Making The Right Connection Kelly Elsasser loves people, but loves helping them out even more... Let’s be honest, networking isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some people are shy and don’t like putting themselves out there. Others find the inevitable small talk awkward or intimating. Luckily for Valley businesses though, Kelly Elsasser loves everything about networking.

After owning her own children’s consignment store, Elsasser went to work marketing for a real estate company. Immediately, she dove head first into the networking world open to small businesses and . . . wasn’t that impressed with what she found. “I realized during this time that all networking groups were the same. Standardized meetings every other week with a 30 second commercial and TONS of business card exchanges. I realized that the white collar, Wall Street type industries dominated these meetings: real estate agents, insurance agents, financial planners, mortgage lenders, etc. I started to question how smaller, less white collar businesses benefit from these networking groups? I knew the answer . . . they didn’t benefit at all.” It was from this frustration that Valley Connection was born. Says Elsasser, “I wanted to create the first networking group that was personal, more custom to each member, warmer, more about forming relationships and getting your name out there in non-traditional ways.” This more personal route means that an interview is required of each member before acceptance to ensure the members are motivated business men and women and to allow Elsasser to get to know each person on an individual level. She explains, “I am on a mission to get to know every one of my members to the point that I can automatically match them up with other members they can do business with, refer people to or simply learn from.”

Phoenix Ultimate Woman August / September 2013

So what makes Elsasser so good at something that a lot of people can’t stand? “I am a people person—always have been and always will be,” says Elsasser. “I truly enjoy people’s stories and really listen as they tell me about their journeys.” To put it simply, Elsasser loves people almost as much a people seem to love her. A love completely justified by her mission and work ethic, “The entire vision behind Valley Connection comes from the heart,” she explains. “I truly want to help Valley businesses grow and give them opportunities to promote themselves.” The Nitty Gritty Where do you see Valley Connection going in the future? My goal at this point is to grow members. I am happy staying local. I want to master the template that I am working on for Valley Connection and maybe someday in the future it can more to other cities. What was the most successful and fun event that you’ve had? I really enjoyed RescuePalooza! We had 60 local business vendors set up for the grand opening of Lost Home Pet Foundation’s grand opening. This was a pet-friendly, kidfriendly, fund-raising, local-business-promoting fun event! Do you ever consider yourself a matchmaker for businesses? Funny you say that! I have been called that many times. Many business people need help connecting. Simply attending an event is not “connecting”. I will hold their hands and actually help them connect.

Revolutionizing Sagging Pants The Sag -EZ BBBritches Project The Better Baggy Britches Sagging pants have been around for decades. Many suggest the style started years ago in prison where inmates were not allowed to wear belts. Today sagging is a fashion that gained popularity in the Hip Hop, Rap, and Rock cultures. Sagging Pants Banned The sagging pants ‘style’ has caused a stir in communities across the country. The negative perception of sagging pants even rises to the political level. Some legislators have found the style so distasteful that they have taken legal action. For example: Albany, Ga – Albany gets nearly $4,000 from sagging pants ban. (Global Post Staff Writer Associated Press September 28, 2011) In Florida, just recently, bill passes prohibiting sagging pants in Florida schools. (The Write-Up, Urban News Source, April 2011) New York State Senator Eric Adams launched the ‘Stop-the-Sag’ campaign to dissuade young men from wearing degrading sagging pants. Adams wants his billboard and online video to inspire self-respect and encourage kids to clean up their look. (Essence, July 2011)

You see saggy pants everyday worn by the young as well as the old. Hip Hop and Rap Artist, Rock Groups and even women are rockin’ saggy pants. BUT, the low-slung style does have its obvious drawbacks, said many who wear them. The constant effort to keep them up makes it hard to move fast. “Sometimes they do fall down.” Sag-EZ BBBritches is the movement to globally revolutionize the controversial sagging pants style; to bring a new concept of the saggy pants style to the clothing industry designed to be aesthetically pleasing in style and comfort that will not only address the controversial sagging pants style but will be a new style of pants that can be worn appropriately for work, school, or play. BBBritches are more than another pair of pants with a logo. BBBritches are a new style of pants; a different look, a new fit with style and comfort. Whatever your purpose, BBBritches are designed to please the blue collar worker, students, and the sportsman. BBBritches can be dressed up, or dressed down, fit comfortably around the waist and therefore, be appropriate attire for any occasion. Phoenix Ultimate Woman August / September 2013

Triumph Over Tragedy The Tonya Allen Foundation (TAF) is a Phoenix-based, federally approved 501(c) (3) non-profit organization with a core belief that child sexual abuse is predictable, preventable, and we all play a part in the solution. Its mission is to reduce children's vulnerability to child sexual abuse and to support survivors through the healing process. They accomplish this mission through "Best-in-World" awareness, education, support, and collaborative solutions. Child sexual abuse is a silent epidemic throughout the United States and the world, creating social havoc-for children, adult survivors, and society. 1 in 4 Girls, 6 Boys are sexually assaulted by the age of 18. Over 90% by someone they already know and trust - family members, friends, babysitters, coaches, etc. It can be prevented and it can be treated, but a conscious and sustained effort to ensure the safety of the children is both missing and essential. If individuals, stakeholders, communities, organizations, and policymakers are going to deal with the issue, they must understand the extent to which it is a problem and they must be able to talk about it. To move toward that end, they must first be made aware of what it is, what it does, and what can be done about it.

http://www.tonyaallenfoundation.org

Phoenix Ultimate Woman August / September 2013

The TAF and its members are creating a movement to mobilize public support for shaping new policies that will bring about sweeping change for children. Current projects includes: A Art Therapy Supply Drive in which they presented to Child Help to help give children a voice, a proposal to the Governor to declare November 9, 2013 an official Triumph Over Tragedy Day. They also had the wonderful opportunity to work closely with the Triumph Over Tragedy USA Pageant. This pageant encourages the contestants to gain self-awareness, self -confidence, individual pride and a greater social and community awareness for Child Sexual Abuse.

The TOT USA Pageant has chosen the Tonya Allen Foundation as its charity of choice. Other projects include an innovative program that provides education to hospitals and the community on the importance of family strengthening and prevention of child maltreatment.

As

Founder and CEO of TAF Tonya Allen serves as the organization’s key spokesperson and

has primary responsibility for the overall oversight of the organization’s business. Mrs. Allen is known for her compelling and emotionally gripping story depicting her life, which debut at the Herberger Theater and several theaters throughout Arizona. As a child, she experienced sexual abuse at the hands of a family member. For four years, she endured abuse, but the effects would last for decades to come. She discovered that writing gave her a voice and a means by which she could fight back against her demons. Her journey on the road to selfactualization led to a much larger calling. As a survivor and now a THRIVER, Mrs. Allen is taking a stand in the community to stop the silence. It is only through the generosity of others, that she has been able to "Triumph Over Tragedy". She however, will never forget the counselors, family, friends and strangers who reached out to help her. It is her desire to be that lifeline for others now. She states, "It is a privilege to be of service to others. All of us together can make a difference. From every wound there is a scar, and every scar tells a story, a story that says, I WILL TRIUMPH".

Innovation with Style: The Phoenix Fashion 411 By Eva Louis, Film & Fashion Futures Writer How does one find the center of the universe? Well in my ideal world, it is where all the artists live and creation is born. Many claim to be artists and strive for that life which is not an easy one. In the truest sense of the word, an artist can be defined as “a person who practices any of the various creative arts. On June 27, 2013, there was a moment along the space continuum timeline that virtually shook the world at its roots and a spotlight was shone on the beginning of another center that definitely made an impact. RAW Artists Kaleidoscope exhibited for the first time at Monarch Theatre in Phoenix, AZ. This is what I call an explosion at the center of the universe with the energy and aurora of artists from all over. If you have never been to a RAW Artists showcase, you must not miss anymore. RAW: natural born artists is an independent arts organization, for artists, by artists. They are an international community made up of creative individuals across the globe with an outstanding mission to provide independent artists within the first 10 years of their career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity. They welcome all genres of art including independent film, fashion, music, visual art, performing art, hairstylists, makeup artists and more. They have encouraged the creative success of the many visionaries and storytellers of our generation.

Phoenix Ultimate Woman August / September 2013

RAW exists and currently operates in nearly 60 cities across the United States, Australia, Canada and, most recently London has been added to the mix! The vision of this organization hits at my core and heart. There is a tremendous respect and desire to help artists in a way that most other organizations just don’t have the resources or logistics to be able to do this. Laura Fischer is the leader of the RAW Artists in Arizona and oversees both Phoenix and Tucson events which rotate months for their showcases. Since Laura has been involved the vision of the showcase and the involvement from artists has only grown. Her passion and belief in this program and offering to the community is evident in every inch of the event she pours her undivided attention, time, and energy into. June 2013 was a special month for Phoenix as the Monarch Theatre became the home of the Kaleidoscope showcase. The event exceeded expectations not only in the venue and the set-up of the location, but the artists that partook in this showcase were next level.

The dynamics and the energy level of the event were felt as you came upon Theatre entrance that evening. I always love seeing a waiting line going into an event and observing the crowd to obtain a sense of the hype and promotions that drew people to attend. As the event was moved to a new location, it brought out curious individuals in most cases that had never attended the showcase before and were there to learn and experience something new and different. In addition, the usual suspects and following of groupies, myself included, attended as well as friend and family support for the artists being showcased. On this night, the Theatre welcomed all when the doors finally opened. The space with the tall ceilings and open floor set up with the intriguing second floor arrangement provided for ample opportunities to have mingling time with the attendees, artists, and see the displays and presentations that outnumbered those from prior events. I was privileged to speak with many of the artists being represented at the event. Normally I tend to focus on a couple of aspects of each showcase as it is nearly impossible to take it all in and really learn about everyone, however, this event was special in that the talent was amazing and unique and I couldn’t resist actually engaging and speaking with several. There were definite highlight artists and those participating in their artist reveal for the first time – check out the artists’ details and photos captured and find your favorites.

To learn more about RAW Artists and their showcases, visit the main website - http://www.rawartists.org/ and for Showcases - http:// www.rawartists.org/en/showcases. The next Phoenix, AZ showcase is on August 24th at 8:00 pm at the Monarch Theatre. Get your tickets now and be ready for the explosion at “EN MASSE” with over 40 artists being presented in genres of Art, Fashion, Film, Music, Photography, Hair, Makeup, Performance, and Accessories. You will not be disappointed.

Do Women and Men Invest Differently? Several years ago, a book titled Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus was quite popular. As the title suggests, the book argues that men and women are vastly different from each other, particularly in their emotional needs and in the way they communicate. While not everyone agrees with the notion that men and women might as well be from different planets, most of us would probably concur that the two genders frequently behave differently — and this divergence in behavior may also show up in the way that we invest. In fact, various studies and anecdotal evidence suggests these differences in the way that men and women invest: Men tend to trade more often than women. Men seem to buy and sell investments more frequently than women. This difference could result in an advantage for women investors. For one thing, if women do trade less, they may incur fewer commission charges, fees and other expenses, all of which can eat into investment returns. Also, by holding investments longer, women may be able to take better advantage of market rallies. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, for example, men were more likely than women to sell shares of stock at market lows, which led to bigger losses among male traders — and fewer gains when some of the stock values began to rise again — Phoenix Ultimate Woman August / September 2013

Shanna Tingom Financial Advisor

according to a study by Vanguard, a mutual fund company. Men tend to invest more aggressively than women. Perhaps not surprisingly, men seem to be more willing to take risks with their investments. This trait can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, risk is associated with reward, so the more aggressive the investment, the greater the potential for growth. On the negative side, taking too much risk pretty much speaks for itself. Ideally, all investors — men and women — should stick with investments that fit their individual risk tolerance.

Women are more likely to look at the “big picture.” Although both men and women investors want information, women seem to take a more “holistic” approach — that is, instead of focusing strictly on performance statistics, they tend to delve deeper into their investments’ background, competitive environment and other factors. This quest for additional knowledge may help explain why all-female investment clubs have achieved greater returns than all -male clubs, according to a study by the National Association of Investors Corp., which represents thousands of investment clubs across the country. Men may be more optimistic about the financial markets. Some studies show that men are more optimistic about key economic indicators and future stock market performance. Optimism can be a valuable asset when it comes to investing; if you have confidence in the future, you’re more likely to invest for it, and to continue investing. On the other hand, false optimism may lead to over-confidence, which can have negative results for investors.

Neither men nor women have a monopoly on positive investment behaviors; each gender can probably learn something from the other. Ultimately, of course, it’s your decision-making, not your x-or y chromosomes, that will determine your ability to make progress toward your long-term goals — so educate yourself about your choices, and get the help you need from a financial professional, as you invest through the years.

The Goodbye

The Hardest Part of Entrepreneurship:

It’s time for the “Goodbye.” It’s time to let the hands go. It’s time to lay aside the weight(s) that restricts movement, creativity, and advancement. It’s time to abhor rituals, habits and traditions that abort accomplishment. As Nate Sachs with Blueprint For Tomorrow would say, “Now it’s time to “work ON your business and not IN your business.” It is time to tap into the new and changing landscape of philanthropy that has positioned itself to seek, support and embrace the 21st Century social entrepreneur. It’s now time to plan with purposed precision. It is time to seek the unconventional in order to gain the stuff that dreams are made of. It is time to seek out the next revolution and we have to be in “front” of it if we are to expand our reach, our influence, our profits, and our giving. Building the courage to walk into your truth (purpose) takes much more time to build, when you don’t embrace the separation necessary for great transformation. I guess you could say no one really prepared us for the day when we would walk alone – they just assured us that by faith, we would get there. James Harvey Robinson concluded, “Greatness, in the last analysis, is largely bravery-courage in escaping from old ideas and old standards.” In moving forward, you have to be alright with the “goodbye”. http://alwaysthecounselor.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-hardest-part-of-
