New Anantara Phuket Layan Resort and Spa
Anantara has hit another milestone with the opening of their 30th property the stunning new Anantara Phuket Layan Resort and Spa. Layan is located on the west coast of Phuket, so unlike the majority of Phuket s beaches, it is one of the last untouched areas on the island. The resort itself borders on the Sirinath Marine National Park so days can be spent tranquilly under the shade of the tall coconut and pine trees that border the beach. If you re kayaking and snorkelling in and around the resort s lagoon area you may just spot one of the forty green turtles that were recently released with the aim to rejuvenate their depleting numbers so they can return to the beach and lay their eggs. This will become a yearly event for guests to join in to make a positive contribution to the area while on holidays. If your days are not filled exploring the hidden beaches and inlets around the resort, Anantara offers a truly different Phuket experience with local market visits with the executive chef to shop for ingredients for your Spice Spoons cooking class, Dine By Design with your own private chef at sunset or a traditional fishing experience with the locals. Once back at the resort guests can relax around the pool, indulge in an indigenous treatment at the Anantara Spa or relax in their own private pool villa. The splendid new resort offers nine different room types across 77 luxurious suites and villas on 400 metres of secluded beach, including a Two Bedroom Family Pool Villa, two Two Bedroom Pool Villas and a vast 485 square metre Anantara Pool Villa. With direct beach access, a private pool and extensive outdoor areas of more than 200 square metres, the Anantara Pool Villa is the ultimate tropical island retreat, accommodating up to six adults. In addition to the hotel, a high end residential project is under development on an adjacent hillside with panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. Anantara Residences Phuket Layan will consist of sixteen expansive units ranging from two to five bedrooms.
Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2014 Local and international stars of stage and screen paraded along the red carpet at Siam Paragon last week as Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2014 held a closing ceremony at the shopping centre s Pavalai Royal Grand Theatre. Awards were presented for The Amazing Thailand Film Challenge and for the second annual Contribution to the Thailand Production Services Industry. The Amazing Thailand Film Challenge involved 112 film-makers, including both students and professional film-makers, spreading across Thailand over eight days in April to make a short film capturing the spirit of a region of Thailand. An international recruitment campaign was seen by over 200,000 film-makers and resulted in entries from all over the world. Film-makers were given air tickets, accommodation while in Bangkok, and a small budget for travelling outside Bangkok. They had to supply the equipment, the ideas, and the talent. They then raced to edit and complete their short films, which were screened for judges and for the film-makers on 28th April.

CITY - LIVES - STORIES
A unique exhibition by Suthirak "Por" Rithraksa has just closed after one month at Rooftop Gallery in Thonglor. Por began the exhibition with a blank canvas, and then proceeded to add buildings one by one to show the process of town settlements growing into large metropolises. Each new Like on the artist s Facebook page was translated into a new house drawn on the canvases, and each new share of the project saw the sharer s name imprinted in the work. New canvases were added to the expanding 2D city as each canvas reached saturation point. Plans are now being made to travel overseas with the project, which the artist describes as still being under construction . Photos by Paul Hutton.

location and the grand sweeping views of Pattaya Bay. Natural light was embraced with the installation of floor to ceiling glass windows, and the upper lobby features a spectacular, curved, fabric ceiling designed to look like sand at the beach. At night, strategicallyplaced strip lights enhance the ceiling s rippling sand dune-like effect. Hotel common areas have been designed to reflect the sparkling of the sea world and seating in both the indoor and outdoor areas of the hotel, as well as in the guest rooms, is curved to reflect the dazzling stones of the deep sea.

The striking, large, chaise-lounge chairs in the outside seating area of the Drift Lobby Lounge look exactly like giant pebbles and are strategically placed in a series of very shallow, rectangular water ponds. The undersea theme has also been extended to the design of the hotel s food and beverage outlets. The hotel s spectacular 635sqm Seaboard Ballroom features breathtaking, shimmering crystal chandeliers, designed to re-enact the gentle movement of beach breezes and the soft bubbling of the sea. The custom-made carpet on the floor of the Ballroom has been designed and patterned to look like soft sandm and the sea world theme even extends to the walls of the corridors leading to the meeting rooms which feature large fan-coral motifs. The vibrant theme of life underneath the sea is also reflected in the interior design of the hotel guest rooms.
Guest rooms feature a large circular ball which opens up into a vanity unit. In-room hotel work desks feature smooth, curved edges as do the sofas and seating in the rooms. Guest rooms are painted in soft, neutral tones and feature soft lighting and many of the walls are slightly curved to reflect gentle sea waves. Top class cuisine that suits diverse tastes is served up at the restaurants, which cater to relaxed and more upmarket customers in a range of settings. Open kitchens, scenic views, trendy beats, fine coffees, eyecatching cocktails and signature creations are all available, with guests able to tailor their own unique wining and dining experience depending on location of choice. The top floor Horizon alone provides a modern level of nightlife perfect for intimate couples in the air-conditioned restaurant, or for parties of cocktail loving dance enthusiasts on the open air deck. There are even three private dining rooms here.
