers:
New in Nashville, LENS Neurofeedback has a 90+% success rate with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression. Two short articles look at a therapy now available in Nashville that has had excellent results with improving children’s mental problems, and how to spot whether your child has some kind of mental illness.
W
ith the latest figures showing that 14% of children ages 4 to 17 nationwide and over 16% here in Tennessee are diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD, parents are scrambling for information and resources to help their child. Many struggle with having to medicate their children with stimulants which helps the ADD/ADHD symptoms but can cause other more harmful and long lasting side effects. There is a safe, quick and easy alternative. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) can be as effective as medication without the harmful side effects. ADD/ADHD is generally associated with the inability to focus at school; not being able to sit still and to pay attention. Often these children are reprimanded for their behavior; not being able to sit in their seats, fidgeting when they are supposed to be still; causing disruptions at inappropriate times. These children tend to struggle with their grades because they are unable to focus on what the teacher is saying and are often labeled with a learning disability when in fact they are often times quite bright; they just can’t focus in the traditional setting. Kids with ADD/ADHD are often ostracized from their peers as they are labeled the “bad kids.” They can be loud and disorganized; they often interrupt when others are talking. Sometimes
they seem to not care that they are so disruptive. They may not be invited to parties and play dates because of their behavior. No matter how hard they try; they just can’t seem to be able to do what is expected of them. Not only does this affect their educational needs but it also affects their self-confidence; they often feel like they don’t measure up and will never be as successful as the other kids. This lack of confidence causes long term effects as their selfimage diminishes, they often quit trying and just resign themselves to thinking they’ll never be able to measure up so it’s not worth the effort. For the last 35 years, there has been a new nonmedicated, non-invasive option for not only treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, but also in changing the brain so that the client can focus better, interact better and make better choices. Called Low Energy Neurofeedback, it has been in continual development since 1990. With a success rate of over 90%, it uses a small radio frequency to disrupt the brain waves and allows them to reset back into a more effective, natural pattern. Over a period of just a few sessions, clients start to feel more focused, calmer and more able to make better decisions. Sessions only take a few minutes a week and results are long lasting. 24
I brought my 14 year old grandson to Harmonized Brain Centers after trying 3 different medications for his ADD. They all caused side effects and changed his personality so that not only were we dealing with his lack of attention and focus but were also seeing anger issues, weight loss and he couldn’t fall asleep at night. He was able to stay focused better at school but was still unmotivated and we weren’t seeing many good changes. We were desperate for another alternative and after spending lots of time and research, we decided to call HBC. Our experience there was nothing short of a miracle. We started right after the first grading period was over. He had 2 C’s, 3 D’s and 2 F’s. He had pretty much given up on even trying and his attitude was awful. After just 2 sessions we noticed he was calmer and nicer at home to his brothers and didn’t seem to fight going to school so much anymore. He was more motivated to do things around the house when asked and started doing much better in basketball. We were anxious to see how his grades would be and were thrilled when the second grading period ended with an A, 4 B’s and 2C’s! His confidence was back, his attitude changed and the whole family dynamics changed with him. We couldn’t be more thrilled or satisfied with Harmonized Brain Centers. I would recommend Harmonized Brain Centers to anyone looking for help with ADD. We are so glad we found them. For more information, please call Harmonized Brain Centers of Tennessee at (615) 331-8762. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to discuss an option that you might not have known even existed. Our goal is for your child to be the best they can be; we would love to help!
Children’s Mental Health
The warning signs something could be wrong Of the 74.5 million children in the United States, an estimated 17.1 million have or have had a mental health disorder — more than the number of children with cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Half of all mental illness occurs before the age of 14, and 75 percent by the age of 24. A group of mental health experts from around the country, alarmed at the number of children struggling with undiagnosed psychiatric disorders, has formulated a list of 11 simple signs that a child might have a mental illness. The goal is to make it easier for parents, teachers, pediatricians, and others who work with children to know when they should take steps to get care for a child or adolescent. The list aims to help separate warning signs of illness from typical moodiness and occasional disruptive behavior like defiance, aggression, and impulsivity. The warning signs for psychiatric illness are often differentiated from behavior that’s not problematic by how long the behavior lasts, whether it impacts a child’s functioning, or whether it affects other people. The group, led by Mayo Clinic psychiatrist Peter Jensen, interviewed some 6,000 families to hone the language that would be most helpful to parents. The list was tested against children with diagnosed psychiatric disorders, to see if it would have predicted their conditions. Two federal agencies, Center for Mental Health Services and National Institute of Mental Health, funded the project. Dr. Jensen is the president of the Resource for Advancing Children’s Health, the group that undertook the project.
Here are the 11 warning signs parents should watch for: • Feeling very sad or withdrawn for two or more weeks • Seriously trying to harm or kill oneself, or making plans to do so • Sudden overwhelming fear for no reason, sometimes with a racing heart or fast breathing • Involved in multiple fights, using a weapon, or wanting badly to hurt others • Severe, out-of-control behavior that can hurt himself or others • Not eating, throwing up or using laxatives to make herself lose weight • Intensive worries or fears that get in the way of daily activities • Extreme difficulty in concentrating or staying still that puts her in physical danger or causes school failure • Repeated use of drugs or alcohol • Severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships • Drastic changes in her behavior or personality Courtesy, childmind.org

Healthy Eating for Children
Healthy Food for your Kid’s Lunch or Picnic Box Your kids are one of the brightest spots in your life, so they deserve the best of the best, don’t they? And that includes nutrition. Finding the correct balance of all the food groups is tricky for any age, but especially for the youngsters. Rachel Kirsch, pictured, comes up with some suggestions. Another fun add-in for the kids would a “mystery food” once a week. It could encourage them to try new foods, Dr. Marshall explained. While the food itself is the most important aspect of the lunch-making process, the quality of the food is also important. “Food safety is important when packing lunches. To keep lunch items cold, include a small frozen gel pack or frozen juice box. Insulated, soft-sided lunch boxes or bags are best for keeping food cold. Use an insulated container to keep food like soup hot,” said Dr. Marshall. Hunt also added that bagged frozen fruit can provide variety in winter and double as an ice pack in the lunch box. Dr. Jay Ruark, a dentist of Embassy Dental, had a few thoughts about lunches being brought from home. “I think that if parents are properly educated in what foods, drinks, and snacks are healthy alternatives to what the normal school lunches provide, I feel that lunches from home are MUCH better than what most schools provide.” The process of lunch-making can be a bit strenuous, but more rewarding in the end for your children. Dietician Nancy Hunt offered some specific healthy options for kids’ lunches. “I recommend fruit, and a few vegetables that don’t have to be cooked. Whole grain crackers and chips, or popcorn are all good options for carbohydrates with a crunch, and water or milk to drink is always a good option.” An aspect of children’s health that sometimes can be overlooked is their oral health. Dietician Nancy Hunt encourages the classic water for lunch. “Water still wins the penny-pincher war, and there are lots of flavorings that kids can squirt into the water to mix things up from day to day; most Americans don’t drink enough water, so why not start the habit early?” Dr. Ruark agrees with Hunt, and strongly discourages soda as a beverage. “Sodas in general are not good for your teeth. However, sodas and energy drinks with sugar are extra detrimental to your teeth due to the combination of acid and sugar that they contain. The acid can breakdown the enamel and the sugar is the “root of all evil” in the development of decay.” Encourage strong, healthy nutrition habits when kids are young by preparing healthy and delicious lunches with your kids now. The more involved the kids are, the more likely they’ll enjoy their lunches. Help make your day brighter, and your kid’s day brighter, by preparing the best lunches you can.
I
t can be difficult, but accepting defeat and just packing your child a Lunchable doesn’t have to be the answer. Nancy Hunt, a Registered Dietician and professor at Lipscomb University, says that some of the pre-boxed lunch options have as much fat and sodium in them as fast food meals. “I see the large cupcakes brought in often as a birthday choice with inches of icing on top. Some will come in with pop tarts or a honey bun, which I feel is quite a large serving for a 4-6 year old,” said Lipscomb Academy Preschool teacher Kelly Austin. In regards to lunches being brought from home, Hunt gave some insightful advice. “Variety is the spice of life! Put as much color in the lunchbox as you can (real color, not food coloring!). For example, right now the berries are coming into season, so get some local strawberries or blueberries to toss into the lunch box,” Hunt says. Dr. Autumn Marshall, another Registered Dietician and professor at Lipscomb University, agreed with Hunt. “Choose fresh vegetables and fruits that are in season. Fruit cups packed in 100% juice. Buy vegetables and fruits in their simplest form. Pre-cut, pre-washed, ready-to-eat are convenient but often cost much more.” Another great tip from Hunt was the involvement of the kids in the lunch making. “Get the kids involved in the planning by letting them cook or taste what’s going into the lunch box; the more invested they are in the process, the more likely they will eat their lunches instead of trading them for junk!” said Hunt. The adult should still have the final say over the food choices, but some input from the kids could be fun.

Healthy Eating for Children
Some tasty lunches for School, picnics, anytime
More advice from Nutritionists: Dr. Autumn Marshall, Lipscomb University • Include protein foods such as yogurt, cheese, nuts, turkey, tuna, and peanut butter. Whole grain breads, cereals, crackers, and popcorn. Fresh fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, grapes, carrots, and broccoli are great choices. Healthy beverages are also important such as low fat or fat-free milk, 100% fruit juice or water. • Prepare lunches the night before to save time. • Food safety is important when packing lunches. To keep lunch items cold, include a small frozen gel pack or frozen juice box. Insulated, soft-sided lunch boxes or bags are best for keeping food cold. Use an insulated container to keep food like soup hot.
Pretzel Kabobs Ham, turkey, and cheese rolled up together, sliced, and skewered with pretzel sticks 1/2 cup mandarin oranges 1/2 cup shelled edamame 1 container (4 ounces) fat-free chocolate pudding
Whole New PB&J Peanut butter and jelly on a whole wheat mini bagel 3/4 cup cherry tomatoes with 2 tablespoons low-fat Caesar dressing 1/2 cup pineapple chunks 4 mini oatmeal cookies
Nancy Hunt, Lipscomb University • Sandwiches and wraps are still some of the easiest ways to pack a lot of nutrition into a small space. Whole grain crackers and chips, or popcorn are all good options for carbohydrates with a crunch, and water or milk to drink is always a good option. • Peanut butter is still one of my all-time favorites. Hard boiled eggs are an excellent source of protein for growing kids, and are one of the least expensive sources of protein you can find. I’ve even seen containers of olives specifically for lunches and snacks (which is GREAT!)
Pizza Party 1 slice leftover cold veggie pizza cut into squares 3/4 cup cucumber moons with 2 tablespoons hummus 1/2 cup purple grapes 1/2 cup popcorn
The Dentist’s advice, from Dr. Jay Ruark Embassy Dental, Hillsboro Village What are some of the worst sugary foods for your teeth? If I had to pick some of the worst sugary foods, I would have to go with really hard, high-sugar candy, or really sticky, high-sugar candy. The problem with the sticky candy is that obviously it can stick to your teeth exposing them to the sugar for a longer period of time, therefore making the teeth more susceptible to formation of cavity.
Finger Food String cheese and a handful of whole wheat crackers 1 cup broccoli and cauliflower florets with 2 tablespoons light raspberry dressing 1/2 cup blueberries Slice of banana bread
The School Teacher’s viewpoint, Kelly Austin What healthy food do you see brought in lunches?
All Dressed Up
Many of the children have fruits and vegetables in their lunches. I see students dipping raw veggies or crackers in hummus, using peanut butter and/or Nutella as a “dip” for veggies and/or fruit. Many students have a sandwich of some type, but also will have cheese slices or a ham or turkey roll-up.
1 cup bow-tie pasta salad with veggies 1 cup baby greens salad with 2 tablespoons low-fat dressing 3/4 cup watermelon 2 fig cookies
Do you have an opinion on whether students should bring lunches from home or eat a school lunch? In our school, I trust the parent to prepare healthy options for their child. They are aware of their likes/dislikes and allergy restrictions.

Mobile Addiction
How to Deal with Mobile Addiction Ping! Ping! Ping! Whether it’s WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram or whatever, are you constantly distracted by your mobile? Sadhguru addresses those who are glued to their phones – what was a convenience has been turned into a problem. Even if you switch off, the world will go on just fine. Sadhguru: The mobile phone is for your convenience. The purpose of empowering ourselves technologically is to make our activities easier and to enhance our lives. If you get your work done more quickly, you should have more time to meditate. You may remember how tedious it used to be just a couple of decades ago in India to make a long-distance phone call. In the nineties, when we were building Isha Foundation from the fundamentals, I was constantly on the highway, driving from town to town. About once a week, I needed to make around fifty to one hundred calls all over the country and abroad. When I decided “today is my call day,” I would stop in a smaller town or village at one of these blue booths with “STD” written on them in big, bold letters. First, I would give the owner of the place a few thousand rupees. Then I would start making my calls. By the time I was done with all these calls, my fingers would hurt from dialing, and the fact that the black phone stank and I had to be in this horrible booth was not pleasant either. Today, I do not even have to dial manually – if I say a name, the phone will make the call for me.
Complaining About Convenience Instead of enjoying such convenience, you are complaining about it. It becomes an issue because if you start doing something, you do not know when to stop – even with the simplest things. If you start eating, you do not know when to stop. The problem is not the conveniences we have – the problem is lack of consciousness. Things that should be a solution to enhance our lives and
make them easy, we are turning them into a problem, out of ignorance. Is it possible to sit still today with WhatsApp constantly pinging? Yes – you can switch off the phone. The world will go on just fine without your interference. You will realize this if you switch off your phone now. If you realize it now, you will do many things more sensibly. If you do not mess with the world too much, people will be happy with you now. If you mess with it too much, then people will be happy when you are dead. It is your choice. 30
The choice is yours – either you wait for people to rejoice when you die, or you spread joy now. Sleep Apnea
Take an 8 Question Sleep Apnea Self-Test By Ryan O’Neill, D.M.D.
Screening for sleep apnea should be a point of emphasis at your dental and medical appointments. Sleep apnea can lead to the development of other serious medical conditions including Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Acid Reflux, ADHD and weight gain. According to Ryan O’Neill, D.M.D., pictured, effective treatment of sleep apnea results in fewer hospital visits from these related diseases. This 8 Question Self-Test will help determine your risk for sleep apnea. 1. Frequent snoring?
Does your bed partner tell you that you snore? Snoring is caused by a decreased flow of air, which creates increased vibration of the airway tissue, and ultimately results in snoring.
8. Male?
An estimated 42 million Americans (15% of the U.S. population) suffer from sleep-disordered breathing with men having more than twice the risk than women.
4. High blood pressure?
Have you ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension)? If you stop breathing while you sleep, your heart will receive insufficient amounts of oxygen, causing your blood pressure to increase while sleeping.
5. Overweight?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) helps determine normal weight based upon age and height. Patients who have a high BMI are overweight and typically have a larger than normal tongue, which can prevent sufficient air from flowing during sleep.
Fig. 1.2 An oral appliance can be made by a dentist to treat snoring and sleep apnea. These appliances prevent the tongue from falling back during sleep—keeping the airway open and allowing adequate airflow.
6. Over 50 years old?
If you said yes to >3 questions…
Anyone over the age of 50 years old has a higher risk of suffering from sleep apnea. Mortality rates for males are highest in the 50 to 55 year old population.
Fig. 1.1 3D imaging can help screen for airway constrictions that contribute to snoring and sleep apnea. These narrow portions of the airway become narrower during sleep due to relaxed muscle tone in the airway. Sleep Nashville has 3D imaging equipment on site that is used during all sleep consultations.
7. Large neck?
This question takes into account the size of the neck measured around the Adam’s apple. For males, a large neck is considered 17 inches or greater, and for females, 16 inches or greater.
If you answered yes to 3 or more of these questions, you are considered to be high-risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and should consult with a medical professional. Sleep Nashville offers free snoring and sleep apnea consultations. At the consultation, we will continue the screening process for sleep apnea as well as discuss testing and treatment options.
2. Excessively fatigued?
Do you feel excessively sleepy during the day? Excessive daytime sleepiness can include falling asleep while driving, talking to someone or even reading a book. A decrease in daytime fatigue can result in increased productivity and overall mood.
3. Gasping during sleep?
Do you ever wake up coughing, choking, or gasping for air? The effects of this on the body are similar to the act of drowning. The brain is telling the body to breath, but the body cannot because of an “obstruction,” such as the tongue or a constriction in the airway.

Music Therapy
20 ways music can improve your health By Scott Christ
Living in Nashville, you know all about music and how it makes you feel good. Well, there’s some scientific reasons as well. Read on to learn how listening to tunes can ramp up your health. Music can... 1. Ease pain. Music can meaningfully reduce the perceived intensity of pain, especially in geriatric care, intensive care, or palliative medicine (an area of healthcare that focuses on preventing and relieving the suffering of patients). 2. Motivate people to bike harder. A study of healthy male college students found that, while riding stationary bicycles, the participants worked harder while listening to fast music. Extra bonus: They also enjoyed the music more. 3. Improve running motivation and performance. Here’s an easy way to beat your best time if you’re a runner: Listen to your favorite “pump-up” music. Listening to music may help people run faster, boost their workout motivation, and enhance their endurance. 4. Increase workout endurance. Listening to those top workout tracks can boost physical performance and increase endurance during a tough exercise session. This works partly through the power of distraction: When we’re focusing on a favorite album, we may not notice that we just ran an extra mile. 5. Speed up post-workout recovery. One study found that listening to music after a workout can help the body recover faster. While slow music produced a greater relaxation effect post-exercise, it seems that any kind of music can help the physical recovery process. 6. Improve sleep quality. Listening to classical music has been shown to effectively treat insomnia in college students, making it a safe, cheap alternative to sleep-inducing meds.

7. Help people eat less. One study found that playing soft music (and dimming the lights) during a meal can help people slow down while eating and ultimately consume less food in one sitting (perhaps because slowing down helps them to be more mindful of fullness cues).
10. Induce a meditative state. Listening to slow musical beats can alter brainwave speed, creating brainwave activity similar to when a person is meditating or in a hypnotic state. Some research suggests that using rhythmic stimuli (such as music) to induce these states can have a therapeutic effect, easing symptoms of migraines, PMS, and even behavioral issues.
8. Enhance blood vessel function. Scientists have found that the emotions patients experience while listening to music have a healthy effect on blood vessel function. Music both made study participants feel happier and resulted in increased blood flow in their blood vessels.
11. Relieve symptoms of depression. When you’re feeling down in the dumps, music can help pick you up (much like exercise). Research suggests the kind of music matters: Classical and meditative sounds seem to be particularly uplifting, whereas heavy metal and techno can actually make depressive symptoms worse.
9. Reduce stress. Research has found that listening to music can relieve stress by triggering biochemical stress reducers (think of these physiological processes as anti-stress ninjas). 32
Anxiety? Depression? Migraines? ADHD?
12. Elevate mood. A 2013 study found that music helped put people in a better mood and get in touch with their feelings. Study participants rated “arousal and mood regulation” and “self-awareness” as the two most important benefits of listening to music.
We helped them with, we can help you...
13. Improve cognitive performance. Background music may enhance performance on cognitive tasks. One older study found that listening to music allowed test takers to complete more questions in the time allotted, and get more answers right. More recent research suggests that whether or not music improves cognitive function depends on whether the music first improves a person’s emotional state. 14. Help people perform better in high-pressure situations. Want to sink the game-winning shot when the pressure’s on? Listen to some upbeat tunes before the big game. One study found that basketball players prone to performing poorly under pressure during games were significantly better during high-pressure free-throw shooting if they first listened to catchy, upbeat music and lyrics. 15. Reduce anxiety as much as a massage. One study found that music’s effect on anxiety levels is similar to the effect of getting a massage. Here’s an idea: Treat yourself to a massage and bring your favorite chilled out tunes to play during the session. Double the relaxation!

16. Relax patients before surgery. One study found that listening to music helped put cardiovascular surgery patients at ease as they awaited their operations. That’s a major benefit for the nearly four million people who get heart surgery each year in the U.S.

17. Ease stress after surgery. Music isn’t only helpful pre-surgery. Another study revealed that listening to music while resting in bed after open heart surgery helped relax patients and decrease their stress levels. 18. Elevate mood while driving. Listening to music while driving can positively impact mood. So when you’re feeling cranky in the car, try cranking some of your favorite tunes. 19. Help cancer patients manage stress and anxiety. Music has been found to help cancer patients communicate their feelings, manage stress, and ease physical pain and discomfort. It can also reduce anxiety and improve their quality of life. 20. Ease recovery in stroke patients. Researchers in Finland concluded that when stroke patients listened to music for two hours a day, their verbal memory and attention improved and they had a more positive mood compared to patients who didn’t listen to music or who listened to audio books.

Dental Implants
Benefits of Dental Implants Choosing a tooth replacement method is a big decision. Your options will vary depending on the condition of your mouth, but you want to make a selection that will be comfortable and dependable. This will allow you to function with confidence while dealing with your tooth loss. Dr. Jaime A. Romero, Jr., D.D.S. explains further. • Better comfort. Dentures are designed to be removed for cleaning. This also means they can slip and irritate the mouth. Implants fuse to your jaw bone and become permanent, so there’s no discomfort. • Improved speech. Slipping or poor-fitting dentures can make it difficult to speak without mumbling or slurring. You don’t have either of those problems with dental implants. • Natural eating. Certain foods are difficult or even impossible to eat with dentures. Dental implants are so secure and comfortable that you can enjoy all your favorite foods. • More confidence. If you’re self-conscious about your smile, dental implants can give you a huge confidence boost. Imagine having a perfect smile in just a day.
F
or some people, it’s hard to come to terms with the idea of using tooth replacements. You should understand that you’re not alone. Millions of Americans deal with tooth loss every year. You should also know that tooth replacement methods are more advanced, successful, and realisticlooking than they’ve ever been before.
What are Dental Implants? Dental implants are small metal rods, usually made from titanium, that are designed to function as a base for replacement teeth. The implants are engineered to be highly durable and safe for use in your mouth. They’re embedded in the jaw during a surgical procedure, making them incredibly strong. Dental implants can be used for individual teeth as well as entire sets of anchored dentures. Because of the extremely low risk of complica-
tions from the metal itself, you can have several rods implanted easily wherever you need them, for a customized fit
Why Choose Dental Implants? There are many reasons why dental implants are such a good choice for many Americans. First and foremost, they are a flexible solution for people will all levels of dental problems. Other benefits of dental implants include: • Fast procedure. Most of us hate spending time in a dentist’s chair. Dental implants can be installed very quickly. In fact, you can get an entire new set of teeth in just one day. • Realistic appearance. Dental implants use specially designed prosthetic teeth that are just like the real thing. 34
• Higher durability. Dental implants are permanent. When taken care of, they last the rest of your life. If you’re ready to let dental implants change your life, give us a call. We’d love to give you your smile back.
Accidents, Injuries and The Law
Boating and Watercraft Accidents In the summertime, there are also a lot of boating accidents. Most responsible boat or personal watercraft owners have insurance coverage. Therefore, if you are injured in a boating accident or personal watercraft accident due to the negligence of another, you should contact a qualified personal injury attorney. At High Law Office, PLLC, we handle premise liability claims against owners or occupiers of premises who are negligent. We also handle boating accidents and personal watercraft (i.e., jet skis, waverunners, etc.) accidents. We have experience handling these claims. If you or a loved one suffered injuries due to the negligence of an owner or renter of the premises or due to the negligence of an owner or operator of a boat, personal watercraft, jet skis, waverunners or similar watercraft, we will investigate your claim at no cost to you.
“No Recovery, No Fee”
Summertime Accidents (What to do?) By David E. High, Attorney-At-Law
Unfortunately, there are a lot of accidents in the summertime when people are out participating in various outdoor activities. If you are injured due to the negligence of another person, you may have a claim that could be covered under insurance. Possible Insurance Coverage If you are injured on the premises of another due to the negligence of the owner, occupier or renter of the premises, or a dangerous condition on the premises, it is likely that your injury would be covered under their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. If they have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance and you were injured due to the negligence of the owner or occupier of
the premises, then their insurance carrier will be responsible. There also may be some medical payment coverage under the homeowner’s or renter’s insurance that will pay a certain amount of medical bills regardless of fault for injuries occurring on the premises. Therefore, if you are injured on the premises of another, due to their negligence, you should promptly contact an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation. 35
At High Law Office, PLLC, we have experience in prosecuting and handling these types of claims and would be happy to represent you under a contingent “No Recovery, No Fee” basis. The BIGGEST News in Laser Vision Surgery
“SMILE” Vision Surgery Debuted Statewide in Nashville New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE.
The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics).
“W
e are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang.
Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, 36

surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.
Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center. He is one of the few cataract and LASIK surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics.
One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Cafe, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville,” among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legally blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or
contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE! “I am so happy!!!,” exclaimed Margaret at her post-op visit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the VisuMax Femtosecond Laser for SMILE procedure for -1 to -8 D myopia with up to 0.5D astigmatism. During a SMILE procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the 37

Accept “differences” with a boundless love!!! A “beauty from ashes” story about Life… and Autism. I will never forget the early years when my son Luke was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. . . and the emotional rollercoaster that followed. Debbie Lee Imsande reflects back on one ordinary day. I was sitting with a close friend, and spiritual mentor, whom I call Sweet Mary, and out of all the ponderings of my heart, these words left my lips: “Will he Love? Will he know Jesus?” …it was through her, God spoke these words over my spirit: “How could he not?” Since that day, too many times, I have allowed people to bring darkness into my colorful soul. These piercing words, accusations made, and harmful actions were not so colorful. Thankfully what others meant for harm, God uses for good. (Genesis 50:50) Is autism a disorder, a disability, different ability... or is it a unique gift, or exceptionality? Although I am thankful that culture is trying to level the playing field for us, trying not to offend others, in our attempts to understand and advocate on his behalf, becomes quite exhausting. The “spectrum” of autism is vast. Raising awareness of and hoping to change how culture views people with autism is the truest intention of my heart. The desired response is simple: Accept ALL PEOPLE with LOVE. Celebrate the potential in everyone and the possibilities in every encounter! My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. James 2:1–12 (ESV) We must often go to the Holy Scriptures— inspired by God, living and active, and like human words, can offend—but TRUTH is TRUTH; we must live by it and let this penetrate our soul! We are ALL flawed and uniquely gifted. Every one of us! Let that free us to serve each other with a boundless love. . . “As I have loved you, love one another.” John 13:34
Confusion, conflict, chaos, lack of confidence in ourselves or Who God is, makes it easy to get caught up in our culture’s lies! Although Satan has schemes he desires to bring against us (Ephesians 6:11), we know God’s plans are Bigger (Jeremiah 29:11) and Victory has been won (Colossians 2:15). God has empowered us with His Holy Spirit and lavished us with His grace, strength, and mercy. God does bring beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3); all I need to do is trust Him and pray without ceasing-focused, powerful, and strategic prayer (James 5:16)! Countless hours are spent providing the intervention methods recommended by autism professionals so that Luke can have a visibly successful life. However, prayer is the most important work I can do for him, ever trusting the internal work of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16). I cannot think of a greater purpose than being a champion for others! Standing in the gap, getting in the trenches with them, and saying: your heart matters! So, let’s invest in God’s children. . . love them as they are and help them find their GOD-SIZED DREAM!
Luke is a teenager now. He is not afraid to pray. He prays often at school, youth group, and the family meal. Recently, Luke was praying over his lunch with his friend Cameron; he thanked God for his best friend. Cameron sweetly thanked Luke for praying. I was stopped in my tracks. He goes to God without fear! It doesn’t occur to him that someone might judge his prayer or question his heart. We cannot imagine the work God is doing in his spirit! Yes! HE LOVES! Yes, HE KNOWS JESUS! How could he not?! Thank you, God, for your boundless love, the saving work of Christ Jesus, and the glorious unfolding of becoming our true selves through the refining of the Holy Spirit! God will make “beauty out of ashes”— colorful light from darkest night — so all we need to do is look expectantly toward our future glory! Let’s create a culture of acceptance where we can learn and live with boundless opportunities in the truth of God’s Word. . . looking with new eyes to those who are different than ourselves, including those with autism. Live the resurrected life: dying to our false self, who we became through culture’s lies, and rise to the newness of life in Christ! “THERE COMES A TIME IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU NEED TO MAKE WHAT JESUS DID FOR YOU GREATER THAN WHAT SOMEONE DID TO YOU.” – Christine Caine
