THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN The Emperor of Canvas Celebrates 74 Years with Seven Artistic Colleagues It's been five decades since Thailand's world famous artist Thawan Duchannee, also known as the Emperor of Canvas, began creating
wondrous art with genius brush strokes. This wellrounded artist, skilled in painting, sculpting, architecture, literature and creative design, can
Page 8 www.bangkokscene.com
cleverly adapt Buddhist teaching to inspire his works of art, making him renowned for connecting the west and the east. Last year, the Suriyaphumijakkavan Medallion was created to celebrate his 73rd birthday and was a huge success. Designed by Thawan Duchanee, the medallion was inspired by one of his masterpieces, Suriyakoltolprapa, which is a wall decoration at the heart of the 700 year old Crottorf Castle, in Friesenhagen, Germany.
Thawan had been invited by Count Hermann Graf Hatzfeldt to paint the room 35 years ago, and was famously paid a blank cheque , which received widespread attention at the time. The medallion was created in three variations gold, silver and bronze, boasting exquisite detail and ultimate value. This year, to mark his 74th birthday anniversary, a special event has been
Page 9 www.bangkokscene.com
Page 10 www.bangkokscene.com
organised to introduce the special medallion as well as to auction art works by seven artists who have been inspired by Thawan. The 7+1 Inspiration by the Greatest Artist THAWAN DUCHANEE 74th event opened at the Hall of Mirrors at Siam Paragon on December 13th. On this occasion to celebrate the 74th birthday anniversary of a legendary artist, seven artists have brought their art works, inspired by Thanwan, to showcase in the event, including Suriyaphumijakkavan accessories set which features necklaces, bracelets and rings, created and curated by Doytibet Duchanee, Meed Mang Fa created by Minna Panyaloed, necklaces, bangles and rings made from natural materials and animal horns by Attapol Kamwong, leather work by Rewat Deekaew, Baandam photography using traditional techniques
and infrared by Martin Reeves, clothes from Nagara by Nakorn Sampantarak, and special performances, designs and fashion by Pete Boonsanan. Guests got to meet the unique artist Thawan, witnessed the Suriyaphumijakkavan medallions and special sculptures of 39, 69 and 99 cm, as well as the three variations of the Suriyachantraipop Medallion. The art works by the seven artists were auctioned and an impromptu painting by Thawan took place. Proceeds, after expenses, will go to the establishment of a foundation for conserving art, culture and education, scholarships for outstanding art students and improving artists houses in Chiang Rai as learning centres.

When Ocean Bangkok opened in Sukhumvit 33 this month, it brought a sense of relaxed beachside chic to the city s urban sprawl. Offering the unique feel of Hua Hin, Pattaya or Rayong, without the drive, Ocean sits within metres of bustling Sukhumvit Road. Built around a stunning pool lounge, with 18 stylish yet affordable superior and deluxe guestrooms along two sides, Ocean promises to deliver cool sounds from world class DJs from early evening onwards in sophisticated surroundings. Relaxing times are also to be had, with poolside massages provided by the White Ocean Spa, and delicious Mediterranean Asian fusion cuisine served up by The Ocean Gastro Bar and Restaurant. The man behind the dishes is executive chef Jacobo Astray, who previously worked at the world famous el Bulli restaurant in Spain. Hot and cold tapas feature strongly on the menu, which features intriguing items such as Grilled Goat Cheese with Prawns, Berries Sauce and Cashew Nuts, Duck Foie Gras with Pumpkin, Lemon Cru Style and Mangosteen Sauce, Pork Teriyaki in a Sesame Cone, Yellow Crab Curry in a Charcoal Cone, Paella and Deconstructed Spanish Omelette with Spicy Chorizo. KNIGHTSBRIDGE SOPHISTICATION Harrods Opens First Tea Room in Thailand at Siam Paragon When Harrods Tea Room opened on the ground floor of the trendy shopping mall earlier this month, it became only the third such iconic Harrods store in Asia, following on from recent openings in Tokyo (The Plantation) and Kuala Lumpur (Harrods Cafe). But plans are already afoot for another two branches in the soon to be completed Central Embassy and Central Groove malls.
Although guests are welcomed with an array of high teas, gourmet coffees and a huge sweets and pastry selection, Harrods offers much more, with Chef Suwan Jantagav busy cooking up British favourites like Bangers n Mash, Fish n Chips, Roast Beef and Beef Wellington. Also on offer are pasta and risotto dishes, and mouthwatering items like Blue River Prawn Thermidor, Spicy Crab Cakes and Scallops and Bacon Arrows.
Page 20 www.bangkokscene.com
Harrods Tea Room is also open for breakfast, serving Breakfast Baskets, Truffles Benedict, Foie Gras Gourmet Sandwiches and the signature Knightsbridge Breakfast.
which sits directly opposite. Here shoppers can purchase a little bit of Britain, in the shape of teas, toys, hampers, bags, coffees, cookies, chocolates and key rings.
The shop opened on December 5th, and can be found on the ground floor (the basement if approaching from the Skytrain) close to the Food Hall.
The teddy bears are sure to grab the attention of young uns, as they are dressed to impress as British Bobbies, Highland Scots and Tower of London Beefeaters.
With seating for 88 people, the Tea Room consists of a main dining area, a mezzanine level, and a separate souvenir shop,

The Siam Luxury Riverside Retreat is a Tribute to Thailand s Heritage Wandering around the impressive hotel is almost akin to visiting a museum; there are antiques and old artifacts proudly on display at every turn. The history of the Thai monarchy is detailed in old photographs, paintings and newspaper articles, and rubbing up alongside are historical items from China, ancient Buddha statues, posters from bygone Olympics and displays of old movie and photographic equipment.
Historic Thai houses have been transplanted into a modern luxury spa retreat that provides everything and more for an idyllic stay on the peaceful banks of the River of Kings. For the more energetic there are personal Muay Thai lessons to be had in the gym s own boxing ring.
Page 31 www.bangkokscene.com
There is almost no need to venture from within the three acre property; once you have brushed up on your local history there are wellness sessions to involve yourself in at the delightfully named Opium Spa, movie screenings in the private theatre, complete with reclaimed fold down seats from an old movie house, and cocktails to sip from the Bathers Bar as you lounge beside the infinity pool set among manicured lawns that run alongside the river and the hotel s private jetty. Trips to the city are easy via the Skytrain station at Saphan Taksin using the hotel s own ferry service that takes about 20 minutes each way.

The hotel also boasts a Hammam inspired bath house complete with saunas and steam rooms, the signature Thai restaurant, Chon, the homely Deco Bar and Bistro and the all day patisserie, Café Cha, complete with its own private garden and verandah. Renowned architect Bill Bensley designed the 39 room resort from ideas conceived by creative director and celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp, best known in his homeland as the lead singer of indie rock band Pru. Krissada already had a huge collection of antiques when he inherited the prime land, and The Siam was designed as a unique repository designed to entice locals and tourists alike.
