What is ‘Functional Medicine’– and does it work?
PERSONAL ADVICE: ASK DR. LISA
As the ‘Functional Forum Roadshow’ comes to Nashville on August 6th (see www.eventbrite.com/e/august-2018functional-forum-nashville) H&W investigated this increasingly popular approach to wellness. According to the Institute for Functional Medicine: “Functional Medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual”. It goes on to explain: “The Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes”. Fancy sounding explanations but not one that’s found universal favor, or agreement. Go to science based medicine. org and you’ll find a different take: here author David Gorski gets into quite a (lengthy) lather about FM’s approach going so far as to describe it as ‘quackery’.
Staying connected despite life chaos L
et’s face it, life is crazy! And it takes a toll on our relationships. One of the challenges you might face is staying connected to your partner or spouse. But putting your intimate partner on the back burner can quickly build resentment or make cracks in the foundation of your relationship. To prevent this from happening it is important to make your relationship a priority despite all the challenges and stress the days throw at you. Although this may seem like common sense, to keep your relationship and partnership strong it is important to stay connected to each other. Here are a few ideas to help you stay connected to your intimate relationship :
Have Lunch Together
Lunch doesn’t have to come with a child’s toy. Spice up your marriage by meeting your partner for a private lunch date. Bring food from home and sit in the work conference room or in the park to save money. It doesn’t matter what you eat. It only matters that you’re spending quality time together.
Spend Time Together After the Kids Are in Bed
One last glass of water. Five more minutes in front of the television. We know the tactics children use to delay “lights out.” We used them plenty of times ourselves. It’s tempting to give in to prevent bedtime struggles but you and your spouse need time together just as much as your kids need sleep. Set a bedtime for your children. Stick to it. That way, you can “meet” for a secret rendezvous in the living room.
Take a Weekend Off
For some people, it’s hard to imagine being away from the kids for more than a few hours. Start with a weekend off from the kids to see what works for you. You may actually enjoy the alone time with your spouse even more than you did before you had children. You don’t have to leave the house for a weekend off. Make the kids leave instead. Send them to a friend or family member’s home for their own weekend getaway.
Say thank you
We all desire to feel appreciated, but often times we forget the power of the two simple words, “Thank you.” Look for the opportunities to say “Thank You,” to your spouse. Show your appreciation for little things like taking out the trash as well as the big things like going to work every day so that you can have a better life. Don’t let gratitude go unspoken. Make sure that your spouse knows that you appreciate all that they do. Say “Thank you,” and say it often. Your spouse will feel more connected to you when they feel appreciated by you.
Talk Every Day
He argues: “Basically, this is a manifesto for doing whatever the heck a physician wants in the name of “personalizing” care. Whenever I see such piece of utter nonsense used as a justification, I can’t help but point out that real doctors and scientists are trying very hard to figure out new clinical trial methodology in order to test precision medicine (which used to be called “personalized” medicine) in a scientifically rigorous manner.” He continues: In the early “wild west” days (which we are only now coming out of), a lot of physicians made it up as they go along with respect to interpreting the results of whole genome sequencing to select cancer treatment, but that is increasingly frowned upon. If scientists can put together a trial as clever and complex as the SHIVA trial, I laugh at Functional Medicine practitioners telling me that FM can’t be tested because it’s two “personalized.” It’s a lame excuse— the very lamest—and exactly the same excuse that homeopaths, acupuncturists, and the like make for not doing clinical trials testing their quackery”. (More info:sciencebasedmedicine.org) In the September issue of H&W we’ll be asking local FM Practitioners for their opinions
Can being Vegetarian make you live longer?
Daddy can tell the kids how his day was around the dinner table. He can also save some of the details so you can talk more when the two of you are alone. Read the newspaper. Laugh together. Watch funny videos. Say a lyric and see if your husband can guess the song title. Make a point every day to interact with each other, even if it’s to talk about your marriage. Talk, listen and make time for each other. Even with you both being dedicated to your children, your family’s happiness depends on the health of your marriage. It is easy to get disconnected from our spouses and intimate partners. So many things to do and so many places to be. Make your marriage and relationship a priority and stay connected. By making a conscious effort to stay connected, you are giving your relationship all of the nutrients it needs to be healthy and thrive.
Many claim that vegetarian diets are healthier than diets that rely heavily on meat. But new re-search may only be starting to learn just how much healthier they can be. According to an article in healthline.com it suggests that if we all ate a vegetarian diet, one-third of early deaths could be avoided. “We have just been doing some calculations looking at the question of how much could we reduce mortality [by] shifting toward a healthy, more plant-based diet — not necessarily totally vegan — and our estimates are [that] about one-third of early deaths could be prevented,” Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard Medical School, said during a medical conference in Vatican City late last month.
To help your marriage go from surviving to thriving contact Dr. Lisa Webb at Body & Mind Consulting at 615.310.1491. 8
“That’s not even talking about physical activity or not smoking, and that’s all deaths — not just cancer deaths,” he added. “That’s probably an underestimate, as well as that doesn’t take into account the fact that obesity is important and we control for obesity.” “I’m actually not surprised at all,” added Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, LD, a licensed, registered dietitian and wellness manager at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. “I think that when people hear ‘one in three deaths could be prevented,’ that it’s hard to believe the magnitude of this,” noted Ginger Hultin, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “But, in fact, there is good evidence on the health benefits of a vegetarian diet.” For the full story go to: www.healthline.com

Can eating meat contribute to Climate Change? If you’re serious about protecting the environment, the most important thing that you can do is stop eating meat, eggs, and dairy “products”, according to various new research findings. How so? This research from PETA.com claims feeding massive amounts of grain and water to farmed animals and then killing them and processing, transporting, and storing their flesh is extremely energy-intensive. And forests—which absorb greenhouse gases—are cut down in order to supply pastureland and grow crops for farmed animals. Finally, the animals themselves and all the manure that they produce release even more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. The billions of animals who are crammed onto U.S. factory farms each year produce enormous amounts of methane. Ruminants—such as cows, sheep, and goats—produce the gas

left with a lot of waste. This is a form of animal rearing that is very unnatural, and as such leaves a devastating environmental footprint. But when raised according to natural laws, Fairlie, a British farmer argues that it can be quite healthful, even necessary, for the planet. As Fairlie tells Time magazine, and explains in much greater detail in Meat, many of the statistics that make meat eating seem akin to using the Grand Canyon as a garbage dump do not reveal the whole picture. The UN’s widely quoted statistic that meat produces 18 percent of the world’s carbon emissions contains “basic mistakes,” according to Fairlie, including attributing all deforestation to cattle, rather than logging and development. It’s also widely stated that the ratio between plant foods used to produce meat is about 5 to 1.

ur digestive tracts are filled with countless bacteria, numbering more than there are brain cells in the brain. But what exactly do these bacteria accomplish? • Necessary for processing and metabolizing important vitamins and minerals: such as vitamins B9 (folate), B12, K; and calcium, magnesium, iron, and many other minerals. • Protecting the digestive system from infection and parasites. When foreign organisms invade, beneficial bacteria help prevent them from taking hold and causing sickness or illness. • Boosting immunity. Approximately 70-80% of your immune system is in your gut. Besides preventing infection in the digestive tract, probiotic bacteria have a positive connection to immunerelated disorders such as allergies (seasonal and food) and eczema. • Combating ulcer-causing bacteria. Similar to how they prevent bacteria and parasites, intestinal microflora can prevent ulcers through their protective abilities.
while they digest their food, and it’s also emitted from the acres of cesspools filled with the feces that pigs, cows, and other animals on these farms excrete. But in his book, Meat: A Benign Extravagance, Simon Fairlie claims that eating moderate amounts of meat could be greener than going vegan. Fairlie argues that every agricultural system produces hard-to-use biomass that is best fed to livestock, and that animals kept on small farms also fend off predators and pests and fertilize the soil. Jus two percent of U.S. livestock facilities produce 40 percent of farm animals, and when you raise thousands of animals in one small space, you’re
• Helping regulate digestive disorders, such as IBS, colitis, and Crohn’s.
However, Fairlie points out that this takes into account only feeding animals foods that humans eat, which is common practice in the United States. But if you feed livestock such as cattle their intended diets – grass, which people do not eat – the real ratio is 1.4 to 1 – much more sustainable. But there is a “catch” to Fairlie’s assertions that meat-eating is beneficial for the planet… we would need to switch over to organic farming, he says, as well as cut our meat consumption in half. In other words, in order for eating meat to become good for the environment, some major changes need to take place. More info: www.articles.mercola.com
• Supporting autoimmune disorders like celiac and pernicious anemia (vitamin B12 deficiency). • Ensuring proper thyroid function. The microbiome plays an important role in converting thyroid hormones into forms the body needs for adequate metabolism, thus playing an important part of the thyroid cycle. • By aiding with digestion, probiotic intake indirectly supports lowering high cholesterol and blood pressure, thus lowering chances of heart disease. 9
• Regulating appetite, mood, sleep, and relaxation. There are more neurotransmitters in your gut than in your brain. It is estimated that 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is made in the digestive tract. • Clearly, digestive health – particularly that of the microbiome – has a widespread influence on health everywhere in the body.

Complementary & Rebirthing (breathing) What it is: Rebirthing is a special type of conscious, controlled breathing technique which is thought to help cure certain conditions and effectively deal with traumatic, repressed childhood memories. Rebirthing sessions are usually conducted one-toone between the client and their practitioner, or as part of a workshop with multiple people in the room. Benefits: • Brings greater self-awareness • Treats anxiety and depression • Can help with relationship issues • Helps those who simply want to get more enjoyment out of life More information: www.rebirthingbreathwork.co.uk/brs_what
Reflexology Qigong
Radionics
What it is: Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is an ancient Chinese practice which involves using specific postures, movements, meditation and breathing practices in order to balance the body’s flow of energy and achieve higher states of consciousness and awareness. It is both similar and related to Tai Chi. Benefits: • Improves balance and coordination • Alleviates stress and anxiety • A great low-impact form of physical activity • Improves cardiovascular health • Speeds up recovery time from surgery and other medical procedures More information: nqa.org/about-nqa/what-is-qigong/
What it is: Radionics is a type of therapy in which specific diseases are detected and treated using waves of energy similar to radio waves. It is based around the principle that normal, healthy human bodies give off a certain frequency of energy frequencies, while those affected by certain diseases or health conditions will give off different energy frequencies. Treatment involves the rebalancing of these energy frequencies. Benefits: • Possible to detect illnesses and diseases at an early stage • Non-invasive More information: www.radionic.co.uk/
What it is: Reflexology is a type of therapy which involves applying pressure to certain areas of the foot and hands. It is based on the belief that certain regions of the foot and hands are directly connected by nerves to other areas and organs and muscles around of the body (such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes, or brain). Applying pressure to these areas helps to stimulate recovery and good health in its corresponding organ. Reflexology can be performed by a trained practitioner in a reflexology session, or special reflexology products (such as shoes, for example) can be purchased for everyday use. Benefits: • Stimulates nerve function • Relaxes and relieves stress • Relieves tired and tense feet and ankles • Eases anxiety and stress • Is beneficial for babies and small children as well More information: www.aor.org.uk/home/what-is-reflexology
Reiki What it is: Reiki is a traditional Japanese therapy which centers around the use and transfer of energy from the healer’s body to that of the subject in order to stimulate the body’s own natural healing processes, relieve stress, and generate overall feelings of relaxation and wellbeing. 10
Alternative Therapies: A-Z guide
Alternative Therapies Benefits: • Improves mental clarity and wellbeing • Helps to alleviate physical pain in the limbs, muscles or joints • Aids sleep and relaxation • Stimulates the immune system • Relieves pain from headaches and migraines • Reduces stress More information: www.reiki.org/faq/whatisreiki.html
Seitai Therapy What is is: Seitai therapy is a Japanese treatment which focuses on stimulating a series of “master” points around the body, in a specific sequence, in order to bring balance and alignment to all organs and areas of the body (the word “seitai” in Japanese translates to “to bring the body into order”). During a session, the seitai practitioner will stimulate these acupressure points with their thumbs, elbows and fingers.
Rolfing (Structural Integration) What it is: Rolfing is a form of physical manipulation therapy developed by biochemist Dr. Ida Rolf. It is based on the belief that all physical and emotional problems and discomfort stem from improper alignment of the body’s fascia (the connective tissue located just under the skin). By aligning them through a series of 10 sessions performed by a registered practitioner, subjects can achieve not only better posture, but greater overall wellbeing and health. Rolfing sessions incorporate fascial pressure, massage and gentle manipulation and realignment techniques. Benefits: • Helps with respiratory problems • Relieves stress • Stimulates the immune system • Alleviates back, neck and shoulder pain • Helps alleviate joint pain and inflammation • Improves posture More information: acuseitai.com/treatmentmodalities/seitai-shiatsu.html
Self-hypnosis
Benefits: • Better posture and freedom of movement, particularly in older subjects • Decreased muscle and joint pain • Greatly benefits athletes and dancers who rely on their bodies More information: www.rolfing.org/
What it is: Self-hypnosis is literally the process of hypnotizing yourself into a state of higher awareness to gain more control over your body and mind, as well as an increased sense of focus and mental clarity. It is closely related to autosuggestion, and requires you to remain highly focused on the process, and become completely relaxed in order to enter a self-hypnotized state. Usually, no special equipment or aids are required – a chair or a comfy place to sit or lie down is sufficient. 11
Benefits: • Helps you focus more clearly on your goals in life • Greater sense of wellbeing and mental focus More information: www.hypnosisandhealing.co.uk/ self-help-centre/how-to-use-self-hypnosis-to-achieveyour-goals/
Shiatsu What it is: Shiatsu is a type of physical therapy which uses massage to increase the function of the body’s immune system in order to bring about healing for a range of emotional and physical conditions. It focuses on discovering the energy imbalances in the body, and then manipulating certain points along the body’s meridians in order to bring balance back to the body. The Japanese word shiatsu translates to English as “finger pressure”, however in a particular session, the practitioner may perform light assisted stretches on the client, as well as joint rotation, and gentle shaking of the limbs. Benefits: • Encourages deep relaxation • Stimulates the immune system • Relieves stress • Is safe and beneficial for mothers both during and after pregnancy More information: www.shiatsusociety.org/
Siddha medicine What it is: Siddha medicine is a form of medicinal practice which originated in Southern India. Essential Oils
Oils to help with Bruising This month Sheila McGinnis (pictured) looks at how essential oils can help with the effects of bruises and trauma on the skin.
A
s a toddler, they are learning to walk which comes with lots of falls. As a child, they are becoming brave and are learning lots of things that generally requires lots of falls. When we get to our “elderly” years our skin gets thinner and loses fats and moisture and we lose our elasticity and we tend to bruise more easily. It can take up to two weeks for the body to reabsorb the blood; so what can we do? Well, most bruising is a normal part of life (please see a doctor if you are noticing more bruising that’s normal or becomes hot and very painful). Bruising happens when our capillaries are damaged by injury to tissues where the blood accumulates and seeps under the skin. At times, you will also feel pain and swelling. My first go to is something called Trauma Oil. This oil is made with infusing Arnica, Calendula, and
St. John’s Wort into olive, sunflower, grapeseed or jojoba oil (see recipe below). This oil is a must-have in your natural first-aid kit due to its incredible antiinflammatory and pain relieving properties. This on its own is wonderful for bruising as well as sprains and sciatica pain. But when you add essential oils to this you have a synergistic powerhouse of healing benefits. Essential oils that are beneficial in the healing of bruises are Lavender, Helichrysum, Frankincense, and Rosemary. You may hear of other essential oils that are beneficial, but these are my go to (see recipes below).
Trauma Oil
1. Equal amounts of dried Calendula, Arnica, and St. John’s Wort (**important for them to be dried so that mold or spoilage won’t happen) into a glass jar. 18
2. Pour desired oil over the dried herb/flowers to cover at least 1” above and leaving at least 1/2” of space. Stir or shake gently to incorporate the oil. Put into a sunny windowsill for about 3 weeks, or for a quicker oil place your jar(remove the lid) into a pre-heated oven of 250 degrees, cut the oven off and let it stay in the oven for about 24 hours (don’t open the door). 3. Strain through cheesecloth and store in cool place for up to a year.
Bruising Oil (with pain)
1. Take 20 drops of Trauma Oil 2. Add 5 drops of Rosemary EO 3. Add 5 drops of Lavender EO Apply to the bruised area or even add to a cold compress to decrease swelling.
Bruising Oil (with anti-inflammatory properties)
1. Take 20 drops of Trauma Oil 2. Add 2-4 drops of Lavender, Helichrysum, Frankincense, and Rosemary* *Rosemary is not to be used if you have epilepsy The recipes above are NOT to be ingested. Only use topically.
Finding a General Practitioner
Checklist of Questions to ask a Physician during your first visit: • Are you board certified? What is your specialty? • How long have you been a primary care physician? • Am I able to call you directly in case of emergency? • How does your office handle emergencies if I cannot get a hold of you? • Am I able to call or email you with non-emergency questions? If so, how long should I expect to wait for a response? • How long should I expect to wait for an appointment after calling to schedule one? • If necessary, am I able to schedule a same-day ap-pointment for urgent situations? • What days and hours do you see patients for non-emergency appointments? • Is this a group practice? Or should I expect to see you each time I visit?
How to find the right General Practitioner for you If you’ve recently moved to Nashville, changed insurance providers, or simply had an problem with your past general practitioner, you will need to find a new one. Joshua Odum offers some helpful ways to narrow down your search for the general practitioner who is right for you.
F
ind physicians contracted by your insurance company – The benefits of seeing a general practitioner contracted through your health insurance over an out-of-network GP cannot be overstated. If you see an out-of-network provider for a general consultation, you will almost certainly be stuck with the entire cost of treatment. If you see an out-of-network provider in emergencies, insurers are required to treat this care as if it is in-network, but the provider itself will still bill you. All insurance companies will provide a list of physicians who are
a part of their network and will honor the rates the company has negotiated with them. This list can often be organized by location, allowing you to see the providers in your network who are closest to you. If you have health insurance, your search will be narrowed down considerably to a set of doctors who have a special relationship with your insurance, and who you will not have to pay out-of-pocket to visit. If you know a hospital that accepts your insurance, you can also check the hospital’s website for profiles of doctors who work with them. 19
• If you are unavailable, whom should I expect to see? • If I need to seek a specialist, will you work with me to find the right person? • Are you comfortable with me bringing a friend or family member with me to an appointment? • Do you have an online resource with additional information? For the full list go to: https://emedcert.com/

Finding a General Practitioner
Get recommendations from friends – If you have friends who have lived in your area for a long time, they will certainly have opinions about one or more general practitioners who have treated them, and be able to provide you with more information than a website bio or online review. Many people who have lived in one area for a long time have seen the same doctor for many years. Your best bet to see how a general practitioner interacts with and treats real patients would be to ask a friend or coworker who has received their treatment. Consider your preexisting conditions and specific needs – Despite the name general practitioner, many primary care doctors will have specific specialties and areas of particular expertise. As such, you should assess your preexisting conditions and compare them with the experience and expertise of general practitioners you are considering. If you have a specific health condition, organizations that offer assistance to individuals with that condition will often provide resources that help you find local general practitioners who are the best prepared to treat your specific condition.
Look for doctors who are accepting new patients – Obviously, if a doctor you are considering is not interested in accepting new patients, you won’t have much luck trying to book an appointment with them. Check the doctor’s website, or call, to determine whether they are accepting new patients or not. Read online reviews… With a caveat – Both Yelp and Zocdoc compile reviews of doctors written by their real patients. However, consider this: patients are far more likely to take the time to complain about a problem they experienced than to write a positive review. Though there may be a disproportionate amount of bad reviews to good ones, the reviews you find can still tell you a lot about the doctor in question. If there are many negative reviews that mention the same problem, or if the reviewers mention a problem that is very important to you, that can be criteria to cause you to consider different options. Vegetarian Eating
Going Vegetarian in Nashville Makenzie Jones (pictured) reviews some of her favorite Vegetarian restaurants in Nashville.
L
iving in the food culture that we do, it has become almost like a competition for the most eco-friendly, Instagram-worthy, health-encouraging menu to appeal to the most people, no matter what meal of the day or genre of cooking. The Nashville community is very proud of its growing population and beautiful parks, both of which are bringing the rise of vegetarianism with them. Let’s take a look at some of the hottest spots you can feed your taste buds without compromising your diet or lifestyle. The name may sound misleading, but one of the most well-known vegetarian restaurants is located in East Nashville called Wild Cow. They purchase almost all their food in whole form, so while the food is delicious, there are few ingredients. Many of them are also from local growers, so they are fresh and often organic. One of the restaurant’s claims to fame is that they have no microwaves or freezers. The goal beyond food is to bring people together. Every Thursday, 2.5% of sales go to a charity of the month. In efforts to help more animals of the area, each month also features a special dog up for adoption. The menu features bowls with additions such as quinoa, tempeh, tofu, beans, and lentils for protein. A unique taco they offer is sweet potato and black bean with lime slaw, and pumpkin seeds. Aside from the regular menu, there are daily specials and desserts.
Another popular and all-vegetarian, all-vegan spot is the Sunflower Café. Known for their veggie burgers and barbecue, the Café offers daily specials Monday through Saturday: black bean quinoa bake, barbecue tacos, lasagna, enchiladas, mock crab cake, chef’s choice, and every day has ginger tofu. Every menu item can be a la carte, so customers can have their meals customized any way they like. Salads, wraps, bowls, and burgers provide unique flavor that would keep even meat-eaters from missing a thing! The Aloha burger, for example, is a veggie patty topped with Sweet Chili Pineapple Compote, Red Onions, Spinach & Tomato. Sauce, topping, and side additions, as well as switches and substitutions (especially with grains, buns, and breads, or go all-veg and wrap it in lettuce). To extend beyond the store, Sunflower Café also offers full catering.
Sunflower Cafe is known for its Veggie Burgers.
Wild Cow bbq soy curl sandwich with rice noodle and hearts of palm salad
Relatively new, also in East Nashville, is Graze, another completely plant-based restaurant. A bit more upscale dining, Graze uses only the highest quality ingredients to ensure quality and satisfaction for the customers and the environment. Unique offerings include chickpea bay cakes made with tofu, cashews, and seaweed. Tofu rancheros on the brunch menu is a scramble with black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, green onions, and cilantro. Graze serves elite eats, but they also have fresh pressed and blended juices and smoothies! 21
Graze: Menu is ‘completely plant based’.
Open for all three meals as a part of the Bongo Java family, Grin’s Vegetarian Café is located on Vanderbilt’s campus, so it is only open when the University is in session, but it is open to the public. Try a unique buffalo cauliflower bowl with black beans, quinoa, red cabbage, cucumber, and housemade dressing. The Woodlands is an Indian vegetarian restaurant, offering many authentic dishes. On the weekends, they serve a buffet, great for trying out new things! These restaurants’ menus are totally vegetarian and/or vegan, but there are many other restaurants with a plant-based focus that also serve meat. Others have a traditional menu with many vegetarian and vegan options or substitutions. Vui’s Kitchen is a Vietnamese restaurant that is not exclusively vegetarian but has many options. The Little Octopus is not exclusive either, but their focus is on clean and fresh foods, providing a variety of seafood for pescatarians. The Thai Phooket’s dishes are mostly meat, but tofu or vegetables can be substituted. It may make you giggle, but I Dream of Weenie even offers a tofu weenie.

Healthy Stomach recipes
Food for a healthy Stomach There are some simple ways to improve your stomach’s health. Makenzie Jones (pictured) asked two local experts for their suggestions on meals and food that can help.
G
ut health, GI, tummy troubles, whatever you may call it, an upset stomach is not something people want to experience. Some foods are known to cause problems, and some people are more sensitive to certain foods than others, but there are many other factors that come into play with the stomach and digestion. It goes beyond the stomach to every part of the body system that works with food processing. From your mouth to your…well, you know, the way food is processed by the body affects overall health and all the other body systems. Your gut, which includes all the organs that help break down food, is a place where good bacteria should be found to help regulate everything from immune, hormone, and vitamin and mineral levels. Along with eliminating the unneeded parts of food, it also gets rid of various toxins that get into the body. There are some simple, yet often overlooked, ways to help improve your gut health from various aspects. Since food (and harmful things) enter through your mouth and nose, an easy place to start is regularly flossing, brushing, and going to the dentist. Where do you find this good bacteria? Probiotics are a big trend right now, commonly found in fermented foods like yogurt, kraut, and kombucha, but healthy bacteria can be found in many places that you simply breathe. Spend some extra time taking in the fresh air on a hike, garden, or with pets. It is also easy to help the good grow by eating more fiber and by limiting the bad bacteria by reducing sugar. This simple recipe provides three sources of fermented foods, as well as fiber.
Recipe 1: Miso-Ginger Soba Noodles
This recipe contains three sources of fermented foods: miso, raw apple cider vinegar, and sauerkraut or kimchi. It also provides plenty of prebiotic-rich fibrous veggies like kale and red bell pepper to feed those good bacteria you’re adding to your system. Ingredients: For the miso vinaigrette: 3 tablespoons organic red or white miso paste ¼ cup raw apple cider vinegar (I use Dr. Bragg’s) 2 tablespoons roasted sesame oil; 2 teaspoons honey; 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger; 2 tablespoons gluten-free tamari For the noodles: 1 8-ounce package soba noodles (look for 100% buckwheat gluten-free noodles); 3 scallions, diced; 3 large leaves of kale, stems diced and leaves cut into thin ribbons; 1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips Chili flakes (optional, to taste) ½ cup of your favorite naturally fermented kraut or kimchi (I love Short Mountain Culture’s Gold Zinger Kraut for this recipe); Sesame seeds and hemp seeds (optional, as a garnish) Instructions: • Prepare the vinaigrette by whisking together the miso paste, apple cider vinegar, sesame oil, honey, ginger, and tamari. Set aside. • Cook the noodles in boiling salted water according to package directions. Drain and rinse well with cold running water (this will help prevent the buckwheat noodles from sticking together, which they easily do). Immediately transfer the cold noodles to a large bowl and dress with the vinaigrette (this will also help them from sticking). • Toss the scallions, kale, bell pepper, and chili flakes (to taste, if you like a little heat) with the noodles. • Divide between four plates, and garnish each with a big pinch of kraut and a sprinkle of sesame and hemp seeds. • This next recipe will help satisfy your own sweet tooth as well as provide an option to get your kids guts off to a healthy start! They may still notice the fermented twang, but as with so many things, learning young is the best time to grow and adapt! 23
Recipe 2: Probiotic Apple Sauce
Ingredients: 1 cup organic, unsweetened applesauce ½ teaspoon – 1 tablespoon sauerkraut juice (spooned off your trusty jar of kraut that you should have in the fridge by now!) Pinch ground cinnamon (optional) Instructions: In a small bowl, stir the kraut juice into the apple sauce. Season with a pinch of cinnamon for added sweetness, if you like. Start with the smallest amount of kraut juice and test that with your children, then gradually work your way up to the full tablespoon as they begin to enjoy the tart, sour flavor. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. (Courtesy: Happy Belly Healthy Food Home Delivery).
Recipe 3: Red Cabbage Sauerkraut
Ingredients: 3 to 4 tbsp sea salt; 1 head organic red cabbage; 3 tbsp grated ginger; 3 to 5 cloves garlic Instructions: • Mix a brine of about 4 cups of water and 4 tablespoons of salt (I use Redmond Ancient All Natural Sea Salt and only need 3 tbsp). Stir well to thoroughly dissolve salt. The brine should taste good and salty. • Chop the cabbage and let soak in the brine, covered by a plate or other weight to keep it submerged overnight. (You can use a crock, several mason jars or any large glass jar) • The next day, prepare the spices. I use a food processor to chop the garlic and ginger. • Drain most of the brine off the vegetables. I like to keep enough brine to just cover the veggies. • Mix the garlic and ginger with the vegetables. Mix everything together thoroughly and stuff it into a clean jar. Pack it tightly into the jar, pressing down until brine rises. • Ferment in your kitchen or other warm place. Taste the sauerkraut every day, pushing the vegetables into the brine. After about a week of fermentation, when it tastes ripe, move it to the refrigerator.
Recipe 4: Granola Parfait
Ingredients 8oz Organic Yogurt; 1 cup granola; Mixed fruit (optional) Instructions: • Place 1/3 cup of granola in a parfait glass (or mason jar). Top with half of the yogurt. • Repeat layers. • Top with remaining granola. • Note, mix any of your favorite fruits into the yogurt before assembling or layer fruit in between yogurt and granola layers if so desired. Food Trucks
Meals on wheels:
What’s on the Nashville Food Truck Menu Nashville has become one of the region’s top cities for foodies, thanks to the unique restaurants found in downtown and extending throughout Nashville. Food trucks have entered the scene and are taking the streets by storm. While previously thought of as a cheap, sub-par option for food, you can now find trucks with gourmet eats like you would never believe could come from a vehicle. Makenzie Jones (pictured) reviews some of her favorites.
T
here are options for every taste and every meal of the day. Whether you are vegetarian, all about the meat, or follow whatever your nose and tummy call for at the moment, there is a truck for you. Topping the list of popular food trucks in the area is The Grilled Cheeserie. This is not the kind of grilled cheese you enjoyed as a little tot, but these sandwiches are gourmet grills! For example, the Pimento Mac & Chee features homemade pimento cheese and locally-made cheddar with macaroni, tomato, and bacon bits. You can even create your own melt piecing together the various ingredients they offer, including 5 cheeses, 4 breads, 4 meats, and 8 extras. There is a variety of side items to complement the sandwiches, but to finish things off, their “milkshake bar” offers many flavors to satisfy your stomach as well as your eyes.
Specialties for the mobile include many varieties of lobster, a couple fish or shrimp dishes, along with their own tots. A unique offering by Louisiana Seafood is crawfish. Bob’s has a smaller menu, but it is just what you would find at a neighborhood fish fry, complete with banana pudding for dessert.
Cousin’s Maine Lobster, lobster roll.
To explore tastes from around the world, you can try Et Voila, a French-American mobile, featuring sandwiches, salads, a quiche du jour, pastries and desserts like crème brulee, beignets, and tarts. A Little Italian food truck serves pasta and sandwiches. For something spicy, try Yayo’s OMG or Mas Tacos Por Favor for some tacos (obviously) or Dagthai for chili and curry. For something totally new, King Tut’s Truck has an Egyptian food menu.
Whether it’s a barbeque theme from Smoke Et Al, Southwestern flair from The Rolling Feast, southern soul from Delta Bound, or a classic but bold burger from Hoss’s, all these food truck chefs are dedicated to providing customers with an experience as highquality as it is unique. You may have childhood memories of the ice cream truck, but there is no shame in chasing down one of these dessert trucks at any age. Retro Sno serves snoballs fit for kids and adults alike with flavors from rainbow to sangria. Two dessert trucks that I have visited and find personally appealing are Bradley’s Creamery and S’more Love Bakery. Bradley’s offers traditional and seasonal homemade ice cream, shakes and floats. S’more Love crafts unique and photogenic s’mores with homemade marshmallows and heartshaped grahams. Not limited to the traditional mallow and chocolate, menu items such as “Elivs” have toppings like ganache, peanut butter, and banana. These trucks can be found all over the Nashville and surrounding areas and events including 12 South, the 12 South Farmer’s Market, the Downtown Farmer’s Market, various parks, and more. Schedules can be found on individual trucks’ websites.
Gourmet grills from The Grilled Cheeserie.
Bringing seafood to the streets are Cousins Maine Lobster, Louisiana Seafood Company, and Bob’s Fish Fry. Cousin’s has food trucks in multiple states across the country as well as restaurants.

Foot Detoxing
Time to try Foot Detoxing? Imagine sitting in a comfortable chair, sipping a warm cup of tea, listening to calming music and soaking those long -suffering feet of yours for a half hour. Sounds like bliss, right? And what if someone told you by doing this you will be helping your body and brain to detox and be more efficient and healthy. Sheri Rowney of Harmonized Brain centers (pictured) looks at how Foot Detoxing works.
I
onized foot baths is a way of easily and naturally removing toxins and wastes from your body in an unobtrusive, comfortable environment. It works by using a dual electrode module composed of a positive anode – where the electrical current flows in, and a negatively charged ion where the current flows out - so an electromagnetic field in the foot bath is created. These energized ions behave like magnets and draw toxins out the body via the 2,000 pores that are in the bottom of your feet. Ion Cleanse is supported by the idea that organs such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, brain etc., hold onto toxins, especially heavy metals, and that these organs need help in releasing and detoxing from them. During a foot detox session, it is believed that only about 10% of these toxins are released at a time but that through a few sessions, more and more will be removed. During the session, your feet are placed in a tub of warm water with the ionic array. A few sprinkles of salt are added and immediately you will see the water around the array begin to bubble as the ions become activated. The water will start to change to a rusty color almost immediately, simply a reaction of the ionizer to the salt. But then other things begin to happen. As the minutes pass, a ‘scum’ will appear on the water’s edge, evidence that the detoxification has begun. Following a color chart provided, we can help you identify where the toxins may be coming from. When your 30 minute session is complete, you simply wash your feet, drink a nice glass of water and leave feeling very calm and relaxed. There are a few restrictions to the foot detoxification: If you are pregnant, nursing, have had an organ transplant, or have any electrical component (such as a pacemaker), you cannot do the ionized foot bath. Foot detoxes can be done up to twice a week for 14 times, then it is recommended that you take a two week break before beginning them again.
top signs you may be suffering from a build-up of toxicity • Sugar cravings • Low or inconsistent energy • Bloating or gas • Caffeine addiction • Binge eating or drinking • Mood swings/ irritability/anxiety • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating • Fluid retention
Resting your feet in a relaxing bowl of warm water, the normal foot detox session lasts 30 minutes.
As you progress through your treatments, what you see in the water will change, with the goal being for the water to be clearer with less surface material present. We live in a world where toxins are present everywhere; in our environment, food and water not to mention the products we come in to contact with on a day to day basis. Our bodies are amazing machines that work diligently to run smoothly and efficiently but when presented with a constant barrage of toxicity, it can become overwhelmed and sick. Clean eating, exercise and a healthy regimen can help overcome these pollutants and keep us well and functioning at our best but maybe a Foot Detox might just assist your body in this on going battle Come by and try it today at Harmonized Brain Centers of Nashville, you’ll be amazed at what you see! Call 615 331 8762 to make an appointment. Each 30 minute session costs just $30, with discounts for booking multiple sessions. Living a happy life
How to Live a Meaningful Life? Nearly 100 years ago, Albert Einstein shared his theory of happiness,”A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.” Sadhguru, a yogi, mystic and foremost authority on yoga provides insights on how to create a life that is meaningful, successful, while maintaining happiness and inner balance.
I
n the pursuit of a meaningful life, we may measure our success in terms of actions or outcomes or the physical things we attain along the way; the size or expense of the new car, house, or the rank or power in the job we have acquired. We may lose sight of the quality of how we are along the way. Today, only a one-third of Americans report feeling happy, according to the 2017 Harris Poll Survey of American Happiness.
Sadhguru: Everything that we do is in some way contributing to someone’s life. If you see how to make this a conscious process of contributing to everyone’s life through your work, then your life will be very different. Contributing does not mean that you will not make money in your business. If you constantly see how to give your best to everyone around you, then profit will happen – you do not have to worry about it. Contributing is not about money or material – it is the basic volition of your life. If you make your life into a contribution, then your life will become truly meaningful and worthwhile because you are creating what you care for. If you are creating what you care for, then it will be a joy to go to work every day. With this, you will never die of stress, believe me. You may die of exhaustion, but you will not die of stress. That is a very good thing. The moment you are seeing how to contribute, the moment there is a certain pleasantness of experience within you, your
body and mind will function at their best. There is substantial scientific and medical evidence to prove this. If your body and mind are not functioning at their best, do you believe you will attain success? Success is a consequence of harnessing all that you have to the best possible result. If this has to happen, you must be in a pleasant state of experience. Then, the more you do, the better you should feel. This will only happen to you if you are always looking at how to make a contribution to everything around you. If you were feeling really ecstatic, would you ask about the purpose of life? You are asking this question because in some way, the experience of life is not good enough. Most human beings have become a bundle of thoughts, emotions, ideas, opinions and prejudices. That means your psychological drama is hijacking your life. Most of the time, you are only thinking about life, not living it. You have come here to live life, not to think about it. Do not try to invent all kinds of purposes for life. If you explore the nature of this life that you are, you will know that life does not need any purpose – life is too phenomenal by itself. If you experience this life in its fullness, life is a purpose unto itself. We usually think of “success” in terms of what we could do and where we will stand in the world. What I see is, generally successful people are far more stressed and are suffering a lot more than the not-so-successful people. Success means essentially, you are sitting on a good perch. So if someone sits on a perch which they are not equipped to sit on, success kills them. If people are successful because of social trends, educational qualifications or family 27
backgrounds which carry them to certain places, then they suffer constantly. If you want to enjoy your perch, it is very important that before you engineer situations for success, you first engineer yourself. Essentially, people’s stress and suffering have nothing to do with success or failure. Stress is not happening to you because of the work that you are doing but because you have not learned how to handle the basic faculties of your body and mind. Every human experience has a chemical basis to it. You may call it stress, anxiety, bliss, or ecstasy, but everything has a chemical basis to it. As there is a science for external wellbeing, there is a whole science as to how to create your inner chemistry. Yoga has many methods through which you can create the right kind of chemistry where being peaceful and joyous comes naturally to you. Everything has become a crisis in people’s lives. Adolescence was a crisis, finding a career was a crisis, midlife is a crisis, old age is a crisis. So when are they not in a crisis? If they sense a little bit of a crisis, that is when most people freak out. But especially if you are in a crisis, it is all the more important that you function at your best at that moment, but that is when most people give in. This dimension can be easily transcended if a person is willing to invest a certain amount of time upon themselves. If you think what you are doing is important, then the first thing that you need to do is work upon yourself. Various types of methods are available through which every human being can do this. There are ways to improve the very way the fundamental life force within you functions – there is a whole science and technology for this. Sadhguru will be personally offering Inner Engineering in San Mateo, November 3-4, at the San Mateo Event Center. As Sadhguru rarely conducts this program, this is a unique opportunity to learn Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, a lifetransforming practice from him. Beard Transplants
Beard hair transplants boom in popularity If you have a patchy, thin beard and it bothers you, you can have that fixed. Beard hair transplants have grown in popularity, says Nashville’s PAI Medical Group clinic director, Michael Ramsey (pictured). “The request for beard transplants has increased nearly 500% in the last few years. Beards, that is if you can grow one, seem to be everywhere”.
M
any men, who would love to grow a beard, have suffered in silence and embarrassment because they simply can’t. The good news is there is a permanent, natural option to reverse this problem. Michael says, “We’ve been offering beard transplants for over 15 years. It’s really quite simple. Our hair transplant surgeon harvests permanent growing hair from the back and or sides of the patient’s head. These hairs are considered permanent and similar enough to beard hair in texture that once transplanted look as if they were there all along. Our most popular request is to fill in unattractive patchy, uneven beards,” he continues. “While we do help some men with almost no beards at all, it’s the thin patchy beard patient that seeks us out the most.
20 years ago, facial hair was considered a nono if you wanted to advance your career in most professions. In fact, many employers prohibited beards and only partially tolerated mustaches. Today, facial hair of all kinds is accepted, and in some places, encouraged. The rise in popularity of “No-Shave November” has gotten more popular each year. From all over the country, both blue and white collar professionals in high rise offices put away their razors in November and join the movement. The original movement started with the idea to stop shaving and donate the money spent towards a good cause. While that’s still the reason for some, most just use it as an excuse to grow out their facial hair. Some men find that they like their 28
beards so much that they continue wearing them long after the November challenge is over. Not only have work place rules softened against beards, women have begun to champion the cause. Some women, previously against beards, have changed their tunes. According to work done by Neave and shields (2008) female participants found men with stubble more attractive. Traits like masculinity, dominance, attractiveness and social maturity were used to describe these men. Light beards or stubble were considered the most attractive. Full beards scored high for parenting skills, trust-worthiness and overall stability. A more recent study in 2013 by Dixon and Brooks found the trend continuing. Additionally, beards can hide scars, unsightly facial features and help prop up weaker jawlines, hide wrinkles and other signs of aging. Beards give men more options to change things up. Men don’t typically wear make-up or jewelry like women, so many men have turned to facial hair as a way to update or change their look. The growth rate in razor sales has slumped 12% from 2012 to 2016. Beard grooming products have gown during that period. Ustraa, a men’s grooming product retailer, sells beard oils, lotions and styling gels for beards. They report selling 40,000 units of beard oil a month. Searching YouTube for beard styles reveals well over 700,000 results. Social media influencers, Hollywood celebrities and many sports figures wear beards more than ever before. These people drive trends, for better or worse. Remember the Mullet popularized by Achy Breaky Heart song crooner Billy Ray Cyrus? Usually trends like that one only last a few years and fade away. However, beards are still going strong and there are no signs that is going to change soon. So for you guys out there with thin patchy beards who want to change things up, update your look and perhaps improve your sex appeal – now you have an option. Far-Reaching impact of tooth loss Tooth loss can occur for many reasons, and the process of tooth extraction can cause anxiety and discomfort. But, the psychological effects can last for years. About 70 percent of people in the United States are missing one or more teeth, so everyone should try to understand the far-reaching effects of tooth loss. Jaime A Romero (pictured) of Solace Oral Surgery explains the options.
Replacement Options Ideally, when a tooth or teeth need to be removed, they are replaced. If the issue involves one tooth, oral professionals may implant a post and crown or bridges. The psychological effects of this depend on the person’s degree of satisfaction in the replacement tooth. Ill-fitted crowns and bridges cause discomfort and trouble chewing, resulting in anxiety and frustration. Cleaning a bridge requires extra attention. If a person is not willing to adhere to an increased cleansing regimen, gum issues may arise. Another option is dental implants. Implants are an effective solution for single tooth replacement or multiple teeth. With this solution, the tooth both looks and functions just like a natural tooth. Dentures may be used when all teeth are removed. A well-fitted denture is important, as illfitting dentures cause pain and make it difficult to eat. Denture wearers may be anxious about eating in public, and patients who suffer bone loss in their jaw have difficulty wearing dentures. A person with too much bone loss may not be a good candidate for dentures.
Restore Your Confidence
Absence of oral treatment often leads to avoiding social situations because of changes in appearance and speech, as well as difficulty eating. Contact Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392 to learn how we can restore your confidence with oral management and treatment.
Severity of Impact
Appearance
The number and location of missing teeth is a factor in the degree of impact the loss will have on a person. Loss of front teeth has the most emotional impact on a person.
Teeth also affect our facial appearance. Teeth make a person look younger by filling out the jaw area. When multiple teeth are missing, the face sags inward, making the person appear older. This also affects a person’s social interaction and can lead to low self-esteem and depression.
Speech Teeth affect the way we talk, and missing teeth can make it difficult to pronounce certain sounds. A change in speech impacts a person’s social interaction, and he or she may become self-conscious and depressed.
Additional Dental Issues Missing teeth can lead to additional dental problems, too. As teeth begin to move, teeth above or below the missing one may develop issues. A person may chew food exclusively on one side of their mouth, causing jaw soreness and other complications. 29

Brain Tumors: Signs and Symptoms A brain tumor is a scary thing to face. While the diagnosis can feel daunting, it helps to be aware that there are many different kinds of brain tumors, and many different kinds of treatments. Chris Taleghani, of Pinnacle Surgery Partners explains.
weakness in an arm or leg are the most common symptoms. However, seizures, personality changes and/or visual problems may also occur. An aggressive treatment plan for meningiomas can include surgery and radiation. The location of the meningioma will determine how accessible it is to the surgeon. If it can’t be reached via surgery, radiation therapy may be used. Radiation can shrink the tumor or help prevent it from growing any larger.
Cancerous Tumors
The term ‘brain tumor’ can describe a wide range of tumors, all growing from many different types of cells. Secondary (metastatic) brain tumors are tumors that result from cancer that starts elsewhere in your body and then spreads (metastasizes) to your brain. Any cancer can spread to the brain, but the most common types include: Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Melanoma. Secondary brain tumors are far more common than primary brain tumors. In most people with primary brain tumors, the cause of the tumor is not clear…but doctors have identified some factors that may increase your risk of a secondary brain tumor. Risk factors include: family history, exposure to radiation, as well as your age. Symptoms might be headaches, poor vision, short term memory loss and poor coordination.

S
ome tumors are benign (non cancerous) and some are malignant (cancerous). Brain tumors can begin in your brain…or cancer can begin in another part of your body and then spread to your brain. When this happens, it is called a secondary or metastatic brain tumor. Primary brain tumors begin when normal cells acquire errors (mutations) in their DNA. These mutations allow cells to grow and divide at increased rates and to continue living when healthy cells would die. The result is a mass of abnormal cells, which forms a tumor.
Non Cancerous Tumors
Let’s start by discussing Meningioma. A meningioma is a usually non cancerous tumor that arises from the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. They represent about one-third of all primary
brain tumors and occur most frequently in middleaged women. Although meningiomas are referred to as brain tumors, they do not grow from brain tissues, they arise from the meninges, which are three thin layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. These tumors are most often found near the top and the outer curve of the brain. Tumors may also form at the base of the skull. When getting the diagnosis of a ‘non cancerous’ tumor, one might feel relief and even joy. But there are many serious and urgent concerns when it comes to these types of tumors. Meningiomas usually grow inward, causing pressure on the brain or spinal cord. They also can grow outward toward the skull, causing it to thicken. Most meningiomas are slow-growing tumors. Some contain sacs of fluid (cysts), mineral deposits (calcifications), or tightly packed bunches of blood vessels. Headache and 30
