Boulder Colorado based Rush Bowls has chosen Nashville for its latest restaurant opening. Scheduled to open mid summer at 1201 Demonbruen Street, Rush Bowls says it will be offering "a large selection of handcrafted bowls packed with protein, with as many as five servings or fruits & vegetables, all ready in minutes." Opening the franchise is Jason Wilkins, an 'escapee from corporate America.' "I spent two years looking for an opportuniry like this," Wilkins told Health & Wellness. He added that Rush Bowls saw the huge potential Nashville had to offer to reach its market of "Millennials and Young Professionals.'' Rush Bowl's Chief Marketing Officer Mark Kranjcec told H&W that they could see as many as "three or four Rush Bowl Restaurants in Nashville.'' Each Rush Bowl restaurant will cater to both take out and eat in diners, though at around 1,000 sq. ft., there will be "minimal seating," added Wilkins.

Is sleeping in separate beds good for your relationship?
Nearly one in four couples sleep in separate bedrooms or beds, according to a 2015 survey by the National Sleep Foundation. A 2013 study from Toronto's Ryerson University puts that number at 30-40 percent. For many, sleeping in separate beds is a practical
decision, made with the goal of both partners having a good night's sleep. "A good night's sleep is important: when we have too little, we are likely to awake in a bad mood and be more emotional," claims Dr. Amanda Zayde, a licensed clinical attachment-based psychologist in New York City quoted in the Huffington Post. Adding, "people have become used co having their own space, and they don't necessarily want to relinquish it as they enter into a relationship. Most couples who elect co sleep separately find it to be positive for the relationship." Author of the Ryerson University survey Colleen Carney said, "I think the idea of 'sleep divorce' is an unfair term. People can have very good and satisfying relationships sleeping apart," she added.
RESTAURANT REVIEW: CHRISTIANA MUIR
Subculture Urban Cuisine and Cafe
_J ~-
On the comer of Nolensville Road and Old Hickory Blvd. in southeast Nashville is a new hole-in-the-wall eatery called Subculture Urban Cuisine and Cafe. Founded in 2016, this restaurant offers bold and delicious sandwiches, burgers, salads and sides at a small price.
Foods to improve your sex life According to a New York Post story (March 29th), there are 20 foods that can do a lot to spice up your sex life (and we're not talking Curry here). Everyone knows about Oysters, but Asparagus and Chilies? Apparently these two vegetables have lots of Vitamin B and proteins. Elsewhere on the list come Walnuts (Omega Oils)
Subculture's decor is rustic and industrial. Upon entering, you will find a small intimate room with a few wooden tables and benches and a picnic table outside. The focal point of the room is a pallet bar with a concrete top, metal piping and galvanized metal stools where you can order your meal as well as a selection of beers on tap.
and Beetroot (good for men apparently) with Truffles and Coffee coming in at number 19 and 20. Whether there is any scientific evidence to back up these claims is debatable. And if you want to boost your libido, then Black Raspberries, Broccoli, Watermelon and Ginseng are ones to put on the menu.
Plans to legalize Marijuana in Tennessee for Medical use unlikely in 2017 According to various reports, a Bill designed to legalize marijuana will not make it through the Tennessee Legislature this year, despite support from both political parties. A resolution proposed by Representative Sabi Kumar suggested use purely for medicinal purposes, but claims by Dr. Michael Warren, deputy commissioner for Population Health at the
There is limited seating, however, this is part of the charm. Service is friendly and quick and the food is delicious. Entrees range from $7.50 - $11. On the menu, you will find bold flavors and surprising mixes in most foods with medium-sized portions.
Tennessee Department of Health, that marijuana was addictive and did little to reduce use, and abuse of opioids, were attacked by the proponents of the Bill. In the end, the Bill was sent to 'Summer study,' though advocates seem to think even this small progress will not ensure it passes through the Senate in its current form.

Bargain priced food in a small, intimate atmosphere charmed our restaurant reviewer. The tasty and healthy meal for two came in at under $28!
Favorites include: • Butternut Squash Salad ($7.50): pork/chicken, roasted butternut, kale, crumbled cotija cheese and roasted red pepper • Churrasco Sandwich ($11): marinated beef/grilled chicken, fried egg, tomato, chimichurri, aioli and avocado • Pork Belly Ramen ($9): pork belly, mushroom, soft boiled egg, jalapenos and sambal.
Other items on the menu include various hot chicken dishes, burgers and sandwiches. All breads are homemade and all food is cooked and served fresh. Along with your entree, you can order sides for $1.50- $4.75 including asian slaw, quinoa salad and french fries. Make sure to head over to Subculture in Southeast Nashville for a taste of its urban cuisine. Subculture also offers Saturday brunch, taco Thesdays, and keep an eye out for their food truck around town. "l'loople have a geneml understanding now that it is not unhealthy to be overweight or obese as long as your lifestyle is relatively healthy," said senior study author Kristine Faerch of the Steno Diabetes Center in Copenhagen. All-on-4 vs. Dentures By Jaime A. Romero, Jr., D.D.S.
If you're looking at tooth replacement options, it's important to make the right choice. You want to be able to smile, eat, and speak comfortably and normally for the rest of your life. Two common options are traditional dentures and All-on-4, or implant-supported dentures. espite calling mem traditional, modem dentures D are noming like me ones from the past. Some of me early versions were carved out of wood, making 1hem uncomfortable and poor-fitting. Today's dentures are custom made from fine porcelain and soft acrylic to offe.r me most realistic and comfonable experience possible.
Traditional Dentures Traditional dentures are designed to be easily removable. The arch of me jaw suppons mem and meir surfaces res1 directly on me gums. This makes it very easy to take mem out for cleaning and sleeping. It also means less complication for oral specialists while making adjustments for fit. 14
All-on-4 implants are a different option for tooth replacement. Traditional dentures are not completely stable because mey rest on me surface of the gums. Most people need to apply some son of adhesive to keep meir dentures in place throughout the day. Sometimes they can slip while eating or speaking, which can be embarrassing. All-on-4 dentures actually anchor to small dental implants, rather man relying on me surface of me gum. The posts are made of titanium, making them extremely durable and safe for use in the moum. These implants are carefully embedded into me jaw during a surgical procedure. Four of mem are placed within me moum, depending on your personal needs. Once me fixtures are healed and secure, your irnplant-supponed dentures can anchor tO mem, providing incredible stability. Only four posts are necessary to suppon an entire set of teem, hence me "All-on-4" name. All-on-4 treatment eliminates movement and prevents jaw atrophy, meaning you'll be able to maintain maximum function and retain the shape of your jaw line. They may also enhance confidence because they are so secure and don't require removal for cleaning and sleeping. If you're not sure what rype is right for you, call and schedule an appointment wim Solace Oral Surgery today at 615-320¡1392. The W ar On Lung Disease
The war against lung disease won't be fought with inhalers or pills, but with stem cell therapy.
Traditional Treatments vs Stem Cell Therapy War is hell-particularly when the battleground is inside your own lungs. Unfortunately, for mi llions of Americans, chron ic lung diseases such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema seem to be winning that war. Across the U.S. 6.3% of the adult population (roughly 15 mill ion people) have been diagnosed with COPD-a prevalence that is predominantly seen within adults older than 65.
W
orse still, as the disease's symptoms of fatigue, coughing and shortness of breath can often mimic the natural aging process, it's estimated that another 25 mill ion Americans are currently undiagnosed. As the third leading cause of death in the U.S.-with 730,000 COPD-related hospitalizations in 2011 alone-this is a national problem, a problem that is often tragically ignored. Whether we know it or not, this is a war against lung d isease, a war that will inevitably touch our lives or the lives of those we love.
So, what are we doing about it? Sadly, not that much. In the fight against lung disease, though there are a variety of traditional treatment
options, these weapons can have their benefits and downsides. As an obstructive lung condition that creates a feeling of breathlessness, traditional medications have included inhalers, medications and supplemental oxygen. Though these treat¡ ments can open airways, calm down aggressive symptoms, and in the case of oxygen, address oxygen deprivation directly, these standard treatments are not without their drawbacks. To start, these medications can be exorbitantly expensive over time-particularly on ftXed incomes-creating situations where prescriptions are given up completely rather than forfeit the coSt of another refill. In other cases, the side-effects of medications can be worse than the symptoms they're 15
designed to combat, causing weight loss or gain, nausea, headaches and dizziness. Supplemental oxygen, however, can become an anchor, reducing the mobility and quality of life of those who become tied to it. In the fmal months of World War II, Japan was undaunted. Facing an interminable war in the pacific with a force that found the concept of surrender to be nothing short of a disgrace, America faced an enemy unwilling to yield. With a continuing war set to cost millions of Japanese and Americans lives, America needed a breakthrough. That breakthrough-the breakthrough to end the Pacific War-was the A-bomb. Today, the breakthrough needed to end the war on lung disease may be just as significant; its name is stem cell therapy. Within recent years, the development of regenerative medicine (the practice of using the body's own cells to heal itself) has exploded, allowing innovative upstarts like the Lung Institute (lunginstitute.com) to enter the fight. As opposed to traditional treatment options, stem cell therapy involves the careful separation of stem cells (the body's natural healing mechanism) from a patient's blood or bone marrow, returning them into the bloodstream where they come to rest within the lungs. Working to relieve inflammation (which opens the airways and allows easier breathing), these specialized cells may also aid in slowing disease progression-a feat that few, if any, traditional medications can attest. In the climax of WWII, time and the decision to act were the deciding factors of world hisrory. In the war against chronic lung disease, speed and commitment are paramount in combatting disease progression and worsening symptoms. In the face of fear and uncertainty, the choice to act is courage. Courage is victory. And, victory is peace. If you or a loved one suffer from a chronic lung disease, the specialists at the Lung Institute may be able to help. You can contact the Lung Institute at 855-914-3212 or visit lunginstitute.comtwellness to find out if you qualify for these new treatments.

How can a dentist help me treat OSA?
The Danger of Ignoring Your Snoring
By Ryan O' Neill, D.M.D.
We spend one-third of our lives asleep but often times pay very little attention to what our body is doing while we sleep. Snoring while we sleep is not normal and it can actually be a symptom of a dangerous sleep disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Signs and symptoms Does your bed partner tell you that you snore? Do you wake coughing, choking, or gasping for air? Do you feel excessively sleepy d uring the day? If you answered yes to these questions, you a re considered to be high-risk for suffering from sleep apnea. Snoring is not something to be ignored and could be a warning sign that you suffer from sleep apnea.
In some situations, a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSt'J") may be recommended, which allows you to
sleep in the comfort a nd privacy of your own bed. Fig. 1.1

Sleep apnea can also lead to the development of other serious conditions including: • High Blood Pressure • Acid Reflux • Weight Gain • Type II Diabetes • ADHD Effective treatment of sleep apnea results in fewer hospital visits from these re lated diseases. A sleep study is needed to determi ne if you have a sleep-disordered breathing condition such as OSA.
Dentists can be the first to recognize the related signs and symptoms of OSA by evaluating the upper airway, tonsils and teeth. The actual dimen· sions of the airway can be accurately measured with a 3D cone beam image, which highlights excessively narrow portions of the airway. Dentists cannot diagnose OSA, however, they can work closely with a sleep medicine physician to create and implement your treatment plan.
Benefits of oral appliance therapy CPAP is the gold standard for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. However, studies have shown that 40-50% of CPAP patients are non-compliant. More recent evidence supports health outcomes with oral appliance being equivalent to CPAP in a wide range of conditions for patients with mild to moderate OSA (improvements in sleepiness, qua lity of life a nd blood pressure are similar).
Fig. 1.3
Treatment options Scientific evidence supports that upper airway col· lapsibility is the primary cause of OSA and snoring, which fall into the category of sleep-disordered breathing. Treatment options include: medical interventions, positional therapy, weight loss therapy, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) systems, oral appli· ance therapy (OAT) and surgery. Oral appliance therapy can be a first-line therapy solution for patients who suffer from mild tO moderate sleep apnea. &/ole Oral Appliance

Allergies
Natural cures for a natural problem By Sheila McGinnis, local Herbalist
How to avoid allergy problems It's that time of year again: itchy eyes, runny noses, scratchy throats, and constant sneezing... allergy season is upon us. Springtime is beautiful in Nashvil le w ith its blooming trees and flowers. But with it comes allergies in all shapes and sizes, as Christiana Muir (pictured, left) reports.
A
nd while they may be pretty to look at, if you find yourself feeling unwell when you go outside, your body may be alerting you to an outdoor pollen allergy. In the months of March¡ October, Nashville residents experience a variety of allergies. In the summer it's grass, and in the fall it's ragweed, and right now in spring it's pollen. Pollen has been referred to as the "snow of the South" as it seems to cover anything it can touch. Weather patterns directly affect pollen. It's in the air on dry and warm days and spread by wind. 'TYPically, Nashville doesn't have many freezing nights during the spring causing the pollen to stick around. Often, you will find a dusting of yellow on your windows, cars and outdoor furniture letting you know that spring is in the air. As you breathe in pollen, your inunune system mistakes it for invading germs. As a way to protect itself, it sneezes the pollen out. This can also lead to sinus congestion. In addition to sneezing, your eyes may be watery, red, and itchy, all signs that are common with pollen allergies. As your eyes come in contact with pollen, they release a chemical called histamine that causes swelling and inflammation because your eyes are irritated. Another symptom of
pollen allergies is a sore irritated throat. As your body is exposed to pollen, it may drain down to your throat causing coughing, excessive swallowing, irritation and difficulty speaking. So, if you don't want to bunker down in your home for the next three seasons, how can you treat your allergies and still spend time outdoors? Pollen is released in the morning, so it is best to spend time outdoors in the afternoon when the pollen concentration isn't as high. The best time to go outside is after a fresh rain when the pollen has been washed away. Despite the beautiful weather, try to avoid driving with the windows open or going for walks on breezy days because it will blow pollen directly onto your face. In addition, wash your fruits and vegetables well as they are probably covered in pollen you cannot see. Thankfully, there are over the counter medications you can take as well. Most doctors suggest for patients to choose one of three common antihistamines, Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra (or their generic equivalent) , and one of rwo nasal steroid sprays, Flonase and Nasacort (or their generic equivalents) . Also, be sure to try out some of these homemade remedies for allergy relief. 17
Ahhh the beauty of spring is in full bloom and so is the pollen! Allergy sufferers rake heed! You can run to the doctor or pharmacy for a pill or spray or you can tum to nature and what has been used for generations with proven results. Below are some of my favorites and their benefits. Local raw honey (think of using honey that has same plants/weeds that are in your state): Minimizes the symptoms of seasonal allergies and hayfever. Strengthens the immune system. Relieves sore throat pain. Netie pot or saline sprays: Take about Y. to 'h of non-iodized salt to one cup of warm water (preferably distilled water) and rinse your nose a couple of rimes a day to rinse our pollen and even mold. Quercetin: Antioxidant; Relieves symptoms of allergies such as itchy eyes and sneezing, asthma and hives. Helps with some food allergies. Warning: Do not rake if you have liver disease, pregnant or nursing. Stinging Nettle (as effective as most prescribed/ over the counter antihistamines): Relieves hay fever symptoms. Eczema is decreased. Asthma improves. Butterbur: Calms allergic reactions. Clears the respiratory tracts. Treats and can even prevent migraines (I know this has worked for me). Also a great fever reducer. Essential oils: Lemon, lavender, and peppermint (preferably organic): 3 drops each in a gel capsule. BHRT, what makes Ritz Med Spa different? A. First of all, we use BioTE Medical for all of our hormone dosing. BioTE Medical is committed to excellence in educating doctors and patients about bio-identical hormone pellet therapy. Please beware, not all hormones are created equally. Some have impurity levels with 13·15% inaccurate margins. BioTE hormones have higher purity levels with no variations from pellet to pellet, optimizing all of your HRT with impurity levels a low 3-5%, thus taking the guessing out of your hormone dosing. Q. I understand you use pellets. Why and how often? A. Pellets release all-natural bio-identical estrogen and testosterone and are absorbed consistently into the body as needed. And because they are pure, without fillers or synthetic ingredients, they completely dissolve at a consistent pace. This means they are not metabolized into byproducrs by going through the liver, stomach or skin. This delivery system allows your body to use the right amount of hormones as the blood flows around the pellets and picks up what is needed. This is a more effective method of HRT transpon over creams, patches, shots or pills. Pellets are needed every 3-4 months.

Sex and your Zodiac sign!
Aries "Aries love winning, so sex for these fiery lovers is always a worthwhile conquest," says Faragher." This sign isn't afraid to be aggressive in the bedroom, either." Meaning, of course, that a take-action Aries can get down with some impressive, acrobatic sex reminiscent of those everyday athletes on American Ninja Warrior. Challenge an Aries to a marathon between the sheets, and you will not be disap¡ pointed," Faragher promises.
Taurus
Does your Star sign reveal your Sexuality? Your Zodiac sign could explain a lot about you and your partner's sexual preferences. Bobby Box investigates with help from the founders of Align whose app explains what each sign means when it comes to Sex.
W
hether you believe in the powers of astrology or just happen upon your horoscope while nipping through a newspaper or magazine, few can deny the characteristics that they share with their sign. Horoscopes have a tendency to be a little less accurate since, well, these things are written daily (or monthly) and of course they're not always going to be correct. So let's give the stars a bit of a break, and credit them where credit is due. What you may not have known is that your astrological sign is tied to your sexuality.
And since there isn't a Yelp service for bedroom reviews, your exes are pretty much all you've got to go by - and that's probably not a great idea since most exes don't exactly end amicably. That's why I suggest you take the stars' word for it-J'm talking actual stars here, not celebrities. I asked Aliza Kelly Faragher and Helen Grossman, co-founders of Align, a Los Angelesbased app that matches users with prospective partners based on their astrological sign and other key identifiers, to tell us what to expect when having sex with each different sign.
''Taurus is ruled by Venus, which makes it one of the most sensual signs," Grossman begins. "Their sexual style is intimate and slow, with lots of smooching, snuggles, stroking, and spooning involved." Despite not being the aggressor, that doesn't mean sex with a Taurus is in any way boring. In fact, the Taurus boasts impressive endurance, and will therefore require a partner who can keep up with them.
Gemini Energetic and fun, Geminis are known for their unpredictability - you just never know what you're going to get with this imaginative sign. In the bedroom, Geminis avoid getting bored by switching things up - a lot. "A Gemini also tends to speak their mind," Grossman adds. '\A.nd that's no exception in the bedroom."

Sex and your Zodiac sign!
_r1__ Cancer
Libra
Capricorn
Cancers are ruled by the moon, so their energy comes out at night - which, coincidentally, is when most people have sex! Cancers also happen to be extremely intuitive and are willing to experiment sexually as long as they're in safe and supportive relationships. "Make a Cancer feel comfortable, and things will get very interesting," Faragher shares.
Libras value beautiful things and are therefore sensitive to ambiance, so be s ure to make romance a priority. Many times Libras will do this themselves by setting the mood with some playful foreplay, and "since this sign deeply values fairness, you can be sure they'll return the favor," Faragher ensures.
'1<\t work and in social situations, Capricorns can be quite traditional," Grossman begins. ''They always set goals and do whatever it takes to reach them, and that's no exception in their sex lives." They're in it to impress, and if you know what's good for you, you won't let their seemingly buttoned-up nature fool you. Capricorns get wild when sex is on, beside, or under, the table.
~
Leo Leos love to entertain, Faragher admits, so it's no surprise that sex with these lionesses can be a tad pom-y (but for the sake of Leos everywhere, we'll go with the less offensive term, "theatrical"). "Leo lovers will certainly offer an experience unlike any other," Faragher promises. "So be prepared for an incredible evening."
~
Scorpio
Aquarius
Scorpios are known to be one of the most seductive signs. Secretive, intense, and highly erotic, don't be afraid to get kinky with these lovers - you'll be glad you went there. "Eye contact drives Scorpios crazy," Faragher adds. "So be sure to lock eyes to get the full Scorpio experience."
Aquarians are true individuals and the quirkiest sign of the Zodiac. "While they are loyal partners, they aren't the type to treat sex as an emotionally connecting experience," says Grossman. A big plus for those lucky enough to bed an Aquarian is that this sign is always down to try new things as a means of keeping sex interesting. In case this point hasn't already been made, it means you're in for a lot of experimenting.
Sagittarius
Virgo Sweet and well intentioned, Virgos want to strike a balance between people-pleasing and needing things to be perfect. "In bed, a Virgo feels more comfortable pleasing their partner, but that doesn't mean they don't know what they want," Grossman shares. "When comfortable enough, Virgos can have a lot of fun spicing it up and being the dominant partner."
Fun and flirty, a Sagittarius is all about having a good time - and sex is what most would consider a good time, right? Since this sign is all about fun, sex with a Sag is understandably playful and spontaneous- so don't be afraid to try something new! "This adventurous sign also tends to be turned on by outdoor trysts," Faragher suggests. "So don't be surprised if you end up getting down in some unusual environments.,'
Reproduced with permission: www.bustle.com Written by Bobby Box 22
Pisces Pisces are known for their self-sacrifice, but that stems from their affinity to be desired, so just love them, alright? "Pisces are very generous," Grossman says. '1<\nd as one of the most intuitive signs in the Zodiac, their sexual moves will make partners feel sensations they've never felt before." I~s a good idea to let them know of the good job they're doing to serve as a confidence boost. ':Just because they're always willing to give, however, doesn't mean you shouldn't return the favor," Grossman says.
Women's Health Month
factors among nurses in Nashville's hospitals and health systems; a clinical study on pregnancy complications and their link to CVD risk factors and CVD; a workforce health initiative through the Office of the Mayor to improve the heart health of female municipal workers; a screening and prevention effort in collaboration with Tennessee State University to reduce CVD and its risk factors in younger women; and a community initiative centered around one or more health centers and reaching African American, and/or immigrant refugee women.
Women's Heart Health - Nashville takes up the challenge In February, the Women's Heart Alliance (WHA)- a nati onal non-profit organization co-founded by Barbra Streisand and Ronald 0. Perelman dedicated exclusively to women's heart health - announced the Cities and Communities w ith Heart Initiative (CCHI) Nashville, a collaborative, multi-year effort to stop women in Nashville from needlessly suffering and dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD).
J
oining WHA in this effort are Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, Metro Public Health Department Nashville, Meharry-Yanderbilt Alliance, NashvilleHealth and Saint Thomas Ascension Health, along with country music superstar and WHA spokesper¡ son Martina McBride and more than two dozen local supporters who are working closely in this first-of-its-kind effort to harness the diversity and energy of the Nashville community to make a broad impact on heart disease and stroke among its women.
Health & Wellness Magazine asked the Women's Heart Alliance CEO, British Robinson to provide some more details on the problems they are addressing and how CCHI is trying to help:
H&W: Is Nashville worse or better than the national average when it comes to Women's Cardiovascular Disease? Nationally, cardiovascular disease is women's number one killer - and Nashville is no exception. For every one woman who dies of breast cancer, in Davidson County more than eight die from heart disease and stroke. Additionally, risk factors locally are high: 23.2 percent of adults smoke; nearly onethird (31 percent) are obese; about 1 in 4 (26 percent)
adults are physically inactive; 33.6 percent report having high blood pressure; and 33.5 percent say they have been diagnosed with high cholesterol. Additionally, residents in many parts of the ciry lack easy access to affordable, healthy food .
H&W: How long is this initiative running for and how will you gauge its success? The Women's Heart Alliance will work closely with Nashville partners to improve heart health in local women and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by implementing the previously outlined activities. We will measure and evaluate each activity, and in two years, we hope to see the following among Nashville women: increased understanding of women's cardiovascular disease; reduced behavioral risks (smoking, physical activity, etc.); increased access to prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of CVD; increased quality of CVD care; and increased survival after a cardiovascular event.
H&W: What can women do to improve their cardiovascular health? Eighty percent of heart disease and strOke can be prevented by lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet and treating high blood pressure. CCHI Nashville will raise awareness of ways women can improve their heart health and provide the tools for them to do so. We strongly encourage women over age 20 to #GetHeartChecked. Visit www.womensheartalliance.org to learn more about what questions to ask your doctor.
H&W: What are you doing to improve the situation for the 'average' Women in Nashville? CCHI Nashville plans to give women in Nashville the tools to improve their heart health through five activities: Caring for the Caregiver, a program to improve cardiovascular health and reduce CVD risk 23

Women's Mental Health
At last, a non-drug treatment for PMS, Menopause and Depression. For many of the more common Women's Mental Health problems, there is now an alternative to drugs. Certified LENS Neurofeedback practitioner, Sheri Rowney (pictured, left) reports on some recent success stories she has seen at her Harmonized Brain Centers here in Nashville.
H
appy Women's Health Month! This is an awesome month to spotlight all that we should be doing to maintain good health and wellness. While most women will make time for their regular PAP smear and Mammogram, there are many others suffering the ill effects of PMS, Menopause or Postpanum Depression without realizing there is help for these too. LENS (low energy neurofeedback) could be the help you need and didn't even know it was there. In the six months since we opened our doors here in Nashville, we have had the opportunity to help many women. Here are some of their st.ories.
Kendall A young woman of 25, Kendall was so excited to become a first time mother; reading all the books, eating healthy. doing everything she could during her pregnancy to give her baby the best stan in life. Other than the usual aches and pains, she felt great during her pregnancy and looked forward to becoming a mom. The binh went according to plan, her first attempts at breastfeeding were positive and then WHAM! About the 5th day after binh, things changed. She was tired, she was sore, her inability to soothe her baby at times had her feeling anxious and depressed. These feelings continued to get worse, day by day until she literally felt like she could not get out of bed. Her mother, looking for help, brought her in for a consultation. A few LENS treatments later, she was back to her normal self, feeling happy and positive and excited to be a new mom.
Chloe A 32-year-old professional, Chloe is a busy woman; works a 50 hour week, works out daily and loves to socialize with her many friends and boyfriend for 23 days of the month. The other 5 to 7 days she suffers
with PMS; raging mood swings, anxiety, migraines and feeling so tired she can hardly focus. She tried many different prescribed medications to help but they were either ineffective or had side effects worse than the symptoms. She came to Harmonized Brain Centers (HBC) with little hope that we could help. We began LENS treatments once a week and within two months, her symptoms had decreased dramatically or gone away completely; leaving her free to be herself the whole month.
Denise A 54-year-old woman was struggling through the effects of Menopause. While the doctor had prescribed hormonal replacement that had helped with the physical changes, Denise was still struggling with the mood imbalances, foggy brain and headaches. She came into HBC looking for hope and we were able to help. After a few weekly treatments, she was able to sleep better, felt more calm and focused and was able to resume doing the things she enjoyed once again. LENS (low energy neurofeedback) is a non-invasive, easy treatment that allows the brain waves to reset; giving it the opponunity to run more effectively and efficiently. It is quick, it is painless and the results are fast. There is no need to suffer with the headaches, the fogginess, the depression and anxiety just because you're a woman and thought you had to. Give me a call and let us help.

LENS Neurofeedback is non-invasive, quick and successful in over 95% of cases.
What is LENS Neurofeedback and how is it different from other forms of Neurofeedback? An excellent question. In brief, while they both work to regulate your brain's activity by calming or repairing the brain's excessive or damaged areas, the procedures are different.
1i'aditional Bio or Neurofeedback Most traditional Bio or Neurofeedback therapies require the patticipant to engage in tests or activities while wearing a cap of electrodes that monitor the brains' activities. These are connected to a computer that analyzes the feedback and regulates the brain areas that are causing the problems. Getting enough rest is crucial in helping to fight off ailments such as heart disease, Alzheimer's and other serious health risks.
Some of the best sources of prote in come from animals such as wild fish, grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and free-range eggs. You can also find protein in some lentils, raw milk, and black beans. Vitamin D: Let the Sunshine In For Healthy Living It is estimated that one billion people are Vitamin D deficient worldwide, according to Vitamin D expert Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University School of Medicine. Vitamin D plays an important role in a wide range of chronic health conditions as well as providing a critical role in the absorption of Calcium and Phosphorous. Human beings acquire Vitamin D from the sun. People living in Northern Latitudes where the angle of the sun's rays are unable to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D to the skin are more likely to develop and die of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, colon,
pancreatic, breast and other types of cancer. Vitamin 0 deficiency causes havoc in vitro and throughout the life span of human beings. running or swimming can give your self-esteem a boost and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety. To bum extra calories and build muscle mass, spend an hour or so a week weight li fting in addition to your regular exercise regimen.
6. Visit the Doctor Regularly Seeing your physician on a regular basis allows him/her to keep track of valuable information such cholesterol and blood pressure readings, and other medical history. By doing so, he/she will be in a better position to treat you should a problem arise. It is also important to keep routine appointments for exams such as pap tests and mammograms.

Oral infections and other problems involving the teeth and gums can affect major organs as well as cause digestion problems. Rece ntly; there has even been a link discovered between gum disease and hean disease. So, grab your toothbrush and floss!
8. Get Enough Vitamin D Unfortunately; most women are deficient in vitamin D. Yet it plays a vital role in preventing osteoporosis and keeping the immune system functioning properly. It can also help to reduce the risk of contracting diseases of the heart, multiple sclerosis and even viruses such as the flu. Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is best regulated by the body when absorbed via the sun. However, due to the risk of skin cancer, getting enough ca n be risky. Luckily; there are many other ways to get the recommended 600 international units (IUs) per day. For example, many brands of milk, orange juice, and cereal have already been fortified with vitamin D. It can also be found in mushrooms, pork, and fatty fish s uch as salmon, trout, tuna, mackerel, and eel. There is also a s upple ment available if you aren't getting enough of the vitamin through your diet. As a woman, you must wear many hats and j uggle a lot of tasks. For this reason, neglecting your health is not an option. You always take care of everyone else; now you must decide to take care of yourself. sreoanhriris (OA), also commonly referred to as degenerative joint disease, affects many individuals. OA is a slow, progressive breakdown of joint structures that can significantly impact mobility, function, and independence. OA rypically affects weight bearing joints such as the hips and knees. Many individuals will complain of limited range of motion, morning stiffness (short duration), and crackling or popping. Pain is often reported as a deep ache which is worse with activity and better with rest. A common misconception regarding activity level and OA is that increased activity or exercise will increase the risk of OA. A healthy lifestyle is essential in the prevention and treatment of OA. Those at highest risk for OA participate in high impact spores, especially those involving contact with other players (i.e. football, soccer, and hockey).' Another form of arthritis that many suffer from is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This form of arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammatory joint symptoms. Often RA attacks both sides at the same time where OA affects one side. While OA affects weight bearing jointS, RA can impact any joint, bur often involves the wrist, knee, and fingers of the hand. RA is generally diagnosed with laboratory restS such as the presence of the Rheumatoid factor. Other symptoms of RA include constitutional symptoms (fever, weight loss, and fatigue), marked morning stiffness that lases > 1 hour, finger deformities and/or rheumatoid nodules which are firm, raised, and are often not tender to touch.' They can be found along the elbows, fingers, or heels.

and medications. Movement is often encouraged with OA to limit symptom worsening and improve stiffness. In severe cases, OA can be treated with surgical approaches (total joint replacementS). RA can be treated with medication and/or physical therapy. In some cases, surgery is indicated for individuals with RA. Goals of physical therapy for both OA and RA are to regain/maintain range of motion, reduce pain, and improve function.

Anemia
Living with Anemia Makenzie jones (pictured), a student at Lipscomb University, suffers from Anemia Symptoms. Here she describes the symptoms, risks and treatment - and how she lives with it on a day-to-day basis.
T
hough much of America is trying ro bulk up in the gym, there is also a growing awareness of another kind of iron that is inside your body and without enough of it, you may have a hard time lifting those weights, or simply geuing through the day. It's called Anemia. Anemia is a worldwide condition affecting people of aU ages and genders. There are several different rypes including vitamin deficiency anemia, chronic disease anemia, aplastic anemia, hemolyric, and sickle cell anemia, among others, but the most common variation is iron deficiency anemia.
Anemia Anemia symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale or yellowish skin, irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness or ligbtheadedness, chest pain, cold hands and feet, and headaches. Since these symptoms are things that anyone may experience at times, seeking a diagnosis may not be the first reaction of someone suffering from anemia, but obtaining some simple blood rests may provide greater insight to the sources of suffering. In the US, 10 million are iron deficient and half of those have iron deficiency anemia.
Causes General anemia stems from low hemoglobin, an iron-rich protein that makes red blood cells and enables those cells to carry oxygen to the cells and carbon d ioxide away. Causes can vary, including the body not making enough red blood cells, bleeding that causes more to be lost than can be replaced, or cells that are destroyed by the body. Ulcers, bone marrow disease and cancers can cause anemia, as well as gastrOintestinal disorders such as Crohn's Disease and Celiac Disease.
Risk Factors Women arc at a higher risk than men due to th e loss of blood during their menstrual cycle a nd the need for extra iron for developing babies during pregnancy. Chronic conditions such as ulcers or cancers that rake nutrientS from the body also increase risk. Young children who drink lots of cow's milk have a greater risk because of the
Anemia doesn't stop me doing what I want to do. Being a runner, I have struggled with Anemia since going into high school and have teammates who have also suffered, including boys, too. When my iron becomes too low over rime, I know the feeling. It doesn't matter if I have been sleeping normally or even more, eating a good diet, and training as usual, aU I want to do is sleep. It took a while, but gradually after talking with my doctor and getting on supplements I began to regain my energy. It has dipped too low several rimes since then, and I have seen how it can hurt athletic performance and generally put a damper on my life. My parents and I are conscious to make sure that I get red meat a couple times a week, take my supplements every day, and eat many other sources of iron throughout the day and week to avoid a backslide. It rakes time to deplete the stores, but once they get too low, it also takes time to build them back up. Life goes by too fast to feel extremely fatigued all the time. Take it from someone who has been there; if you think there may be more to your low energy than too much to do and not enough sleep, getting your blood tested and working towards restoring your nutrient levels is weU wonh it.

amount of calcium that can hinder iron absorption. Those who are vegetarians or restrict pans of their diet also make it more difficult to ensure they are getting the amount and rypes of iron to prevent a deficiency. It has also been found that regular use of some over the counter pain reUevers, especiaUy aspirin, can increase risk.
Iron Deficiency Anemia Iron deficiency anemia is the most common deficiency in humans. Most of the iron we intake is absorbed in the upper small intestine, but our bodies can only absorb a small fraction of that. Ferritin is a blood ceU protein that stores and transports iron, so this level directly relates to how
Anemia
much iron is able to be stored and used by the body. Transferritin is the protein that does the transporting from the things we eat. Some iron is able to be recycled after it is used, while some is stored in the liver. Aside from the general symptoms listed previously for anemia, with iron deficiency type, it can also cause brittle nails, unusual cravings for nonnutritive substances such as dirt or ice (this is called pica), poor appetite, and a swollen or sore tongue. In pregnant women, it can cause harmful effects to both mother and child, including birth defects and depression. Some people who suffer this deficiency also develop restless leg syndrome.
Diagnosis and Treatment Obtaining a diagnosis for iron deficiency or anemia can be done with simple blood rests from the complete blood count, hemoglobin, ferritin, and
hematocrit (the percent blood volume made up of red blood cells). Some doctors \viii also test the size and shape of red blood cells. Sometimes the deficiency can be remedied with changes in diet, but many times supplementation is required to boost and maintain iron levels in a person's body. In the diet, there are two types of iron: heme and nonheme sources. Heme sources are derived from hemoglobin and are found in animal products. These are more readily absorbed by the body. Some of the best examples of heme iron are bison meat, beef, liver, clams, oysters, chicken, turkey, some types of fish, and veal. Nonheme iron comes from plants, and the body is less efficient at absorbing them. However, they can be easily found in enriched cereals; kidney, li ma, a nd garbanzo beans; tofu; pumpkin, sesame, and squash seeds; spinach; broccoli; whole grains;

and oatmeal. To get the most out of the iron that you eat, it is best to combine an iron source \vith a vitamin C source to assist absorption. This goes for both supplements and foods. Some of the best vitamin C foods to pair are kiwi, strawberries, citrus, broccoli, and peppers. Many doctors recommend taking supplements with orange juice as a simple way to combine the two. Calcium supplements and calcium rich foods such as milk or yogurt as well as antacids should be avoided in the hours around when the iron is taken because those things hinder the iron's absorption. Increasing iron dosa,ge can upset the stomach and digestive system, so it is a lso important to find a dosage that agrees with your body. Too much iron can also be harmful. It is also important to be patient; restoring iron levels and regaining energy takes time.

The BIGGEST News in Laser Vision Surgery
First-of-Its-Kind "SMILE" Vision Surgery Debuted Statewide in Nashville -- Minimally Invasive New 3D Laser Vision Procedure Performed by Nashville's Internationally Renowned Dr. Ming Wang New Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years) Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for IASIK. This helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SM1LE is also reduced compared with LASH<, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE.
The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was perfo rm ed in Nashvi lle recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its d irector, i nternationally renow ned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). "We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure," said Dr. Wang.
Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. IASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, 30

SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been per¡ formed worldwide . Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.
Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center. He is one of the few cataract and LASIK surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics.
The state's first SMILE patient was Jeremy Westby, 39, a senior vice president of a public relations company. Mr. Westby had poor eyesight all of his life and was excited to be the first patient in Tennessee to receive this exciting new procedure SMILE. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the VisuMax Femtosecond Laser for SM ILE procedure for -1 to -8 D myopia with up
to O.SD astigmatism. During a SMILE procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. 31

Food and Your Health
Connection between Food and your Physical & Mental Health Sadhguru, yogi, mystic and the foremost authority on yoga and Mark Hyman, American physician and bestselling author, explore the connection between the food that we eat and our physical and mental health, as well as possible approaches to change our food system.
M
ark Hyman: One of the que.srions that came from the audience is about the connection benvttn our mind, our mood, our emotional state, our mental health, and the food we eac. Everything from ADD to bipolar disease co depre.ssion could be linked to that. So, what is the ccnneccion between our body and our mind? Sadhguru: The yogic system does not identify body and mind as rwo different entities. Your brains are part of your body. It is just mat what we generally refer ro as mind is a certain amount of memory and intelligence. Berween me rest of me body and me brain, which has more memory, which has more intelligence? If you look at it carefully, your body's memory goes back millions of years. It clearly remembers how your forefathers were. The mind cannot claim mat kind of memory. When it comes to intelligence, what is happening in a single molecule of DNA is so complex that your whole brain cannot figure it out. In the yogic system, mere is a physical body and mere is a mental body. There is an intelligence and memory running right across the body. People generally think the brain is everything just because it handles the thought process. And because of this separation of body and mind, a large number of people in the West are taking antidepressants at some point in their life. The type of food we eat has a huge impact on the mind. An average American is said to consume 200 pounds of meat per yeat: If you bring it down to SO pounds, you will see 75% of the people will not need antidepressants anymore. Meat is a good food to survive if you are out in the desert or the jungle.
If you arc lost somewhere, a piece of meat will keep you going, because it provides concentrated nourish ment. But it should not be a daily food that you eat when there are other choices. There are many ways to look at this. One thing is animals have the intelligence to know in the last few moments mat they are going to get killed, no maner how cunningly or how scientifically you do it. Any animal that has the capaciry to express some kind of emotion will always grasp when it is going to be killed. 32
Suppose all of you come to know right now that at the end of this day, you are going to get sla ughtered. Imagine the struggle that you would go through, the burst of chemical reactions within you. An animal goes through at least some fraction of mar. This means when you kill an animal, the negative acids and whatever other chemicals are in the meat. When you consume the meat, it creates unnecessary levels of mental fluctuations. If you put people who are on antidepressants on a conscious vegetarian diet, in about three months' dme, most of them will not need their medication anymore. For most of those who have become mentally ill, the illness has been culdvared - there is nothing pathologically wrong with them. Such a large percentage of people cannot be mentally sick unless we are culturing it within our social fabric. We should never let commercial forces determine the quality of o ur lives. Commerce is there to serve humaniry. But right now, we have structured the economic engine across the world in such a way that human beings are here to serve the economic and commercial process. You were mentioning the World Economic Forum. When I was there a few years ago, everyone was referring to India, China, and other places as emerging markets. I said, "Please don't refer to people as a market. If you saw them as human beings, maybe you would get the right idea as to what to do with them. If you sec them as a market, you will do a different thing ! This is not a market. These are people." If you don't see people as people, if you don't see life as life, you won't care what you stuff into them. You will want to sell something that makes maximum money for you. It is not in the hands of the politicians and policymakers alone. If everyone realizes the ir physica l a nd particu larly their mental hea lth improves when they change what they eat and how they eat, we will also change the politicians.

Neuropathy ----------------~.~~.
Breakthrough Laser Neuropathy Treatment By Or. Sharon Roth, Roth Wellness & Chiropractic
Dr. Sharon Roth DC at Roth Wellness and Chiropractic will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $45. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. he most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily anti-depressant or anti¡sei4ure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfonable and have a variety of harmful side effeCts.
Flaure 2: The blood vessels will grow back a round the nerves much like a plant's roots arow

T
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causin,g weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased, they shrivel up which causes the nerves to nor ger the nutrientS to continue to survive. When these nerves begin ro "die" they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. As you
The main problem is that your dOCtor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don't like taking because they make you feel uncomfonable. There is now a facility right here in Nashville that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effectS. In order to effectively treat your neuropathy,
three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause?

Nerves Shrivel when Blood Vessels Disappear
I Flcure 1: When these very small blood vessels become diseased, they besin to shrivel up and the nerves becin t o decenerate.
2) How much nerve damage has been sustained? NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss,
there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at Roth Wellness has three main goals: 1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain-based pain The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized infrared light therapy using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow. 33
The amount of tteatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascu lar evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage, there is hopei
Accidents, Injuries and The l aw
Boating Accidents
(WHAT TO DO?) By David E. High, Attorney-At-Law
Accidents involving boats or personal watercraft including waverunners and jet skis are common during the summer months. Unfortunately, some people consume alcohol and attempt to operate a boat or personal watercraft resulting in serious injuries to others.
I
f you are injured in an accident on the water, you should promptly notify the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency and the local sheriff's department or police department so that the accident can be timely and properly investigated. Also, on Corps of Engineer or Tennessee Valley Authority waterways, there are often TVA or Corps Law Enforcement Officers available to also investigate these accidents. Damages to the watercraft at the scene and damages to persons should also be documented promptly with photographs. The names of all witnesses should be gathered.
Act As Soon As Possible Most responsible boat or personal watercraft owners have boater's insurance coverage. Thus, if you are injured due tO the negligent operation of a boat or personal watercraft, you may have a valid claim covered by the liability insurance company of the owner or operator of the vessel. It is very important that you obtain prompt medical care and treatment and that you promptly contact an attorney
who is experienced in dealing with these rypes of cases. Therefore, if you are injured in a boating accident or personal watercraft accident due to the negligence of another, you should promptly contact a qualified and experienced personal injury attorney. Since evidence can be lost and witnesses' memories fade, it is very important that you act as soon as possible so that your claim can be timely and appropriately investigated and your injuries and damages documented. You can be assured that the insurance company adjuster for the liability insurance carrier will be promptly investigating the accident, interviewing the witnesses, obtaining photographs and impor<ant evidence. Therefore, it is important that you promptly retain a competent and experienced attorney so that their representatives and investigators can talk to all the witnesses while the facts are fresh in their mind and obtain photographs and documentation of the physical evidence and damages while that evidence is still available. 34
"No Recovery; No Fee" At High Law Office, PLLC, we have experience rep· resenting persons involved in boating accidents and personal watercraft accidents. If you, or a family member, are a victim of one of these acci· dents, we will review your case on a "No Recovery; No Fee" basis. Dental Health
What do these diseases all have in common? Inflammation occurring throughout the body.
Frequent Dental Cleanings Aid in Controlling Inflammatory Arthritis By Jean-Max Jean-Pierre, D.D.S., M.D.$., Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology
Total health is all about inflammation control. And, th is is where you r local periodontist and dentist come in to be of assistance. They are on the front li nes of helping you prevent, eliminate, and control the oral bacteria that contribute to inflammation throughout your body.
B
ecause May is National Inflammatory Arthritis Awareness Month, this is a good time to remind those with inflammatory arthritis, like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), that maintaining optimal oral health with healthy gum tissue is one of the best things you can do for yourself. First, let us look at some statistics compiled by the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org): • Nearly 53 million adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis; that number is expected to grow to 67 million by 2030. • Almost 300,000 babies, kids and teens have arthritis or a rheumatic condition.
• Arthritis is the nation's No. 1 cause of disability. • Arthritis and related conditions account for more than $156 billion annually in lost wages and medical expenses. • There are nearly 1 million hospitalizations each year due to arthritis.
And here is something for us to ponder: • 57o/o of adults with heart disease have arthritis. • 52o/o of adults with diabetes have arthritis. • 44o/o of adults with high blood pressure have arthritis. • 36o/o of adults who are obese have arthritis. 35
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are inflammatory con· ditions that affect the joints of the body as the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, as well circulating pathogenic microbes. This systemic inflammation affects the synovial membrane (lining) of the joints and other parts of the body. For example, it affects the skin if you have PsA. Inflammatory arthritis is debilitating if left untreated and often leads to severe damage to the joints resulting in permanent disability. Researchers unanimously agree that systemic inflammation is one of the primary factors that can trigger inflammatory arthritis. Recent findings indicate that gum disease (a primary source of systemic inflammation) can make inflamma· tory arthritis worse and may even precede it. Specific oral bacteria and viruses are among the pathogens that easily enter the circulatory system of your body, through the mouth, to set up this systemic inflammatory response that can affect all organs of the body. Optimal oral hygiene at home, a balanced healthy diet, no tobacco use, limited alcoholic beverage intake, stress reduction, and arthritis· friendly exercise routines will not only help control gum disease and your arthritis, but also many other systemic health conditions exacerbated by systemic inflammation. If you have been diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis, it is important that you are regularly examined for gum disease, have frequent dental cleanings in the office of your periodontist or dentist, and immediately accept recommended treatment for any present periodontal disease. Peripheral Neuropathy
Why Do My Feet Hurt? By Gretchen Campbell, M.D., KCA Neurology
There are lots of reasons for foot pain. Sometimes it is due to structural issues such as fallen arches, it could be due to poor circulation, or it could be due to a condition referred to as PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY.
What is periph eral neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is simply a condition whereby the nerves have been damaged. It is a term that loosely refers to nerve damage of all types, but in the medical world, we typically use this term to define nerve damage that starts in the feet and eventually spreads to the hands if left untreated. The typical symptoms (and you don't have to have all of these symptoms) are numbness, ringling, burning, aching or stabbing pain. The pain is sometimes worse at night. Usually the skin is very hypersensitive to touch (so bed linens on your feet may be bothersome.) Initially, the pain may come and go. Later, as the condition progresses, the discomfort may become constant. Nerve pain can be very difficult to manage, especially if the diagnosis is delayed. If it is identified and treated early, outcomes can be very different. Left untreated, neuropathy can progress to cause permanent numbness, weakness and even difficulty with balance.
What are the causes? There are many, many potential causes. The most common cause in the United States are diabetes and alcohol dependence. Other causes include vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, kidney problems and many others. Certain rypes can also be hereditary.
What else could it be? There are other conditions that can have the same symptoms as neuropathy. Pinched nerves in the back, narrowing of the spinal column (spinal stenosis), poor circulation as well as certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies or toxicities. It is important to see a neurologist to determine the root cause of your symptoms. The treatment of these conditions is very different, and sometimes one person can have both peripheral neuropathy as well
as other conditions that cause foot pain. If the conditions are not managed properly, they usually eventually progress.
Did you know? Peripheral neuropathy is the NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF UMB LOSS in the United States. Most neuropathy goes untreated until pain is severe. The more severe the nerve damage, the more difficult it is to treat. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important.
What is the treatment? First, your neurologist should examine you and try to determine the cause of your symptoms. If it is determined that neuropathy is the cause of your foot pain, your neurologist will then need to find out why you have neuropathy in the ftrst place. Don't accept mere pain medications alone as your treatment. There is treatment directed towards increasing the number of nerve fibers which can stabilize the condition and decrease the risk of progression. lYPical medications used to treat the pain associated with neuropathy include Gabape ntin, Lyrica, Cymbalta and others. These medications 37
work to decrease pain, but do not improve the underlying condition. The best treatment involves identification of the cause of the neuropathy (if possible), treatment of the underlying cause, treatment of the pain (with one or a combination of the above medications) and treatment \vith medication aimed at increasing your nerve fiber density which can stabilize the process and decrease the risk of limb loss. Gretchen Cambell, M.D. Dr. Campbell is board certified in neurology, and treats all neurological illnesses including migraines, epilepsy, back pain, neck pain, neuropatlty, pinched nerves, carpal runnel syndrome, multiple sclerosis and a host of other conditions. She offers multiple procedures to determine and treat the root cause of symptoms prior to treatment. Golf and Your Back
1. Pelvic Tilts - work your rectus abdominis, the long strap of muscles that crosses your abdomen from ribs to pelvis. Sit up straight in your chair. Place both feet flat on the floor. Imagine your pelvis is a bucket of water and tilt the bucket back, pressing your lower back against the back of the chair. Repeat. 2. Draw-ins - a strong transverse abdominis muscle helps keep your abdomen flat and support your spinal column as you exercise. Sit up straight, both feet flat on the floor, arms at your side or on the arms of your chair. Take a deep breath in and, as you exhale, imagine that you're pulling your abs as close to your spine as possible. Repeat.
Getting into the Swing... Golf and Lower Back Pain By Christopher K. Taleghan i, M.D. - Board-Certified Neurosurgeon, Pinnacle Surgical Partners
Golf injuries to the back are the most common problems in both the professional and amateur player. It's poor technique and the repetition of similar movements and swings that usually leads to an injury.
M
ost golf related back injuries, specifically center and lower back, result from excessive stress placed on the spine, usually when the body does not perform the correct sequence during the golf swing. According to research, eight times your body weight is forced through your spine as you make contact with the ball. If you have poor golf mechanics combined with a weak back, you are more likely to cause yourself a significant amount of injury, including affecting numerous structures of the lower back like discs, ligaments, muscles or facet joints.
Prevention and treatment A well-trained health professional is able to identify skeletal and muscle imbalanoes and give you correct golf specific exercises to improve your posture and overall conditioning specific for golf. Correct posture and muscle balance will enable you to get into the proper positions required to swing the golf club effectively. Make sure you do golf specific warm up routines before starting to play. Ensure your clubs are fitted properly and that they are not too short. One of the most effective things a golfer can do, and one of the simplest, is core strength and stabiliry training.
Core strengthening Core strengthening aims to improve stabilization and support to the spine by re-training specific trunk muscles that may be under used. Once these stabilizing muscles have been re-trained, the muscles of the arms and legs will have a more stable base to work from, which allows you to carry your arm and leg movements with more control. Core strengthening will provide more support for your back, as well as reduce the risk of back injuries. It will provide a more stable base for arm and leg movements, improving the control and qualiry of your movements. As the stabilizing muscles gain more endurance, you will be able to perform movements without your technique deteriorating excessively, due to fatigue.
Simple and effective strengthening techniques There are many simple and effective core strengthening techniques that you can do while at home, or even while sitting at your desk: 38
3. Knee-ins - force your rectus abdominis, obliques and transverse abdominis to stabilize your spine. Sit halfway forward on the seat of your chair. Squeeze your abs to keep your spine in its natural, neutral curve. Lean back slightly and lift your knees, bringing them in toward your body, and then slowly extend. Repeat.
Minimally invasive option If back pain continues, be sure to consult a neurosurgeon trained in minimally invasive spine surgery, if you must consider a surgical option. There are many advantages to minimally invasive surgery options. Some include shorter hospital stay, less surgical blood loss, less postoperative pain and medicine, and the use of ports to retract muscle tissue instead of destroying it. It is always best to look into something that will be most beneficial to you, and decrease your complications.

He received his Medical Degree at Georgetown University School ofMedicine and completed his Neurosurgery Residency training at Alnnsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Spiritual Wellness
Be Still and Live My name is Christy McGri ff (pictured, left) and I am addicted to busy. That was the summarizing statement of my life before I found freedom in simplicity. I was a corporate junky, always seeking the next b ig project, accomp lishment or pro motion. That was until my loving Savior gave me a big push.
I
'm sure He started with gentle nudges, but I was stubborn and caught up in what I could get from this world rather than what I could give. Through a series of eventS, He exposed me to who I had become. He brought me to the e nd of myself and then He asked me a question. This question pierced my heart and planted a seed deep in my soul - "What do you want your kids to remember about you when you're gone?" As that question began to permeate my soul, I wrote a summary of my life: Life had mentally and physically exhausted me and I was frustrated that I had allowed it to happen. I was constantly running on fumes in all aspects of my life and rarely able to fully enjoy any of it. (2010) That's when it all changed. I chose to live differently. I chose to live the life I was created to live. The result of that one choice is a beautiful picture of
God's grace and mercy and His invitation for me to be a part of His ministry. And so Be Still and Live Ministry was born . Although it began as a gentle but persistent tug on my heart for something more, something beyond myself and my own insecurities, the vision of this ministry has developed into reality. The enemy really knows how to attack us women who are striving to keep up in this "do it all" mentality of the world we live in. We want the best and most for our family, we don't want our kids to be left behind .. and let's just be honest, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others. We care way too much about what other people think of us and our accomplish¡ mentS. Having the best for our child ren a nd our¡ selves is not a bad thing, when we d efine "the best'' as our sweet Jesus defines it, and not by this world's definition. 39
Through the enemy's stronghold of busyness over our lives, he steals the precious life that God has intended for each of us. We are deceived in believing we are living when our days are full of this and that. We are only truly living the full, abundant life that Jesus died for us to live when we are still in His presence. John 10:10 gives us an awesome picture of the life God wantS for us. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full ." My heart's desire is to share my testimony through this ministry so that other women might be encouraged to embark on the journey to the simple life. It is my prayer that "He must become greater; I must become less." (John 3:30), and through this ministry my sweet Jesus, your sweet Jesus, would gently, but persistently rug on your heart to Be Still and Live. Let your less become more. We were created to live differently. You were created to live differently.
