Where the Sun Meets the Sea ~

Chambers Creek Regional Park

ADVENTURES IN THE WEST While Pierce County's ownership of Chambers Creek Regional Park is relatively recent, the making of the Park and its surrounding land uses began to take shape hundreds of years ago. The locaction was first settled by the Steilacoom Indian Tribe (pre 1830's), then became a US Army outpost in 1846 and later a strategic military post guarding the entrance to Puget Sound in the 1890's. By 1992, Lone Star Northwest merged two gravel mines operating on the site, becoming the largest producer of sand and gravel in the nation.

Aerial photos of the Chambers Creek area circa 1963 (right) and 2018 (left)

Pierce County Parks invites you to explore the offerings at Chambers Creek Regional Park We’re very excited to announce that the construction of a new 7-acre Event Lawn at Chambers Creek Regional Park has been completed! This space will bring new programming and events to you, and expand on our existing outdoor events like our Kite Festival and Spring Egg Hunt. The Event Lawn will be used for athletic events, be a rentable space for the public, and serve as additional parking for all our outdoor events. Next to the new Event Lawn is the Central Meadow which plays host to several outdoor events that include our Family Campout on August 17th and Kidz Kraze Children's Festival on August 25th. This 11-acre lawn is a rentable space perfect for small family gatherings or larger company parties and retreats. For those that enjoy a scenic stroll or jog, the two loops around the Central Meadow provide a wonderful view of Chambers Bay golf course, Puget Sound, and the surrounding islands.

Pierce County first began operations on the site in the 1950's with the development of a small County road shop where the Environmental Services Building and playfields exist today. In the 1980's, portions of the Chambers Creek Canyon were acquired to protect this unique, wooded canyon and creek area. In 2011, recreational opportunities were expanded on the site due to growth in popularity.

Relics of the gravel mines remain at the park today.

Chambers Bay Golf Course will swing into fall by hosting the Men’s and Women’s 2020 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Sectional Qualifier on Wednesday, September 4th. The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship consists of 128 two-player teams. 60 Men’s sides and 16 Women’s sides will compete to qualify for only a few spots to move on in their respective Championship. Those that advance will compete at Quail Creek (Women) and Philadelphia Cricket Club (Men) in April and May of 2020 respectively. Did you know? Pierce County is home to more than than 206,000 dogs. They produce more than 68,000 pounds, or 34 tons, of dog waste every day. Dog waste is raw sewage - pick up pet waste, bag it, and put it in the trash. Landfills are designed to handle pet waste safely. Yards, trails, streets, parks, toilets, and compost piles are not for dog waste. Remember to take a bag with you on walks, or use the dog waste stations in common areas. At home, daily pick up is best.

FREE Dog Waste Stations Available

If your neighborhood has a dog waste problem in a common area like a community park, green belt or open space, you could qualify for a free dog waste station. While supplies last, Pierce County will provide a free dog waste station for your neighborhood. Learn more and apply to be a sponsor. Thank you for keeping our neighborhoods and waterways clean! Fantasy Lights WALK - 2 DAYS!

Did you know? The Benefits of Being Outside: • • • • • •

Nature provides flood protection, heat protection, clean air and several environmental benefits. Mental, physical and community health is increased as a community becomes socially connected and physically active. Most people who achieve the national fitness standards do so by using a park setting or program. For every dollar invested in outdoor health activities at natural sites, visitors enjoy five to twenty times the savings in benefits from reduced health care costs, skill development and reductions in antisocial behavior. Lifelong learning can happen outside of a classroom, frequently with more measurable long-term results. Tourism, property values and economic spending are influenced by the quality of a community’s park system. Volunteerism concurrently provides economic, social and recreational benefits for the volunteer, the users of our park system and the agency.
