The Charms of Miss Siam

Photos by Paul Hutton Bangkok s Hua Chang Heritage Hotel has unveiled a food and drink venue exemplifying the many ways in which Thailand s cuisine reflects the country s essence. At Miss Siam Restaurant guests can enjoy Thai recipes passed down through the generations. Indeed, defining aspects of Thai culture unfold during every meal. In the Old Siam of past centuries, a lady s cooking skill was essential to her allure. Hence the Thai proverb, Cooking works like a charm . And because Siamese ladies were blessed with a tropical clime that

yielded so much from land, river and sea, they were afforded abundant ingredients to create new and intriguing dishes for husband and family. Now all can experience the same bountiful and sophisticated cookery for which Thailand is renowned at Miss Siam. Creating that experience is Executive Chef Pairos Prapairak (Chef Bombay, above). His menu draws from Thailand s timehonoured recipes encompassing not only homecooked comforts but also dishes served during special occasions, in addition to a number of regional specialties. Two signature aromatic

herb drink creations

Chef Pairos artistry is based on the fundamentals of Thai cuisine, vital among them a skilful selection and combination of ingredients, notably fresh herbs, famous for both their flavour and health benefits. An allday restaurant serving breakfast, lunch/brunch and dinner, Miss Siam features Thai and international buffets, a live cooking station and an à la carte menu offering special seasonal dishes. Menu highlights include signature crispy deepfried prawn wrapped with pancake rolls and Thai spicy shrimp paste dip with fried mackerel. Guests likewise will delight in all flavours essential to Thai cooking spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitter in dishes such as chef s special mixed style chicken, pork and beef satay; spicy grilled beef sirloin salad with fresh herbs and grapes; lamb curry with longan; and deepfried sea bass topped with sweet chilli sauce. Traditional Thai desserts include Thai fresh fruits of the season in syrup,

sweet sticky rice with mango, and chilled water chestnut in grenadine syrup. The restaurant s setting provides Rattanakosinera splendour amid an interior design merging Thai and European elegance. Decorative elements include ceiling beams reminiscent of traditional teak homes, yet in gleaming white, and a mirrored wall bearing a striking lotus flower image. Seating capacity is 50 guests in the restaurant s main dining area. Windows look out to the hotel s lovely tropical garden and freeform swimming pool, around which guests also can choose to enjoy their meal in an outdoor dining area holding up to 40 people for specially arranged occasions. The exalted, centuriesold traditions of Thai cuisine live on at Miss Siam, where guests today are certain to be enchanted. Miss Siam opens daily from 10.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.

Hua Hin

Retreat With Distinction

Anantara Resort Hua Hin Provides a Perfect Getaway The Anantara Resort in Hua Hin is no secret to many Bangkok residents, who have already discovered how easy it is to escape from the daily grind by retreating within the confines of the Thai village style property for a day or two of rest and relaxation. Many tourists have also realized that the retreat is a perfect place to lock

yourself away from the world and just relax. With everything you need right there within the compound many people rarely even venture out into the nearby town. The resort even offers a retreat within a retreat, with private facilities reserved just for the wealthy and famous.

Page 23 www.bangkokscene.com

Many a celebrity has chosen to spend some time here over the years.

Golf courses are within easy reach, as are elephant trekking paths.

Sitting directly on the beachfront, Anantara Resort Hua Hin sits among lush gardens with lakes, pools and waterfalls at every turn.

There are 187 rooms and suites at the resort, but vacancies are rarely found at weekends, even in low season. Three or four day stays during the week can be booked with more certainty, however, as Bangkok residents head back to meet work commitments.

Guests can relax in the friendly waters of the Gulf of Thailand, beside the gigantic swimming pool, on benches and covered sofas in the garden area and within their own four walls in the well appointed luxury suites. The resort makes for a perfect romantic getaway. Other facilities include tennis courts, a cookery school, gym facilities, three restaurants, a spa and a cocktail lounge. There are bicycles for hire for the more energetic, although a shuttle bus runs back and forth to the nearby town of Hua Hin from early afternoon until late evening.

One guest who is always present and is provided free accommodation 365 days a year is Alex, the talking parrot who charms kids and parents alike from his perch close to the Issara Café.
