This month’s Healthy recipe by Laura Lea

Baked pumpkin spice donuts Total time: 48 mins. 7 Donuts Ingredients: Dry ingredients • 1 ¼ cups certified GF instant oats • ¾ cup blanched almond flour • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Erin Oprea, will be one of the stars of the new Nashville Health & Wellness Festival

To be part of this comprehensive showcase, call 615 678 5683.Or go to: www.nashvillehealthandwellnessfest.com The organizers say it will “be more than an Expo-it’s a Festival celebrating the road to good Health for everyone… with Demonstrations, Talks, Workshops, Performances for all ages. Alternative, Complementary, Traditional, Functional, Holistic therapists and providers are welcomed” Booth prices start at just $195 if booked before October 31st.

Coconut butter glaze • ½ cup melted coconut butter (not oil) • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar

Directions: DONUTS 1. Add instant oats to a high powered blender or food processor and pulse until it forms a flour consistency. I personally prefer using the blender because I think it creates a finer consistency. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place a 6-donut silicon mold on a baking sheet. Spray mold with olive oil or coconut oil spray or grease with any fat of choice. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together wet ingredients. Pour wet ingredients into dry and stir until thoroughly combined. Fill donut milks approximately 3/4 of the way full. If you fill them more, they’ll break when you try to get them out. 3. You will have some batter leftover after filling all 6 donuts. You can either make a 7th donut after the first batch comes out OR, what I like to do, make two muffins in cupcake tins. Bake donuts for 17-18 minutes, or slightly firm to touch but still with some give (they may may seem underdone but I promise they will firm up!) Allow to cool 15 minutes before loosening the edges with a butter knife and removing from the molds. Dip donuts into coconut glaze and continue to cool on a slotted rack. I suggest putting parchment paper under the rack to catch excess glaze. Once completely cooled, donuts will keep tightly sealed on the counter for 48 hours in the fridge for 5 days. If refrigerating, I suggest reheating in a 350 degree oven for just 3 minutes or until slightly warm to touch.

Harper, Program Director of The Butterfly Institute and founder of You Can Heal You, told Health & Wellness, “After seven years of suffering and countless hospital visits, I had lost hope

Wet ingredients • 2 large eggs (room temperature) • ½ cup coconut sugar • ¼ cup avocado oil • ½ cup pumpkin puree • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

after exhausting allopathic treatments, to no avail. It took me being open to gentler healing therapies, which helped me realize the power of holistic medicine. My passion for TBI is founded on the conviction to provide education and access to all integrative modalities under one stellar facility that will support people’s birth right to a happy, healthy life.” The mission of the Butterfly Institute is to provide preventive and integrative healthcare to all that request it and make it accessible to all who need it. “Our vision is to build a faith-based, ecologically sustainable wellness and research campus, featuring the latest in renewable resources”, says Harper. To learn more, visit www.butterflyinstitute.org

GLAZE 1. To melt coconut butter, I suggest adding 1 inch water to a small sauce pot. Bring water to a simmer and add coconut butter jar directly to pot (ONLY if it is a glass jar). Allow to sit for 10 minutes while water is simmer, until you can stir easily with a spoon. Combine coconut butter with cinnamon and coconut sugar and whisk to incorporate.

5 local Haunted Houses Worth Screaming About

Nutrition for a Healthy Life

Detoxing with a Fermented Foods Fast By Karina Hammer, Certified Holistic Wellness Coach

Whether you’re afraid of axe murders, clowns, chainsaws, needles, nuns, tight spaces, or just the unknown of what lurks in the shadows, Nashville has plenty of haunted houses willing to bring your fears to life. Check out five some of our favorites below!

L

ast year, I committed to a 27 day juice fast during my birthday month. It was awesome! I felt clear, energized and connected. So, this year I wanted to do it again. However, I decided to make it a more spiritual fast and do it for 40 days and add fermented foods to my cleanse. You may be asking, what are fermented foods? Fermented foods contain probiotics, which are great for digestion, as they fill your gut with healthy bacteria and balance its microbiome. Some examples of fermented foods are kombucha, yogurt, kefir, miso, sauerkraut, kimchi, kavass, and tempeh. You can ferment just about any vegetable. My husband has been so sweet and thoughtful during my cleanse! He has fermented cauliflower, carrots, green beans, and napa cabbage. It was easy, delicious and great for my digestion, brain and immune health!

of bad bacteria, so make sure to listen to your body and don’t overdo it.

Dead Land Haunted Woods Dead Land Scream Park is a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience with four attractions. The Portal and The Curse trails will walk you along the dark woods with many scares along the way. The new Crypt attraction will take you through the grave sites and its residents in a manner you will not soon forget! Also new are the Freak Out Escape games. These are designed to twist your mind, challenging you to puzzle your way to freedom. Grab your pals and check out all they have to offer. Oh, and be prepared to be scared out of your mind! 7040 Murfreesboro Road 37090 Lebanon , TN Phone: (615) 519-3116

My focus during these 40 days is to get really clear (body, mind & spirit) and live in alignment with God’s will. I will be doing a juice/liquid fast, including fermented foods, and will be reading the Bible daily in search of healing bible verses. It is your choice of what you would like to fast from. It may be bread, sugar, alcohol, coffee, social media, or watching tv. Fasting isn’t about giving up something we enjoy. There isn’t any real spiritual value in giving up chocolate or soft drinks. The point of fasting is that we give up something that may distract us to help us pay better attention to our deeper hungers and desires.

Did you know that at least 70 percent of our immune system is in the gut? It’s true. One of the biggest influencers in immune func-tion is the gut microbiome.

Are you asking, “How do I get started?” Do you need help discerning if detoxing or fasting is right for you? You’re invited to schedule a com-plimentary 30 minute assessment with Karina at www.karinahammer.com.

While fermented foods are packed with nutrition, too much of a good thing can bring some not so appetizing sideeffects. Turns out that too much good bacteria in your body actually causes the same negative reaction as an excess

PERSONAL ADVICE: ASK DR. LISA

Staying Connected when living with chronic pain

C

hronic pain affects one in three Americans and is the No. 1 cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Chronic Pain Association. The burden of living with it and helping with it can put an enormous strain on even the happiest marriages and strongest relationships. Chronic pain has a ripple effect — not only does it disrupt your life and force you to manage pain, it also changes your personal relationships. Part of pain management involves your accepting of these changes and using them to form better and closer relationships with the ones you love. By learning to better cope, you will be able to manage pain and keep friends and family closer. Finding strategies and ways to cope with chronic pain are key to staying close to loved ones. Here are a few ways to stay connected: Balance communication. People in your life need to know how you are feeling. Although staying silent may seem like a good idea this will only make others feel distant from you. But sharing too much can cause loved ones to feel overwhelmed, helpless, or depressed. Try to find the right communication balance for with each person and how you relate to that person in your life. Take on manageable responsibilities. If you find yourself unable to perform certain chores that were once your responsibility, replace them with new ones you can perform. This keeps you an active and contributing member of your family. Chronic pain, while a great impediment to your quality of life, does not mean you should cease to be active or participate in life to the degree you are able. And ask others for help. Giving your loved ones a chance to help you in some way can make them feel closer to you and doesn’t mean you are weak. Often others want to help but aren’t sure how to offer without fear of offending. Consider others perspective. It can feel almost impossible to consider others while we are in pain because we are so focused on our own discomfort. But partners of those undergoing chronic pain

management face incredible challenges of their own. A spouse may also have to take on more household and parenting responsibilities as the person living with chronic pain becomes less able to function. Financial stress due to medical bills and decreased income can also place additional stress on the relationship. Discuss your sexuality with your spouse or partner. Intimate relations with a spouse can be difficult, depending on the source and intensity of the pain. Although chronic pain does need to signal an end to intimacy it can mean that more planning is needed. Make plans that fit into medication schedules and daily pain. Avoid canceling plans with family and friends – and friends – be persistent! People living with chronic pain often withdraw from relationships outside their immediate family, which can lead to distance from other family members and friends. Don’t let chronic pain keep you from interacting with friends. Canceling plans can be disappointing for all concerned, so if you can manage some level of activity with your pain, you should. If you are a friend of someone in chronic pain realize that your attempts to get together may be rejected if the person is experiencing a pain flare-up or has suffered a decrease in self-esteem as a result of the illness. Patience and persistence is a key element in keeping these important relationships. Although there is no cure for chronic pain there are ways of managing symptoms so that relationships are more fulfilling. If you or someone you know need help with managing chronic pain or the impacts pain is having on important relationships contact:

What…Sunbathing can help with Cancer? According to World Health Organization, Sunbathing can dramatically reduce the risk of several types of cancers, autoimmune diseases, bone diseases, type 1 diabetes, depression, and, in proper doses, can even reduce the risk of melanoma, a meta-analysis of sun-relateddisease studies finds.” Only one thousandth of a percent of the global population gets melanoma each yearmany scientists are concerned that the public campaigns to protect people from the sun are doing more harm than good.

The truth is, “A much larger annual disease burden of 3.3 billion disabilityadjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide is caused by underexposure to the sun, the organization says. DALYs measure how much a person’s expectancy of healthy life is reduced by premature death or disability caused by disease.” Say WHO. To learn more about the health benefits of sunbathing, please type the following in to your web browser: https://returntonow.net/2018/04/ 13/7-reasons-to-soak-up-more-sun/.

The benefits of extra Virgin Olive oil According to Cynthia Sass, one of Health’s contributing editors and a New York Times best-selling author: ”Antioxidant EVOO is a true superfood.” “Not only has it been shown to help ward off Cancer, type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, and strokes, but it’s also proved itself to reduce brain and body inflammation, protect brain function and memory, and help regulate blood sugar and insulin levels! 1) Extra Virgin Olive oil vinaigrette Sass recommends one tablespoon of EVOO paired with balsamic vinegar, mixed with one teaspoon of ground mustard and one teaspoon of Italian herbs. Top with fresh squeezed lemon juice or minced garlic. 2) Tahini Sass adds, “Tahini makes the perfect base for a salad dressing, especially when it’s seasoned.” She suggest two tablespoons of tahini thinned with half to one tablespoon of water (depending on the texture

you desire), mixed with one teaspoon of fresh squeezed lemon juice, a half teaspoon of minced garlic, and a dash cayenne pepper. 3) Pesto Sass believes that pesto makes for the perfect salad dressing when it’s made with EVOO and other healthy ingredients. Pair your salad greens and veggies with a small dollop of pesto, place it in a seal tight container and give it a shake. After, top the mixture with your lean protein of choice and a small portion of healthy carbs – like quinoa, sweet potato, or fresh fruit. Then you’re ready to roll.

Medical Marijuana

Some illnesses and disorders that may benefit from taking Marijuana: • Antibiotic-resistant infections • Immuno-suppressive • Rheumatoid arthritis • Psoriasis • PTSD • Anxiety attacks • Vascular and muscle relaxing

• Diabetes • Alcoholism • Spasm • MS (Multiple Sclerosis) • Epilepsy • Chronic pain • schizophrenia

Cons of Marijuana use:

The Pros and Cons of (Medical) Marijuana

It is used as medicine because of its effects in the brain and body. It could help you but used unconsidered and unconditionally and without proper advice could cause adverse effects. • It may increase Anxiety. Depends on the quality of weed, the preposition of the consumer and social environment • In some cases it can cause Schizophrenia (If the user is not used to it and the variety has a too high concentration of THC. CBD works against Schizophrenia and decrease it) • Depression (It may cause it also because of the preposition of the user and a lot of other reasons. But as stated in pros it also can help for depression.) • Psychosis (In very few cases, experts believe the cause of psychosis to take in conjunction with marijuana, but only as a trigger which already slumbered in the affected. • It may temporarily affect the short-term memory • Paranoia – Not simply caused from the effects of marijuana. It is also the combination of doing something forbidden by law. • Increased appetite (That could be good or bad, depending on life situation or predisposition of the user) • In terms of addiction cannabis may be one of the least dangerous drugs. Not body addictive, but can cause mental dependency. Some would claim in comparison to alcohol, cigarette, heroin and other opiates, Marijuana is harmless. But heavy usage could cause mental addiction and other problems.

The use of Marijuana is illegal in Tennessee, but the pressure is growing to change that. Already some 17 states in the US have legalized it for medical use. But what are the ‘pros and cons’ of Marijuana and its effect, good or bad, on your health? H&W looks at some of the arguments.

A

ccording to www.isweedbadforyour.org (whose site provided some of the list below), there are many different strains of cannabis with varying concentration of cannabinoids. The concentration and proportion between the different cannabinoids have heavy impact on the operation, use and tolerability.

Here are some of the pros and cons of Cannabis usage.

Above list and info, courtesy of: http://www.isweedbadforyou.org/

The claimed medical use and health benefits are potentially extensive. For example: • Help to treat Glaucoma • Help reverse the carcinogenic effects of tobacco and improve lung health • It can help control epileptic seizures • Decreases the symptoms of a severe seizure disorder known as Dravet’s Syndrome • A chemical found in marijuana called CBD stops cancer from spreading. • It may decrease anxiety (it can also have the opposite effect) See also cons! • THC slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease • Marijuana eases the pain of multiple sclerosis • Cannabis treats inflammatory bowel diseases • Relieves arthritis discomfort • Improves the symptoms of Lupus, an autoimmune disorder • Marijuana spurs creativity in the brain • Cannabis might be able to help with Crohn’s disease • Weed soothes tremors for people with Parkinson’s disease • Marijuana helps veterans suffering from PTSD • Weed reduces some of the awful pain and nausea from chemo, and stimulates appetite • Cannabis can help people trying to cut back on drinking • Cannabinoids activate brain cell growth • It may help at schizophrenia (it can also have the opposite effect) See also cons!

But according to Procon.org (who have compiled their own “Pros and Cons of Marijuana Use-an informative read), there are other ‘Cons” as well.. Legalizing marijuana is opposed by major public health organizations. Some of the public health associations that oppose legalizing marijuana for recreational use include the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Legalization campaigns that imply that marijuana is a benign substance present a significant challenge for educating the public about its known risks and adverse effects,” the American Academy of Pediatrics said. The ASAM “does not support the legalization of marijuana and recommends that jurisdictions that have not acted to legalize marijuana be most cautious and not adopt a policy of legalization until more can be learned.” The AMA “believes that (1) cannabis is a dangerous drug and as such is a public health concern; (2) sale of cannabis should not be legalized.” Marijuana use harms the brain, and legalization will increase mental health problems. Cannabis use may increase the risk of developing schizophrenia, depression, and other psychiatric disorders.Researchers at Harvard and Northwestern found that recreational marijuana smokers showed abnormalities in the shape, volume, and density of certain areas of the brain. 10

Medical Marijuana

June 1st 2109 Vanderbilt Recreation & Wellness Center

Dr. Hans Breiter, a psychiatrist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital who coauthored the study, said, “People think a little marijuana shouldn’t cause a problem if someone is doing O.K. with work or school. Our data directly says this is not so.”A British Journal of Psychiatry study stated, “There is good evidence that taking cannabis leads to acute adverse mental effects in a high proportion of regular users.” A survey published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal reported that 22% of marijuana users experienced “acute anxiety or panic attacks following cannabis use,” and 15% had psychotic symptoms following use. More at www.procon.org

Scientific evidence remains limited In the past, clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of marijuana to treat certain conditions have been restrictive and limited. As medical marijuana becomes more prevalent throughout the world, researchers are doing more studies. However, expert reviews of current research continue to advocate that more studies are needed. Many of the hurdles involve controlling the quality and dosing of cannabis with what is legally available to researchers. Additionally, a number of the current studies are not controlled clinical trials in which a placebo or alternative medicine is used. Without more of these comparative studies, scientific evidence on the therapeutic effects of cannabis will remain in question. Until marijuana is downgraded from a Schedule I drug, widespread clinical trials are unlikely to happen in the United States. If we really want a definitive answer as to whether marijuana is valuable for symptom management, it needs to be evaluated using the same standards as other medications. www.verywellhealth.com 1. The English language has more than one thousand slang words for marijuana. A 1943 article in TIME magazine called it muggles, mooter, and bambalacha, and referred to marijuana cigarettes as goof-butts and gigglesmokes. 2. A 2017 Gallup poll found a record-high 64% support for legalizing marijuana, up from 12% in 1969, the first year the polling company asked about marijuana. 3. Smoking one marijuana joint is as damaging to the lungs as five tobacco cigarettes, and marijuana may contain five times as much carbon monoxide concentration and three times as much tar as tobacco. 4. Marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington has cost Mexican drug cartels an estimated $2.7 billion in profits. 5.

68% of marijuana users report daily or near-daily use.

6. In 2016 The state of Colorado pulled in nearly $200 million in tax revenue thanks to its $1.3 billion in marijuana revenue. Source: https://marijuana.procon.org

Disaster Preparedness

Prepping: A Beginner’s Guide We’re not talking about preparing for the Zombie apocalypse, but for the likes of natural disasters seen recently in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, California and elsewhere. Or even just losing your power supply for a week. Just how ready are you and your family to cope with these catastrophes? Courtesy of Preppers Journal here some basic actions you can take to ensure you survive fit and healthy.

A

prepper has at a minimum ten basic items when they begin to prepare but many go much further than those ten items. Prior to Hurricane Katrina as well as today there are many Americans that feel prepping is unnecessary or a waste of money, but a prepper would say differently. America has failed to prepare to survive in the past, and many Americans still do, so we will look deeper into how to fix this problem. Having a plan is among the most important preparations a survivalist or prepper can have. While states, counties/parishes, and cities have Emergency Action Plans (EAP), having one for the home is just as important. A part of having a family EAP is to allow the family to know and understand what they need to accomplish in an emergency situation. These plans need to include all members of the family especially if the plan includes children, special needs, and the elderly. When these participants are included into a plan it is likely there will be more precautions needed to be taken such as extra medications, oxygen, or equipment. From a personal view, a binder with a family EAP, copies of all important documents, and information about my child with special needs was added to ensure it is a grab and go type situation if evacuation is forced upon us. How often have we seen when a Hurricane is about to hit, local consumers piling into a store buying any and all necessary items to survive the storm that is coming? While this is one way to prepare, having the items already available prior to a storm and not going after items last minute allows for a less stressful personal environment and more time for last minute preparations such as boarding windows. Supplies and supply lists (See box) are never the same nor do they ever have specific items a person should store. While all lists are suggestions it is ultimately up to the person taking preparing into consideration. Regardless of the list a prepper finds or a YouTube video they watch there are normally

ten basics everyone should follow or begin with. The following are a preppers ten basic items: Food, water, security, shelter, hygiene/first aid, cooking, lighting/power, tools/misc./entertainment, sanitation, and communication. Many people coming into prepping can be overwhelmed with the prices of items as well as quantity of different items that complete the same task. Prepping is based on a budget and the prepper’s budget decides where the prepper may want to shop. What is meant by this is that if a prepper is on a limited budget most if not all items can be purchased at a store such as Dollar Tree, but if the prepper has an unlimited budget or is not looking to worry about price as much they may look at larger retail stores such as Bass Pro Shop or Cabala’s, Amazon, Costco and so on. 12

While the qualities will be significantly different, at least the items are within the prepper’s inventory. Speaking of inventory, maintaining an inventory of items is a vital part of prepping. Knowing when items were purchased, how long they last, how many a prepper has, and what is still needed will help keep a prepper on track. While many items can maintain their usage following an expiration or use by date, there are items that can be harmful following these dates. Websites such as Ready.gov or FEMA.gov provide many scenarios as well as a guide of how to prep. Using the timeline provided within Ready.gov a new prepper can begin a routine and learn what they must do prior to, during, and after the disaster occurs. Regardless of the reasoning for preparing, in order to ensure survival it must occur. As Benjamin Franklin, once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. In other words if people do not prepare for what is to come people will not survive what is coming. If the government is stockpiling food, water, weapons, ammo and medical supplies don’t you think it is a good time for you to do the same? When starting out most preppers rely on the basics such as food, water, ammunition, and weapons in order to remain in their home when disaster strikes. While many view preppers as crazy people or someone that simply stores unneeded provisions, preppers are simply wanting to ensure their survival. While many believe an emergency and a disaster are the same thing there are slight differences. An emergency is a sudden or unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action. A disaster is a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or destruction. There are many situations preppers use as their reasoning for being prepared such as economic failure, acts of nature, political upheaval, solar flare, Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) to name the most common ones. All of these situations are likely to occur at any time so remaining prepared at all times allows us to be more in control of our outcome and lessons our fear. Disaster preparedness should never distract a person from meeting life’s other needs and responsibilities. While prepping should be heavy on a prepper’s mind, family and friends as well as work should be most important on anyone’s mind. No matter the situation, emergency, or disaster occurring there are many more important things than worrying about supplies or plans at times when family needs to come first. D

id you know that everything that you put in your body not only affects your internal organs, but also affects your skin? Eczema, acne, rosacea, dry skin, and aging skin are all direct effects of the substances we are putting into our system. Some of the biggest culprits of irritated, unhealthy skin include inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, and sugar, lack of cell-nourishing foods, environmental toxins that cause collagen depletion, and an overworked immune system. Here are four, backed by science, ways to get the glowing skin you’ve always wanted; from the inside, out.

How an Unhealthy Gut Causes Skin Issues Did you know that an unhealthy gut can affect the health of your skin? The ap-pearance of unhealthy skin is often a clear indicator that the good and bad bacteria in the gut is imbalanced, a con-dition known as disbiosis. Try adding gut healing foods into your diet like: fer-mented vegetables, green bitters, coco-nut kefir, coconut oil, and liver to in-crease good bacteria.

14

Eliminate the Igniters of Inflammation Some foods are best left untouched, especially if you want to get the natural glow that everyone strives for. Healthy skin comes from a healthy gut, and foods like gluten, dairy, and sugar can wreak havoc on the gut. They can cause widespread inflammation, which directly effects the epidermis as a result of a stressed immune system in the form on acne, eczema, and other unwanted skin conditions. Be careful with honey, coconut sugar and other “natural sugars as well as gluten-free grains, like oats and rice since they can actually feed the bad bacteria in the gut. It is best to eliminate all forms of sugar, dairy and grains (especially gluttonous grains) during the process of healing the gut and reaching your healthy skin goals.

Feed Your Cells Your cells need a variety of nutrients to function properly. By eating the right foods, you are not only able to nourish your cells on the inside, but the outside as well. Eating foods like wild caught salmon, organic blueberries, avocado, Swiss chard, and probiotic rich foods like coconut kefir and sauerkraut will ensure that your cells are receiving the nutrients they need to repair and recycle themselves. These superfoods can also aid in helping to nourish your gut back to health in order to finally put the fire out in your overly stressed immune system; resulting in beautiful, clear skin.

Get Friendly with Collagen Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in our bodies and is responsible for the strong supportive structure in our skin, bones and connective tissue.

Skin Care

Things like smoking, stress, and poor diet can negatively affect our collagen production and even cause collagen depletion. Luckily, there are many ways to get collagen into your diet in order to protect your skin from collagen depletion! Bone broth is probably the best (and most delicious) way to get an optimal amount of collagen in your diet and ensure the positive effects it has on your skin due to its gut-healing properties. You may also consider a collagen supplement if bone broth isn’t quite your jam. There are many great varieties of collagen supplements that are available in both powder and capsule form that you can find in most health food stores.

Try Intermittent Fasting Ah, yet another reason to try intermittent fasting? You got that right! Intermittent fasting is not only great for weight loss, but it can actually help to promote cell regeneration. A new study featured in the Cell Stem Cell shows that during prolonged periods of fasting, the body actually kills old, damaged cells, and creates new ones to take their place. This enlightening discovery is something that everyone can take advantage of at any age. Could this finally be the “fountain of youth everyone has been searching for? Although more studies need to be done on this subject matter, this particular study does show promising results in essence of new cell growth. Hello beautiful, youthful skin! Future Trends in Health

The Future of your Health N

ever before have we had more ways to diagnose, control and improve our health and wellness. 21st medicine whether it be Alternative or Traditional, drug free or not, can now cure more mental and physical illnesses than at any time in our history.

Alzheimer’s Disease

But what of the Future? Health & Wellness Magazine over the next few issues will look at some of the major (and minor developments) that could impact your health in the years to come. Our eclectic selection will look at everything from a trendy new vitamin to ‘revolutionary’ fitness regimes, advancement in drugs to the impact of technology, and how research may make some of today’s ‘incurable’ illnesses a thing of the past.

Allergies A recent nationwide survey found that more than half (54.6%) of all US citizens test positive to one or more allergens. The market for treatments of Allergies is currently $9.7bn expected to grow at the rate of 5% p.a for next seven years. In total The diagnosis and treatment of allergies is a nearly $26 billion market, according to data from Grandview Research. Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that food allergies in children have increased approximately 50 percent between 1997 and 2011, now affecting 1 in 13 children in the United States. Why the huge increase? One suggestion is, the so-called ‘hygiene hypothesis’ suggests that a lack of exposure to infectious agents early in childhood can create a scenario where the immune system mistakes a food protein as an invading germ. Yet another reason for the explosion in Allergies may be environmental changes. Climatologists say 2000-2009 was the hottest decade on record. The warmer climate may worsen respiratory allergies, as the growing season for plants becomes longer and thus increase pollen and allergen counts, some scientists argue.

The third reason: The various factors a baby is exposed to in utero may have a big impact on its resistance to Allergies. Researchers are continuing to study what foods mothers eat during pregnancy, to determine how that impacts the baby and subsequently the child’s resistance to Allergies.. Though there are a number of effective interventions that prevent or reduce the symptoms asso-ciated with Allergies, treating the underlying cause has eluded scientists. Nonetheless, several promising lines of research provide hope that we can more effectively treat allergies in the future and possibly even cure them. Immunotherapies-In recent years, immunotherapies have been touted as promising strategies for interventions in medications related to allergies. Specifically, because allergic reactions are the immune system’s overreaction to an otherwise innocuous agent, immunotherapy aims to train the immune system to recognize that the substances the immune system is reacting to are not in fact harmful. Probiotics-Probiotics refer to microbes that promote the growth and survival of “good bacteria” and have been identified as a possible solution to allergies. Ongoing scientific research that clarifies the mechanisms involved in allergic reactions will likely lead to more effective therapeutics (even Vaccines) and potentially allergy preventions. 16

Some 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, by 2050 this number could be as high as 14 million. Today, with nearly 100 potential medicines in clinical trials, researchers are more optimistic than ever that a cure will be found well within our lifetime. Here are some: Using MRI-based technology, scientists can now identify early physical symptoms, like plaque buildup, that may differentiate mild cognitive impairment related to early-onset Alzheimer’s from normal aging. Also many of the new treatments in development have the potential to be the first disease-altering medication for this disease. One, for example, uses immunotherapy, an antibody treatment aimed to directly attack the disease and prevent it from progressing. Another possible treatment uses antibodies to significantly reduce the level of amyloid-β, a protein found in the brains of people with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Researchers are also testing treatments that target tau protein tangles that damage and kill brain cells, as well as a receptor that decreases a neurotransmitter necessary for the brain to think and function normally. Additionally, there are medicines being designed to decrease inflammation found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients while strengthening the immune system to fight the disease. Apps

Alternative and Complementary Therapy

The Alternative & complementary market is expected to generate revenue of $196.87 billion by 2025. In 2015 it was just $40 billion. Nearly 59 million Americans have used some form of alternative treatment, according to a 2016 report by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Alternative & Complementary Therapies continue to attract interest from a population looking to avoid astronomic healthcare costs and avoid falling prey to Big Pharma and dependence on drugs. If you’re interested to know more: visit Nashville Health & Wellness’s website to see our recent list of ‘100 Alternative Therapies’.

As this issue is published (October 2018) Apple has just announced that its new iWatch will be able to run an EKG on your heart..the latest example of how Apps and technology are changing the way we can manage and control many aspects of our healthwithout seeing a Doctor. Along with FitBits and other wearable technology our access to instant diagnosesand treatments is changing every day. There are around 325,000 health apps available today- a staggering development when it was only in 2009 that Apple launched the campaign to tell people ‘there’s an App for that’. The impact of Apps in Health are to be seen everywhere: A recent article by www.kapturecrm.com listed these App developments: People can view schedules of the doctors of their choice and book appointments at a suitable time slot. Patientscan now create instant online consultation, free hospital visits and unlimited follow-ups. You can also connect to specialists on voice or video calls to ask questions and ask for help for your problems. Fitness and medical health tracking apps are becoming commonplace. These Apps can help you set targets for health goals and suggest suitable dietary plans to help you get there.

Arthritis Arthritis is an umbrella term covering over 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues around the joint and other connective tissues. Some 50 million Americans are estimated to suffer from some kind of Arthritis. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There are many possible ‘cures’ or at least ways to relieve arthritic pain on the horizon: Osteochondral Autograft or Allograft Transfer System (OATS): In the autograft procedure, surgeons transfer a small plug of cartilage and bone from a healthy area of the patient’s knee to a damaged area. Synthetic Scaffold Resurfacing: These synthetic, long-lasting plugs are used as graft alternatives. ACI: Surgeons first remove a small piece of healthy cartilage from the patient’s knee and culture it, producing millions of new cartilage cells. In a second, open surgery six to eight

A cloud-based CRM solution such as Kapture and other healthcare mobile apps like Practo allow users to upload and enter their medical history and other information on the App. Soon smartphones may be capable of detecting abnormalities in DNA, or detect antibodies through sensors. Both current and newer technologies can be hooked on to a smartphone to aug-ment its capabilities. The above trends are just the beginning of what will be an exciting way ahead for collaboration of mobile technology and healthcare sector.

Biohacking weeks later surgeons fit and seal a collagen patch over damaged cartilage, then inject cul-tured cells. Autologous Cartilage Tissue Implants: use a combination of cell therapy and tissue engineering techniques. The first of these secondgeneration methods could be approved in the United States in a few years. Bio-engineered implants made with the patient’s cartilage cells are grown outside the body and produce cartilage before the implant is placed in the joint. MSCs from bone marrow can become cartilage cells, and have much promise as a treatment for regenerating bone. Stem cells and bone marrow trick the body into healing more com-pletely and efficiently. (PRP): A doctor draws the patient’s blood, separates out platelets, concentrates them and injects the growth-factor rich solution into damaged areas, where they reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. Courtesy: www.arthritis.org 17

Currently Biohacking is a trendy term that’s being used to describe nearly any change you might make to your health. According to advocates, “if your body is a system, it has inputs i.e food, exercise, and outputs i.e energy, and other activities, physical and mental”. Biohackers, as they are called, believe fine tuning those ‘inputs’ can lead to immediate, measurable changes in the ‘outputs’. So far there is little scientific evidence to prove what they are claiming, but it’s not stopping a lot of people trying. Think cryotherapy, EMS training, and taking supplements like adaptogens. But skeptics claim: “No tiny fine tune is going to change your life if you’re not focused on the big picture stuff that we definitely know makes a difference. In other words, if you’re not eating vegetables at every meal, making your coffee Bulletproof isn’t going to help. If you’re sedentary 24-7 and then use EMS to electroshock your muscles, you’re not getting the cardio benefits of exercise” They say you should focus on the big stuff, first, and then get into the nitty gritty if you want to take it further. Others are not impressed with this new ‘craze’ either: “Whether it’s people chafing against regulations that stop them from testing their homegrown drugs on willing idiots, or bulletproof coffee-drinking computer nerds trying to sell their own line of supplements, biohacking is just the same old stuff with a different name. It’s a bit like the term ‘superfood’ — totally meaningless.”

BodyArt Training

Breathwork

Based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine principles of Yin and Yang, which can be understood as ‘passive and dynamic energy’, bodyART® , so proponents claim “challenges you to equalize your powerful, dynamic energy with passive relaxation. This holistic, intense and purposeful experience creates a powerful and lasting effect in your daily life”. So claims the inventor Robert Steinbacher. He explains further: “Once I used a lot of equipment such as Steps, Bodybars, Tubes or Heavy Hands until I reached the conclusion that the fundamental essence of bodyART is that humans don’t need any equipment to find more body awareness, they only need themselves”.

Brain Injury A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs every 23 seconds. It is estimated that in the USA, around 5.3 million people are living with a TBI-related disability. TBI is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among young adults in developed economies and the incidence in the elderly population is increasing. The World Health Organization predicts that TBI and road traffic ac-cidents will be the third greatest cause of disease and injury worldwide by 2020. The cost of TBIs in the United States is estimated at more than $48.3 billion annually: The diagnosis and treatment of TBI is developing all the time. Earlier this year, CNN reported on a new technology that could help decode the thoughts of those with functional brain activity in a completely paralyzed body, brought on by a stroke, traumatic injury. Meanwhile researchers at Harvard are working on a treatment to slow the spread of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease common in people who have had frequent head injuries. The scientists are not sure how brain injuries change the structure of the tau, but they’ve developed an antibody, which can be ingested in pill form, that binds to the mangled tau and provokes the body to destroy it. The pill is still a few years away, but it could be a boon for people with CTE and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, that present similar protein tangles. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a film that changes color when it’s hit. It’s made of polymers that link together to form crystals that refract light. The structure of the crystals morphs on impact, causing the color change. It stays that way

permanently to record the force. The idea is to give an easy indicator for when an athlete or soldier has been pounded hard enough to necessitate medical care. The researchers, whose work has been funded by the military, say it could be incorporated into helmets within a few years. Scientists are now looking to biomarkers, or biological indicators, in the blood to help them differentiate between brain injuries of different severities. For example, there may be an in-crease of a specific biomarker in the blood of a patient with a severe injury that wouldn’t be present in a patient with a mild injury, Managed Care reported. When doctors are better able to determine the severity of an injury, they can make sure patients get the right care at the right time, and that could make a big improvement in their prognoses. There are currently no drugs that actually treat traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) themselves. Yet drugbased treatment could be the future of TBI management, according to the Daily Times. Researchers have identified a naturally occurring compound called humanin, one type of which reduced impairment in mice with brain injuries. If this treatment method is ultimately found to be successful in human beings, too, then there would finally be a medication that treats the injury instead of just addressing its symptoms. Other products such as Brainscope enable doctors to scan the brain after a possible concussion and within just a few minutes determine what, if any brain damage has occurred. With the whole self help, health and wellness market exploding, website Mind Body Green predicts Breathwork will be the next buzzword. Teacher and meditation guide Ashley Neese, as well as human performance expert Brian Mackenzie and neurobiologist Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., believe ‘Breathwork’ is quickly becoming the next frontier in wellness. “I’ve seen a huge increase in demand for this work on the private, group, and corporate levels because of its effectiveness and accessibility,” Neese said. Biohackers are using it as a shortcut to a meditative state, scientists are studying its effects on the nervous system, and yogis are increasingly adding it to their regular practices.” Breathwork is the quickest way to connect to ourselves,” Neese said. “We all do it automatically, but when we learn to do it in a more controlled way, we have access to our intuition and feelings.” With supernatural benefits that promise to help ease anxiety and access intuition, wellness will see more Breathwork in 2018. Cancer In a study done by the NCI (National Cancer Institute) in 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease. According to the NCI, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2018 and 609,640 people will die from the disease. The number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 23.6 million by 2030. The cost of cancer care in the United States in 2017 was $147.3 billion. In future years, costs are likely to increase as the population ages and cancer prevalence increases.

In the main Cancer treatments in the past have been largely reactionary, but experts say, they don’t need to be. Most Cancer is genetic, which means that treatment can be pre-ventative. This is one reason why newer Cancer treatment techniques are searching for actionable targets in the specific gene before the cancer develops. Promising future cures, or ways to identify the Cancer before it develops, include: Precision medicine will offer more people customized care based on their genes and history. Two forms of immunotherapy — checkpoint inhibitors and CAR therapy — are harnessing the power of the immune system to fight cancer. New epigenetic drugs could turn cancer cells back to normal instead of destroying them outright. Scientists are learning more about the genes and pathways that drive metastasis, the process by which cancer spread. Nanotechnology has the potential to transform current chemotherapy treatments, with nano-structures loaded with chemotherapy drugs able to selectively target cancer cells, giving the benefits of chemotherapy, without the side effects. It will be between 5 to 10 years before nano-medicines become available. But there is no doubt that nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize healthcare in the future. America’s biopharmaceutical companies are in the process of developing more than 1,100 medicines and vaccines for cancer, all of which are in clinical trials or awaiting review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Cannabis and CBD With 17 States in the US legalizing the use of Cannabis as a medical treatment-and many more allowing the non hallucinogen version CBD, to be used to help with a huge array of physical and mental conditions, proponents claim this is the drug of the future. Some estimates put the number of medical marijuana users at nearly four million in the US. Currently, the two main cannabinoids from the marijuana plant that are of medical interest are THC and CBD. THC can increase appetite and reduce nausea. THC may also decrease pain, inflammation (swelling and redness), and muscle control problems. Unlike THC, CBD is a cannabinoid that doesn’t make people “high.” It may be useful in reducing pain and inflam-mation, controlling epileptic seizures, and possibly even treating mental illness and addictions. CBD Oil has been know to help with quitting smoking, natural pain relief, acne, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, sleep disorders, glaucoma, Type 1 Diabetes, fighting cancer, anxiety, and other neurological symptoms and disorders, and epilepsy. After researching the safety and effectiveness of CBD oil for treating epilepsy, the FDA approved the use of CBD (Epidiolex) as a therapy for two rare conditions characterized by epileptic seizures in June 2018. Due to the lack of FDA regulation for most CBD products, seek advice from a medical profes-sional before determining the best dosage. Just like anything else, CBD Oil may benefit a per-son’s health in a handful of ways, but taking it also poses risks.

Charcoal ‘Activated’ charcoal to be precise, has arrived to supposedly help restore and reinvigorate our toxin-filled bodies. It’s one of the latest ingredients to gain a foothold in the world of detoxing and purification. Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal, olive pits or sawdust. It is not the same substance as that found in charcoal bricks or burnt pieces of food. Activated charcoal is said to have a variety of benefits, including the potential to lower cho-lesterol, serve as a natural water filter, help treat poisoning, reduce gas, whiten teeth, promote kidney function. Because activated charcoal is not absorbed by your body, it can carry the toxins bound to its surface out of your body in feces. Even doctors have been known to use it to treat overdoses or poisonings. However, the studies supporting these benefits tend to be weak, and many of the other benefits linked to activated charcoal are not supported by science. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to give activated charcoal a try.

Clean Label Food

Climate change and its effect on your health

The desire for safe, healthy food isn’t necessarily new, but it has been picking up steam…big time. Millennials in particular are demanding foods free of chemicals and made from a short list of sustainably sourced ingredients. While the FDA may not have a definition for what exactly counts as a “clean label,” consumers are asking to buy them. According to Nielsen, the share of clean label sales has increased in the last two years, making up to 33 percent of total food and beverage sales this year. At least 93 percent of U.S. households have purchased a clean label product at a grocery store. This past year, has seen larger corporations embrace wellness, by bringing better food at better prices to grocery stores across the country. These moves indicate a strong interest in millennials, who are more dedicated to eating well and supporting ethical, sustainable business practices with their dollars than any other generation. Kellogg, Target, even Pepsi have started selling a wide range of ‘clean label’ products.

While there are still, unfortunately, those in positions of influence who continue to deny Climate Change, and its causes, for the sake of our future health the more informed are al-ready warning us of its likely negative effects. Luckily some 174 other countries and the Eu-ropean Union believe it is crucial that the problem is tackled. But until such time as it is (if ever) the effects of Climate Change will increasingly effect people’s health around the World. And while our current government does little to reduce its effects, its population will gradually see the impact of Climate Change. According to well respected, informed and knowledgeable experts (not politicians) these could be seen in the following ways: Global warming will likely bring an increase in heat waves. Those could combine with the buildup of pollution, including ozone, a primary component of smog. Studies have shown high levels of pollution are linked to an increase in hospital admissions for cardiac problems. Ozone pollution is directly linked to temperature, thus climate change could likely lead to increased ozone levels. Analysis has suggested that, within the next ten years, climate changeinduced ozone increases in the United States could result in 2.8 million additional respiratory illnesses, 5,100 more infants and seniors hospitalized with serious breathing problems, and 944,000 extra missed school days. 20

Studies also show allergies are on the rise in some countries, including the United States, which could be due, in part, to rising carbon dioxide levels and warming temperatures. Global warming may bring an increase in extreme events, including heat waves, floods and large storms, which could come with high death tolls. Heat and drought are amongst the deadliest natural disasters. A study that reviewed weather disasters in the United States since 1980 found the top two killers were heat waves and the drought that comes with them. Increases in heat and rainfall in certain areas brought on by climate change may make conditions ripe for disease spread. Rainfall is thought to benefit insect life, and several studies have linked increased rainfall to disease outbreaks, particularly waterborne diseases. Certain vector-borne diseases illnesses in which a host organism, such as an insect, carries and transmits a disease-causing agent are particularly affected by varying weather and hotter temperatures. Because these vectors are cold-blooded, they rely on their surrounding environment to control their internal heat. So an increase in temperature would potentially favor insect life, and possibly allow the spread of certain diseases, such as malaria, into new areas.

Conscious Consumption

Collagen

Also referred to as Ethical Consumerism, Conscious Consuming is a social movement that is based around increased awareness of the impact of purchasing decisions on the environment and the consumer’s health and life in general. Some facts (Courtesy: womensmarketing.com) 1. 64% of American families prioritize organic, natural, and eco-friendly products when making buying decisions. 2. 62% of all consumers are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. 3. 49% of consumers believe that organic foods are better quality than conventionally grown products. 4. Almost half of consumers who buy eco-friendly products say their primary concern is pur-chasing products that are cruelty free and not tested on animals. 5. 22% share their favorite products with friends and family on social media. A natural offshoot of working less is spending less. Instead of spending time and money shopping, people engaging in voluntary simplicity buy less. They get goods using websites like Craigslist, trade with friends, make do with what they have. As a result conscious consumers find themselves supporting organic agriculture, fair-trade and sweatshop free products, and local and independent businesses. Projections show Consumers increasingly demanding more from manufacturers, growers and retailers that show they care for the planet, its resources, the production process, and the welfare of everything and person in the supply chain.

Whether you’ve sipped it, eaten it, or applied it to your skin, it’s likely that you tried (or have at least heard of) this buzzy wellness product. With age, our collagen production decreases. When this happens, collagen products like Vital Proteins and Primal Kitchen can come to the rescue and act as supplements to help save your nails, skin, and hair. In addition to the many beauty benefits, this transformative powder reduces joint pain, improves gut and liver health, and increases metabolism. Collagen is one of the cleanest types of protein powders, free of many additives that typically fill the supplement aisle. Consumers are increasingly interested in knowing where their food comes from and exactly what’s in it, and collagen— with its single-ingredient label—serves that demand. As for why collagen is suddenly everywhere: “Emerging science is finally reaching a critical mass and trickling down to everyday consumers,” says Will Cole, D.C., a functional medicine practitioner. “People are yearning for ways to deal with the rise of the health problems we are facing as a society. Microbiome and gut health research is a catalyst for people to take re-sponsibility for their health.”

Customized Vitamin Regimes More than half of Americans take vitamins or other dietary supplements, according to The Council for Responsible Nutrition, and in 2015 alone, they spent $21 billion on them. So it’s no surprise that a rash of new companies are trying to get into the game — the newest among them promising vitamin regimens that are personalized to each customer’s needs. There are a host of companies jumping on the bandwagon to sign you up for a monthly dose of healthiness-many once you have completed an on line ‘vitamin assessment questionnaire’. Experts claim that most of the time a proper diet should supply all the vitamins you need, but that you may occasionally need a ‘top up’ vitamin pill. Still there seems to be be no real health downside to this new trend, and it’s keeping a lot of people gainfully employed.

Future Trends in Health

Detoxifying: Your home Many of us have done a detox in order to eliminate internal toxins from our body, but how many of us do anything about the toxins in our own homes? Home detoxes aren’t anything new, but they are on the rise. According to the World Health Organization, 3.8 million premature deaths every year are from noncommunicable diseases (stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and lung cancer). These can be attributed to exposure to household air pollution. Can your safe haven be slowly damaging your health? It’s definitely a possibility. Did you know the average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals?! Many of which we are unable to see, smell or taste! While these chemicals may be tolerated individually and in small doses, problems can arise when one is exposed to them in combination or in larger doses. To start detoxing your home, look carefully at the products you buy-especially those for cleaning. But even major purchases like carpets (traditionally treated with VOCs-a pretty unhealthy product) should be avoided. Go to www.onyalife.com for a list of eco-friendly products for you and your home.

Your body The original detox diet, called the Master Cleanse, was thought up in the 1940s by Stanley Bur-roughs as a “natural” way to treat stomach ulcers. It consists of a daily regimen of 6-12 glasses of water mixed with lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup, plus a laxative at bedtime. The method was never substantiated by any research. Nowadays proponents argue that a Detox diet get rid of toxins in the body and develop the habits that will keep you on track for a healthier life. The body has its own natural detox methods. The liver, sweat, and urine are all ways your body rids itself of toxins. A detox diet is a great way to take the pressure off your organs, so you can keep them strong for the future. There are many different types of detox diets, and each one will give you slightly different results. But no matter which you choose, the benefits of detoxing can’t be denied. But hold on says WebMD ”Not only are detox diets not good for people with certain medical conditions, they could be harmful. There is no research showing they improve blood pressure or cholesterol or have a positive effect on the heart. For people with diabetes, they may be quite dangerous. Any diet that severely restricts what you eat could

lead to dangerously low blood sugar if you take medicine for diabetes”. Warnings aside this trend shows no sign of slowing down. Your mind: Did you know the average American spends more than half of their waking life staring at a screen? In addition recent studies show that 90% of Americans use digital devices for two or more hours each day. Predicted to be a major trend by Forbes magazine, ‘digital detoxes’ are continuing their rise. A digital detox, is a period of time in which a person refrains from using electronic devices. It has proven tobe beneficial for relationships, productivity, physical health, and mental health too. Too much screen time can result in things like cyber sickness (symptoms that range from headaches to woozy feelings can occur when you quickly scroll on your smart phone), text claw (soreness and cramping felt in the fingers, wrist and forearm after heavy smartphone use), eye strain, phantom vibe (when you imagine your phone going off in your pocket), damaged sperm (caused by heat from laptops), and overeating (research shows that looking at images of caloric food can incite cravings and a person’s desire to eat).If you find yourself overly stressed or unproductive, it might be time to unplug. A great place to start: http://digitaldetox.org

Diabetes According to the CDC, more than 100 million adults in the United States are living with diabetes or prediabetes. In 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or close to 10 percent of the population, had diabetes. Of that amount, the ADA estimates 7.2 million didn’t know they had it. The CDC’s annual report shows that diabetes diagnoses for Americans age 18 and older are increasing, with new diagnoses occurring at about 1.5 million per year. Those numbers were equal for men and women. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

Possible future delivery methods for insulin include: • by nasal or spray across the mucous membranes, the surfaces inside the nose. • by the inhalation of powder alongside any injections. • through patches on the skin. Surgeons could soon also transplant insulin-producing pancreatic cells from donors. Some people already benefit from the early progress of research into islet cell transplants. The idea of an artificial pancreas is an ongoing area of research as well. The artificial pan-creas is a device that mimics the blood sugar function of a healthy pancreas. According to the dailytelegraph.com researchers are also looking at another potential cure for diabetes. They’re looking at the beta cells, which are the cells in the pancreas that the immune system attacks. Doctors can replace those cells using an islet transplant. But they rely on donated pancreases, which aren’t easily come by. 22

Longer term scientists are looking at stem-cell therapy. Here they could make beta cells from scratch in the lab, doing away with pancreas donations. Researchers are also looking to see if these beta cells can be coated with a protective outside so when transplanted, they’re safe from the immune system.

Food Addiction

Millions of dollars are spent making these snacks have an irresistible taste.

Understanding the Bliss Point: Or why you can’t eat just one Pringle Author Siim Land writes a lot about life, empowerment and health. Here he talks about the ‘Bliss point’... how food manufacturers spend millions researching and creating foods that are addictive.

M

ichael Moss’ bestselling book Salt, Sugar and Fat talks about how the food corporations have tricked their consumers into getting addicted to their products. Their market researchers and food engineers are trying to figure out the exact amount of an ingredient, such as salt, sugar, or fat, that would optimize palatability and reach the ‘bliss point’. The pioneering work in this field was done by a psychophysicist Howard Moskowitz who created

and optimized food from spaghetti sauces to soft drinks. He describes the bliss point as: “that sensory profile where you like food the most.” The reason why we crave these three ingredients is that evolutionarily they’re the most precious sources of calories. Salt is essential for life, sugar gives us instant energy and fat is a viable back-up supply. Our subconscious mind can’t help but to motivate us to consume as much of them as possible. The problem with this is that, unless you’re aware of it, you’ll easily fall victim to your unconscious 24

urges. What’s more, if your bliss point is too high, you’ll never be satisfied enough. If your taste buds are under the constant stimulation of processed food and refined carbohydrates, then you’re habituating your mind to be content with nothing less. After a while, you get used to your current bliss point and need to take it to the next level again. You now have to eat, but you’ll also be craving something sweet to drink as well. It’s like a junkie who wants to get another hit.

Food Addiction

Of course, there’s a huuuge difference between the jolt you get from vegetables and pastry. One puts you on a blood sugar high and makes you want more, whereas the other nourishes you and keeps you satiated. The main issue with having too high of a bliss point isn’t about health or consuming too many calories. Much rather, it has to do with values and your mindset. This bliss point doesn’t apply only to food, it can be found in almost anything else as well – clothing, relationships, sex, entertainment, fast cars, money, fancy houses etc. There’s nothing wrong with having a high bliss point, it’s just that it can become our downfall. If we aren’t able to be content, then we will never be truly happy either. More sugar, louder parties, another caffeine jolt, faster cars, bigger houses with more and more stuff we don’t actually need. Constantly trying to get more and more stimulated will leave us chasing rabbits and running like hamsters inside a wheel. On the other hand, if your bliss point is lower, then you’ll get incredible joy from even the smallest of things. You can get immense amount of enjoyment from something so trivial, such as pure water, clean food, less stuff and quality, not quantity relationships. Paradoxically, your happiness increases, as your bliss point decreases. The quickest and surest way to liberate yourself from the stimulating effect of processed food is to do strict water fasting for at least 2-3 days. During that time, your taste buds will reset themselves and your mind will begin to appreciate the presence of food. If you’re eating all of the time, you won’t be able to free yourself from its effects. The best way to get rid of dependency, is to simply re-condition yourself and become independent. This will re-conceptualize hunger and changes your relationship with food. After breaking the fast, you’ll know how fortunate it is to even have a mouthful. Even healthy food will taste amazing, because your palate has been reset, enabling you to be extremely satisfied with less. If you’re being aware of where your bliss point lies, you’ll be able to always adjust it. Only you know what satisfies and makes you happy. Eventually, the bliss point will increase by default. Every sensory experience, even the healthiest of kind, will start to add upon itself and builds in height. Repeated actions that yield a

positive response motivate us to keep doing them in the future. By periodically abstaining from the activities that make us happy, we can reset our bliss point and lower our palate. You only know what a good meal tastes like, after you haven’t had one for a long time. Hopefully you can see the benefits of having a lower set bliss point. The quality of our lives will actually increase and our values improve. It starts with food, but can be applied to anything else as well. Our taste buds and palate are exactly there, where we’ve habituated them. Being used to

stimulating food teaches us to not be satisfied with anything less. That’s why I practice some form of intermittent fasting almost every day. It detoxifies the body, cleans the mind and nourishes the soul. On top of that, I also follow a ketogenic diet, which is the 5th strategy. The food eaten might seem bland and with not a lot of flavor to some – vegetables, eggs, meat, butter with no candy, pastry, potatoes, or even fruit. For more about Siim Land go to: http://siimland.com/

Every year, the average American eats thirty-three pounds of cheese and seventy pounds of sugar. Every day, we ingest 8,500 milligrams of salt, double the recommended amount, almost none of which comes from the shakers on our table. It comes from processed food, an industry that hauls in $1 trillion in annual sales. In Salt Sugar Fat, reporter Michael Moss shows how we ended up here. Featuring examples from Kraft, Coca-Cola, Lunchables, Frito-Lay, Nestlé, Oreos, Capri Sun, and many more, Moss’s narrative is grounded in meticulous, eye-opening research. He takes us into labs where scientists calculate the “bliss point” of sugary beverages, unearths marketing techniques taken straight from tobacco company playbooks, and talks to concerned insiders who make startling confessions. Just as millions of “heavy users” are addicted to salt, sugar, and fat, so too are the companies that peddle them. You will never look at a nutrition label the same way again. Food manufacturers are said to try to make sure each food product contains combos of two or three of these three nutrients at its bliss point. That’s because if consumers like the taste, they will eat more and, ultimately, buy more. We must always remember that the food industry is like any other business, where a major motive is selling more products to earn more profit.

Getting the taste of Dr Pepper: 61 Formulas... 4000 tastings One example from Moskowitz’s work, which was cited in Michael Moss’s book “Salt Sugar Fat” related to Dr Pepper and pinpointing the soft drink’s precise bliss point, which involved the creation of 61 distinct formulas (about half for the regular version, and about half for the diet version). Then, disseminating the formulas at nearly 4,000 tasting events staged across the country, in which tasters would sip a formulation, allow a few minutes for their taste buds to bounce back, and then taste again, the results provided numerical values relating to the beverage’s taste and the likelihood the taster would purchase the product. 25

Ballroom dancing

Ballroom Dance

How Affects Your Brain, Body and Well-Being It may not be the most obvious way to get, and keep, fit but as Marielle Suddarth (pictured) found when she talked to Shalene Archer, it’s an interesting and effective alternative than the gym.

“I

think there are very, very few other (physical) activities that can hit you intellec-tually, emotionally, and socially,” says Shalene Archer, Nashville local, whose name is commonplace in the ballroom dance community worldwide. Having been ballroom dancing since 1992, and competing professionally since 1993, Shalene is a 3-time U.S. National American Smooth Champion, as well as World Smooth Champion, to name just a few of her titles. Ballroom dance may not be your first thought when considering ways to improve your health, even with the increased media attention in recent years, but the com-prehensive benefits of ballroom dancing are as impressive as Shalene’s list of championship titles. These benefits range from increased brain function, physical benefits, and improved mental health. Not many activities can claim such an im-pressive “trifecta”, as Shalene says, and rightly so! One of Shalene’s students is autistic and is a prime example of how powerful ballroom dance can be. Working with this particular student has been a “hugely re-warding and life changing experience for him AND for me,” says Shalene. When he first started lessons he was uncomfortable with touch, unable to engage in conversation, and struggled with sensory overload. Six years later he has learned all the International Standard dances, says Shalene, and “goes to competitions; an environment where

people are screaming, yelling, there is loud music, and he LOVES it!” Shalene’s firsthand experience is not the only account of neurobehavioral and neurological improvements attributed to ballroom dancing. The dance style has such a beneficial effect on brain health that it is now being used to treat individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Ballroom has also been proven to be the only physical activity that lowers risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s study in 2012. Dr. Katzman states that those engaging in ballroom dance are “more resistant to the effects of dementia as a result of having greater cognitive reserve and increased complexity of neural synapses.”

10-12 lessons a day, 4 days a week, so she doesn’t require much more additional activity to maintain her level of fitness. Shalene does incorporate an Orange Theory workout about once a week, due to the volume and frequency of her dancing she has to be extra cautious regarding joint health, so she enjoys the low impact quality of their workouts. She also swears by stretching, “If you have limited time one of the most important things you can do is stretch, the body loves it, and most people don’t take enough time to do that and so that’s something that I definitely try to do everyday. I stretch and do abdominal exercises!” Competition weeks are a different story for Shalene. “When I go to the competitions I dance three or four days, a LOT. So that can mean starting at eight o’clock in the morning and going to eleven o’clock at night, with little breaks in there, but it’s a little bit like a marathon three times in a row!” How does she do it? Shalene is very mindful of the quality of food she eats as well as her supplements. “I do try to think of food as my fuel – that helped me to get a healthier relationship with food.” Shalene commented on the fact that many professional dancers look at food in an unhealthy light, more as a threat then as fuel for your day! Regularly Shalene eats a lot of salads, vegetables, and proteins, and aims to follow the 80/20 principal. “I do try to also treat myself… 80 % of the time you’re making good choices, and 20% of the time you’re living

Ballroom has also been proven to be the only physical activity that lowers risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Essentially, our brain rewires neural pathways as needed, and if we fail to challenge ourselves in this area, we become more susceptible to neurological problems as we age. The physical effects of ballroom dance are apparent when speaking with a profes-sional ballroom dancer like Shalene! Dancers are known for superior mobility, stamina, and lean muscle mass, and ballroom dancers are no exception. In a typical week Shalene personally averages around 26

Ballroom dancing

life, and then you don’t feel like you’re constantly depriving yourself.” So after every competition, Shalene’s kids are very excited not only to see her, but because they know they’re all taking a trip to Krispy Kreme that weekend for Shalene’s favorite glazed donuts! Supplementation also plays a large role in Shalene’s everyday performance and helps her to remain injury free. Her preferred brand is AdvoCare, an Informed Choice option popular among athletes today. Her regimen includes protein shakes, amino acids, arginine, collagen, and BioCharge, a multivitamin that aids in recovery. With these additions, Shalene says, “I feel like I’m living my day more, instead of just surviving my day, and that’s great!” For those who feel like they are just surviving their day, ballroom dance can help improve stress levels, anxiety, depression, and many other areas. The New York based non-profit, Dancing Classrooms, discovered that their youth ballroom classes not only improve the physical fitness and mental capacity of the underprivileged youth they serve, but it also greatly improves social skills, stress management, and depression. In addition to the endorphin release you get from physical activity, “you simply cannot think about the stressors in your life when you are trying to figure out which foot goes where, and so you are forced into a situation where all your other cares kind of disappear for that amount of time,” Shalene notes. The social aspect of ballroom dance also helps individuals of all ages escape isolation, in a world where we can be over-connected electronically, but simultaneously lonely. Detox

5 Tips for Detoxing the Body (Hint: no juice cleanse necessary!) Erin Judge, (pictured) suggest ways to help get rid of the toxins in your body that attack you every day in every way. Support the liver. Since the liver is the main player in detoxification, it is important to support liver function and health. Foods that negatively affect liver function are alcohol, refined vegetable oils (canola oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil, corn oil, and safflower oil), sugar, artificial ingredients and sweeteners, chemical pesticides and herbicides, and fried foods. Limit these and focus on a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole unrefined grains, lean proteins from quality sources, and healthy unrefined fats. It is also important to move your body throughout the day to maintain proper blood circulation. When you move, the heart pumps blood more efficiently, which brings blood through the liver more efficiently.

Reduce inflammation.

D

id you know that your body absorbs the toxins and unwanted organisms from the air, your food, and anything else you are exposed to throughout the day? These toxins and organisms can cause damage to your body’s cells, tissues, and organs. It is vital for the body to remove them before they cause harm. This process is known as detoxification. The majority of the work of detoxification is done by the liver. The blood circulates absorbed toxins through the liver, where there are enzymes waiting to either inactivate them, or break them down so they can be eliminated. The kidneys are then able to filter the broken down toxins from the blood and eliminate them through urine. Some toxins can also be excreted from the blood through sweat. Since our liver and kidneys work hard to remove toxins from our bodies, it is clear that these organs can become stressed and overworked when we

expose ourselves to more toxins every day. These may be found in the air as a result of pollution, in our foods, in skincare products and makeup, in our cleaning and home products, and more. The best way to prevent toxins from being absorbed in your body is to reduce your exposure wherever possible. Be aware of air standards, eat real food and limit unknown ingredients, eliminate harmful chemicals and ingredients in beauty and home products, and quit (or never start) using tobacco products. The word “detox” has been used by many in the wellness industry to promote a juice cleanse, a complete elimination of sugar/carbohydrates and a restrictive diet. True detox is happening inside of your body every single day. So, instead of restricting yourself or loading up on juice for a week, focus on aiding the body’s natural detoxification process with these five tips. 28

When the body is fighting to remove toxins, inflammation can occur. Chronic inflammation can lead to disease, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Choosing anti-inflammatory foods and reducing inflammatory foods can help reduce the inflammation caused by detoxification, and can help build up the immune system. Foods that are thought to be anti-inflammatory include probiotic-rich foods (kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt), dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, antioxidantrich foods, local raw honey, green tea, coconut oil, omega-3s from salmon and walnuts, turmeric, and apple cider vinegar. Foods that are shown to be inflammatory are sugar, nitrates found in processed meats, saturated fats, large amounts of dairy, refined flour, vegetable oils, trans fats, and artificial additives and sweeteners.

Balance blood sugar levels.

The liver makes sure the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood stays constant. By managing blood sugar levels, the liver will have more energy to use for detoxification. Keep blood sugar levels balanced by avoiding high sugar and starch intake in one meal, and by balancing out small amounts of starch from vegetables and whole grains with healthy fat and fiber. Even large amounts of fruit and fruit juices that can spike blood sugar levels, which is why a juice cleanse may not be the best solution to support detoxification. It is best to consult a registered dietitian nutritionist for guidance on blood sugar control.

Eat your fruits and vegetables.

Antioxidants from fruits and vegetables help the body neutralize toxins and free radicals that cause damage. Some fruits and vegetables to focus on for a boost in antioxidants include dark leafy greens, berries, and beets. Fruits and vegetables also contain the vitamins and minerals that the liver and other organs in the body need for optimal health and function.

Support the gut and digestion.

In order to utilize antioxidants to assist the liver and to properly remove toxins, it is vital to support the digestive system, where nutrient absorption occurs. Eat probiotics and prebiotics to feed the good bacteria in the gut that protect the body from harmful organisms, avoid foods that cause gut inflammation and interfere with digestion, drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins, and reduce stress to avoid unnecessary gut inflammation. If you struggle with digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and cramping, you may benefit from an elimination diet of common allergens like wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, dairy, shellfish, fish, soy, and eggs. You can add each food back slowly to determine your specific triggers for gut distress. No matter how much exposure you have had to toxins and unwanted organisms in the past, you can start reducing exposure and applying these 5 tips today to support your detoxification process! If you need additional help, consult your doctor or registered dietitian nutritionist. About the author: Erin Judge is a Nashville-based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Manduu

Manduu: The Gym of the future is

here, and it’s right in our backyard Wiley Robinson, RN and Chief Operating Officer, Manduu America (pictured) explains why he believes this new fitness technique is set to revolutionize the industry.

W

e all know that we should be working out. I doubt anyone questions the benefits of staying fit, exercising, building muscle and getting rid of unhealthy body fat. It all sounds good on paper until it’s time to actually do the work. Maybe you wake up one day and realize you haven’t exercised in years, and your body doesn’t move like it used to. Others may be coping with a substantial injury or chronic pain that makes working out seem impossible. Oftentimes the idea of becoming fit again is so overwhelming that you don’t even know where to start. Manduu America offers a groundbreaking solution through a technology-driven exercise regimen that combines electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) with personal fitness, creating a 15-minute workout that will revolutionize your health. Manduu America, the only FDA-cleared, full-body EMS system in the United States, is

bringing this progressive solution to individuals of all ages and fitness levels throughout the country, and we’re starting right here in Nashville. While I’m currently serving as Manduu’s chief operating officer, I’ve been working hands-on in the fields of fitness and healthcare for over 30 years. I began my career as a critical care nurse in the 1980s while also completing further studies in pre-medicine and molecular biology. I served as the general manager for gastroenterology, hepatology and plastic surgery units at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans for years before eventually moving to Nashville. Here I established several successful martial arts academies, as well as a personal training company specializing in clients with morbid obesity, diabetes and other debilitating metabolic conditions. When it comes to helping others maintain healthy lifestyles, you could say I’ve seen it all. Throughout my career, I studied the benefits of EMS-based workouts, but only recently has technology hardware and software allowed this type of strength training to become reality. Years ago people faced obstacles like safety issues, a basic lack of understanding about electric frequencies and inadequate training programs. Now these barriers are gone, and 2018 is heralding the bold arrival of EMS in America. EMS fitness studios are already well established in 32

Europe, which boasts over 2,000 rapidly growing studios. Manduu has already established locations in Miami, Santa Monica, and the greater Nashville area – in Cool Springs and Brentwood, with a Green Hills location set to open this fall. Perhaps the greatest perk of a Manduu workout is the time commitment of only 15 minutes per week. With expertly designed technology, our machines are able to deliver a low-voltage current that activates over 90 percent of your muscles through an ultra-low-impact session of flexing and resistance movements during each session. An FDA-certified Manduu personal trainer tailors the program to individuals based on their unique fitness goals, and our INBody™ scan measures skeletal muscle mass, total body fat, visceral fat, hydration, metabolic rate and other relevant metrics before each session. In particular, Manduu targets the dangerous visceral fat that surrounds your organs, while simultaneously building and toning muscle. This is truly the gym of the future, presenting a viable fitness solution for a broad range of clients at different stages in life. I encourage you to check it out at manduu.com, and come try it for yourself. The first session is always free, and it might just change your life.

Meniere’s Disease

New Support for those with Meniere’s Disease Karen Pashley (pictured) is a local author who suffers from Meniere’s Disease. “A somewhat rare, mysterious, progressive disease of the inner ear that affects how I hear, how I see, and how I function”. Here she describes the problems it creates-and how a new initiative with Vanderbilt Medical Center hopes to offer help and advice to fellow sufferers.

S

udden attacks of spinning vertigo, nausea, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and a sensation of fullness in the ear — these are the hallmark symptoms of Meniere’s Disease. Often an attack will occur without warning, and some people suffer drop attacks, their equilibrium so disrupted they are not able to right themselves before slamming into the floor. Vertigo attacks are sometimes preempted by a sudden loss in hearing from the affected ear, along with intense, disorienting ringing in the ear. Vertigo and vomiting can last for hours, fol-lowed by a period of extreme exhaustion. In between episodes, many battle ongoing symptoms such a brain fog, dizziness / rocking sensations, nausea, and fatigue, and though people often feel unwell, they go about daily life, often coping in silence. With surprisingly little research to date, Meniere’s is not a condition that is “in the spotlight”, and many in the general public are unaware it even exists. Thought to affect .2% of the adult population, most sufferers experience the onset of symptoms between the ages of 40 and 60. Diagnosing someone with Meniere’s presents a challenge for doctors because the symptoms and triggers often mimic those of other disorders. Though there is no cure, this complex condition is often managed through lifestyle changes including maintaining a strict low sodium diet, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, reducing stress, and getting proper sleep. That’s a tall order for most patients, and easier said than done. Medications can help alleviate symptoms

in some patients, while others require more aggressive treatments and surgical procedures. The condition tends to come and go, causing even more confusion and frustration. Relief can last months, sometimes years at a time, only to have the attacks return without warning, and unfortunately, with greater intensity. Beginning in November, The Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt Medical Center will be offering a free monthly support group, where Meniere’s patients in the Middle Tennessee area, regardless of where they go for medical care, can come and find encouragement, knowledge, and empowerment to help them manage their condition. The health care team at Vanderbilt Medical Center recognizes the importance of providing accurate diagnosis, treatment and care for patients with Meniere’s Disease. Each month a Vanderbilt professional will present a topic of interest to the group, followed by a time for attendees to ask questions and get to know others who understand their struggles. Guest speakers in the fields of Audiology, Otolaryngology, Research and Clinical Trials, Holistic Medicine and Stress Management among others will be donating their time to the program. Although the internet is riddled with frightening and often untrue information about the condition, there is hope for those with Meniere’s Disease. With proper diagnosis, careful symptom management, improvements in treatment options, and maintaining a positive attitude, many people can lead productive and enjoyable lives. 34

We’re here to help If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Meniere’s Disease, we invite you to attend monthly meetings hosted by the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center. Come and receive education, management options and coping strategies from Vanderbilt professionals along with support, compassion and encouragement from folks just like you. UPCOMING MEETING DATES:

November 6, 2018 December 11, 2018 January 8, 2019 February 5, 2019 March 5, 2019 April 2, 2019 UPCOMING MEETING TOPICS: • Diet and menu planning • Upcoming clinical trials and research • Stress management/mindfulness • Symptom triggers and how to manage them • Hearing aides/cochlear implants • Self care • Tinnitus • Treatment options • Exercise and vestibular therapy • Testimonies/sharing of experiences Meetings will feature a presentation by the guest speaker, question/answer period, and fellowship time. Self help

How to Handle Emotional Attachments? Have you ever found yourself in an emotional loop from which there doesn’t seem to be a way out? Many people experience emotional attachment as burdensome since they are unable to move away from certain people, possessions, habits and beliefs. Sadhguru, yogi, mystic and the foremost authority on yoga provides insight into the nature of attachment and how to overcome it.

Sadhguru:

There is a lot of talk about the head and the heart business. There is no such distinction in the real sense because the way you think is the way you feel. The way you feel is the way you think. For different people, different things run first. Today, largely because of the type of education, for most people, their thoughts run ahead of their emotions. But there is still a sizeable percentage of people for whom their emotions run ahead of their thought. Nowadays, those people whose emotions run ahead of their thought are made to feel stupid because they do not understand the power and the intelligence of emotion, though people are starting to talk about emotional quotient.

Turnaround Time

There are situations that you don’t wish to be in but the emotions are tangled up, so thought keeps going there and unknowingly you keep walking in that direction. It is just that thought is agile, it can turn around fast. But emotion is sappy. It takes some time to turn around. Today you can think, “Oh! This person is the most wonderful person.” Tomorrow, if that person does something that you don’t like, your thought will immediately say, “She’s no good.” But emotion is not that agile. If my emotions have gone ahead

with this person, they cannot turn around so quickly. In the meantime, you struggle.

Monkeys on the Mind

What do you do about this? Don’t try to control your emotions or thoughts because the very nature of your mind is such that “I don’t want to think about this person” means that’s the only person I’m going to think about for the rest of my life. This is the proverbial monkey story. If we tell you, “Don’t think about monkeys for the next five seconds”, can you not think? Only monkeys! Because this is the nature of your mind. If you say “I do not want something”, only that will happen. When compulsive thoughts and emotions come, the first and foremost thing that you do is, you simply see them for what they are – you don’t try to resist them. The moment you resist, they will multiply. In this mind, you don’t have subtraction and division, you only have addition and multiplication. If I say, “I don’t want this emotion,” it will add – one will become two. If you say, “Oh my god! It’s coming again, I don’t want it,” it will multiply by hundred. This is the nature of your mind. In this mind, you cannot forcefully remove anything.

Distance From Data

What you need to do is understand that thought and emotion are just a recycle of the data that is already there – something that you remember. It is just that memory is a little smelly, so it keeps coming. You just need a little distance from that. 35

Suppose you were on your way to the airport and you got stuck in a traffic jam. How much anxiety and struggle you would have! Then somehow, you got to the airport and got into the flight and took off. From up there, when you look down, how nice the traffic jam looks! This is simply because there is a little distance. It is still the same traffic jam but because there is a distance, suddenly there is nothing to it. Similarly with your thought and emotion, with a little bit of practice, you can create a little distance from your physiological processes and your psychological processes. But if you try to handle individual thought and emotion, they will multiply thousand-fold. Sadhguru will be personally offering Inner Engineering in San Mateo, November 3-4, at the San Mateo Event Center. As Sadhguru rarely conducts this program, this is a unique opportunity to learn Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, a lifetransforming practice from him. Essential Herbs

Detoxify your Body Naturally Sheila McGinnis (pictured) suggests some Herbs that can help you keep fit and healthy in the colder months.

A

s Fall arrives it’s time to get our bodies in a healthy state so that we can fight off the viruses that are all around us over the Winter months. We can stay well even if those around us are sick by first detoxifying our body. Detoxifying is basically to rid our bodies of harmful toxins, and your organs will thank you. Below are five of my favorite herbs to cleanse your body’s most important organs. • Dandelion Root: My first go to for this cooler time of year is warm tea and not only is tea comforting for our soul, it can be comforting for your liver when you drink dandelion root tea. Not only will it

detoxify and strengthen your liver it helps with increasing bile and keeps our digestive system working smoothly. Another advantage of having a clean liver and getting our digestive system flowing you will benefit with glowing skin. I still can’t get over how many people want to kill this “weed!” • Milk Thistle: This powerful herb contains silymarin, a bioflavonoid that contains several anti-inflammatory compounds that can heal fatty liver disease. We think of fatty liver as an issue due to alcoholism, but the foods we eat can also cause our liver distress. Remember the liver is our most important organ.

• Fenugreek: This is another “go-to” for me in the fall and winter months due to its ability to dissolve mucus in our lungs (contains mucilage a demulcent). It contains enzymes that can also help regulate glucose. It too is warming and grounding to our body and can be made into a tea or even chew on the seeds to help with stomach pain. • Parsley: It’s more than decorations for your plate; this is a powerhouse herb! It reduces many types of cancer risk (including skin cancer), its high in vitamin K which is important to bloodclotting, bone health, and keeping arteries clean, protects against diabetes, and supports good kidney functions. So add some to your next juice.

Dental Health

Is It wise to keep your Wisdom teeth? Jaime A. Romero, D.D.S, (pictured) writes states that in most cases, it is inadequate space in the mouth that does not allow the wisdom teeth to erupt properly and become fully functional. When this happens, the tooth can become impacted (stuck) in an undesirable or potentially harmful position. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can contribute to infection, damage to other teeth, and possibly cysts or tumors.

T

hird molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, are usually the last four of 32 teeth to erupt (surface) in the mouth, generally making their appearance between the ages of 17 to 25. They are located at the back of the mouth (top and bottom), near the entrance to the throat. The term “wisdom” stems from the idea that the molars surface at a time typically associated with increased maturity or “wisdom.”

Types or Degrees of Impaction There are several types, or degrees, of impaction based on the actual depth of the teeth within the jaw: Soft Tissue Impaction: The upper portion of the tooth (the crown) has penetrated through the bone, but the gingiva (gum) is covering part or all of the tooth’s crown and has not positioned properly around the tooth. Because it is difficult to keep the area clean, food can become trapped below the gum and cause an infection and/or tooth decay, resulting in pain and swelling. Partial Bony Impaction: The tooth has partially erupted, but a portion of the crown remains submerged below the gum and surrounding jawbone. Again, because it is difficult to keep the area clean, infection will commonly occur. Complete Bony Impaction: The tooth is completely encased by jawbone. This will require more complex removal techniques.

Reasons to Remove Wisdom Teeth While not all wisdom teeth require removal, wisdom teeth extractions are most often performed because of an active problem such as pain, swelling, decay or infection, or as a preventative measure to avoid serious problems in the future. If impaction of one or more wisdom teeth is present, and left untreated, a

number of potentially harmful outcomes can occur, including: • Damage to nearby teeth: Second molars (the teeth directly in front of the wisdom teeth) can be adversely affected by impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in tooth decay (cavities), periodontal disease (gum disease) and possible bone loss. • Disease: Although uncommon, cysts and tumors can occur in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth. • Infection: Bacteria and food can become trapped under the gum tissue, resulting in an infection. The infection can cause considerable pain and damage. • Tooth Crowding: It has been theorized that impacted wisdom teeth can put pressure on other teeth and cause them to become misaligned (crowded or twisted). This theory isn’t universally accepted by all dental professionals, and it has never been validated by any scientific studies.

Wisdom Teeth Examination As with any dental procedure, your dentist will want to initially conduct a thorough examination of the wisdom and surrounding teeth. Panoramic or digital X-rays will be taken in order for your dentist to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and determine if a current problem exists, or the likelihood of any potential future problems. The X-rays can also expose additional risk factors, such as deterioration or decay of nearby teeth. Early evaluation and treatment (typically in the mid-teen years) is recommended in order to identify potential problems and to improve the results for patients requiring wisdom teeth extractions. Only after a thorough examination can your dentist provide you with the best options for your particular case. 37

What Does the Removal of Wisdom Teeth Involve?

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure, generally performed under local anesthesia, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anesthesia by a specially trained dentist in an office surgery suite. The surgery does not require an overnight stay, and you will be released with post-operative instructions and medication (if necessary), to help manage any swelling or discomfort. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please contact Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392.

Spine Health

Focusing on Spine Health According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), 75% of Americans will experience some back pain during their lifetime. Dr Chris Taleghani, of Pinnacle Surgery (pictured) suggests some ways to make sure this problems doesn’t effect you. • Use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Push, rather than pull when you move heavy objects, but don’t move anything beyond your strength ability. Bend your knees when picking up and lowering the object, keep a straight back, and do not twist. • Make sure your mattress and bed pillow support your neck and back. • Do exercises that stretch and strengthen the muscles of your core, which are those muscles that run the

length of the entire torso and stabilize the spine and pelvis. Strong back and abdominal muscles can help you maintain good posture and keep your spine in its correct position. • If you suffer from persistent, chronic, or recurring back pain, consult your doctor. In most cases there is a conservative, nonsurgical treatment that can resolve the pain. However, if left untreated or allowed to progress, back pain may lead to serious and severe disability.

Consulting a Neurosurgeon for Severe or Chronic Back Pain

Have you ever wondered why you would want to consult a neurosurgeon for severe and/or chronic back pain? When people hear the word neurosurgeon, most think brain surgeon. However, neurosurgeons are medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders of the entire nervous system. Throughout our sevenyear residency, we are trained to treat diseases of the spine. In fact, we treat the entire spine - both the spinal cord itself and the structures that can exert pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.

H

owever, focusing on lifestyle, activity and diet habits in an effort to have a healthier spine could mean boosting your immune system, energy and vitality level. Just think, our spine is what makes it possible for us to stand upright and move about on two feet. Extremely important, right? I honestly believe that the key to spinal health is prevention.

To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call Cumberland Brain & Spine at 615-884-0001, or visit us online at www.cumberlandbrainandspine.com.

Chris Taleghani, M.D., M.B.A. Dr. Taleghani is a board certified neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery and complex spine and brain conditions. He received his Medical Degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his Neurosurgery Residency training at Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Taleghani also earned his MBA from George Washington University while completing medical school.

Some Prevention Tips Include:

• Maintain a healthy body weight and if you smoke, quit. Smoking and extra weight can not only damage the spine, but are factors that can negatively impact spine surgery. Also remember, an inactive lifestyle contributes to lower back pain. • Maintain proper posture while sitting, standing and walking. For example, don’t slouch with stooped shoulders. Improving your posture can also help prevent injury and makes regular activity in daily living a non-issue.
