THE LOWEDOWN
THERE are going to be a lot of ups and downs between now and the end of the season, and Tuesday night’s game against Crawley was a good example of that. I felt that we started the game very well in the opening 15 minutes, we made a few mistakes, including the goal, and found ourselves 1-0 down. The lads showed terrific character to get back into the game, and I felt, after half-time, there was only one team that was going to win it, especially after our second goal – but it was not to be. Like the Green Army, I was disappointed that we did not see the win out – but we have to be patient and show some perspective. From the last five games, we have collected four wins and a draw – we were a few minutes away from five in a row. How can I be too critical of the lads? They are giving everything, putting their bodies on the line and working hard for the cause. We have to be patient, what we are trying to build does not simply happen overnight. However, I think the style of play, and our philosophy, is clear for all to see and our recent results are showing that. There were a few things my coaching staff and I identified during the game, and we have been working on those areas. We have got to make
sure that we keep doing the right things and playing the style of football that has gotten us to where we are today. Newport are a good side, with a good young manager in Michael Flynn. We know their strengths and weaknesses, and we will respect them because they are a very competitive outfit. However, our focus will be on ourselves, and ensuring that we stick to the plan. Get behind us. Green Army!

AMERICAN EYE
Nearly 400 years ago, the original Pilgrims embarked on an overseas tour that saw a massive result for the world. In celebration of the city of Plymouth’s historical ties with the United States of America, we look at some football connections between the club and the country.
BY MEGAN STONE In a slightly different approach to this week’s American Eye, we look at former Argyle forward Keith Furphy – son of exSheffield United and Blackburn Rovers manager Ken Furphy – who made only six appearances for the Pilgrims, but the rest of his career was definitely an interesting one. Born in Stockton-on-Tees, Keith moved to the United States at the age of 20 and signed for North American Soccer League side Detroit Express who were, at the time, coached by his father. Following the club’s fans’ dissatisfaction of Furphy playing under his father, the Express sent Keith to the Atlanta Chiefs in exchange for cash and the Chiefs’ firstround pick in the 1981 NASL draft. Keith spent two seasons with the Chiefs, making 57 appearances and scoring 17 goals during his time there. He then made a move to Cleveland Force between 19811985, with a year at Express, again, on loan in 1983. At Cleveland Force, Keith made 188 appearances and bagged a staggering 185 goals. Between 1985-1988, Keith signed for numerous teams – Kansas City Comets, Tacoma Stars and Baltimore Blast – and between those three American teams he scored 85 goals across 142 appearances.
After Keith had left Baltimore Blast, he flew back to England and joined Argyle, for who he made six appearances at the beginning of the 1987-88 season, scoring just one goal – the final one in a 6-1 Home Park thrashing of Huddersfield Town. The following year, he signed for Bath City where he only made one appearance for the whole time he was there. He later went back to America and joined Detroit Rockets. However, there was something slightly different about the three teams he joined before joining the Pilgrims and the Romans, and the one he signed for after. They all competed in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The MISL was, as the name hints, an indoor soccer league which was played in the US and that existed from autumn 1978 until spring 1992. In its final two seasons, the name was shortened to Major Soccer League. Businessmen Ed Tepper and Earl Foreman founded the MISL in 1977 and, over its existence, a total of franchises under 31 team names played in the league. Those teams were based over 27 different cities and towns with two different teams playing at different times in Cleveland, East Rutherford, New Jersey, St Louis and Uniondale. One of its top coaches was Baltimore’s Kenny Cooper, whose son, also called Kenny, enjoyed a loan spell at Home Park in 2010 from German side 1860 Munich. The league changed its name to the Major Soccer League in 1990, and then it folded in 1992 but four of the seven franchises would continue to operate. Cleveland Crunch and Wichita Wings joined the National Professional Soccer League and Dallas Sidekicks and San Diego Sockers helped found the Continental Indoor Soccer League.

Review COLCHESTER United striker Theo Robinson scored two late goals to sink leaders Swindon Town 3-1 at the JobServe Community Stadium in midweek. Swindon went ahead early in the second half through Diallang Jaiyesimi, but Luke Norris headed Colchester level and Robinson struck twice in the final six minutes.

bookable offence on the stroke of half-time. Alfie May fired a late equaliser for the visitors. Former Pilgrim Nathan Thomas bagged a hattrick as Carlisle United secured an eye-catching 4-1 victory away at Forest Green Rovers. Thomas struck twice in as many first-half minutes for the Cumbrians and completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot early in the second period before Joshua Kayode added a fourth. Carl Winchester scored the home side’s consolation from the penalty spot.
Richie Wellens’ side stay top as Exeter City let slip a half-time lead to lose by the same scoreline at Port Vale. Nicky Ajose headed Exeter in front, but Port Vale hit back after the break through Richie Bennett’s penalty, Leon Legge and Bennett’s header.
Another former Green, Billy Clarke, struck again for Ian Holloway’s Grimsby Town, securing a 3-1 win over bottom side Stevenage. Clarke’s 63rdminute penalty was sandwiched between a Ben Nugent own-goal and Charles Vernam’s strike, before Charlie Lakin pulled a consolation back in stoppage-time.
Crewe Alexandra capitalised on Argyle’s 2-2 draw against Crawley Town, leapfrogging the Pilgrims into the final automatic promotion place after beating Leyton Orient 2-0 at Gresty Road. The Railwaymen struck late in either half through Charlie Kirk and Daniel Powell.
Oldham Athletic produced a fine display to overcome Mansfield Town 3-1 at Boundary Park. Jonny Smith and Tom Hamer gave the Latics a half-time lead, before Gevaro Nepomuceno added a third on the hour. Otis Khan scored a last-minute consolation for the Stags.
Vadaine Oliver’s double helped Northampton Town to a 3-0 home win against Scunthorpe United at the PTS Academy Stadium. Oliver’s early header gave Northampton a flying start before former Cobblers striker striker Kevin van Veen was shown a straight red card for his foul on Charlie Goode. A second from Oliver put Northampton in control and Sam Hoskins’ penalty sealed all three points.
Joss Labadie’s first-half header secured today’s visitors Newport a 1-0 home win against Macclesfield Town, and Salford cruised to a 4-0 win at Cambridge United – a result which cost U’s boss Colin Calderwood his job. Adam Rooney gave Salford an interval lead and then converted a penalty, with Ashley Hunter and Ibou Touray adding further goals.
Bradford City’s winless league run was extended to six matches after they had Jamie Devitt sent off in a 1-1 home draw against Cheltenham Town. Clayton Donaldson’s first goal since September put Bradford in front, before Devitt’s second
Derek Adams’ Morecambe have given themselves some breathing room at the foot of the table, winning 2-0 at Walsall thanks to second-half goals from Steven Old and Carlos Mendes Gomes. In the first-half, Saddlers midfielder Wesley McDonald missed a penalty.

ANDREW PARKINSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE GOOD afternoon to everyone ahead of this afternoon’s fixture against Newport County. We would like to welcome all of you to Home Park, including the officials and visiting fans who have travelled from South Wales. It is little more than a month since we opened the Mayflower Grandstand and, whilst there are still a few teething issues, it is good to see how the stand is evolving and improving, from an operational perspective, game by game. The outside Fan Zone is improving, both in terms of the entertainment and the food and drink offering to fans young and old, and supporters are gradually getting used to where everything is in the new revamped space.
So, this year, emphasis will not only be placed on the year ahead, but future years, too. This will require us to look at, not only the footballing infrastructure required to meet our ambitions, but everything else that makes up running a football club and business. This can be anything from fixed costs such as rates, to the hugely variable ones, such as utilities. Added to this are any capital expenditure items and repairs and maintenance that we will encounter for the upkeep of a sizeable stadium that is open for most days of the year. It is a careful balancing act between ensuring that the right investment is made and that efficiencies in operations and infrastructure are delivered without hampering the focus and investment that is required in ensuring that we have the best possible chance of performing on the pitch.
The area requiring most attention is the upper concourse at half-time. Whilst the space does meet standards of safety, it is clear that we need to speed up circulation within the 15-minute window. The introduction of cashless payments for the kiosks in this area was due, in part, to wanting to speed up this circulation and we will be looking at various other measures over the coming games.
Allied to this, we need to be looking at every opportunity to ensure that the benefits of the Mayflower Grandstand are realised, both on match day and non-match day.
Obviously, the Mayflower Grandstand has been a major focus over the last 18 months off the field, both in terms of investment and how it would work operationally, However, now is the time of year that the club places attention to how it budgets for the year ahead – our financial year runs from July 1 until the end of June.
We can never take this support for granted and, indeed, need to look at how we meet the expectations of a whole range of people who sometimes have very different requirements.
We are endeavouring, over the next few years, to become a sustainable football club, one that drives enough revenue to meet our outgoings.
With best wishes, Andrew.
Ultimately, though, the key will be in ensuring that our supporters and guests on match-day and non match-day have something that they feel is value for what they pay.
Understanding this is key to our aspiration to become a sustainable Argyle.
COYG!
“WE ARE ENDEAVOURING, OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS, TO BECOME A SUSTAINABLE FOOTBALL CLUB, ONE THAT DRIVES ENOUGH REVENUE TO MEET OUR OUTGOINGS"

£4,000 DONATED TO PL KICKS
Argyle Community Trust is delighted to welcome a generous donation from five Plymouth City Councillors, supporting the PL Kicks programme. Although not all representing the same political parties, Cllr Dave Downie, Cllr Neil Hendy, Cllr Pauline Murphy, Cllr Jon Taylor and Cllr Brian Vincent have come together to back the community programme.

Run by Argyle Community Trust in Devon and Cornwall, Premier League Kicks answers to the needs of children and young people locally, providing activities and support, including targeted workshops and mentoring, with the aim of contributing to a reduction in youth violence and creating safer, stronger and more inclusive communities. Both Cllr Dave Downie and Cllr Jon Taylor, of Budshead Ward, have chosen to donate £500 each towards the campaign that plays a vital role in supporting the local community in Plymouth through coaching, education and training sessions for young people aged 8-18 years old. As a former teacher, youth and community worker, Cllr Downie displays a real interest in improving the lives of young people and said: “Argyle is strongly embedded in the local community here in Plymouth and it is great to recognise the Trust’s hard work to improve the lives of those within the area. “I hope the donation can contribute towards continuing the success of PL Kicks and help increase its reach throughout Plymouth.”

The programme aims to enhance physical and mental wellbeing, including self-esteem, ambition and social skills, as well as strengthen communities with a culture of volunteering, social action and positive role models. Sessions run in six areas of Plymouth, including the Efford and Lipson Ward, represented by Cllr Pauline Murphy, Cllr Brian Vincent and Cllr Neil Hendy, and have seen the benefit of the programme and wanted to add their support by coming together and donating £3,000. Cllr Murphy said: “Sport holds the power to influence many people’s lives in positive ways and I’m proud that we’ve come together and support a programme that makes such an impact not just in our ward but across the whole city.” Premier League Kicks Project Officer Ben Hugill said: “The support we’ve received from the local councillors is really encouraging and will make a difference. “It’s important that young people have a safe space to socialise and play and having these sessions right in the heart of a neighbourhood makes it easier for them to access and enjoy without the worry of how to get to a venue that may be far from their home. “We love to welcome new people of all abilities to our PL Kicks sessions and encourage young people to find their nearest group and come along.” The scheme operates in many locations Devon and Cornwall where PL Kicks continues to impact upon many young people by offering regular coaching sessions and the opportunity to progress into education, training and employment.

SPECIAL
THE Big Green Lottery exists to raise funds and awareness of the fantastic work being done in the Argyle Academy, as we work to produce talented footballers for the next generation of Home Park heroes. Club photographer Dave Rowntree paid a trip to Tavistock last Sunday, when we had three different age-groups in action against Forest Green Rovers. The weather let us down somewhat but there was still tremendous football on display and plenty of muddy knees. Members of the Big Green Lottery have helped to raise funds for a new Academy minibus; state-of-the-art sports science equipment; and trips to play top Academy teams across the country. A huge thanks to our members and we would be great to welcome more to the BGL.

For more information on the Big Green Lottery, drop us a message on bgl@pafc.co.uk, win some money and help raise funds for the Argyle Academy.
As well as the weekly rollover rising by £100 every seven days, members of the Big Green Lottery are entered into a monthly draw for £500; the grand annual draw for £12,000; and monthly bonus prizes...plus a discount in the Argyle Superstore and big-match ticket priority.

ON THE OTHER HAND
YOUR generation can be defined by the children's TV you watched. It remains a popular pub conversation with all ages: what was your favourite kids TV show?
Do you get all nostalgic at the mention of The Clangers and Bill and Ben? When Bagpuss yawns, do all the little mice in the mouse organ yawn as well? Are you halfway down the slide before Jamie has a chance to grab his magic torch? What does the Island of Sodor, Button Moon or Tubby Custard mean to you? The last stop on the CBeebies train for me was actually a boat: sailing off to the land of the Ninky Nonk. By that time, my youngest was no longer watching CBeebies and skipped CBBC, going straight to YouTube instead. Familiar story? With YouTube replacing TV in most departments, and streaming services fragmenting our viewing habits even more, the conversations I used to have on the playground ('Did you watch Grange Hill last night?') have gone, as have the family viewing habits of all sitting down watching whatever was on one of the four channels at the time. This is not all bad because TV was, for the most part, pretty rubbish in those days. It was also often quite awkward as a teenage boy with some of the more risqué dramas that the BBC came up with on a Sunday evening. Now in the rare evenings we all sit down together with a tray on our laps for an old-fashioned TV dinner, one nominated person scrolls through Netflix suggesting films to which everyone else calls out ‘no’. We then settle on a kids’ film as the lowest common denominator, watch 10 minutes of it, and then all the kids, having finished their tea, disappear off, leaving mum and dad watching Kung Fu Panda together. The diversity of entertainment, with the increased choice serving our increasingly niche
tastes, is both good and bad, and reflects a trend in politics and society as a whole, which is that, in moving towards only listening to the voices we agree with (or subscribe to), we are risking becoming more narrow minded. In the United States, people pick a news channel according to their political leaning, and this serves only to reinforce their world view and separate them from other points of view. It makes it more and more binary, oppositional, us and them. It reduces reasoned debate with people with whom you disagree. Middle ground is eroded. Social media has the same effect over here, and our young people - of whom you may be one - get their news from Facebook and Twitter more than from BBC and ITV. Places of difference become even more important. Places like the church, the football club, the neighbourhood and, most of all, the extended family, become ever so important. You can grow to love someone and engage with them based around a shared interest or membership, and then find out that they have a completely different worldview about politics, gender identity, religion or ethics. Recently, I got to know a lovely family through church. They were Americans brought up in the Deep South, supporters of Donald Trump and supporters of the right to bear arms. Until that moment, I could not imagine – growing up as I did in the Home Counties – that there was a rational argument for families owning guns, beyond hunting and sport. But they had one.
I was left confused in a good way. My opinion had not changed, but there was a small window of doubt that was left open. Small windows of doubt are a healthy thing. Certainty is dangerous. ‘The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.’ – Bertrand Russell

THE ARGYLE NETWORK HAPPY BIRTHDAY... ...JOHN
Happy birthday, for Tuesday to John King. Love and best wishes from Anna, Nathan and Mum.
...ALFIE 50/50 LOTTERY
Good afternoon and welcome to your 50/50 Lottery brief. We took a Senior Greens and friends coach to Stevenage last Saturday and the team managed to get the result after a hard fought battle. On the journey home, after a break at the services, we were just about to leave when the team bus pulled in next to us. We were delighted to get coaches Kevin and Rhys, together with players Gary, Conor and Joe to say 'hello' to us all. Actually, as we were about to leave, we realised that Nance was still chatting away at the back of the coach. Brilliant, lads pop on board any time. At the Stevenage home game, Clive Reed and his son Oliver, who always buy their tickets off seller Fred, won the second prize which was a large seasonal veg box kindly donated by Riverford Organic Farmers, which also included delivery. The whole Reed family and Clive and Oliver are both Pioneers - Oliver loves the opportunity this now gives him to meet the players and the gaffer Ryan Lowe. His favourite players are Michael Cooper, Tyreeq Bakinson and Danny Mayor - not a bad choice there, lad. Today's prizes are: First - cash; Second - a Tony Waiters Era Pictorial Scrapbook Third - an Annual Family Membership to Hill Lane Tennis Club Plymouth Fourth - a pair of the famous umbrellas kindly donated by Pasoti
Happy 10th birthday, Alfie Cooper. Alfie has brought two friends with him today, one of who, Mitch Simons, celebrated his birthday yesterday. So happy birthday to Mitch, too.
...OSCAR
Happy sixth birthday for Wednesday to Oscar Lai, who has been an avid supporter since he was three and has his own season-ticket! He hopes to play for the mighty Greens when he is older! Love from mum, Carland.

HOME THOUGHTS Christian Kent Head of Conferencing and Events
WELCOME to the latest news from the Home Park Stadium team. It has been another busy week for the team as bookings continue apace. The week started with the Crowne Plaza Christmas party, which saw more than 120 covers and music from the Swing Kings; our regular Friday Business Network International group has attended; and ASD Lighting had their quarterly meeting in the boardroom. The team also ran an in-house Murder Mystery Evening last night which entertained more than 80 attendees with lots of good fun! It is fair to say that the team has received some fantastic feedback from delegates and bookers about the impressive new facilities. Next week, the venue plays host to Vickery Holman for a breakfast event, and Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce for their monthly Crunchy Breakfast. There are also some additional private-hire bookings that have filled an already busy weekly calendar. February looks like being a big month for non-match day events, notably the Devon & Cornwall Police’s Wellbeing Conference, NHS meetings, and the regular weekly bookers such
as Plymouth Investment Group, BNI and the Federation of Small Businesses. In addition to the events, the team will also be catering for three home league games, most of which are now sold out for Hospitality, and three non-first team games, which will see Club Argyle open to ticket-holders. Momentum continues to gather for the two large concerts with Little Mix and Westlife; the team has been holding meetings with the Safety Advisory Group and the promoter to work on the logistics. The first of the smaller concerts has also been launched, an ABBA West End performance. The stage position for that event will be in front of the Mayflower Grandstand in order to open up hospitality options for guests. Tickets and details can be found on the Home Park Stadium website, www.homeparkstadium.com. The team is also looking forward to the Argyle Community Day on February 20, and an open training session with the first-team that will give fans who have not yet visited the new Mayflower Grandstand the opportunity to experience and explore it. NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION FIXTURES
Argyle Ladies
ARGYLE Ladies manager Dave Leonard has made an impassioned plea for fans to turn out to support the team when they play Gillingham tomorrow at the Manadon Hub (kick-off 2pm). Argyle go into the match against Gillingham looking to secure the Double over the Ken side after beating them 2-0 earlier in the campaign to register their first win of the season. They go in to the game in high spirits after goals from captain Kate Middleton and 16-year-old Beth Everson and an own goal saw them to a 3-1 win against Stevenage in the semi-final of the National League Plate competition.
by Dave Potham by Bleazard was turned into her own net by a Stevenage defender and Argyle moved into the last four. Leonard likened his team's performance to a Del Boy car." He said: "We start and we stall it; we start and we stall it; we just stuttered our way through the game but we were still good enough to beat Stevenage." It has been a difficult time for boss Leonard as, within a three-week period, he lost five key players from the midfield engine-room. However, the squad has dug deep, with a number of players being given their chance to stake a claim for more regular appearances. Argyle now face three away matches in a row.
Leonard said: "These girls play for nothing; they deserve the support - we are just a step away from semi-professional football and we have over 100 girls in our system."
It has been a terrific week for the Development team, who beat local rivals Plympton 4-2 to extend their lead at the top of the South West League Western Division, with striker Nicola Champion's double taking her season's tally to 15.
The breakthrough came in the 19th minute, when Middleton met a Helen Bleazard corner to thump the ball low into the net. Four minutes later, Argyle won possession from a Stevenage throw-in, Bow Jackson played the ball to Everson, who calmly took it past a defender and slotted into the bottom corner for her first senior goal.
Manager Rob Bonney said: "It was a game that we totally expected. Plympton are a very capable and experienced side at this level. You never felt at ease, even at 3-1. A few words were said at half-time by all of our coaches and, in the second half, we were much improved.
Argyle were stunned on the hour mark when they did not deal with a huge punt up the field by goalkeeper Hannah Vandersluis, which left Nicole Emmings racing clear to shoot past Ben Kyle. The deciding goal came with less than 15 minutes remaining when a great run and cross
"Our youngsters faced a really stiff challenge and overcame it. There will be plenty of twists and turns in the remainder of the season but we must make sure we are up there, challenging." Tomorrow, they are also at home at Manadon, where they take on Bristol Ladies Union in the League Cup (kick-off 2pm).

SEC’S FOOTBALL
GOOD afternoon and welcome to everyone for today’s EFL2 encounter against Newport County AFC for what is another important match as we look to accumulate enough points to get us where we want to be next season. Despite coming very close to gaining all three points on Tuesday night, the point turned out to be a hard-earned one that narrowed the gap between Argyle and the top of the table, and which could prove vital by April 25. As well as playing seven first-team fixtures in February, we are also hosting reserve and Academy fixtures at Home Park this month. Tuesday sees us taking on Swansea in the Under-15 Floodlit Cup (kick-off 6.30pm) and I am sure that the players are looking forward to playing on the excellent main stadium pitch.
There is certainly a feeling the current Salary Cost Management Protocol rules that were introduced in League Two in 2003-4 and adopted by League One in 2012-13 need to be refreshed, if not completely re-worked. In simple terms, SCMP limits the amount that clubs can spend on contracted and loan player wages to the sum of 50% (League Two) or 60% (League One) of football turnover and fortune income. Fortune income includes equity, player trading, cup prize money and TV facility fee receipts. So, by definition, it cannot be accurately forecast from one season to the next.
The Premier League Cup returns on the following Monday, February 10, when Everton are the visitors for a 7pm kick-off. We have done well in this competition this season and a win against the Premier League team could see us close to progressing to the knock-out stage.
Unfortunately, there is nothing in the rules to prevent clubs spending excessive amounts in areas other than player wages, which can lead to financial difficulties.
Meanwhile, at Bristol Rovers’ request, we have reversed our Central League fixtures and now play them at Home on Tuesday, February 18 (2pm). As is the case for all our non-first team fixtures, the Mayflower Grandstand will be open, as will Club Argyle, providing a great opportunity to sample our fantastic new facilities that are proving very popular on match-days and nonmatch days alike.
COYG.
Off the field, this week, there is an important meeting hosted by the EFL for all League One and Two clubs, where the current regulations surrounding financial controls in these leagues will be discussed, with the plan that any suggested changes will be voted on during the summer annual general meeting in June, which this year is being held in Oxford. The recent well-documented financial issues at a number of EFL clubs, together with the consequential impacts, as well as increasing player wage costs, have been the catalyst for clubs wanting change to financial regulations and/or sanctions and this meeting will explore potential alternatives to the current arrangements.
It is a complex area, and there will no doubt be much debate over the coming months. Enjoy the match,
Zac

ALTHOUGH Argyle’s youngsters played well enough, their performance was not enough to upset their deadly rivals who were left celebrating a EFL Youth Alliance League double over the Pilgrims. The Grecians opened the scoring on nine minutes with a header from seven yards but, to their credit, Argyle hit back to level, six minutes later, when Jarvis Cleal’s left wing corner found Ollie Tomlinson scoring with a towering header. The home side restored their lead, five minutes before the break when a corner found a striker unmarked at the back post to head home. The second half was a more even affair but once again it was Exeter who found the way to goal as Argyle gave away possession on the left flank and City caught Argyle on the break to complete the scoring. Argyle: Harry Townsend, Isaac Burdon, Ollie Tomlinson, Oscar Halls (Finley Craske 60), Jarvis Cleal, Will Jenkins-Davies (Angel Wariuh 70), Charlie Miller, Jude Boyd, Jeremiah Medine, Rubin Wilson, A Trialist (Oscar Massey 60). Substitutes (not used): Tyler Coombes, Alfie Wotton.

Oxford United Under-18s 7 Argyle 1
THIS was not the manner in which Argyle’s youngsters would have wanted to finish their EFL Youth Alliance fixtures as Oxford extracted ample revenge for the 4-1 defeat the Pilgrims had inflicted on them in the very first game of the season. The high-flying Oxford side adapted to the awkward conditions far quicker than their visitors and were 3-0 ahead after 20 minutes. Argyle did improve for the rest of the first half, with Rubin Wilson forcing a good save out of the home goalkeeper before Isaac Burdon spurned a good chance by firing straight at the home custodian. Oxford took 10 minutes of the second period to add a fourth goal and a further two in five
minutes left Argyle stunned and facing a 6-0 deficit. Sixteen-year-old Oscar Massey did pull a goal back on 70 minutes, only for Oxford to complete the scoring five minutes later. Argyle will now play in the Merit League Two which will start on Saturday, February 15. Their league will consist of Bristol Rovers, Forest Green Rovers, Cheltenham Town and Newport County from the South West Division, while Luton Town, Gillingham, Leyton Orient, Barnet and MK Dons provide the opposition from the South East Division. Argyle: Harry Townsend (Tyler Coombes 70), Isaac Burdon, Ollie Tomlinson, Alfie Wotton (Brandon Pursall 60), Carlo Garside, Charlie Miller, Jude Boyd, Jeremiah Medine, Rubin Wilson, Scott Crocker (Oscar Massey 60), Finley Craske.
PREMIER LEAGUE UNDER-23 CUP
Watford u-23s 1 Argyle 3
ARGYLE achieved a fine win in their latest Premier League Under-23 Cup group match to give themselves a great opportunity of qualifying for the final knockout stages of the competition. Goals from Klaidi Lolos, Conor Grant and former Watford player Joel Grant gave the Pilgrims a victory at St Albans that saw them leapfrog their hosts in the four-team group, to be one point behind Fulham and two off leaders Everton after four of their six matches. Argyle’s chances of qualification now rest on the results of their final two games, both against the leading pair of teams, and both at Home Park. “We are in with a shout of maybe getting in that top two,” said a delighted Pilgrims’ coach Kevin Nancekivell, who saw Argyle take an early two-goal lead before conceding towards the interval. “In the first half, we played some great stuff - pressed the ball in the right areas, looked a threat going forward - and really should have been more than just the one goal up at half-time. “In the second half, we didn’t get on the front foot as much as we wanted to and Watford probably had the better of it for 45 minutes, but we got a little bit more control into the game towards the end, which resulted in Joel scoring a great goal to finish it. “I’m really, really pleased. It’s a big win for the boys. The senior players were outstanding and got some minutes under their belts.
“It’s another step on the development ladder for our boys. These are the type of games we want to be playing in.” This is only the second season in which the Pilgrims have entered the Premier League Under-23 Cup, and progress has been quick as they have adapted to life in the new competition. Kevin said: “We’re mixing it with the likes of Aston Villa, Everton, Derby, Watford, Fulham, and we’re doing okay. “We want to do better. We want to be up there with them all the time but, for where we are at the moment, we’re doing okay. “There is lots more to improve on, but it’s been a really good evening. I’m really pleased.” Argyle now entertain Everton at Home Park on Monday, February 10, and host Fulham at the Theatre of Greens on Tuesday, February 25. Both games kick off at 7pm. Argyle (3-5-2): Mike Cooper; Joe Riley, Tom Purrington, Mike Peck; Jarvis Cleal, Conor Grant, Josh Grant, Adam Randell (capt, Charlie Miller 80), Ryan Law; Klaidi Lolos, Joel Grant (Rubin Wilson 70).

WORDS TO THE WISE
ALEX MASTERS has been leafing through previous season’s copies of the Pilgrim match-day programme to reminisce about Argyle life in the past.
Argyle v Newcastle United. Barclays League Division Two Friday, December 20, 1991. £1 “It was a good team performance and it was nice to see Mark Fiore scoring once again. He showed excellent reactions in scoring the only goal, which once again a vital one.”
TODAY’S OPPOSITION
Newcastle’s manager was former Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina great Ossie Ardiles, with the programme detailing his success as a player. “The Guardian described Newcastle’s manager as an ‘international soccer legend’. It’s a fitting description for a man who reached the pinnacle of the game as a player.
COVER STARS
The cover for this Friday night game features three players, the hidden Mark Fiore, Robbie Turner and a grounded Dwight Marshall, battling for the ball in the first game of the 1991-1992 season – a 2-1 win against Barnsley at Home Park. The picture shows Robbie scoring; strike partners Dwight later netted the winner. The game against Barnsley was Marshall’s debut for the Greens after a transfer from non-league Grays Athletic. It was to be the first of his 14 goals that season, becoming a fan favourite as he went on to win the club’s Player of the Season.
MANAGER’S NOTES
The first inside page of the programme features the notes of manager David Kemp. “These are my first programme notes since our fine victory over a strong Ipswich side, which won us the Barclays Performance of the Week Award,” wrote Kempy. “Ipswich never really created a scoring chance. In fact, the only two opportunities they had both came from defensive slips by us. Thankfully, they didn’t capitalise on them as most teams have against us this season.
“Ardiles played in the multi-talented Argentinian team which won the World Cup in 1978, producing performances which persuaded Spurs to bring him to England 13 years ago, along with Ricky Villa. “He played 140 matches for the White Hart Lane club, including in their FA Cup triumph of 1981 against Manchester City, before moving to Paris St. Germain in the French First Division.” On his adventure into football management, the programme said: “After moving into management at Swindon, his insistence on a skilful passing game reaped instant dividend. “The Argentinian’s record at Swindon made him Newcastle’s first choice
when Jim Smith quit near the end of last season.” However, Ardiles’ time with the Toon was largely unsuccessful as they finished two places above Argyle in 20th position and he was replaced by Kevin Keegan at the end of the season.
PILGRIMS PAST
The programme takes a look through the Pilgrims programme’ archive, as it details games from five, ten and twenty years ago. 5 Years Ago - 1986-87 “The Greens lost further ground on the leaders when they crashed 3-2 at Home Park to Portsmouth in front of a 21,249 Boxing Day crowd.” 10 Years Ago - 1981-82 “The Greens extended their unbeaten run to eight games against Swindon Town with a 2-1 victory. Jeff Cooke continued his successful return to Home Park by scoring his seventh goal 14 appearances. Kevin Hodges scored Argyle’s other goal in a victory that moved them up three places in the table towards safety.” 20 Years Ago - 1971-72 “Argyle recovered from the 2-1 home reverse against Shrewsbury when they travelled to bottom club Mansfield Town and emerged with a 3-2 victory.”

KEEP ON KEEPING ON
When did you first realise you wanted to be a ’keeper? I first fully realised I wanted to be a ’keeper when I got my first contract in the Academy. Before that, I was trying to play on the wing when I was younger - but realised I wasn’t very good and I enjoyed keeping goal a lot more. Do you think keepers get enough protection these days? Definitely. I think the officials have the right balance between what is and isn’t a foul now, and players even recognise when not to go into a challenge when the ’keeper is clearly favourite to win the ball. It is nowhere near like 30 odd years ago where strikers could get away with it. With there being only one position available in the first team for a goalkeeper, how do you motivate yourself when you are not playing? It’s not very hard to stay motivated personally. I’m only 20, and if I was to let my standards slip now then I haven’t got a chance in progressing as I get older. Football can change really quickly too. If I wasn’t ready for when the time came then I’d only have myself to blame. I’ve still played under23s and reserve games and they help me stay match ready. How does it feel to have the No.1 shirt? Brilliant! Since I joined the club at age nine, all I wanted was to be a professional footballer and to have the No.1 shirt here, and I’m very grateful for it. How is your relationship with Alex Palmer, and how important is it to bounce off each other? It’s a healthy rivalry, I’d say. It can be tough being a goalkeeper as there is only one position up for grabs, but
What makes you cringe when you think about it?
“Probably my finger dislocations – even when I look at them, they’re not straight! "
we encourage each other to learn different things off of one another in training. The rivalry is good for us both as it doesn’t let us get too comfy or settled. I feel like we push each other really well. In terms of league football, you have not conceded a goal. You must be happy with that? I’ve only played about 80 minutes! But yeah, I guess it’s a nice stat to have, it would be even better if I could keep that one going in the future! What do you remember of your debut for Argyle? All of it. I remember the whole day because, when we had the team walk in the morning, Cam Sangster said out of nowhere ‘got a feeling you’ll come on tonight’. Next thing I know, Kyle got injured on the stroke of half-time and I was warming up. I don’t think I’ll ever forget how my legs wouldn’t stop shaking! But I managed to compose myself and to not concede and get a result at Ewood Park on my debut that I had worked long and hard for was great. In your debut game, and the last game of the 2018-19 season, you came off the bench. How do you prepare yourself for those situations? I don’t think many keepers can say that their first two appearances had been off the bench for a start - but it’s such a reactive response to what has gone on. You have got to switch on straight away - there and then, which was tough, but once I got my first touch of the ball, I felt a lot calmer. From your social media posts you seem to be a keen cricket fan, where did your love for that stem from? And are you any good at cricket? Yeah, I love cricket. I used to go up and watch my dad play village cricket as a toddler doing the scoreboard, then took it up myself. I managed to end up playing for Devon from under-12 to under-16. I went on a tour of South Africa with them, which was one of the best two weeks of my life, but I love watching all forms of the game. I am looking forward to going to one of the West Indies tests this summer. You’ve recently signed a long-term contract at Argyle, you must be delighted to have that sorted? Yeah definitely! It’s nice to know what my near future looks like, and I’m very grateful to the manager for handing me the deal. It wasn’t a hard one to think about. I just need to keep working hard to ensure I get another one in the future. >>>
rAndOm Qs If a feast was held in your honour who would you invite? I guess my family and friends along with some celebrities What would you change about the media? I would not allow them to use social media What is the oldest thing you own? A rugby ball from about 1920 that I won in a raffle

rAndOm Qs What comes to mind when you think of the word 'classy'? An Ian Bell cover drive – wow! What was the last thing you Googled? ‘What was the fastest time to run a mile?’ Who do you feel like you know, even though you’ve never met them? Not sure why, but Iker Casillas What are misconceptions about footballers? That they only play for the money
>>> It must be great to be spoken about in such high regard? Yeah, look, it’s nice I get talked about in that way – rather than getting called rubbish – but I don’t read into that sort of stuff too much. Every young player has potential, don’t they? That said, it’s a nice confidence booster in some ways knowing that people think you’re not bad. Who was your hero growing up and why? I would probably say Petr Cech when I was growing up. He made some unreal saves in his prime, but Rhys Wilmot as well because he's been my coach from minute one - so he’s helped me massively along the way, and hopefully in the future, too. You played a crucial role in beating Man City in the FA Youth Cup, talk us through that? Yeah, I suppose that’s one of my better games I’ve had. Truth be told, I made a lot of saves but they were all hit in and around me! The boys were unbelievable that night, holding out for 120 minutes and holding their nerve on penalties. What a surreal night that was, and then to follow it up with another clean sheet against Burnley away and a last-minute winner was even sweeter! Who is the best player to have played against you and why? When I played my debut, Danny Graham and Bradley Dack (for Blackburn Rovers) were very clever players, and they opened my eyes up a little bit to how good the next level is. In terms of pedigree, I’ve played Bournemouth a couple of times in reserve games and Ryan Fraser and Jordan Ibe were both class in those games, too. Would you rather win 5-4 or draw 0-0?
As much as I hate having a bad game, I hate losing even more, so I would take the 5-4 win. You have come up through the academy at Home Park. Do you feel that youth football prepares you well enough for men’s football? Academy football is good for developing your skills, but doesn’t compare to the physicality, pace and importance of first-team football. As an academy player it’s more or less about the performance than league position, whereas in league football in the men’s game, three points is everything. Due to the way the manager plays, you are encouraged to play quickly, and f rom the back. How do you find that? I have become used to it a lot more now, it’s good that the gaffer gives us the freedom to play out from the back. We all know the patterns of how to get out, but it’s a much more effective way of keeping the ball. We have got to look to turn teams sometimes though as you can’t be too predictable.

SAMMY BLACK
TWO generations of club legend Sammy Black’s family are honoured guests at Home Park today for the Sky Bet League Two clash with Newport County.
Sammy’s daughter, Gloria Spilsbury, and granddaughter, Tracy Charlick, are guests for the visit of the Exiles, having been invited by the Pilgrims’ Director of Football Neil Dewsnip – who met Tracy through her work at Derriford Hospital, having injured his finger doing the washing-up! Tracy, a healthcare assistant at Derriford, took care of Neil, and soon got chatting to him about their shared interest in Argyle. “Neil came in and he had an infected finger – he was only in for a couple of days,” explained Tracy. “He told me that he was doing the dishes, so he says, and he cut his finger on a knife. The infection had spread up his arm – but it cleared up quite quickly. “I was making small-talk and asked if he was an Argyle fan – I had no idea who he was! I mentioned my granddad, and that’s how we got talking. I’m not a football fan, really, but I
do follow Argyle – just because of my granddad. I know that he is a club legend.” Sammy Black holds the all-time goalscoring record for the Greens, having netted 182 times in 491 appearances between 1924 and 1938. Upon retiring from the game, Sammy returned to the city, where he passed away in 1977. Tracy will be bringing her mum, Gloria, with her to Home Park on Saturday – as well as Gloria’s husband, Dennis. Incredibly, despite being the daughter of one of the Pilgrims greatest ever players, Saturday’s visit will be Gloria’s first to the Theatre of Greens to watch a competitive game. “I have never been to Home Park, actually - even though my dad had such a great career at Argyle,” explained Gloria. “I was born after he had retired from playing, so missed out on watching him then.” Not being a huge football fan herself, Gloria’s connection to the club is preserved through a number of articles illustrating the success of her father. She recalls watching him play only once, during an exhibition game after he had hung up his boots. “I have all the paper clippings and things like that from my mum,” said Gloria. “I never saw him play, other than in an exhibition match against TV Stars in Plymouth – years ago. I can’t remember if it was at Home Park, but that’s the only time I ever saw him play. I’m looking forward to it – it will be a bit different for me!”

WHERE
The JobServe Community Stadium was opened in 2008 and has been the home of Colchester United since the Us left their old Layer Road ground. The stadium also plays host to a range of other activities, including conferences, banqueting, weddings, parties and events. It hosts boxing dinners, darts opens, comedy nights, tribute band nights, fashion shows, award ceremonies and proms. The stadium was used as an open-air music venue for the first time on June 29, 2014, for an Elton John concert. The ground is made up of four stands, including the West Stand on the west side of the pitch, which towers over the other three. All four the stands are single-tiered, covered and all-seated stands with the West Stand consisting of a row of executive boxes and corporate hospitality areas running across the back of it. The Weston Homes Stand, at the South end of the stadium, also has a police control box incorporated into it. Visiting supporters are usually housed in the northern part of the JobServe Stand, where around 1,000 supporters can be accommodated, but clubs with a larger travelling support also have the Roman Cars Stand, where up to 2,000 supporters can be seated.

Colchester United v Argyle Sky Bet League Two Saturday, February 8 3pm Capacity 10,105 (1,000-2,000 away) Record Attendance: 10,064 v Norwich City, January 16, 2010 Miles and miles to follow the Greens: 583 return How long: five hours and three minutes by car; nine hours and 23 minutes by train
on to the A38 from Outland Road and merge on to the M5. Exit from Junction 29 on to Honiton Road and continue for 19 miles. Continue on to the A303 until you reach the M3 and continue for 11 miles before taking the M25 exit. Exit at junction 28 and follow United Way to your destination.
Car-Parking There are 700 car parking spaces available at the stadium which cost from £6-£10, depending on how close to the exit you are parked. You must prebook your car-parking space in advance via the Colchester United website; all the spaces very frequently sell out. If that happens, fans are directed to an overspill car-park located on the nearby industrial estate, which costs £8. Food and Drink The JobServe Community Stadium is on the outskirts of Colchester which means that there are not very many pubs around, the closest one being three quarters of a mile away and that admits only home fans. The Dog and Pheasant and the Balkerne Gate pubs both allow away supporters. Inside the ground, typical food is on sale in the kiosks behind the away end - pasties, pies, burgers and sausage rolls to name a few. The club also allows access to the bar and toilets located on the concourse area of the Weston Homes Stand before each home game, from 12.15pm. Drinks can be taken outside of the stadium to enjoy the pre-match entertainment such as live bands playing in the marquee.

Catherine Jackson & Family, donated to St Luke’s Hospice At St Luke’s, we simply couldn’t do what we do, caring for terminally ill people and helping them live well to the end of their lives, without the continued support of our community. Thanks to the way you get behind our charity, we’re here to come alongside local families who need us at the toughest of times. This is about more than our doctors and nurses giving expert hands-on medical care, it’s emotional, practical and spiritual support for our patients and their loved ones, too – making very difficult circumstances that little bit easier.
If you’re part of a company, choosing St Luke’s as your Charity of the Year is a great way to show your support for us. We’ll work with you on events and projects that will unite your staff behind a fantastic local cause and develop their skills as they fundraise, volunteer and take part in challenges that make a difference. We’ll be with you every step of the way, ensuring you get the very best from your partnership with us and increasing public awareness of your brand. We’d love to discuss opportunities with you! SecuriGuard
There have been a number of very positive changes at Plymouth Argyle over the past couple of years, notably new ownership, new management and significant investment in the club all of which is very positive news for the future.
Although Securi-Guard has not been around as long as PAFC we have been a significant feature of the Plymouth business network for well over thirty years and have undergone significant transformation over the last year.
Formerly a family company we were purchased in December 2018 by Scutum SA, a company based in France, and one of the most significant security companies in Europe. So we also have new ownership and new management which is equally very positive news for our company. Securi-Guard naturally has strong links with many of the major institutions in the Plymouth area, both Public and Private. Since Plymouth Argyle is a sporting flagship of the South West it is only natural that Securi-Guard is a staunch ally and trusted partner. Like all of Plymouth Argyle’s supporters we hope that the club can mount a significant challenge for promotion to commence a steady rise up the rungs of the EFL ladder back to where they belong.

ARGYLE IN THE EFL IN THE 2010s (PART III) A total of 206 players turned out for Argyle in the EFL in the 2010s. Gary Sawyer appeared in the first match, at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, January 16, 2010 and, of course, is still part of the squad today in his second spell with the club. However, he ranks only fourth in the list of highest appearances. Former skipper Curtis Nelson leads the way with 204 starts, plus a further seven games from the bench, making him the only man to appear in more than 200 league matches for the Greens in the last decade. Overall, nine players made more than 100 starting appearances as detailed in the table below: PLAYER Curtis Nelson Luke McCormick Graham Carey Gary Sawyer Reuben Reid David Fox Conor Hourihane Yann Songo’o Maxime Blanchard
ST APP SB APP 204 7 168 0 164 7 164 5 126 9 119 9 119 6 103 18 100 4
At the other extreme, eight players made only a single substitute appearance for us in the 2010s: Alex Battle, Jordan Bentley, Alex Bray, Yoann Folly, Alan Gow, Ryan Leonard, Karleigh Osborne and Matt Rickard. Bray, a winger who was on loan from Swansea City in the 2014-15 season, played just 12 minutes before he succumbed to a serious knee injury in a 1-0 win away to Luton Town on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Tyler Harvey leads the way in terms of substitute appearances, on 41. He is followed by Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, on 36, and Craig Tanner, on 35. As far as goals are concerned, we scored a total of 562 in the EFL in the last decade, nine of which were own goals.
The 553 scored by Pilgrims players were shared across 115 men, with Graham Carey leading the way on 45. Our top ten goalscorers over the past ten years is: PLAYER GOALS Graham Carey 45 Reuben Reid 44 Jake Jervis 27 Lewis Alessandra 18 Freddie Ladapo 18 Bradley Wright-Phillips 17 Ruben Lameiras 17 Conor Hourihane 15 Joel Grant 14 Antoni Sarcevic 13 Reuben Reid scored our only EFL hat-trick of the decade, in a 3-0 win over Exeter City at St James Park in League Two on Saturday, February 21, 2015. He also scored another treble against Lincoln City in the FA Cup. So there you have Argyle in the EFL in the 2010s, a decade which started with Victor Moses scoring the only goal for Crystal Palace against us at Home Park and ended with Niall Canavan netting an injury-time winner for the Greens at home to Stevenage. Overall, the last ten years will not be remembered with much fondness by the Green Army – it included three relegations, administration and a subsequent ten-point deduction and saw us finish the decade playing two divisions lower than where we started it. That having been said, there was also a promotion, a second visit to Wembley and the two FA Cup matches with Liverpool. The new grandstand and management team mean that we enter the 2020s with new optimism – let us hope that, in ten years’ time, we can look back on three promotions, no relegations and a place in the EPL. We can but dream…

INTRODUCING…
53
HISTORY
Founded: 11912 Home: Rodney Parade Nicknames: The Exiles, The Ironsides, The Port, The County Rivals: Cardiff City The club began life in 1912 in the Southern League before being invited to become founder members of the EFL Third Division in 1920. They failed re-election in 1931 but were elected back into the League the following year. The second world war meant that they had to wait until the 1946–47 season to take their place in the Second Division and they were relegated at the end of that campaign. In the 1980s, Newport suffered financial difficulties, with a double relegation costing them their EFL place in 1988 and the club went out of business in February 1989. The club reformed but were initially unable to play at their home ground at Somerton Park, so picked up the nickname of the Exiles. They won the Hellenic League in 1989–90 and were promoted out of the Southern League Midland Division in 1994–95.
While playing at Newport Stadium, they were relegated from the Premier Division in 1997, before winning promotion out of the Midland Division again in 1998–99. Placed in the Conference South in 2004, they went on to be crowned champions in 2009-10 and, after moving into Rodney Parade in 2012, they returned to the EFL following a 24-year absence by winning the Conference National playoff final in 2013.

Newport County boss hopes for swift end to Joe Ledley transfer saga Andrew Penman, South Wales Argus
Newport County AFC manager Michael Flynn is hoping to add one or two more new signings before Friday night’s transfer deadline, and he wants to get a deal for Joe Ledley done “sooner rather than later”. Ledley is a free agent so he can join a new club after the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday, but Flynn doesn’t want the long-running saga to go on for too much longer. The Wales international midfielder was linked with the Exiles in October before joining Championship club Charlton Athletic on a short-term contract. Ledley has been training with the Exiles over the past few weeks and is still doing so, and he was at Rodney Parade to see the win over Macclesfield Town on Tuesday night. “Hopefully we might get one or two more in; I’m still looking, still trying,” said Flynn after that win.
“Joe was at the game and he’s still training with us.” Asked if the ball was in Ledley’s court, the manager said: “Kind of. We’ll see what happens. “If anything’s going to happen, I’d rather do it sooner than later. “It’s not going to drag on because, I’ve got to be honest, I’m bored of the questions! “I know you’ve got to ask them; I understand that. But, trust me, if there is an update, I’ll tell you.”
County Return to Winning Ways After Macclesfield Home Victory Jay Bayford, Newport-county.co.uk
Joss Labadie produced a captain’s performance to lead Newport County AFC to a convincing victory over Macclesfield Town at Rodney Parade. The margin of victory didn’t tell the full story as the Exiles dominated large spells of the game but they couldn’t find the extra goals their display deserved. With the games coming thick and fast Newport County opted to make three changes. Labadie recovered from the illness that kept him out the line-up at Leyton Orient to take his place in midfield.
Salford City semi-final for Newport County AFC if they win rearranged Leasing.com Trophy tie David Williams, South Wales Argus NEWPORT County will host League Two rivals Salford City in the Leasing. com Trophy semi-finals if they win their rearranged last-eight clash. The Exiles take on Leicester City Under-21 at Rodney Parade on February 4 after last week's tie was postponed because of a frozen pitch in Newport.
Scot Bennett filled in at the back with Mark O’Brien and Ryan Inniss both unavailable.
Last night's semi-final draw saw the winners of that game paired given a home tie with Salford in the semis, with holders Portsmouth entertaining Exeter City in the other last-four game.
It took a while for the players to warm up in the freezing cold conditions at Rodney Parade in the second Unsponsored Derby of the season.
The semi-finals will be played in the week commencing February 17.
Jordan Green was handed the first start of his second spell at the Club while top scorer Padraig Amond returned upfront.
The Silkmen put their plan to action first with former Exile Emmanuel Osadebe finding space to play Arthur Gnahoua through on goal but Tom King, just like he did at the Breyer Group Stadium on Saturday, stood strong to deny the attacker. Newport started to enjoy space on the wings with Ryan Haynes and Ashley Baker operating more as wingers than full backs as the first half progressed and it was Labadie who almost profited. He blazed a header over from a Robbie Willmott corner before Macclesfield goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell kept him out from close range. The County captain was proving to be a real threat and it proved third time lucky as Green drove into the box and fired the ball across goal. Willmott’s flick fell kindly for Labadie to nod the ball home. The duel between Labadie and Mitchell continued with the post this time coming to the visitors’ rescue before Amond had his first sight of goal – from a Haynes clearance – but Mitchell got the better of the Irishman. After enjoying 60 per cent possession, the Exiles were almost made to pay for not taking their chances when a free kick from deep caught the defence out and allowed Joe Ironside a shot at goal. King was quick to react and blocked his effort. Jamille Matt has been in rich form for the Exiles in recent weeks and the expectant fans were just waiting for the net to bulge once Amond had sent him through one-on-one shortly after the break. However, Mitchell’s right leg kept the deficit to just one goal. The hosts continued to dominate proceedings but couldn’t add a second goal their performance merited so manager Michael Flynn sent on Billy Waters on 72 minutes in the hope he could add the finishing touch. Tristan Abrahams followed him onto the pitch for the final few minutes and although he couldn’t add to his 10 goals this season, the Exiles saw out the three points comfortably for their fourth win in five games.

Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects ten post-war Newport County Classic Campaigns 1948-49
56
Newport County reached the FA Cup fifth round in 1948-49. Tom Bromilow’s side defeated Brighton and Leytonstone before gaining a shock 3-1 victory at Leeds United in the third round. Newport then triumphed 3-1 at top-flight Huddersfield Town in a fourth round replay after a 3-3 draw before losing 3-2 at that season’s champions Portsmouth in front of 48,581. The thrilling FA Cup run contrasted with disappointing league form as Newport won just one of their opening 14 games and crashed to an 11-1 defeat at Notts County in January, finishing 15th in the Third Division (South). Reg Parker was top scorer, while George Roffi was ever present.
1972-73
County narrowly missed promotion on goal average in 1972-73. Billy Lucas’ side lost just four of their opening 18 Fourth Division games and trounced Hartlepool 5-1. They slipped down the table after gaining only one point from their next four matches but charged back into the top four with five straight wins and hammered Gillingham 5-1. Just one victory in eight games, scoring just three goals, saw Newport slip to sixth place. They revived hopes with a 5-1 win at Doncaster but were pipped to promotion by Aldershot despite winning their last two matches. Willie Brown was leading marksman, while John Macey and Willie Screen were ever-present.
1979-80
Len Ashurst guided Newport to a promotion and Welsh Cup Double in 1979-80. The Ironsides won their opening two games and the introduction of summer signing John Aldridge sparked a run of just one defeat in 13 matches that lifted Newport up to second place, with Aldo grabbing his first league hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Stockport in mid-November. A club record ten consecutive league victories included a 5-2 demolition of Halifax
c i ss a Cl and Newport clinched promotion in third place with a 4-2 win at Walsall on the final day. John Aldridge was leading marksman, while Welsh internationals Steve Lowndes and Nigel Vaughan were both ever-present.
1980-81
Newport County reached the European Cup-Winners’ Cup quarter-finals in 1980-81. They hammered Crusaders 4-0 and Haugar 6-0, then gained a marvellous 2-2 draw at East German side Carl Zeiss Jena in the quarter-final first-leg before narrowly losing 1-0 at home to the eventual finalists. Len Ashurst’s side finished mid-table in the Third Division despite being without the injured John Aldridge for much of the second half of the season, beating Chesterfield 5-1 and netting four goals in both games against Carlisle United, then against Blackpool, Hull City and Sheffield United. Top scorer Dave Gwyther and Tommy Tynan netted 28 league goals together.
1982-83
County narrowly missed promotion to the Second Division in 1982-83. Colin Addison’s side were early pace-setters, winning 5-1 against Orient and AFC Bournemouth as they climbed to second place by mid-November. They maintained their promotion challenge and a thrilling run of ten wins in 11 games took them top of the table in early April, with a crowd of 16,052 watching their 1-0 win at home to Cardiff City. But Newport finished fourth after gaining only four points from their last seven matches. Ever-present leading scorer Tommy Tynan and John Aldridge netted 42 league goals overall and ten players made 40 or more League appearances.
1994-95
Newport AFC won the Southern League Midland Division title by a 14-point margin in 1994-95. Despite the distraction of fighting a High Court action against the Welsh FA for restraint of trade, their fine seven-match unbeaten start included a 6-2 win at Forest Green Rovers and a 4-0 victory in the return game in mid-November heralded a thrilling run of 14 successive wins. Ceri Williams scored four goals in their 5-2 victory at home to promotion rivals Ilkeston in early December as Newport went top of the table for the first time, remaining in pole position. Ceri Williams was leading scorer with 32 League goals, while Ray John was Player of the Year.
cCAMPAIGNS 2012-13
Newport regained EFL status after an absence of 25 years in 2012-13. Justin Edinburgh’s side were early Conference leaders, starting with five straight wins and losing only two of their opening 14 games. They hammered Cambridge United 6-2 and Luton Town 5-2 at Rodney Parade, then triumphed 4-2 at Lincoln City. Five successive wins, including a 2-0 victory over eventual champions Mansfield Town, kept them in contention before just one win in six matches ended title hopes. They qualified for the Conference play-offs in third place, beating Grimsby Town 2-0 in the semi-finals, then Wrexham 2-0 in the Wembley final.
2018-19
1998-99
Newport AFC won promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division in 1998-99. Karl Bayliss grabbed a hat-trick as Tim Harris’ side began with a 4-0 win over Sutton Coldfield. They also scored four goals in both matches against Stourbridge, then hammered Bilston 5-0 and Bloxwich 6-0 in quick succession, becoming the only Southern League club with an unbeaten home record. But disappointing away form, with nine defeats, cost the Midland Division title as they finished runners-up to Clevedon. Karl Bayliss was top scorer with 31 goals, while Bradley Thomas was Player of the Year. They became known as Newport County again that summer.
2009-10
County won the Conference South title with a club record 103 points in 2009-10. Dean Holdsworth’s side were unbeaten in their opening 13 games, including a 5-1 win over Eastleigh, until losing 1-0 at Staines. They remained top with a 21-match unbeaten run, scoring five goals past Thurrock, St Albans and Basingstoke, before a shock 2-1 defeat at Thurrock in late March. Newport’s third defeat was 4-0 at Havant & Waterlooville. They were the only Conference club with an unbeaten home record, finishing 28 points ahead of Dover. Craig Reid and Sam Foley scored 40 Conference goals between them, while Glyn Thompson was everpresent.
County reached the FA Cup fifth round for only the second time in 2018-19. Mike Flynn’s side defeated Metropolitan Police and Wrexham before goals by Jamille Matt and Padraig Amond gave them a shock 2-1 FA Cup third-round win at home to top-flight Leicester. Matty Dolan’s last-gasp equaliser gave Newport a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, then Robbie Willmott and Amond scored in their 2-0 victory in the replay. They lost 4-1 at home to Treble winners Manchester City in the fifth round. Newport qualified for the League Two play-offs in seventh position, beating Mansfield in the semifinals before losing 1-0 to Tranmere at Wembley.

MICHAEL FLYNN At the time of arrival, Flynn’s Exiles were 11 points adrift at the bottom of League Two. County then closed the gap with an incredible run of four wins from five WELSHMAN Michael Flynn has a long-standing relationship with Newport which goes back to before the turn of the new millennium, both as a player and now as the club’s manager. He spent the first three years of his playing career yo-yoing between Newport County and Barry Town. He made the move to Barry twice before joining Wigan in 2002. Wigan won Division Two in 2003 but Flynn’s playing time was restricted so had a short loan at Blackpool before joining Gillingham in January 2005. He finished his tenure with the Gills as captain and top scorer, with 12 goals to his name. After one season back at the Seasiders, three goals were not enough to win him a new deal. Similar numbers the following season – four goals in 25 appearances – eventually led to a move to Valley Parade in 2009. He made just shy of 100 appearances as a Bantam before swapping Parades.
He returned to Rodney Parade to become a Newport player for the third time. In the 2012–13 season, he was part of the Newport team that finished third in the league, reaching the Conference National play-offs. Newport County won the final versus Wrexham at Wembley Stadium 2–0 to return to the EFL after a 25-year absence with promotion to League Two. He was released in 2015 as a player and a coach and then went on to coach Undy Athletic, a Division Two Welsh side. However, he returned to the club in 2017 as the caretakermanager following Graham Westley’s dismissal. At the time of arrival, Flynn’s Exiles were 11 points adrift at the bottom of League Two. County then closed the gap with an incredible run of four wins from five before a 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley saw them leapfrog Hartlepool United in late April. That came five days after Argyle had dented their hopes of survival with a 6-1 thumping at Home Park, a win that sealed our promotion to League One. Results meant that the fates of both County and Hartlepool were yet to be decided and it would go down to the final day. On May 6, County were roared on by 7000 fans in Rodney Parade. They did deliver and secured their EFL status, beating Notts County 2-1. Following that terrific achievement, Flynn was given a twoyear contract. Last year, County lost out in the play-off final, going down 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers.

LET'S GO ROUND AGAIN Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten players who had more than one spell at Newport County
60
HARRY HARRIS
Forward Harry Harris was Newport County’s top scorer in three successive seasons. Initially with Undy United, he joined Newport in September 1954 and formed a notable partnership with Tommy Johnston, missing just one match in 1955-56. He was sold to Portsmouth for £10,000 in July 1957 and featured in their 1961-62 Third Division title campaign. Ever-present for Pompey in 1964-65, he also played in central defence and rejoined Newport on loan in October 1970, netting 59 goals in 172 league games overall for the club before hanging up his boots in May 1971. He later ran his own replacement window company in Leeds and died in June 2004.
ROGER FREESTONE
Welsh international goalkeeper Roger Freestone had three spells at Newport County. Signing professional for Newport in April 1986, he joined Chelsea for £95,000 in March 1987 and was loaned back to Newport for the closing weeks of that season. Conference/EFL appearances overall. He has since been a delivery driver and managed Risca & Gelli United.
LEN HILL
Former Welsh Youth midfielder Len Hill featured in Newport’s 1972-73 promotion near-miss. Initially with hometown Caerleon, he joined Lovells Athletic in September 1961 and moved to Newport in November 1962. The Glamorgan county cricketer was leading marksman in 1967-68 and joined Swansea City for £5,000 in July 1970. He returned to Newport for £2,500 in January 1972 and netted 64 goals in 366 league games overall before moving to Barry Town in July 1974. Following a spell with Minehead, he became Cinderford Town’s player-manager, then president. He was later a building contractor in Newport and died in April 2007.

CHRIS LILYGREEN
Former Welsh Under-23 striker Dave Gwyther featured in Newport’s 1979-80 promotion and Welsh Cup Double success. Signing professional for Swansea in February 1967, he played in the 1969 Welsh Cup final and was ever-present in their 1969-70 promotion success. He was top scorer in four successive seasons before sold to Halifax Town for £12,000 in August 1973. Moving via Rotherham to Newport in December 1979, he also helped them reach the European Cup-Winners’ Cup quarter-finals in 1980-81. Later with Port Talbot, he briefly rejoined Newport in March 1985, netting 28 goals in 107 league games overall, becoming a painter and decorator in Swansea.
Goalkeeper Gary Plumley was County’s ever-present Player of the Year in 1976-77. He turned professional with Leicester City in March 1974 but failed to make an impact and joined Newport in June 1976. Starring in their 1979-80 promotion and Welsh Cup Double success, he moved to Hong Kong side Happy Valley in August 1981, then played for Cardiff City and Ebbw Vale. He had three further spells at Newport during injury crises and made 187 league appearances overall, also making an emergency appearance for Watford, where his father Eddie was secretary, in the 1987 FA Cup semi-final. He ran a wine bar in Caerleon.
STEVE LOWNDES
Welsh international winger Steve Lowndes won the first two of his ten caps while at Newport. He turned professional at Somerton Park in October 1977 and was ever-present as Newport won promotion and the Welsh Cup in 1979-80. Also featuring prominently as they reached the European Cup-Winners’ Cup quarterfinals in 1980-81, he netted 39 goals in 208 league games before moving to Millwall in August 1983. Helping win promotion and reach the FA Cup quarter-final in 1984-85, he joined Barnsley in August 1986 and moved to Hereford United in October 1990. Later with Newport AFC, he became Academy director of coaching at Cirencester College.
Welsh international midfielder Nigel Vaughan gained the first three of his ten caps while at Newport County. Signing professional at Somerton Park in May 1977, he was Player of the Year as Newport won promotion and the Welsh Cup in 1979-80, then were European Cup-Winners’ Cup quarter-finalists in 1980-81, netting 32 goals in 224 league games before reuniting with Len Ashurst at Cardiff City in September 1983. He joined Wolves in August 1987 and featured as they won the Fourth Division title and Third Division title in consecutive seasons. Moving to Hereford United in August 1990, he then assisted several non-league clubs including a spell at Newport AFC.
Striker Chris Lilygreen was Newport AFC’s Player of the Year in 1990-91. Born locally, he impressed with Newport YMCA before joining Newport County in August 1983 and scored four times in 31 League games. He moved to Yeovil Town in June 1985, then had spells at Forest Green Rovers, Bath City, Mangotsfield and Ebbw Vale prior to joining the newly-formed Newport AFC in July 1989. Leading marksman in successive seasons including their 1989-90 Hellenic League and Cup Double success, he joined Barry Town in September 1993, then Ebbw Vale, Mangotsfield and Cwmbran Town. He has managed Caldicot Town and Chepstow Town.

TODAY’S match is the 72nd meeting of Argyle and Newport since the two teams met for the first time at Somerton Park in September 1919. Five of those matches came in one season nearly 100 years later, with the fifth being one of the most memorable games in Argyle history, as CHARLIE ROSE recalls.

THE TEAMS Argyle: Luke McCormick; Oscar Threlkeld, Yann Songo'o, Jakub Sokolik, Gary Sawyer, Antoni Sarcevic, David Fox, Jake Jervis, Graham Carey, Matty Kennedy, Ryan Taylor. Newport County AFC: Joe Day; Scot Bennett, Darren Jones, Mickey Demetriou, David Pipe, Mitchell Rose, Mark Randall, Tom Owen-Evans, Dan Butler, Sean Rigg, Alex Samuel. THE BUILD-UP Following Argyle's 1-1 draw away at Portsmouth on Good Friday, a win against a struggling Newport side would guarantee the Pilgrims promotion to the third tier of English football, their first promotion since the 2003-04 season. Derek Adams' side was in second place in League Two, four points clear of third-placed Pompey but, more importantly, 12 points clear of Luton Town in fourth. A sun-drenched Home Park was the perfect venue for the Green Army's promotion party, but County had their own battle on - to beat the drop. Planted in 23rd place, the Welsh side was well and truly in the relegation dogfight. THE MATCH A packed Home Park witnessed arguably one of the best Argyle' performances for many years, and after the opening exchanges, it was not a matter of if, or when, but of how many. Much to Newport's credit, they defended in numbers and clearly looked to frustrate the attacking line-up Adams had opted for but, in the 39th minute, on-loan Matt Kennedy leapt highest on a loose ball and coolly placed his header out of County goalkeeper Joe Day's reach, putting the Pilgrims 1-0 up. Argyle's second came just minutes later, when a long goal-kick was flicked on by Ryan Taylor to an advancing Jake Jervis, who simply shrugged off his man with pace and slotted home in front of the Devonport End. Jervis went from scorer to creator when he slipped in Player of the Season Graham Carey, who, in true Graham Carey fashion, fired home after a few fancy tricks and dummies. Ryan Taylor added to Newport's misery when his cool back-heel trickled past Day. With the Pilgrims scoring four goals in a truly unforgettable 20-minute flurry, the Green Army could relax, knowing full well that the day was well and truly theirs. Kennedy added to the score again, a curling effort on the edge of the box, and Jervis grabbed his second of the day, too, after strength and pace combined to allow Ryan Taylor to set it up on a plate. Newport did get a consolation goal, coming in injurytime, but this did not dampen any spirits. The referee blew for full-time, Argyle had officially cemented their place in the third tier with their biggest win over Newport, and the Green Army could get their party started.
