Hanabi-Fireworks! Hajime/Beginning Judo
Ages 3–6
ages 5–17
Chibi (little) Judo helps children grow in wonderful ways. As we jump, run and roll, we develop balance, coordination and confidence. And we have fun! We start out learning our names in Japanese then do movement exercises, tumbling and some simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We place a strong emphasis on culture so everyone plays games, sing songs and speaks the language of Japan. We learn to “nete” (lie down) and to “tonde “ (leap) like a “raion” (lion). In our positive learning environment we bow politely to Sensei (teacher) and to one another. At Hanabi, respect comes as naturally as smiling.
Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running warm us up before we practice falling techniques: Hajime students learn to fall safely, effortlessly and without discomfort. Judo allows a smaller person to control a bigger opponent. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws—where our opponent can be flipped upside down on Sensei. Class finishes with games that develop physi- cal coordination, balance and laughter. We sing in Japanese about inspiration and bow to each other respectfully. Respect and discipline are as much a part of Hanabi as smiling.

Help maintain our public fields in Piedmont. Make your donation go twice as far with a matching funds donation opportunity With all the challenges from the pandemic, we have been the beneficiary of our well-maintained, lovely outdoor spaces that have allowed us as a community to spend time together. Our precious public spaces are more important than ever. Make your donation go twice as far, and create a lasting legacy by donating to the Piedmont Beautification Foundation’s Sport Fields Endowment Fund. Your donation will be matched by John Bates, Jr. and Charles Bates, in loving memory of their sister Katy Bates Kreitler. The endowment will generate income to be used exclusively for the maintenance and preservation of the public fields and courts in Piedmont. Please make a donation to the PBF Sport Fields Endowment Fund at piedmontbeautificationfoundation.org. Gayle Lambert, PBF President
