Cloud Nothings Live in Bangkok Cosmic Cafe Cloud Nothings was founded in a Cleveland basement, the one-man recording project of Dylan Baldi, an unassuming, then 18-year-old student of song with a breathtaking ear for melody. Prolific from the start, Baldi s early work was rough but immediate: crudely recorded, spring-loaded spasms of Buzzcocks-informed pop that quickly found an online following among the lo-fi-inclined. When an opportunity presented itself to open a small show in Brooklyn, Baldi abandoned a still-in-progress final project to be there. The gamble paid off he s been touring ever since, using every available break to write and record more. Page 12 www.bangkokscene.com

Group Art Exhibition Messages at Koi Art Gallery
Koi Art Gallery is to present Messsages, a group exhibition, from July 5th-31st. Opening during Galleries Night as part of La Fete s Festival, this exhibition will showcase the latest artworks by a group of Thai artists who explore their own interpretation of painting in the contemporary world. Exhibiting at Koi Art Gallery s expanded new gallery space in conjunction with La Fete s Galleries Night; Messages is a group exhibition of the latest artworks by emerging Thai artists Preecha Raksorn, Pannavit Pipat Jirachod, Prab Panitroangkrai and Pachara Piyasongsoot. This group of young talented artists all hail from the renowned Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Messages conveys the role of painting in contemporary society which is distinctly interpreted by each artist in their own style. The essence of the contemporary society today is how far civilization has evolved in terms of communication. The advancement of social technology not only enables people to connect in spite of physical barriers, but also paves a road for individuals to assert their subjective opinions on various topics such as current affairs, historical events, and the value of paintings. Due to this advancement, the average man can access and interpret ideas presented in artworks without relying on information supplied by institutes or large organisations. This open accessibility directly affects the environment that artists experience when creating their works. The message is consequently relied upon, influenced by, and negotiated subconsciously through external factors and opinions of others freely roaming the newsfeed of painters, as well as the subjective interpretations and background of the artists themselves. This internal and external influence of environmental factors helps create a revealing and time-consuming artwork from each artist. Using life as their inspiration, the paintings illustrate forms of satire, parody, comic nature, intuition and absurdity as perceived by the artists.

Golfers Gateway to the South
Page 40 www.bangkokscene.com
h: Novotel Chumphon Resort Golf enthusiasts travelling to the south of Thailand, or the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, have a perfect excuse to linger awhile en route at the Novotel Chumphon Beach Resort and Golf. The resort sits beside the Paradonpab Beach, beside the Gulf of Siam, and features its own nine hole golf course. There are 47 coral islands within easy reach for diving devotees. Chumphon itself makes a nice change from the more developed areas ahead, with the town largely untouched by mass tourism. It is a major destination for travellers to the islands, particularly Koh Tao, which is nearer to Chumphon than the more heavily used ferry ports around Surat Thani. Novotel Chumphon features 86 spacious rooms, including eight suites, spread around lush gardens with the golf course surrounding three sides. Two full sized swimming pools and a Jacuzzi are perfect for relaxing with a cool cocktail after a round or two of golf, and there is a spa retreat to ease away the aches and pains. Out of town conferences for small or large groups are popular here; excellent facilities include five function rooms that can be transformed into a large theatre holding up to 400 delegates. Chumphon s only all day international restaurant can also be found here: The Square has an open kitchen, a pizza and pasta corner, a sushi corner, a cold section serving salads and a bakery producing croissants and several types of bread. Open early for an expansive breakfast buffet, The Square remains open until midnight serving a la carte western and Thai dishes. The Carista Golf Club Restaurant specialises in Northeastern Thai food and has a live band most evenings. Words and Photos by Paul Hutton.

General Manager Gilles Tourenne Gilles, below, hails from Clermont Ferrand in France. He spent three years in Bangkok and three years in Phuket before coming to Chumphon. His early career began in Paris and the UK, working in Cardiff and as General Manager of Hotel Ibis London Barking. He moved to Asia to become General Manager of Embassy Place Phnom Penh in Cambodia, before moving to Thailand. Gilles said This resort has a lovely location right on the beach, with great viewpoints giving almost 360 degree views to the downtown area and across the bay. A fabulous Marine Park is just 20 minutes away by boat, and three islands nearby have snorkelling that to my mind is even better than that offered on nearby Koh Tao. We get many group parties coming to stay with us, for team building, dinner parties, karaoke nights and to make use of the Marine Park.

Fake-Work: An Exhibition by Prawit Lumjalurn
Continuous and consistent advancement of technology and knowledge have made this the Material Age in which people indulge more and more in materials and new things. This affects their way of life in a negative way. People lose prudence and ethicality, so they cannot properly handle their greed, anger and lust. It can be said that the world is facing a worrisome permanent crisis. Even though materials have roles in people s lives, deep in their hearts, they need peace and tranquility. If they use their wisdom and intellect, they will know ways to solve this crisis. True happiness comes with a peaceful mind. This makes one a perfect human being. Fake-Work is an art exhibition that depicts the current situation of society in which people are under the influences of illusions which guide their lives. This work is a visual art work (paintings) that reflects the ideas and concepts stated above. Fake-Work is the first solo exhibition of Prawit Lumjalurn. He was born in Surat Thani Province, and has received numerous awards for his artworks. June 19th - July 12th, 2014 Number 1 Gallery
