STEVEN SCHUMACHER Managersnotes
We welcome manager Ben Garner and his staff, as well as the players, officials and fans of Charlton.
Tonight is our first knockout game in the Papa Johns Trophy since the competition format changed, so it is a slightly new experience, but one that we welcome. It is a game we want to win, and a competition we want to do well in.
This time, if you don’t play well then you are out of the competition and that’s it until next year. We don’t want that. We want to perform as best we can, try to get through to the next round, where hopefully we will have more fit players by then.
Saturday’s game was frustrating, obviously, to concede a goal so late in the day against Burton Albion, but it is another game unbeaten, another point on the road, at a place where it is always difficult to go.
We showed great quality in the second half, and probably did enough to win the game, but it wasn’t to be. A big positive from the afternoon was to see Mickel Miller in an Argyle shirt for the first time in
a competitive fixture. He looked sharp, too.
Tonight will be another big step in his recovery from injury. There is still more than half the season to go, and he can play a big part for us.
This game is also an opportunity for some of our young players to get experience of first-team football. We have a lot of players out with injury, and a few more nursing knocks who we need to manage over the next week or so.
We didn’t want to go out of the FA Cup – far from it – but it has served up a free weekend where we can reset, go away and recharge. Everybody can get some downtime which mentally and physically we need.
We’ve had three away games on the spin, the travelling has been hard. We’ll play Tuesday night, give it our best, then the players will have a few days to go home, see families and then get back to work ready for Port Vale.
Enjoy the game.
All the best, Steven.
Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Home Park for tonight’s Papa Johns Trophy game against Charlton Athletic.TROPHY TALES
The Papa Johns Trophy has now reached the last 32 stage and there are 13 games played tonight, two tomorrow and one next week on 30 November.
Our opponents from the weekend, Burton Albion, host Tranmere Rovers from Sky Bet League Two. The Brewers will obviously be feeling good after their lastminute leveller against the Pilgrims, while Tranmere suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Wimbledon.
Wolverhampton Wanderers U21’s take on Manchester United U21’s and there is an all-League One clash between Lincoln and Morecambe. The two sides actually met in the league on Saturday, when goals from Joe Walsh and Ben House gave the Imps a 2-1 victory.
Accrington earned their first win in eight at Cambridge on the weekend, and will take that boost to Grimsby Town, while Salford City host a Bradford side that went down 3-1 at home to Northampton three days ago. Bolton Wanderers have a tricky game at home to League Two promotion hopefuls Barrow.
Despite struggling down the bottom of Sky Bet League One, Forest Green Rovers secured an excellent draw at Oxford United on side, as former Pilgrim Jamille Matt emerged from the
bench to give his side a point. Forest Green host Cheltenham tonight and the Robins beat Wycombe 1-0.
MK Dons continue to stutter through their campaign, going down 3-1 at a soggy Barnsley on Saturday, and they welcome a Newport side feeling good after a 2-0 win over Gillingham. Stevenage are second in League Two and will fancy their chances against Arsenal U21’s.
Peterborough United will be hoping to banish the memory of a feisty 1-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers when they take on Chelsea U21 at London Road, and there is an intriguing derby at Plough Lane, where Wimbledon host Sutton.
The final Trophy game tonight should be a cracker, as two League One heavyweights meet at Portman Road, Ipswich Town v Portsmouth.
There are two games tomorrow evening. Port Vale, who beat our visitors from Charlton 1-0 on Saturday, are at home to Barnsley, and Bristol
Rovers make the trip to League Two strugglers Colchester. The final game next week will see Everton U21’s travel to Mansfield Town.

The Addicks
Charlton Athletic reached this stage in the Papa Johns Trophy after progressing through a group that included Gillingham, Colchester United and Brighton U21’s.
The Addicks opened their Trophy campaign against the Gills on a night when the next generation demonstrated their tremendous potential.
An own goal provided Charlton with the breakthrough, as a powerful cross bounced off Gillingham defender Lewis Williams and into the home net.
After the break, the Addicks took complete control and it was a lovely goal from youngster Aaron Henry, curling a fine finish into the corner. Miles Leaburn sealed the 3-0 victory with a drilled low finish.
Charlton travelled to Colchester for their second Trophy game in October and a win would have virtually sealed their place in the last 32. A sublime
team move, finished off by Albie Morgan, gave the Addicks a deserved lead on 17 minutes.
They remained in control of the game for long periods and had a glorious chance to seal the win, but Jack Payne’s penalty was brilliantly saved by home goalkeeper Sam Hornby.
Colchester, to their credit, stayed in the game and grabbed an equaliser three minutes from time, Tom Eastman notching from close range. The hosts then pinched an unlikely victory with a goal from John Akinde.
It all came down to the final group game at home to Brighton and, once again, late drama defined the occasion.
A thumping header from Sam Lavelle gave Charlton the lead on the stroke of half-time but Brighton found an equaliser. The game was seconds away from penalties when Payne swooped for a last-gasp winner.
PILGRIMS ADDICKS &
Tonight’s visit from Charlton Athletic will represent competitive fixture number 78 between our clubs, a history that goes back to March 1922, when goals from Patsy Corcoran (2) and Frank Richardson gave Argyle a 3-0 win in Division Three South.
Home advantage has generally been a significant factor in this fixture, with just 16 away victories coming from those previous 77 meetings, a trend underlined by a tough defeat for the Pilgrims at the Valley early in the current Sky Bet League One season.
The Addicks last visited Home Park in December of last season and it was
a tight affair, edged by Argyle with a solitary goal from Kieran Agard.
Surprisingly, in all those 77 games, only two have been Cup fixtures, and both of them were in the FA Cup. Our first knockout meeting arrived in January 1981, when a goal from Argyle striker David Kemp wasn’t enough on the day, as Charlton progressed with a 2-1 win.
We also clashed in the FA Cup two years ago, this time at the Valley, and a goal from Luke Jephcott gave the Greens a 1-0 success.
Argyle have enjoyed two 6-1 victories at home to Charlton, one in 1932 and the other 30 years later.
Over 20,000 fans watched Sammy Black smash in a hat-trick, plus goals from Tommy Grozier, Ray Bowden and Jack Vidler, when the Pilgrims overpowered the Addicks 90 years ago. Wilf Carter was the hat-trick hero in 1962. Alex Jackson (2) and Jimmy McAnearney also scored.
For those of us who love goals, there is a pleasing history of entertaining games between the two clubs. The best example is a four-match period in the early 1960s, when the net bulged an incredible 37 times in the four games.
Argyle twice won 6-4, while Charlton also had a 6-4 success, plus a 5-2.
"SURPRISINGLY, IN ALL THOSE 77 GAMES, ONLY TWO HAVE BEEN CUP FIXTURES, AND BOTH OF THEM WERE IN THE FA CUP"
Schuey’s Contract Extension
have to pinch myself a little bit. I’m still not sure the fact that I am the manager of Plymouth Argyle has sunk in.
“It’s been a good start. We’re 12 months into the job, almost, so to extend my contract and stay here for a little bit longer, I couldn’t be any happier.
“It’s gone better than expected. Last season, we had a brilliant start, and everybody was waiting for us to drop off. We didn’t do that until the last day, when we just missed out of the play-offs. It was an incredible achievement to get 80 points.
It has been observed many times that Steven Schumacher is a man with a plan. After signing a contract extension until 2027, the gaffer spoke exclusively to Argyle TV.
“For me, signing this extension says I believe in the plan,” he said. “I’m fully committed to it, and I have been since the day we came down here. I work hard every single day to try to achieve that.
“This contract is another step in the plan. The commitment that club has shown me, and that I have shown to them,
shows that I believe in the plan.
“I’m delighted. It means everything. The support that I have received from the board, Andrew [Parkinson] and Simon [Hallett] over the last 12 months that I have been manager has been incredible.
“Everybody can see the improvements the club are making, year on year. We’re getting bigger, we’re getting a bit more organised, the structure behind the scenes is getting better, as is the revenue coming in.
People can see that from the outside; it’s not just us, in the building, who are seeing that. People up and down the country can see that what we are doing is something special.
“As long as we stick to the plan, we are all on the same page, and we all keep trying to improve in every department – not just the football department – then the club can get to where it wants to get to, which is in the Championship.
“Every time I walk out the tunnel I think ‘wow’. I still
“This summer, everybody was saying ‘they won’t be able to do that again. There’s no way Plymouth Argyle can sustain their push with what they’ve got’. We’re proving everybody wrong.
“I’m happy to keep proving people wrong. I’m happy to keep pushing this team as far as we can push them, keep dragging every single ounce of quality out of the players. That’s what it is going to take to stay at the top end of this division, where we want to be.”

ACADEMY ACADEMY ARGYLE FOREST GREEN ROVERS 0 ARGYLE 2
Argyle completed a Youth Alliance League double over Forest Green Rovers after beating them by the same score as when the sides met earlier in the season.
On that day in September, at Langsford Park, Caleb Roberts gave Argyle the lead, and once again, he got on the scoresheet, this time scoring Argyle's second after Oscar Halls had fired them ahead.
After an even start to the game, Argyle got stronger as the half wore on. Cole Gibbings released Jack Endacott down the flank, and his cross found Joe Hatch, who fired just over the crossbar.
The breakthrough came on 43 minutes, as skipper Halls hit an impressive volley from the edge of the area, that flew into the top corner of the home goal.
Although Argyle worked hard in the second half to maintain the upper hand, chances were rare, although Roberts did go close with his 69th minute effort.
Roberts had better luck, five minutes from time, as his superb 25-yarder flew into the corner of the Rovers net to complete a welldeserved victory for Darren Way's charges.
Argyle: Zak Baker, Jack Matthews, Cole Gibbings, Cole Fisher, Oscar Halls (c), Caleb Roberts, Freddie Issaka, Kieran Edworthy, Henry Donovan (Lewis Colwell 65), Joe Hatch (Jensen Ireland 82), Jack Endacott. Substitute not used: James Morley (gk).
