magine there is a bank that would transfer an amount of 86,400 Baht to your account every morning, however the amount would be restricted for use in that day only and at the end of the day the remaining amount left over would be erased from your account. How would you use the money?

Definitely, you would use it all right?!

In our lives, we have a bank just like this, that bank is called the “bank of time” and it transfers 86,400 seconds into your account each and every day. The day will end with zero seconds nothing being left over and you can not transfer more than its set amount. If you fail to use it all to your benefit then it is your own loss. You are not able to go back and try again and you are not able to take from the next day either.

You have to live life in the present using the deposit of “time” given you for the day. Therefore, you have to invest the deposit to get the best results you possibly can. Whether that investment by in your happiness, health, success or the many other things that are important to you.

No doubt the “Clock of life” never ceases to turn, it turns inevitably.

ver 10 times Thailand has been on The United State’s listing for countries with critical violation of intellectual property. However, after a recent status review, Thailand was lowered from this listing and rather put on the U.S Watch List.

Mr. Sontirat Sontijirawong, the Minister of the Ministry of Commerce shared that on December 15th 2017, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced Thailand’s change of status under the Ministry of Commerce in accordance with the intellectual property law Code 301 Exc. From the Priority Watch list down to the Watch List.

The U.S report stated that Thailand’s development of necessary intellectual property violation control and enforcement has proven major implications of serious violation suppression and reform. Therefore, the Thailand’s status has been improved having a positive effect on the country’s image, trade and investments, especially at this time of moving forward Thailand 4.0.

he delay of the construction project to build an underpass to help solve traffic issues in Phuket looks to not have solved much at all. Today the Phuket people have been continually burdened by the bypass construction delay at Chalong Circle for over a year already giving locals no choice but to file a complaint on affiliated authorities in order to get an answer to all the hassle.

Recently, on December 26th at 10am in the conference room at Phuket City School, there was held a project follow up meeting regarding the underpass construction at Chalong Circle including Mr. Aroon Solos the Mayor of Rawai, Mr. Samran Jindapol the Mayor of Chalong, Mr. Somkiat Yimphong the Project Manager as well as other affiliated departments such as Chalong Electrical, Regional Waterworks Phuket and locals who listened in.

Mr. Aroon Solos the Mayor of Rawai shared that due to the long delay on the Chalong Circle underpass construction of over a year and the yet undetermined project completion date, the Phuket people have been caused serious burden effecting the local economy as well as livelihood as a whole.

Therefore, this meeting was held to open the opportunity for concerned locals to ask the questions they have directly to officials from the project’s affiliated departments.

Mr. Somkiat Yimphon the Project Manager shared that the project’s contract was set to begin on July 28th 2015 and finish on December 27th 2017 under a 546 million Baht budget hiring Civil Engineering Co Ltd to carry out the project. Currently, the project has been 30% completed while the cause of delay points towards problems with gaining land rights Monthly Newspaper

“ขณะนี ้ในเรื่องการเวนคืนทีด่ นิ เสร็จสิ ้นแล้ ว ก�ำลังเข้ าสูข่ นตอนการรื ั้ อ้ สาธารณูปโภคต่างๆ ไม่วา่ จะเป็ น ไฟฟ้า ประปา จากนันจึ ้ งสามารถ เริ่มต้ นก่อสร้ างโครงการฯ” นายสมเกียรติ์ กล่าว ขณะที่ นายอัครเดช อ่อนคง ตัวแทนจาก การไฟฟ้าภูมิภาค สาขาต�ำบลฉลอง กล่าวว่า ข้ อติดขัดในเรื่ องเสาไฟฟ้าตังแต่ ้ ราไวย์มาจนถึง ห้ าแยกฉลองที่เหลืออยู่ 4 ต้ นนัน้ เรามีแผนที่จะ เข้ าด�ำเนินการรื อ้ ถอนในวันที่ 11 ม.ค.61 ในส่วนของการย้ ายแนวท่อประปาที่เหลือ อยู่ ตังแต่ ้ วงเวียนห้ าแยกฉลองถึงซุปเปอร์ ชิฟ ระยะประมาณ 200 เมตรนัน้ นายจรงฤทธิ์ เรื อง เดช ตัวแทนจากการประปาส่วนภูมิภาค สาขา ภูเก็ต ชี ้แจงว่า ขณะนี ้อยูใ่ นขันตอนของการส่ ้ ง มอบพื ้นที่จากโครงการ หลังจากนันจะใช้ ้ เวลา ประมาณ 30 วัน ในการย้ ายแนวท่อประปา การประชุมครัง้ นีป้ ิ ดฉากลง ด้ วยข้ อสรุ ป ของ นายสมเกียรติ ยิ ้มพงษ์ นายช่างโครงการฯ ที่วา่ “ดูจากความคืบหน้ าในการแก้ ปัญหาและ อุปสรรคต่างๆ แล้ ว คาดว่าการก่อสร้ างอุโมงค์ ทางลอดห้ าแยกฉลองต้ องใช้ เวลาอีกประมาณ 480 วัน โดยงานก่อสร้ างจะแล้ วเสร็ จสิ ้นเดือน เม.ย.62 โดยในช่วงประมาณเดือน ม.ค.62 น่าจะเริ่ มเปิ ดอุโมงค์บางส่วนให้ รถสามารถวิ่ง ผ่านได้ ”

These are the thoughts of some Singaporean’s who pour themselves into their work though they have the privilege to take off.

A work policy that allows workers to take off any day they desire and still receive full pay seems like a dream for most employees and would likely have most glad to use such privileges. However, in Singapore, the results are rather the opposite of what you would expect.

SGAG, a website company in Singapore, tried this policy in 2015 for only one year before returning to their old policy of just 21 set days off per year due to the majority of their employees choosing to not take off.

Karl Mak, one of the c o m p a n y ’s c o - f o u n d e r s , wanted to create a work culture that allowed employees a better social life with more opportunities for hobbies and other activities that would help create more inspired work and lower the risk of sickness caused by exhaustion.

However, the results of the policy aimed towards this goal created rather opposite results. It ended up that most of the employees wouldn’t take off because they would feel

pressured to work even harder once they returned. “Some even feel wrong to take off while others have to work and others feel they are a burden to those who have to coordinate their work while they are gone.

They would also worry that others would see them as lazy or not hard working, always taking advantage of others.

Fixx Digital, a web design company, is another example of a company that tried the new policy in 2015. Their results showed only to create more problems as well.

Darren Lim, the Executive Manager of the company stated “It turned out that our hardest working employees, the ones we wanted to take off the most, rather took off the least while those who took on a lighter load were more likely take off. Its as if the policy was just a dream, unable to actually work.” Shortly after, the company decided that the new privilege would be only for employees in the company over 1 year who make good work results.

Martin Gabriel Martin Gabriel from a human resources consulting company shared that the solution to the problem shouldn’t actually come done policy but rather finding a way to create balance between employees social and work lives.

We have seen the big businesses working side by side with the government grow rapidly with a buy everything that stands in the way mindset while the debt on SME businesses yet continues to rise.

Recently, deposit account data from the National Bank has made it even more clear showing that those with over 1 million Baht in their deposit account hold a mere 1.7% of the entire national deposit amount. However, looking at those at the top of the wealth pyramid, we see they hold 9.2 trillion Baht from the entire national amount of 12 trillion.

In “Phuket Times” last publish I talked about unlocked various limitations in order to allow Phuket to step up and compete with the leading tourist destinations around the world. I am very confident in Phuket and the Andaman area for its great potential in the tourism industry. The beautiful scenery here is no doubt comparable to most any spot around the world and on top of this is the “Thai hospitality and goodwill” that continues to stands out to most anyone who’s made a trip here time and time again.

The “Thai smile”, a reflection of the Thai identity for the world to see, this is truly our most valuable resource in the tourism industry.

The progress of today’s

technology has caused the business world to flex and adapt to constant change. Maintaining a stable business is contingent upon a business’s ability to keep up with technology.

When I was a child, my family had a small hotel business on Patong Beach. In those days, we just waited for customers to walk right in and book their stay. But as I grew up the hotel business grew as well creating a greater competition. We could no longer just wait for our customers to walk in but had to begin marketing strategies that started even as far as the countries of the tourists coming.

Shortly after, we had to partner with one of the large hotel chains in order to spread our marketing around the world.

“But today the world has yet changed again. Today the internet network has taken hold of the world market allowing small businesses from every corner of the world to market and compete with the large world class hotel chains with

little investment capital.

The online market hasn’t just influenced my family’s small hotel business, but is rather causing changes on every scale of society. Large department stores are even seeing a portion of their customers being taken as online sales continues to grow. The online stores are able to sell almost anything at an even cheaper price. At the same time, businesses like “uber” the online taxi service has quickly spread around the world causing local taxi businesses scrambling to regain control of their own market. This is the trend of this day’s age that we are all facing!

Innovation is changing the world in each and every day and perhaps even every hour.

Everywhere that business is happening, there are constant changes that we are all trying to keep up with. We as human beings all desires time to rest, and that is why “tourism” continues to grow and trend along side with the new

The more we’re stressed and serious the more we need rest and relaxation. It is the norm for most anybody!

Though Thailand is a small country, I am not very surprised at the statistics shown by the World Tourism Organization showing that Thailand has been ranked 3rd for the most foreign revenue earned by tourism led by only the U.S and Spain. This is because of the beautiful scenery and welcoming atmosphere that everyone desires.

Though Thailand is no leader in innovation, I do believe that Thailand is able to be a leader in services. If we can become one of the world’s best in services it would be something we could all be proud of. Let’s aim towards making “Thailand ranked 1st in services” through further developing the quality and standards of our service systems in every area.

In the future we might hear; Thai massage best in the world, Thai waiters best in the world, Thai bartenders best in the world, Thai luggage carrier best in the world or even Thai taxi drivers best in the world and so on. I believe this can really happen if the Thai people set themselves in this direction.

Big goals are set to be achieved!!

THAI STARTUPS RECORD $120M FUNDING IN 2017

t least 13 people were killed Tuesday when a rainstorm sent mud and debris coursing through Montecito neighborhoods and left rescue crews to scramble through clogged roadways and

THAILAND'S RICE EXPORTS REACH RECORD HIGH IN 2017

T

he Thai Rice Exporters Association revealed that rice exports reached a record high last year with most of the demand coming from Benin in West Africa. Thai Rice Exporters Association President, Pol Lt Charoen Laothammatas, said the export of Thai rice grew 20 percent during the first 11 months of last year when a total of 10.4 million tons, worth 156 billion baht, were exported. Rice exports in November last year expanded 47 percent compared with the same month in 2016. The highest demand for Thai rice came from Benin, China, South Africa, Cameroon and the United States.

CABINET GIVES NOD FOR BT35-BN POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAMME

T

he cabinet yesterday approved a Bt35.6billion spending package as part of the second stage of the government’s povertyreduction programme featuring job offers, vocational training, low-interest loans and personalised services for up to 4.9 million low-income people nationwide. According to the government’s database, there are about 11 million Thais whose annual per capita income is less than Bt30,000.

Instead of just handing out subsidy money to this target group, the second-stage programme aims to offer them jobs, provide skill-training, financial help and other prerequisites to alleviate their poverty in a more sustainable style.

NEW MINIMUM WAGE WILL AFFECT SMES

s the government is going to increase minimum wage, at least 15 baht higher, as New Year’s gifts for workers and to become effective end of this month, concern is growing among employers that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will bear the burden. Mr Tanit Soratna, vice president o f t h e E m p l o y e r ’s Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry, said SMEs which form up to 80% of industry will bear the burden of higher minimum wage if it is increased 15 baht higher, or 5%. He said the 5% increase is higher than the inflation rate which is set to be 1.6% this year.

AIRPORTS OF THAILAND (AOT) TO EXPAND 6 AIRPORTS WITH INVESTMENT BUDGET OF 220 BILLION BAHT.

irports of Thailand (AOT) is set to implement expansion development plans for all of its 6 airports in the next 10 years with an investment budget of 220 billion baht. The six major airports include Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, Hat Yai, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai and Mae Fah Luang International Airports. They

are expected to accommodate 100 million more passengers by 2025.

The AOT is currently in the process of expanding Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The expansion began in 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2021.

Once completed, its capacity will be around 45-60 million passengers per year.

officers searched and arrested Mr. Rattaket Chayarat a key culprit in the Eagle Gates Group Co Ltd found cheating victims into making interlocked share investments both in Thailand and overseas with a total share loss of over 1.7 billion Baht.

Pol. Col. Phaisit Wongmuang, the General Director of the Special Cases Investigation Department announced concerning the arrest of the overseas criminal activity under Eagle Gates Group Co Ltd that after further investigation it was found that the mention company started up in Thailand in 2016 without registering its business activities to the Thai government. The business activities thereof include cheating clients into buying interlock shares in an overseas trade index assuring profitable results of at least 100% return. The company built a trustworthy “image” by hosting training seminars in luxury hotels all over the country bringing in over 1000 clients.

Pol. Col. Phaisit Wongmuang also shared that at this time they have already caught 10 affiliates, 8 of which were foreign and 2 of which were Thai. Those caught were married couples while those who escaped during the arrest are another 8 including one of which named Eddy McClough the CEO of Eagle Gates Co Ltd. Eddy McClough has been previously charged with similar cases overseas as well as investigation search cases in 8 different locations throughout Thailand including Bangkok, Pattaya and Prae before some of his property was seized.

hailand’s reputation of LGBT acceptance has it marked as the LGBT Capital in Asia by many foreign media groups.

From an analysis made by LGBT Capital, results showed that Thailand has a total foreign revenue of 17 billion dollars produced from LGBT tourists. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has pushed marketing towards high spending tourist’s groups such as LGBT. It is very clear that the LGBT group will continue to have much importance in Thailand tourism in the future.

In order to create a better understanding of the LGBT group, Phuket Times took the opportunity to interview Napat Kittitaweekun a 32-year-old businessman from Nakorn Sri Thammarat who has advanced the Zag Club from a ordinary bar into a key location for LGBT

“I have to say before anything else that though I am the owner of the Zag Club which markets to the LGBT group, I am straight and have a family of my own.” Napat Kittitaweekun I actually never worked nights beforehand, I enjoy regular work hours just like anybody else getting my bachelors in Marketing. How I got into this business was through an opportunity presented by a close elder of mine that I respect very much like a father. He gave me the opportunity and I am the kind of person that if I’m going to do something I’m going to make sure it succeeds. Basically, I had to do everything starting out trying to learn everything on my own whether it be ownership or accounting or even serving tables. This is our 5th year now and running the club full time.

It is certainly different, before the club was separated into 2 zones which were My Ways Bar and Zag Club with another business set in between both zone which today is the disco zone in our club. While I was first managing the club that center business was selling out and the man who gave me this opportunity originally told me “Up to you Napat, if you want to let see someone else get rich instead just let them buy the business”. When I heard him say that I decided to be buy the business and turn into our disco zone completing the 3 zones we have here in our club today.

Zag Club for me first I like to picture it as if I were the customer and what I would want or expect to get on my trip. So, I first decided I would not go with the “gay bar” concept but to try to accommodate every people group with the best entertainment and service possible. I am always reminding

my staff to take care of each customer equally and fairly. As for the shows performed, we try to provide a variety of style and color that is fun such as our street show out front, our lip sync entertainment, dance and even model runway.

However, such entertainment is always up to change since our greatest focus is to provide entertainment that is new and different. You could say that is our concept here at Zag Club.

I will ask customers on a daily basis what they think of the service, shows, cleanliness etc. at Zag Club and if there’s anything to improve.

After closing I will then take the time to gather the staff together to discuss the feedback and look for different solutions to allow better service for the next day.

Today the street shows out front Zag club has become a magnet attracting not just the LGBT group but tourists front every group of people. Mr. Naphat believes that this is only the beginning of what the Paradise Complex will exclusively offer.

“Today Zag Club may just be another option of entertainment for the LGBT group, but in the next 3 years, Zag Club will become the “can’t miss” central tourist entertainment center of Phuket.”

THE LEGEND OF THE FLYING DUTCHMAN

T

here’s probably no haunted ship more well known than the Flying Dutchman that has brought fear into waters all around the world and even inspired main forms of artistic presentation whether it be paintings, horror tales, opera or movies such as the Pirates of the Caribbean. The ships origin however is from the book “Voyage” first written near the end of the year 1700.

Since then the tale has become more and more well-known spreading throughout the world.

The legend is told that a Dutch Captain named Van Der Decken led his ship into an evil climate near the tip of Cape Good Hope, South Africa. He tried rigorously to drive his ship through the turbulent storm but to no avail ended up merely shipwrecked. He was so angry at his circumstance that he swore to the sky saying “I will sail these seas till the sky falls and the land is no more.” And so it happened as he swore, his ship became possessed by a certain evil enslaving him to sail the seas forever, never able to sail home till the world’s end.

The Flying Dutchman has been recorded since the 17 hundreds being reported in different fashions from time to time up till the 20th century. The Flying Dutchman is often reported to be found amongst deep fog or as a peculiar light in the darkest hours of night. Its appearance is described as a 3-mask sailboat driven by a crooked faced captain dressed in clothes of a past era laughing and screaming with evil delight. Its no wonder many consider their doom when they have encountered this spectacle.

In 1881, King George the 5th discovered this mysterious and immense vessel ahead of his ship’s bow at around 4am. Only a few days later the main mask crewmember fell to his death upon the ships deck.

Even till this day the fright of the Flying Dutchman’s is still told as it continues to sorrowfully roam the seas till the end of days.

Scientists have been finding some explanation to the Flying Dutchman’s phenomenon as a certain natural refraction or reflection of light found in the sea such as mirage, fatah or morgana.

h Tao: Similar to fried clam except not crispy. The flour used to fry Oh Tao is more dense and sticky than that used for fried clam (or oyster). It is also served with pork rind, steamed taro cubes, fried onion and black pepper.

Oh Tao is often eaten with bean sprouts and self-seasoned. Pricing is from 45 – 50 Baht or for oyster 70 – 80 Baht.

h Pong: A thin fried shell made from a mild dough. The main ingredients are flour, coconut milk and sugar. It is made by frying the dough on a hot plate like a pancake. When the dough is cooked it is then rolled into a tube-like form.

Traditionally, Phuket people used to eat this snack with coffee in the afternoons.

TAKUAPA OLD TOWN ‘T akuapa’ or originally known as ‘Takola’ is one of the charming town of Phang Nga province that is famous for its unique Baba culture and its attractive nature. Old town Takuapa used to be a center of tin mining where Chinese and European traders were all there to trade and work with locals. This left Takuapa with the beautiful unique culture and way of life, which make the town become of one the must-see destination when you are visiting Phang Nga. The word ‘Baba’ is used called a son who is half blood between local mother and foreign traders father. While the half-blood daughter of them is call ‘Nyaonya’. Later on, both male and female are called Baba.

Each culture is different, but it is a perfect match. Sino-Portuguese architect is an example of perfect combination of cultures, the mixture of styles between Chinese, Portuguese, and locals. We find them both sides along the walking Takuapa Old Town walking street.

Takuapa walking street market or The Culture Street market is organized every Sunday during November to May every year. The market opens from 3pm to 8pm where visitors can enjoy variety of activities including local food and drink vendors, performances, and especially enjoy feeling the real way of local life. The must-try local foods are Kanom MorSi, Kanom Kiev Koi, Kanom Bueng, Kanom Kosui, local sausage, and many others.

However, for those who visit Takuapa in different period as mentioned above, in green season, visitors can still enjoy some activities such DIY of Kanom Tao Sor, Street Art, and those top attractions nearby including Kuan U Shrine, Khok Kanoon bridge, Tao Ming School, Senarangsan Buddhist temple, and Kun In – Kampheng Kai community.

Shopping is also available for whole years in those local stalls along the side of

the road and in town, where you can shop souvenir, food, drink, coffee, and others.

Therefore, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has so far strongly support and help to boost Takuap tourism, aiming to generate more income flow to locals people. Lately, TAT has cooperated with Takuapa local authority to open up the Khao Lak – Takuapa route under the concept of Takuapa Old Town. The route will be open from February to May 2018.

Phuket, best known for its beautiful beach resorts, has now earned yet another distinction – inclusion on the UNESCO Creative Cities listing for its gastronomic delights.

PHANG NGA TIGHTENS UP BEACH REGULATIONS

T

ourists protest looking to tour elsewhere On December 25th 2017, it was reported that at Khuek kak Beach, Takuapa, Phang Nga, there were about 10 tourists who came to rest and relax on the beach that raised signs in protest concerning a recent announcement made

by Phang Nga authorities to stop all types of building or table/chair setup within the beach areas. This makes the tourists unable to rest and do activities on the beach as they had before previously. Therefore, they stated in protest that if the government doesn’t resolve the issue then they will choose to no longer tour Thailand.

As for the beach area mentioned above, the recent regulations set by the Phang Nga Beach Order Department that prohibit all forms of soliciting within the Khuek Kak Beach area will still allow time for vendors to continue sales until January 5th 2018 in transition.

25 ธ.ค.60 ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า บริ เวณหาดคึกคัก อ.ตะกัว่ ป่ า จ.พังงา มีนกั ท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติ ที่เดินทางมาพักผ่อนบริ เวณชายหาดแห่งนี ้ ประมาณ 10 คน ได้ ร่วมกันชูปา้ ยคัดค้ าน กรณีจงั หวัดพังงาได้ ตดิ ประกาศ ห้ ามก่อสร้ างศาลา เพลิงพัก สิง่ ปลูกสร้ างใดๆ รวมทังจั ้ ดวางโต๊ ะ เตียง หรื อ ที่นงั่ บริ เวณพื ้นที่ชายหาด ซึง่ ท�ำให้ นกั ท่องเที่ยวไม่สามารถพักผ่อน และ ท�ำกิจกรรมบริ เวณชายหาดได้ อย่างสะดวกสบายเหมือนกับปี ที่ผา่ นๆ มา ระบุหากทางราชการไม่แก้ ไขปั ญหาก็จะไปท่องเที่ยวที่ประเทศอื่นแทน ส�ำหรับหาดทรายบริ เวณดังกล่าว คณะท�ำงานจัดระเบียบชายหาด จังหวัดพังงา ได้ มีมติ ไม่อนุญาตให้ บุคคลใดๆ ท�ำการค้ าขายบริ เวณ ชายหาดต�ำบลคึกคัก อ�ำเภอตะกัว่ ป่ า จังหวัดพังงา และไม่อนุญาตให้ ใช้ พื ้นที่ นสล. ในการเยียวยาผู้ได้ รับผลกระทบจากการจัดระเบียบชายหาด โดยอนุโลมให้ เฉพาะผู้ที่ท�ำการค้ าขายอยูก่ ่อน ท�ำการค้ าขายได้ จนถึงวัน ที่ 5 มกราคม 2561 และให้ ด�ำเนินการจัดระเบียบชายหาดให้ แล้ วเสร็ จ ภายในวันที่ 5 มกราคม 2561
