T

he well-known research study “Harvard Study of Adult Development” from Harvard University notorious for being the longest research study in the world is a study of adult development for “true happiness”. The research study has been running for a solid 75 years now changing through 4 generations of research supervisors.

The research study began with a study on two teenage boy groups. The first group was 268 boys from a sophomore class in Harvard University while the second group was 456 boys ages 12 – 16 years old who were born and raised in Boston totaling 724 people in the study.

Every 2 years the research team would administer examinations for the 724 boys regarding their contentment with life including areas such as work, social and personal life. The research team would also visit the boy’s homes to interview and talk with family.

Lastly, every 5 years the boys would receive a physical examination as well.

Throughout the entire study of the 724 boys, the research team saw the boys grow every year as they received new duties and responsibilities and climbed their way to success in society.

However, there was still not a small number of whom encountered failure even pushing some through heavy disappointment and despair ending in drugs and alcohol.

are 60 still living all of which are over 90 years old. From a long-term research study on their lives, the research team learned that wealth, reputation or even a good job is not the answer to a happy life.

From the 75 years of research, results found that those who give importance to “making good relationships with those around them” will be the ones to find true happiness.

Robert Waldinger, the current research supervisor, stated that most people would think that fame and money would bring them happiness more easily and this is why most choose to focus on work and earning money. They also often think that relationships are very delicate and complicated, that you must be always caring and thoughtful which is very difficult to do.

However, good relationships can be developed quite easily.

Just lifting your head from your phone, looking the person next to you in the eyes and asking them to do something new together can bring life back into the relationship.

PRIVATE SECTOR PUSHES BANGLA ROAD TOWARDS BEST WALKING STREET IN THE WORLD

ecently, at The Bay and Beach Club Patong, Pol ColAnothai Jindamanee from the Patong Police Station and Mr. Preechawut Keesin joined a press conference concerning tourist safety on Patong Beach and the private sector’s push to evaluate “Bangla Road” public safety directed towards creating the “Best walking street in the world”.

Mr. Preecha Keesin stated that “Bangla Road” at Patong Beach is an important model tourism city in Thailand and internationally recognized.

However, do to the restrictions of Thai law in certain areas, the potential revenue of this area has been limited.

Therefore, Patong Patana Foundation has joined with Ratchapat University to research and evaluate the potential, opportunities and effect of this area as well as

related laws in order to push Bangla Road forward towards becoming the best walking street in the world. Upon concluded evaluation, an economically appropriate system will be presented to the government and related departments for further processing.

“As for safety and cleanliness system procedures, I can say that Bangla Road has the best in the country. The police, military and security department of Phuket has given this situation the highest priority with consistent patrol able to service tourists quickly and efficiently. Also, Patong has the most CCTV cameras with the best local monitoring network. Therefore, let everyone be assured that they can come on tour worry free.”

THE FESTIVAL THAT HAS BEEN WITH PHUKET PEOPLE FOR A LONG TIME

H

ello, everyone! This time I took you to know about the Por Toh festival or Chinese hungry ghost festival of Phuket province. Por Toh, the Chinese Hokkian word means helping others out of misery by the rite of charity the dedicate merit to ancestors, which is shown about the descendants gratitude. The festival has inherited from old generation to new generation more than 100 years but no one has known when the origin of festival. Por Toh festival was held on the 1st day of the 7th month waxing moon, based on Chinese calendar. And the Phuketians also believed that the ghost gate opened on the 30th day of 6th month then ancestor spirits, and ghosts travelled in human world about 1 month so Phuket people held the ceremony to offer the food ancestors and ghosts.

And the symbol of Por Toh Festival is red turtle cake; it is cooked by mixing between wheat flour and sugar and molded or put into turtle shape molding which size maybe big or small as someone like then it is painted with red color. For rich people, they order the big size of red turtle cake while normal people order the small size. And after the ceremony, the participants could get the red turtle cake back to their home and pray the good thing and next year they will come back the shrine with red turtle cake because they fulfill one’s hope. The result of using turtle shape, turtle is the symbol of long live. And in the past, Phuket people captured turtles to pay respect in the festival, then they couldn’t fine some turtle so they made red turtle cake to pay respect in the festival instead of real turtle.

A

s 30 years of change swept over Phuket Island, the end of the booming tin age concluded and the start of the tourism age began. Likewise, the Thawornworngwong family name, one of the biggest in Phuket transitioned into the business of tourism with the opening of 3 luxury hotels located in Phuket town, Karon and Kamala. Though business was doing well, the Thai financial crisis known as “Tom yam Kung 40” along with a heavy hit on the foreign revenue market greatly shook Phuket. This crisis changed everything, especially consumer behavior causing local business to crumble to pieces. The Thawornworngwong network was also forced to meet such fate with an accumulating debt of over 3 billion Baht.

Mr. Charoen Thawornworngwong, the eldest heir of the Thawornworngwong line still in his early 30s not only had to constantly bear the pressure of such debt but also faced a wave of ridicule and mockery from the social world. In such a time of despair, it was only his faith and confidence in God that helped him push forward.

“During those 30 years in debt, I had to work together 30 million Baht each month to pay off the interest. My suffering during those days was no different than the journey of Moses in the

wilderness as he led the Israelites out of Egypt into the land of Canaan for 40 years.”

Today I have worked past that difficult time in my life and restored honor to the “Thawornworngwong” name. Today I don’t have a single Baht of debt and in fact the 23 billion Baht in assets I had before paying off the 3 billion Baht debt was reassessed at 30 billion Baht.

Both of our beach hotel locations are doing well with almost 100% full accommodations year round and now we are preparing to launch a new project by remodeling our hotel into a perfect Phuket museum. We already have the resources and history necessary and are excited to tell everyone who is interested and on tour.

“VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL”

the Most Revered Festival of Phuket Island W

hen we talk about custom of Phuket province, everyone must consider to “Vegetarian Festival”; this is the very unique festival and tourists from worldwide also feel interested to join with the festival.

Vegetarian Festival or Hokkian Chinese in Phuket call “Jia Chai” which means vegetable eating, which festival that has been inherited for long time is in Tao doctrine to pay respect to gods, deities, and ancestors. The festival was occurred the first time in 1825 at Kathu district when Phraya Thalang (Jerm) moved to Ket Ho village, the village was tin resource. While the village was the large forest and the Malaria scourged over there, then there were the Chinese opera performers from Chinese to come to show at Phuket Island and they also infected the disease like villagers.

So the performers held the vegetarian ceremony to pay respect to gods, the names were “Kiw Aong Tai Te” and “Yok Aong Song Te”. And villagers has

done as the festival of year from the past until now when villagers knew.

So Vegetarian Festival has been inherited for long time which is held on the 1st to 9th day of the waxing moon on the 9th lunar month, based on Chinese calendar, or every October. It held around 9 days to bring blessings to themselves.

And the highlight of the festival which is interested by tourists is the supernatural power show from “haunted persons by deities”; who are selected to be haunted persons by deities must be possessed by some deity more than 3 years, then any haunted persons by deities are registered as medium by any shrine.

And at least 1 day of vegetarian periods, Phuket people must eat the food from any shrine because they believe that this is a blessing for their life.

“ประเพณีถอื ศีลกินผัก” ประเพณีสุดยิ่งใหญ่ ของเกาะภูเก็ต เมื่อพูดถึงวัฒนธรรมประเพณีของจังหวัด ภูเก็ต ทุกคนต้ องนึกถึง “ประเพณีถือศีลกิน ผัก” อย่างแน่นอน ซึง่ มีความเป็ นเอกลักษณ์ เฉพาะตัวเป็ นอย่างมาก และเป็ นประเพณี นักท่องเที่ยวให้ ความสนใจเข้ าร่วมประเพณี นี ้เป็ นจ�ำนวนมาก ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก หรื อที่ชาวจีนฮกเกี ้ยน ในจังหวัดภูเก็ตเรี ยกว่า “เจี๊ยะฉ่าย” ที่แปลว่า กินผัก โดยเป็ นประเพณีตามคติความเชื่อของ ลัทธิเต๋าในการบูชาเซียน เทพเจ้ า วีระบุรุษ ซึง่ เป็ นประเพณีที่สืบทอดกันมาช้ านาน เกิดขึ ้น ครัง้ แรกที่อ�ำเภอกะทู้ ในปี พ.ศ. 2368 พระยา ถลาง (เจิม) ได้ ย้ายเมืองถลาง มาตังที ้ บ่ ้ านเก็ต โฮ่ ซึง่ อุดมไปด้ วยแร่ดีบกุ แต่บริ เวณดังกล่าว เป็ นป่ าทึบท�ำให้ เกิดโรคไข้ ป่าระบาดไปทัว่ ต่อมามีคณะงิ ้วจากเมืองจีนมาเปิ ดการแสดง และเกิดล้ มเจ็บลง คณะงิ ้ว จึงได้ ประกอบพิธี กินผักขึ ้น เพื่อบวงสรวงเทพเจ้ า “ กิ๋วอ๋องไต่ เต่ ” และ “ ยกอ๋องซ่งเต่ ” เมื่อชาวบ้ านทราบ เรื่ องจึงเกิดความศรัทธาและปฏิบตั สิ ืบต่อกัน

มาจนกระทัง่ ปั จจุบนั ดังนันประเพณี ้ ถือศีลกินผักจึงได้ ถกู สืบทอดมา จนปั จจุบนั โดยจัดขึ ้นตังแต่ ้ วนั ขึ ้น 1 ค�่ำ ถึงวัน ขึ ้น 9 ค�่ำ เดือน 9 ตามปฏิทินจีน หรื อตรงกับ เดือนตุลาคมของทุกปี รวม 9 วัน 9 คืน เพื่อ ความเป็ นมงคลแก่ตนเอง ซึง่ ในประเพณีถือศีล กินผักจะมีขบวนแห่งของแต่ละศาลเจ้ าใน จังหวัดภูเก็ต และจะมีสิ่งที่เป็ นที่สนใจของนัก ท่องเทีย่ ว คือ การแสดงอิทธิฤทธิ์เหนือธรรมชาติ ของ “ม้ าทรง” ซึ่งคนที่จะถูกเลือกเป็ นม้ าทรง ต้ องมีองค์เทพมาประทับร่างมากกว่า 3 ปี จึง จะมีการขึ ้นทะเบียนประวัติม้าทรง และในระยะเวลาของการถือศีลกินผักจะต้ อง มี 1 วันที่ชาวภูเก็ตจะต้ องรับประทานอาหาร จากศาลเจ้ า เพราะเชื่อว่าจะท�ำให้ เกิดความ เป็ นมงคลแก่ชีวิต ขอขอบคุณข้ อมูลจาก นายกิตติวงค์ จันทร์ สทั ธรรม ประธานศาลเจ้ าจุ้ยตุย่ เต้ าโบ้ เก้ ง
