chocolate chip cookie Scones Total time: 43 mins. 8 scones Ingredients: • 4 tablespoons refrigerated butter • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 cups spelt flour (sub whole wheat pastry, all-purpose or GF all-purpose) • 1/3 cup coconut sugar • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
8 reasons why Avocados are good for you
Did you know that Avocados are considered a fruit and not a vegetable? While the majority of fruits consist primarily of carbohydrates, avocados are high in fat. These delicious superfoods are packed with a ton of health benefits. Here are 8 reasons why you need to add them to your diet. 1. Avocados are jam-packed with nutrients! By eating a single 3.5 ounce serving, here are the nutrients you’ll be supplying your body with: 2. Vitamin K An essential nutrient necessary for responding to injuries, this vitamin regulates normal blood clotting. 3. Folate This nutrient plays a vital role in cellular metabolism and energy production.
4. Vitamin C This vitamin is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. 5. Potassium This mineral treats high blood pressure, helps maintain consistent blood pressure and aids in the prevention of strokes. 6. Vitamin B5 Recognized as one of the most important vitamins for human life, Vitamin B5 is necessary for making blood cells. It also helps you convert the food you eat into energy. 7. Vitamin B6 Also known as Pyridoxine, Vitamin B6 is required for the proper function of sugars, fats, and proteins in the body. It is also required for the proper growth and development of the brain, nerves, skin, and many other parts of the body, 8. Vitamin E This vitamin is key for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes.
• 1/4 teaspoon sea salt • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1/2-3/4 cups plain full fat yogurt (can use any kind as long as its plain)
DIrECTIons:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with nonstick parchment paper. 2. Cut butter into small 1/4 inch cubes. Place in a small bowl back in the refrigerator. In another small bowl, whisk together applesauce and vanilla extract. Set aside (room temp is fine). 3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and sea salt. 4. Working quickly, use clean fingers to pinch the cold butter with the dry mixture, breaking the butter down into small pieces. Stir in the applesauce/ vanilla extract, which should create a crumbly, ragged looking texture. 5. Stir in chocolate chips. Starting with 1/2 cup, stir in yogurt just until the dough starts to come together. You don’t want it to be a wet dough; there should still be some dry bits that don’t stick. 6. Turn dough out onto baking sheet and knead gently a few times, just folding the dough in on itself. Form dough into a disk, approximately 8 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall. Using a sharp knife, slice disk into 8 wedges. If using, brush with a thin layer of almond milk and sprinkle on cacao nibs. 7. Bake scones for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow scones to cool at least 10 minutes before separating into wedges.

Gluten intolerance maybe caused by Pesticides on Crops
Essential Oils
More than 18 million people are said to have some intolerance to gluten, the sticky protein that can be found in breads, barley, and other wheat products. But how scientifically grounded is this sudden wave of large-scale gluten intolerance? As it turns out, it may not be gluten that is triggering health problems, but a reaction to agrochemicals being used in the harvesting of wheat. So we have to ask: Is Monsanto’s glyphosate the true cause of sensitivity to glutenous foods? In 2011, an Australian scientist named Peter Gibson at Monash University conducted an experiment to determine whether gluten in the diet can cause gastrointestinal distress in people who did not have celiac disease. When experiments confirmed this hypothesis, they named this condition ‘non-celiac gluten sensitivity‘ or NCGS, thus beginning the gluten-free trend, which has resulted in an estimated $15 billion industry by 2016. But the findings of his new study showed that although in opposition to the results found in the first experiment, gluten intolerance actually does not exist in people without celiac disease. Although gluten is no longer believed to be the culprit of health problems reportedly associated with consuming glutenous wheat, that does not mean that conventionally grown wheat is completely safe to eat.
Using Essential Oils To Maximize Benefits of Yoga By Sheila McGinnis
You may be aware of the benefits of doing Yoga, such as helping with chronic pain, flexibility, stress relief, self-reflection as well as keeping your whole body and mind grounded. Adding essential oils to your practice will enhance these benefits. I prefer to have them diffused in the area while doing yoga, but applying on the base of your feet is great as well. Below are several oils that will give you added benefits. • Ylang-ylang: releases a feeling of stress and tension as well as helping with emotional healing. • Eucalyptus: promotes our breath functions by opening up our airways. • Cypress: works at calming our nervous system and boosts our sense of being centered. • Bergamot: this oil is a “nurturing” oil that will boost our happiness and relieves minor depression. • Frankincense: helps with inner peace and is my favorite oil for keeping you grounded.
Even non-GMO wheat is drenched with Monsanto’s carcinogenic glyphosate Round-up just days before harvest, because, as it turns out, wheat fields produce slightly more seed when sprayed with this poison 7-10 days before harvest, as researched by Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT. Not only has glyphosate been found to be a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization, but has been linked to a variety of other health issues including depression, diabetes, celiac disease and gluten intolerance. “If Glyphosate ends up in bread it’s impossible for people to avoid it, unless they are eating organic. On the other hand, farmers could easily choose not to use Glyphosate as a spray on wheat crops – just before they are harvested. This is why the Soil Association is calling for the immediate ending of the use of Glyphosate sprays on wheat destined for use in bread.” – Peter Melchett of the Soil Association For the full story go to: https://www. facebook.com/227433297335/ posts/10155775993332336/
Even more bad news about ‘Round Up’
Not only can essential oils benefit your yoga practice but you can also keep your mat nice and clean by making your own yoga mat cleaner. See the recipe below: • 4 oz. glass spray bottle • 3 oz. of distilled water • 1 oz. of witch hazel • 2 drops of tea tree oil • 1 drop of lavender • 2 drops of lemon
Testing 45 samples from over a dozen brands, including Quaker, General Mills, and Kellogg’s, EWG found glyphosate in all but two samples of products made with conventionally grown oats. Around 75 percent of those samples had glyphosate levels above what EWG scientists consider “protective of children’s health with an adequate margin of safety.” And yes, organic brands like Nature’s Path and even the oats from Whole Foods bulk bin, had glyphosate detected in them. In fact, around a third of the 16 organic oat product samples tested had glyphosate, which can be credited to drift from nearby non-organic farms, as well as possible exposure during production. The study concluded that “The EPA has calculated that 1-to-2-year-old children

are likely to have the highest exposure, at a level twice greater than California’s No Significant Risk Level and 230 times EWG’s health benchmark.” Considering cereals like Cheerios are often one of the first solid foods toddlers snack on, this is extremely significant when it comes to the health of consumers. Butterfly Institute announces ‘First Flight’ fundraiser
PERSONAL ADVICE: ASK DR. LISA
Overcoming betrayal and broken trust in relationships
G
ood relationships are based on trust. Particularly when there has been a significant time commitment in the relationship we want to hold onto the misguided belief that both have each other’s best interest at heart—or “why would they continue the relationship?” Talking to clients who have been betrayed often have hindsight that if they had looked closely enough the signs were there. When trust is broken reactions can vary from shock – “I didn’t see that one coming” to personal disbelief. One of my clients recently recalled, “I had a feeling things were not lining up, but I didn’t have hard evidence. To make it worse I thought we were friends, that we were both invested in our relationship and our future plans we were mutually building. I should have listened to my nagging sense everything was not ok.” Because of this client’s false perception of mutual trust they chose to ignore or overlook the signs that everything was “not ok” In the end they silenced the internal radar that was waving a red flag. So, how can you trust again after betrayal? 1. Check it out. Everyone has a particular point of view. What seems like a clear betrayal to one person might be seen as a skewed perspective to another. That’s why it’s incredibly important to check out the other people involved. Holding on to resentment and negative energies toward people inevitably will spill over into the other relationships in your life therefore giving more power to the betrayal. 2. Shift your attitude. Although you are hurt, keep working toward your best self. Psychologist Albert Bandura conducted a study that showed just how great a role our attitudes play in the face of failure. When failure was viewed as a learning opportunity participants performed progressively better on a task and even rated themselves as more confident. 3. Put your energy into bringing yourself closer to where you want to be. We have limited time, energy and emotional resources every day. Where will
The Butterfly Institute will be hosting the First Flight, inaugural fundraiser at the Grand Ole Opry on November 1, 2018 to launch the C.A.R.E. Wellness and Research Campus. The C.A.R.E. acronym represents Counsel/Access/ Resources/Education. The non profit organization will serve the greater Nashville area “with integrative and holistic care and seek to make our resources accessible to all who need it”, say the organizers.. The fundraising event will secure land and initiate the groundbreaking of the C.A.R.E campus. The planned facilities will feature ‘the latest in organic and renewable resources, an eco-greenhouse, event space/ teaching kitchen, research facility, and community educational center’. • The Butterfly Institute is a non-profit 501(C)(3) established to help people gain access to improved health and
you spend these resources? Do you want to put your energy into settling scores, or would you rather create the life you truly desire? Each resource spent on negative thoughts or actions toward people who betray you takes finite resources from more positive relationships or more productive life directions you want to pursue. 4. What goes around comes around. What you give out, you get back. This adage is true in all relationships, whether personal or professional. Choose to take actions aligned with your values and purpose. Be true to your highest self and make decisions from there. Always. Just because others choose to be dishonest or lack transparency or truth in relationships does not give you a reason to do the same. I realize this statement may sound trite, but put good karma out into the world. Give the energy you want to receive. A betrayer’s actions are part of their karma, and negativity will catch up with them in time. 5. Embrace the betrayal. I know this is a tough one, but you must make peace with the betrayal. You need to look at what happened and ask, “What did I learn from this?” Particularly when thinking about business relationships or friendships there is a level of trust we must give to make the relationship grow. But sometimes we can get complacent or choose to let others ‘in’ and ignore warning signs. The betrayal happened for a reason: learn the hard lessons and move forward. Whatever your course of action, start releasing the negative feelings but gain insight from them. These painful lessons can serve a purpose. And in the end, you’ll be the wiser for it. I
ntermittent fasting is one of the most popular health & fitness trends today. So, what is it? I skip breakfast each day and eat two meals, the first between 12 – 1pm and the second between 6 – 7pm. Then, I fast until I start eating again the next day around noon. Common intermittent fasting methods involve daily 16-hour fasts or fasting for 24 hours, once or twice per week. Some recommend skipping breakfast or skipping dinner. You can decide which works best for your body and your lifestyle.
• Weight loss • Lowers insulin and blood sugar levels • Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes • Increases energy • Improves fat burning • Increases growth hormone • Lowers blood cholesterol • May prevent of Alzheimer’s disease • Heart health • May reduce the risk of cancer • Reduces inflammation
Intermittent fasting can help teach your body to use the food it consumes more efficiently. It is not a diet, it’s a pattern of eating. It’s a way of scheduling your meals so that you get the most out of them. It also gives the body adequate time to clean up and remove toxins from the body. Fasting has shown to improve conditions of metabolic disorders, lower the need for insulin medication, and help relieve inflammation.
Are you asking, “How do I get started?” Do you need help discerning if Intermittent Fasting is right for you? You’re invited to schedule a complimentary 30 minute assessment with Karina at www.karinahammer.com.

How chemical giant Bayer’s Here’s why you should be extremely worried. And do something about it NOW.
Why should what’s happening in Europe be of concern to you?
Here’s why: According to Tom Philpott of the Genetic Literacy Project:
“Here in the United States, use of neonicotinoids continues unabated. They’re widely applied to corn, soybean, and cotton seeds before planting. The chemicals suffuse the resulting plants, including their pollen and nectar, poisoning crop-chomping insects. Meanwhile, research uncovering the potential unintended effects from neonics continues to pile up. The pesticides are showing up at high levels in the Great Lakes and are likely harming songbirds, as well as bees. Perhaps most troublesome of all for the companies that make them, recent studies have found that neonics don’t seem to boost yields for either corn or soybean growers. Bees are vital to our food supply – providing one of every three bites of food we eat. But bees and other pollinators are declining at catastrophic rates and neonic pesticides are a key culprit. That’s why maintaining the EU’s ban on neonics is so important.”
Bayer is a $50bn German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company. It recently acquired Monsanto for $66bn (sellers of the cancer causing herbicide ‘Round Up’), creating some would argue an Environmental marriage made in Hell. Bayer has been around for over 100 years and has produced a vast array of pharmaceuticals from the life saving Aspirin, to the life taking Zyklon B used to gas prisoners during the World War 2 Holocaust.
B
ayer’s latest PR disaster (and Environmental one for us) is legal action in Europe to overturn an EU Court ban on the Neonic pesticides they produce, which repeated scientific research has shown significantly harms the Bee population (see side story). In May this year, the European Court of Justice ruled in favor of a partial ban on three Neonics – and environmentalists hoped the case was finally settled for the bees. But now, Bayer announced it wants to drag the EU back into court again and appeal. If it wins this Bee killing pesticide will continue to decimate one of the most important insects in our ecosystem. In May this year, the European Court of Justice ruled in favor of a partial ban on three neonics – and environmentalists hoped the case was finally settled for the bees. But now, Bayer announced it wants to drag the EU back into court again and appeal. If it wins, it would wreck the recent almost complete ban too. 10
America’s beekeepers watched as a third of the country’s honeybee colonies were lost over the last year, part of a decade-long dieoff experts said may threaten our food supply. It should be noted that the decline in Bee populations is not solely the result of these neonic chemicals, other factors such as habitat loss and disease are also a major factors. The annual survey of roughly 5,000 beekeepers showed the 33% dip from April 2016 to April 2017. The decrease is small compared to the survey’s previous 10 years, when the decrease hovered at roughly 40%. From 2012 to 2013, nearly half of the nation’s colonies died. (The US EPA has shown no real intention of making a move to ban these pesticides though some States, Maryland and Connecticut have done so by themselves). Bayer and Monsanto between them spent over $5m on Lobbyists, so they seem to be getting, so far, a good return on their investment.
The Environment
killing off our Bee population Leading the public campaign to uphold the ban is pressure group sumofus.org. On their website they claim: “Neonics are coated upon seeds before they are planted, spreading through the plant and killing insects stopping by for a snack. These pesticides can be replaced by more integrated pest management approaches which don’t have such a devastating effect on the food chain. But companies like Bayer, BASF and Syngenta make a fortune from selling neonics – so they’ll do everything they can to protect their profits”. SumOfUs have been right at the front of the global campaign to save our bees. Tens of thousands from the SumOfUs community took action and got Lowe’s – one of the biggest garden retailers in the
world – to stop selling bee-killing pesticides. And helped France win a major victory for the bees: France’s parliament voted in favor of banning all neonics – now we are fighting to get the law through the Senate and uphold this historic ban”. Boring but important: A recent report in the UK Guardian Newspaper, explains more about the Research showing how Bees are effected by Neonicotinoids: “The negative impacts found varied across different countries, leading the pesticide manufacturers to question whether the results of the research, which they funded, were real. The new research is published in the prestigious peer-review journal Science. Neonicotinoids represent a quarter of the multibillion dollar pesticide market but have been repeatedly linked to serious harm in bees in labbased studies. Bees and other pollinators are vital to food production but are in decline, in part due to loss of habitats and disease. But there had been few realistic field studies to date to address the role of the insecticides and only occasional evidence for colony-level harm in wild bees. The new research took place at 33 large farmland sites spread across the UK, Germany and Hungary. Honeybees, bumblebees and solitary bees living by insecticide-treated fields of oil seed rape were compared with those in fields where insecticides were not used in the year of the study. The survival of honeybee colonies was reduced by exposure to the insecticides in the UK and Hungary, but not in Germany, where the bees foraged far less on oil seed rape and had lower levels of disease. The reproductive success of the wild bees was cut as the
insecticide exposure increased in all three countries. The second new study published in Science, carried out on corn farms in Canada, also found crops were not the main source of neonicotinoids to which bees were exposed. Instead, the contaminated pollen came from wildflowers, as has been shown recently in the UK. “This indicates that neonicotinoids, which are water soluble, spill over from fields into the surrounding environment, where they are taken up by other plants that are very attractive to bees,” said Nadia Tsvetkov, at York University in Canada and who led the research. The Canadian research also found that the presence of realistic levels of a fungicide made the neonicotinoids twice as toxic to bees. “The effect of neonicotinoids on honey bees quickly turns from bad to worse when you add the fungicide boscalid to the mix,” said Prof Valérie Fournier, at Laval University in Canada and also part of the team. Pesticides are not tested in combination by regulators and Kerr said: “This study shows that mixtures matter.” Environmental campaigners said the new research exposed the full impact of neonicotinoids. “The horror story is clear: we have contaminated our land and water with persistent neonicotinoid pesticides,” said Matt Shardlow, CEO of the charity Buglife www.theguardian.com 11
Why are Bees important? 10 Reasons to care about saving the Bees
Bees are amongst the most important creatures to humans on Earth. These amazing insects pollinate over 80% of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. One in three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. But the role bees play in nature is likely part of a greater story. Bees have been producing honey from flowering plants for the last 10 to 20 million years, and have been mentioned in ancient writings, including the Vedic texts and Sumerian and Babylonian cuneiform. As major contributors to floral growth, bees provide nourishing habitats for animals like birds and insects and beautify the Earth. Many of the floral landscapes that we know and love in nature are made possible because of honey bee pollination.

Functional Medicine
Just what is ‘Functional Medicine’– and how can it help you? Natural remedies and alternative medicine are nothing new, but they’re definitely becoming more popular. A couple decades ago, people might have thought aromatherapy, acupuncture and cupping were strange, but people are trying them now—and seeing results, too. Emily Cardell, pictured, spoke to three local Functional Medicine practitioners.
A
ccording to the Institute for Function Medicine, “Functional Medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual”. When compared to traditional ‘conventional medicine’, it all comes down to a fundamental difference in approach. With more and more people willing to give it a chance, Health & Wellness Magazine contacted some practicing Functional Medicine doctors in Nashville.
Vitality Medical Wellness Center – Dr. Sommer White
Dr. Sommer White, “This type of medicine works because we encourage our patients that they can get better, and that they can recover from illness”.
What type of functional medicine do you specialize in? I specialize in gastrointestinal health, food sensitivities, thyroid disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders. I believe that most illness begins in the gut, so gut healing is key to improving conditions. I treat conditions like IBS, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns and SIBO, hypothyroidism and chronic fatigue.
What are the benefits? People get their lives back. So many people are prisoners to their illnesses. Resolution of physical symptoms is just the beginning. Having vitality and mental clarity and calmness are the ultimate rewards. What types of conditions are you finding it works best with? Most conditions can benefit from this type of medicine, and whether or not a person can improve their condition depends on that person. I see it work well especially for digestive disorders like chronic constipation, IBS and Inflammatory Bowel diseases.
TN Alternative Medicine – Dr. Carolyn Maxfield
What is your pricing? I have a cash-based practice. My initial visit is 90 minutes, and I take that time to get to know the person and hear their health story. We then make a detailed, customized health plan that centers around nutrition, supplements and in depthfunctional medicine testing. This visit is $365. After the initial visit I do 45-minute follow-up appointments for $175. Why do you think it works? The body is an efficient, self-supportive system that can heal itself when given the proper nutrients and when it is cleaned from toxins and toxicants. Our environment is filled with toxicants like heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and plastics that our bodies are overwhelmed with trying to deal with them. At the same time, our nutrition has become less and less optimal. This type of medicine works because we remove harmful foods and chemicals and fill the body with nutrient dense, whole, primarily plant foods. I encourage my patients to become active in their healing both physically and mentally, which is what’s needed for the body to really heal itself. This type of medicine works because we encourage our patients that they can get better, and that they can recover from illness. In functional medicine, we guide and support our patients with a positive outlook. 16
Dr. Carolyn Maxfield, “Our bodies are always communicating with us, but in our stressful and overworked world, it’s difficult to slow down and listen”. What type(s) of functional medicine do you specialize in? Our office uses muscle testing (also known as applied kinesiology) to identify the root cause of our patients’ health concerns. Muscle testing allows us to non-invasively detect illnesses and imbalances in our patients. Because our body systems are linked together with energy pathways – the quantum physics kind, not the spooky kind:) –we can assess the “weak links” in our patients’ bodies by applying pressure to various muscles and organs and glands at the same time, seeing how they respond to each other.
Functional Medicine
I am also a chiropractor! I practice a method called the Logan Basic Technique, which utilizes light force to adjust and correct spinal and pelvic distortions. When most people think of chiropractors, they think of cracking and popping, which is not for everyone! I love utilizing a gentle chiropractic method because it focuses on muscles just as much as bone structure. Stress often manifests in muscle strain, so our muscles need to be taken care of, too!
hormonal imbalances or autoimmune diseases that result in infertility. My favorite phone calls are patients letting me know they’re pregnant! It always makes me feel fulfilled and excited about what I do.
Magnolia Medical Center – Dr. David P. Morris, D.C.
What is your pricing? For muscle testing: My first appointment is 45 minutes and costs $150. The 2-week followup is 30 minutes and costs $99. Every appointment thereafter is $70. Other practitioners in our office, charges $99 for a first appointment, $75 for the 2-week followup, and $65 for every appointment after that. For chiropractic: My first appointment is $75. Every adjustment afterwards is $65. Why do you think it works? Our bodies are always communicating with us, but in our stressful and overworked world, it’s difficult to slow down and listen. Our office is able to successfully support our patients through things like infertility, auto-immune diseases, and digestion issues by taking twenty minutes to listen. After each appointment, our patients leave with a Treatment Plan comprised of natural/organic supplements (ranging from $12-$40) that will strengthen their bodies back to health. We also offer nutrition and dietary coaching, designed for each individual, to give each person’s body exactly what it needs to thrive! We have a quote in our office that says, “Most people have no idea how good their bodies are supposed to feel” and we believe that’s true! Our goal is to support each patient until they thrive. What are the benefits? One of the greatest benefits about our practice is everything we do is individualized. We assess each patient’s body and nobody walks out with the same Treatment Plan. Because we rarely outsource for blood work or lab tests, we find muscle testing to be cost-effective in the long run. The more noninvasive, the better! Lastly, our goal is prevention! We don’t want to put bandaids on symptoms and hope they go away. We target the root cause and strengthen each body from the ground up, giving it power to fight against any future illness! What types of conditions are you finding it works best with? Our office works with most every condition, but my favorite patients are women struggling with
Dr. David Morris, “The modern/western medicine system is broken and even the providers in the system know this to be true”. What type(s) of functional medicine do you specialize in? Our office specializes in complex, chronic cases. The typical patient that comes to us (not all but most of them) has been to other doctors who have been unable to find a solution to their health concerns. Our patients most often present with multiple symptoms related to thyroid health, fatigue, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, sleep issues and weight loss concerns. We use diagnostic testing and interpretation to start to understand the underlying causes of the conditions and then focus on diet, lifestyle, environment, exposure, nutrition, supplements and sometimes medicine in order to resolve the issues. Why do you think it works? Functional medicine works because the goal is to find the underlying cause of the health concern instead of just treating they symptom. The modern/ western medicine system is broken and even the providers in the system know this to be true. If someone has an acute health concern there is statistically no better treatment available than what we have to offer in our system here in the United States. However, if someone has a chronic health problem, statistically, the “healthcare” system in the US fails miserably. Doctors don’t have enough 17
time to treat patients and get to the bottom of their issues, testing is ruled by insurance benefits and treatment must fall under the “standard of care” model in order to be covered. And let’s face it, this usually means a prescription just to handle symptoms of the dysfunction seen on the surface. The underlying causes are not addressed. Functional medicine allows a competent provider to spend enough time with the patient, do the proper testing and engineer a proper treatment plan to fix the underlying causes of the problems. Even though it is quite different than what a patient would get at their usual doctor, it is what most doctors wish they could do if the system was not so flawed. What is your pricing? The good news is that functional medicine can be very affordable, but since it is not often covered by insurance, patients should expect to pay out of pocket for the expertise of a functional medicine practitioner. We consider it an investment in our own health in order to really overcome a health challenge. A 45-60 minute office visit isn’t something that fits into the framework of the insurance model, but that is what patients get in a functional medicine practice. For some, a “pay as you go” method is employed where the patient pays an office visit fee plus the cost of labs and sees the provider when they can. These visits can range from $250 - $500. Our office uses more of a membership/ partnership model where we expect to work with a patient for six months to a year and see or talk to the patient multiple times in a month. For a partnership program like this, a patient can expect an overall cost of a few thousand dollars. What are the benefits? It would be a lie for any provider to say they fix 100% of the problems that they see but I am thrilled that every day we see patients that are getting their lives back. I believe that what we offer patients is not only a treatment style that works, but also educates along the way to empower the patient to manage his or her own health. Patients are truly able to reverse the course of chronic disease. This is the reason we go to work every day. What types of conditions are you finding it works best with? The number one thing that people come to see us for is thyroid problems. We also see great results with nearly every kind of digestive issue. Autoimmune cases, diabetes, etc get great results with a function medicine approach as well.

Ashtanga Yoga
What it is: Ashtanga is a dynamic, physically demanding practice that synchronizes breath and movement to produce an internal heat designed to purify the body. Ashtanga literally means “eightlimbs” and by practicing each of the limbs all of the impurities in the body and mind are destroyed. This particular style of yoga is great for toning the body and building core strength. Where to find it: Steadfast and True Yoga 1325 3rd Ave N Nashville, TN 37208
Bikram Yoga
9 different types of Yoga you should investigate in Nashville Yoga has come a long way in the past few years. Take a look at any studio’s schedule and you’ll see so many different types of yoga, from Ashtanga yoga and Restorative yoga to Bikram yoga and Kundalini yoga. Emily Cardel (pictured) explains what they are and where you can find practitioners in the Nashville area.
W
hether you’re someone who prefers a more physically demanding class or someone who prefers an easy, relaxing, meditative class, there is a yoga class out there for you! With many different variations of the practice, as noted below, we recommend giving a few styles a try before picking one to stick with.
Aerial Yoga What it is: The “new kid on the block”, Aerial yoga combines traditional yoga with moves inspired by pilates, dance and acrobatics. It uses a hammock to allow students to perform postures that they may not ordinarily be able to attempt on the yoga mat. 20
What it is: Bikram Yoga is a form of Hatha yoga. The difference between the two involves sweat, and a lot of it. Most classes are held in heated rooms and kept at high humidity. However, Bikram yoga is not hot yoga. The Bikram practice involves repeating the same 26 poses in set cycles over a 90-minute class. The poses were chosen by founder Bikram Choudhury from classic hatha poses and are designed to “systematically move fresh, oxygenated blood to 100 percent of your body, to each organ and fiber,” according to the official Bikram yoga site. Where to find it: Hot Yoga of East Nashville (615) 678-8079
Hatha Yoga
What it is: Hatha is a Sanskrit word that means “force,” and translates to “movement or meaning.” It includes the practice of basic yoga postures combined with breathing exercises. The purpose of Hatha is to 1) help bring peace to the mind and body and 2) help prepare the body for deeper spiritual practices. The postures you do can strengthen the body and the meditations you take part it can help focus and calm the mind. You may not work up a sweat in a hatha yoga class, but you will end up leaving class feeling looser and more relaxed. Where to find it: Lotus Blooming Yoga (615) 915-0798
Yoga
Hot Yoga
What it is: Hot Yoga is a style of yoga performed in hot (usually over 100 degrees) and humid conditions. Bikram yoga is popular within the hot yoga community. Many people find hot yoga to be a great stress reliever and a challenge, both mentally and physically. Because of its intensity and potential to cause heat-related illness, hot yoga isn’t for everyone. Be sure you check with your doctor before trying hot yoga if you have any health concerns. Where to find it: Hot Yoga of East Nashville (615) 678-8079
Kundalini Yoga
What it is: Kundalini, in Hinduism refers to a form of primal energy said to be located at the base of the spine. Kundalini Yoga is an uplifting blend of spiritual and physical practices, Kundalini Yoga combines movement, dynamic breathing techniques, meditation, and the chanting of mantras. The goal of this specific practice is to build physical vitality and increase consciousness.

Learn to cook the Holistic way
Laura Lea Bryant on her cookery classes: “show up, relax and enjoy yourself”.
L
Laura Lea Bryant is a certified holistic chef, with her grass-roots planted firmly here in Nashville. Laura Lea earned her certification from the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City in 2013, a nationally-recognized culinary program that teaches classic chef skills, as well as courses in food and healing. Now she is running a series of exclusive cookery classes for people who want to know more about cooking in a healthy and holistic way.
aura Lea fell in love with wholefoods cooking, when she noticed how it dramatically decreased her anxiety symptoms—heart palpitations, agoraphobia and panic attacks. She became smitten with the concept that what we eat can affect every aspect of our life, not just our physical appearance. Upon graduating, she immediately moved back to Nashville, driven to share this message with her home town. A Laura Lea Balanced Cooking Class is an experience where community, conversation and delicious, healthy food come together. Chef Laura Lea began teaching these classes when she realized that there was an element of connection missing in her business. During the first few years of growth, Laura Lea focused on creating recipes for her blog and sharing on social media, but she knew that the true magic of home-cooked food is the company with whom it is shared. She tentatively began teaching small groups of 4-5 people, but the classes quickly became so popular that she increased the frequency and size to accommodate demand. During each of these two-hour demonstration-style classes, you will learn how to create nutritious dishes that use accessible ingredients, achievable
techniques and which should please every member of your family. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to ask Chef Laura Lea any questions you might have about wellness and home-cooking (so feel free to prepare a few in advance!). With approximately 14 people from all over Nashville and some from other parts of the country, you will likely come away with new friends as well! Laura Lea offers a range of class themes, such Vegan and Vegetarian Dinners, Make Once, Eat All Week, Healthy Thanksgiving Feast and Healthy Holiday Desserts. She also makes sure to work around any dietary restrictions or preferences that you might have. The classes take place in Laura Lea’s work/live loft in the up-and-coming Wedgwood Houston neighborhood. Your only job is to show up, relax and enjoy wine (or water!) and appetizers while Laura Lea cooks and chats. At the end of the class, you will enjoy a meal of what she has prepared! Bonus: Laura Lea leaves containers for take-home leftovers, if there are any. If you have any questions about the LL Balanced Cooking Classes, feel free to email Chef Laura Lea: lauralea@llbalanced. com. She would love to see you there! 22

Historic Nashville
Some Nashville gems for you to visit Leslie Losey (pictured), Executive Director of Avohealth Wellness Partners suggest any of these four Nashville historic places should be on everyone’s list to visit.
A
s Nashville continues to blossom, it is easy to lose sight of the original landmarks and inhabitants that made the city the gem that it is today. From musicians to art, Nashville has a lot of history and many really cool places to visit that shares some of that history with visitors and locals alike. Want to learn more about Nashville’s abundant history? Here are four places that you don’t want to miss out on while you’re in the city!
1. Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art
This stunning garden and the estate that sits upon it has been around since 1932. It is the estate of Mable and Leslie Cheek, whom were the original owners of this uniquely built home. The house was crafted and designed by an architect from New York, which he completed in three years. With thirty-six rooms in total, an elevator and even a hidden staircase, the estate is definitely an astonishing sight to see. Currently, there are twelve different flourishing gardens to visit on site that change seasonally, and tours are offered inside of the estate as well. Ready to discover one of Nashville’s most striking tour spots? Check out Cheekwood Botanical Garden TuesdaySunday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
2. Parthenon at Centennial Park Many people are familiar with Centennial Park, but there is much more to see at this location than just the beautiful landscape. There is actually a museum
tucked away in the basement of this stunning replica of the original Greek Parthenon. From an art room featuring 63 inimitable paintings, to a 42-foot statue of a well-known Greek Goddess, this self-guided tour is one that you don’t want to miss out on. Not to mention, it is insanely cheap for the tickets to take the tour. Located just west of downtown Nashville, the museum is open to the public to tour most every day of the week before 4:30 p.m.
3. Violins of Hope
Nashville is home to one of the most precious instruments from the Holocaust that tell a truly remarkable story. Violins of Hope is an assemblage that holds the memories of some of the fiercest people to walk the earth: the Jewish musicians who played the violins while being held in concentration camps during this horrific time period. The Nashville Symphony is home 23
to one of the thirty-three violins that were able to be restored, and uses the violin during special performances. To learn more about the violins and to read about the story behind each carefully crafted instrument, visit violinsofhopenashville.com or visit the Nashville Symphony located in downtown Nashville. The organization holds events year-round to support the collection and to educate the public more on the importance of music during the Holocaust.
4. Musician’s Hall of Fame and Museum
Long known as “Nashville’s Best Kept Secret”, the Musician’s Hall of Fame and Museum can be found in the historic Nashville Municipal Auditorium located in the heart of Music City. Nashville is known mostly for its country music production, but this specific site honors music and musicians of all genres. Not only does it focus on the artists, but has a display of the instruments that these artists played making some of the greatest hits in music history. The museum focuses in on teaching its guests about the true talent of the artists and more specifically, the people behind the scene of creating and producing the biggest hits that are often forgotten about. Not sold on visiting yet? The museum even has interactive exhibits where guests can do everything from learn to play drums with Ringo Star to singing some classic karaoke songs on an open stage! Leslie Losey is the co-founder of a corporate wellness company in Nashville, TN known as Avohealth Wellness Partners. After having struggled with an autoimmune disease most of her early life, Leslie is now on a mission to help others gain their health back through the power of whole foods. In her spare time, Leslie enjoys one-on-one nutrition coaching, spending time with her son, and reading the latest updates in the health and wellness world
Legal Advice
Truck accident injuries (What to do?)
are still fresh in their minds. You can be assured the insurance company adjuster for the trucking company will talk to all of the available witnesses and try to sway them towards their version of the facts. Therefore, it is important that you be represented so that your representatives and investigators can also talk to the witnesses and pin down what they saw and observed while it is fresh in their minds. The vehicles need to be promptly photographed. Also, crash data on the vehicles needs to be obtained before they are repaired or sold for scrap and no longer available. The accident site needs to be inspected and photographed before skid marks fade and evidence disappears. Middle Tennessee has three major interstates that crisscross in Nashville. Thus, there is an extensive amount of interstate trucking through Middle Tennessee and serious tractor-trailer accidents are, unfortunately, a relatively common occurrence.

Accidents involving tractor-trailer trucks and large commercial trucks can cause devastating personal injuries. If you or a loved one have been injured in an accident involving a tractor-trailer truck or a large commercial vehicle, it is very important that you obtain prompt legal assistance.
T
here are specialized laws and regulations regarding the trucking industry. There are regulations regarding hours of operation and hours of duty. Many truck accidents result from drivers being fatigued and driving in excess of the regulated hours of duty. Quite often electronic tracking data is available to determine the true hours of operation and movement of the tractortrailer. If you delay in getting legal representation, that data is often lost, never to be regained. This data is only kept for a limited period of time. This data is often crucial to reconstructing an accident and proving liability. The loss of this data would make it difficult to challenge the claimed hours of operation and duty. Also, the mandatory logs of operation are required to be kept for six months only. Six months after the accident, this information is generally no longer available. In Tennessee, there is a one-year statute of limitations for all personal injuries.
Experts Gather and Download Data Additionally, there is often available Electronic Control Module data or ECM data that will show vital operating information on the vehicles involved in the accident. Again, one must act promptly to obtain this information. We have access to experts who can download this computer data and preserve the same. This data can have information on speeds, braking, and operation of both vehicles. If the tractor-trailer or commercial truck is repaired and back on the road, it will be too late to obtain this data. At the accident scene, there is generally very important physical information including skid marks, gouge marks, debris and other physical evidence. It is important that all physical evidence and data be photographed, mapped and preserved while the data is still fresh and available. Also, as in all accidents, it is important to talk to the witnesses promptly while the events 24

Dieting
Thinking About Starting the Ketogenic Diet? Read This First Rethink Your Healthy Fats
Ah, the Keto diet. It seems as if everyone and their mother is doing it nowadays, but are they doing it the right way? Probably not. Many people make mistakes on the Keto diet which causes some pretty unpleasant symptoms. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to eliminate the unwanted effects of this diet. Leslie Losey (pictured), Executive Director of Avohealth Wellness Partners explains how. What is the Ketogenic Diet? There are many different styles of the keto diet, but the general goal is to get the majority of your calories from dietary fats so that you turn your body into a fat burning machine. The keto diet allows your body to use ketones for energy, which are delivered from the mitochondrial matrix of liver cells when the body is falling short on glucose production due to lack of carbohydrates. Sounds scary, right? Consider this: being in a ketogenic state can actually improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and can even improve cognitive functioning.
Many people question where their fats should come from on a ketogenic diet, and that is indeed a good question to ask! Most of your fats should ideally be coming from plant sources. Avocados, raw nuts, seeds, olives, coconut oil, olive oil, grass fed beef, and fatty fish such as salmon and tuna are all great choices because of their high nutrient content. Wait, but isn’t dairy allowed on the keto diet? This is where things get interesting. Dairy, in all of its forms, is generally allowed on a ketogenic diet, but dairy can cause widespread inflammation thanks to lactase, casein and whey. Many people are sensitive to all of these, which is why dairy may not be the best choice for this diet while trying to combat inflammation. If you choose to have dairy, do not make it a staple in your diet, but an occasional treat. Processed oils such as: canola, soy, corn, safflower, cottonseed, grapeseed and peanut oil should also be avoided due to GMO qualities and inflammation producing PUFA’s (polyunsaturated fats). When these oils are heated, they become toxic to our bodies, so it is best to avoid them!
Drink all the Water! During the ketogenic diet, water should become your best friend. There are several reasons why it is absolutely essential to up your water intake while eating an extremely low carbohydrate diet. It is pertinent that you keep your electrolytes in balance! Many of those trying out the keto diet often give up because of the unpleasant side effects that they experience during the first couple of weeks such as dehydration, leg cramps, and dizziness. However, these symptoms are not actually caused by the lack of carbohydrates but by lack of hydration and proper electrolyte restoration. It is ideal to drink to thirst, and then some. Drinking enough water can ensure that the kidneys are flushed and that your cells are properly hydrated for max functioning. Add some organic lemon juice and some sea salt to your water 25
to help balance your electrolytes and say goodbye to those nasty “keto flu” symptoms!
Consider Magnesium Supplementation It is generally a good idea to take a high-quality multivitamin on any diet, but there is one mineral that you should especially focus on during the keto diet. Many people tend to lose magnesium through urine excretion on keto because of lack of glycogen stores. Magnesium is responsible for maintaining proper nerve and muscle functioning, heart health, and keeping the immune system in tip-top shape. Without magnesium, you may experience leg cramps, anxiety, and insomnia. Magnesium citrate is the most bioavailable form of the mineral, and can be found at most health food stores. You can take the mineral alone, or choose a high-quality multivitamin that provides magnesium in optimal doses.
The Takeaway Starting a keto diet may seem overwhelming, but once you start reaping the benefits, you will be glad that you decided to give it a try. By keeping your healthy fats in check, drinking enough water to ensure proper hydration (don’t forget the sea salt and lemon for electrolyte balance), and supplementing with magnesium you can be ensured that the ketogenic diet will be a pleasurable experience. Your ketogenic diet should be made up of mostly plants and healthy fats, with some moderate amounts of high-quality proteins like grass-fed beef, pastured eggs and chicken, and wild caught fish. Keep your carbohydrates to a minimum by keeping them under 15% of your daily calorie intake. Most of your carbs should come from leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and other low-carb veggies, but you are allowed to have some berries too, as long as they fit into your daily carbohydrate intake! Happy “Keto’ing”!
Children’s Mental Health
Try this non drug approach to your Child’s mental problems Sheri Rowney (pictured) looks at a therapy available in Nashville that has had excellent results with improving children’s mental challenges in particular ADHD.
W
ith the latest figures showing that 14% of children ages 4 to 17 nationwide and over 16% here in Tennessee are diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD, parents are scrambling for information and resources to help their child. Many struggle with having to medicate their children with stimulants which helps the ADD/ADHD symptoms but can cause other more harmful and long lasting side effects. There is a safe, quick and easy alternative. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) can be as effective as medication without the harmful side effects. ADD/ADHD is generally associated with the inability to focus at school; not being able to sit still and to pay attention. Often these children are reprimanded for their behavior; not being able to sit in their seats, fidgeting when they are supposed to be still; causing disruptions at inappropriate times. These children tend to struggle with their grades because they are unable to focus on what the teacher is saying and are often labeled with a learning disability when in fact they are often times quite bright; they just can’t focus in the traditional setting. Kids with ADD/ ADHD are often ostracized from their peers as they are labeled the “bad kids”. They can be loud and disorganized; they often interrupt when others are talking. Sometimes they seem to not care that they are so disruptive. They may not be invited to parties and play dates because of their behavior. No matter how hard they try; they just can’t seem to be able to do what is expected of them. Not only does this effect their educational needs but it also effects their self-confidence; they often feel like they don’t measure up and will never be as successful as the other kids. This lack of confidence causes long term effects as their self-image diminishes, they often quit trying and just resign themselves to thinking they’ll never be able to measure up so it’s not worth the effort. For the last 35 years there has been a new nonmedicated, non-invasive option for not only treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, but also in changing the brain so that the client can focus better, interact
better and make better choices. Called Low Energy Neurofeedback has been in continual development since 1990. With a success rate of over 90%, it uses a small radio frequency to disrupt the brain waves and allows them to reset back into a more effective, natural pattern. Over a period of just a few sessions clients start to feel more focused, calmer and more able to make better decisions. Sessions only take a few minutes a week and results are long lasting. This amazingly successful therapy is available at Harmonized Brain Centers. Here we combine LENS with Life Coaching, introducing skills and habit changes to go along with the more efficient brain activity. This integrative approach sets your child up for success in a natural and effective way.
LENS is not only used for treating ADD/ADHD but also for people suffering with migraines, TBI, anxiety, depression, brain fog, chemo fog and memory issues. The brain is an amazing organ with the ability to change to become more efficient and effective with just a little help.
Here is a testimony of a very happy family of a child with ADHD who came to see us at Harmonized Brain Centers: I brought my 14 year old grandson to Harmonized Brain Centers after trying 3 different medications for his ADD. They all caused side effects and changed his personality so that not only were we dealing with his lack of attention and focus but were also seeing anger issues, weight loss and he couldn’t fall asleep at night. He was able to stay focused better at school but was still unmotivated and we weren’t seeing many good changes. We were desperate for another alternative and after spending lots of time and research, we decided to call HBC. Our experience there was nothing short of a miracle. We started right after the first grading period was over. He had 2 C’s, 3 D’s and 2 F’s. He had pretty much given up on even trying and his attitude was awful. After just 2 sessions we noticed he was calmer and nicer at home to his brothers and didn’t seem to fight going to school so much anymore. He was more motivated to do things around the house when asked and started doing much better in basketball. We were anxious to see how his grades would be and were thrilled when the second grading period ended with an A, 4 B’s and 2C’s! His confidence was back, his attitude changed and the whole family dynamics changed with him. We couldn’t be more thrilled or satisfied with Harmonized Brain Centers. I would recommend Harmonized Brain Centers to anyone looking for help with ADD. We are so glad we found them. For more information, please call Harmonized Brain Centers of Tennessee at (615) 331-8762. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to discuss an option that you might not have known even existed. Our goal is for your child to be the best they can be; we would love to help!

Heal yourself
70% of illnesses don’t need treatment “The U.S. spends more on health care than any other country, but what we get for these significant resources falls short in terms of access to care, affordability, and coordination,” said Commonwealth Fund President Dr. David Blumenthal. Is there a way that we can take charge of our health without always relying on external help? Sadhguru, yogi, mystic, and the foremost authority on yoga says by paying the required attention to ourselves, we can become the best expert for our own wellbeing.
Sadhguru: Modern healthcare systems make a lot of people seek outside help even when it is not necessary. It has become a culture, but more than that, it is a huge commercial activity. Out of a nineteen trillion dollar economy in the United States, over three trillion dollars is healthcare. That is not a good sign at all. A whole lot of procedures, therapies and surgeries are largely unnecessary, but they happen because it is good for the economy – you have to keep it going. An Expert Opinion
There are only certain things which need external intervention. How to distinguish? First, you must do everything possible. If that still does not work, then you seek outside help. This may look completely out of the purview of modern societies, but if you pay enough attention – suppose your hand is paining – it does not take a great expert to tell you this particular muscle is swollen, so this needs rest. If you just observe, you know which needs rest, which needs activity. But no one wants to use their mind; they want an expert opinion on this. I am telling you that you are the expert, because the doctor never knows where it hurts and how much it hurts. He knows it only by what you say or by poking you. You know best. But if you are living in such a way that the only attention is to the surface, the make-up, not to
the body, then someone has to tell you which muscle should rest and which needs exercise. If you pay attention, you know. Even if you know, you may not do it because you are lazy, you do not have time or something else. That is different. But if you pay enough attention, everyone is capable of knowing this. You do not need anyone to tell you.
70% of Ailments Don’t Need Treatment
Of course there are things that you do not know, for which you need an expert to tell you what is going wrong with you. If your kidney is malfunctioning, you may not be capable of knowing. You cannot figure out why the symptoms are happening. Then a doctor comes in. But for a whole lot of problems that people have on a day-to-day basis, you do not need any external help. If you ask me, seventy to eighty percent of all therapies and sixty percent of the surgeries could be junked in the world and people will still be okay if they are willing to eat properly and do a few things about their wellbeing. On an average, I would say, seventy percent of the ailments do not need treatment – they need discipline. About thirty percent need treatment and external intervention. If seventy percent of the treatment requirements in the world disappear because people are doing the right things with themselves, then we can say that humanity is healthy at an optimum level. A few percentage points may vary this way or that way, allowing some room for the lazy and the ignorant, but all others can fix themselves with a little attention and effort. 27
Whenever something is a little wrong with me, I always ask a doctor, “Okay, what is it?” They tell me, “This, this, this, you must take this medicine, that medicine.” I do not take that medicine, but I do something else. People around me get frustrated, “Then why do you go to a doctor?” I just want a second opinion. I know this is what is happening with me, but I am also checking. I am not so arrogant to simply think this is it. So I just check, but do I have to do what they tell me? No. I will do what works best for me.
A Natural Aspiration for Health
This requires a certain level of attention and awareness about oneself. Above all, this excessive concern about health is an illness in itself. If you see the number of books and the amount of printed pages on the planet about health, particularly in the United States of America, health seems to be such a big fetish. That itself is ill-health. Should you not be concerned? Yes, you should be. But you must understand that health is a natural aspiration for every cell in your body. It is not an intention you have to create in your mind. Health becomes an intention in your mind only if you are eating wrong, living wrong, drinking wrong, breathing wrong, doing everything wrong. Now you have to hold this intention, “I want to be healthy, I want to be healthy.” If you are doing all these things properly, you do not have to think, “I want to be healthy.” Every cell in your body is striving and wanting to be healthy. Just leave them alone. Do not cancer them up. Just leave them alone, and they will do their work. But we are living in a world where we may be breathing things that we should not breathe, drinking things that we should not drink, eating things unconsciously that we should not eat. A little more care may be needed because we are living in a poisonous world today. We have poisoned everything that we consume. But health is a natural aspiration of the body and every cell in the body. It is not something that you have to take up as a mission. Sadhguru will be personally offering Inner Engineering in San Mateo, November 3-4, at the San Mateo Event Center. As Sadhguru rarely conducts this program, this is a unique opportunity to learn Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, a lifetransforming practice from him. ’SmilE’ you’re in safe hands! The state’s first 3D SMILE procedure was performed at the internationally renowned Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center in Nashville, TN, USA. It represents the first major advancement in laser vision technology in 25 years.

S
MILE stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction. During a SMILE procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise short pulses is used to make a small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue, which is then removed. SMILE has several advantages over LASIK; it is minimally invasive and no flap is needed. The laser incision is much smaller (only 5 millimeters), compared to 20 millimeters for LASIK. Postsurgical dry eye issues are also reduced, compared to LASIK. Margaret Coleman is a manager of Nashville, TN’s world-famous Bluebird Cafе, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville.” She has had poor vision all her life (even worse than legally blind). Ms. Coleman became the state’s first patient to receive 3D SMILE
and she is thrilled about her newfound freedom from her dependence on glasses and contacts!
About Dr. Ming Wang: He is a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), a philanthropist, and Kiwanis’ Nashvillian of the Year. Dr .Wang is one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He is the CEO of Aier-USA, a new U.S. – China healthcare venture that brings investments from China to build eye clinics here and create jobs in the U.S. As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras – China’s Cultural Revolution – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his 23 28
own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket, where against all odds, he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks and an article in the world-renowned journal “Nature,” holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D KAMRA (45+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (50+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the recipient of the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Chinese American Physicians. Dental Health
Is there a correlation between Heart disease and Periodontal disease? Many people are unaware that having periodontal disease (the destruction of gum tissue and bone that hold our teeth in place) can affect your overall health. Periodontal disease is one of the most common infections. Periodontal disease is not only the number one reason people lose teeth; it can also affect the health of your body! Dr. Jaime Romero (pictured) of Solace Oral Surgery explains why.
While there is still much research to be done in order to fully understand the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases, research has shown that infections in the mouth can wreak havoc elsewhere in the body.
Regular Dental Check-Ups are Key To ensure a healthy, disease-free mouth, we recommend the importance of regular dental checkups and cleanings, which include a periodontal evaluation. Also, diligent home care and a proper diet can help reduce plaque and bacteria in the mouth. Remember the mouth body connection! Taking care of your oral health can contribute to your overall medical health! To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392 or visit us at www.SolaceOralSurgery.com.
Patient Testimonial:
What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection, and in its earliest stages, it’s called gingivitis. It starts when an accumulation of plaque (a colony of bacteria, food debris, and saliva) is NOT regularly removed from the gums and teeth. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins/acids that irritate and infect the gums, eventually destroying the jaw bone that supports the teeth. When periodontal disease is not treated, it can eventually lead to tooth loss!
Possible Effects of Periodontal Bacteria There are numerous studies that have looked into the correlation between gum disease and major medical conditions. These studies suggest
people with periodontal disease are at a greater risk of systemic disease. They also indicate that periodontal disease can allow oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs, beginning new infections. Research suggests that periodontal bacteria in the blood stream can: • Contribute to the development of heart disease • Increase the risk of stroke • Compromise the health of those that have diabetes or respiratory diseases • Increase a woman’s risk of having a preterm, low-birth weight baby 29
“Dr. Romero is a caring and knowledgeable practitioner. He legitimately cares about each and every patient which really does mean a lot. He spends plenty of time to answer patient’s questions and helps them understand their problem and how it may be treated. Do you have lower back problems? Dr. Taleghani (pictured) and his staff of well-trained and knowledgeable Physicians at Pinnacle Surgical Partners will guide you through your options and help construct a plan of action to repair and heal your back, neck and spine. The SI Joint May Be Why
The sacroiliac joint, or SI joint, might be the source of your problem. The SI joint is on each side of your lower spine, between the sacrum (the triangular bone) and the ilium of the pelvis, which are surrounded and reinforced by strong ligaments. ]The sacrum does not have much motion, unlike most parts in the vertebral column, since it has a fixed association with the pelvis. The pelvis consists of two long bones called the iliac bones. Ligaments are in charge of holding the sacrum and the iliac bones together. The SI joint performs as a shockabsorbing structure. Since their job is to support your upper body weight, pressure is applied when standing or walking. The stress in the joint may bring about cartilage wear and tear, thus eventually producing arthritis. Sacroiliac pain is generally more common in young and middle age women.
How to Avoid Unnecessary Lumbar Spine Surgery
You can harm or bother the SI joint either through trauma or every day wear and tear. When this happens, it can cause pain and discomfort starting from the lower back down through the buttock to the upper leg. It is even common for SI joint problems to mimic sciatica or lumbar disc herniation. A highly trained and skilled neurosurgeon will work with you to determine the issue and offer treatment options for a symptomatic SI joint, without making you go through unnecessary lumbar spine surgery. In fact, patients who have had lumbar surgery in the past can develop issues with their SI joint.
SI Joint Pain Can be Caused by Either:
• Too much movement — hypermobility or instability. The pain is typically felt in the lower back and/or hip and may transmit into groin area. • Too little movement — hypomobility or fixation. The pain is generally felt on one side of the low back or buttocks, and can spread down the leg.
The pain usually remains above the knee, but at times pain can extend to the ankle or foot. The pain is similar to sciatica, or pain that radiates down the sciatic nerve and is caused by a radiculopathy.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Option
The SI joint can be confirmed as the cause of your symptoms through examination, X-rays, CT-scan, MRI and/or an injection. A sacroiliac joint block injection anesthetic can aid in diagnosing where the pain is located. The trained surgeon can deliver the injection using fluoroscopic guidance, ‘ live X-ray guidance, to verify accurate placement of the needle in the SI joint. The physician injects this numbing solution into the joint to see if the pain is relieved. If so, that confirms that it is in fact the SI joint that is causing the issues. Some non-operative treatment options that might be available in your case include physical therapy, chiropractic manipulations, oral medications, and/or injection therapy. 30
If surgery needs to be considered, Dr. Taleghani is trained in a minimally invasive surgical option for SI joint fixation/fusion that typically involves three small titanium implants surgically inserted across the SI joint. This procedure can be done through a small incision with duration being about an hour. Chris Taleghani, M.D., M.B.A. Dr. Taleghani is a board certified neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery and complex spine and brain conditions. He received his Medical Degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his Neurosurgery Residency training at Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Taleghani also earned his MBA from George Washington University while completing medical school.
